It was the fourth Tuesday in a row that you ate alone in your apartment. The fourth time Gavi had skipped out on your plans last minute, sending a quick half-hearted text about one event or the other.
The first time it was because Coach had asked Gavi to stay after practice, keen on teaching him the perfect one-touch shot. Then it was a missed dinner because Jordi Alba had invited him out with some other players, and he just couldn’t say no, because he was finally starting to feel like a part of the family - like the older players had finally started to respect him.
Of course you hadn’t minded the first few times, he had been apologetic enough, promising you that he would be there next time, but each next time took on the next week, and soon the prospect of next time didn’t hold as much meaning anymore. You were accustomed to reading those words by now, and you rarely took time to read over the dwindling text messages anymore, eyes only scanning for those two words, the ones that had become a staple in your relationship.
Next time.
Next time you would cook dinner for him and he would be there to eat it. Next time he would tell you he loved you in person, rather than getting an impassive ‘sorry cariño’. The thought of next time, which once seemed like a lifeline to you, had become a dull reminder of the boy who was just on the other side of the city, only a measly train ride separating you both. Yet the distance seemed much greater.
But now the football season was drawing to a close, and instead of being excited at the notion of having more time to spend together, you felt uneasy and on edge, almost as if you were waiting for the other shoe to drop, something to come up, making the distance between the two of you that much more tangible.
You felt your phone buzz next to you and your eyes unintentionally went to the clock.
9:45 pm.
The texts were getting later and later each time.
You already knew what awaited you, but you couldn’t help but scan the message regardless.
“Can’t come tonight, only have a few days till the season ends and the guys wanna make the most of it. Be there next time. Noche.”
There it was again, that unexplainable feeling in your chest, like your heart was always one step ahead of your brain, preparing for the loss of something that hadn’t yet left. Your mind was an incomprehensible mess, a jumble of contrasting thoughts and memories, forcing you to overthink situations and undervalue your emotions.
You lifted your head watching your roommate land with a thump on the couch beside you, “He canceled again, didn’t he?”
You opened your mouth, an excuse on the tip of your tongue.
She held up her hand, “Don’t try to defend him. He knows it isn’t fair.”
You avoided her gaze, “You don’t get it. He’s really in demand and-”
“It doesn’t matter that he’s famous or a professional athlete, that doesn’t discredit his actions, or put the blame on anyone but him.”
She continued, “Look Gavi’s a good guy, I like him,” you stared at her, “I do! But he’s stupid if he doesn’t realize that he’s losing you. I know you, and while you might make excuses for him now, I know that sooner or later you’re going to notice that he hasn’t been treating you like you deserve, and you’ll be smart enough to leave.”
You felt the impact of her words full force, like a sledgehammer beating into your body. All the signs were there, right in front of your face, and you had been turning a blind eye, not wanting to admit what your heart already knew.
You knew it. The distance you had felt hadn’t been in vain – every day you could feel the connection between the two of you chip away, so small, you wouldn’t think to notice it till you stood back and looked at the bigger picture.
As a result of both your busy schedules, you both had come up with the idea of having Tuesday night, the most boring day of the week as agreed on, reserved for just the two of you. On Tuesday you didn’t have classes that ran well past dinner time or have to pick up late-night shifts at the restaurant, and he didn’t have evening practice. It was perfect. Tuesday was yours.
Except it had been four weeks since you’d had a proper conversation with Gavi, and you couldn’t help but see the difference in your relationship when you first got together, both eager and determined to spend as much time together as possible, to now, where even if you attended his games, you two still managed to get away without speaking.
You shook your head, “I-I need to take a walk.”
She reached over placing a hand on your shoulder, “Y/n. I’m sorry-”
You shook it off, standing up, “No it’s ok, it’s not your fault. I just need to clear my head.”
You felt the cool night breeze hit you as you walked the streets of Barcelona. It was unusually quiet in this part of town, the lights from the main strip didn’t reach this far out, and for a moment the quiet reminded you of your hometown.
If you closed your eyes, it was almost like you were fifteen again, back in your childhood bedroom, before the ideas of pretty boys with big brown eyes and the weight of managing both university and a job plagued all your thoughts.
You reached a lookout point, the top of the hill dropping to show you the expansive city below. You stared out, the buildings looked so small up here, barely more than a glowing dot in the dark, the cars a blur of soft yellow. You wondered which tiny dot Gavi was in. You wondered if he had checked his phone, seeing that you hadn’t texted him back like you usually did. You wondered if he even cared.
You shook your head trying to get rid of the unwanted thoughts.
Your relationship with Gavi was good. He made you laugh like nobody else, whispering secrets in each other’s ears like schoolchildren, making forts out of old sheets in his childhood bedroom when you met his family for the first time. You remembered his sweet smile, the way his eyes would crinkle unintentionally when he couldn’t hold back his excitement or happiness. You remembered confiding in him about school, how you were so stressed because you couldn’t manage eighteen credits while simultaneously holding a job that required you to be on your feet for hours at a time. You could still feel the soft caress of his hand, as he squeezed yours, providing you comfort, cracking a badly executed joke here and there just to get you to smile while listing a hundred reasons why if anyone could do it, it would be you.
So, if he made you feel all those things, why did his absence make you feel so tiny, so insignificant?
Your finger hovered over the call button, and you hit it hesitantly.
You just wanted to hear his voice.
That would be enough.
It rang seven times before the line went dead.
It took you a moment to realize you hadn’t put your phone up to your ear, waiting with bated breath for the timer on the screen to start, indicating he had picked up, but it never did.
You stuffed your phone back into your pocket, the same unsteady feeling in your heart strumming.
Once.
Twice.
Then it was gone.
You came home to a quiet apartment and your roommate already asleep.
You shuffled into your room silently, you would give it one more week you decided. Next time would be the last.
The next week came, and while it was the first week Gavi had off from training, he had already planned to go to Ibiza to attend a music festival with his hometown friends. He had invited you, but it was more of an afterthought, and you couldn’t find it in yourself to go because of rushed ‘you can come if you want’ and a barely there apology so you left it.
You got an ‘I’ll miss you’ text from him and for a moment it made you smile, filling you with warmth. However, an ‘I miss you’ only did so much, and other than his sweet messages, there was really no intent behind his words.
Now it had been two days since Gavi had gotten back from his Ibiza trip, and you couldn’t hide the surprise on your face when you glanced over and saw a Facetime call from Gavi.
When was the last time the two of you had Facetimed? Maybe two months ago? It was much easier to send a text, the times both of you were free were few and far between.
You answered the call, pushing your textbook to the side. The dark grey interior of Gavi’s car greeted you.
“Hello?” You asked.
“Hey, Y/n long time no talk.” Gavi joked, but you felt your stomach flip at the truth behind his words.
“I can’t see you.” You said.
“Oh shit, did I accidentally Facetime? My bad I told Siri to call and she must have Facetimed instead. Let me call you.”
You went to speak but heard the three beeps indicating the call had been cut.
You heard the phone ring again and bit back a sigh. You just wanted to see his face.
You answered on the second ring.
“Hey sorry about that. I wanted to call and tell you that I’m back from Ibiza.”
“Yeah, I know.” You admitted, “I remembered.”
There was a beat of silence.
“Well, anyways I wanted to ask you to come with me to the Spanish football gala tomorrow.”
“Tomorrow?”
You heard some shuffling and suddenly Gavi’s voice was much clearer and closer to the phone. You assumed he took it off speaker.
“Can you not come?”
You hesitated, “Uhm I’m not sure. It’s so last minute and I’m already scheduled at the restaurant tomorrow.”
“Can’t you just take off?” He persisted.
You felt your brow furrow, “I’m already on the schedule, I can’t just decide to take off the day before, I need to find someone to replace me.”
“Ok, tell whoever that I’ll sign a jersey for them if they do.”
You suddenly felt angry. Why did he think that you could only get a day off work if he helped you out? Were you not capable of handling your own situations? You hated feeling like this, like you weren’t even your own person, just a shadow of who you were with.
“No that’s fine. I’ll just take off like you said, simple.” You couldn’t help but let the bitterness seep into your voice.
He went to say something, probably sensing the shift in your mood, but you cut him off, “I have to go. Bye Gavi.”
You hung up before he could respond.
Finding someone to replace your shift was easier said than done, but after some back and forth, and a promise to Marcus to cover his next two shifts, you were free.
Free to prance around in a hall filled with people you barely knew, with a boy who you thought about more in your memories than you saw in real life.
The night of the gala arrived, and you were decked out, wearing the earrings Gavi had gifted you for your one-year anniversary paired with a necklace you had received after graduating high school.
Gavi had originally said he would pick you up but had sent a quick text earlier in the morning explaining that the team was getting ready together at a hotel, and to just meet him at the venue.
Your roommate had agreed to drive you and you gave her a grateful smile as you got in the car.
“Ana thank you for taking me.”
She brushed the comment off playfully, “No problem. Gotta step up when Gavi steps down.”
You let out a short laugh, “My hero.”
You got to the venue a couple of minutes before you had planned to meet Gavi and nervously walked around, staying out of the path of cameras.
You found someone to take you to a tent where some Barca staff were waiting for the players to start the program.
You walked in, a surprised look taking over your face once you noticed Pedri and a few other players in the corner.
You weren’t aware that some of the players from the hotel had arrived yet.
Pedri noticed your entrance and came over to say hello.
You gave him a quick hug, making casual small talk.
Just ask him, a voice in the back of your head urged.
Finally, you bit the bullet, attempting to sound as casual as possible, “How did you guys get here so early? I thought everyone was leaving the hotel at 6.”
“Ehh, it wasn’t that important, so I skipped it. Half the guys didn’t go anyway, and the other half just went to play FIFA. Besides I beat them every time, so it gets a little boring after a while.”
You tried to laugh at his joke, but could only manage a watery smile, mind running a mile a minute.
So Gavi hadn’t actually needed to go but chose to.
Leaving you alone.
Again.
It wasn’t a big deal by itself. But it was the fact that this was just another item you could add to your ever-growing list of things Gavi cared about more than you. You wondered briefly if you had been wrong, and if he had missed some other event to be there with you, only to remind yourself that you hadn’t seen him in a month, so no, he hadn’t.
You were still grappling with your emotions when Gavi arrived, unsure whether to confront him or just let this be another thing you swept under the rug.
Your reunion, if you could even call it that, was lackluster at best. He had walked in with some of his teammates, immediately going to greet the rest of his team, completely ignoring you standing on the right side of the room with Pedri.
It was only once he asked where Pedri was that someone pointed the two of you out.
You felt your body deflate; he hadn’t even asked for you.
Were you overthinking things again? Maybe he had just forgotten in the excitement of seeing his whole team for the first time after the season ended?
Gavi made his way over to the two of you, reaching out to Pedri first. You watched as they exchanged a hug before Gavi’s eyes floated over to yours.
“Hey.” His voice was casual, like he was greeting a mailman, or thanking the cashier.
“Hi.”
You closed the space, attempting to hug him, but he grabbed your shoulders stopping you, looking down.
You followed his gaze.
“I don’t want to wrinkle the dress.”
You felt your heart thud against your chest, and while you knew he only had good intentions, the rejection still stung.
You stepped out of his embrace, watching his hands drop to his sides, “Okay.”
The carpet went by in a blur, you posed with Gavi for a few photos before moving to the side and letting him enjoy the spotlight, he had worked hard for it. You took a couple of photos with some of the other teammate's girlfriends and wives before you headed inside.
Once inside, there was still some time left before the actual dinner portion of the gala started. The gala was held for all Spanish football clubs as a celebration of their hard work during the season. It was also a great event to network, giving players the ability to talk with different coaches and directors they otherwise might not have gotten the chance to, allowing for discussions of thinly veiled preseason transfers to commence without the fear of unwanted ears listening in.
You found Gavi in the crowd quickly, linking your arm with his. He looked over at you, a smile taking over his features once he noticed you.
“Glad you found me.”
You noticed with great relief that his eyes still crinkled in the corners when he looked at you,
“I always do.”
The next however many minutes spent till dinner service started comprised of Gavi talking with various different players and directors as you stood like a shiny accessory off his arm, too insignificant to be acknowledged in conversation.
The call for dinner provided you solace from the repetitive conversations and mundane questions. You took a seat next to Gavi and were confused to find both Joao Felix and Antoine Griezmann seated at your table.
You leaned into Gavi, “I thought the clubs sat together?”
“Me too. I think they’re doing alphabetical tonight though.” He whispered.
“Which one’s your least favorite?” You looked up shocked at Gavi’s question, watching a boyish grin take over his features as he tried to hide his laugh, interlacing your fingers on your lap.
You shoved into him lightly, “They’re sitting right there!”
He leaned in closer, nose softly grazing your ear as he spoke, “Yeah but between me and you, I think Joao could have had a better season in Chelsea.”
You shook your head in disbelief, fighting back the smile that was threatening to spill out. Your eyes caught his and for a second it seemed like you had been transported back in time, back to when these types of moments were the standard not the exception, back when it felt like you were on each other sides, back when laughter was the antidote instead of tense silences filled with awkward hello’s.
His eyebrow lifted ask if to ask if you agreed with him, and a small murmur of agreement from you was all he needed before he opened his mouth, ready to hammer his point home, but his attention switched last second.
It was like you could visibly see the shift in his demeanor. First, it was his eyes glancing past yours, seeing the midfielder approaching. Then it was the subtle grip on your hand loosening, his fingers slipping through the gaps. Next, it was the complete shift in body, his posture straightening as he leaned his body away from yours, position shifting to face Pedri who had sat in the spot next to him.
To his credit, Pedri acknowledged the both of you but it was clear Gavi paid no mind to you, not evening sparing you a glance as he became immersed in a conversation with Pedri.
You tried to pretend it didn’t affect you and while you could lie to everyone else, you couldn’t lie to yourself. You had built up this evening up so much in your head, telling yourself that tonight would be the shifting point in your relationship and that everything would go back to the way it once was, but it was shaping up to be another Tuesday you had become all too familiar with.
Why did it feel like you were always competing for his attention?
Your mind was reeling, all the small actions Gavi did that you kept pushing aside, were floating back to the surface, each little remark or dismissal a little tug on your heartstrings till you were sure that if you stayed at the table a for a moment longer you wouldn’t be able to stop the onslaught of tears quickly approaching.
You stood from the table abruptly, catching a few people’s attention, but you gave them a polite smile, or at least you hoped it had been polite, you couldn’t focus on anything but the stinging in your eyes and the sinking feeling in your stomach.
You swiftly walked towards the restroom, glancing over your shoulder to see if anyone had noticed but your eyes fell on Gavi’s form. He hadn’t even bothered turning around.
Of course, he hadn’t.
Somehow that hurt more than anything else.
You were immensely grateful for the single-use restroom as you locked yourself in, shaky hands coming to steady yourself on the sink.
Don’t cry. Don’t cry.
You were internally screaming at yourself, begging yourself to keep yourself together but the feeling was too overwhelming and before you could stop you felt the first tears slip down. Your shoulders shook as you forced yourself to be silent, embarrassed about someone walking by and overhearing you pitying yourself.
One hand covered your mouth as you muffled your sobs, while the other dug into the stupid marble sink until the skin was pink and indented. The pain acted as a distraction from the unbearable pressure in your chest, and you instinctively pushed your hand harder into the sink.
Your fingers felt numb as you slowly removed them, closing your eyes to steady yourself. It was obvious that you weren’t in the best mental state, but you couldn’t exactly sit in the bathroom for the next hour to sort it out. You had to clean yourself up and go back to pretending.
Yes, pretending, you realized, was exactly what you had been doing. This whole night you had been pretending, pretending everything was okay, pretending that your relationship was fine when in truth you couldn’t even remember what Gavi’s laugh sounded like.
When had it become all pretend?
Was there anything left here? Were your best years behind you both?
These unanswered questions haunted you as you calmed yourself down, wrapping around you like a blanket, one that provided you no comfort but rather a feeling of suffocation.
Finally, your eyes had dried, and the redness had faded significantly. You had gotten your breathing under control, and you felt a little lighter having stopped denying what had been plaguing your mind for weeks now.
You took one final glance in the mirror, smoothing out your dress as you exited the restroom.
You walked slowly back to the table. You had decided that if you could just get through tonight, go home, and cry and think some more, then by tomorrow morning you would be able to talk to Gavi and decide what to do.
But that plan had flown out the window when you arrived back at the table to a confused Gavi.
It seemed he had finally noticed your absence.
“Where did you go? They served dinner 15 minutes ago.”
“I had to use the restroom.”
“For 15 minutes?”
“There was a queue.” You lied.
He seemed to accept your answer and you chose to focus on your food rather than him.
You were halfway through your meal when you noticed Gavi giving you a double take from the corner of your eye.
“Your eyes are red.” He spoke in a hushed voice.
“I don’t know why.”
“Are you sure?” His attention was beginning to slip again, eyes darting back between you and Pedri.
“Yes, I’m fine.” You heard your voice waver on the last syllable, a tick you had when you were lying, and Gavi immediately picked up on it, facing you fully.
“What’s wrong?”
You shook your head not wanting to get into everything here.
“I’m ok.”
“You’re not.”
“Gavi.” You warned.
“What happened? Did someone say something?”
“No. Just drop it please.” Your voice had gone soft, tired of defending yourself.
“Y/n just tell me, I’ll help.” He urged.
You stayed quiet.
“What’s wrong?” He asked again, adamant to get an answer.
You felt yourself grow annoyed, why couldn’t he just let it go? Why was he suddenly interested in how you felt? You were just trying to protect what little left the two of you had and he seemed intent on destroying it.
“It’s you.”
He looked taken aback, eyes pooling with hurt and confusion, his body slightly deflating, “W-what?”
The moment was interrupted when the announcer took over the stage, beginning the presentation for the night, highlighting a few key players and matches.
You looked away first, turning to face the stage, clapping along, acting as though you couldn’t feel Gavi’s gaze burning into your back as he desperately tried to get your attention.
Once the presentation was over you were quick to excuse yourself, using the pretense of going to get a drink as a getaway.
You held your breath as you walked, praying Gavi wouldn’t follow you, and while he got up immediately once he noticed, he was quickly interrupted by another player coming to congratulate him, allowing you to slip away while he watched helplessly.
You let out a huff, leaning against the bar trying to slow your heartbeat.
“Long day?”
You looked over to see Joao standing next to you, watching as the bartender poured his drink.
“Something like that.”
He nodded, “Me too. Been a long couple of days actually.”
You smiled, “Actually, it’s been a long couple of weeks.”
He turned his head to look at you, “I take it back. It’s actually been a long couple of months.”
You raised your hand in mock surrender, “Ok I can’t beat that.”
He grinned, “Yeah not many people can.”
Your expression matched his own, and you gave your order to the bartender before turning to face him again, “So how’s the season been?”
“Shit. Honestly, I’m not even sure why I’m here I played for Chelsea this season not Athletico.”
You couldn’t help but laugh at his abruptness.
“Yeah, I saw your first game. A red card first match is pretty brutal.”
His grin only widened, “Oh keeping tabs are we?”
You gave him a playful glare, “Of course gotta know how Barca’s competition is doing.”
“Oh, so you’re a Barca girl?”
“Since the day I was born.” You revealed proudly.
And it was true, even before you had met Gavi, you had loved Barcelona. Growing up in a family of football lovers, your family had declared FC Barcelona as their home club, and you had witnessed so many legends play for Barcelona and so many underdogs find their true passion at the club.
“Can I tell you a secret?” he asked, and you gave him a nod of encouragement, pretending to zip your lips shut making him smile, “Ok well it’s always been my dream to play for Barcelona. Messi was always an idol to me.” He confessed.
Your mouth dropped open in shock before you abruptly shut it, your eyes almost widening comically as you spoke excitedly, “What oh my gosh. I’m in shock. Messi? But you play with Ronaldo!” You gasped.
He laughed at your facial expression, as he whispered, “I know! That’s why it’s a secret.”
You nodded along with his words, sending him a duh expression, “Of course, I won’t say anything I promise.”
“Promise what?”
Gavi had appeared by your side, a firm hand set on your waist, as he gently tugged you back into his body.
You peeked up at Gavi to see he was already looking down at you, jaw set. You gulped.
“Nothing much, just talking about the season.” You replied.
You saw Gavi’s eyes flicker between the two of you before he brought you closer, “Can we please talk?”
You bit your lip unsure but nodded.
He slipped his hand into yours as he led you to a quieter area. You waved goodbye to Joao as Gavi pulled you through the crowd, and he held his drink up in response.
He was a nice guy. You hoped next season would be better for him than the last.
He guided you to a standing table and propped your hands on the table as he played with the ring on your index finger.
“This a really pretty ring, is it new?” He asked eyes focused on your fingers.
“No, I got it last month.”
“I haven’t seen you wear it.”
“I’ve worn it every day since I got it.”
“Oh.”
You gently removed your hand from his, knowing that talking circles about something so small was going to get you nowhere.
“What do you want Gavi?” You asked quietly.
His voice came out gravelly, “I want to know how I let it get to the point where you feel more comfortable calling me Gavi rather than Pablo.”
His words when straight to your heart, and you could feel his pain almost as much as you could feel your own.
“I-I don’t know.”
You heard his breath falter, “I miss you calling me Pablo. Hell – I even miss you calling me Pablito. I’d take anything over whatever this is.” He gestured pointing between the two of you.
“Ok then let’s talk about it. Let’s talk about where it went wrong.”
His eyes lifted at your words, “Why are you speaking in the past tense?”
You remained silent.
“Amor please, why are you speaking in past tense?” You could hear the panic building in his voice.
“I think we don’t spend enough time together.”
“Ok we can fix that. No problem.” He agreed, desperate to save what was slowly unraveling.
“But do you want to? Fix it I mean?”
“Of course, I do. Please just tell me what to do and I’ll do it.” His voice was almost near begging, and you knew without a doubt that you were in a similar state.
You couldn’t believe that this was happening here, in front of all these people, but it wasn’t fair to either of you to hold it any longer. You had to have this conversation sooner or later and it seemed like tonight was the time for it.
“Sometimes I feel like you don’t have time for me.” You finally admitted what you had been feeling for the last month.
He shook his head rapidly, “I do! But I mean we both have such busy schedules, you have even less time than I do with school.” he argued, “You also have work so that cuts down on the time we have too, but I’m not complaining.”
You were trembling with anger as you spoke, but you kept your voice low, “Yes, because I have to work a job to be able to afford college. I hate the hours probably more than you do, but I do it because I have to. I don’t have an option. I want to go to school? I have to fund it. But you? You didn’t have to go out with the guys after practice or stay around Ansu’s to play FIFA, but you did. That was a choice you made.”
He opened his mouth to retaliate but you weren’t done, “And I’m not even mad about that. I’m mad that for the last month, you’ve put me below every other person in your life, treated me like I’m dispensable, someone who you only consider when you need something. I feel cheap. Like something you only want when it’s convenient to you.”
“That’s not true. You’re my girlfriend!” His voice shook as he spoke, and you realized he was probably just as scared as you were.
“Then why do I feel like I’m not?” Your voice came out soft, barely above a whisper, but it felt like delivering the final blow to an already sinking battleship.
You felt his eyes on you, eyes glazing over as hundreds of unushered words filled the space between you, but the moment was cut short, and you had to remind yourself that you were in public as Xavi approached the two of you.
You gave Xavi a quick hug before he congratulated Gavi on a great season.
Gavi only nodded, murmuring short responses, eyes glancing at you every few seconds like he was scared you would disappear from his life if he wasn’t watching.
He left after a moment, and then the two of you were alone again.
“I’m sorry Y/n, I had no idea that’s why you were working. I would’ve given you the money if you just said something-“
“I don’t want your money Gavi! It’s yours, not mine.” You said exasperated.
“C’mon Y/n you know I have enough to provide for the both of us. You don’t have to work-“
“I don’t want that! In fact, right now I don’t even want to be in this relationship!”
The boy physically shrunk back at your words, your admission sending him into silence as he processed your words.
Finally, he spoke, head shaking in denial, not wanting to admit what was right in front of him, “I-I don’t understand.”
You wanted to yell at him to notice all the signs you’d been sending him, beg him to understand the things you couldn’t say but had always been lurking in the shadows, easy enough to make out if you just paid attention. You wanted to scream that it wasn’t fair, it wasn’t fair that Gavi got to pursue his passion while you were being told to give up yours. Your head was filled with millions of things you wanted to say to him, thousands of little moments you wanted to share with him, you wanted to confide in him about how scared you were, how you had never felt like this in your life, how the thought of him slowly falling out of love with you was ripping your insides apart, making you sick to your stomach. There were so many things but not one left your mouth.
“I know you don’t.” Your voice sounded tired, even to your own ears, and you wondered if this was it. If this is where the two of you parted ways.
“I-I’m just going to go home.”
“I’ll grab our coats.”
You placed your hand gently on his, giving him a sad smile, “It’s ok. I think I’ll go alone.”
Neither of you could deny what it meant.
He ducked his head so you couldn’t see his red eyes. There was a moment of silence, and you could tell he was fighting with himself, trying to figure out what to do to stop the inevitable, until he slowly nodded,
“Ok.”
He had just sealed your relationship closed, something you were grateful for because you knew you couldn’t have done it yourself.
He didn’t lift his head as you walked away, and you didn’t blame him.
You grabbed your coat quickly, bidding goodbye to a few people as you made your way out of the hall.
As you walked down the hallway towards the main doors you realized you didn’t have a ride back. Your roommate had dropped you off and you assumed Gavi would drop you back. Well, that wasn’t happening now. Train it was. One glance out the window told you it was raining, downpouring to be exact.
How fitting. At least the weather matched your mood.
You stepped outside, immediately becoming drenched, but somehow you found comfort in it, at least this way no one could see you cry.
You were about halfway down the steps when you heard the door slam open, yelling coming from behind you.
You spun around, surprised to see Gavi stepping into the rain, “Please stay. Please.”
You stood frozen, unsure of what to say.
You were sure he wouldn’t follow you. But he had.
He kept taking steps closer to you, closing the distance, till you were only two steps apart, “Stay.”
His eyes searched your own, looking for something, maybe a sign that there was hope, something you weren’t sure you could provide.
“Just let me go. We can talk about this tomorrow.”
He shook his head, breath unsteady, “No I can’t. I can’t. I feel like if I let you go now, I’ll never see you again.”
You bit your cheek looking away, he was right. After tonight you had no intention of talking to him again.
His shoulders drooped at your silence, and he sat down on the steps of the building, harsh rain pounding down on him, matting his hair and drenching his extremely expensive suit, but he didn’t seem to care, “I hate fighting with you.”
You glanced down at his figure, watching him sit in the rain with his head in his hands, utterly defenseless.
“But I hate even more that it’s my fault, and that I couldn’t see what I was doing until I felt what you did, just for a second, and it hurt like hell.”
“I should have been there for you. I should have made time for you. I knew what I was doing wasn’t right but then I kept thinking it’s fine I’ll make it up to her next time, but next time never happened because I never showed up. I guess I was just so focused on making sure my teammates all liked me, and they had just stopped treating me like a kid, finally inviting me places - and I’m not using that as an excuse because I know it’s a shit one, it’s on me. Nobody forced me to do anything, I just wanted to feel included, and I put everyone else’s feelings above yours when yours was the one that was the most important to me.”
He finally lifted his head, and he was close enough that you could see the tears streaming down his face as he looked intently at you, almost like he was trying to memorize you, “If you want to walk away you can, you should - I’ll understand. I just wanted to apologize, really apologize, and own up to everything I did. I love you, and I promise you I won’t take anyone for granted the way I did with you.”
Your expression mirrored his own, and the tears were falling freely at his confession now that it was just the two of you. All the things you had wanted him to realize he had. All the things you wished he had said, he finally did.
But was it too late?
“Thank you, Pablo.”
He let out a short laugh through his tears, “No, thank you.”
You gave him a soft smile before you put distance between the two of you, letting the rain mask the sound of you leaving.
The lights from the venue grew dimmer as you continued walking, and you spared one last glance over your shoulder before it disappeared from view, seeing Gavi’s tiny figure rooted in place, watching you leave.
Your steps faltered.
How could you leave this relationship, this boy, when every single warning sign was going off in your brain, telling you to turn around and fight, to not give up? He had understood, he had understood exactly what you had felt, and had owned up to his mistakes, what else could he have done? He couldn’t go back and make it better, but he could change the way he treated you, but how would you acknowledge the change if you didn’t stick around?
It didn’t feel right walking away.
You thought you would feel content, feel like the pressure was lifting from your shoulders, but the dropping feeling in your stomach was multiplying, and your heart was constricting painfully at the thought of never seeing him, never laughing with him, never kissing him again, at the idea of falling in love with someone that wasn’t him.
You never ran faster in your life.
Let him be there. Please let him be there.
You didn’t know how you could explain yourself if you had to walk back into the event sopping wet, eyes puffy, and nose runny.
You couldn’t stop the wide smile that stretched across your face as he realized he was right where you left him.
You sat next to him and he didn’t notice until you spoke.
“Pablo.”
His head shot upon hearing your voice, and his face lifted for a second before falling again, “Di-Did you forget something?”
You nodded.
“Ok I can get it for you, what is it?” He cleared his throat, trying to make his voice clear.
You shifted closer to him, bodies pressed against each other, “I forgot that I love you. I love you and I want to work this out. I’m happy that you took responsibility and I believe you. I believe that you won’t do it again. But I should apologize too – I also wasn’t fair to you, and I did things that I shouldn’t have just to get back at you for making me feel so small.”
“I’m sorr-”
You cut him off, “Let’s stop apologizing.”
He nodded, eyes looking at you with nothing but love and admiration,
“Ok but we’ll have to work on our communication.” He said, and you hummed in agreement.
You touched your forehead with his, staring at each other with baited breaths until he finally closed the distance and kissed you. After a month of not seeing each other, you were finally kissing, pouring all your emotions, all your love, all your pain into the kiss, making a promise to be there for each other, and it felt like coming home.

cheerleader II Grace Clinton x Reader
Tumblr media
masterlist I word count: 1882
a/n: inspired by the request if we write for Grace Clinton, enjoy. 🤍
“Hurry up, Celin, I don’t want to be too late for the match.”, Grace Clinton told the fellow football player impatiently, the arms crossed over her chest. The rest of the friend’s group had already been ready to leave fifteen minutes ago.
The Norwegian meanwhile took a final glance at her bathroom mirror, checking if the curls she just made fell right, before announcing:” I’m coming.”
“Finally.”, Grace sighed relived.
Eyerolling Celin padded the shoulder of her friend: “Don’t be annoying. We’ll be on time.”
“Someone can’t wait to be the personal cheerleader of her girlfriend today.”, Khiara Keating teased the fellow Lionesses teammate with a huge grin on her face.
When the goalkeeper mentioned you Grace cheeks turned immediately red which Charli Grant couldn’t help but to point out in a swooning voice:” I think it’s adorable. Look at how much she’s blushing!”
“Oh, shut up!”, your girlfriend begged annoyed who felt her face becoming even hotter than before.
Amused Celin commented: “Disgustingly cute.”
“Celin!”, she yelled at her.
The Norwegian looked innocently at her teammate:” What?”
“Stop it. No one said it was disgustingly cute when you got engaged.”, Grace reminded the woman who was only two years older than her.
Smiling at the memory Celin admitted: “ No, that’s true. Bethany was really annoying about it though like a mum. She asked me if I was sure about it? And that we’re still in the puppy love phase, blab la bla.”
“She just doesn’t want you to make a mistake.”, your girlfriend replied softly.
Dramatically the midfielder groaned:” Yes, and that’s sweet of her but she really needs to stop using dog metaphors all the time.”
The smile on Grace’s lips grew even bigger as she thought of Beth Englands golden retrievers who were adorable in her eyes and made her wish that you both would eventually get a puppy together, maybe the summer would be the perfect time for it:”  Everyone loves dogs though.”
“And her golden retrievers are so cute.”, Charli added in a tone she usually reserved for Harper.
The youngest of the four, Khiara was looking alarmed at the time on her phone:” Girls now we really got to hurry up!”
“Tell that to Celin.”, Grace scoffed.
She pouted: “It wasn’t my fault!”
“Yes, it was.”, your girlfriend laughed.
As they stepped out Charli was putting an arm on each of the best friends, while reminding them why they were heading out today: “Come on, girls. It’s time to watch some grassroots football, now.”
Your teammate Ava bumped her shoulder against yours as you walked out on the pitch together. With a smirk she commented: “Y/n, havd you spotted your cheerleader already?”
“Not yet. I fear they run a little late. She's bringing some friends with her today.”, you replied, your gaze wandering towards the entrance of the football pitch. But there was still no sign of Grace.
Avas eyes widened: “There's even more of them coming?!”
You nodded patiently: “Yeah, Celin, Charli and Khiara are coming as well.”
“Holy F-…”, Ava replied, stopping herself before your coach could hear her.
Your goalkeeper, Max, joined your conversation, lifting their eyebrow at you; “But you warned them that we do this just for fun and that we are not really good in our league, right?!”
Grimacing, you looked at your two teammates; “Uhm…”
“What the hell, y/n? We're totally going to embarrass ourselves in front of them!”, Ava yelled out, her voice rising with anxiety. She exchanged a panicked look with Max.
“Girls, calm down…”, you started, fighting back a smile.
The defender shook her head, her blonde ponytail swinging: “How?!”
You rolled your eyes with fondness: “You guys know Grace already and you never had a problem playing in front of her.”
“That’s different!”, Max interrupted you but the corners of their mouth curved into slight grin.
“Yeah, she’s only there to look at you with heart eyes during the match.”, Ava agreed, giggling.
You could feel your cheeks heat up: “Oh come on…”
Max shrugged nonchalantly: “She’s got a point.”
“Her friends are very nice, you’ll see.”, you promised them while you caught yourself looking for your girlfriend again.
Ava raised her eyebrows: “Let's hope so.”
“I guess we should start warming up.”, Max changed the topic and started to jog across the grass.
Ava clapped her hands: “Yes, let’s go.”
Max looked back over their shoulder towards you: “Come on!”
Laughing, you followed them: “I’m coming, children!”
“Children? You’re the child here!”, the goalkeeper laughed.
“Since she got into uni she thinks she’s an adult.”, Ava continued to tease.
“Hey!”, you protested. You were not even the youngest player on your team.
Max deliberately ignored you: “She wishes.”
Before you could reply, you were almost knocked off balance by someone jumping on your back and wrapping their hands around your shoulders.
“She’s still our baby!”, Rileys voice shouted right next to your ear.
You shook the redheaded midfielder off: “Ugh, stop it. I’m not.”
“Yeah, you are.”, Max countered smugly.
“At least I’m faster than you!”, you grinned and increased your pace, switching from a fast jog into a sprint.
The goalkeepers jaw dropped: “Without stretching! If we’d do that, we could go home right now.”
“Honestly, some things you can only do when you’re young.”, Ava shook her head.
Riley laughed: “My knees hurt from only watching her.”
“You sound like Lucy Bronze, Riley.”, you chuckled, remembering the phone call you had with Grace when she was away with the lionesses in Spain. Your girlfriend was happy about the fact that the English defender put her under her wings.
Even though the knee of the Barcelona player was hurting after she ran against Grace in training the older woman was still joking around with her like the pain was nothing.
Dropping the name of the famous lionesses Riley’s mouth dropped wide open: “Excuse me?!”
“Yeah, it’s true but Luce wouldn’t just sat by and chat when she has to warm up.”, Khiara joined the conversation with a teasing smile on her lips.
Your teammate pouted, begging not all too serious: “Never ever bring your girlfriend and her friends again.”
“Riley, you got compared to Lucy Bronze that’s a compliment., you tried to cheer the older woman up before you turned around to kiss your girlfriend who was standing next to the Mancity goalkeeper, hi babe, glad you could make it.”
You were willing to ignore Celins fake gagging noises unlike Grace. She scolded the Norwegian for her reaction:” Celin!”
“Ignore her, Grace. Have fun watching the game, girls.”, you told her softly.
“We’ll.”
“Good luck.”, Khiara shouted after you, widely grinning.
Grateful for her support you mouthed: “Thank you, Khi.”
“You’re welcome.”, she replied.
During the match, Celin bit her lip, looking worried at what was happening in front of them:” Oh god, their team is bad.”
“Don’t be mean.”, Grace immediately defended you and your team.
With a mischievous grin Khiara reminded the Tottenham players:” You guys were bad too when we won against you 7:0.”
“You said you wouldn’t remind us anymore.”, your girlfriend whined.
The mancity goalkeeper countered: “At least it stopped Celin from being mean.”
“Grace, your girl scored!”, Celin excitedly interrupted them.
Proudly Grace said:” Not too bad, right?”
“It was a really nice goal.”, Charli admitted.
When Max celebrated your goal with you, she pulled you close to hum into your ear:” Little one tell your girlfriend she needs to come more often if her presence makes you score such bangers.”
“Oh, but you know she’s a busy girl.”, you answered grinning.
Confidently she shook her head:” Doesn’t matter. We need some wins.”
After the match, Ava announced to your girlfriend:” Grace, we need you to attend more games it works wonders on y/n’s performance.”
“I’ll try to come more often. But my weekends are pretty booked.”, Grace promised.
In a reassuring tone you responded:” You don’t have too.”
“No, I want to come more often. I really enjoyed watching.”, your girlfriend looked at you lovingly.
“To be fair I enjoy watching you play too.”, you confessed sweetly.
She smirked while suggesting:” I think we could make a deal out of it.”
“Yes, we’ll try to see each other’s games as often as we can.”, you nodded eagerly.
The promise was sealed with a kiss from her on your lips:” That sounds fair.”
Two weeks later, the roles were reversed and you watched Grace and her team play against Manchester City in the FA Women’s Cup.
It was a suspenseful game that eventually went into a penalty shootout. You held your breath as Amy Turner converted the final penalty for Tottenham. You could not hide your joy for your girlfriends team while you watched them run towards each other and celebrate their win.
“Becky, you were amazing!“, Grace yelled at their goalkeeper who was able to save two of Manchester penalties.
Beth England pulled her two teammates into a hug: “I’m so proud of you, girls!“
“You really saved us with your goal in the last minute of stoppage time!“, Grace yelled happily at the striker. Her cheeks were still red from the game as her gaze drifted over the crowd of people applauding the win.
Beth shrugged with one shoulder: “They had to make a mistake at some point. She’s over there by the way if you’re looking for her.“
A new bright red flashed across Graces face: “Yes, I was searching for her.“
“Come on. Go to her, get your winners kiss and then we can celebrate together.“, Becky laughed and pushed the younger player in your direction.
Beth called after her: “Hurry up!“
“Trust me, I’m running as fast as I can.“, Grace laughed back at her as she made her way across the pitch.
She stopped right in front of you, a huge grin on her face.
“Hi, love. I’m so proud of you and your team.“, you greeted her and pulled her into a tight hug.
“Thanks. I’m glad you could be here.“, she replied.
As you pulled out of the hug, you held up your phone and presented your girlfriend your text messages: “Ava, Max and the whole team congratulate you and forgive me for missing training today.“
“That’s so sweet of them.“, Grace smiled, visibly moved by the thoughtfulness of your football team.
You nodded: “Yes, they are the best.“
“They are.“
“Go and celebrate with your team, babe, you deserve it.“, you laughed and gave her gentle push.
Grace held out her hand for you: “Join us.“
“Are you sure?“
“Absolutely.“
“Okay, I’m coming with you.“, you finally agreed and followed your girlfriend onto the grass.
Grace carefully took your hand in hers: “Good. The girls will be happy to see you.“
As soon as you reached the celebrating football players, you smiled: “Hi, girls.“
Charli beamed at you: “You’re here!“
“Gracies' lucky charm!“, Celin yelled with a slight tease in her voice.
“So that’s why we won.“, Charli concluded with a grin.
Grace pressed a kiss to your cheek: “Oh yes.“
Celin shot her a sceptical look: “Sure. It was probably her.“
Grace turned towards you, searching for your eyes: “Ignore the sceptic Celin. Love you, y/n.“
“I love you too.“, you replied and kissed her passionately.

What a joke
Travis Kelce x Reader
prompt 88 “you? beat me? What a joke” requested by @sorryidonttreatulikeagoddess hope you like it!
Tumblr media
“Oh come on!” Travis shouted, throwing his hands in the air while you smiled in victory.
It was date night every week you would both turn off the phones and spend time together and this week it was pizza a chess, while it doesn’t happen often this is when you’re reminded how sore of a loser he is, and you loved it.
“It was one game don't get cocky.” He grumbled seeing your facial expression
“It was five games actually baby, but dont worry you’re still the checkers master.” You giggled picking up the plates to take them to the kitchen Travis following not far behind.
“Listen sweetie I’ll let you have this win but just remember I’ll win any other game.” You could feel his smug smile even before you turned around. Matching his position you leaned back against the counter and folded your arms.
“Any game you say?” You prodded, knowing it would draw him in, doing exactly that he stepped forward pinning you with his arms caging you against the counter, leaning in to whisper in your ear. “Any game.”
“Even football?” His laugh echoed through the kitchen. “You? Beat me, at football? What a joke”
You waited for him to sober up before continuing with the idea in your head. Travis straightened little laughs escaping his lips. “I’m serious put your team together and I’ll pick mine, we can make a whole thing of it and donate to a charity of the winning teams choosing.”
You had his full attention as you spoke of course you would turn a competition into a good thing and he loved you a little more for it. He thought it over but you knew by the smile on his face he was in.
“Better get your team together because it’s on.” He held his and out to shake but the second your palm touched his, he pulled you into his chest. “May the best team win.” He whispered against you lips before pulling away and immediately going for his phone no doubt calling Pat, good thing you had your own phone calls to make.
You waited until you heard the shower turn on before your struck. Running as quietly as possible into Travis’s office, grabbing his headphones Jasons face popped back up on screen.
“Heyyy Y/N hows it going.” He boasted you’re glad you were wearing headphones or Travis definitely would’ve heard.
“Hi it’s good soooo I’m assuming you’ve heard about the game between Travis and i?” You asked pleading tone seeing him shake his head “Sorry i already told Trav i would play for him.”
“Oh come on.” You begged before a lighbulb went off. “What do you like more, supporting your brother or beating him?”
You watched as it sunk in your fingers tapping anxiously on the desk as you waited.
“So I have some ideas for our jerseys.” And just like that you had a center.
After months of planing the day has come you were decked out in the shiny gold Jersey Jason wanted standing across from Travis and Patrick on the field.
“The time has come baby you can back out now” Travis sang, ever for the dramatic he announced every member of his team as if it was a UFC match. Which to no surprise to you included most of the chiefs players.
“I think you’ll change your tune after you meet my team.” You smiled, taking the microphone from the announcer.
Thank you for everyone coming out to support a good cause and to watch Travis lose against my team today,” you paused looking to the stands as people cheered.
For our center may i introduce… Jason Kelce!!” He ran out of the tunnel to stand next to you while Travis dropped his jaw. “You said you had an interview with ESPN today!” Travis yelled pointing.
Jason shrugged “I probably will after this.”
“My own brother that’s cold” you smirked at his words moving on to the next players
“And next up on defense we have all the way from Miami, Jaelan Phillips! And the cheetah!” (Go watch hard knocks episode 2 trust me)
“And the man who broke the internet with his skims campaign…NICK BOSA!!” Travis rolled his eyes knowing the small crush you had on Bosa before you got together.
“Now for the quarterback. I know we needed something big and might i say i think we delivered.” You paused for dramatic effect, you saw Travis glance at Pat to make sure he wasn’t pulling a switch like his brother.
“The only man to have beaten Patrick Mahomes in the playoffs..Joe Burrow!!” The Crowd erupted as he came running out coming to stand on your other side. you met eyes with Travis “You can back out now baby” pulling his words back on him handing the mic back to the announcer to do his thing while you left your team to run to the sidelines with Kylie. “Now this will be a good game.” She spoke actually wearing the golden jersey which surprised you since she only wears eagles gear but as she said it wasn’t a real team so it doesn’t count.
“Let’s just hope they win.”
(I do not know enough about football to write the game but I’m learning)
Later that night you and Travis found yourselves back on the couch large trophy sitting on the coffee table. “You, beat me at football what a joke.” You repeated in a comically deep voice while giggling.
“Yeah yeah next week we’re playing checkers.” He pouted with his arms crossed gearing at your trophy. “If you promise not to throw a chair this time sure” You joke ending with a yelp as he lunges at you.

force of habit ♡₊˚•.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
pairing: joão félix x reader (established relationship) summary: joão has a nervous habit that comes out before games, but you're just the thing to calm his nerves warnings: none!, pure fluff w/c: 1.1k (did someone say over-writing?)
a/n: aaa first ever writing post !! wrote this because i noticed joão has a tendency to bite at his nails in a lot of clips (and also just because i never ever ever stop thinking about his hands. like ever) hope you guys like it !! <3
Tumblr media
“João.” your voice was soft, but stern as you watched your boyfriend catch your eye in confusion.
It wasn’t an uncommon occurrence at this point, and you’d be lying if you said it didn’t make you feel like a total hypocrite. You had an abundance of bad habits yourself. You picked at your skin when you were stressed, struggled with waking up early and could never seem to get out of leaving things until the absolute last minute.
And somehow, being a pro football player didn’t stop your boyfriend from falling into the same trap. He got frustrated easily, would always forget to pick up after himself, and constantly ate your leftovers in the fridge no matter how often you told him not to. But one habit seemed to bother you the most: the way he would bite his nails.
It wasn’t the act itself that bothered you really, lord knows your habits were far more irritating. Rather it was what it signified to you - that he was worried about something, bothered or annoyed at the situation at hand - that riled you up so much. And the fact he never seemed to notice he was doing it only made it worse.
At first, when you two had first met and still fell into being smitten with one another, you hadn’t minded it. Mostly because you’d hardly noticed it, only noticing him do it occasionally. But it was only once you started dating, and seeing each other far more often, that its seriousness became apparent.
You could give him a thousand reasons why he should stop doing it, but you knew he would hardly care, and if he did it wouldn’t be easy for him to stop doing something that seemed like second nature, which was why you made it your mission to help him.
Or try to.
Which was what you were doing - the two of you standing across from each other in the narrow corridor leading to the locker room. The time until his next game ticked away slowly but you had yet to break your tradition of spending time together beforehand - João always insisting you were his ‘good luck charm’, as cheesy as it sounded.
His eyes caught yours at the sound of his name, blinking cluelessly at first. Slowly though, he caught on, retreating his hands from his mouth and mumbling a quick “sorry” as he did. You sighed.
“It’s alright, you’re that nervous for this match, hm?” you said, stepping a little closer and pocketing the phone you were holding so that you could take both his hands in yours. He nodded, breath hitching in his throat at your sudden closeness. Even though you were a couple now (officially, hard launched, announced to the public, however, you wanted to put it), he was yet to get used to your boldness when it came to things like physical affection.
“I’ve got to prove myself today, you know?” His hands trembled slightly as you interlaced your fingers with his, giving them a soft squeeze in an attempt to steady them.
“Don’t worry, you’ll do good as always.” You ran your thumb across the back of his hand, turning it around to get a look at his fingernails, “And remind me to file your nails when we get home.” you added, half-jokingly, half-seriously.
He only laughed in response, but it was a weak one that signified the remnants of some last-minute nerves. His neck whipped around as he looked up and down the hallway, legs bouncing as he did, relentlessly. You were somewhat used to watching him like this, to the point you had come to find it endearing how he tried to convince everyone around him, and even himself, that he was fine - even if everything else made it obvious he wasn’t. Not like he was ever in the wrong in doing so though, as you watched the clock on the wall tick over to just less than half an hour before the match. You know being nervous only made him play worse, so you knew you’d have to come up with some way to calm him down, and do so fast.
“You uhm-” you hesitated for a second before letting it out like a sight, “You look really good in your kit.”
This seemed to catch him off guard, shown by his widened eyes and the soft blush spreading across his cheeks. He leant in a little closer, towering over you upon hearing it as if daring you to say it again. Slowly, a smirk braced his face, his hands now the ones gripping yours.
“You really think so?” He was irritating when he was like this, all cocky and suave, but it was an irritating you couldn’t ever seem to get enough of.
“Yes, though if you ask again I might just change my mind,” you muttered, avoiding his keen eye knowing it would be difficult to let him go to his game if you did. You only turned to look down the hallway, trying your best to conceal a smirk. He let out a low chuckle at this, before craning his neck around to get a look at the clock.
“I should probably go,” he said, but he kept his hands firmly gripped on theirs, still shaking slightly.
“You’ll do well, don’t stress.” you assured him, smiling, “I’ll meet you after the game okay?”
He nodded definitively, “Kiss for good luck?” he added, barely above a whisper. Thought with his eyebrows raised, brown eyes so pleading, and the feeling of his hands on yours, it was impossible for you not to give in.
Tiptoeing to close the gap between you two, you pressed your lips to his. Almost immediately you felt his hands weave out of your grip and come up to cup your face gently, pulling you in as if silently asking for more. And it took every ounce of strength not to give in to him right there and then.
“João! Either get a room or come on!”
It seemed like you didn’t have to. You cursed Gavi silently under your breath as you reluctantly broke away from the kiss.
“We’ll finish this once the games are over if I win.” He said in a rushed whisper, hands moving to catch a strand of your hair which he twirled around his finger mindlessly.
“Mhm, once you win,” you corrected him, smile teasing as ever. You were about to turn to head back to your seat, front row, of course, João couldn’t have it any other way, before you spun around once more. Grabbing your boyfriend’s much larger hands in yours you pressed a soft kiss to his knuckle, catching him off guard for the second time that night.
“Play good, for me okay?” you mumbled against the skin of his hand.
“Of course, always,” he assured, pulling you in to leave one last kiss on your forehead before jogging off towards the locker room.
Although, not before turning around to get one last look at his favourite ‘good luck charm’, completely unaware that the tremble in his hands had gone completely.

First Impressions (Alexia Putellas x reader)
Tumblr media
A/N: Chapter 1 of the Legacy Series.
For most people the wave of Spanish air they feel when they step off the plane is warm and welcoming but for you it feels like thick smoke and every breathe you take makes it harder to breathe. The last time you came to Barcelona lead to the worse day of your life and since then the place your parents called home was nothing than a reminder of what you have lost. It is because of this that you hadn’t stepped foot in Catalonian city since.
Upon entering arrivals you are met with your driver holding a board with only your first name on it.
“Miss Y/N” the driver extended his hand.
“Just the one name, I feel like Adele” you joked.
The drive only took thirty minutes which you found impressive considering it was game day for a women’s football team of Barcelona. You looked anywhere but outside the window as you pulled up to the stadium. You could hear the fans before you opened the door, the sound and sight of them made you overwhelmed.
“Here, I thought you might want this” the man in the driver’s seat passes you a cap “your mother said you would forget to bring one”
You hated being predictable, you much preferred to keep people on their toes but in that moment you are grateful that your mother knew you so well.
“Do you want me to do a lap of the car park?”
“No, I just need a minute”
It’s just a football game. You’re here a fan, it doesn’t have to be anything more.
Following the signs to the family section you are sure to dip your head as people pass by. Sure it would have been easier to get private seats but then you would have to had let the club know you were coming and no way could you have gotten away without having a meeting with them, especially with the news your manager had given them a couple of weeks ago.
Once in your seat you notice a girl sitting next to you, she looked weirdly familiar but you know that you had never met her before. It is only when you watch the player’s come out for their warm ups to put 2 and 2 together. The girl had a striking resemblance to the player whose name was on the back of most fan’s shirts.
“Hola” The girl next to you says “I haven’t seen you at a game before. Are you here supporting a family member?”
“Hi. No, I’m not. I’m a friend of Lieke Martens
“Are you a Barcelona fan?”
You could tell the girl was being polite but you just wanted to watch the game. You didn’t want anyone to know you were in the city and the more you talk to her, the more likely she is to recognise you.
“They’re a family team”
“You’re from here?” The brunette wouldn’t have guessed. You’re dutch accent wasn’t overly strong but you definitely didn’t have a Spanish tone.
“The Netherlands”
“You’re Dutch. That makes sense if you know Lieke”
Ok so she didn’t recognise you, maybe she didn’t watch any football games other than her sisters.
“I’m Alba. Alexia’s sister”
“Y/N. It’s a pleasure to meet you Alba”
“Just Y/N”
You only hum in response. She may not know you’re a football player but there’s no way she wouldn’t know your last name.
The younger Putellas lets you watch the game in peace. It is only when you react badly to one of the ref’s calls does she begin to pay attention to what you are saying and the way you are saying it. You hear her say your name followed by a tap on the shoulder but when you turn to face her you see that she is joined by an older woman. The way the look in her eyes changes let you know that she knows more about football than her youngest daughter does.
“Is this your first time here?” To anyone else it might be a weird first question to ask. Not what is your name, not how are you.
You can feel your palms get sweaty as a lump forms in your throat, one that you are quickly to swallow. When words fail you, you can only nod in response.
“Mama, this is Y/N. She is a friend of Lieke’s”
“A friend of Lieke’s” it’s the way the woman phrases her sentence that makes you feel a little bit guilty.
You shrug your shoulders slightly, a small smirk tugs at your lips.
“That’s what I said. She does know a lot about football though, she acts like Ale does when she watches a game at home”
You can tell that Eli want’s to say ‘that’s because she is considered football royalty’ but she bites her tongue.
The rest of the game goes in favour of the home side with them going on to win 5-1. A result which doesn’t come as a shock to anyone, yourself included but you don’t hang around for the final whistle. When the 4 minutes injury time gets announced you figure it the perfect time to make your exit.
“You’re leaving?” Alba says at you stand up.
“It’s easier to beat traffic this way. It really was nice to meet you Alba and—“
“Mama you never introduced yourself. This is Eli. Mama this is—“
“I know who she is” her words earn a look from both you and Alba although both for a different reason “Will we be seeing you back here soon?”
The older woman wasn’t stupid.
“I’m not sure” it was an honest answer. You has a decision to make this summer, one which could lead to you to calling the city your father loved home just as he once did.
“Well I hope I do and I know Alexia does too”
“Mama she hasn’t met Alexia”
You can see that Alba has questions but you couldn’t stay to answer them, you wasn’t ready yet.
Once again you say your goodbyes but just as you leave to turn back.
“If you happen to see Lieke tell her I’ll meet her at 9”
“I will” Eli says.
Alba looks back and forth between you and her mother wondering what she is missing.
The two of them wait in the car park for Alexia to come out and sure enough the dutch woman is by her side. What you wasn’t aware of is that you had been recognised by the team as the walked back into the locker room at halftime. They had heard the rumours but up until this moment that’s all they had been. Now though they wondered what the true nature of your visit was and if it meant something big was coming.
“So it was Y/N in stands with Alba?” Alexia asks Lieke.
“Alexia” the dutch woman warned her “She came here as a friend nothing more”
“But it could be more. You’ve heard what they’re saying”
They approach their cars which are parked next to each other. The captain hugs her mother and sister, both of them congratulating her on a good game and an excellent season as this was the last game.
“Lieke, Y/N asked me to tell you she’ll meet you at 9” as promised Eli passes on your message.
“She’s staying in the city but she hasn’t been back si—“
“She is leaving tonight but we are going for dinner. I’ll text you the address ss and if you happen to be close then I’ll introduce you”
“Vale”
“Alexia” Lieke turns to her captain “don’t bring up the rumours. As you said it’s been a while since she’s been here and she doesn’t want to talk about football”
You and Lieke have known each other for years as joining the senior Netherlands team at the same time. She knew that her captain was a big fan of yours and the prospect of you joining Barcelona was very exciting but you were very private and she could only hope her friend would respect that.
She would find out a couple of hours later that once Alexia has something on her mind then she had to voice her opinion no matter how many times she was warned otherwise. It is why when she arrived at the restaurant with a couple of the girls, albeit half an hour later than she was told, Alexia eyes search for you the moment she walks through the door but settles when she sees Lieke knowing that you won’t be far away.
Lieke watches as Alexia fidgets in her seat and cannot help it as small chuckle escapes her lips. Her captain was nervous and you weren’t even in eyesight.
“Not that I don’t like your company but where’s Y/N?” Alexia asks your national team mate.
“First of all you’re late Y/N is settling the bill although according to her she went to the bathroom”
“You said 9”
“and it’s 9:30. The Spanish may have a habit of being late but the Dutch are punctual”
Alexia turns around as she hears your voice get closer and closer. When you take a seat opposite her she is a loss for words.
“This a such a coincidence” you turn your attention to Lieke who you can tell feels a little bit guilty.
“Yours definitely wasn’t a face I expected to see in the stands today”
It was small talk and you hated small talk especially now because you could tell what it was leading up to.
“What can I say, I have a few days off so I thought I would come see Lieke before I fly to England”
“England?” Lieke asks. As far as she was aware you were flying back to Amsterdam.
“Viv invited me to an arsenal game”
“So you’re checking out potential teams”
There is was and it took less than ten minutes. You gave Lieke a look and in turn she mouthed an apology. She truly believed that Alexia would at least wait a bit before bringing it up.
Your move, your future, anything than included you moving away from home made you anxious and even though you had met these girls on the pitch you didn’t know them off it and this wasn’t a topic you discussed with strangers. It also didn’t help that Joan Laporta had been pestering you for the past couple of weeks and hearing Alexia try to pry you for information made you feel like they were in on it together.
“I’m visiting friends Alexia and I don’t talk business with people I don’t know”
Your response changed the energy at the table but still Alexia’s eyes never left you.
“C’mon Y/N, playing for Barcelona is your birth right. You belong here and the team would be lucky to have you. Imagine the fans, how happy they would be to wear a Barcelona shirt with —“
“Alexia, can’t you see you’re making her feel uncomfortable” Aitana whispers to her captain.
The young Catalonian was the only one at the table apart from Lieke that you would consider a friend. She has worked with the foundation for years, even coming to Amsterdam to do a few workshops there. In this time she never asked you about your father and you would never be able to thank her enough for that.
“Aitana it’s fine. She’s like most people I meet, she just wants me for my last name”
It was a sentence you said with a heavy heart and although you tried to play it off, everyone could hear the waver in your tone.
“Y/N I—“ Alexia instantly regrets what she has said.
“Listen Alexia, I like you up and until now you haven’t given me a reason not to. When Lieke first joined Barcelona she was nervous but she told me you welcomed her into the club and made her feel at home so I know you’re a good person. I don’t want to argue with you so let’s start fresh”
The brunette thanks the higher powers that she hasn’t put an end to this friendship before it even had the chance to begin.
“Start fresh, ok. I’m Alexia Putellas”
The table sniffles back laughter at the formality of their captain.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you. I’m Y/N Cruyff”

“Told you, I have connections.”
Joel rolled his eyes and took a sip of his coffee, watching as the kids on the soccer field changed directions.
“Still feel like business school is overkill,” he said, putting the travel mug in the cupholder of his folding chair. “Especially at this point… GET ‘EM BABY GIRL!”
Sarah stole the ball from a girl on the other team and dodged another girl before starting to charge up field, a serious look on her face.
“GO SARAH!” You jumped up and screamed, cupping your hands around your mouth. Sarah got pinned down and looked around before passing the ball, sending the it between two defenders to another player. Her teammate got the ball and sent it careening toward the goal before the other team could change direction. It sailed in and Joel leapt to his feet, the two of you jumping and clapping. “HECK YEAH!”
Sarah beamed at the two of you before she went to hug the girl who scored. You and Joel sat back down as play started back up. The coffee had spilled some in his excitement, the fabric arm of the chair wet.
“Now is the time to do the business school thing,” you said as you leaned forward on your thighs, watching the game intently, your hands clasped together and tucked between your knees. “And besides, it’s not actual business school. It’s… business school light. Enough to help you draw up a business plan and that kind of shi…stuff. The kind of stuff that you’ll need if you need to take out money from the bank to get started.”
Joel sighed. He knew you were right, he just wasn’t crazy about the idea.
After you’d had dinner - and nearly devolved into an argument that, in hindsight, Joel really was not ready to have no matter how hard he was pushing for it - the two of you had gone back and forth about what to do next.
Your call shouldn’t have surprised him. You’d always been an academic sort of person, the fact that you’d gotten into some fancy college had come as no surprise to Joel. Of course your first idea involved formal education.
You reached out to a friend of a friend at the business school and got some of his recorded lectures from the era of virtual classes during COVID. He was happy to share them once you explained it, compiling some lectures, notes and guides for Joel to use.
Joel felt bad about putting some stranger out like that but you said he was happy to do it in exchange for an autographed copy of your book.
“I know, it’s crazy,” you’d teased when he looked at you in disbelief. “Should have let me draw on your face that one time, think of how valuable it’d be now…”
Joel just snorted and shook his head.
“Get in there!”
You were on your feet again, watching as Sarah tackled the ball away from another girl. You screamed and jumped when she succeeded and Sarah smiled as she clambered back to her feet.
“Good job, kiddo!” Joel called, still seated but smiling. You got really into Sarah’s games, Joel had quickly learned. He wasn’t about to admit it to you, but he loved it. It reminded him of when you were both in high school, when you’d watch from the front row of the stands during football games, screaming so loud that he could hear you over everyone else at the game. You drew his number on your cheek and bleached it onto a t-shirt. You’d even made Tommy a matching one, something the 10-year-old had taken as a profession of undying love and devotion back then.
The next time you were at the house after giving him the shirt, Tommy sauntered through the kitchen where you and Joel were having a snack, topless, drenched in cologne and hair slicked back. Joel watched you try not to laugh as Tommy leaned on the table in front of you, giving you a cocky smile.
“Hey Goldie,” he said, his voice artificially deep. Joel choked on his Coke and covered it with a cough. “Didn’t expect to see you here.”
“Really?” You asked, brows raised. “Even though I’m here every Saturday afternoon?”
His smile faltered.
“Well… uh…” his eyes darted to Joel, like he was looking for help. Joel just held up his hands. “Just… didn’t expect you to be here looking so good.”
“Oh,” Joel could see the edges of your lips pulling up. “So I don’t normally look good? Darn…”
“No, wait…” he stood up from the table, eyes darting to Joel again. “I don’t… you…”
“Don’t you have a matchbox car to crash or something?” Joel asked. “Stop tryin’ to pick up my girl, little man.”
“Fuck off,” Tommy muttered before stomping back off toward his room.
“I’ll tell mom you said that,” Joel leaned forward and watched his little brother go.
“So I’m your girl now?” You teased once he was out of ear shot. “News to me. And be nice to him, he’s just a kid and he’s a sweetheart.”
“He thinks he’s Don Juanito is what he is,” Joel muttered, sitting back in his seat and taking a sip of his Coke. “You being my girl might be the only way he leaves you alone.”
You rolled your eyes but smiled a little anyway.
“All this trouble because I wanted to support my best friend as he fucked up in the red zone…”
“I’ll tell my mom on your language, too,” he said. “Don’t think she won’t smack you upside your head just because she didn’t birth you. You’re her favorite kid, but don’t push it.”
Tommy had, thankfully, gotten over his crush on you. A fact that Joel was endlessly thankful for now that his part in helping you complete your list included finding you a fucking date.
There was a guy on his team at work he thought would at least be something besides a total waste of time. Blake was a decent man, one of the few on the site who didn’t say disgusting shit about women the second they believed they were among other assholes who thought the same way. Joel had caught him reading once on his lunch break, something that he was sure would be important to you. You’d want someone who read. Joel should read more.
Blake, Joel thought, would be a decent enough guy to set you up with. Not good enough for you - no one was good enough for you - but at least a damn improvement over fucking Brad.
He just hoped it wouldn’t stick.
Not that he wanted you to be alone. He didn’t. He wanted you to be happy. More than almost anything else he wanted you to be happy. He wanted you to have whatever it took to make that happen. But he wasn’t sure how he’d get past working with someone he knew got to kiss you, touch you, fuck you. He’d hear about dates with you and things you enjoyed with a boyfriend and not just your friend. He’d have to hear all about what someone else was doing for you because he couldn’t.
Which was fine. Should be fine. You were his friend, you’d always been his friend. He could love you as a friend, he did love you as a friend, he could get past the other shit. He could.
And if Blake ever decided to try to talk about you the way some of the other assholes they worked with talked about their girlfriends then, well, at least Joel could fucking deck him for it.
“She’s killing it out there,” you settled back into your folding chair and glanced over at Joel.
“She always does,” Joel nodded. “She’s got skills, that girl.”
“She seems to really like it, too,” you said, eyes back on Sarah. “Which is the important thing. If she’s good enough, she could get scholarships and shit. But that really only matters if she also likes it, there’s no use in her being miserable because of the demands of being a student athlete because she happens to be good a sport she doesn’t enjoy…”
“She loves it,” Joel said. “And, honestly, I’m hopin’ that sticks and that she can get a scholarship, lord knows I can’t afford to shell out for college…”
“You can’t now,” you corrected him good naturedly. “But once you become Joel Miller: Entrepreneur and man about town, that’s another story.”
Joel scoffed.
“What?” You asked.
“You’ve just got a lot more faith in me than I do.”
“Aren’t I supposed to?” You asked, looking at him again. “You’re my person so that’s part of my my job. Recognizing your potential.”
“See, just the fact that you think I have potential to recognize…”
“Oh shut up,” you swatted his arm and he laughed a little, watching you watch his daughter run back up the field.
No, Blake didn’t deserve you. No one did. Least of all Joel.
Sarah’s team won the game and she was beaming when she ran over to you and Joel after the post-game huddle.
“Did you see that one steal I did?” She asked, leaning between the front seats of the truck. “It was so cool, I almost missed it but then I got it to Sophie and she was able to score and it was so COOL!”
“Seatbelt,” Joel said. Sarah rolled her eyes but flopped back into her seat and buckled up, anyway. “Thank you. And yes, we saw, Baby Girl! You kicked ass out there.”
“Can ass kickers pick lunch?” She asked.
“Ass kickers can pick lunch,” Joel said. “But ass kickers can’t say ass until they’re at least 13, sorry kiddo.”
“Aw man,” she huffed but then smiled. “I’m gonna swear so much on my 13th birthday…”
“Yeah I bet you are,” he shook is head and caught you trying not to laugh out of the corner of his eye. “Alright, kiddo, where for lunch?”
Joel watched her in the rearview mirror, a serious look on her face as she considered her options.
“Dairy Queen,” she said eventually, nodding seriously. “Because then I can get a Blizzard.”
“Whatever the ass kicker demands,” Joel said.
Sarah ordered a burger with her blizzard before going to find a table. Joel got the steak fingers and a shake and you just stood there, staring up at the menu board with a slight frown on your face.
“What?” Joel asked. “C’mon, it’s a limited menu, can’t be that hard.”
“It’s just been forever since I’ve been to a DQ,” you said absently. “Not sure what to really get…”
“Goldie,” he said, voice serious. You looked at him, frowning. “We both know what you get at Dairy Queen.”
“Yeah, when I was a teenager,” you looked back up at the menu. “Little different now…”
“Not gonna find a salad up there,” he said.
“Yeah, but…”
“Remember how the number one thing on your list was finalize your divorce?” He asked. You looked at him again, brows raised. “Well, this is one part of that you can control. You can ditch all the stupid shit that asshole put in your head, starting with the idea that you can’t get chicken fingers every once in a while.”
He didn’t give you a chance to reply, instead looking to the cashier.
“She’ll do the chicken fingers basket,” Joel said. “With fries. And a medium Reese’s Blizzard.”
“Small,” you corrected him.
“Medium,” he said, looking over at you. “Because we both know I want to eat half of it.”
You laughed a little.
“Medium,” you said.
“Alright,” he said, going to pay.
When the food came out, he took one of your chicken fingers and your eyes went wide.
“Hey!”
“Oh sit tight,” he rolled his eyes and dropped one of his steak fingers in your basket.
“What makes you think I want one of your steak fingers?” You asked, incredulous.
“You always want one of my steak fingers,” he said. “Every time.”
You glared at him for a second.
“Shut up.”
Joel laughed before dropping an onion ring in your basket and swiping a few fries.
“So you guys really hung out all the time before, huh?” Sarah said, eating a fry and watching the two of you from across the table.
“We did,” you smiled at Joel before looking back at Sarah. “We basically lived together, probably drove our moms crazy…”
“Your mom, maybe,” Joel teased. “Mine loved havin’ you around all the time. Said you were a good influence.”
“Because I was,” you teased back.
“So,” Sarah watched you both closely. “Why didn’t I meet you until now? I mean, I met other friends of my dad’s. Did you guys have a fight or something?”
The two of you looked at each other for a second. How the fuck was Joel supposed to explain this to his kid? Yeah, we were friends, and then the two of us decided to have sex and then just stop talking for a decade and a half? Not quite age appropriate.
“Well,” you said, dipping one of your fries in your Blizzard before popping it in your mouth.
“You’re so gross,” Joel said and you rolled your eyes and elbowed him in the side.
“Shove it,” you smiled a little and looked back to Sarah. “We finished high school and I had to move for college and we just kind of stopped talking quite as much, we didn’t do a great job of keeping in touch. We were busy, it just kind of happens when you’re a grown up.”
Sarah crinkled her nose.
“That’s dumb,” she said.
“You’re right,” you smiled a little, looking at Joel. “But adults do dumb things sometimes.”
Sarah nodded slowly, taking a fry and dipping it in her Oreo Blizzard before taking a hesitant bite and chewing thoughtfully. She frowned for a moment before her eyes lit up and she dipped the fry again.
Joel groaned.
“Not you, too…”
“Just gotta get on the French fries in ice cream train, Miller,” you smiled smugly. “Sweet, savory? It’s the best.”
“She’s right, Dad,” Sarah said, dipping another fry. “This is better than ketchup.”
“I’m surrounded by weirdos,” Joel muttered but he couldn’t help smiling a little to himself, watching you and his daughter together, a strange pull at the base of his chest at the sight. This, he thought, was how it was supposed to be. You were meant to be with the two of them, it was obvious. It was almost strange, how clearly he fit with you. He hadn’t felt like there was something distinctly missing over the last decade. He’d gone about his life, raising his daughter, trying to get ahead at work. He bought a house, kept his brother’s nose clean, buried his mother. There had been no distinct sense of absence. He thought of you often - every day, really - and it hurt but it was a dulled pain, a longing for what he had before. He hadn’t known what he’d really been missing, the way things would be with you at the stage of life you were both in now.
But now that he had you here, he wondered how he hadn’t noticed this gaping hole at the center of his reality before. There would be no excising you from him now, it wouldn’t work, the ragged edges of your absence would be too clear in everything he did.
He’d just have to do whatever it took to keep you in his life. Even if that meant setting you up with some guy from work.
“So Sarah,” you said, ripping your chicken finger in half and reaching over to dip it in the gravy in Joel’s basket.
“Hey!”
You ignored him.
“Do you think you can do me a favor?” You continued, eating the chicken tender.
“Sure,” she shrugged. “What do you need?”
“Well,” you said, brushing your hands free of crumbs before taking a sip of your drink. “I was thinking about getting a cat but I have no idea how to pick a cat. Do you think you could come with me to the shelter and help me look? Just make sure I’m finding the right one?”
Her eyes lit up and she looked at Joel.
“Can I Dad?” She begged. “Please? I love cats, they’re so cute, and…”
Joel laughed, draping his arm over the bench behind you. You’d already talked with him about this, seeing if Sarah wanted to go to the animal shelter this afternoon. He knew she’d love it.
“Well,” he sighed, pretending to consider it. “If you promise to behave this week…”
“I will!”
“And do all your homework the first time I ask,” he said.
“Deal!”
“Then alright,” he conceded. “We can go with Aunt Goldie to pick a cat.”
“Yes!” She punched the air in victory and Joel smiled and shook his head, settling back in the booth with his shake in his hand.
The three of you went back to Joel’s and gave Sarah a chance to get cleaned up before heading to the shelter to look at cats. Sarah took over the radio in the car and insisted on playing Taylor Swift and you learned the chorus to one of the songs she was belting in the back seat, singing along the last time through, windows rolled down, your hand tapping out the rhythm of the song on the outside of the door.
“So what kind of cat do you want?” Sarah asked, turning to face you and Joel as she walked backwards down the row of cages.
“I don’t really know,” you shrugged. “Never really had a pet. One that wants to sit on my lap and purr?”
“See what not having a pet as a kid does to you, Dad?” Sarah said, looking at Joel with wide eyes. “Leaves you totally unprepared for picking a pet later in life. I should get a cat, too, while we’re here.”
“No,” he said. “Watch where you’re walkin’.”
She rolled her eyes and sighed dramatically but obeyed, leading the way through the cages.
“Oh, look at this one!” She stopped in front of a cage and laced her fingers through the bars, a black and white cat on the other side of it watching her from the back corner. “She’s so pretty!”
Joel stood at your back as you paused, looking at the cat for a moment.
“She is pretty,” you said. “But I want to see all of them first before I see if there are any we want to really meet.”
Sarah stopped outside of a gray and white tabby’s cage, the cat rubbing its face over the bars.
“Aw!” She reached a finger out and brushed along its cheek. “She’s so cute! And she seems so sweet!”
“She does,” you agreed, reaching around Sarah to give the cat a haphazard pet.
“Dad!” Sarah looked back over her shoulder at him. “Her name is Swiftie! She’s perfect!”
“We’re not here for us, Baby Girl,” Joel said. “C’mon, more cats to see, don’t get attached.”
“Well we have to meet that one now,” you said, looking at Joel and very clearly trying not to smile. “It’s required.”
“It’s really not,” he replied. “God, you’re such a bad influence…”
“Nah,” you replied. “I’m just always right, you should get used to it.”
You found another cat you really wanted to meet, an orange striped one who stood on his hind legs in his cage and reached a paw through the bars while meowing loudly for attention.
“Alright, Baby Girl,” Joel sighed, hands in his pockets. “Why don’t you go find someone who works here, see if we can meet some of these guys…”
She squealed before running out to find someone, Joel watching her go before turning his attention back to you.
“You’re never gonna have another moment’s peace with that thing in your house,” he said, watching as you reached your fingers through the bars and scratched its head as it purred loudly, arching into your touch.
“That’s alright,” you smiled, watching the cat. “It’ll be nice to feel wanted for a change. Totally worth it.”
Joel just looked at you for a moment, an odd twinge in him. Maybe you were lonelier than he realized. Maybe things had been worse with your fucking ex than he’d known. Maybe you didn’t understand that he wanted you. In so many fucking ways, he wanted you.
He just had no idea how to say that to you, not without fucking up everything else.
“Hi there,” a woman with a name tag walked up, Sarah at her side, before Joel had a chance to say anything at all. “I hear you want to see some cats?”
You told her the ones you wanted to see and the woman led you to a small room with a bench and some cat toys before going to get the first cat.
Joel should really have known what was going to happen after that. The three of you settled on the floor, you and Joel sitting beside each other, backs against the cinderblock wall, letting cats climb over your legs and throwing little bell-filled balls for them to chase as Sarah pulled a feather on a string across the floor. You were already attached to the orange cat but Sarah was obviously in love with the gray one. Joel sighed, leaning his head back against the wall, watching as his daughter held the little cat on her lap, talking to it all soft and gentle.
“I really should’ve known better than to do this,” he muttered and you laughed a little, leaning your head on his shoulder and watching Sarah, too. “Jesus…”
“At least it’s a cat and not a dog,” you patted his thigh twice before letting your hand rest there near his knee. His heart beat faster. “Could be worse.”
“So,” the woman came back in, carefully closing the door before the cat on Sarah’s lap could escape. But it didn’t look like there was any risk of it, the little thing seemingly content to stay there for the rest of time. “What are we thinking?”
“Please, Dad?” Sarah looked at him, her eyes so wide. “I’ll do all the work, I promise. I’ll clean the litter box every day and I’ll feed her and play with her and…”
Joel sighed.
“You’d gotta actually do it, Baby Girl,” he said. “I mean it.”
“I will!” She said, holding the cat close. “I promise!”
He sighed again.
“Alright, we’ll take that one…”
“Fantastic,” the woman smiled. “I’ll start the paperwork…”
“Oh, and I’m going to get Garfield, the orange one,” you said as she turned to leave. “But I’ll be changing his name…”
“That’s great,” she said. “But we will have to check and make sure the cats are compatible before we send you home with two…”
“No,” you laughed. “No, sorry, no, we don’t live together. He’ll be coming with me and this one will be going with them.”
“Oh!” She laughed back. “I’m so sorry, I just thought you two were married. I’ll get started on the paperwork for both, I’ll be right back.”
Joel watched the woman go and glanced at Sarah to make sure she was still totally absorbed with the cat on her lap before lowering his voice.
“Could have denied that a little harder, I think…”
He practically heard you roll your eyes.
“What, did you want to see if we could save on adoption fees by filling out one set of paperwork?” You asked.
“Always said we’d make good roommates,” he replied. “Seems a good a reason as any.”
You scoffed.
“Yeah, sure,” you said.
“What?” He said, turning his head just enough to see you, still leaning against him. “I’m serious. You really tellin’ me that the idea of living with me is that terrifying?”
“The inevitable fallout is terrifying, yeah,” you said.
“Here we go,” the woman came back in with two clipboards and you lifted your head from Joel’s shoulder. “Once you fill this out and pay your deposit, we can run a few checks and you can come back in a few days for your new best friends!”
“Ah, the truth comes out,” Joel smirked a little as he started completing the paperwork. “You were looking to replace me the whole time…”
“Well clearly yes,” you said absently, working on your own documents. “Furry, loud, opinionated… You’re basically twins, why do I need you to keep coming over when I’ll have Puck?”
“Puck?” Joel frowned. “Like hockey puck?”
“Puck like the fairy from Midsummer,” you replied. Joel must have still looked confused because when you looked over at him, you rolled your eyes. “The mischievous one from Midsummer Night’s Dream? The Shakespeare play? I know you read it, we had to read it sophomore year…”
“C’mon Dad,” Sarah looked up from the cat in her lap. “Even I know that one.”
“Alright, well,” Joel said. “You two are the smartest people I know, not fair to judge me by that standard…”
Joel caught a glimpse of you smiling out of the corner of his eye as he finished the paperwork.
***
“I have a question for you.”
You opened your eyes to see Joel looking down to you, your head in his lap, his thumb brushing your temple in a soothing rhythm. It was late. Sarah had gone to bed hours before, worn out after her game and suckering her dad into adopting a cat and going to Target to pick out every toy under the sun for her new pet and yours. You were pretty sure you weren’t going home that night, too comfortable in your position against Joel.
“No,” you said, closing your eyes and settling into him and the couch again. “I can’t convince Sarah to give up the cat. My position as the cool aunt is too tenuous, I’m going to side exclusively with Sarah in all conflicts for the foreseeable future…”
“I could just refuse to pick it up in a few days,” Joel mused. “Tell her the shelter denied our application because of my history as a cold hearted killer with no mercy.”
“Ah yes,” you smiled a little. “I forgot, Joel Miller, heartless killing machine.”
“Cold hearted,” he corrected. “Get it right.”
“Oh, I’m so sorry…”
“But no,” he continued. “Not what I was going to ask.”
You opened one eye, looking up at him, trying not to think about how soft his eyes were.
“Shoot,” you said, closing your eye again.
“Was thinking about the lists…” he trailed off.
“That wasn’t a question, Miller,” you said after a moment.
“I’m gettin’ there, don’t rush me, woman.”
You opened your eyes just enough to see him over you. His hand slipped around to cup the crown of your head. He was so handsome. There should be rules about that, there should be rules about men who are that beautiful. They should need licensing or something, they shouldn’t just be allowed to freely exist, endangering women everywhere.
You closed your eyes again.
“Take your time, Miller,” you said. “Not going anywhere.”
“Anyway,” he said and you could hear his eye roll. His thumb stroked your hair. “Both our lists have relationship shit on ‘em…”
His voice trailed off and your heart beat a little faster.
“Yes?” You said when he didn’t continue.
“Well, you were sayin’ you didn’t know how to do the whole… app thing.”
“Right…”
“What if…” he took a deep breath. “We tried going out together. You bring someone for me, I bring someone for you…”
Your breath hitched. You couldn’t help it. You knew the kind of relationship you had with Joel, the kind of relationship you’d always had with Joel. He’d made it perfectly clear that anything beyond that was totally out of the question for him and you’d accepted that. It had taken a long time - and a failed marriage - but you accepted it.
That didn’t make the concept of picking out a girlfriend for him sting any less.
“Just… then you don’t have to fuck around on apps,” he said quickly when you didn’t reply. “And I don’t have to waste my time on someone who wouldn’t work in a million years because you’re doing my thinking for me…”
“Instead of your dick?” You asked, opening your eyes. He smiled a little. Goddammit, him and his fucking dimple.
“Exactly,” he said, cocking his head so it was more in line with yours. He looked a little uncertain, his eyes searching yours. “So… what do you think?”
“Well,” you sighed. “Makes as much sense as anything else, I suppose…. When were you thinking?”
“I did say we should move ‘get laid’ to the top of your list,” he smirked a little. “So maybe next weekend?”
“Next weekend?” You sat up so fast that you almost smacked into his nose, your head spinning for a moment. Joel grabbed you to steady you as you twisted haphazardly to face him again, legs crossed in front of you. “Doesn’t that seem fast?”
He looked at you, puzzled, as he turned to face you, too.
“Goldie, you and fuckin’ Brad…”
“Gale.”
“…Split up a year ago. You gotta get back out there, it’s not fast.”
“No, I mean,” you closed your eyes for a moment, taking a deep breath before looking at him again. “Isn’t that a little fast to find someone for each other? I wouldn’t even know where to start…”
There was something about the sheepish look on his face that made your eyes narrow.
“What.”
“I… might have someone in mind for you already,” he flinched as he said it.
“Seriously?”
“Look, I just don’t want you dating some random asshole, alright?” He said. “He’s a good guy, think you’d have at least some shit in common, feels like I could trust him with you…”
“Gee, thanks,” you rolled your eyes.
“I’m being serious!” He looked down at his lap for a moment, absently picking at a seam on his couch. “I worry about you. I know shit’s dangerous for women, alright? Much rather you be out with someone who I know isn’t gonna hurt you than some guy I don’t know that I can trust…”
“Careful Miller,” you said wryly. “Someone might think you care about me or something.”
“Well, can’t have that now can we,” he looked up to meet your eyes again, small smile on his face. “I’m already worrying about this shit with Sarah and she’s years off from dating. Outside of her, you’re the most important person in the world to me. Want to know you’re OK out there when I’m not with you. And I’m assuming that you wouldn’t want me to tag along on every damn date you have…”
“Bold assumption.”
He glared at you.
“And this way I can know,” he said. “So yeah, alright, it’s crossed my mind.”
“Have you talked to this guy?” You asked. “He might want nothing to do with me.”
“I ain’t worried about that part,” he waved you off. “You’re you and he’s a smart guy, he’ll see what’s on the table. Much more worried about you conning someone into goin’ out with me…”
“Oh ha ha,” you rolled your eyes. “Because you’ve ever had a problem landing women…”
“The kind that stick?” He raised his brows. “Yeah, I have.”
“Fair enough,” you sighed, thinking about the few people you knew in Austin. There was an adjunct professor in your department who you thought might be Joel’s type that you wouldn’t vomit at the thought of seeing him with. “I think I have someone who will go for it. Next weekend?”
“Next weekend,” he confirmed and then laughed a little. “C’mon, don’t look so miserable about it. Whoever you end up with it’ll be better than fuckin’ Brad.”
“Gale,” you corrected again and then slumped forward until your forehead was pressed into Joel’s shoulder. He hesitated for a moment before wrapping his arms gently around you. “This sucks. I got married so I wouldn’t have to date anymore. This is bullshit, I want a refund.”
He laughed once.
“Don’t think that’s how it works, Goldie,” he said, giving you a little squeeze. “Refund part, I mean.”
“Yeah,” you sighed. “I’d just like the best years of my life back.”
Joel was quiet for a moment, one hand finding a gentle, easy path over your back.
“Come on,” he said eventually. “You feel tired. Let’s get some sleep.”
“Yeah,” you sighed. “Assuming you mean here at this point?”
He scoffed.
“Ship sailed on you goin’ home hours ago,” he said. “I know who I’m dealing with.”
“Yeah yeah.”
You pulled away from him slowly and followed him up to his room. He loaned you a t-shirt and you got changed in his bathroom, taking your makeup off as best you could with the world’s most basic facial scrub and water before going to find him in bed. He was sitting up, his back against the headboard, scrolling through his phone. He glanced up at you for a moment when you came in and looked back at his phone for a fraction of a second before looking back at you again, his mouth open slightly.
You frowned.
“What?”
“Nothin’,” he said quickly, plugging his phone in and putting it face down on his nightstand. “Just forgot what shirt I gave you.”
You looked down at it, a faded shirt from the Houston Space Center. You frowned for a moment.
“Was this from when we went when we were kids?” You laughed. “On a field trip?”
“It is,” he said. “I wanted something that would fit as I was bulking up. Might have been a bit ambitious on the size…”
“You’ll have to model it for me sometime,” you said, climbing into bed next to him. He turned out the lamp and you heard him lay down. You gave him a second to adjust before you slipped against his side, his arm gong around you. You could feel the warmth of his breath on your forehead as your cheek found its place on his chest.
“You’re sure about this dating thing?” You asked quietly into the dark. He was so warm next to you. Warm and big and firm and safe. You tried not to think about how desperately you wanted him to say no, in fact, he wasn’t sure. That all he was sure of was that he wanted you.
He sighed instead.
“Think so,” he said.”You really that worried about it?”
You shrugged against him.
“Goldie.”
“Just…” you sighed. “I fucked up one marriage already. Why should I think I’ll get it right next time?”
“You realize that shit isn’t all on you, right?” He asked. “I don’t even know what happened but… I can just about promise that it’s not all on you. Be surprised if any of it is. You gotta stop letting that asshole determine your whole life, Goldie. He’s not worth it.”
“Yeah,” you said, moving closer to him. “You’re probably right.”
Joel made sure both of you were up before Sarah in the morning, sparing you both from any of her prying questions, and you spent the morning with them before going home again and trying to write but getting nowhere. You wasted hours on an outline this time before hating the story so much that it made your stomach clench to even look at it. It was so pathetic, a lost woman clinging to a past lover so hard that she couldn’t chart a path forward, and you couldn’t seem to chart a way toward a satisfying end. You started a fire in your fireplace for the first time just so you could burn the paper you’d wasted on this one. You had a glass of wine as you watched the flames devour it, ash floating to the hearth like snow, white and dead.
Part of it, you were sure, was the fact that you were dreading the idea of talking with Natalie, the adjunct you were going to try to set up with Joel. She’d like him. Of course she’d like him. It was Joel, everyone liked Joel, that was the problem. She’d like him and you’d have to sit there and watch him like her. Love her, eventually. If not her then someone else. You hadn’t been able to handle that when you were 18 and the fact that you were in your 30s now didn’t seem to have changed much. That’s part of why you’d done what you’d done after prom. A small part, perhaps, but a part.
But you were a grown up now, no longer a girl trying to find her way through the maze of the adult reality you found yourself thrust into. Things were going to be different this time.
They had to be.
May 2008, the Tuesday after prom
“Honey?”
You could hear the frown in your mom’s voice as you stumbled to your bedroom.
“That you?”
You caught yourself on the door frame. Your head was still spinning, why was it still spinning? It felt like you were going to throw up.
“Yeah,” you managed. “Just me.”
“You’re home early,” she said, her voice closer. “No Joel today?”
“No,” you said, hoping you sounded normal. “No Joel today.”
“Oh,” she sounded surprised. “Hungry? I can make you something…”
“I’m fine,” you said. “Just… tired. Going to lie down, I think.”
You didn’t wait for a response, just going in your room and closing the door behind you. Your walls were covered in movie posters, the faces of strangers you felt like you knew through their films an odd comfort as you sat on the edge of your bed.
It’s Goldie. I wish it were anyone else. It’d be better if it were anyone else.
That’s what he’d said. Anyone else. Anyone but you.
You weren’t sure how long you stared into space. How were you supposed to face him now? How were you supposed to go back to your life now?
You’d never been a particularly social person - writing all the time didn’t lend itself to vibrant friendships - but Joel had been your person for almost three years. He was who you had, who you told everything to, who you wanted to do everything with. Leaving him behind was going to be the hardest part of going away to school - so hard that part of you was still in denial that it would work that way at all. Part of you thought that he’d find some way to come with you over the summer and it’d be the two of you against the world the way it seemed like it always had been.
But he wouldn’t. He didn’t want to. He didn’t want you.
I wish it were anyone else.
“Fuck,” you whispered to yourself, your voice wet.
Graduation was soon but it was still three weeks out. Three torturous weeks of being next to the person you loved most in the world when they didn’t love you, not really, not at all.
You weren’t sure how long you stared at the wall when it occurred to you.
You forced your body to move, joints stiff, and went to your computer, scrolling back through your email history to one from Dr. Gale Newton. An invitation to a summer creative writing workshop, one you’d decided to pass on because it meant leaving Joel months earlier. You hadn’t been ready for that before. You’d gone about checking with your counselor at school to see if it was even possible before deciding you weren’t ready for it.
You were ready now.
You called the number in his email signature and the phone rang twice before a woman answered.
“Dr. Newton’s office,” she said. “This is Florence.”
“Hi Florence,” you said, sniffing a bit, hoping it didn’t sound like you’d been crying. “Is… um… Is Dr. Newton available?”
“I can check,” she said. “It’s a bit late in the day… Can I ask who’s calling and what this is about?”
You gave her your name and told her that you were a candidate for the summer program.
“Ah, right,” she said. “You were the one denial. Can’t say I remember that happening before! Let me see… yes, one moment, I’ll transfer you back.”
It didn’t take long. Dr. Newton answered on the first ring, saying your name before you had a chance to say anything at all.
“I was wondering if I’d get to speak with you directly,” he said. “I’ve never had a student turn down the intensive before.”
“Yes, I’m sorry about that,” you said, voice trembling a little. “I thought I had some things I needed to finish up here before I moved but, as it turns out, I can come up sooner. I was wondering if my spot would still be available?”
“Well,” he sighed. You could hear the rustle of pages on his end. “The program did already start and you are the only incoming freshman I invited - your online portfolio was quite impressive - I wouldn’t want you to fall behind. How soon could you be here?”
“I could be there for the start of next week’s sessions,” you said. “And I can try to keep up with some work in the mean time if you want to email me some prompts or assignments…”
“No, no need for that,” he said. You heard the click of a mouse. “I’m going back over some of your work now, I think this will work fine for what we’re doing next week. There’s a short story here, Golden Boy, that we can workshop alongside the fresh pieces for the coming sessions.”
You quickly clicked over to the simple blog you’d made to showcase your writing for college applications. You scrolled past one of your senior portraits and bio at the top down to the work and found the story. You couldn’t remember if you’d put the whole piece up or just parts but it was the whole piece, one you’d written about Joel.
It’d be better if it were anyone else.
Your chest got tight.
“Perfect,” you said. “That’s great, thank you so, so much…”
“I hope to see some more dedication out of you when you arrive here,” he said, voice a little more stern now. “I reviewed your portfolio personally and you show a lot of promise but so does every student who comes through this program. If you’re not willing to make sacrifices and work for it, I can’t help you hone that raw skill into what it has the potential to become.”
“I understand,” you said quickly. “I’ll do whatever you want, whatever you think I need…”
“I’m willing to work with you one on one,” he said. “Get you caught up over the next few weeks, both because you missed some of the intensive but because you haven’t had any classes here yet. It’s going to be a lot of time and a lot of effort but I’m happy to put in the work if you’re willing to do the same. I expect you to be devoted to this program, do you think you can do that?”
“Yes sir,” you said. “Absolutely.”
“Good girl,” he said. “I’ll email you my personal cell phone number, call me there when you get to town. I’ll make sure you get set up in your dorm and we can get to work. Sound good?”
“Yes,” you said, your eyes falling on a picture of you and Joel laughing on his couch that glared at you from its place next to your computer monitor. You turned it to face the wall. “Yes it does.”
Next Chapter
A/N: So we now know at least SOME of Bambi's side of the story. Not the whole of it yet but some!
What do you think? Teenaged overreaction? Totally makes sense? Neither? Both?
Also... I hope you caught that Gale had a picture of her before he met her and picked up on how much he'd selected her to be a pupil of particular interest from the get go. He's so slimy. Or, I hope he comes off that way, anyway. He's slimy in my head, at least!
Thank you, as always, for reading. I hope you're enjoying the ride as Joel and Goldie navigate their tangled friendship!
Love you!!!

"Mi vida, I love you, you know I do, but if you don't stop bouncing your leg, I will swerve into Lewy's car and we'll both die with no money and a lawsuit for a legacy." Pedri puts his hand on your thigh while looking over his shoulder to reverse the car into the parking spot. Meeting your eyes, he winks. "And that's usually not what football players get sued for."
You can't help but laugh, pushing his shoulder lightly before forcing yourself to relax. You know there's no reason to be nervous about meeting his family, especially since they're probably the nicest people on this planet given that they literally raised your boyfriend, the kindest and most down-to-earth person you know. But that doesn't change the fact that you need them to love you. There's literally no other option. It's either that or death.
"Sorry," you say sheepishly, glancing at the expensive vehicle parked next to you. You're not sure how much it's worth, but getting sued by the striker for property damage would probably leave you dirt-poor. "He wouldn't actually sue you for hitting his car, right?" You muse. "It's not like needs the money. Or the car."
Pedri shakes his head. "No, but he'd do it to get back at me for flinging the gymnastic ball at his face yesterday."
"Oh," you say, wincing. "Sounds fair."
Pedri snorts and turns off the engine before unbuckling himself. He turns to you with a gentle smile and those big, earnest eyes of his and you feel your heart stutter.
"Ready?" He says and for a second you need to remind yourself that he didn’t ask if you wanted to run away with him and start a cute little family on a island somewhere, but if you were ready to leave the car. That silly mind of yours.
"No." You laugh helplessly. "But can't back out now, can I?"
"You could," Pedri says slowly, thumb rubbing circles into your thigh. "But they'll love you. You've talked to Fer on FaceTime and my parents are fond of you already. You have nothing to worry about and there's nothing you could do wrong. I promise.”
You can see that Pedri genuinely means every word, and it warms your heart to know how important this is to him. You're important to him, you realise, and just like that, you'd do anything for him. That’s crazy, right? He really has you wrapped around his finger and that is one mortifying and reassuring realisation to have right before meeting his parents. Leaning forward, you capture his lips in a kiss before mirroring his smile when you pull back.
"What if I start cheering for Atlético?" You ask innocently.
Pedri pecks your lips again. He pulls the keys out of the ignition and pats your knee, the metal feeling cold against your skin. "Then I'll sue you for property damage."
"What did I damage?"
"My heart."
You burst out laughing. Pedri shoots you a cheeky grin before exiting the car and a moment later, the door on your side opens. You step out, shaking your head at your boyfriend's crooked smile. "That was horrible."
Pedri closes the door and pulls you closer by the loop on your pants, pressing a kiss into your hair. "Anything to hear that pretty laugh of yours." He leaves his hand on the small of your back and rubs the familiar fabric of his kit between his fingers. "Nice kit," he comments as you make your way to the entrance.
"Thanks." You hum, looking down at it. "I wanted to get Gavi's but they didn't have it in-store so I got this. Player 8 is alright."
Cutting you a sideways glare, Pedri pinches your skin, making you yelp. "I take it back. You're horrible." He crosses his arms. "I hope they dislike you and Fer pushes you down the stairs."
You look at him with wide eyes. "Pedri!"
"That's what you get. I hope you get a good tumble in. Toppling down those steps like a cartoon character until there are birds flying over your head." He manages to keep a straight face for a moment longer before he completely dissolves into giggles. Like actual giggles and it's the cutest thing you've ever seen even if you want to kick him.
You both come to a slow halt at the entrance. It leads to the changing rooms, but you need to go through another door to get to your seats. Mikky and the others are probably already inside and so is his family, which is honestly terrifying to think about. You really wish Pedri could at least come with you to introduce you or just stand there and look pretty, but he's already running late.
"I'm sorry," Pedri says with a hint of remaining laughter. He takes both your hands into his and meets your gaze. "Just breathe, yeah? You'll be fine, princesa. My parents and brother will finally meet the beautiful, smart, funny, and kind girl that I've been talking about since March. It’ll be special." He wraps his arms around you and pulls you into his chest. For a moment, all you hear is his heartbeat and things don't seem as dire anymore.
“I’m excited to meet them too, amor," you say softly and pull back to kiss him, whispering against his lips, "Go win this, campéon. We'll be cheering the loudest in there." You poke his side. "Only if I don't crack open my skull and bleed out on those stairs, of course. You fucking sadist."
Pedri chuckles and lowers his face into the nape of your neck, shoulders shaking with laughter. After some encouraging words and a few more kisses, you part ways and find yourself moving on autopilot while going to your seats. Weirdly, it calms you. Camp Nou always has. You've walked through these halls so many times now and every time, you feel like nothing bad could happen at a place this magical.
Your heart gets stuck in your throat anyway when you approach your seats and a familiar-looking dark-haired boy in a Barca kit takes one look at you and his whole face lights up. "Y/N, hola!"
This gets the attention of Pedri's parents, who spin around and immediately greet you with warm smiles and kisses on the cheek. "It is so nice to finally meet you," Rosy says, hugging you tighter. "Pedri has told us so much about you."
"He really did," his father teases, giving you a hug as well. "Can't get him to shut up even if we wanted to."
You laugh, feeling your face heat up at his words. "He's been telling me so much about you all as well, I'm so happy we finally get to meet." Rosy squeezes your arm and Fer flashes you a smile so familiar, it makes you feel like you can actually, genuinely do this. "So when did you arrive? I hope you haven't been waiting for too long."
"Oh, not at all," Pedri’s father replies, "we just got here ourselves. We were hoping to talk to Pedri before the match, but it's fine. We'll see him afterwards."
"About that," Rosy swoops in, and you notice how soft her voice is. “We were hoping to go out to dinner with you two if that's alright with you both. And if you don't have other plans, of course."
You shake your head, warming up to the idea of spending more time with them. "We'd love to join you. Especially after that lunch fiasco today."
"That's great," Rosy answers at the same time that Fernando asks,
"What happened at lunch?"
Sighing, you shake your head and sink to your seat. "It's too terrible to talk about." You glance at them conspicuously before leaning forward as if to share a secret. God knows where the confidence suddenly comes from. "Pedri tried to cook for us."
Horrified gasps meet your statement.
"What did he make?" says Rosy, sounding concerned. "I'm so sorry, mi niña."
"Don't ever let him do that again if you don’t want to get food poisoning. He cooked for me once and I nearly saw the light," Fer warns with a shake of his head.
"Pedri can cook?" Fernando asks, looking extremely confused.
“Can’t,” all three if you say at the same time.
“Oh.” He blinks. “Well, that’s a shame considering we have a restaurant.”
“At least he’s got football going for him. Plus, a beautiful girl who eats his deadly food,” Rosy says.
“Ah.” Fer sighs. “Young love.”
You join their laughter and let your gaze wander down to the pitch as more players start warming up. Honestly, you haven’t even noticed that they’ve come out, but you suppose that can only mean that you’ve gotten along pretty well so far with Pedri’s family, which is a good thing. Very good.
Your eyes land on your boyfriend, who is already looking up at where you’re sitting with his parents and brother. There’s a wide smile stretching across his face and when he gives a wave, you all cheer and wave back. Pedri’s eyes meet yours and you could swear there’s a twinkle in them. He holds up a thumb and arches an eyebrow.
Smiling brightly, you nod and mirror his thumbs up. A dopey grin break out on his face and he touches his lips to send you a kiss. It’s embarrassing how you can’t even pretend not to be absolutely giddy and smitten by this.
You are quick to send a kiss back, which he catches and presses into chest while walking backwards, eyes still locked onto yours. He nearly trips over a ball and you can’t help but laugh, his parents and brother joining in and teasing the both of you relentlessly. The smile your face is hard to wipe off. You really had nothing to worry about.

PLAY MUSIC
Taylor slipped away from him as soon as Marquinhos called his name. She took away with her the electricity, leaving him with just an unusual sense of emptiness. Marquinhos drew closer.
“What is the matter with you?” He yelled. Kylian was pacing back and forth on the hall, trying to control his emotions while his heart raced in the same rhythm as the havoc of his mind. Marquinhos had to slap his shoulder in order to get him focused because he looked like he had just downloaded 10 cups of caffeine all at ones “Kylian!”
“Je ne sais pas!” he snapped, smacking Marcos’ hands away from him in annoyance “Je ne sais pas! Mais cette femme me rend fou ! Elle ne fait que mentir, elle ment toujours, Marcos !”
“Tranquilles Kylian!” he ordered “I don’t know what your deal is with her but you have to get your shit together quick-“
“Why?” he shouted. “Who is she?” Marcos never answered him so Kylian made a step forward. “Did you know she played professionally? is that why she has you and Galtier wrapped around her finger-“
“Whatever is going on with you, you need to fix it before it’s too late! You hear me?”
“I wanna know the truth!”
“The truth is that she is a smart as hell woman that is trying to help all of us and I’m surprised she’s still here after all the shit you’ve put her through!” he poked him on the shoulder, pointing at him “Look at yourself!” he said the last sentence like he was disgusted “what happened to you? You came back from Qatar a different man- since when do you treat woman like that? Do you even recognize yourself in the mirror anymore because I don’t? What is it? Greed? Insecurities? Jealousy?” Kylian couldn’t look at him in the eye, his gaze kept moving around the room finally settling on a window where he could slightly see his own reflection on. “You’re turning into a madman!” He didn’t like what he saw in the mirror, he didn’t like this version of him at all. He was drunk on anger and desperation, he was high on self insecurity and he could see it in his eyes. “Swear to god, this is your last warning!” he said and left.
Kylian moved back a little, his hand was itching, his fist begging to come in contact with anything and it did. He punched the wall, drawing back quickly in pain. A few moments later Hakimi was by his side, holding him by the arm. He didn’t even know if he had been there the entire time but now he was pushing him back and dragging him from the nearest exit. He practically pushed him out in the balcony and Kylian felt the chilling cold on his skin, violently reminding him who and where he was. He gripped on the railing. And for a while neither of them said anything.
“I’m scared for you Ky!” said Hakimi. “I don’t understand what’s gotten into you. I’m trying but I can’t- it can’t be just her. What is it?”
“Can’t you see it?” he asked, yelling. He looked at his friend “I don’t know how she does it but she always does. It’s her eyes- she looks at you and you feel like the smallest person in the world. I look at her and all I see are my mistakes.” He pointed at his fingers while he spoke “The shot I didn’t take. The pass I didn’t give. The chance I didn’t see. Always down to the detail with her, isn’t it?” Hakimi’s eyes expressed a sort of pitifulness they give you when they know you are being unreasonable. He wanted to help his friend but even he was afraid to draw closer. Watching your friend falling apart right in front of you eyes, it was never easy. “And it’s driving me insane! The way she can play with my mind like that. The way she sees right through it and the closer I let her see, the more she is…” he tried to find the right word “poising me. Turning me into this-“ he stopped “That’s what’s worse! Cause Marcos is right! I don’t even recognize myself anymore!”
This was a cry for help. It’s amazing how much a person can get in your head when you let them. Hakimi went closer, placing his hand on his friend’s shoulder while Kylian looked at the street. He knew that’s all his friend needed for now; silence.
“And then…” his voice trailed off
“Then what?”
Kylian closed his eyes. He imagined her against the wall, her figure in contrast to his. Her skin in contact to his, he made a fist with his hand trying to replicate what it felt like holding her but all he held was emptiness and cold air. Was it poison or just the stinking feeling of alcohol cleaning his wounds? He couldn’t understand.
He turned around to go back to the ‘party’. He wanted to erase every thought, feeling, doubt of the last 20 minutes. Hakimi stepped in front of him to stop him.
“Where are you going?”
“I just need a drink.” He said and moved around him.

Colorful but dark lights filled the room, smell of smoke and alcohol. Kylian made his way to the bar, passing in between the dancing figures. The room was much more crowded now, everyone was either tipsy or already wasted. Footballers, models, journalists. A dangerous mix. All of them dancing together like they were choreographed.
And she was in the distance, next to her loyal friend Trish and Sergio Ramos. She saw him too their eyes meeting for a split second before she got closer to his teammate, on her tiptoes. He saw her whispering something in his ear, Ramos hand slipping on her lower back, bringing her closer to him just so he’d listen better. He wanted to interrupt, he wanted to get in between them. His eyes glaring at them while every fiber of his being called him to ran to them like she was the ball and she was about to be stolen. The music was like a void in his mind, the room felt like it was getting smaller, trapping him in his thoughts. He made a step forward, he was stopped just as quick. A hand reaching for his. He looked to his side. Hakimi.
“Don’t!” he warned.
A moment later she was exiting the venue with Ramos by her side, whispering something in her ear and Trish on Ramos’s other side. They were leaving together. Why did he care?
He went to the bar, asked for a shot of vodka before asking for the second, the third, before the room started spinning, before Verratti came up to him saying something about taylor and a journalist. He couldn’t follow. Before he danced on the dance floor with a woman he never met in his life. A woman he didn’t have to impress, a woman that was already in awe of him, a woman that reflected his greatness in her eyes and held him like he was gold. Touched him like he was priceless at the back of his car. Kissed him like he was a toy that she’d leave like he was just another number when she was done.
But he wasn’t satisfied by it, he thought he would be but he wasn’t. He was as lonely and as angry with himself as he was before, as he had been for almost a month. And as he laid on the backseats with the random woman on his side, Taylor’s lips still ghosted over his. The picture of seeing her and Ramos together still flickered in his mind. All the things he said to her, echoed in his head and he wasn’t sure if he wanted to throw up by the words he said to her or the alcohol. He thought of all that while He looked at himself on the review mirror, his eyes were so dark, so blank. So unfamiliar to him. What was he turning into?
TAYLOR’S APARTMENT – NIGHT
PLAY MUSIC
Taylor had been silent for the whole ride, while Trish and Sergio flirted like high school kids at the front. She’d always find herself stroking the places that he touched with his skin or his breath. Her wrist, the skin under her eyes. The back of her thumb passed over her lips, the lips that he never kissed but he still somehow managed to make wonder what he’d taste like. She didn’t recognize this feeling, she didn’t like it, it was dangerous.
Trish entered first and went straight to the toilet because as she said she was gonna pee her pants if she didn’t go in.
When she got in the house she sat on her bed and then quickly fell backwards on the sheets, closing her eyes. Then opening them again because every time she closed them all she could see were his black heavy eyes. Trish came out mumbling about something that Taylor couldn’t pay attention in. A few seconds later Trish was sitting on the edge of the bed, slapping her thigh to get her back on earth. Taylor sat up, looking at her friend for some compassion.
“You gonna tell me what’s going on?”
She was trying to form sentence but no one coherent thought would come out of her lips. Where would she even start? “I need a drink.”
“We were just at a party!” Trish reminded her, narrowing her eyes “with free drinks.”
“I need like 10 shots of tequila in a bottle of wine this big” she showed it with her hands and got up. Searching in the cupboards for some alcohol. Trish watched confused, wondering why they even left the party if she was just gonna get wasted here.
“Is this allowed in your condition?”
Taylor laughed, then gasped ones she found the bottle she was looking for. She didn’t have glasses so she used the coffee cups on the counter.
“My condition?” she repeated, still laughing. “You know what’s not allowed in my condition? Kylian, he is the absolute worst for my condition.” She opened the wine aggressively. Poured the wine on the cups and drank hers before she even got the other one to Trish. “How-“ she swallowed “how can he be such fucking asshole? And then just-“ she stopped herself, refilling her cup.
Trish raised her eyebrow, almost smiling at her friend “and then what?” she asked. Trish took pride in her talent of picking on energies and tensions. She knew the moment she laid her eyes on them. Taylor drank the second cup in one breath. Trish had to get up and take the bottle from her, then she helped her find her was back on the bed, making her sit on the edge. Taylor looked blankly at her desk.
“then his eyes.” She finally said, dropping her entire body back on the sheets again. “they’re so dark all the time.”
Trish laid next to her, balancing her elbow on the mattress and her head on her hand. “sexy isn’t, it?”
“Shut up.” She said quickly making her laugh. Trish dropped on her back as well, both of them staring at the ceiling.
“I saw the way he looked at you. Just before you threw yourself at Serg.”
Taylor peaked at her, opening her one eye and raising her eyebrow “Serg?”
“Shush! Not the point. Tell me what happened between you two.”
Taylor shook her head slightly, closed her eyes “I’m not sure.” She bit on her lips, the same haunted memory returning in her head. Was he going to kiss her if Marcos didn’t show up? Did she want him to? “But I have a feeling… it’s gonna get worse before it gets better.”
TAYLOR’S APARTMENT – DAY
Taylor woke up by the morning light. Not the alarm. Which was the first thing that made her feel like something was wrong. She lifted her head from the covers, looking around to realize where she was and what day, month, year it was. She reached for her phone.
“FUCK!” She dropped it as soon as she saw the time. Jumped of the bed and looked around the messy room for her clothes, anything that she could wear. She didn’t even check herself in the mirror. She just let her hair down, hoping it wasn’t that bad and put on her sneakers. Trish woke up by the banging and running around, murmuring.
“What are you doing?”
“I’m late.”
“You’re always late its fine.”
“he’s gonna kill me.”
She grabbed her keys and she left.
TRAINING CAMPUS – DAY
“nice of you to show up Seven!” said Marquinhos.
Kylian’s walk was slow, everything in his body hurt. His eyes, his legs, his stomach. Training was the last thing he needed. He ignored Marco’s comment and took of his jacket leaving it on the benches and walked over to the field. He had changed on the car after leaving the girl he spent the night with at her house. He thank god he had a left over uniform there. He started doing his stretching, raising his leg up to his stomach. Verratti walked up to him, doing his stretches next to him.
“You’re not the only one late.”
“What?” Kylian’s mind was too much of a mess to follow or listen.
“Wilock hasn’t showed up yet.”
Kylian’s eyes lifted in worry. His first instinct was look around for Ramos. He caught him on the other side of the field laughing about something with Messi. Wasn’t he the one that drove her home last night? He started running to him, making it look like he was just jogging for training. He stood in between Messi and him, listening to the conversation while he stretched his arms.
Sergio nodded as acknowledgment “you look like shit.” He laughed. Always a bully.
“had a rough night, Amigo?” Leo joked.
Since when were they Amigos? He was tired of pretending everything was fine after the world cup. Sometimes he straight up just wanted to his him in the face- wait, why was he admitting that. He looked up at Sergio, ignoring Messi completely.
“What about you, did you have fun last night?”
Ramos narrowed his eyes. He was confused. He let out a short laugh, shrugging his shoulders “Had some fun, yes.”
Kylian nodded. Suddenly he had no idea what to ask or perhaps how to ask it. Then the whistle was heard in the distance. Marquinhos gathered the entire team in the middle of the field for the beginning of the simulation. This time, team captains were Marquinhos and Leo. Thank God Kylian was on Marcos’s team with Hakimi and Sergio was with Leo. He took a deep breath and put every single one of his thoughts on pause. Although as fate would have it he fought a lot with Sergio to get the ball from him. He’d always end up somehow next to him, drippling and fouling him even.
“Chill down Man!” said Sergio while he got up after what would be the second time that Kylian knocked him down. Kylian mumbled a short apology while he distanced himself from him and continued to play. Taylor still hadn’t showed up.
GALTIER’S OFFICE – DAY
Galtier was reading her notes. He had his glasses on, silence filling the room while he read. She sat across from him. She kept glancing at him, expecting a reaction, anything that would give away if he agreed with her or not. She already felt bad about being late, she didn’t want to get another strike on the same day. Eventually he took of his glances, leaving them on the desk as well as her documents. Taylor gave him a smile when he looked up at her.
“Group therapy? Is this some sort of prank.”
She didn’t answer.
“You want me to put 20 adults in a room for group therapy?”
“Not all of them. Just 3 for starters.”
“Which would be?”
She hesitated “Number 10, 7 and 30.”
Galtier laughed “you want Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe to have a couples therapy?” She didn’t answer. Smiling weakly, so she wouldn’t offend him. Was it really funny when your entire team was falling apart because of lack of chemistry? “good god you’re serious.”
“Yes, I’m afraid I am”
“Number 7 and 10 are getting better along.”
“Do they? I mean it doesn’t seem like I wanna kill Kylian every second of everyday but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to-“ she murmured under her breath. Galtier only caught half of what she said. Narrowing his eyes. “Point is!” she said raising her voice “their chemistry on the field it’s still messy and when the big 3 can’t get along your team is bound to fall apart. It’s like you have cliques in your team. Hakimi, Verratti and Mbappé. Messi and Neymar. They need to break out of their comfort zone.”
“And that’s all in your reports as well?”
“Yes sir. You’ll have them tomorrow.”
“Finally.” He mumbled “ok fine, bring me the individual reports and we’ll discuss it again tomorrow. Meanwhile you need to give Julie your personal information for the trip in Doha and Riyadh and be here early tomorrow so we can announce your role to the boys.”
“Hm?” she raised her eyes. She had forgotten about that last part.
“You can start coaching them accordingly.” He explained.
“right. Yes. Of course.”
“Listen to me closely Ms. Wilock. The match against Al Nssr is especially important. You understand why.”
“You have three of the best players in the world and you are scared Ronaldo will kick your ass anyway.” She said before she hadn’t even thought that it might have been inappropriate. She still had her habit of saying exactly what was on her mind with no regret.
“That’s not exactly how I would have worded it Ms. Wilock.” He paused, eyeing her closely “but as long as you get the point.”
She smiled “I do sir.”
OUTSIDE TRAINING AREA / TRAINING CAMPUS – DAY
Taylor watched them playing, trying to avoid Kylian on purpose. She’d look at Sergio or Leo, anything to keep her attention away from the guy that had haunted her last night. She smiled as Marquinhos ran to her when he saw her, holding a football on his one hand.
“You wanna join for the second half?” he asked. She didn’t expect that question, she frowned. “We are almost done. I mean you don’t have to pressure yourself but-“ he took a quick look at the boys and then back at her “my team is losing.”
She laughed, letting down all her bags. “Are you that desperate?”
“Come on” he laughed along with her, smiling. “Fabian just walked out. I’m missing a player.”
“Why do I feel like you have something else planned?”
He shrugged “It’s just 20 minutes. What could happen in 20 minutes?”
She thought about it, crossing her arms. Maybe a quick game was all she needed. “Just because you are my favorite one.”
She took of her jacket, dropping it on a set of chairs and lifted her sweatpants up to her knee. She pulled her hair in quick bun while she walked with him back on the field. She took a quick glance at Kylian, catching the tension in his eyes expecting him to say something but he didn’t. He backed away and stood behind Hakimi instead.
“Hey that’s not fair!” Neymar stepped forward “what’s this?”
“It’s a substitution. Fabian is out, she’s taking his place-“
“Hold on you didn’t say we could have her!” said Ramos, stepping forward as well with a smile on his face “I’d have taken her on our team.”
“Wanna fight for me Ramos?” she asked, smirking.
“Damn right I do!” he answered quickly.
“Merde” Kylian murmured behind his teeth, rolling his eyes. Hakimi saw that and pushed him slightly to move away from the crowd. Taylor took a quick look to see which players were wearing the blue flannels that gave away they were on Marcos’ team. She noticed Kylian was wearing one too. Her eyes stayed on him for a while as he and Hakimi were discussing something. He saw her, nodding to her direction and that gave her somewhat of a relief because it wasn’t a rude nod. It was like he was telling her ‘Let’s just focus on the game’ and she liked that. She wanted that too. So, the game started.
She was there mostly as a midfielder, running and stealing the ball from whoever she could. That earned her a few strikes from the opposite team when she would try to tackle them. But the vibe was different from the first time she played with them. Like she was actually part of the team. Marcos’ team was losing 1-2. And her presence didn’t make a lot of difference at first. She and Kylian would look at each other from time to time but there was zero communication between them.
During the last 5 minutes the ball landed on Kylian’s feet and he ran with it from their end of the field to the others. He was swiftly tackled by Ektike in the middle of the field, who stretched his leg out and kicked the ball away from him. The ball was supposed to go to Messi but Taylor jumped in between stealing the pass for herself. Ramos, as a defender ran towards her but she kicked the ball to the left side of the field to escape all the defenders until she realized how close to the net she was.
She calculated the angle, her mind spinning in insane speed, while she counted the possibilities this could down. She counted the defenders in front of her. There was one possibility that she could take the shot and it would land on the net but it was a risk. She looked up, Kylian was on the middle. She kicked the ball up at Kylian and he dropped on the ground, sliding and kicking it for it to go the net just in between the goalkeeper’s legs. He got up instantly, screaming in happiness for his accomplishment while the rest of his teammates ran to him.
Taylor stood watching them while they all got on top of each other. Laughing and messing around with Kylian. She smiled. She didn’t feel alone, if anything she felt proud while she watched them, these were gonna be her boys no matter what and she came in the sudden realization that it wasn’t a matter of if she’d let go of her blog. There was no chance in the world she could do both things, there was no way she could stand hurting any of them again. She felt a sudden warmth under her eye. It was a tear, rolling down her cheek like a confession. She wiped it away quickly, only then realizing Kylian was coming forward. With an enigmatic expression on his face, she wasn’t sure what she wanted but the closer he’d get the more the memories started coming back. The more she wanted to step away, expecting a wall to be behind her and him trapping her again. Instead he lifted his hand, waited for her to shake it. She hesitated, glancing between his hand and his eyes before finally holding it. The skin to skin contact, lingering a little longer. Suddenly she was back at the roof holding his hand, or in the bathrooms the first day when he grabbed her arm, or last night when he held her wrist. But all these memories and all the bitterness seemed to be replaced by the sweetness and honesty of this moment. Looking in each other’s eye, shaking each other’s hands. Perhaps for a little too long while she tried to decipher the look in his eyes until Verratti came and called him to get back on the game.
Their hands slipping away from each other.
She was swept off her feet by behind by someone. She twisted her head to see who it was, her expression softening when she saw Neymar. He let her down and she turned around, hugging him from his neck. “I’m sorry for that.” She mumbled in his chest.
“Hate it when you play for the other team.” He said, pulling back a little and she looked in his eyes. That’s not what she was apologizing for.
“never again.” She smiled and they both ran back on the field for the last few minutes of the match.
LOCKER ROOMS HALLWAY – LATER
Taylor was so sweaty, all she wanted to do was go back home and have the warmest most chilling shower she could. And she was so tired, her headache getting worse by the minute.
She made a turn to the room with the spare clothes. Puffing and blowing out air from her chest, while she rubbed her temple, feeling the sweat coming from her hair on her hand. When she entered the room she stopped on her tracks. Kylian. Naked from the waist up.
“Sorry-“ she said quickly, closing her eyes and turning on her heel to leave.
“No, no. I’m done.” He said, putting on his shirt and walking to the exit. Taylor turned around again, not knowing that he’d be behind her now and knocking on him with a jolt. She stepped back quickly, her hands barely brushing on his chest. She moved away just as fast, looking at the closets for a spare shirt. He observed her while she tried to choose a shirt that probably fit her. He knew she wasn’t going to talk to him, so he contemplated leaving. He even turned around, ready to leave her alone but it was eating him alive. So, he maneuvered back to her.
“Thanks for earlier. That was a good pass.”
“hm” she said coldly. Picking out a shirt. He hated this coldness from her, he liked it more when she talked back at him or yelled. This was unfamiliar.
“I really didn’t think you’d do it.”
She looked at him when she headed for the exit. He stood on entrance so she was basically forced to acknowledge him. “That’s the difference between you and me, Kylian. You wouldn’t take the shot. I don’t let my personal issues get in the way of my game. Ever.”
He nodded, twisting his mouth and pursing his lips together. He looked at the floor. “Still part of you must have hit it because you hoped it would get on my face.” He tried to lighten the mood but all he got was a sigh and a roll of her eyes. She went around him to leave, he lifted his hand to hold her arm but he stopped midway, pulling his hand back before he touched her. “I’m sorry for last night.” That seemed to stop her. She stood in the empty hallways, examining him. There she was again, making him feel like the smallest person in the world. He couldn’t stand it and the urge to fight her again was coming back but he tried to ignore it by looking away- he failed. “Why you gotta keep doing that?” he snapped, finally asking her straightforward. But she wasn’t sure what she was doing. So, she knitted her eyebrows. And he motioned at her with his hand “Your eyes. You have this look like you are judging everything all the time. It’s frustrating.” She snorted, shaking her head. “Even now im trying to apologize and you’re always just-“
“Just what Kylian?” she asked, topping his voice and walking back to him “what do you expect? An apology is enough after all the shit you’ve put me through ever since I got here?” She stood under him. Her eyes bored into him. Reminding him his flaws, his shortcomings.
“Don’t do that…” he warned in a whisper, looking down at her. How was she the smaller of the two but he always felt falling short around her. He diverted his gaze at the walls, shielding his lips, biting them even. The familiar anger, only she could bring out, was rising. Burning his insides, he was trying so hard not to snap at her again, not to touch her. He had to lay against the doorframe, hold his hands in fists and keep them against the wall just to make sure he wouldn’t grab her again.
“Is that why you were so angry last night?” she asked, searching for his eyes “you couldn’t pretend anymore that I’m just a silly journalist.” She laughed bitterly “it dawned on you that maybe everything I’ve said to you until now, is true. You hate it, don’t you?” she asked the last question in a whisper, bitter voice “You could hide from it while you thought I was a high school player.” His eyes found hers and he saw that they were more brutal than ever. Like she actually hated him. Almost like she was trying to provoke him, see how far she could get him before he returned to his old ways. Like she wanted him to beg for mercy. She stepped closer, tilting her head upward “Can’t hide anymore”
“Defiantly not a high school player.” He agreed but even that came out in a disrespectful way “because you know exactly what you are doing in the field and out of it.” He leaned down, she stepped back and he stepped forward “you know exactly what you are doing to me.” She snorted again, awkwardly, twisting her head away from him. Making another step backwards, only so he’d make another forward “who’s hiding now?”
“Still as delusional as last night.”
“tell that to yourself a couple of times you might believe it” She reached the other side of the door. Her back bumping on it while Kylian kept his eyes as piercing as always. Suddenly he felt himself getting taller. She licked her back teeth her tongue, clenching her jaw. He raised his hands to remind her that he wasn’t touching her, that she could leave if she wanted to. “But I think I have some power over you as well after all.”
“Wouldn’t that make you feel better about yourself?”
“Nothing about you makes me feel better about myself” he spat, drawing closer “that’s the problem.” He confessed “if anything all I see when I look at you is everything I hate about myself—” he leaned down, his face hovering over hers “and I can’t understand if you’re doing it on purpose but it’s eating me alive.” his hands remained in distance but he still managed to shield her by holding on the walls “my failures, the pressure, the anticipation—” he lowered his head even more and for a moment he allows himself to believe that he can have her, he looked at her lips “I always seem to do the wrong thing, say the unforgivable because you push me to my limit without even trying.” Their thighs were touching now, he liked the contact “and I’m always torn between hating you for it and…” his voice trailed off. His last confession falling short. “Parfois, tout ce que je veux, c’est te serrer dans mes bras et te montrer à quel point je peux être bon. Parce qu’aucune femme, dans ma vie, ne m’a jamais fait ressentir ça.”
She had her eyes on him the entire time. The language barrier wasn’t as tall anymore. She had no idea what his words were but somehow, she understood exactly what she wanted to say and her mouth getting drier, the closer that he’d get to her. Realizing that he had shield her again, noticing the darkness in his eyes again. She shook her head, slowly, keeping her face down, to make sure he had no access to her lips. His breathing would fall on her ear now, warming it, because he was that close. “It’s not happening Kylian.”
“Why not?” he said in her ear.
Oh how weak his voice on her ear made her. How many shivers it sent on her entire body. Oh, how she hated it and loved it all the same. She tightened her entire expression, keep her head high but turned at the right side. That way he couldn’t really see her eyes. Not that he cared because all he was looking at was her neck.
And she wanted to tell him: cause I’m your coach, cause I’m JW and I really am the worst liar in the world. Because I would be risking everything just by looking at you the way that you are looking at me. But she didn’t and he leaned even closer, so much so that she could sense his lips moving against her ear. So much so that she had to remind herself repeatedly why this tension should remain unresolved. But a twisted part of her still wanted to touch him, kiss him.
“I couldn’t stand seeing you with Ramos last night” he admitted. “Same way I can’t stand when you analyze my playing, reminding me every time that I’m not good enough.” His lips brushed on her ear; her hair stuck on his lips. She straightened her head, their eyes meeting. Kylian leaned closer, waiting for permission. Their lips so close he could taste it.
“No because…” she whispered. He looked in her eyes. This was it. She’d either say it now or he’d find out with everyone else in the morning. She could be honest, first time that would happen between them, but she could do it. Kylian frowned waiting for her to continue.
Voices laughing coming from a distance in combination with fast steps let them know that the whole team was coming downstairs. They pulled away from each other automatically.
Taylor left before they could see her, sneaking into one of the bathroom stalls and locking the door. She lowered her entire body, holding on her face. “Fuck” she whispered. This was only the beginning of the day and she was scared to face the rest. She wasn’t one to let in her impulsive thinking, she always planned everything ahead. She learned the hard way that things don’t work out the way you want to and you must always have a back up plan but she was out of back up plans.
INSIDE GYM / TRAINING CAMPUS – AFTERNOON
Kylian hid on the gym. He wanted to distract himself, he wanted to stop thinking about her despite the spell that she had casted on him. Verratti came in, calling for him.
“Just hanged up with Ann. She says she’s looking into it.”
Kylian looked at Verratti while running on the treadmill, giving him the same confusing look, he gave him in the morning.
“Who’s Ann?”
“Man were you even listening to me last night?”
“I wasn’t listening to anything last night.”
“she’s a journalist. Says she can find dirt on Wilock.”
“Wait- what?” Kylian pressed the button to stop the thread mill getting down so he wouldn’t fall “you got a journalist into this?”
“Yeah man. She already got some nice information. You told me to go ahead with it, did you forget?”
Kylian closed his eyes trying to remember, he rubbed his forehead. He was surprised by his own Insolence. “She keeps saying she has a theory but she isn’t sure yet--”
“Let it go man!” he said calmly
“What?”
“Just let it go.” He repeated and reached down for his water bottle. “she’ll be gone in a week.”
“I mean it’s a already done now!”
Kylian eyed him. Shaking his head “why would you bring someone else into this? you might get us in trouble.” He asked.
“she’s a friend-”
“She’s a journalist. She’ll sacrifice your friendship for a headline in seconds.”
“She won’t do anything. She says she can dig shit up about JW as well. Kylian, you agreed to do this! What has gotten into you now?”
“I didn’t know what I was agreeing to last night, alright?” he huffed, breathing out curse words in anger “just don’t get me mixed up in this shit-” he grabbed his gym bag and his water bottle. Leaving.
Tumblr media
The two kept looking at each other when they thought the other wasn’t looking. Taylor was stealing glances at him while also trying to write her speech for the next day. Drawing over all the sentences she’d start because nothing was good enough. She didn’t even know where to start. The truth about JW or being their coach. Everything seemed wrong like she had betrayed them in the worst way and yet she didn’t want to apologize. Why would she apologize for doing her job as a journalist? She closed her eyes. Ones again lining over what she had written.
Kylian was taking a look whenever he could. The things Verratti had told him in combination of their little moment in the halls were brewing in his mind. He wanted to warn her for some reason, maybe because he knew that if anything bad happened, she was gonna blame it on him. Or maybe because he cared. He could feel her staring sometimes, her eyes practically scanning him but whenever he’d look at her, she’d look away in an instant. He’d notice her expression of lust for a couple short seconds.
Before she left, she came to speak to Marquinhos. At the point he and a few other members of the team were sitting in a circle on the field taking a break. Kimpembe, who was on her team during the game, started clapping.
“Wanna go another round?” he asked, laughing.
She dropped her head, shaking it “wouldn’t last playing another game with you.”
“Ky should be grateful; you saved that one.” Ektike said, being the one that almost ruined Kylian’s shot in the first place. Kylian was sitting with knees close to his chest and his arms laid on his knee bones, playing with a piece of grass in between his fingers. He tried to pretend like he focused with that, not answering to his comment. Taylor looked at him from the corner of her eye, smiling weekly at Ektike’s comment.
“He thanked me enough, don’t worry” she noted “in his way.” Kylian lifted his head to see her. He bit his lips so he wouldn’t smile. He didn’t expect it but she had a teasing grin on her face. “Marcos, can I speak with you for a second?”
“Sure!”
Marcos got up, dusting off the grass from his uniform as he stood. They walked away together, whispering in the distance about something. She looked worried and he looked like he was motivating her, rubbing her shoulder. Kylian stood up, copying Marcos’ movements and dusting away the grass. He started walking over to them, deciding that he wanted to tell Taylor the truth but they were done with their conversation before he could get to them. Taylor went towards the exit while Marquinhos was walking to Kylian’s direction.
“Where’d you think you’re going?”
“I need to speak to her.”
“No, you don’t. You need to finish your training; you have an hour left.”
“It will only take 5 seconds.”
“It never takes only 5 seconds with you. Back on the field now!”
Kylian couldn’t argue. He had already one strike too many with Marquinhos. He backed away, the frustration returning in his mind.

He was doing the exercise of Tiki-Taka with Hakimi, Ramos, Messi, Kimpembe and Neymar. Kylian was in the middle trying to get control of the ball while the others passed it around each other. He was getting tired and not enjoying it while the others seemed to take pleasure in his struggle. Especially Ramos, he was having a great laugh watching him suffer. He had been trying to for a while, his mind unable to focus when he almost had it but then he was pushed on the ground. Falling on his side. It was Ramos that pushed him. It was a gesture that otherwise he would have laughed away in good spirit. They always teased each other. But not today. He got up, getting in Ramos’ face-
“je vais te frapper au visage!” he said in a gruff voice. Ramos was still laughing, giving him a light push like he thought Kylian was messing around. The moment he touched his shoulder, Kylian slapped his hand off. That seemed to alarm Ramos, whose expression darkened and made a step closer to Kylian.
“What’s your deal man?”
“J'ai un problème avec ton visage!”
Ramos lowered his eyebrows “calm down kid—”
Hakimi launched himself forward and in between them to separate them. He pushed Kylian back while he pointed at Ramos like he was warning him “Call me kid one more time!” he yelled. Hakimi shushed him, pushing him on the other end of the field and holding both of his shoulders to keep him still. Marquinhos had seen what happened and was already at Ramos’ side, listening to their side of the story. Kylian knew he was done for, so he moved away and left practice.
When he went on the locker rooms, he found Verratti texting in his phone. Verratti’s eyes landed on him, a smirk on his lips.
“Did you know she played in Chelsea?”
Kylian didn’t sit around to hear more. He left, grabbing his bag and going to find her.
TAYLOR’S APARTMENT / BATHROOM – NIGHT
“Dad says she’s getting bigger.” Taylor yelled from inside the shower. The blue thin curtain separated her from Trish, who was doing her make up on the mirror above the sink.
“What did you expect? She’d stay 4, forever?”
“It’s still weird.” She mumbled “makes me feel older every year on her birthday.”
“That’s because you are actually getting older.” Said Trish while pouting her lips to put her lipstick on. Taylor pushed the curtain, opening it slightly for a second to throw water at her. Trish screamed and jumped, backing away “Goddamn you woman!” she yelled. “if you ruin my dress, I’m stealing yours.” She said and left the bathroom.
Trish started picking her last stuff to put on her bag. Taylor opened the curtain and covered herself with on of her white towels. And picked her hair up with another pink towel. She came out of the bathroom, leaning against the doorframe. She watched her friend getting ready, smiling.
“This reminds me of high school.”
Trish snorted, sitting on the bed and putting her shoes on. “some thing’s never change. No matter how hard I try to. You’re still letting me go to parties alone.”
“Ramos will be there. You’ll be fine.” She sang “You know I’d come if it wasn’t for work. Just be careful.”
“I will.” She sat up, making a spin around herself to show her friend her outfit. “How do I look?”
“Beautiful.”
Trish clapped and walked over to Taylor, placing her hand on her cheek. “You sure you’re gonna be, ok?”
“Gotta starts getting used to these lonely nights, no matter how much I miss you. Dad. Lily.” She smiled “I’ll be fine. But try not to have too much without me.”
“Can’t make any promises” Trish kissed her cheek and grabbed her jacket from the hanger behind the door. “don’t wait up for me. Love you.”
“Love you too” said taylor but she was already out of the door. A silent meow was heard coming from the floor. Taylor looked down only to find Luna pouring in front of her feet, head bumping her while pleading for food. “Gimmie a minute to change angel.” She said and walked back to the bathroom. She released her hair from the towel, her we strand falling on her shoulders, freezing her skin. She patted them with the towel, trying to dry them as much as she could before she used the drier.
Until there was a knock on the door.
She looked at the direction of the bedroom/living room.
She went to open the door. Her hand holding on the doorknob.
She turned it.
Opened it.
“Kylian?”
She didn’t have time to ask what he was doing here because he barged in. Talking about something she couldn’t understand. Like he was trying to warn her. She was trying to catch up with what he was saying but the shock of seeing him there in the first place in combination with the fact that she was naked under the towel made her freeze.
“…I just want you to know that if shit happens, I had nothing to do with it—”
“Kylian!” she tried but he kept going, mumbling something about Verratti and a journalist.
“He told half the team about it—” She looked around for her robe but she found it at her bed. And Kylian was standing in front of it, so that was not an option. He hadn’t even looked at her since he barged in. “She’s brutal taylor—”
“KYLLIAN!” She yelled, holding on the towel over her chest “What on earth are you talking about?” she questioned raising her voice. He finally turned his eyes on her, finally taking in her figure, finally realizing. His mouth fell shut, his mind going blank, he forgot why he was there in the first place. His eyes settled on her bare shoulders. They were slightly covered by her long hair. Not enough to keep him from wanting to touch them. She held on tighter on the towel, feeling his gaze deepening.
They locked eyes with each other, neither of them saying a thing.
PLAY MUSIC
He should have left, just as quick as he came in. he didn’t.
She should have told him to leave. Yelled at him even. She didn’t.
“What the hell are you doing here?” she asked.
That reminded him. He was here to tell her about Verratti. But that could wait until the morning.
There was a sort of silence that was loud enough for both, like it was saying everything for them while they looked at each other. Speechless. That was a first.
“Oh Kylian” she sighed, but it was more of a beg. She wasn’t sure what she was begging for but she was begging for something. She closed her eyes, leaning her back against the wall, like she was giving in to something. She couldn’t see him but she could feel him getting closer. His shadow covering her whole. She refused to look at him because she knew she’d be met with those dark eyes. His dark haunting beautiful lies that could see right through her. Just like earlier in the morning, every memory she had with him flashed before her eyes, including their moment in the hallways. They had left something unfinished. Twice now they had done that.
‘Dangerous territory’ is what Hakimi had called it. That was an understatement, thought Kylian.
She bit on her tongue, leaning her head on the wall, looking down her eyes still closed. Why was he coming closer? More importantly Why wasn’t she stopping him?
He lifted his hand, his fingers grazing over her bare skin, begging to touch her. But he was holding himself back, as much as he was struggling. He made a fist with his hand trying to keep his fingers away from her skin. He looked away, moving his fist slightly against the air.
“Verratti knows about Chelsea. He knows about the incident and you condition. Maybe more…” He whispered. It was all he could explain for now, in the few words that he was left with. Because his mind was a tangled mess. She opened her eyes, realizing how close he was now. She looked up at him.
“That’s why you’re here?” she asked.
“Yeah.” he spoke, twisting his tongue “that’s why I came.”
But the reason he wanted to stay was different. She nodded. He was supposed to leave now. Open the door and go back down to his car. Yet he couldn’t move, it was like she had him tied there and he couldn’t do anything without her permission. He stared in her eyes, tightening his jaw.
“tell me to leave.”
Now that was a beg if there ever was one. She saw it in his posture, in his eyes. Heard it in his tone, his breath, his heartbeat.
“Please god tell me to leave.”
She thought her mouth and throat had gone completely dry; her lips were stuck together. She couldn’t speak.
He stepped forward. Realizing his fingers again towards her shoulders. She watched them, it was easier than looking in his eyes. She didn’t stop him when they got closer, she didn’t stop him when they bruised her skin while pushing her hair away. She took a deep breath in, giving in the tension. Dangerous indeed.
She never said it, so he never left.
He leaned in, lower and lower until their lips were so close to each other there was only one way to go and that was closer. They don’t know who initiated it. They both like to believe it was the other person because that was, they could blame them for the chaos that it would create.
Did it really matter who started it when she was the one pulling him closer by holding his shirt on her fists. Or he was the one gripping her lower back like that. Pleading for access in her mouth. Did the day after matter when she tasted him whole or her hands reached under his shirt, lifting it off him and throwing it on the other end of the room? Did it matter when his hands pulled her up on his arms and allowed her to wrap her legs around his waist, only so he’d drop her on the bed and hover over her a minute later? Did it matter when they looked in each other’s eyes like they knew they were about to taste the drug that would destroy them?
No, it didn’t.
Or if it did. It didn’t.
Cause when he kissed her neck, she gave in. and when he uncovered her body by untangling her towel, he went weak. Was it hate? Is that why hit bit on her skin, just to hear her whimpers? Was it something else? That made her rushing hands reach for his zipper and open it while he left kisses in between her breasts.
She cupped his face, forcing him to look in her eyes again before she became his for the night. In any way a person can be given to another.
GALTIER’S OFFICE – NEXT DAY
When she woke up, he wasn’t there. He was kind enough to leave a note, saying he’ll see her on training. She didn’t think much about it, maybe it was better this way. She got ready, same way she did every day. Mostly pretending like nothing had happened at all.
She packed the reports she had on her bag and she headed for the campus. First stop it was Galtier’s office. She didn’t let herself freak out, she waited to see him first.
She gave Galtier the folder with all the reports. He looked at all of them quickly at first, one by one. Marquinhos stood by her while she watched Galtier, her mind constantly running back to the night before.
“that’s all very nice” said Galtier, Taylor smiled. It was all she could do for now. Everything seemed to be going fine for the time being.
“But there is one missing.”
Her eyes widened; she went pale. She hoped to God she wouldn’t hear his name or his number.
“What about number seven?"

Songs That Remind Me Of You: Prologue
Tumblr media
A series in which Jihoon realizes that he loves you a little too late.
pairings: fem!reader x jihoon, hints at fem!reader x seungcheol
word count: 2.1k
genre: angst? unrequited love, high school au to eventual college au, slice of life
chpt summary: the origins of your friendship with jihoon and the origin of his feelings for you
track 0 - Falling For U by Peachy! ft. mxmtoon
♫♪♩♫♪♩
I was hangin' with you and then I realized
I didn't think it was true, I was surprised
When I found out I've fallen for you
♫♪♩♫♪♩
I didn't wanna believe my feelings for you
I didn't wanna believe that I could lose you
If I told you just how I felt
When Jihoon first met you, he thought you were annoying. You were paired together in a chemistry class your sophomore year of high school. Working on this lab with you was torture, you’d always skip a step of the instructions or left a solution over a buntsen burner for too long. More often than not, Jihoon found himself fixing your mistakes.
He complained to his friends about how much of a clutz you were and how he hated the teacher for pairing together. It was only a day later that you changed his mind. You were nearly late for class, rushing into your seat next to his at the last second. You slid a stack of papers stapled together across the table in his direction and his eyes nearly bulged out of his head when he realized that it was your lab report.
“We were supposed to work on this together over the weekend. How’d you manage to write 10 pages on your own in one night?” He quickly scans multiple pages, all of your work was spot on.
You pick at your nails, avoiding eye contact, “I thought I’d make up for messing up the experiment so many times. Didn’t want you to feel like you were doing all the work.”
After that, the chem teacher kept pairing the two of you together for labs, saying something about the two of you working well together. Jihoon helped you get better at staying on task and getting an experiment done while you helped him write a better conclusion to a lab.
With time, Jihoon realized that he actually liked being around you. You never overstepped any boundaries and were hardworking. You were kind but not a push-over. And most importantly, you were the most non judgemental person he had ever met in his life.
Whenever he would tell you about the latest anime episode he had watched, you asked him questions about the lore of the show. If he complained about the band teacher wanting to give his clarinet solo to someone else, you would get annoyed too. You really were the most loyal of his friends.
During junior year, the two of you settled in the same friend group after being put in nearly all the same classes. It wasn’t a big group of friends, there were five of you: Soonyoung (a trumpet player Jihoon met in band), Sana (your friend from middle school), Changkyun (a boy that coincidentally sat near the four of you in your calculus class), Jihoon and you.
The five of you remained a friend group during the rest of your time in high school. You all went to homecoming together, squished into Changkyun’s car. Sana, Changkyun, and you would go to every football game your team had. Not to support the football team, but to watch Jihoon and Soonyoung march during halftime. You would all go see Sana’s dance recitals. Your basement became the go-to location for any get together, any movie night or half-assed birthday parties. Once, when your parents left the state for a wedding, the five of you got drunk together for the first time, drinking a jungle juice made by Changkyuns older brother.
The point was, you were spending a lot of time with each other. And it was one of those nights, in the middle of your hangouts, that he realized he liked you a little bit more than just platonically. Or, well, your friends realized it for him.
You stood up from your seat on the couch and said that you’d be back, your parents needed help with bringing in groceries from the car. They offered to pause the movie and you said you had already seen the movie before so it didn’t matter. They paused it anyway. You disappeared after going up the stairwell.
“What are we gonna do for her birthday?” Sana asked. Your birthday was three weeks from then. Hm, what should Jihoon get you? Last year he hadn’t known you well enough to get you a present but he definitely should this year. And it had to be a good gift, something you would actually use, something that every time you looked at it, you’d think of him.
Soonyoung nudged him, “What are you getting her?”
“I don’t really know yet.”
“Really?” Changkyun asked. “I thought you’d already have everything planned.”
Jihoon’s confused, “Why would I already have everything planned?”
He’s taking a sip of his coke when Changkyun answers, “Well, you have a crush on her.”
Instantly, Jihoon is launched into a coughing fit, having nearly choked on his drink. He clumsily places his drink down and doubles over coughing. Soonyoung and Changkyun are falling over too, but from laughing at him.
“Come on, dude.” Sana chuckles and pats him on the back to try to help him with his coughing. “You’re so obvious about it, you didn’t really think we wouldn’t notice, did you.”
Once the burning in his throat has died down, Jihoon takes another sip of his drink, wanting to avoid talking to his teasing friends.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” He mumbles.
Soonyoung snorts, “You mean you don’t look for her from the stands during every game? Or give her heart eyes when you’re in the same room as her? Or turn red when she calls you Jihoonie?”
The three of them are laughing at him again and Jihoon glances at the stairs, making sure you’re not hearing any of this conversation.
“I'm not even joking, I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
There's a beat of silence as your friends stare at Jihoon, trying to gauge how honest he’s being. A look of disbelief comes over their faces.
“You mean,” Sana softly says, “We figured out you like her before you did?”
Jihoon can feel his ears burning, and he rubs them self consciously. He can’t even bring himself to look at them. He’s thinking about you and how your smile makes him feel lighter and how whenever he makes a joke he’ll make sure it made you laugh. It definitely would make sense if Jihoon had a crush on you.
Suddenly, you're flying down the stairs. You fall over onto the couch between Sana and Jihoon, giggling to yourself like a maniac. You sit up turning to Sana, grabbing onto her shoulders and giving her a shake, “You’ll never believe what just happened!”
“What is it, woman?” Sana exclaims, trying to stop you from shaking her.
“Remember Seungcheol? My neighbor?”
Immediately, the three boys are groaning in protest. Of course they know about Seungcheol, you only talk about him every single time the opportunity presents itself.
Seungcheol is a year older than you, currently the varsity captain of the wrestling team. After he moved into the house next to yours at the beginning of the year, all you ever have to say about him is oh, his muscles are so big. Jihoon, look at his hair, it looks so soft. Oh my god, I think he was looking at me. Jihoon wasn’t sure why he disliked Seungcheol when he actually was a kind person, but now he’s able to realize that it’s due to jealousy. The other boys are just sick of hearing you gush over a guy that doesn’t give you the time of day. Sana is the only one of your friends willing to hear you out on this absurd crush.
“What about Seungcheol?” Sana asks you.
“He pulled up to his house while we were unloading groceries and he came over to help–”  “So he did one nice thing.” Soonyoung interrupts you.
“Shut up, Soon! He’s always nice, but that isn’t the point.”
Huh, the pout on your face is sort of cute, Jihoon thinks.
“Anyways, when we finished, he asked to talk to me outside, and he asked me out!”
You’re squealing in excitement again, oblivious to the looks of terror and sympathy that Jihoons friends are sending him. He feels his heart sink.
Maybe it was better to stay unaware of his feelings, it’s not like he had a chance anyways. Still, he put on a fake smile like the rest of his friends.
“Oh my god!” Sana says. “That's so exciting!”
Soon enough, you’re all finishing up the movie, even if he can’t seem to focus on the screen. Seungcheol was a good guy, he should be happy for you. This was something that you had been wanting for a while and it was finally happening. Jihoon refused to be the person to ruin that for you. When the movie is over and Changkyun is driving everyone else back home, there's a tense silence.
Soonyoung clears his throat, nudging Jihoons foot with his own from the backseat, “They barely know anything about each other, maybe this is just a fling. It’ll pass.”
Changkyun looks at the two from the rearview mirror, “Yea, Seungcheol barely even looked at her before this. It’s kind of weird that he just asked her out.”
“Guys stop,” Sana says. She doesn’t turn to look at the boys in the car, instead looking outside through the passenger window. “I know we feel bad for Jihoon, but that’s not fair to her. She likes Seungcheol a lot, he could be her first boyfriend. It’s a big deal, so let's not ruin it for her.”
Jihoon sighs, “Right. Up until today, I didn’t even realize how much I like her… let's just pretend that conversation didn’t happen.”
The car pulls up in front of his house. He hurriedly unbuckles his seatbelt and leaves the car. He’s sniffling when he makes it to his room, flopping onto his bed. Part of him hopes you realize Seungcheol isn’t what you thought he’d be like and you’ll forget about him, but another part of him feels disgusting for thinking that.
A week later, you’re telling them all about how amazing your bowling date with Seungcheol went. He paid for everything and didn’t make you feel bad for being terrible at bowling. He wasn’t trying to get into your pants and was making genuine questions. He surprised you with flowers at the end of your date and asked when he could take you on another date. You went on a lot more dates after that, there was a picnic date, a trip to the movie theater, a corn maze.
On your birthday, Sana invited him to your party. Jihoon wasn’t sure what to get you, especially now that he had realized he liked you. He ended up making you a playlist and then burning it onto a CD. But at your party, Seungcheol surprised everyone by showing up with a guitar. He sang you a sweet love song in front of everyone, winning over all of your friends. Jihoon ended up hiding his CD, now embarrassed to give it to you. He couldn’t sing you a song the way Seungcheol did. He didn’t make you hide your face timidly or smile that big. When Sana asked him what he had gotten you, Jihoon said that his gift hadn’t arrived in time and would give it to you a little later.
Now, at the end of the school year, the CD he made for you is sitting on his desk, waiting for the opportunity to give it to you without it feeling like he was trying to steal you from Seungcheol.
The five of you attend the senior graduation. You had told your friends that you were feeling insecure about your relationship, how even though it had been a couple months of going out, Seungcheol hasn't asked you to be his girlfriend. And that he probably wouldn’t since he would be leaving for college. Still, you wanted to support him, so you showed up to the graduation with gifts to give him after the ceremony. To everyone’s amazement, he was the one to surprise you by asking you to be his girlfriend during his graduation party.
As Jihoon watched the romance between you and Seungcheol develop, he couldn’t help but feel many emotions. He loved the happiness that radiated from your smile and the twinkle in your eye whenever you were with him. But at the same time, he couldn’t help the jealousy from creeping in, wishing it was him instead of Seungcheol every time he’d catch the two of you hugging or kissing. He had only recently come to terms with his feelings but had no choice but to watch from the sidelines. He wasn't even upset with Seungcheol anymore, having finally gotten the chance to know him and realizing that he really was a good boyfriend.
Jihoon was determined to be a supportive friend, even if it meant keeping his feeling hidden. He still held onto the CD he created for your birthday, a reminder of his unrequited feelings. For now, he knew the timing wasn’t right to confess his feelings. But maybe one day, the stars would align, and the right moment would present itself.
After junior year ended, and you and Seungcheol officially became a couple, Jihoon’s heart carried a bittersweet melody. The CD, filled with songs that spoke about his feelings, remained on his desk, waiting for the day he could give it to you.

Love at first sight (Ella Toone x Reader)
Tumblr media
When you first met Ella your breath caught in your throat, she was gorgeous and turns out incredibly funny.
Ella charmed you faster than anyone else ever had and since that day all you could think about was her.
You sort of knew Leah had a plan because she had rounded up a bunch of girls and next thing you knew you were inside the lioness dressing room getting introduced to all these players you already knew.
You found it extra weird when Beth suddenly started flirting with you hard, you blushed but come on it was Beth Mead. As you were about to question your best friend all thoughts left your mind as she came up to you.
Her stupid fucking Manchester accent, that stupid fucking smile, her stupid fucking pretty eyes, you were stupidly fucked. Ella had you wrapped around her pretty little finger and there was absolutely nothing anyone could do about it.
You didn’t even notice the rest of the girls leave as you laughed at one of Ella’s jokes, you stayed in the dressing room for a few more minutes before realising it was empty and the team bus had left.
You sighed knowing that this was exactly Leah’s plan. You felt embarrassed standing next to the taller girl, god you were going to kill Leah.
That was until Ella turned around to face you with that smile, “This actually couldn’t be more perfect.” You gave her a confused look before she grabbed your hand and pulled you to the nearest bus station.
She took you into London city and brought you to one of her favourite cafès ever. Ella told you all about her dreams of becoming a footballer and playing for Manchester United and how City was just hopefully her ticket to the big leagues.
You told her all about acting and the incredible experiences you’ve been able to have because of your job, the unofficial date lasted for hours as you both walked around the city before Ella got a text from her teammates that curfew was in a half an hour.
Ella’s smile faded knowing that she would in fact have to say goodbye to you, in the short few hours she has gotten to know you she’s one hundred percent fell head over heels.
You gave her a reassuring smile before she walked you back to where you lived with Leah and Jordan. You had the house to yourself for the week as the two footballers were currently at camp.
“I had a great time, you know.” You lightly smacked her arm giggling, “Don’t sound so surprised!” Ella put her hands up in mock defence as you both slow to a stop outside of your house.
“So..” Ella starts before trailing off, she thinks about what she wants to say but can’t find anything. “Thank you, Ella. I had a really good time too.” Ella gives you a relieved smile before brining you in for a hug.
The hug lasts way to long to be a friendly hug and you both know it, as you slowly pull away your breath hitches as your face to face with her.
She slowly bring her hand up to your face and tucks a piece of hair behind your ear, “Sorry…your hair was in your face…thought I should move it so I could see you better.”
Suddenly your leaning into her, feeling her warm breath on your lips as your noses brush, you close your eyes in anticipation until a loud buzzing breaks you both out of your bliss.
You hear Ella grumble curse words and can’t help but giggle lightly as she fishes her phone out of her pocket, Ella answers and you step away to give her some privacy.
“….yeah, I’m on my way…No!…I know…you don’t have to remind me….Less…okay….I’m coming…yes…I love you too…bye.”
Ella huffs before giving you an apologetic smile, “That was the girls, they need me back.” You nod and give her a soft smile of your own before bidding her a good night.
She does the same and hesitantly turns around, she slowly walks away as you fiddle with your keys. You quickly remember something, “Wait!” Ella whips around so fast she nearly slips on ice as she speed walks back to you.
You giggle before handing her your phone, she enters her digits in quickly before ringing herself making sure she has your number saved.
You lean up to give Ella a soft kiss on her cold cheek, she blushed before squeezing your hand, “I’ll text you.” You nod, “You fucking better” Ella laughs and turns around but not before giving you one more glance trying to commit you to memory.
That night as your cuddled up in bed with a warm cup of tea, you squeal to your best friend about how everything went as Leah smugly points out how you should be thanking her.
Meanwhile Ella was doing the exact same as she gave Alessia the full rundown, sighing every time she thought about you.
You really did need to thank Leah.
A/n: plenty more to come!!

the three musketeers II Caroline Graham Hansen x Reader
Tumblr media
masterlist I word count: 2227
a/n: hi, it's based off this request here, we hope you enjoy it.
It was an important match day for Caroline Graham Hansen’s club but for now you and your lover lay peacefully asleep in your bed. Considering your last relationship with the father of your child ended in disaster being together with her felt like a save haven.
The Norwegian and you were completely opposite characters but because the love you had for each other it worked out great. Light steps signalled that your daughter Maya was in your bedroom now.
“Wake up mamis, today’s game day!”, she yelled excitedly into your and your girlfriend’s ear.
With a glance at your phone clock, you turned around to her, muttering softly: “Love, it’s way too early. You’ve to let Caro sleep.”
“But the sun is already out.”, your child pouted while pointing at the window.
Meanwhile, Caroline started to speak, her voice still heavy with sleep:” Coffee.”
“I’ll make you some.”, you promised her.
Eyes still closed the forward hold you back smiling: ”Thanks, don’t forget Mayas hot chocolate, kjaerste.”
“I’d never.”, you grinned at her.
“Caro, you’re awake!”, Maya noticed happily, wrapping her arms around the tall woman for a hug.
“Yes, I am. Hard to keep sleeping with you jumping on the bed.”, Caroline groaned as she hid her face in the little girl’s hair.
She gave her an apologetic look:” Oh, sorry. I’m just so excited.”
“Excited to walk on the pitch with me later today?”, Caroline asked her, it warmed the Norwegians heart to see the child being so thrilled to go to a game because it reminded her that she was once just like her.
You returned with an amused smile on your lips as the hot beverages were waiting to be ready:” She’s. Maya told everyone in kindergarten about it.”
“Oh, she did?”, Caroline lifted her eyebrow in surprise.
Immediately Mayas cheeks turned red:” Yes.”
“They must all be jealous.”, the Barcelona player winked at her.
“They’re”, with a shy smile your daughter added, Caro, can I wear one of your scrunchies?”
“How about we get you dressed first and after that, you can pick out a scrunchie.”, the Norwegian suggested warmly.
“Okay.”
“Come on.”, with these words Caroline helped the little girl out of bed who was quickly running into the direction of your bathroom.
Only a few minutes later you announced:” She’s ready.”
“Go pick your scrunchie.”, the football player whispered. Watching that wholesome scene between them you could feel your heart melting.
Deeply concentrated Maya touched each hairband individually before lifting the one into the air which she chose to wear:” I like the purple one.”
“Want me to put it in your hair or do you want to wear it on your wrist?”, Caroline wanted to know from the girl.
For a second she thought about it before replying:” Hmm.. I want to wear it like you do.”
“Okay, come here.”, your girlfriend chuckled while she put Maya’s hair into a ponytail.
“It looks adorable.”, you mumbled in awe at the sight of them with their identical hairstyles in front of you.
Maya tilted her head from side to side, her tiny ponytail bobbing with every movement.
Caroline held out her hand to your daughter, who happily grabbed it: “Let’s go and get your hot chocolate. I really need some coffee.“
Your girlfriend flashed you a grin as they walked past you into the kitchen.
You followed with a smile on your lips: “It’s all ready.“
Caroline sat Maya onto her chair. A routine that has become established in the past few months.
You watched as Caroline measured the temperature of the hot chocolate with her finger before handing the colourful plastic cup to your daughter, making sure she would not burn herself while drinking. This small gesture made your heart flutter for a moment.
Caroline then grabbed her own cup of coffee and pressed a quick kiss to your cheek: “Thank you.“
“You’re welcome, mi amor.“, you replied cheerfully.
You girlfriends cheeks turned slightly red. She still had not gotten used to the pet names.
“Caro’s blushing!“, Maya yelled out, followed by a loud giggle.
The football player grimaced: “I’m not.“
“Oh, or did Miss Norway forget her sunscreen before training?“, you teased her.
“Oh, shut up!“, she laughed, shaking her head.
“No.“
“No?!“, she repeated with feigned offense.
You smirked at her: “Make me.“
“I’ll.“
“I’m waiting.“, you laughed as Caroline pulled you towards her. Just as your lips were about to meet, a tiny hand pushed your face away from your girlfriends.
“No, hurry. We don’t want to be late.“, Maya protested.
Caroline rolled her eyes: “Maya.“
You shrugged: “Well, you heard her…“
“Fine.“
With a wink, you leaned over to whisper so only Caroline could hear it: “You know she’ll be very tired after the game today. So I guess we can continue later.“
“We’ll see about that. Either she’s tired or she’s bouncing off the walls after the game.“, she replied, looking over at your daughter.
“Like this morning.“, you added with a laugh.
“Typical.“
“Time to go!“, Maya interrupted you again impatiently.
Caroline sighed before picking her up: “Yes, calm down.“
Arrived at the stadium at the same time as the other players. As Ingrid caught sight of your daughter, she dropped her bag and squatted down with her arms wide open: “Maya, min lille!“
Without hesitation she ran into her arms: “Ingrid, Mapi!“
“There’s our ice princess Caro.“, Mapi laughed.
Caroline shook her head: “Would you please leave my mascot alone.“
“But she’s so cute!“, Ingrid pouted.
“She’s not here for you.“
You smiled to yourself. Your daughter was obviously in good hands here.
Mapi gave you a wink before linking arms with you to walk together towards the stands.
Meanwhile Alexia smirked at the little girl:” Maya, who’s your favourite player?”
“Uhm..”, she started, clearly afraid to give a wrong answer to the captains question.
Seeing her this distressed the blonde reassured her:” It’s okay, you don’t to answer it.”
“Okay, I like you all.”, she replied in an honest tone.
“That’s a great reply, now we need to get in line though, the game is about to start.”, Ingrid intervened smiling.
“Caro?”, Maya pulled at the taller woman’s jacket.
With a warm smile Caroline looked down to her:” Yes?”
“Can I hold your hand?”, the girl asked nervously.
“Of course you can. Ready Maya?”, the Norwegian wanted to know from your daughter, while taking her small hand into hers.
“Ready. Are you?”, Maya nodded.
“Yes, I’m ready too.”, as they walked into the stadium, the Barcelona player pointed into the direction where you and Mapi were sitting in the stands, do you see, mami? She’s over there.”
Following Carolines Finger, the girls face lit up once she spotted you:” Yes!”
“Let’s wave at her so she knows that we’re seeing her.”, the Norwegian suggested before they waved at you together. Only a moment later it was time for Maya to leave the pitch but before she was doing that, your daughter gave the Barcelona player a quick hug.
With the help of one of the staff members, the girl quickly found Mapi and you, looking overjoyed:” Hi, mum.”
“Maya, hi, did you enjoy walking out with Caro?”, you questioned her.
“Mami, that was so cool, so many people and Caro wasn’t nervous at all.”, Maya answered enthusiastically.
Grinning Mapi commented on your daughter’s story:” Oh, she’s a bit nervous, trust me. Caro wants to perform well when her girls are watching.”
“Really?”, the girl glanced at the defender. She paused for a second before continuing:” Are Mami and I her girls?”
“Yes, you two are her girls.”, the Spanish woman confirmed.
Beaming Maya told her:” I like that.” You couldn’t be happier about such a declaration from your daughter, who was so welcoming toward your girlfriend.
After the match Carolina saw how Irene was getting her son to celebrate the glorious win, which made her want to do the same. Smiling she walked to the place you both were standing:” Maya, do you want to come down here.”
“Can I, mami?”, your daughter turned around to expectantly look at you.
“Sure.”, you responded encouragingly.
This was enough for Maya who ran quickly on to the pitch into the open arms of your girlfriend who was chuckling out loud:” Look at you, walking around here like a professional.”
“Mateo still needs a little practice.”, the girl observed laughing.
“He’s still small.”, Caroline reminded her.
“Yeah, tiny.”
“Yes, true.”, the Norwegian agreed.
“Maya, Mateo wants to say hi to you.”, Irene interrupted their talk in a kind voice.
“Mateo, hi.”, Maya greeted the smaller boy politely.
Watching this scene unfold, Ingrid chirmed:” Cuties.”
“Look at them hugging.”, Mateos mum hummed.
“That’s him telling you welcome to the Barca family.”, Mariona explained to your daughter.
Playfully Caroline wrinkled her nose:” This is disgustingly cute.”
Irene looked at her and slightly offended repeated: “Disgustingly?“
“You know Caro, Irene.“, Ingrid laughed.
“I thought things would get better now that she’s a mum too.“, Irene joked.
While you walked towards them to join them on the field, you recognized that the smile had disappeared from your girlfriends face.
You politely smiled at the other players and put a hand on Carolines arm: “She’s trying.“
“Mami?“ Mayas voice called.
You looked down at where she was pulling at the hem of your shirt: “Yes?“
“When can we go home?“ The toddler rubbed at her eyes, a clear sign that she was getting tired.
Before you could answer, Caroline scooped her up into her arms: “We can go now.“
“Okay.“, she mumbled into her chest.
Even though the car ride home was short, Maya barely managed to stay awake. You had watched her eyes close in the rearview mirror. As soon as you stopped the car, Caroline turned towards your daughter: “Tired, Maya?“
“No!“, she murmured, her eyes still closed.
Caroline chuckled: “I can tell.“
She got out of the car before picking up Maya from her seat and carrying her inside.
“No problem, she can have a nap while I’m starting to cook.“, you suggested while you walked inside the house together.
Caroline nodded once: “I’ll bring her to bed.“
“Thank you.“ You leaned over to press a gentle kiss to your daughters forehead. She was now fully asleep in your girlfriends arms.
You started cooking pasta while Caroline left with Maya. It was not the first time that she tucked your daughter in, but it still made you feel warm inside.
A sheet of paper on the kitchen table caught your attention, right as you were about to start with the sauce.
You wiped your hands on a dish towel and skimmed over the document.
The words on the first few lines made your heart skip a beat but you had to suppress a gasp as you saw Carolines signature on it.
Caroline returned into the kitchen in that exact moment, you held up the paper and whispered: “What is that?“
Your girlfriend bit her lip, nervous energy was radiating off of her.
She took a deep breath before answering with an unusually shaky voice: “I… uhm… I thought if we want this to be something longterm, we should be a family on paper too.“
There was nothing you could do. Your eyes immediately welled up with tears. You put the adoption papers back on the table and walked towards your girlfriend: “Caro, this means a lot… you know that?“
“You know, we can just throw this in the trash if you don’t want this.“, she started but you pulled her towards you into a hug.
“No, I want this.“, you sniffed. Tears ran down your cheeks, moved by this beautiful gesture.
“You do?“
You nodded, lifting your head to meet Carolines eyes: “Yes, I’m very sure and so is Maya. Her face lit up when Mapi called me and her your girls.“
“We still should ask if she wants that too.”, your girlfriend thought out loud.
“Maybe after we had dinner?”, you suggested.
“Yes.”
Both of you were nervous when it came to finally asking your daughter the important question. Unlike Maya who looked serious between Caroline and you:” So, what did you want to ask me?”
“She sounds like she’s the mum and we’re the children.”, the Norwegian commented amused.
“She does.”, you admitted laughing, feeling the tension release a bit from your body.
The football player turned her head to your child, sounding earnest:” Maya, I have an important question for you, what would you think if I officially became your mum too?”
“Would you?”, Maya responded big eyed while she made her way to Caroline.
“I’d love to.”, your girlfriend replied seriously, feeling her eyes getting slightly wet by how moved the little girl and she herself was.
Your daughter went on to hug her:” Me too, mum.”
Overjoyed Caroline looked up to you, gesturing with her hands that you should join them:” Come here. I love you, my girls.”
“Are we still the three musketeers?”, Maya asked anxiously.
Pressing a kiss to her forehead, the football player reassured her:” Of course, we’re.”
“All for one.”, you and your girlfriend began beaming.
“And one for all.”, the little girl cheered, knowing deep inside that she could count on her two mums in whatever the future would hold for you three as a family.

Drawing
Status: DONE ✨ Words: 908 Pronouns: She/her A/N: Football AU ==============================================================
The bright field lights shone on the field as I walked into the stadium. Fashionly is late as always. The score currently showed that SBI was ahead by 7 points. I quickly made my way over to the side bleachers where fewer people sat. Correction there where only one college-aged guy and a high schooler. they were sitting on the first row of bleachers painting each other's nails. One of the boys waved to me. I recognized him from one of my classes, Karl maybe. I started to walk up the bleachers my sketchbook still in my arms after giving him a small smile. 'I am only here for the assignment' I reminded myself. As soon as I sat down the bell went off starting halftime. I opened my sketchbook to get started on the drawing. "Uhm... (Y/N) right?" The same boy who sat at the end of the bleachers now stood right in front of me. "Yeah? Your Karl right?" I asked the guy. His face lit up with a smile. "Yeah! And that's Ranboo he guessed behind his back to the freakishly tall high schooler. "Would you mind if we sat next to you?" Karl asked. "Sure you can..." I told the boys. Karl ran down the bleachers and grabbed his backpack and nail polish. He walked back up Ranboo following him. I went back to sketching the people onto the field. A good hour later I felt a tap on my shoulder. It was Karl. "Could I... I... Uhm... CouldIpaintyournails?" his words came out in a blur. I set my half-done sketchbook to the side and turned to Karl. I put my hands out a lopsided smile on my face. He took the queue, grabbed one of my hands, and grabbed a bright shade of purple and black nail polish. The colors were the color of the SMP college football jersey. While sitting there I noticed Karl was wearing the jerseys the people on the field were wearing. "You didn't tell me you played," I questioned Karl who sat in front of me focusing on my nails. "Yeah, I guess I do. I am out for a sprained ankle for the next two weeks" he said sticking out his bad ankle," he said laughing a little. Ranboo sat next to me jumping up when his team- the SBI School district got a little closer to a touchdown. "THE GAME'S ALMOST OVER TOMMY! RUN AS YOU'VE NEVER RUN BEFORE TOMMY!" Ranboo yelled over the crowd quite a few people staring at him. SMP was ahead by 7 points. Just then Callahan broke out of the group of boys jumping on Tommy. Ranboo's mouth fell agape as he watched his friend get pulled to the ground as the buzzer went off. The black-clad side of the bleachers jumped screaming out and hugging their neighbors. Karl jumped up shouting and started to run down the bleachers the best he could and toward the field to celebrate with his team. Ranboo just started screaming profanity into the thin night air. Soon, the bleachers cleared out to go celebrate the win against SBI. Expect the football team. "HEY, (Y/N)! YEAH, YOU ART NERD!" my head jerked up from my sketchbook and found the source of the all too familiar voice. My ex-the-football-captain-grade-cheater-jerk, Dream. The group of overly arrogant football players now stood at the foot of the bleachers. "How's a single life going?" Dream asked a smirk on his face. Karl stood behind him looking quite guilty. He glimpsed up and mouthed a silent sorry to you. Before Dream could throw any more insults at you a tall male walked up behind Dream and grabbed the back of his jersey. "What is happening here, Dream?" the male asked in a monotone voice. All the football players took a step back except for Dream who stood ridged in his place.       "No-nothing Techno," Dream stammered tripping over his words. Karl turned and broke away from his team and ran up the bleachers and clasping onto my waist. Ranboo now stood behind you glaring daggers at Dream.       "Good, now scram," growled at the captain of the football team allowing him to run toward a group of girls at the entrance his group of goons followed him beside Karl.       "Ranboo? She good?" Techno shouted up from the bottom of the bleachers.       Ranboo looked down at me. "You good?" he asked unrest in the back of his eyes. I looked back up at them and smiled up at Ranboo.       "All good," I piped. Ranboo turned to Techno and gave him a thumbs up. Karl who was still holding on to my waist finally let go.       "Ranboo! The team wants to get Freddy's come on!" Techno shouted from where he still stood after he threatened Dream away. Ranboo's face broke into a smile. He scribbled something onto a lilac sticky note before sticking it to my face and taking the steps two at a time to get to the walkway and outside the stadium with Techno on his tail. I reached up to my face and pulled off the sticky note. On it was two phone numbers. One had 'Ranbo' above it.  The other had a note         ' Techno talks about you all the time I am doing him a favor ' above the second set of numbers. Karl stood next to you reading over your shoulder.       "(y/n)'s got a date!" Karl declared in a sing-song voice.

I gotta say, as much as I normally sympathize more with Reo, reading chapter 13 of epinagi and rereading the main manga at the same time makes me feel for Nagi, too.
Seeing just how often Nagi's thoughts go to Reo, his reasons for snapping at him after the 3v3 makes so much more sense. In Nagi's narration, it's obvious that he holds a lot of respect to Reo as a player, other than a friend. Every time he faces a challenging opponent or sees a great play, his mind always goes to him. When he's not wishing to show Reo all these amazing things, he's reminding himself and others that they must keep challenging strong opponents to justify having left Reo behind. One way or another, their promise is always very present in his mind, and he's giving it his all to make it come true.
But then they run into each other in the baths and Reo is acting suddenly cold. He doesn't want to hear about Nagi's efforts, and he calls him a rival. It would be so easy to take offense to that, to assume—like Reo did—that the other has forgotten about their promise. But it's not here that Nagi's temper snaps. Instead, he takes it in stride, and actually looks kind of fired up for the chance of facing a Reo who will go all out. After all, Nagi understand wanting to take on strong guys, and through this and other subtle details, it's shown that in his mind Reo is still very much one of them. I'd say that he perceives Reo as an equal, if not strictly a teammate at present. This is especially clear when Nagi's first impulse is to still pick him as his first choice when they win. We've established that Nagi doesn't let sentimentality get in the way of having the best shot at achieving his dream (think of the pep talk he gives to Bachira about leaving him behind if he doesn't step up even if he and Isagi are close). So, all of this to say: Nagi speaks with his actions, and he chooses Reo for Reo's skills, not for his attachment to him as a friend. He respects him.
But he respects their dream more, in the end. Just like how he left with Isagi not by any fault of Reo's own, but to examine his own drive for football, Nagi once again makes the choice that would best result in bettering his plays. Not because he doesn't care, but because he's that serious about it, actually.
Again, Reo doesn't make the cut not because he lacks skills, but because his playstyle isn't compatible with the way Nagi's team is evolving. Reo would bring them balance because he's skilled and charismatic enough to singlehandedly whip up their mismatched chaos into a proper team. But being a team would make them worse players individually, and Nagi has enough maturity to know that's a step back for his own skills, not one forward. Not a single moment has passed by so far where he hasn't been putting his all towards fulfilling his end of the promise, or one where he hasn't had full faith in Reo in turn.
And then Reo, who has acted cold and standoffish all this time for seemingly no reason... Reo, who is so skilled but wants to be picked even if it means losing and possibly flunking out of the program, their best chance to get closer to the world cup... The same guy who swore they'd be best in the world, but whose efforts only stopped at winning in the first selection...
that Reo goes and accuses him of not giving a shit about their promise to each other.
I think I would've snapped back too

Calm Me Down.
florence pugh x reader
summary: you have a panic attack and need to be comforted by someone you love
words: 1333
warnings: extremely bad panic attack
notes: this has been swirling around in my head recently, partly because i feel like i’m on a downward spiral and partly because of the football. i’m on holiday right now and it’s nearly two in the morning for me, and i started writing this at one. i didn’t want to put a downer on my mood but i needed to write this.
it’s not in the style i usually write in because it’s rushed and short and just a collection of mismatched thoughts, but it was very comforting to put how i was feeling into words.

Tumblr media
You should’ve scored the moment you were passed the ball.
Tensions are high.
You should’ve scored.
Y/n L/n is looking disheartened. She’s one of those players who can get in her head a little bit.
Toone scores perfectly, seamlessly. It eats at you that it could’ve been 2-0, though you celebrate with your team and squeeze her tight. Your captain nods at you. She thinks you lose focus sometimes, tunnelling into everything negative you’ve done.
You manage to pull your socks up and continue playing.
The ball feels good on your feet, like it’s always done. You remind yourself why you’re here and how you’re here. It’s a clear run, you can do it.
She’s quick on her feet, she is.
You sprint, weightless. You are going to score.
Something makes contact with your legs, sliding through you, tripping you up. You fall forwards, a lurching, jerking movement, that lands you on your face.
Flo winces from the stands. She hates watching you get hurt.
Nasty trip up from Germany! Free kick given to England.
Someone hauls you up, pats you on the back. You smile because you know you’re on camera, and set up to take it, keeping your eyes on the goal in front of you.
But then it all stops. Goes silent. Rushes back into you. Overtakes you.
Your hands shake; big shakes, obvious shakes. Everyone is watching you, you realise.
“Y/n?” You stumble away from the ball, approaching your teammate who meets you more than you can meet her. She speaks your name a few more times, wondering if you’ve suddenly been shot by a dart that sedates the villain in movies. You struggle to breathe, heart ringing and thrumming and screaming at you to fucking wait a minute for it to catch up. It tells you (or rather, your brain tells you) that it’s going to die any minute; just give out. You may be fit and healthy and young, but you feel like you are surely about to die.
We have a lack of commotion on the pitch right now. Captain Leah Williamson has called for the medical team, but we have some booing from the German fans. I’m not sure who Medical is for — it seems that L/n and Williamson are having a chat.
You shake your head, barely able to do so, when the medic asks you what’s wrong. It doesn’t tell him much, but you start to lose your breath, forgetting how to get it back again. Your body attempts short, ragged intakes of oxygen, but your eyes become too aware of the number of people staring at you for you to gain anything good from it.
He motions for Leah to take a step back; everyone else copies. The rest of the team stay where they are, recognising the fear in your face. Though you are convinced your heart is going to stop beating at any minute now, they realise you’re having a panic attack.
“Y/n, we’re going to help you get off. Can you move?” Your hearing cuts back in, and you attempt to block out the sounds of your gasping.
Space and time are closing in on you, and you are trapped.
I can see a worried Sarina pacing the sidelines as Y/n L/n is talking to a medic.
It takes most of your energy to push out, “I think I’m going to die,” before you collapse in the medic’s grip as he helps you off. He thinks you’d rather walk yourself to the technical area.
Your knees buckle as soon as you’re expected to stand on your own, and you hit the ground not caring about anything other than the knives stabbing your chest, burning and digging into your flesh. You curl up to protect yourself, but everything is internal and it ends up making you feel trapped.
Sarina kneels beside you quickly, doing the most she can while they fetch your girlfriend from her seat with your family.
It looks like L/n is having some kind of fit on the sidelines.
You sob loudly, easily heard over the hushed stadium. You want every single thought you’ve ever thought about to go away. Leave you alone. Your head almost thrashes against a medic’s shoe as you shake. Violently.
Yet to you it feels two thousand miles away, the chaos that you can feel. While you’re in excruciating pain, you’re also just floating. It’s real. It isn’t real. You can’t decide.
“Where is Florence?” Sarina has to stay calm, just in case you can hear her.
Fucking hell you’re in pain. Your head is throbbing, unforgivingly so, and it’s white hot and blazing. The sun has seeped into your veins and burned through your body; your nerves explode into daggers.
And you’re sweating like you really are writhing in the sun’s core.
The figure you see is… Okay, that’s L/n’s girlfriend who’s currently sitting her up against what looks like a pile of kit bags. She looks familiar because that is indeed Amy March and the main character from Midsommar.
Your vision has blurred by the time Florence gets to you, but she doesn’t care if you don’t know who she is. “I’m right here,” she says firmly, unscrewing the lid of a water bottle and holding it to your lips. “Y/n, I’m right here, and I’m not going anywhere.”
You get dizzier and dizzier. It feels like your sight has begun to tilt and wobble.
You slump against the hint of familiarity; the warmth of a woman you definitely know.
Your throat burns as you desperately catch a breath that seems to never have been there to begin with.
She holds the bottle to your lips as you realise it’s Flo. You grip her free hand so tightly that it goes red, but she’s not going to notice because you’re shaking and then sprawling over her when she sits beside you.
The game has resumed. Bronze takes the kick instead.
Flo cradles your body, hoping you’re slowly regaining control of it.
We have confirmation that Y/n L/n suffered a major panic attack just now. L/n has talked about her struggles with anxiety related to playing before, but I don’t think anyone here tonight was expecting to witness such a distressing sight.
Your body has primed itself for a danger that’s not really there, but her touch seems to become the definition of safety. She rocks you back and forth while Russo tries to hold in her anger at the cameras pointing at you. She can’t stop herself from going up to a few and asking if they could film the game instead, not her friend who is clearly in crisis.
The pins and needles in your hands settle like someone plucked them all out, and Flo places one of your wounded palms against her chest, against the beating of her heart.
It’s steady.
It’s calm.
It’s just what makes you love her. Her heart. Her rhythm.
Your breathing finds its beat alongside Flo’s, and you lean against her fully. She sighs as you bring her arms round your front, pressing your face into her neck to shut out everything else.
“I love you,” you whisper. She’s okay with her body being soaked by your tears if it means she is always the first person you run to when your thoughts become a tsunami of overwhelmingness.
A camera is obviously zooming in on you two.
Florence Pugh has calmed her girlfriend down.
Its lens peers at the two of you as you stop yourself from falling asleep on her. She kisses your shoulder.
I think we all saw that glint of a diamond on Pugh’s finger.
“Do you think everyone can see my ring?” she asks you quietly, feeling your strained laughter as you shake softly on top of her. “We have a way of finding odd publicity.”
I stand corrected. Florence Pugh has calmed her fiancée down.

this is so cute
It started on the campsite's football field. Here she was called Per because she had her short hair cut. The young Harder believed the national team was reserved for men.
A few years later, she arranged an agreement with FC Midtjylland, so she could train with the Superliga team's U17 boys in the hunt to get better.
The extra work later resulted in more than 130 international matches, a successful career abroad and the title of the world's most expensive football player.
And on Tuesday, she scored the decisive goal in the victory against Finland, which breathed new life into Denmark's European Championship dreams, before the decisive group match against Spain on Saturday.
DR Sporten has asked Pernille Harder's parents, after-school friend, national team colleague and boyfriend how they remember Harder before she became a superstar:
Annie Harder and Mogens Harder, Pernille Harder's parents.
- The talent was obvious from an early age. Do you not agree, Mogens? Yes, he nods, says Annie Harder.
- She is always looking for challenges. She even arranged morning training with the U17 boys from FC Midtjylland. The rest of us were not involved, and that has always been the case, says Mogens Harder.
- But when you have to train so much, you can not do everything 100 percent. I once asked her if she would rather have 9 in German or be well prepared for the U18 World Cup in New Zealand? Football is an experience of a lifetime - school should probably go well, says the mother.
- Now it sounds as if she was an adult as a 12-year-old. She has also just been a kid, a gunpowder owl, played with lego, had fucking fun and such. But if there was something she thought was unfair, she went all in, says Annie Harder.
- Pernille has played a huge role in the development of women's football. Partly with its performance and high level. Partly with his eternal belief that there was a future for women in the sport. It has been amazing and touching to follow her and the national team. We are all so proud, says Mogens Harder.
Anne Sofie Hjort, psychologist and former professional handball player. Attended the after-school Idrætsskolerne Ikast with Pernille Harder in 2008/2009.
- We met late in the year on a ski holiday , where we were just bad on the slopes and found each other in it. We fell in love because Pernille, in addition to being skilled and focused, is also someone I can always laugh with. She is very down to earth and lovely Jutlandic.
- We were just distracted and had fun with everything but sports. Even then, she laid the foundation stones for her shuffle moves (dance steps, ed. ).
- As I remember it, she was also one of the best back then. She had a good portion of talent, but was at least as focused. She knew it would take a lot of training and opting out to drive it to something big.
- Sportingly, it does not occur to me that she has come this far. But conversely, she is also my good friend Pernille from Ikast, so it's pretty crazy to think about what it developed into.
Magdalena Eriksson, professional football player in Chelsea and Swedish national team player. Has been dating Pernille Harder since 2014.
- When it comes to football, everything is under control, but when it comes to other things, Pernille is quite forgetful.
- She has one job at home, and that is to go out with the garbage. At the end of the week there is always a mountain of rubbish and you have to look for a place to put your things because she is waiting until the last minute to clean up. I often have to remind her of that.
- When Pernille and I grew up, there were no gay athletes we could look up to, find security with and make us think it's okay to be gay . We are very conscious of using our platform as football players. There are many who listen to us and we can make a difference.
- Pernille is very generous and caring. She has strong values and views when it comes to being a role model. She is comfortable in the role and is not afraid to be herself. It's very inspiring.
