#it is bilbo and elrond friendship
Text
I feel like Bilbo would be fully willing to criticize the choices of first age elves to their faces entirely based on how well details of their stories could be put to verse in westron, a language that did not exist at the time.
“Your cloak was trimmed in purple!? No that won’t do at all! Do you even understand how hard it is to rhyme purple? It’s quite inconsiderate to preform song-worthy deeds in purple you know! Humph, I guess we must make do with metaphor, but I shall have to completely reconstruct the meter for this whole stanza so that it scans! Quite inconvenient. What do you mean?! Of course I have to describe the colors you wore, how else shall the listener picture the scene! Now, let’s go for a walk in the garden, and you can point out which blooms are closest in hue to your cloak-trim. What did you eat before the battle by the way?”
“WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DON’T REMEMBER!?!”
Bilbo’s unrepentant willingness to scold fearsome warlords over the poetic potential of their outfits, and unforgivable inability to provide culinary details utterly delights Elrond, who is usually the only person in the room that realizes Bilbo is 100% messing with them.
Elrond gets as close to moping as he ever does when Celebrian insists that he can’t bring Bilbo to his first meeting with his parents in 6000 years, because “Love, the whole point of the exercise is YOU talking to them, not laughing at how confused Bilbo makes them! Bring him next time.”

Just finished Rings of Power and there’s a lot I can say. Liked some of it. Disliked some of it. It got me back into Middle-Earth (like I ever really left, some part of me is always there, but like the Star Wars sequel trilogy (which I despise with no remorse) it kind of revived general interest and gave me something new to see in a world I love so much) so I am inclined to give it a chance but overall a mixed bag. I love the books, I love the movies, there was some stuff that should definitely have been changed (or left out) in the series but other than that I liked it. (And if you disagree, good for you)
But what got me in the finale was the misunderstanding. Those cult... lady... things- whatever they are. Them mistaking the Istar for Sauron. That is fucking gold. If he ever finds out what they did he is going to be so offended. The very idea that he, Sauron, would look like a bedraggled, bearded hermit. The gall. The insult. He is Sauron! The bitch who gave himself so many pretty names because everyone else called him Mr Stinky. The right-hand Maia to Morgoth himself. He may not have shown himself in the guise of Annatar in the show (something I mourn because I would dearly like to see a live-action slutty twink Sauron helping poor flustered Celebrimbor make the rings before using him as a banner) but Halbrand is an attractive human form. If there’s one thing Sauron values, it is his own vanity.
And they thought he was the hermit in rags.
He’s going to be fucking furious.

Cinnamon
Fotfictober Prompts: 11 - Cinnamon
Summary: Bilbo and Lindir make some Cinnamon rolls
Pairing(s): Non
Characters: Are sweet stress bakers Lindir and Bilbo, Elrond
Warnings: Non
Tumblr media
It was late, the stars were out and the halls of the last homely house were empty, the torches which lit the way after dark had been blown out by the last servant which served the even generous Lord Elrond, Bilbo decided to stay in Imladris for a few days before continuing this journey back to the shire, Gandalf had also agreed to it.
Bilbo was careful to make sure he was silent while walking through the house careful not to wake anyone, he spotted few lights, still on one crept out from under the heavy oaken door of the library when he passed it, someone was working late and so was Elrond as he spotted Elrond's study was also admitting a faint glow of light from under the door.
Bilbo slowly opened the door to the kitchens, he poke his head around the door to see no one was in them, he slide a stool to where a lantern sat and careful lit it up, he continued until all the ones he could reach were lit up.
The door opened, making bilbo jump "I am sorry that I have disturbed you Mellon-nin" Lindir said
"What are you doing up" Bilbo questioned the elf
"I could ask you the same question" Lindir responded as he lit the rest of the lights
"I couldn't sleep" Bilbo replied
"Glorfindel will be the death of me, I swear he will start turning me grey even though elves can't turn grey" Lindir said to his hobbit friend
"He sounds over energetic" Bilbo said
"He is, he is like a big ball of radiant energy powered by the sun an elven golden retriever if you will" Lindir said as he helped Bilbo gather ingredients and equipment
"Can Elves have ADHD" Bilbo questioned Lindir raised his eyebrow in confusion
"It means Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder it is a condition that includes symptoms such as being restless and having trouble concentrating" Bilbo said
"That's Glorfindel in a nutshell the lord just can't sit still for long" Lindir said
"I do not know how it is with elves though, their symptoms maybe different" Bilbo said as Bilbo climbed onto the stool Lindir moved from him.
"I am intrigued what are you going to make with all these ingredient" Lindir questioned
"They are called Cinnamon rolls, Young hobbits love them" Bilbo said as he guided Lindir through the instructions.
"Bilbo" Lindir questioned the hobbit hmmed
"I found a picture while I was cleaning Elrond's study for him, of Him, The High King Gil-Galad, A female hobbit and a child which looked a lot like you" Lindir said
"Oh, if my memory can serve me correctly, my mother was a friend of your high king, they stopped visiting just before Gandalf started coming to the Shire" Bilbo said
"Oh I see" Lindir said as he did as Bilbo instructed
"the lord has changed a lot, as i didn't recognize him at first with the dwarves, he grew his hair out, and he isn't feral any more" Bilbo said
"Lord Elrond had short hair" Lindir said in surprise Bilbo nodded
"Something about wanting less little hobbits tugging on it and the fear of what happened to an elvish warrior being tugged off a cliff would happen to him" Bilbo said.
The two soon finished making the cinnamon rolls and put them into the oven to cook them, the two talked ideally until the rolls where done, Bilbo took a few and wrapped them up after putting the icing on which he got Lindir to make.
"See you tomorrow Lindir" Bilbo said the elf watched the hobbit go, Bilbo managed to let himself into Elrond's study to see the elf still awake working on paper work
"Bilbo, how can I help you" Elrond said as he watched the hobbit stood on the chair in front of him, Bilbo lay out the paper he had wrapped the rolls in and unwrapped them.
"This brings back memories" Elrond said as he took one after setting his quill down
"Your mothers recipe?" Elrond questioned
"Of course it is, Lindir helped me" Bilbo said
"I am going to have to get it off of you" Elrond said
"Lindir wrote it down when I told him, you already have it" Bilbo replied before taking a bite out of his
"Of course he did" Elrond said

GREAT MIDDLE EARTH BAKEOFF: the fellowship edition
aka this is what happens when my mind runs free
Tumblr media
Aragorn mixes unusual flavors but somehow makes them work
However, making aesthetically pleasing cakes isn't his strong suit
Legolas, on the other hand, has the most beautiful and intricate decoration
Sometimes mixes interesting flavors, but the rest of the time his stuff tastes just a bit too bland; he will give a very poetic detailed description of why it is the way it is
Merry is there mostly for friendships and having fun (and trying others' recipes) HOWEVER he becomes ambitious and actually quite quite good
Frodo is the one who seems very put together until like the last 5 minutes when something goes terribly wrong (just imagine those compilation videos of like, cakes utterly falling apart and stuff)
Gimli as inspiration always uses flavors and traditions from back home (why is it spicy)
Also his ultimate goal is to just be ranked higher than Legolas but they're both pretty mid-tier
Boromir has a relatively weak start, but eventually gets gradually better and better; however he plays it pretty safe
Gandalf seems to be working extremely slowly most of the time and everyone wonders how he always manages to get everything perfectly done on time; and he has random smoking breaks and just wanders off to who knows where
Pippin is there because his cousins are there, but he turns out to have very whimsical, creative and Unconventionally good ideas; sings to himself while working
Sam makes the most calorie-rich stuff with really good quality ingredients, but he has to work on the presentation and the visual aspect
at the start he is unsure of himself and feels a bit inadequate but his confidence grows over time
He always jumps in to help anyone who needs helping
The judges are Eowyn, Arwen and Bilbo (I will not take criticism) + guest judge Elrond??

All headcanons in this blog support my “Sons of the Woodland King” storyline and universe.
I do research in order to weave together my personal imaginings with Tolkien’s canon as neatly as possible. I’m not here to insist that my HCs be embraced by anyone as “official”. They’re just one writer’s interpretation of Tolkien’s world, made for the enjoyment of those who like my take on it.
My SotWK Headcanons are "OPEN SOURCE". You may take any of the information you find here (including OC info) to use in your own fiction. No prior permission or credit to me is needed. (Although if you choose to give credit, it's much appreciated!)

I also have been frothing over the spa center comment.
…would love to hear your pj shade regarding Elrond and Rivendell pretty please though?
I'M GLAD I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE FOAMING AT THE MOUTH
okay so...regarding PJ shade............where the hell do I even begin.
I wanna preface this by saying that I do love the films. Like they're my childhood. They have a very special place in my heart and they remain my favorite films of all time. I also really love Hugo!Rond -- like I should think that's obvious considering my art and characterization are so largely based off of Hugo's portrayal, but that being said the films really did Elrond so dirty and I'll never forgive PJ for some of the choices he made and the things he chose to leave out -- not only because they hurt Elrond's characterization, but because they hurt all lot of other plotlines and characters as well.
So let's just start with the most egregious issue, which is by-and-large a directorial issue and not necessarily a script or acting issue: Elrond is kind as summer. And while we see that peeking through in certain moments (enough that those of us with daddy issues and/or a precursory knowledge of the character latched onto them...), this doesn't define Peter Jackson's Elrond. Peter Jackson's Elrond is cranky and tired and while that is a fundamentally interesting characterization, it isn't Tolkien's. Tolkien's Elrond isn't like this. He laughs with Bilbo! He tries to stop Pippin from going on the quest (but allows it in the end). He offers friendship to Thorin and hospitality to literally everyone. He carries his harp around with him and offers little tidbits about himself (I was the herald of Gil-Galad and marched with his host...). Elrond on the page just exudes warmth and generosity. Maybe he's tired & worn out and maybe he has lost a bit of hope by the time we get to the Third Age. Maybe. But that certainly isn't a defining trait. Tolkien's Elrond enthusiastically supported Aragorn (vs. Men? Men are weak. Etc. Etc. Etc.) -- there are just so many weird choices that were made in line delivery and energy that are directorial choices for the story which PJ wanted to tell. Hugo Weaving is completely capable of carrying the right energy when directed to! It's not a Hugo problem! We see him teasing Bilbo a bit in Unexpected Journey and being kinda snarky with Thorin and having some playful energy there. It's that Peter Jackson decided that wasn't how he wanted to portray Elrond. And so we end up with this weird stiff character that doesn't look anything like Tolkien's Elrond unless you squint and do a lot of mental gymnastics (which I constantly do).
And the thing is, I would like to give the portrayal the benefit of the doubt and say 'well it really isn't THAT bad', because I look at it through the rose-colored glasses of nostalgia and my own love for my blorbo. But people who are casual watchers of the films, or people who are getting introduced to story for the first time (I've had the joy of getting to introduce a lot of people to the films, and have seen a lot of first reactions on Youtube) -- the knee jerk reaction to Peter Jackson's Elrond is what's his problem? if you don't have the context. And that makes me really sad.
And I really do have to put it down to Peter Jackson wanted to tell a certain story. Because it isn't hard to fix this. Most of the lines are fine. You just have to tell Hugo to exude a different kind of energy in them. That scene in the extended edition with Elrond and Aragorn at Gilraen's memorial is awesome, but you never get the sense that Elrond raised Aragorn. There's no warmth to that scene. And that comes down to direction. Viggo and Hugo are amazing actors. If you told them "hey, you guys have a father-son relationship and you're reminiscing over someone that you both cared about" then they could have played it that way and it would have been so good. But you never get that sense.
That comes down to the weird completely contrived conflict Peter Jackson wanted of "Elrond as the antagonist to Beren & Luthien II electric boogaloo" -- which is...such a strange decision. Why make him Thingol 2.0? It's literally just an extra contrived plot point for added conflict and it isn't like we needed it. The films are three hours long each. Aragorn and Arwen didn't need an antagonist to their love story. It's lazy characterization and lazy storytelling and lazy direction. Again, Hugo Weaving is an excellent actor. Masterclass, in fact. And I understand the thought process of "he's afraid to lose his daughter" and I think that's really tasty characterization! I love playing with that characterization! But there is a way to direct and write that without making him an antagonist. You don't even need lines to show that. Maybe just one. Maybe two. But to be honest all you need is a LOT of strong acting on Hugo's part to show the internal conflict as Elrond is outwardly supporting the two of them because he wants them to be happy!
And then there's the uh...nerfing of Elrond.
To be fair, Elrond really is background on purpose in LOTR. He chooses to be a guide. He chooses to be the Dad Everyone Goes To rather than The Big Damn Hero, and that's awesome. That's why I love him! But again there are just the teeniest tiniest changes that could have been made to fix the fact that he's heavily nerfed. SWEET, so "thanks to the skills of Lord Elrond you are beginning to mend!" -- hey can we just, add a bit more weight to the fact that Elrond needed to use Vilya to do that and it pretty much sapped all of his strength? Can we add a bit more weight to how LONG that surgery took and the fact that NO ONE ELSE could have saved Frodo from a Morgul Blade. How about instead of "he needs Elvish medicine", say "we have to get him to Elrond" -- like, I know Arwen says this, but it just takes a few edits to make it abudantly clear that this has less to do with Elves in general and more to do with rings of power.
And then we get to the fjord with the Ringwraiths. I'm not one of those people who is mad that they gave the chase to Arwen rather than Glorfindel. I understand why that decision was made. Do I miss Glorfindel? Hell yeah! But I understand why that decision was made. I just wish that Peter Jackson hadn't also given Arwen the "call the river in fury" superpower. Why not have Elrond be the one to do that? Girlpower, sure. But Arwen's cool enough for having the chase scene against all nine nazgul. Let Elrond have his moment. It takes like one 50% opacity overlay edit to show us he's the one doing it. And this isn't even an Elrond issue so much as a nerfing the worldbuilding issue. We hear about the Three Rings in the prologue and then Peter Jackson promptly never mentions them again save for one deleted scene with Galadriel and Nenya. Until I read the books as an adult I had no idea Elrond and Gandalf had the other two. That's...a pretty egregious thing to leave out.
Peter saves himself somewhat with the faux Silm plot in The Hobbit films. TBH I forgive absolutely everything else about the Hobbit Films for the purpose of that tiny moment where Elrond teases Bilbo and invites him to stay (except it's only in the extended so....again, we see where PJ's priorities lie), and Elrond in that armor saying "you should have stayed dead" like adlkgh--- thank you my crops are watered and my skin is clear.
But it should not have taken Peter six movies to fix how badly he nerfed Elrond, and he didn't even really fix him.
All that to say: so many of my favorite Elrond scenes from the films (the Gilraen memorial, Elrond teasing Bilbo, etc), are scenes from extended cuts, meaning when editing Peter Jackson decided these scenes weren't essential to the story he was trying to tell. And sure, this sure as hell isn't "The Elrond Trilogy" -- but it doesn't have to be. Elrond has so little screentime in the books and Jirt still takes those few moments of screentime to tell us Elrond laughed. Elrond was kind as Summer. Elrond's house was safe and cozy and Evil Things Did Not Enter That Valley. Elrond raised Aragorn as his own son and loved him dearly. Elrond was Kind as Summer. Elrond was kind. Elrond was kind. Elrond was kind.
And that isn't how Peter Jackson chose to portray him. I can't fault the man for not having Elrond as a blorbo. We all have different blorbos and that's okay. The trouble is that Elrond is Jirt's blorbo. And Elrond, at his core -- just like Bilbo and Sam and Frodo -- carries the essential message of Tolkien. It isn't great flashy Acts of Heroism that save the world, but rather quiet courage, and kindness, and gardens and laughter and good food and cheer. Places of safety. Gentle guidance. Healing. Healing. Healing.
So that's why I just will never forgive what Peter Jackson did to Elrond. Elrond is good. He is kind. He is extremely powerful -- but he chooses to use that power to heal and guide. And the reason it makes me so mad is not because he's my blorbo (okay maybe it is a little bit), but because breaking Elrond's character in the films was completely unnecessary and completely avoidable. It's just that Peter Jackson chose to do things his way and tell the story he wanted to tell, rather than taking the time to make some small and easy directorial choices to make sure he got it right. And the end result is there is a depressingly large number of people who live their lives thinking that Elrond's that cranky "MeN aRe WeAk" killjoy dad who hates happiness and runs a glorified hotel, and it just kills me.

I was thinking about how, in fanfictions and in the fandom in general, Elrond is often depicted as a pure Noldorin lord, if not a die hard Fëanorian. And while I do enjoy Fëanorian!Elrond, the more I think about it the more I am convinced Elrond is not the fëanorian one of the twins. Elros is. Elros who adopted seven eight pointed stars as the heraldic device of his whole dynasty, a symbol still used 6000 years after his death. Elros who had Quenya be the official language of Númenor. Elros who decided to leave Arda for an unknown fate after his death; not Everlasting Darkness but not the rebirth in the bliss of Valinor either. He choose to go to a place Elves aren’t supposed to go, just like Fëanor and his sons went back to Beleriand. Elros, the mortal man, who decided to forge his own path in the world.
And I am not saying Elrond didn’t, because Eru knows how much strength, patience and stubbornness Elrond must have to become who he is in LotR. But when I first re-read LotR after reading the Silm, he did not strike me as Fëanorian at all (except for the no oath swearing rule that seems to apply in Rvendell). In fact, Elrond, and all three of his children, are defined by being half-Elven. Elrond is so much at the same time they had to creat a whole new category for him. He is described as kind as summer in The Hobbit, but also old and wise, and his friendly banter with Bilbo in FotR show he is also merry and full of humour. Elrond is both Elf and Man despite his immortality, and this is made quite clear in the text.
But. If I had to link him to an Elven clan, I’d say Elrond is more Sinda than Noldor, and even that is up to debate. Rivendell, this enchanting valley hidden from evil thanks to his power, is like a kinder version of Doriath. Yet, the name of Last Homely House and Elrond’s boundless hospitality make me think of Sirion: Rivendell is a place where lost souls can find s home, where multiple cultures live along each other in friendship and peace.
In FotR, Elrond introduces himself as the son of Eärendil and Elwing, claiming both his lineages instead of giving only his father’s name as is tradition amongst the Elves. It may be a political move, or it may be a genuine wish to claim his duality, his otherness, or even both at the same time. But from what is shown of Elrond in LotR, he seems to lean heavily in the symbols and heritage from the Sindar side of his family, rather than the Noldor one. I already gave the comparison with Doriath, but it seems history repeats itself as Arwen, said to be Lúthien reborn, chooses a mortal life. Yet Elrond doesn’t make the same mistake as Thingol by locking his daughter in a tower and sending her suitor to a deathly quest. Yes, he asks Aragorn to first reclaim the throne of Gondor before marrying Arwen, but this isn’t a whim on his part or an impossible challenge. Aragorn becoming king means that Middle-Earth is free from the shadow if Sauron and Arwen will live in peace and happiness. Which sounds like a reasonable wish for a parent to me.
Anyways, I went on a tangent, what strikes me with Elrond is his multiple identity. Elrond certainly has habits or traits coming from his upbringing amongst the Fëanorians, and he loved Maglor despite everything. The fact he is a skilled Minstrel shows he did learn and cultivate skills taught by a Fëanorion, that he is not rejecting them. There is a passage at the end of RotK, in the Grey Havens chapter, where Elrond is described carrying a silver harp. Is this a last relic from Maglor? Possible.
But while Elros choose the path of mortality and showed clear Noldorin influences in the kingdom he built, Elrond is happy in his undefined zone he lives in. He is an Elf, he is a Man, he is Sinda and Noldo and heir to half a dozen lost cultures and two crowns. He is the warrior and the healer, the only one of his kind in Middle-Earth. And that is why I will never tire of this character and I love so much fanworks depicting him as nuanced and multiple yet always recognisable as Elrond.

I feel like doing some liveblogging for today's entry because I love it a lot and I have Things To Say! Under a cut because this got longgggg
"They do not fear the Ringwraiths, for those who have dwelt in the Blessed Realm live at once in both worlds [...]"
I'm sorry, those who have lived in Valinor do what now???? I don't remember this ever being mentioned anywhere else
'Frodo was now safe in the Last Homely House east of the Sea. That house was, as Bilbo had long ago reported, 'a perfect house, whether you like food or sleep or story-telling or singing, or just sitting and thinking best, or a pleasant mixture of them all'. Merely to be there was a cure for weariness, fear, and sadness.'
This makes me tear up and I'm not sure why.
This is one of my favorite chapters in the whole trilogy. I just love how warm it feels. It's like curling up with a cozy blanket and a warm drink on a winter evening, but it's also like sitting in the sun on a bright summer day with a cool breeze in your hair at the same time.
'In the middle of the table, against the woven cloths upon the wall, there was a chair under a canopy, and there sat a lady fair to look upon, and so like was she in form of womanhood to Elrond that Frodo guessed that she was one of his close kindred. Young she was and yet not so. The braids of her dark hair were touched by no frost; her white arms and clear face were flawless and smooth, and the light of stars was in her bright eyes, grey as a cloudless night; yet queenly she looked, and thought and knowledge were in her glance, as of one who has known many things that the years bring. Above her brow her head was covered with a cap of silver lace netted with small gems, glittering white; but her soft grey raiment had no ornament save a girdle of leaves wrought in silver.'
MY QUEEN MY BELOVED THE LOVE OF MY LIFE IS HERE!!!! <333333 *ahem* anyway, moving on
The mention of Beorn's son and Bard's grandson being leaders of their respective folk really puts into perspective how the lifespans of Men compare to Dwarves and even Hobbits.
''I will come and see [the Lonely Mountain], if ever I can,' said Frodo.'
Hey. Want to feel sad with me? I don't think he ever gets to do this.
'This is the Hall of Fire,' said the wizard. 'Here you will hear many songs and tales – if you can keep awake. But except on high days it usually stands empty and quiet, and people come here who wish for peace, and thought. There is always a fire here, all the year round, but there is little other light.'
Actually obsessed with the Vibes of the Hall of Fire. It's one of the places in Middle Earth I would most like to visit. Also if it ever shows up in an adaptation I may perish of happiness.
'Why, sitting and thinking. I do a lot of that nowadays, and this is the best place to do it in, as a rule. Wake up, indeed!' he said, cocking an eye at Elrond. There was a bright twinkle in it and no sign of sleepiness that Frodo could see. 'Wake up! I was not asleep, Master Elrond. If you want to know, you have all come out from your feast too soon, and you have disturbed me – in the middle of making up a song. I was stuck over a line or two, and was thinking about them; but now I don't suppose I shall ever get them right. There will be such a deal of singing that the ideas will be driven clean out of my head. I shall have to get my friend the Dúnadan to help me. Where is he?' Elrond laughed. 'He shall be found,' he said. 'Then you two shall go into a corner and finish your task, and we will hear it and judge it before we end our merrymaking.'
Bilbo and Elrond's friendship means a great deal to me and I feel it is tragically underrated.
'Don't adventures ever have an end? I suppose not. Someone else always has to carry on the story.'
Oh no here come the tears again.
'Strider!' said Frodo. 'You seem to have a lot of names.'
Oh Frodo you haven't heard the half of it yet... Also this has been pointed out many times before but I love that Aragorn remains Strider to the hobbits long after they learn his true name. It's really cute <333
He turned to Strider. 'Where have you been, my friend? Why weren't you at the feast? The Lady Arwen was there.' Strider looked down at Bilbo gravely. 'I know,' he said. 'But often I must put mirth aside. Elladan and Elrohir have returned out of the Wild unlooked-for, and they had tidings that I wished to hear at once.'
*sigh* can't believe the Plot is making Aragorn miss out on quality time with his wifey :(( Also, twins mention!!! I love the twins dearly (mostly because of One Specific Fanfiction)
Near him sat the Lady Arwen. To his surprise Frodo saw that Aragorn stood beside her; his dark cloak was thrown back, and he seemed to be clad in elven-mail, and a star shone on his breast. They spoke together, and then suddenly it seemed to Frodo that Arwen turned towards him, and the light of her eyes fell on him from afar and pierced his heart.
THEY'RE TOGETHER!!!!! One of these days you will be getting my essay on Arwen's Presence in the narrative and that is a threat. Also she and Frodo have interesting potential as a dynamic. Also also if she looked directly at me my heart would also be very much pierced <333
That's all my thoughts I think! If you stayed until the end, thanks for your time <3

Bilbo struggled up the staircase, leaning heavily on the railing. A soft grunt escaped his lips as he pulled himself up the final step. Even simple things like stairs were getting harder in his old age. His many years were finally beginning to show.
“Ah, Bilbo,” Elrond smiled as he turned around. “I’m so glad you came. I’ve been working on a new poem and I’d love to hear your thoughts on it.” He frowned, noticing the hobbit’s labored breathing. “Are you alright? Are your knees ailing you again? I shall send Lindir to bring a salve.”
“No need,” Bilbo brushed his concerns off with a wave of his hand. “I just need a chair.” Elrond pursed his lips but did not continue his protests, instead guiding his friend to a seat and placing a cushion behind his back.
“Now,” Bilbo continued once he was settled. “What was this poem you were telling me about?”
The smile returned to Elrond’s face. “I have been trying to translate it into the common tongue but it does not fit quite as perfectly. Here is the verse that has been troubling me.”
“ With dignity above that of soldiers
The tree stands tall and proud in its sentry
Guarding the world of men in their folly
Men see only the use in cutting down
Or setting aflame to make short-lived light
Elves see the beauty of a tree alive
Breathing life into all that surrounds it ”
Bilbo couldn’t stop the grin spreading over his face as he looked fondly at the elf. “Positively sublime, my friend! You elves have a spectacular way with language. However, I would perhaps change the word folly to corruption. It’s a more impactful word and makes the wickedness of cutting down trees more pronounced.”
Elrond nodded thoughtfully. “I agree the word should be changed, but corruption has too many syllables. It would interrupt the pacing of the verse.” Bilbo furrowed his eyebrows and leaned back in his chair to think.
“Misdeeds? It keeps the pacing,” he offered, but Elrond was shaking his head before he finished.
“I’m afraid that still doesn’t fit quite right.” They sat for a moment in silence, pondering and enjoying one another’s company. Rivendell truly was a sight to behold in autumn, Bilbo mused. Of course, it was breathtaking all year round, but Bilbo found he liked it best when the leaves painted themselves in vibrant hues before drifting to the ground.
“You know, I’ve been working on a poem of my own,” he commented.
Elrond raised his eyebrows. “I’d love to hear it, if you are willing.”
Bilbo cleared his throat. “It’s not very long yet but here is what I have so far:"
" I knew an old elf named Elrond
With whom I loved to correspond
In Rivendell one day
He invited me to stay
And of it I am now rather fond ”
Arwen’s musical laugh announced her presence as she stepped delicately up to the balcony. “What a marvelous poem, Bilbo,” she praised. “We elves of Rivendell have become rather fond of you as well.” She set a tray down on the nearby table and crossed the room to clasp the old hobbit’s hands. “We shall forever sing ballads of the time when our halls were blessed with a halfling.”
Bilbo blushed and looked down. “Surely you exaggerate, but I thank you nonetheless.”
“My daughter speaks nothing but the truth.” Elrond declared. “Now, is this strawberry tea you’ve brought, my love?” he asked, opening the teapot and smelling the contents.
“Yes,” Arwen replied. “I know it’s Bilbo’s favorite.” The hobbit in question beamed at Arwen and squeezed her hands as Elrond poured the tea. Suddenly, Bilbo drew in a sharp breath.
“Blindness!” he exclaimed.
Arwen's eyebrows drew together. “I beg your pardon?”
“Sorry, not you dear Arwen,” BIlbo clarified. “I was reffering to Elrond’s poem.” He looked up at the older elf, who tilted his head thoughtfully. “It is the perfect word to show how men are ignorant of the worth of trees!”
“Yes, yes I think that would work. Men do show a shocking lack of proper reverence for forests.” Elrond walked over to Bilbo's chair, nodding as he continued. “Guarding the world of men in their blindness. Indeed, I quite like that.”
Elrond laid a hand on the old hobbit’s shoulder. “You have my deepest gratitude, mellon nin. I knew you could aid me.” Bilbo placed his hand over Elrond’s and grinned once again.
“Always happy to help a friend.”
