Netflix just came out with a Austen-esque period drama TV show called Bridgerton that is based on a novel series and I HIGHLY recommend it.
It’s a Shondaland production and it has a racially diverse cast and strong female leads. The dialog is hilarious and snappy and the characters are complex and compelling - also the plot twists are so satisfying and it has all the good tropes including fake relationship, mutual pining, a Mr Darcy-like love interest, and feminist commentary / exploration of gender norms AND it’s got this Gossip Girl thing going with a mysterious female writer who comments on high society scandals but it’s just so much better. and it has this in-universe explanation for the racial diversity in the show that is super intriguing. ALSO THE COSTUMES!! THE COSTUMES!!!!! <333 and everyone is super hot
I literally binge-watched this in one day (it came out yesterday) and i can’t recommend this enough please watch it! (I will say trigger warning for consent stuff - one part involving a creeper who gets punched out & another involving a major female character disregarding her love interest’s boundaries - also the sex scenes are frequent and explicit but it’s filmed in a really female-oriented way) anyway if you like romance, and you like jane austen and you are hungry for more diverse period dramas, this is it

A request for whenever you want: modern M6 and their favorite TV shows?
(Tumblr needs to stop deleting my stuff ugh!)
Okay let's try this again! I tried to use different genres and there are a few listed I haven't seen but have heard of that just make sense. I'm not sure especially after everything if anyone will be into things that are too intense or dark but their are a few
Modern M6's Favorite TV Shows
Asra💜
I can totally see Asra being into trashy reality romance shows. Mostly out of morbid curiosity or flat out hate watch, his favorite being 90 Day Fiancé. The one they actually do enjoy is Catfish and might get too invested/emotional with some couples.
Their all time favorite is probably heart felt like The Good Place or maybe This Is Us. They primarily enjoy rom-coms like Gilmore Girls, Jane the Virgin, New Girl, etc.
Likes to watch Rick and Morty or the Midnight Gospel to just chill and vibe with.
Nadia💖
She would love most thing's Shondaland; Scandal, even Bridgerton (she doesn't care if it's a guilty pleasure) yet isn't as into Gossip Girl. She also likes Castle and detective dramedies like it. Even House of Cards is just so intriguing to her.
She likes Private Practice and Grey's Anatomy much to Julian's dismay. I can see her liking royalty biopics too like the Crown. It might not be completely accurate but it's entertaining.
At the same time she's kinda picky. She'll try most things but sometimes she just can't get into a show for whatever reason.
Julian🖤
His favorites are things he doesn't have to think about after a long day but still enjoys a good anthology. He likes the Great British Bake Off for this reason and because they're all so nice to each other!
While he loves certain concepts and characters he just can't sit through most medical dramas (Scrubs however, he loves because it's a goofy fun time). He's open to most things and actually can get into alot of different shows. I'm almost convinced he'd love Sherlock or Doctor Who, definitely loves The Mandalorian and Andor.
I can see him liking period shows like the Marvelous Ms. Maisel or Downton Abbey (Nadia recommended it). I also get the feeling he'd like Better Call, Saul!
Muriel💚
He'll watch whatever is on but isn't super partial to anything. When he watches something on his own or gets to pick there's a pattern in themes or aesthetics though.
Hilda, Anne with an E, and to an extent Outlander (sometimes might skip through scenes) are his favorites. He prefers light hearted, cozy shows but isn't opposed to some good plot heavy shows. Will cry when his favorites end or get cancelled.
At the same time just PBS cooking, travel, and gardening shows specifically are his favorite to put on in the background.
Portia🧡
She gets really into the darker, spooky scary stuff like Black Mirror and American Horror Story alongside the Walking Dead. She has her own theories for everything! (Nadia also got her into Good Girls.)
I can see her getting really into Cartoon Network shows like Infinity Train, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Adventure Time, Over the Garden Wall, ect. She'd also love Summer Camp Island.
Besides that she's just really into Fantasy and Adventure. She's pretty open to trying out any show especially if it has those elements.
Lucio❤️
He has seen all of Jersey Shore and every single spinoff. No one is shocked, those are his comfort shows. He likes other reality TV like Big Brother too. I could see him liking Shameless for the same absurd antics and comedy.
As much as he loves adult comedies like South Park, and Big Mouth he does like other animated shows. Ren and Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life, Cat-Dog, and obviously Fairly Odd-Parents to name a few. Basically, any cartoon from the 90s.
Still sometimes he gets invested in other shows but usually it's because someone else got him into it like How I Met Your Mother. In which case it'll be a struggle to get him to not binge it on his own.
Shows they all enjoy or even get together to watch:
Steven Universe, What We Do In The Shadows, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Friends, The Office, Parks and Rec, The Witcher, Game of Thrones, Stranger Things (maybe), Bojack Horseman (They refuse to let anyone/each other watch it alone though), Gravity Falls, Avatar the Last Airbender, Legend of Kora, The Good Place, Archer, Bob's Burgers, Bluey (I said what said), The Owl House, Letterkenny, Cheers, etc.
They are acutely aware of which characters they match up with each show and find it hilarious. Well everyone but Lucio for obvious reasons. (If anyone wants those matches, just let me know! lol)

idk how to word this without making it super long, but i hope the reboot stays kind of trashy and soap opera-y like the original. one of the best things about the original gg imo is that it portrayed the wildly unattainable lifestyle of rich New York elites without making me think it could ever be realistic, you know? so i hope the reboot doesn’t try and tackle every social issue on the planet and ground it that hard in reality, because not only does it feel misplaced, it would also maybe cause people to view the original in that light and Gossip Girl is the last show that should be looked at as real life given all their... choice storylines.
i’ve had my general answer for this typed out in my drafts for a little while and it seems like a good day to post it since twitter is basically imploding over the news that the reboot won’t feature the slut shaming of its girl characters as the original did lol. i do have a lot of thoughts on this because it’s a complicated topic that i find so interesting, so this is about to be long, sorry dsbhjnkds.
i understand the feeling that a lot of younger tv these days is more interested in dealing with social problems than it is in producing high quality content (i’ve always felt the issue is much less that these shows are attempting social commentary and more that these attempts are often SO half-baked and often written by like 40 year olds who don’t really know how teens actually talk about these issues and most likely don’t fully understand these issues themselves or have anything worthwhile to say about them), and i understand the concern that it’s very much beside the point of gg, a show that once based a now-iconic ad campaign on the negative criticism it received on the basis of being inappropriate, to shy away from controversial subject matter.
but tbh i don’t think these two things (social commentary and entertainment) are necessarily mutually exclusive! i’m pretty positive it’ll still be relatively soapy, but i think they can do some dramatics while also dealing with the social issues that naturally come up better than they did in the original––sexual assault, slut shaming and lack of any racial awareness being the most glaring ones.
i’m sort of expecting something more like season 1 of the original. it wasn’t as intensely soapy as the later seasons were, but it was still dramatic and entertaining. and they did still deal with some pretty heavy issues, like eating disorders, suicide attempts, substance abuse, etc. i don’t think learning how to deal with these topics more responsibly will take away from the wildness at all. i actually think that the writers learning how to do this will make for much better, unique writing/storylines, i.e. less reliance on “that slut slept with my boyfriend” for drama (which was done to death in the 2000s anyway; we already have blairena so i don’t see why we’d need another version), more reliance on creative, original ways to stir up tension. the original show, frankly, could have been better in the later seasons if it focused less on the shock factor and quickly moving on to the next bit of drama, and more on staying in character and properly dealing with the issues its characters faced.
whenever anybody talks about the social unawareness of the original gg, fans jump right to “but it’s reflective of the time it was written in.” and it’s true: gg reflected and amplified its particular culture. this is a big reason why it was so popular at the time, and also a big reason why certain parts of it have aged pretty poorly. i’d say the new gg will not be any different in this respect. the original gg was written in a time when it was pretty normal to call a girl a slut; the new gg has been written in a time when most young people have decided, no it’s not okay to call girls sluts. the show will simply reflect that culture shift, as long as it’s done well. there are better, smarter ways to create drama in a show and i’m happy that the writers recognized that.

Conversation
The Avengers and Their Favorite Reality TV show(s):
Steve: Steve is trying to adjust to life in the 21st century, and in order to do that it would be easiest for him to learn from the TV. He is SHOCKED at the content seen on shows the other avengers watch. He finds himself watching a lot of challenge based tv shows. (He loves cupcake wars) Chopped is one of his favorites and so is Cake Boss. He loves watching celebrity interviews as well, it helps him get acquainted with todays culture.
Tony: Tony walked in on Pepper and Natasha watching Real House Wives and needless to say, he was so entertained. This then moved onto him watching all of the Real House Wives spin offs, Mob Wives, etc. Their rich lifestyle is relatable to him and he cant help but yell at the TV (with a drink in hand) in encouragement when the wives argue. Tony also LOVES pawn stars.
Natasha: If you watch TLC on sundays, you know the line up, its 90 day fiancé, sMothered, Love after lockup, etc. Natasha cant get enough of those shows. She even has a secret reddit account to keep up with the drama and to comment on the dumb antics of the shows subjects.
Clint: While being Nats closest friend, Clint gets in on the drama. However his favorite show to watch is Love After Lockup. His wife once walked by and said "Ugh this show is so trashy how could you wa-" "ITS WHAT?"
Thor: Thors favorite reality shows are Dance Moms, 90 day Fiance and Keeping up with the Kardashians. When Thor started visiting Earth more he inquired as to what the culture was and began watching TV. He then fell into a rabbit hole of trashy reality shows that he finds HILARIOUS because "Humans are so tiny!!"
Loki: Loki, like Thor, thinks humans are tiny and a bit pea brained. While bored on Earth he decides to turn on the TV. "What in bloody hell is Bad Girls Club?" He loved it. the cat fights, the bitchiness, the backstabbing, EVERYTHING. It was so dumb but entertaining to him. He also will watch ancient aliens and argues their points with his many years of life experience.
Sam: Sams guilty pleasure is Jersey Shore, he even goes as far as wanting to see Pauly D live. It reminds him of his party days and he eventually gets Bucky to watch it with him.
Bucky: "Sam for the 5th time I don't want to watch Jersey Shore." *Is completely enthralled in Jwoww fighting Angelina 15 minutes later* Since Bucky is from the 40s he's a bit confused at the content at first but eventually finds it entertaining. Bucky also loves watching how they make swords on Forged in Fire and he watches pawn stars on Saturday mornings with Tony. (He might even recognize a few items from the 40s)
Peter: Peter and MJ watch the bachelor and bachelorette and have bets on whos goes home. He also loves watching Ancient Aliens and other science TV shows. He also watches kitchen nightmares on youtube, Peter has seen a lot as Spiderman but the one thing that will always scare him is an angry Gordon Ramsey.
Wanda: Wanda loves wholesome reality shows like Say Yes to the Dress, Four Weddings etc. She also enjoys the entire Investigation Discovery channel and will try to figure out who the killer is before they do. She also has a soft spot for home improvement shows that she watches with vision.
Vision: Vision doesn't watch much TV but when he does its with Wanda. He enjoys watching how its made, and all the home improvement shows you can think of. He often will fantasize about doing the same improvements in his future house with wanda.
Pietro: Pietro loves spooky TV. Ghost Adventures, Ghost Hunters, The Dead Files. Be prepared to hear what Tony calls "Girly" screams coming from Pietros room on Friday nights when he binge watches these shows.
Bruce: Bruce LOVES science shows, its common knowledge. He watches The Unexplained, Ancient Aliens and How the Universe Works. He often finds himself arguing the TV in his head. When Bruce isn't in his science mood he enjoys Cake Boss, Married at First Sight and some of the shows Natasha watches.
Nick: Nicks guilty pleasure is early 2000s reality shows, they remind him of the "Good old days." He loves watching re-runs of Flavor of Love, I Love New York, Charm School, Next, etc. He also STANS Tiffany "New York" Pollard.
Coulson: We all know Coulson watches Dr. Phil when he gets home. We also know he loves the more mundane TV shows like extreme couponing, my strange addiction, etc. He even gossips with Natasha about 90 day fiancé from time to time. He also is a big fan of Americas Next Top Model.

can you do "K: What’s their Youtube suggestions look like? " and "Y: What movie could they watch over and over again? " for the Adult Trio? Please
I’m not really much of a movie person, so I just wrote what I think they would enjoy. Hopefully that’s fine with you, and thanks for waiting!
“K: What’s their Youtube suggestions look like? "
Hisoka
Hisoka’s suggestions would be a strange mix between a nineteen-year-old sorority girl and your average tween boy. Drama channels, Tea spill channels, makeup channels, splattered with decent helpings of prank videos or extreme stunts. What he watches depends greatly on his mood, sometimes he winds down to the latest beauty guru gossip with a wine glass in hand, maybe he’s searching for recommendations to update his make up collection, or he’s up at three am spiraling into a cycle of vicious prank videos. Occasionally, he watches rant channels just to feed off the negative energy as the person in the screen screams their heart out, he finds it oddly relaxing.
Chrollo
You can bet that Chrollo’s search history is filled with the strangest and most damning of things. With things ranging from the mass production of CDs to the usage of chalk to a brief historical guide to the middle ages, if it is a topic he has probably seen an in-depth video explaining it. He’s the type to go into the rabbit hole and emerge with the most random of facts, which he will then cross check with other references to ensure validity before reporting his findings to the Troupe members. I can also see him watching restoration videos of old art pieces, since he appreciates the educational value behind them, and uses it as a form of scouting and as a form of relaxation. As a guilty pleasure, he also watches unboxing videos although he isn’t entirely sure why he likes them either.
Illumi
If anything, Illumi is more of a deep web user since it provides more valuable information to him. When he does have the time to relax and watch videos, he tends to stick with the news, although he can really get into watching those disturbing artsy videos with no real intention besides making you feel creeped out. The more unnerving it is, the better. He is so removed from his emotions that anything that can make him feel anything just wins in his book. I see him being more of a podcast person, where he doesn’t need to look at the screen but can just listen to as he does his own thing in the background. It is not that he is particularly interested in the topic, but just likes the noise in the background.
"Y: What movie could they watch over and over again? "
Hisoka
While he isn’t particularly interested in movies, he does like cinemas for all the wrong reasons, it’s dark, decently crowded and you have to sit next to him, so there is always someone he can pester if there is no one else in immediate vicinity. He’s the type of guy who likes talking throughout movies and throw popcorn at the people sitting in front. If you both go for a highly anticipated film, he will read up on spoilers and ruin the movie for everyone as he reveals the plot as the movie goes along. If you both got placed near the very end, he will try to do indecent things with you and see how much you can both get away with before someone realizes you’re doing the nasty at the back.
As for his actual taste, he does like comedy, especially if it’s dark, but he can work with dry stuff too. A creative adventure movie and decent humor is a premise he would enjoy. He also likes trashy, over-the-top shows, and loves a big, all out family feud complete with food fights, partly because he never had a family and lives vicariously through those films. On a side note, he isn’t too impress with action shows with large explosions since he has lived through them and believes the directors are just trying too hard to make everything seem cool, but he will watch them if you want. In all honesty, he can watch just about anything as long as it keeps him entertain long enough.
Chrollo
Chrollo enjoys his books more than his movies, simply because it lets him absorb the information at his own pace and there isn’t some external force directing him through the scene. I see him being more of a documentary kind of guy, since it’s informative and the slower pace is something more up is alley. While he only started watching nature documentaries when he was younger for the soothing voices to lull him to sleep, he has since uncovered a whole different realm of educational videos. He has a strange fascination with murder mysteries or the supernatural and I can imagine him binge watching on a whole series for a day or two and repeating this cycle every couple of months.
If he does watches movies, he’s the type who likes to rewind and re-watch scenes multiple times, even if that scene happened 20 minutes ago. He also re-watches it a couple times before pausing to think, process it and ask for your opinion on it. I see him enjoying mystery films with hidden meanings and religious symbolisms. He likes gritty, dark shows with a nice dosing of angst and plenty of double-meanings, and if the movies are psychological dramas, even better. I imagine he’ll enjoy a premise similar to Dan Brown’s Angels and Demons. While it is not something he will necessary watch, something with a plot like that will keep him interested.
Illumi
Illumi’s interest walk a fine line. On one hand, he loves dark gothic art with beautiful cinematography and nice wide-angle shots overlooking a whole city bathed in moonlight. On the other, he is attracted to anything involving the aesthetically disturbing, and is also a big fan of body horror where he gets to see the changes done in real time. Seeing how he is willing to morph himself into grotesque shapes, I can see him enjoying movies that are willing to contort the human body into impossible forms. I would say the ideal movie for him is something bleak yet hauntingly beautiful, and progressively gets more and more disturbing as time goes on. If there is an additional martyr or sacrificial love sort of thing going on, he would appreciate it even more as long as it is not done too over the top.
When he was much younger and closer to all his siblings, he would occasionally bend to Killua’s whims and watch old animated action/adventure movies with him. He enjoyed the simplicity of the shows, but he enjoyed it more because it would make his brother so happy. Now those tapes are burned and he can barely remember any of the scenes but the songs stuck with him, which he catches himself humming softly on some nights.

Why do we love “trashy” reality TV shows, black African American women and the white working class in British reality TV
Because they’re fucking amazing, that’s why. The storyline, the characters, the scenes, the fights, the settings, the love, the romance, the drama, it’s quality television and I don’t want to hear another patronising word about it. An occasional Aryan Brotherhood or Louis Theroux documentary salvages my IQ, surely? I watch Planet Earth, surely that’s good enough? Telling me my favourite past time is a waste of my time is irritating to say the least. Particularly from people who watch men kick a ball about on a regular basis. However, my argument is slightly nuanced than that. My love of reality television doesn’t blind me to the fact that there is still space to question why it’s such a successful phenomenon. Different sectors of reality television: celebrity, dance, dating and relationship, modelling-themed ‎, property ‎, tattooing and wedding reality television shows, fall in different places on the “trashy” scale. What makes them trashy, though? What’s so wrong about wanting to see a girl getting dragged by her synthetic weave across the laminate floor of the Bad Girls Club mansion whilst a security guard makes a half-hearted attempt to salvage her?
Race and class plays into it. Love and Hip Hop — all cities- , Bad Girls Club — all cities — are full of black people and specifically, black women. If society neatly categorised shows into trashy, trashier and trashiest- these shows would fit comfortably into the ‘trashier’ category. Representations, particularly of African American, black women in reality television are negative and they serve to further angry, sassy, aggressive black woman stereotypes. Are black women portrayed this way because this is what the viewers want to see or are black women perceived like this because they areportrayed like this in reality television? The intersection of racism and sexism at misogynoir alongside neoliberalism provide the answers. Studies suggest that “African American women are uniquely subjected to the logic of neoliberalism which puts them in a no-win situation and explains their…failure in society at large. These programs employ contemporary “controlling images” of Black women: The Jezebel — “hypersexual woman with an insatiable horniness”-; The Matriarch — strong-willed, asexual, unattractive and overprotective of their children alienating men and the self-explanatory Strong Black Woman and Independent Black Woman. These are all dangerous for different reasons. The Jezebel asserts that black women with a large sexual appetite are unworthy of love, The Matriarch “stigmatizes black women and their mothering abilities by reducing them to dissatisfied, sexless women living vicariously through their children” , the Strong Black Women tells black women to swallow their emotions and sacrifice their wellbeing for others’ happiness and the Independent Black Woman is too narcissistic and is at fault for emasculating all the men in her life and thus ending up sad and lonely –oh God forbid. In contrast, I can admit that whilst they further these stereotypes, they all have an underlying message of strength and assertion which is a positive image to portray. Black women are perfectly within their rights to be strong, sassy, matriarchal, sexually active and independent but these archetypes must not be forced upon them before they are given the opportunity to reveal their true selves.
In shows where the majority of the cast represents stereotypes of the British working class, there are still non-racial stereotypes that are portrayed. Love Island (sometimes), Geordie Shore (always) and The Valleys (always) depict people whose accents, cities, behaviours or attitudes are associated with lower classes. Behaviours that are normal to the cities where they live are either patronisingly hilarious or disgustingly coarse to the audience. Shows which have a broader set of people, gain a little more respect in everyday conversation: Big Brother, Great British Bake Off and Gogglebox. Gogglebox has a family which represents almost every British family there is. Great British Bake Off does the same. The reason for its unprecedented success is its ability to transform something so every day to something so entertaining through relatable characters. Made in Chelsea evades both my previous theories for this precise reason, the storyline and the characters aren’t relatable. Made in Chelsea is a gentle mockery of the British high class. The borderline incestual love life and eternal gossip is entirely unrelatable to the majority of its audience, but that appears to be the appeal. There problems are so, so funny and I will never, ever have to go through them- it’s so distant that I can laugh without even feeling slightly bad about it.
Now, I’ll make a half-hearted attempt to defend myself and my Love and Hip Hop watching friends. Reality television is a microcosm of society. There are small niches and mainstream versions which each represent different personalities, experiences, cultures, ages and lifestyles. I started Bad Girls Club with one eye half open, wincing but further, I realised that these girls represents smaller parts of my personalities that I never truly have the opportunity to explore, so I live vicariously through these characters and they get paid very, very sweetly for it.
