pairing: vernon x fem!reader
genre: just pure gross fluff
warning: shots fired at jeonghan's dyson blowdryer
wc: 935
a/n: inspired by a friend who said vernon did not know how to style his hair at all and low-key agree. i let my intrusive thoughts win - i told you i would write this 👁️👁️
. . . .
"uh . . . is this okay?"
there's a waver in his voice that's not usually there.
vernon spoke with assurance and his words were well-founded.
you spun around in your vanity chair to find vernon side-eyeing is reflection in the full-length mirror, his fingers slick with gel combing through front of his dark brown (with a tinge of green per his observation) locks.
he smiles in your direction awkwardly - his eyes clearly full of worry, but his lips still pulled taut in attempt to look content with his work.
your own expression mirrored his - lips pressed into a tight line, not because you were embarrassed, but rather, you were doing your damn best not to burst out laughing at him.
it was mean and you knew you shouldn't, but, oh, with the way half his fringes stuck to his forehead and the other half was clumped together and curved forward skimming the tops of brows (but also not curving enough to cover them), did it make it hard to hold back.
"if you're gonna laugh, just laugh," he frowned.
you set your blush brush on the table to give yourself a moment to collect yourself. you play it chill and shrugged, "i wasn't going to."
"your voice is doing that thing again," he remarked. he points his fingers up to indicate the way it changes pitches when you're lying. "i'd rather you tell me and come fix it, rather than lying and telling me i look good - you're really going to let me out in public looking like this?"
it's only then you let out your chortle. it grew into a hearty chuckle, head being tossed back in the process. vernon shook his head, finding himself grinning as well. your laugh isn't what they say in the books - of music and windchimes swaying in the wind. it was breathy and loud, yet somehow silent because when you laughed too hard, all sound escaped you. nonetheless, vernon loved it - it was uniquely you and he loved how in a crowd full of people or if you were hidden from view, he could find you if someone made you happy enough to let it rip.
you're already shuffling over in your navy blue slippers, patting a spot on the edge of your bed, gesturing for vernon to sit down for you. he followed your direction, when the chuckling finally died down and the muscles in your face relaxed, a comfortable silence ensued as you naturally wedged yourself in between his thighs and get to work on his hair.
vernon closed his eyes as your fingers combed through, humming every now and then while you try to figure out the best way to part his hair and which pieces should stick out or how you should separate the clump.
once upon a time, this closeness might have made him nervous, but vernon's grown familiar with it and it has somehow come some sort of reassurance and security to him. your body heat wrapped around him like the couch blanket he used when he napped. your fingers carding through his hair wasn't bothersome because not only did you fix his hair more than once, but you also messed it up in the same fashion when teasing him or being frustrated over the late nights.
"stay still," you instructed as you teased a few strands, "i'm almost done."
you click your tongue against your teeth a few times as your fumbled to keep the last piece in place. a satisfied smile spread across your face when it finally stuck. you admired your work, hands naturally coming down to settle on his shoulders.
unconsciously, vernon raised his hands to wrap around your waist - it was too tempting to have you this close and not. for once, he'd let his intrusive thoughts win.
but it seemed like you had other priorities.
"i'm going to get the hairspray," you told him, "so it stays - i like it like this."
just as you're about to step back, vernon tugged you roughly into his chest - as if you were going to run and never come back.
of course, he knew that wasn't the case, but again, his intrusive thoughts were winning tonight.
"vernon," you said softly, though surprised. your hands rest against his chest, trying to push yourself off.
okay - maybe he lied a little bit. there were times where your close proximity still made him nervous.
like now, when the unexpected happens.
"hi," he gulped.
you pursed your lips and narrowed your eyes at him curiously. he did his best to give his puppy eye, but he recalled how you once told him he was more of a cat than he was a dog - whatever that means.
"what are you doing?" you asked.
"is it working?"
"again, what are you doing?" you chuckled.
he looked to the side momentarily before turning back to you. he gave you small squeeze, pressing you closer into his chest.
"thank you," was all he can muster to say.
you snorted and pressed a chaste kiss against his lips. this took him by surprise, wincing back as your lips parted.
"you're welcome," you peeled his hands off your back and started jogging towards the bathroom. you called back, "now, the hairspray or else you're hair is going to be ridiculous and we're going to be late trying to fix it!"
if this was love, vernon would be inclined to believe it's real and just maybe it's sustainable - forever, if he was being cheesy.
love was in the simple things: fixing your significant other's hair, pecks in the in between, and the teases before and after it.
jeonghan's new dyson blowdryer couldn't even compare.

I think at this point i'd be more surprised if we get to see a character grieve Tech than if it's revealed Tech is CX-2
Yes i am bitter about it, I know im biased because Tech is my favourite, and im not hating on any of the characters, and maybe my expectations were too much but i thought it wouldve been good to get at least one scene of someone grieving. Even if it was just someone silently looking at Techs goggles, but thats just me and who knows maybe we still might get something but i doubt it.
It just feels weird to me and yes people grieve in different ways but looking down or to the side with a slightly sad expression isn't it for me from a story perspective.
I know some people disagree ive seen the posts, but to me it just feels really weird. Maybe there is something i'm missing but idk.
I still love the show its just 4am and im bitter.

some people are very mad at the implication that the LN world is ~All A Dream~ but i dont think thats exactly it? like to me it seems very clear that the ln world is a real place, and all that happens in it is real. i think that what's happening is that when they go to sleep, their consciousness is transported into this paralel reality (the Nowhere) and they leave once they awaken, but as they spent more and more time there they slowly succumb to whatever powers or entities rule that world and they become trapped there. its like. kind of like the dark worlds in deltarune, or the other world in coraline, or the upside down in stranger things, or the fear reality/ies in the magnus archives you get the idea
those entities seem to both feed off of and be created by childrens fear, a paradoxical "it exists because children fear it and children fear it because it exists" thing. in an interview a dev said that "something happened before in [the kids] lives that made them a good fit for little nightmares" and i think that "something" is being traumatized: you have more nightmares that way.
something interesting about six specifically is that she's always described as being from somewhere else, not belonging 'here', etc, one description even says she "awoke in a world she cannot recognize" which. straight up confirms shes Not From This World, but like, if all of the kids came here because of nightmares whats different about her? why do they apparently 'belong' in the nowhere but she doesnt? maybe she has, like, too much willpower to succumb to the powers or something and thus doesnt belong with the other kids trapped here who have all given up, but then again shes also described to be "fading away from this world" at the start of ln2 which does seem to mean that shes succumbing to it? like, giving up and fading away? idk idk
bandai website description, issue 1 of the comic
also from the bandai namco website. six's "terrible fate" might be her succumbing to depression or whatever but have no idea why guiding mono to the signal tower would be important? maybe its not actually about the tower and its just about having a purpose and a friend to hold on to so she still has hope
ok heres my tinfoil hat theory: obv the podcast, the devs, promotional material and concept art all seem to be saying that ''kids go to a nightmare world when they go to sleep and sometimes get trapped there" is whats happening, but this post theorizes that maybe the nightmares noone in the podcast is having are prophetic and like. the nightmares explained video says that "the nightmares are crossing into the real world". what if what happened is that vulnerable kids who kept having nightmares were going to this future reality where the world got fucked up because of these entities, and maybe whenever they succumbed to them the entities were able to use their bodies to cross into our world, which eventually led to them being able to take over? resulting in the future fucked up reality kids were going to in their dreams? its not like little nightmares is unfamiliar with time paradoxes thats basically what happened to mono. idk!!!!
i keep bringing up other media but im not really comparing them im just using similsr exampled to explain what i mean bc its so weird i cant think of how else to do it. anyways what if the kids who fully give up and succumb to the fear become like the goners frok undertale. everyone just forgets they ever existed
