Season 4 - Iris
So, this one is going to cover the topic of Iris West-Allen and discuss some the the controversy surrounding her character this season. I want to say right now that I love Iris and I will always love Iris but that I will be fully honest with my opinions on her this season. I would also like to take a moment and remind everyone that Candice Patton are completely seperate from eachother and aby issues you have with that character are not the fault of her unless the issue was bad acting (which I don't believe is very likely either but everyone has theor opinions). So yeah. Just covering some of that out of the gate.
We Are The Flash. Ok, so this is relating to Iris obviously but my problem with this isn't actually an issue with her character. So, when I saw it in the promo I loved it but in the episode I hated it. I thought that it should have encompassed the whole team and not just Barry and Iris. Not that Barry and Iris aren't a team of their own and Iris was right about their engagement (and later, marriage) changing how they do things. That being said I really think that Flash is more than just them and that was my problem with it. I also think they overused it. Like, if you like it that's fine but there is a point when something is being overused. It is not the only time in the season they have run a joke, gag, or catchphrase into the ground so this is not an isolated incident. I feel like they could have some up with something better or just avoided it altogether and just finished the conversation normally. But I do understand why they did it and it makes sense, I just wish it had worked out differently.
Run, Iris, Run. I knoe that most of the controversy about this episode was because people (for some reason I don't understand) believed that this would be long term. I would not have wanted that because (as the episode explored) it's not who Iris is. I believe she would make a great long term superhero if she had her own powers but it was becauss she had Barry's powers and she knew that they belonged with him which is why the episode worked. I meantioned before that it was a fun and interesting episode and I think that what they did with it was actually the beginning of some major (and natural) character developement that she really needed.
Flashtime. Ok, so I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the WestAllen scene. It was a fine moment of acting talent from both parties and it was very well done. I had more issues with parts of it originally though. So I know some people were pissed that Iris was the one who came up with the idea. I feel lile the way they were protraying the characters it would have made more sense for Harry to find the solution (or atleast a solution that would actually work and he knew it and then something else happened that kept them from being able to do it and needing a plan B). Actually I wish they had done what I said in the parenthesis rather than his uncertainty. I havr an argument about him being thrown off by and worrying about Jessie and it makes sense in ny head and satisfies me enough but I still feel like they needed something more. That is more about Harry than Iris. Speaking of Iris though. My problem is not that she was the one who found thr solution. Actually it was the speedsters who found the solution they just lost the means to inplement it. Iris found the means so she didn't do any science or anything (I only say that because on multiple occasions Iris has been show to not understand most of the science stuff they talk about...though frankly even I know it takes the energy of atleast a sunlike star to ignite nuclear fusion and that it hasn't been replicated on earth...that's where the science in the show gets shakey but metahumans so...anyway, not the poiny because she didn't do any science and didn't even know nuclear fusion was the goal just that they needed a not of lightening to fix it). Anyway, my point was that neither Iris or Barry had any reason to believe that the lightening would follow him once he exited the speed force. Iris was aware of the Cork Sphere when Barry wasn't to thinking of that and believeing it would create a lot of lighetning when Barry didn't think of it was believable to me. But without someone in the speed force it creates random lightening storms, or that's what it did last time. So my real problem was the leap that they could contril where it went. That is on both parties. As for why I'm fine with Iris being the only one to figure it out (aside from the Harry thing that I covered) is that most everyone else waa asked something specific and ran out of time before they could try or think of anyone else). Really the only issue I had with the episode. But I mean, I'm ok with it. I talked myself into believeing it made a little bit more sense.
Team Leader. Thia waa the biggest issue that I could find about Iris this season. I didn't love it and that makes me sad because I fully believe she would make a great team leader but the way that they did it was so unnatural and awkward it just fell flat. I wish they had built it up through the season maybe. In the comics I know she wasn't quite that involved in the team but in the shoe they just needed to give her something to do and slapped something together. Iria is a great motivator and she is great at bringing people together but they didn't really use any of those traits when she acted as leader this season. So yeah it's not that she was leader, it was that the show didn't handle it well. If they keep her connected to the team in a leadership role next season I hope they improve on that. I know near the end it waa kind of an Iris and Barry tag team thing which I liked a little bit better. Mostly becauae Barry is naturally a good leader and has been team leader for a while. I still think that Barry should be the main leadee but I don't think that Iris should be unconnected with the team. They just need to make it feel more natural...I can think of more than one way...On the topic of unnatural.. Caitlin and Iris friendship...fix it guys. That was just weird and there is real potential there. Fix it...even Felicity and Iris had a better relationship and they aren't even on the same show.
Character Developement. This is the last part but it is a big one. It is also sort of connected to the last one. I liked Iris but I feel like it was more than just her that was knocked slightly OOC this season (Barry took a much smaller hit and Wally when he appeared...also Harry waa just...that's a mess for another time). But Iria was hit the worst. There have been statements from the show saying that Iris's decisions have been shaped by the fear from Savitar last season but even last season she waan't too great as her own character. Don't het me wrong, I still loved her but they wrote her like you wpuld write a supporting character and not a main one. This was also present in the first two seasons but in a relatively lesser extent. But the end of season 4 from Run, Iris, Run onward. Gold. Iris has been a journalist om the show before but it has never felt more right than in the last few episodes of season 4. It also made so much sense that she could be a journalist and help the team in that way. I would actually love if thwy had her colaborate with Barry to leas Team Flash but with her main focus on journalism to get the word out. That way she wouldn't be taking orders from anyone...because you know, Iris...and should could be super helpful in a way that makes sense. So yeah, journalist Iris is wjere it is at people. Love it. Love her. Faith in the show's character developlemnt abilities restored. I lpok forward to next season to see what they will do I know that family is the theme and that Iris will have a very large part of her stpryline eclipsed by recent developements but I doubt that she will let that stop her from doing wjat she was meant for.
As always, comment any other questions or comments you have. Thanks for reading!!!
