MY STANCES ON CONTROVERSIAL CHARACTERS ARE AS FOLLOWS
Anakin Skywalker: This one's fairly obvious, but I'm one of the people who doesn't see Anakin as redeemed by the end of ROTJ just because he saved one person he personally gives a damn about. My definition of redemption is about atoning and making amends, and Anakin has no possible way of actually DOING THAT for most of the things he's done, so there's no real way of acquiring redemption. He can be a better person, he can be forgiven by individual people for things he's done to them, he can keep choosing to be selfless instead of selfish, but none of that necessarily means he has to be considered redeemed. If you think he's redeemed at the end of ROTJ and that's what brings you joy in your interpretation of the story, great, I honestly don't care. But if you choose to come into my notes and get mad at me because I don't think the space fascist is redeemed just because he decides to save his own son, you will now be blocked on sight, I'm done having that conversation with people.
The Jedi As A Whole: Wonderful people with a beautiful culture that never did a single thing to deserve what was done to them. They were not corrupt, they didn't need to reform their culture in a single way. There was nothing more they could've done for Anakin or the Republic that would've stopped what happened. They don't steal children, they adopt them from parents who choose to let their children lead a better life, and become part of the large extended Jedi family. They are intergalactic therapists whose literal way of life IS therapy for those who choose to follow it. They were outplayed, but they did everything they could've possibly done. Sometimes, it is possible to commit no mistakes, and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life. (Side note here: This is an incredibly pro Jedi blog, if you come on my blog and criticize the Jedi in any way, you will be immediately blocked, I am so done with this fandom's anti-Jedi sentiments, consider this your warning.)
Padme Amidala: Deserved better from the Prequels, has such potential and promise and I want so dearly to save her from her toxic ass marriage to a fascist MAGA manchild, but damn am I glad Luke and Leia didn't have to grow up with her as a mother some days.
Bo-Katan Kryze: I wish I could like her, but the writers are making it SO HARD. They don't seem to ever remember that she gleefully set an entire village on fire because they dared ask for their enslaved people back and to not be occupied anymore, but I do.
Satine Kryze: I wish I could like her, but I don't have enough nostalgia for her to overlook how bad the writing is for her. She treats Obi-Wan like garbage, brings out the worst in him, acts very arrogantly about just about everything and never has to take responsibility for her own mistakes so she gets to die a martyr.
Aleksander Kallus: Literally has to have his ENTIRE BACKSTORY retconned so he can be "redeemed" within the span of one episode. Also manages to "All Lives Matter" Zeb into thinking that judging Imperials for their fascist choices is the same as judging an ENTIRE SPECIES on the actions of one individual who was acting in self-defense anyway. Stop saying he's got the best redemption arc in Star Wars, it sucks fucking ass and he's not a fucking Fulcrum, he just stole the title from Ahsoka and didn't earn it and he was a shit spy anyway.
Crosshair: Bigoted dickhead who treats everyone like complete crap and then goes full fascist as a punishment for the world when no one wants to risk their lives to save him. Let him die already, he's not worth saving.
Bode Akuna: Basically just Anakin lite and we all know how I feel about Anakin. No sob story justifies anything he's done and I didn't find him all that interesting or sympathetic, personally.
Rafa and Trace Martez: I actually loved them, I thought they had an interesting relationship with each other and with Ahsoka, I appreciated how different they felt and the arc Ahsoka goes on with them. I don't mind that they used them to showcase the rising anti-Jedi sentiment among the citizens of Coruscant, I just wish their opinions hadn't been presented as though they were right. I love that we see they've joined a rebellion of sorts post-Order 66 and I wish we'd gotten to see more of Trace, Rafa, and Rex working together rather than the absolute trashfire that we're actually getting on TBB.
Ahsoka Tano: Relationship status: It's complicated. I DO like her, generally, but I REALLY dislike the way she's constantly written in later stuff to be better than everyone else and to have basically zero flaws so that she can end up like a messiah or a goddess of light reborn or something. It's boring, it's annoying, and it just isn't any good. I particularly don't care for how she consistently gets utilized to bash the Jedi Order and absolve Anakin for all of his sins. Ahsoka deserves better, but I'm also immensely frustrated with where her story's taken her and the way fandom tends to treat her. We also just straight-up need more main female Jedi characters and as long as Ahsoka's around it feels like it'll never happen.
Sabine Wren: I love the Rebels version of her, but the Ahsoka show version sucks. I have decided it simply does not exist for Sabine. That isn't the real Sabine and it never will be. That's not Sabine's story, the real Sabine would never try to be a Jedi because quite simply she doesn't NEED to be. And the real Sabine would NEVER disrespect Ezra's sacrifice by undoing it and then leaving him to deal with the fallout. It's stupid, it's ugly, and Sabine deserved better.
Hera Syndulla: Much like Sabine, I love the Rebels version of her, but the Ahsoka version sucks. The Ahsoka version deserves to be kicked out of the army or whatever, she's a terrible mother and an even worse General and quite honestly not that great of a friend. The real Hera would NEVER act like orders didn't matter just because she doesn't like them or refuse to see the logic in letting go of Ezra after he's been missing for 10 years so that those resources can go to people who they can confirm are still alive.
Shin Hati: She's so so so boring. She has the personality of cardboard, it basically consists of "crazy eyes" and that's about it. She is pretty literally just Darth Maul but a girl. Like every single part of her character so far is indistinguishable from Maul aside from the cosmetic stuff. I hope she dies in season 2 and never gets a redemption arc. I'd say Sabine deserves better, but honestly Ahsoka!Sabine deserves her.
Grey Jedi: Stop trying to make fetch happen. It's not going to happen. Let Grey Jedi stay in fanon where it belongs, none of your faves are Grey Jedi in canon and they never will be.

Something I've noticed in the Ghost fandom (and others) is some fans feeling "unrepresented" in fanfiction...and thinking that this is a huge moral problem for which they must receive compensation. Which. No.
Does feeling unrepresented in fanfics (and fan art) suck? Yeah, it does. Been there, more than once. Hell, I'm not even really represented in my own actual real life. Does that entitle you to essentially demand that other people make fan works for you, lest they be labeled as "bigoted" or "bad" or otherwise uncaring? No. You're not entitled to people making things that appeal to you, just because.
You're entitled to want this, to feel like you're getting the short end of the fandom stick (and you might be, not gonna deny that), but other people not catering to you doesn't really say much about them at all.
There's solutions to this problem, though. One of them is seeking out people who are already making the kind of fan works you like, that appeal to you/your demographic. Granted, they may be difficult to find (and you may have to look off Tumblr and in more obscure places to find them), but you can't just give up without looking. Look for them, and if you find them, try to develop a friendship or friendly mutual-following-ship with them. (Sometimes easier said than done, I know. Idk how to people, either. But an attempt must be made. God's peed or however that goes.). And hype them up! Promote them! Share the joy with others!
Another solution is making the fan works yourself. You see the stuff that's already here, already made, already in progress? That stuff largely exists because a fan said "I wanna write/draw this", and they went and did it. You can do that too, and in fact you should! Engaging in the creative process is part of the fun of fandom, and you should know and experience this. Now, your skill level may not be where you want it to be or what you think it should be...but since when has that actually stopped anyone? (It certainly never stopped me lmaooo). You have an idea that you'd like to see realized? Draw it. Write it. Who cares if it's "bad"? Everyone's gotta start somewhere, and why shouldn't you let yourself start? Maybe your fan works won't be as popular as others, but who cares? (I never do. Also, fuck popularity. That means you get Perceived™. Gross.). Fandom ain't about popularity. It's about fun and community.
And in order to have that community, you have to participate in it. Even if you're not confident, even if you're awkward, even if you don't think you're as skilled or talented as other people. You gotta do it, and you gotta do it for the love of it.
Teal Dear: In order to get the things you want out of a fandom, you gotta be proactive. Go forth and make some stuff that appeals to you specifically. Be unapologetic about it and have fun. (That's what I do, and I love doing it!)
Okay. I'm tired. I'm going to bed 💤

This might be controversial but...I have this nagging thought...
There are always people here talking how lgbtq representation in fanfiction or fandon is often derided or unwelcome. I think that's pretty sad tbh and there are definitely a lot of trolls, bigots and all sorts of phobes out there.
But tbh, I think most average people are just tired of a particular type of lgbtq representative, and they seem to be everywhere, who forcefully insists that anyone not shipping m/m, anyone not going along with their trans headcanons, anyone who disagrees basically is a homophobe, bigot, terf etc. These people make preferences into a morality issue and I think other people are just tired of it and quietly leaving, not openly and enthusiastically cheering it on and sometimes just getting frustrated.
I was having a discussion on reddit the other day about something related to this and they said well, straight cis representation is like 99.9% of media so we (lgbtq) can have this one thing, and I said of course you can. You can have as much of it as you want in fandom but I don't like how cis/straight shipping gets shit on by these people. You don't have to tear something else down just to build yourself up. The vast majority of het shippers are just normal, nice people, just like the majority of lgbtq shippers but there are all these 'enlightened types' pushing their ships and headcanons and making it out like you're an enemy if you don't support them which is ridiculous.
I was lurking on a pretty big fanfiction forum a year or so ago and fanfiction hot takes came up and several people nervously put up their hand and said they wished there was more love for het shipping in fandom and fanfiction specifically, while doing huge long disclaimers that of course they love nd support the lgbtq community and are happy that all sorts of representation exists in fandom etc. And I think it's kinda sad that people feel they have to write this long disclaimer and pre-apologise for an opinion that's perfectly valid and innocuous because they're afraid of being vilified. If someone is cis/het it's not a crime for them to want cis/het content in their fandom, or for it to be viewed positively. Do you know what I mean? I'm sorry if I'm not explaining myself well -.-'
I feel like people are going to respond and say that cis/het stuff is already the majority but in fanfiction and shipping it's really not. And that's also not the point I'm trying to make. I'm trying to express frustration with people who think lgbtq orientated fan content is morally or in other ways superior to cis/het.
It even happens here. I remember when I first found your blog one of the very first asks I read was from someone acting quite smug and literally saying that het shippers are just superficial, horny self-inserters that want to seduce and bang the MC while they, a m/m shipper, were actually invested in plot and nuance and all those intelligent things that het shippers apparently don't get and that ask left a really bad taste in my mouth.
It's disheartening to see this kind of thing. Sorry again if I didn't express myself well. I'm just trying to say that if lgbtq representation in fandom space isn't getting recognition or people are avoiding it, an important reason might that people don't like feeling like they HAVE to support it or else...
--
It's ironic that you're sending this ask to me when one of the things I'm known for is compiling shipping statistics on FFN and Wattpad to prove that m/m is not the majority in fanfic fandom. This is one of my specific hobbyhorses. I find the constant spreading of this misinformation EXTREMELY ANNOYING.
Yes, there are lots of assholes going "ship my ship or you're not progressive", and they all suck, including the large number of them who yell at m/m shippers that we should ship het.
"I wish het ships got more love" is a fucking stupid opinion.
"I wish Wattpad had a functional search" or "I wish FFN weren't going down the drain" or "I wish the big het fandoms were less femsub" would all be perfectly reasonable takes that are based on actually seeking out het fandoms and hanging out with het fans. So would "I want more fellow hetshippers who have a queer sensibility but f/m ships". But for someone to act like there aren't massive het camps tells me they never bother to venture outside of their tiny bubble.
I have zero patience for fans who whine that their popular thing is unpopular because they're too lazy or clueless to go find all the zillions of other people who like it.

So i know you've said before the clowders in cathedral are mostly indifferent on house cats / previous house cats. But what do they actually think about them based on what they know ? Do they think their lives are weird or interesting?
And on a similar note. I started on a fake book series based on Warriors that has now over the years changed into an original series. I've decided to rework it because of this. And I did have an arc where the main character is treated poorly for being previously a house cat because the clowders think theyre lazy and dishonourable (this later changes in the story and they come to accept them). I don't want it to be xenophobic like Warriors though. There's an actual explanation as to why the clowders don't like them and the main character learns this and tries to convince the cats that just because one cat sucks doesnt mean they all do. Do you think that's acceptable and fall out of the xenophobia? (If other people could give their input i'd love that as well Idk who else to turn to about this)
first off i shouldn’t be your only source here! if you haven’t already, take some time to research xenophobia in fantasy from well-established writers and folks who actually experience xenophobia.
one of waca’s problems is pitting the clans against every non-clan cat because the narrative positions them as “superior.” according to the books all cats should be clan cats to live their best life, and there’s a weird colonialist mentality whenever our main characters interact with non-clan groups or individuals. the way i’ve written the darrows in cathedral kinda serves as a jab/deconstruction of the waca clans. but the key difference here is portrayal, there’s no doubt that the darrows function very poorly and are cultish. their dislike of cats outside of their very small group presents itself in their limited gene pool. they are a fucking mess and i do not paint them in a charitable light.
i think regardless of what creature you’re writing about real world problems will seep into your story, no matter how you label them in-universe. because you are a human writing a story. what you described does sound like it drifts into xenophobia territory, but as i said earlier the concerning shit tends to lie in depiction/author bias. othering is a very common trope in fiction in general… make it explicitly bad. i’m glad your clowders come to accept house cats because wc’s complete lack of growth with the kittypet thing post-arc 1 perplexes me. if it’s still present it should be challenged and not just through character interaction but through the writing itself.
“all house cats are lazy and dishonorable” is a very warrior cats issue (down to the main character being one), so to differentiate yourself maybe reshape it until it’s unique to your story. this is more of a general writing thing though. i can imagine it being compared to wc and from my own experience that can be frustrating down the line.
soo i think my overall point here is that you’re bound to run into issues like this when writing fantasy/xenofiction, which is why research, self-reflection, and sensitivity readers are extremely crucial. keep your presentation consistent as well. if you want to condemn kitty xenophobia in your world you don’t want your readers thinking, “actually, it kinda makes sense!!!” be careful you’re not entertaining the beliefs of bigoted characters.

"I AM THE GOVERNMENT," Speckled says, but she is just talking to a bunch of rocks about rules they do not have the intellectual capacity to understand. Seriously, just because you took one political science class doesn't mean you can run a government, smh.
I don't actually have a lot of rules as of now. Just:
Um, no racism, sexism, ableism, etc. We try not to be prejudiced bigots here, and if you are one of those things, I suggest you educate yourself and think about life a litte. If you're not willing to do that, then block and move on.
Mind the tags; no really, mind the tags. I admit I'm not the best at tagging my works, but I'm not incompetent at it enough to have someone looking for fluff end up getting traumatized. Read the tags---you are responsible for what you read. However, as I alluded to earlier, I am more than willing to retag a work if I didn't tag it effectively; just don't be rude about it. Speaking of,
I am open to criticism, but don't be a dick about it. I want to improve my craft as much as I can, and constructive criticism is a useful tool, not "yo this shit sucks balls, kys" and stuff. Don't expect me to take you seriously if you aren't going to be polite about it.
I do not take requests. Maybe one day, but if that day comes it will be VERY limited and small. I do love writing, but I work on writing outside of this blog and other things too, like school. I am open to discussions and some good ol' brainrot, but I'll likely just delete any requests I see. Likewise, please don't pressure for updates or new works. I know that most people don't ask for Part 2s and stuff out of malice or in bad faith, but it's a little...not soul-crushing, but it is exhausting. But, I will provide any updates on things I'm working on, if I so choose to.
No NSFW. As of now, I have no plans to or desire to write outright smut or anything. My works do allude to NSFW, but just that. So, um, yeah. No dick headcanons or anything here.
Brainrot. Yes. Please give me your deranged thoughts. I need them. I need to talk about my brainrot, I need others' brainrot to sustain my very being. Come on, you know you wanna talk about how X character would break your legs because they were so scared you'd leave them, UwU. We do be a little freaky here.
Have fun! This blog is a blog I have for funsies, so enjoy your time here.

fuck it proper intro time.
who are you and why should we care?
my names metaru, or Jamie/rea/defo/def/Dionne/tommy/clem/clement any of those is ok, and i use they/it pronouns! i’m a horror author and artist, primarily of fan work. currently i’m super into the dsmp, but i have a shitton of special interests that cycle, which does include the dsmp but also pokemon, sonic, homestuck, undertale, sims, gravity falls, the owl house, and probably more i’m forgetting. follow me if you like deranged horror AUs, fics, and art pieces centring around dysfunctional relationships (usually familial). i am also kin of protegeinnit /srs
do you have any other social media?
i don’t like social media very much but I do have an ao3 account, if that counts. i have a discord but i only use it to talk to my friends on our own private server tbh.
is x post ok to reblog?
yes anything here is okay to reblog.
can i dm you/send you an ask?
yes about anything unless it’s harassing someone who isn’t me. you are all besties to me.
why do you take so long to write/make art sometimes?
i have really bad chronic pain which knocks me out sometime. it sucks as much for me to not be able to create as it does for you to not be able to get creations.
do you have a dni?
no, i’ll just block you. as long as you aren’t a bigot and don’t harass my followers you’ll probably be fine.
can i tag you in things?
i’d love that please do.
do you really have several dozen c!primeboys AUs?
yes. i cannot stop thinking them up, ask me about them sometime.
what’s your opinion on *x discourse topic*?
my opinion is that discourse on tumblr is a toxic unnuanced mess that causes even unambiguously correct sides to be harmful and therefore i’m not getting involved. i used to post so much discourse as a teen and it was fucking stupid and actually put me in danger a few times. in general tho, i generally don’t see a point in giving a shit unless ppl are hurting others and if someone is only hurting others by accident they need to be treated with kindness too.
what the fuck is up with your username?
i’m physically and mentally disabled and think that’s pretty pog hence the proud freak part and metal sonic is my favourite sonic character hence the metaru sonniku part.
also important message that the way i write c!primeboys is based in part off my own family and if anyone is weird about it fuck off thats not only breaking tommy and dreams boundaries but my own.

Wow. You're sure putting in a lot of time and effort into a man you claim not to like. A normal person, with a normal, rational brain, would simply walk away and pay him no mind. Say you're jealous and go because girlie, it's embarrassing as fuck and so many blogs on here laugh at you behind the scenes. There's a whole ass group chat dedicated to just laughing at you and your friend's nonsense. That's how embarrassing you, and your friends, are. ///
Okay. Here we go.
First: this is absolutely not about jealousy. Bringing up problematic behavior and people needs to happen. Here’s the best part: you don’t like what’s being said, so you probably are part of the fucking problem.
@oh-my-damn has done nothing but listen and share experiences POC, myself included, have had with this, and why our feelings are the way they are. We may not agree on real or PR, but that doesn’t affect shit between us because we are fucking adults who can have grown ass conversations.
What she’s done, just by listening and not speaking over POC voices and experiences is way more than other mods on here have done. She posts the food and the bad. And if you’re uncomfortable with that, you’re part of the fucking problem.
Do you really think she nor anyone else who is friends with her actually care that there’s a ducking group chat made just to talk shit? No. Wanna know why? You probably don’t, but I’m still going to tell you.
It’s because she and her friends address the shit talking head on. There are no passive aggressive posts or asks, they don’t need to go on anon to say their piece. They talk about it to and in front of the people that cause the fucking issues in this fandom. Creating a group just to shit talk cause you’re too fucking scared or hypocritical to actually say it outright is being a fucking coward and a child.
Run back to your fucking group chat. You belong there. And trust, that’s not a good thing. Get the fuck on and outta here with this bullshit
Tumblr media
Listen. Y'all can make as many group chats about me as you fucking want. Y'all can even try to blame me for doxxing, or talking shit, or being jealous, or being a hater, or whatever the fuck you want.
At the end of the day, I'm here doing me. I'm living my fucking life, I come on here when I have time, but otherwise I go to Law School (yes, you read that right. Keep that in mind next time you want to harrass, honeys. Oh, and that's not even my first degree. It is my second one. So yeah, come suck my dick), I write occasionally about characters or storylines that intrigue me, and I talk to my friends (and also people who are more than friends but I digress), and SOMETIMES I speak about topics that MATTER. They matter to a lot of people and they SHOULD matter to you. And the reason they probably don't, is because you're a bigoted racist. There, I said it.
Fucking hell. Make that fucking group chat. I hope you even put my pfp as your fucking cover photo. I hope you name it "Mandy's Hate Squad". I hope you talk about me all day.
ALL DAY. TALK ABOUT ME ALL DAY.
Tumblr media
I am proud that I, little old me who started a blog without even knowing how to fucking use tumblr, am on your mind enough that you NEED A WHOLE ENTIRE CHAT TO DISCUSS ME AND WHAT I DO.
God. What an honor.
I will be handing out headshots and autographs soon.
Stay tuned for my con dates!
And @adulting-sucks? I love you. Thank you for being you, always ❤️
Oh, and I also want to add... That this entire ask from the original anon was created to, once again, DEFLECT. from the REAL ISSUES. Because that's what the Defenders do. They are apologists of REAL SHIT THAT SHOULD NOT BE EXCUSED. LIKE RACISM. AND ANTI-SEMITISM. AND FATPHOBIA.
I am sure they don't understand what it means when people start excusing that kind of shit. But luckily a lot of us do.
So fuck them.
Come suck my big sweaty balls you losers 🥰😘

Obviously they'll keep going with "anything Ed does in his Babygirl Kraken Era is actually Izzy's fault", that interpretation may buckle at some point and then it's jumping to "This Is Bad/Racist Writing" lol at no point does Ed retain agency or responsibility for what he does
yeah that's what i'm worried about 😭 i wanna be careful to not make fun of the idea of people being critical of writing or the potential for racist writing since it is a very common trope of portraying moc as hyper violent. so i can understand the concern from people, but also i am just placing my faith in the creative team for right now because so far i've found the way they navigate race and identity to be really solid. here's hoping that continues! but i do understand why many poc would feel incredibly wary of something like that occurring for stereotypical racist writing. that and ik that poc are often dismissed in literally every fandom when bringing up very valid concerns about the source material, so i personally want to be careful to make sure i'm not mocking that idea, ya feel me?
but like the writing team is p solid and diverse and david jenkins is very open to feedback from the actors/crew so i think it'll be fine. like ik vico said that if they wanted something to be different they just talked to him and he was like "yah bet that's cool go for it!" so i just feel like taika is smart enough to be conscious of his character's racialization and that he is nowhere close to shy and will just say something if there's a problem.
but like dndndn i do worry about how i don't think fandom is always the best at critical engagement and can take shallow standpoints often divorced from historical context to justify certain viewpoints. they're also not very patient and have a hard time differentiating between flawed characters vs bigoted writing. i think there's a good chance that a part of fandom might get so absorbed into an ideal of edward who has his more glaring flaws sanded down, that when that comes into direct conflict after 1+ years of no new content, they might immediately jump to a conclusion built on incomplete information that the writers are wrong and bigoted.
fandom ain't really the best at nuance and i think it gets people confused when protagonists of color do bad things. altho again, i do feel like there has to be some empathy here because i know this is learned behavior after years of poc in fandom feeling as if they need to defend the characters of color from hyperscrutiny. like you have people in star wars saying finn is disregarding rey's consent by grabbing her hand, or people in the hannibal fandom who talk about how jack is an abuser and evil and vilify him completely because that makes it easier to uplift hannibal/will instead of recognizing jack as a nuanced chara as well. (also will is into hannibal's atrocities so idt we need to spend time vilifying jack as if there's a threat here 😭)
but it just sucks because it's taking on a defensive position that then sucks away agency from ed himself and erases key aspects of his character. there's so many poc in the show and that's great bc we can have a huge range of personalities. because there's so many poc, ed is able to be more morally gray and violent and full on babygirl because he's not being forced to represent the entirety of communities of color as the singular brown rep!

4 and 19 for the salty ask game
you didn't specify a fandom but im pretty sure you followed me for owl house stuff so i will assume you meant the owl house fandom.
4. Do you have a NoTP in your fandom? Are they a popular OTP?*
lmao if youve followed me for any time at all you would know i fucking hate the huntlow ship. huntlow ship my beloathed <3< <3< <3< :333 at least how 90% of the fandom portrays them. ppl will see a white angsty boy and immediately find the one shippable girl and file down all her character and make her his emotional support decoration.
to be clear, huntlow in the actual show is fine. i don't think them getting together would add anything to their character arcs, and since the show is running on a tight schedule i think they should have just cut that subplot out. i think there are ways to make them interesting but the show doesn't have any time to do that. there's barely anything substantial about the ship in canon anyway so i think it's fine. it's ignorable if you dislike it and its enough to extrapolate into a funny post canon ship if you do. my opinion on huntlow in the show is like my opinion on gustholomule. it's fun to consider but it's obviously not important to the story i actually care about.
but the shippers??? hoooo the shippers. first of all while i don't like to think about most fandom stuff from the stance of representation it's really important that owl house is like. THE gay cartoon rn. the creator had to fight tooth and nail and write around a bunch of stuff to get queer couples on air and make the fandom more receptive to it outside of a fetishistic thing or a "cute background couple that everyone acknowledges is canon but no one actually explores" thing. and then the moment a blond boy looks at a girl everyone explodes. im not calling ppl bigoted for shipping it bc i dont know the exact reasons every single huntlow shipper likes the ship but the fact that they also try to use rep to justify it? even though 90% of them didn't give a shit about the non white boy half of the ship before the ship became a thing? not a great look for the average huntlow fan lmao.
also the mischaracterization of both characters, especially willow, is super annoying. it shouldn't be a hot take but characterizing willow to be a brute that tries to beat up everyone who looks at her wrong? and indicating that hunter, a survivor of child abuse, is attracted to her because of this? uhhhhh don't like that! its one thing to portray this and explore why its bad but that sure isn't what 90% of the shippers do! youre allowed to depict any dynamic you want but im allowed to say that depiction sucks shit! same with making willow to be either a 50s housewife or a manic pixie dream girl she isn't any of that? literally just make a self insert to ship hunter with if you want his ya love interest ass so bad.
anyway ive complained more about the huntlow ship and its place in fandom here, here, here, here, here, and here, among others. a lot of my points are in the tags lmao. that isn't to say all huntlow shippers are annoying some of them make genuinely good content thats in character for both of them! but the shipping community is. bad. and i already didn't care for the ship anyway so they haven't made my opinion better. it was a mistake for the show to put hunter's conventionally attractive angsty ass into a shippable position lmao.
19. What is the one thing you hate most about your fandom?
I think part of this phenomenon is because the fandom skews younger since at the end of the day toh is a disney show rated for kids. but there's a phenomenon ive seen with a lot of young skewing fandoms where fans assume just because the thing they like is diverse, that automatically exempts them from being bigoted or even having implicite biases. like "i cant be racist my friend is black!" but it's with fandoms so they have even less of a leg to stand on. ive been guilty of that too in the past and im trying to examine my biases both in fandom and more importantly in real life.
the fandom has a serious favouritism towards the white and/or male characters. just look at the disparity of opinions on the blight parents, even before clouds on the horizon. or even better, before s2 when all we had on them was just a background shot in lilith's flashback. people were already portraying odalia as a catty evil woman and alador as his uwu tortured husband whos scared of her, before we even knew their names.
same goes for other female villains compared to the male ones. all the villains are different so there isn't a one to one comparison but generally, the reactions to villains like darius (right after his first appearance in edas requiem) and graye were a lot more nuanced. most people who talked about them were trying to write meta about them or finding them sexy or thinking about a redemption arc.
and compared to female villains like terra or kikimora? i am serious about this they were objectively more compelling villains than darius or graye in their debut, if you discount kiki's minor appearances in s1 and just look at hunting palismen, her first episode as a major villain. and yet most people talking about terra and kiki after the fact were just calling them bitches or other more sexist stuff i won't say. and being mad at them for...doing bad things to the protagonists? bc they're villains? i get the lack of thirsting but no serious meta? ive grumped about it here. also i wasn't in the fandom during the week between agony of a witch and young blood old souls where everyone wanted lilith's head on a stick but from what ive heard? yyyyeah i don't think they were just mad at her for being a villain.
same thing with the white characters people always give so much more focus on the white characters compared to the poc. luz had a bunch of angst like amity in season 1 but 99% of lumity content focused entirely on amity angst. the hyperfocus on hunter is something to note too. i get that fans love angsty characters. i do too. but him being a white boy definitely didn't hurt his popularity lmao.
its a problem in the show too so not all the blame falls on fans. the show focuses on majority white characters as well. even though the show is very racially diverse, luz's most important relationships except her mom are eda, amity, and hunter, and gus and willow are pushed to the side. same thing with their portrayal of some female characters i love what they did with terra and kiki but their portrayal of odalia...oof. i've grumped about that here.
but yeah if you point this out a lot of fans get uncomfortable or even angry at you for accusing them of, in their eyes, being a Bad Person who likes Bad Things and have Bad Thoughts. so they argue back that there's no definitive proof that any biases are happening on a personal basis. and yeah i can't prove beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law that you're actually secretly racist or sexist but if you just look at general trends in the fandom? the bias is there. it's not a problem of individual people it's a problem of fandom culture.
anyway i don't want to say fans who do this are bad people because judging by the ages of some fans toh might be baby's first fandom for some of these kids. they haven't had enough life experience to really examine their biases or even determine their principles. it would be mean to condemn kids for having biases, especially since i also did that at their age and i'm still trying to deconstruct my biases now. these kids need to learn about nuance in media and also that fandom is not activism, but it's not my job to teach them this. this is annoying but it's a reasonable price for being in fandom. especially a fandom for a show targeted at kids.

Because I've seen an uprising recently both in people being completely anti-fandom and anti-fanfic and people in fandom with no critical thinking:
If you're against fandom and fanfiction as a whole I literally have a fandom sideblog (that I'm going to reblog this to as well) and I read and write fanfiction so you probably shouldn't be following me. A lot of points presented are usually good however I find that a lot of people who are against fandom as a whole aren't saying anything that isn't also being said by people still in fandom with common sense, and a lot of them also engage in literal middle school bullying shit and call people nerds and advance cringe culture because they have no idea how to have actual civilized discussions. However I am critical of actual harmful things that get promoted in fandom, some of the stances that should be common sense but apparently aren't that I hold are:
I don't support proshipping
I believe that you should engage with media critically and if something's really bigoted just full on stop engaging with it
I don't think writing fanfiction or shipping or making headcanons is inherently a marker that you don't understand and respect the themes of the original or an inherently bad action, yes even if it's an AU or is NSFW (about characters that are actually adults and tagged properly) or is a fix-it or whatever it's cool to dislike now
The above point doesn't extend to actual incest, pedophilia, or real people if you write that you're gross
All that being said also you should engage with and understand canon before you interact with the fandom and during your interactions with the fandom, the original themes are still important even if you're mainly here to write fanfiction
You should actually acknowledge when the source material fucked up and did something bigoted even if it was unintentional or whatever, your favorite piece of media is not exempt from being queerphobic, misogynistic, and racist just because you like it or other media has done worse
All the fanfiction being turned into YA is bad but it's not because it was originally fanfiction and all fanfiction sucks or whatever, it's because turning fanfiction into original fiction doesn't work fundamentally (because you're not developing your own unique characters if you just repurpose fic and the way you structure plot for fanfiction and original fiction should be different to, fanfiction builds off of or changes canon, original fiction should be able to stand on it's own and have unique plotlines) and half the time the writers getting published sucked at writing
It is possible to engage in fandom to have fun and also acknowledge the flaws both in fandom culture in the original media
Bigotry and other harmful views are present in fandom spaces just like they are everywhere else and it's the responsibility of people engaging in fandom not to spread these things further
If you disagree with anything I just said there you can go too you shouldn't be following either. I block basically anyone who's either against fandom completely or in fandom but doesn't engage critically because I'm trying to find the increasingly vanishing middle ground of "fandom people engaging critically with media" that disappears further and further as time goes on on this site. I am just trying to have fun and also analyze things critically, which most of you seem incapable of doing either one or both of.

sigh. top idk how many things that happened in jungle cruise
they tried to recreate the amusement park ride. like within the movie there was a whole ass scene that was just the ride but irl. it does not work at all ever
dwayne the rock johnson somehow has a tamed jaguar that respons to like a dozen voice commands and wags her tail like a dog
the gay character (macgregor but that's long so I'll be calling him mcgee) is. the worst stereotypes ive ever seen like seriously something straight out of an at the time progressive but in hindsight very homophobic early 2000s movie
the rock tells the woman (lily?) she cant bring all her luggage on board. turns out she only brought one bag and the 20 or so giant boxes of clothes belong to her brother because.... gay people right. haha
mcgee uses the words "i keep my eyes elsewhere" to describe himself being gay. the rock mhms and says well. to elsewhere and drinks and then passes the bottle to mcgee. this is supposed to show acceptance but it just makes it look like the rock is gay
the rock is perfectly fine with gay people but he draws the line at women having rights despite having spent the past 400 years in the jungle (with a tribe whose chief is a woman)
literally some of the worst body horror i have ever fucking seen in a pg13 movie it is far beyond enough to traumatise a child
mcgee kills a man
in her first scene lily is perfectly okay with killing 5 innocent old men who were just standing around. the only reason they survive is bc all 10? swords she threw at them miss by an inch
the villains all speak accented english. the rock, despite being the villain's brother and a native spanish speaker, speaks perfect unaccented english
the german villain says scheiße before being graphically killed on screen
way too many jokes about someone pissing their pants. like seriously mcgee non jokingly says he pissed his pants while covering his crotch TWICE and later they show someone w their pants soaked
also like. an insane amount of innuendo??? especially in one scene i will do my very best to forget (and that post is NOT all of it just the homophobic parts)
multiple jokes so homophobic they would've made me gasp and say fuck off even if this movie was 20 years old. but it came out today
what an utter shitshow

I don’t really think Charlie was being intentionally transphobic in that scene I think he was just being stupid
(I’m trans BTW)
yeah i agree im not talking abt the characters rlly but what the intent behind the writing is. it's played out as if mac's stupid for thinking identity = who you are (and its pretty obvious theyre alluding to gender identity).
mac going "they're the same thing now charlie, and i could have you cancelled for even suggesting otherwise" (<- might not be the exact quote but im not going back to watch it), as if this is something new and not just how gender fuckin works
kinda reminds me of the whole...... charlie "pooping transgender" bit in the gang solves the bathroom problem. in-universe, dennis is an idiot so it makes sense for him to say shit like charlie "identifying as a woman when he poops". but what are the intentions behind the writing? whos actually the butt of the joke here? for my personal sake i always see it as making fun of dennis for being a dumb, ignorant cis dude, but stepping back, looking at it objectively, that's not what they meant to do. the entire thing is p much just "haha, man in a dress" and pushes weird misconceptions abt gender identity/transness onto the viewer
so back to what you were saying, ofc charlie didnt mean to be transphobic. mac didnt mean anything bad either. i interpret it as charlie being clueless abt gender, and mac being an annoying cis gay who thinks he's the world's biggest trans ally only for him to spew bigoted rethoric without even realizing it (bc hes ignorant. again kinda like in the bathroom ep when he talks abt reparations and it ends up w him suggesting they segregate the fuckin bathrooms lmao)
but behind my own interpretation, there's what rcg actually tried to convey. and it shows if you look at the comments on that clip. if you scroll through them a little bit you'll see what i'm talking about
Tumblr media
THIS is the target audience for that joke. it fucking sucks but i think it's important we talk about it. we shouldnt be pretending this show is like..... fighting for our rights lmfao bc no it's not

HOMESTUCK RAMBLE
The most troubling thing about the Sarah Z situation is that everything felt like damage control, tactical intimidation, and knee-jerked censorship. Right off the cuff of Hussie’s patreon message*.
(*Does anyone ever notice how Hussie only talks to the fandom when some kind of trouble eventually boils over, usually pointing a finger in one direction, versus addressing things earlier or addressing things period? Such as him having the power to speak against the actual anti queer jargon toward his employees prior to them leaving when things got worse? Or him mentioning the concerns of HS2 that people only found out through word of mouth and were reasonably upset about, such as them getting rid of the content warnings, or the fact that Hiveswap Act 2 was released without credits?
Would certainly make me less irritated if I didn’t know that that message is probably going to be one of his only few that he chooses to write and not mention other things, such as the returned antagonism toward fans.
But this is also the same guy who continues to write passive aggressive messages in his comic and game scripts that calls everyone else a loser for still being mad about the racism and ableism. (Seriously, Psycholonials is just a vague post in game form and it’s chaotic as fuck to do things like using riots (racially prominent a year ago) in the toned environment of 2020 as goofy plot points. I thought we were suppose to do BETTER after Skaia Net.)
Idc if he’s not apart of WP anymore. Even then, he certainly left a lot of baggage for other people to handle. It’s incredibly irresponsible.
Anyways.)
Those journals have existed forever. Whether right or wrong, they have. They’ve gone unaddressed despite being known for existing. A big name youtuber giving an auditory version that doesn’t take up all the video probably shouldn’t have been the reason that fans finally got some kind of answer, and it’s blatantly transparent that it was to protect the IP from having it’s name tarnished. As if Homestuck doesn’t already have issues that it refuses to acknowledge after a decade that everyone else has talked about.
I can imagine that some kind of NDA was keeping them from talking about Hiveswap to their kickstarter backers, but the convenience of that expiring once Sarah said something gives me an inkling that the people who’ve actually stuck around to support Homestuck could’ve heard sooner. Not to mention that before this big blowout, people just wanted to know that the game was being worked on period. There was actually no NDA preventing that communication.
People wonder why there’s such a rift between WP and the homestuck community, and it’s stuff like that. The fact that Hussie only comes down to address damage when it piles up to a breaking point, rather than earlier. The fact that if you have one criticism, friends or associates of the people who write their favorite characters will maul you in the name of whatever marginalized group they happen isolate you from.
And at the end of it all, it’s almost like some big, surface level moral, because no one cared 3 days after Sarah’s video. Everyone treated it like usual youtube commentary essays about troubling developments and moved on.
Instead, now, still, everyone cares about the fact that an opinion video about Homestuck was getting legal threats during 4/13. After years of a troubled relationship with it’s fandom, this was the last thing they needed to do. I’m trying to wrap my head around what the favorable outcome was here; to look GOOD?
I can’t even imagine what this stunt looks like to other studios and IP groups. I wonder if Homestuck is secretly blacklisted at this point because so much bad behavior has been normalized instead of having a healthy blend between criticism and sympathy.
BC again, a transphobic bigot sending death threats bc homestuck “isn’t what it use to be”, and responding to that rightfully, isn’t the same as someone thinking that more jarring post-canon content and execution of things like toblerone wishes suck some, and figureheads deciding to insult minors, stir character drama, and call other bulk criticisms from the queer community homophobic or transphobic. That in fact loses support, money, and causes infighting, actually.
I’ve never seen a fandom decline in stable activity as hard as 2019-2020 Homestuck.
This is the part where I say that my caliginous crush from wanting to see this IP improve itself flares up from time to time, but is starting to die down knowing that, unless there’s a massive overhaul on how things are run, things aren’t changing...seriously. There are things HS can do even without Viz Media’s overbearing presence, but it doesn’t want to. Starting a feud on your holiday wasn’t one of those things to do, maybe, actually.
I think it’s telling that it’s actually bad enough that I usually refrain from talking as much as I am now, because some part of me knows that some ex WP member, or a friend of one, is reading this and potentially sharing it in whatever snotty chat to once more emphasize how evil of a person I am for saying what everyone else is thinking, lmao.
I think that if anyone wants to pride themselves in not being “terminally online” and in fandom, they should refrain from putting their hands on a story that’s literally embedded and literally about it’s fandom. Go join a private discord instead, or try a different franchise. Maybe have some self awareness. Just a thought.
Anyways, the trust is tainted. The fallout has been followed by quiet, and the current members are reshaping the ground of this community before the weeds eventually rear their heads again.

Jaehaerys the douchebag was the real surprise of Fire & Blood. From him creating the whole Targaryen exceptionalism bullshit so he could bang his sister. And then of course there is his horrible treatment of his daughters. The callouness with having one hundred men strip naked in front of the one who was mentally disabled was just "dad of year". And this is the best king?
Hello @eonweheraldodemanwe ,
You have no idea how much I hated that Fire and Blood book and Jayjay was one of the biggest reasons. That annoying piece of sh*t lived that long just to p*ss me off.
This book made me rooting for Maegor. He really should have killed idiot Aenys' whole brood to save all of us from misery.
I don't even want to talk about that book. Yes it tells that ALL Targs suck but Martin really put very problematic and disturbing ideas in that book which totally ruined the series for me.
Anyway... That idiot Jayjay and fake feminist Alysanne were so fcking annoying and selfish. They married despite of the political situation Westeros in because of Targs' desire to fck each other and I was like: WHY? Selfish weirdos used their nukes to shut people up and came up with that Exceptionalism bullsh*t to shut people up for longer. Their daughter Daenerys dying of shivers and our beloved Khaleesi now shitting on grass really proved that TaRGs aRe sPeciaL.
What really bothered me with that book was that it felt like a joke. Yes, to certain degree that book was satire but written as a Targ propaganda. So it had two aspects of it.
1- This a Targ POV, therefore a propaganda so don't let it fool you.
2- This is a satire about how in subtext Targs sucked.
But it was also obvious that Martin tried to give an example of his ideal/good king with characters like Jayjay. Even though he makes sure that Jayjay was also an a*shole, he gives the hints of him being a good king.
I think (!) Martin believes that a good ruler doesn't have to be a good man and this is fine... I don't believe this idea, but I can respect it.
My problem was those hints of a good king. Because they didn't feel developed naturally.
[Btw, Martin sees Jayjay as a good king, I didn't come up with that idea: source]
Martin's attempts to paint Jayjay and Alysanne as good king and queen were laughable.
I know that Martin prefers the peaceful kings.. the ones who don't fight etc.
OK. But I find this idea unrealistic. Not all wars are for money and fame. His idea of a king who only cares about improving economy and good harvest is a little utopic.
And I think he cheated a little when he tried to show that Jayjay was a king who chose peace over fighting. Because that little sh*t didn’t have to fight in the first place. Meagor suddenly dies, so does Septon Moon, Joffrey Doggett starts serving him with tears in his eyes (WHY?) and Faith Militan got disbanded because let's incest weirdos who think they are gods defend the Faith. Aaaaand now you have a kingdom without any defiance. Wow Jayjay... you worked too hard dude, go fck your sister for a while.
Martin was like: "Hey this bloodpurist weirdo loves reading and talks about tax policy... obviously best king ever!".
Him wasting pages for his tax policy was such a weak attempt to make his point about Aragorn's tax policy. Because I didn't care about Jayjay's kingship in the first place. Yes a lot of awful leaders in the history managed to come up with good economical or whatever policies but those people actually sucked in the long run so we don't remember them as good leaders, therefore awful people can't be good rulers imo. Sorry not sorry. When I read Jayjay's reign, I didn't consider him as a good king for a second.
And his sister wife was even worse. She was like I HAVE TO BE HIS QUEEN!! Why? Because. Yeah ALIEsanne, only you can be a good queen, you freak. Let's be disrespectful and selfish to Westeros' people.
She was like: "I ended that barbaric first night tradition (I wonder why Martin insisted on some "myth" about Middle Ages...) because look at the poor women who suffered because of barbaric Northern Lords (she works on this after her visit to North was so?????). What would Westeros do without some white imperialist bloodpurists who are more sophisticated than barbaric Westeros lords???"
And she got surprised when Valyrian lords were also into prima nocta but HEY, women in Dragonstone were happy about it because Valyrians were not some simple lords! They were GODS!!! Such a blessing! Because women love being used by "gods".
She was like: "Women can RULE too" But she usupers her sister's right. And Martin tries to paint her as a good queen because she let women speak. She believes she is superior!!! Who cares about her fake woke white feminism?!
ANYWAY. Both Jayjay and ALIEsanne were awful and I didn't read them as good king and queen. I think Martin's philosophy of "bad people can be good rulers" wasn't for me. Because I believe that a ruler who believes he/she is superior than normal people can't be a good ruler. Ofc, good ones makes mistakes too but were talking about: Bloodpurism, racism, nuclear weapons and imperialism here. These are not some normal human faults. These are the recipe for a really awful rulership.
Another yikes about that book was that all anti Targ people were AWFUL or they died while they were fcking a horse!?. Only perverts, mad people, sexist pigs and bigots were anti Targ during the whole book. And people of Westeros were ok with Targs... Yeah who wouldn't love some white people with nukes come to invade your land? This is some white American thing, I guess...
When people of Westeros killed some geckos because some old smelly mad man provoked them to do, they felt bad afterwards!?!??! Literally all book was a joke and you can't force it to make sense by only saying that this was written as a Targ propaganda because Martin CHOSE to write this way. And I can't unsee the problematic aspects... This book screamed: "AN OLD WHITE AMERICAN WROTE ME".
I love Martin, but I wish he didn't write this book at all. If I sound bitter about him lately, this book is the reason. I wasn't expecting sth this awful.
And the book wasn't even pleasing to read. It had no literary value. Just bunch of unnecessary information (like the Septa who wrote a naughty book) about annoying and awful people.
It lacked the aspects that made Asoiaf great like the psychological side of the characters or character developments and arcs and beautiful POVs...
But it shares one of Asoiaf's weak points: NO POV from anti Targ people. He failed to give a POV to people in Essos against Dany in main books and this created the DANY THE WHITE SAVIOUR. He makes the same mistake in this book too and I hated it... I wish he wrote this book from different perspectives in Westeros. But too late.
In conclusion: I HATED THAT BOOK. But at least it showed one thing clearly: ALL TARGS SUCK.
Thanks for the ask.

Tumblr media
She was exhausted, after the whole situation in the woods, and then running back to Gaipan to get to Ria and the old woman she was treating, to then staying up most of the night assisting Ria in any way possible in said treatment - she was looking forward to collapsing on her small bed. It was worth it though, the old woman was beginning to recover, and the fact that this wouldn’t have been possible without the herbs she’d collected made her feel all warm inside - like maybe, just maybe, she could make up for all the bad things she had done.
Her mind worked on autopilot, her feet dragging her towards the small room she stayed in, and as soon as her bed was in reach she flopped down onto it, sleep taking over as soon as her head hit the pillow.
But apparently she wasn’t allowed to sleep for long, a loud commotion in the main square waking her up from her much needed slumber.
She quickly got changed into a new tunic, this one was dark green, with lighter green stitching along the pants - nothing special but considerably better than the dark red of the tunic she was wearing yesterday.
As she approached the crowd, she could hear the fire nation soldiers shouting at someone. Dread coiled in her stomach, she had managed to avoid almost all interactions with the soldiers since she entered this village, which was impressive as they had started to use it as a military outpost,  but y/n had learnt early on that if she kept her head down and avoided causing issues she was ignored. And so for the few months she had been here, not one of the soldiers had ever recognised her, or even noticed she was fire nation - and even if they had figured out where she hailed from, they had never said anything. Maybe, if this was the case, then they might even like having her around instead of just earth kingdom citizens, not that that was an issue to most people, just bigoted soldiers who think they’re better than everyone.
After pushing through the gathered crowd to see what was going on, she was surprised to see the water tribe boy she’d ran into in the woods trying to reason with the village and soldiers. She nudged the woman next to her, “What’s going on?”
The woman looked down at her, shrugging her shoulders slightly, “Apparently we need to leave the town as quick as possible, the boy said something about the dam breaking.”
She inhaled a sharp breath, if that was the truth then they really were in danger, the boy’s ongoing argument with the soldiers not helping move the situation along at all. She pondered if he would have anything to gain from removing the villagers from their homes, and when her mind came up empty she stepped forward, gaining the attention of the soldiers and water tribe boy alike.
“I think we should trust him.”
The soldiers raised their eyebrows at her, she stared back, unwilling to break eye contact in this sudden battle of wills. But she could still feel the surprised eyes of the water tribe boy on her, probably not expecting anyone to come to his aid, especially someone who had been attacked by the group he had been with.
The leading soldier finally broke eye contact with her, instead asking, “What makes you certain he’s not a spy?”
She scoffed, was that really what they thought he was? Pathetic. “Well he’s clearly not from around here, and if he was a spy wouldn’t he try and actually fit in?”
The soldier nodded as he considered this, but before he could say anything, y/n spoke up again, “And anyway, surely it’s better to be safe than sorry, arguing this point any longer could just risk these people getting hurt, and that includes you as well by the way, so again I believe we should listen to him. And if he’s lying then it just means we’re inconvenienced for a small period of time.”
The soldier bristled at the direct and disrespectful way she spoke to him, but understood the angle she was coming from, nodding his head and shouting out orders at the villagers surrounding them, telling them to collect their most essential belongings as quickly as possible and to leave via the main bridge connected to the village.
Satisfied with the result and realising she needed to collect her own stuff, y/n turned around, ready to head back to her room, but before she got far, a hand encircled her wrist, pulling her to a stop.
She turned, ready to fight whoever had grabbed her, but came up short when she was met with the bright blue eyes of the water tribe boy.
“Thank you, for getting them to listen to me.” He gave her a small smile, though to her it looked more like a grimace.
She moved her arm out of his grip, “I hope I haven’t made a mistake by trusting you.”
“No, no, you haven’t” he stammered “Jet, the boy who attacked you yesterday, is planning on blowing up the dam, and I couldn’t stop that so I had to warn the village.”
“How long until that happens?”
He looked down at his feet, “I’m not sure, but it’s going to be very soon.”
She rolled her eyes, “Very helpful, well as you don’t know when it’s happening I need to go and get my belongings, and help my friend with our patient so, um, goodbye.”
She began walking away again, the boy might’ve said something else, but she was too busy focussing on getting to Ria’s house as quickly as possible.
Luckily, Ria had been in the crowd and heard what was happening, and was almost already finished packing her most essential healing herbs and other belongings, the woman they’d been treating sitting upright offering to help even if she was too weak for that. Ria looked up when she entered, ushering her to go and get what she needed before coming down to help her.
After running away from home, she had decided not to walk around with lots of her belongings, making this a simple task, she quickly stuffed her tunics in a bag, along with the sack of coins she used in emergencies. She strapped her dagger and sword to her side and fastened her mother’s locket around her neck before looking back at the room that had been her home for almost half a year now.
She sighed, there was no time to be sentimental and so with one last glance she rushed back down to the main room, Ria nodding at a bag for her to carry as she herself helped the old woman out of the house. They made quick work of getting out of the town, but once they reached the bridge, she could hear the old woman begging Ria to go and see if someone had made sure her goat-dog had been taken out of town by someone.
She called out for Ria to stop, she was conflicted of course about going back into the town when the dam could break at any minute, but she had a feeling this woman’s pet was her only form of companionship, and she would want someone to help her in the same way if the roles were reversed. So she looked at the old woman, giving her bags to Ria to hold onto, “Where would your goat-dog be?”
The woman smiled at her, “She will be in my home, next to the cabbage stand, her name is Kiona - thank you so much.”
She nodded at her, ignoring the protests of Ria, and ran into town, thankful for the lack of people as it made it easier to manoeuvre through the streets.
It didn’t take long for her to reach the woman’s home, and upon hearing barking from inside the building, she was glad she had made this decision - the woman loved this animal, and would be happy to have it safe in her arms again.
Kiona was smaller than she expected, her fluffy white fur covering her eyes and small horns barely visible through the thick fur, she pushed all thoughts out of her head and before she could give the animal a chance to protest, she picked her up and began running again. The animal in her arms didn’t seem to mind the violent movements of the run, only tensing up when there was a loud explosion to the side of them. Shit, the dam.
She watched the dam walls fall away, freezing at the sight of the terrifyingly large volume of water heading her way. There wasn’t enough time for her to make it to the bridge, so she looked around for anything that could help her.
Her eyes landed on a small alley, two strong walls creating the narrow space, she ran towards it, crouching down, and used her body to surround the small animal as much as possible, offering what little protection she could. And as she heard the approaching wave get closer, she prayed to all the spirits that this would hopefully be enough, that her journey wasn’t over yet.
She gasped when the water hit her from all sides, tightening her hold on Kiona as much as she could without hurting the small animal, and even when the force of the water began moving her away from the small alley, she didn’t let go of the animal, instead made sure it’s head remained above the water, even as the debris from buildings that had taken the brunt of the wave hit her body. She knew if she survived this, she would be in a lot of pain, and as her head went under water, something sharp scraped across her leg, causing her to open her mouth to gasp, only to be met with water entering her windpipe.
The feeling of being carried away by the water and the pain on her leg were the last things she remembered before blacking out.
———
Sokka was happy with himself, he had managed to help the town (with the help of the girl, but he was still the one to warn them to leave), and Katara had finally realised that Jet was an idiot. So as he sat at the reins of Appa, a smug smile on his face, he happily received the praises of Katara and Aang for saving the people in the earth kingdom town.
But the smile soon fell off his face as they passed over the small town, only a few buildings were still standing now, water surrounding them all - he knew he had made the right decision in warning the people of the town to get out, but he couldn’t help the guilt that surfaced as he looked at the devastation Jet had caused. He could tell Katara and Aang were thinking similar things to him, their light-hearted conversation suddenly stopping as they looked over the saddle, silence enveloping the small group.
Katara gasped, causing Sokka and Aang looked to her in confusion, her only response was to point at something, no someone, on the riverbank, seemingly unmoving. Sokka’s heart clenched in his chest and he immediately steered Appa down to the ground, startling the goat-dog that had been licking the face of the person on the ground.
Momo quickly went to the other animal and the trio followed suit, heading towards the body, as they got closer, it became clear it was a girl, and that she didn’t seem to be breathing, a large red gash on her leg leaking blood onto the rock beneath her.
They were close enough to see the girl’s face now and Sokka’s heart dropped when he recognised her, it was the fire nation girl who kept crossing his path. She should’ve left the town in time, she knew what was going to happen, and had even refused his help when he offered it, although there’s a chance she just didn’t hear him. He stood frozen for a minute, already blaming himself for the girl laying still in front of him, before common sense came back to him - he had grown up surrounded by water, the one thing they made sure all kids learnt at a young age was how to perform chest compressions in case someone drowned.
He fell to the floor beside her, angling her head to the correct position, before pressing down on her chest with his hands. He counted the movements in his head and when there was still no response from her, he tipped her head back, pinching her nose and bringing his mouth to hers to breathe in some air. But, when he moved away, there was still no response, so with the panic and guilt overtaking his brain he went back to compressing her chest, not noticing Katara’s hand on his shoulder until she pushed him out of the way.
He turned, ready to shout at her when he realised what she was doing, her eyes were closed as she moved her hand over the girl’s chest, locating the water in her lungs before moving it out of her in one swift movement.
Sokka swiftly moved towards the girl again as Katara bent the water back into the full river, the trio all smiling when she started coughing, even if it sounded uncomfortable it was much better than being dead.
Her eyes opened, revealing amber-coloured irises, and Sokka watched as they flicked between the three of them in confusion, before finally landing on Sokka, recognition coating her features.
“Oh great it’s you again.”
He scowled at her, missing the humour in her voice, “A simple thank you would suffice.”
She opened her mouth to reply but was interrupted by a cough from Aang, “You two know each other?”
Realising how close they still were, Sokka quickly moved away, ignoring how his cheeks seemed to heat up when he answered the avatar “Not really, um, she’s the girl Jet attacked in the woods, and then who vouched for me when I tried warning the villagers.”
It was now Katara’s turn to scowl at the girl, “She’s Fire Nation?”
“Technically ex-fire nation,” the girl piped up, looking around at the group, her face unreadable, “and don’t worry I don’t want to harm you or capture you, where’s Kiona?”
Sokka looked to Aang in confusion, only to be met with a shrug, but his unspoken question was answered by the bark of the goat-dog, the animal bounding towards her at the mention of its name.
A large smile broke out on the girl’s face when she saw the animal, letting it jump onto her to lick her face, and when she spoke it was in a way that is only ever reserved for babies or animals, and Sokka couldn’t help but think it was pretty cute.
“Kiona you’re such a good girl! Ria might kill me for risking my life to get you, but it was definitely worth it, and I bet you can’t wait to see your lovely owner, can you?” The animal wagged its tail in response.
“You risked your life for the animal?” Aang looked at her with respect, of course the resident pacifist didn’t focus on the fact that she was fire nation and instead that she saved an animal, but Sokka himself was once again shocked by the girl’s kindness - first the woman she wanted to heal and now the animal - he’d never met someone from the Fire Nation who seemed to actually care about others over themselves.
“Well yeah, water boy over here didn’t tell me when the dam was going to break, and the old woman who I assisted in healing was asking about Kiona here,” she once again smiled at the goat-dog, “so I went back to get her.” She shrugged her shoulders dismissively, putting the animal down so she could attempt to stand.
The adrenaline of coming back to life and making sure the goat-dog was okay had now worn off, and as she sat on the ground, her whole body ached and she knew she was going to have tons of bruises after this. Going to stand, she winced slightly as the movement caused her body to flare up in pain, but it wasn’t until she put her weight on her leg that she remembered what happened just before she blacked out.
A small cry left her mouth as she stumbled, she hadn’t felt pain like this in a while and it took all her willpower not to shed tears at the agony she was experiencing. She hadn’t even noticed the arms that had caught her from falling to the floor until the small, bald boy’s face came into focus in front of her.
“Are you okay?” He asked, worry coating his features.
It was weird, she so rarely experienced interactions with people who worried about her, and not only was this boy younger than her, but his tattoos looked like airbender tattoos. She had heard the stories that the avatar had returned, and now she was almost certain that he was the one who was helping her. What she didn’t understand was why? The Fire Nation had wiped out the Air Nomads, and the water tribe pair obviously didn’t like her, so why did he care?
She realised she hadn’t answered his question, too busy in her thoughts once again, so she quickly nodded, trying to straighten up and put the weight back on her leg again. Looking down at her leg she was shocked to see that the gash was about as long as her forearm, blood still seeping from the wound. Quickly ripping the hem of her tunic she tied the fabric above her knee as tightly as possible, hopefully slowing the blood as much as possible until she made it to Ria for help. Now, standing on her own two feet without falling over, she removed herself from the young boy’s hold, giving him a small smile in thanks.
She brought her hands to her sides, sighing in relief when she felt both her sword and dagger still attached to her belt, it would’ve definitely made her day worse if she had lost them, and she knew she was going to pray to the spirits in thanks that night - she had survived, along with Kiona and her weapons, so minus the almost dying thing, that was a successful day in her opinion, given the circumstances at least.
She tested her movement again, taking a step towards Kiona, ready to head back to the village when she was interrupted by the young boy, “Are you sure you should be walking on that leg? It looks very painful.”
“Thanks for the concern, but I’ll be fine - I just need to get back to my friend and she’ll help stitch me up and hopefully she managed to save some pain relief medicine from the house before the dam broke.”
She turned to the water tribe pair, they both had their arms crossed, and even with the scowl on their faces she could see slight concern in their eyes, and with how similar they looked in that moment, they must be siblings. What a weird little group, two water tribe siblings and the avatar - not something you see everyday.
“Um, thanks for the saving me thing, that was nice of you.” She cringed at how awkward she sounded, but how was she meant to talk to people who didn’t seem to like her at all?
“We wouldn’t just leave somebody to die,” the girl frowned at her, “even if you’re from the Fire Nation.”
The atmosphere around the group became awkward again at the reminder of where she was from, y/n cleared her throat, “Right, well thanks again, but I should probably go,” she glanced around the group, focusing on the tattooed boy as she continued speaking, “it was nice meeting you, Avatar, but you should probably go too, there’s a good chance the fire nation soldiers spotted you and I wouldn’t like it if you were caught because you helped me.”
She smiled at him again, ignoring the shock on the trio’s faces, and turned around to gain the attention of Kiona so they could leave, but before she got very far the water tribe boy stepped in front of her. Spirits, she just wanted to leave so she could treat her very painful injuries, was that too much to ask?
“How did you know he’s the avatar?” Really? This was important right now? She was almost ready to black out from pain and he wanted to have a conversation?
“He has airbender tattoos,” she pointed to her own forehead for emphasis, “and unfortunately the only airbender left is the avatar, now please can this conversation end, I need to get back to my friend.”
She tried to keep the irritation out of her voice, but apparently not as effectively as she hoped as the boy glared at her again, but luckily for her, still moved out of the way.
She had no idea how much blood she had lost now, but with the way her vision was beginning to fade in the corners of her eyes, she knew she needed to get back to Ria as fast as possible and hoped that she had the materials needed to treat her.
Her pace was slow as she began to walk away, putting as much weight as she could on her uninjured leg, Kiona following closely behind her.
“Wait!” She groaned, turning to see what the avatar wanted now.
“What’s your name?” He asked, a smile on his face.
“Y/n.” She smiled back at him despite her annoyance, she could tell he was the optimist of the group, and his energy was almost infectious.
“It was lovely to meet you y/n! Even if it could have been under better circumstances. I’m Aang and they,” he pointed at the water tribe siblings with his staff, “are Katara and Sokka.”
“Nice to meet you, and, um, thank you again for the help, but I really need to go now.” She gave them a small wave and left, hearing them do the same behind her.
When she reached the tree line, she leant against a tree, catching her breath, realising she was still soaking wet by the weight of the water on her clothes. Ignoring how tired she was, she took three steady breaths, focusing on the fire inside her, and with a hiss of steam she warmed up her clothes, drying them completely. She didn’t use her fire bending often, much preferring fighting with her sword and dagger, but she was still exceptionally skilled, as was expected of her growing up, and it was times like this she was thankful of her bending. With her clothes no longer weighing her down, it was easier to move, or limp really, back towards where the townspeople were gathered when she left them.
It took her slightly longer than she would’ve liked, exhaustion and pain slowing her down, but she finally spotted the large group of people, their faces sad as they looked at their ruined town. She spotted Ria almost straight away, her and the old woman were sat huddled together beneath a blanket, dejected looks on their faces.
That didn’t last long however, Kiona’s excited bark as she saw her owner breaking them out of their thoughts, and she couldn’t help but smile as the goat-dog ran towards the woman, any regrets she had about going back for the animal forgotten as the old woman laughed and hugged her beloved pet. Too distracted with the small reunion, she didn’t notice Ria until she was almost tackled to the ground by her older friend.
She yelped in pain at the sudden contact, and the healer quickly pulled away from the hug, frowning in concern as she scanned her body to look for the injury that caused the reaction, eyes widening when she saw the large gash on her leg, blood still coming out of the wound despite the improvised tourniquet y/n had applied.
“Shit, we need to get you to lie down so I can fix this.” Ria’s worried voice faded away into the background as unconsciousness swept her away for the second time that day.
(also if you hadnt guessed there will be a few time jumps and stuff and she doesnt join them until book 2)
