“I’m fine with where I am now.” 

It’s difficult to say if the first or the second time he see’s you when you’re not with him anymore is easier than the last. Even if it’s enough to know that he doesn’t like it, he can deal with it. He won’t break. It’s not bad enough for him to change anything. It’s not painful enough for him to even consider going back on his decisions.

That’s what hurt you the most and he knows it.

He can live without you in his life. He can go without you in every facet of his day to day. The blinding truth of your presence making no difference to him was what put the final nail in the coffin of your relationship. It’s the moment he saw all the hope and light fade from your eyes when you looked at him. As you saw him for what he really, truly is. Who he is.

And seeing you now with someone besides himself, someone else bringing that light back into your eyes, doesn’t phase him like it should. His mission and purpose were never so trivial to be attached to one person. To be hinged on the life of another. No, no. His mission for revenge, for change and to better the world and society as it is- will never, ever include you. It can’t.

You would only get in the way. The tears, the begging and pleading not to go out and do what he must for things to actually be done- you’re a distraction. A path he could have taken and decided not to.

But when you gaze meets with his he can see you haven’t fully moved on just yet. Even across the park he can make out each and every shift of your lips as you tug away from the other person with an excuse to go towards him.

He watches as you make your way toward the shadowy tree line he’s lurking in until you’re finally a foot away from him.

“Dabi?” you breathe, your voice hitching in your throat. He catches the lilt and rise of your pitch, the anxious memories overtaking your features. “How are you?”

“Fine.” He should walk away. This will only hurt you more if he stays longer then he should.

“I didn’t think I’d ever see you again...” you trail off, reaching out toward him before deciding against it and pulling your hand away from him. “It’s been months...A..Are you happy?”

“I’m fine with where I am now.” he breathes and takes a step back. “I gotta go.”

“o-Oh..” you swallow and he notices the tears flash in your eyes. Glistening orb’s staring back into his soul. “Alright. Take care of yourself, Dabi..”

He doesn’t bother answering. there’s no reason to give you false hope.

He’s fine with how things are. You should learn to move on.

Learn to accept he can live just fine without you.
