can you PLEASE share some of the books? or at least where to get em, bc im in desperate need of some good taxidermy books instead of rummaging trough random internet sites
Absolutely! I was compiling a list of what I've gathered over the years that I'll drop when I have a chance. After reading or thumbing through most of them, I have a top 10 recommended list as well of the most essential ones for learning taxidermy and animal processing.
I like to gather as much info as possible when I'm hyperfocused on something, and since most of this was either dirt cheap or free, I've collected quite a bit xD! Most of them are PDFs I found or purchased through ebay or PDF Drive (if you look up taxidermy on the site, a ton of free stuff comes up). Anything I couldn't find after several months of searching, I got used physical copies of or just got the physical ones for convenience.

no ok but like from tesilid's pov you spend your childhood subjected constraints on your life and suddenly this girl is exempt from those constraints and you can actually be frank around her. (and she gives you great food!) you recognise that she can be a really important person in your life and whenever you're having a particularly shit day you remember her and you can't wait to travel so you can meet her again but before you can she saves you at your worst moment yet again and promises that it's ok if you forget her because she'll find you. internally you might've been like 'why the fuck would i forget you but okay' but then she doesn't find you and you spend death upon death being betrayed and stepped on and having your spirit and humanity crushed and she still hasn't found you yet (i'm here, where are you?) and then you give up and then you find her but its too late then you give up worse then she finds you and you realise once again that in the time you've been apart she has dedicated her life to becoming a strong healer for you, the role you had always desperately needed in your expedition team, and also she's so strong that she can solo dungeons so you don't have to, and also while she very clearly wants you to sit back and relax while she does everything she is also mindful about respecting your autonomy and not making you feel useless, and also she would readily exchange her life for yours, where has she been all your lives? but she's here now,
how is tesilid supposed to be anything but completely obsessed with her. i love this romance plot they just keep finding ways to give the other even more reasons to be obsessed with them.
actually i need to spend time cracking ailette's head open too because she's also obsessed with tesilid but i can't actually figure out why. like yes being strong enough to survive was always a concern, but somehow her priority keeps going back to whatever will bring tesilid the most comfort. she chose the healer class for him, and only became a fighter too when she realised she needed it for survival.

man I am getting way too into my stupid sci fi world despite never being into futurist stuff and failing to make a satisfying knockoff Velvet for years. A few too many relevant themes and interests just kind of merge nicely with stuff from my real job and having a terrible boomer gerontocrat in the 2050s is endlessly entertaining

Tag your age if you wanna bc I was just thinking about how I have used floppy disks before (I'm 25 and used them in elementary computer lab) but my 22 y.o. brother hasn't which is so weird to me like 3 years isn't a long time at all to me

I love watching early episodes of Futurama; the year 3000, and people still have VHS tapes and floppy disks. Because like, the world at the time only had barely a hint of of the digital tech around today, just 24 years later. So even when the people working on the futuristic sci-fi show were coming up with wacky nonsense, they also used what they were familiar with. Which was VHS tapes and floppy disks. There is some kind of irony in there, and maybe also a weird metaphor too, because I'm nostalgic for a show about a fictional future which also contained many retro references to media that came before it, and as I watched the show over the years, I saw it slowly include more and more "modern" facts of the real future, that was actually the present

Credits:
Images for the poster set are taken from the manuals for the Kaypro and BBC Micro; thank you to folks who upload these online!
Fonts used in the textures are Nootrasim, Uni(versity) Llama, and Simlish Crayon.
-------------------------------------------------
Technical notes/known issues:
Sims’ hands slightly clip into the computers with angled keyboards; this is not something I can fix due to how the animations are set up.
The computers don’t have mice (they wouldn’t have had them at the time), so the Sims will move their hands around as if they were using an invisible mouse.
The BBC Micro computer has a medium decor slot on top -- perfect for cute plants, books, clutter, etc. In testing, I noticed that if you place something there that trails down the sides, Sims will not want to use the computer (you have to make them sit in the chair and then interact with it). Most items don’t seem to do this so I’m leaving the slot in - just know if you put trailing stuff on top, this might happen.
The cassette recorder has a decor slot in the perfect place to actually put the cassette tape in it, and I love it! I’d recommend picking the cassette tape you want before putting it in; once it’s in the recorder, I couldn’t figure out an easy way to get it out again. You can always delete the whole thing and re-place a cassette recorder.
-------------------------------------------------
Other notes:
TOU: Don't upload to paid sites or claim you made these. If you do recolor, you can include the mesh if you link back to me.
This is my first larger set and I'm kinda nervous! If you encounter any issues please message me on here and let me know.
I've also created a companion "further reading" post here, which goes into more detail about the research and references I used for these
⭐ Like my stuff? It's all free but it does take me time -- if you want to, feel free to leave a tip on Ko-fi. ⭐

I still believe the craziest form of computer program storage format from the 1980s is the cassette tape. Logical I get it but to store entire programs on little tape (that I only remember using to play music) is just crazy to me. Idk
Agreed, cassette tape for data storage was really clever. The concept had its heyday was the 1970s in a wide variety of encoding schemes for different computer platforms. It did persist into the 80s, mostly in Europe, while the US switched to floppy disks as soon as they were available for systems. The majority of my Ohio Scientific software is on cassette.
Tumblr media
Talking with UK vs. US Commodore 64 users in particular will highlight the disparity in which storage mediums that were commonplace. I've got a few pieces of software on tape for mainly the VIC-20, but I rarely bother to use it, because it's slow and annoying. To be fair, Commodore's implementation of data storage on tape is pretty rock solid relative to the competition. It's considered more reliable than other company's but Chuck Peddle's implementation of the cassette routines are considered quite enigmatic to this day. He didn't document it super well, so CBM kept reusing his old code from the PET all the way through the end of the C128's development 7 years later because they didn't want to break any backward compatibility.
Tumblr media
The big thing that really made alot of homebrewers and kit computer owners cozy up to the idea was the introduction of the Kansas City Standard from 1976. The idea of getting away from delicate and slow paper tape, and moving towards an inexpensive, portable, and more durable storage medium was quite enticing. Floppy disk drives and interfaces were expensive at the time, so something more accessible like off the shelf audio tapes made sense.
I've linked two places you can read about it from Byte Magazine's February 1976 issue below (check the attribution links).
You might recognize a familiar name present...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are a few ways to encode binary data on tape designed to handle analog audio, but the KCS approach is to have 1's be 8 cycles of 2400Hz tone, and 0's be 4 cycles of 1200Hz tone. I say cycles, because while 300 baud is the initial specification, there is also a 1200 baud specification available, so the duration of marks vs spaces (another way of saying 1's and 0's), is variable based on that baud rate. Many S-100 computers implemented it, as do a few contemporary proprietary designs.
The big 3 microcomputers of 1977 that revolutionized the industry (Apple II, Commodore PET 2001, and Tandy TRS-80 Model I) each have their own cassette interface implementation. It kept costs down, and it was easy to implement, all things considered. The Apple II and TRS-80 use off-the-shelf cassette deck connections like many other machines, whereas the original variant of the PET had an integrated cassette. Commodore later used external cassette decks with a proprietary connector, whereas many other companies abandoned tape before too long. Hell, even the original IBM PC has a cassette port, not that anybody bothered to use that. Each one used a different encoding format to store their data, rather than KCS.
Here's a sample of what an OSI-formatted tape sounds like.
And here's a Commodore formatted tape, specifically one with VIC-20 programs on it.
I won't subject you to the whole program, or we'd be here all day. The initial single tone that starts the segment is called the "leader", I've truncated it for the sake of your ears, as well as recorded them kinda quietly. I don't have any other tape formats on hand to demonstrate, but I think you get the idea.
You can do alot better than storing programs on tape, but you can also do alot worse -- it beats having to type in a program every time from scratch.

hey can i request ethan and reader who meet up in the typical “library spot” where people go to kiss or ykyk

there was this secret corner of the library that every blackmore student knew about. in a section filled with old vhs and floppy disks, dust coating every surface. even the librarians don’t bother with that area.
so a few years ago some juniors claimed that area as the naughty corner, stupid name, but gets the point across. people go back there to get handsy and suck face in private while still in public. kinky freaks.
and, you just so happen to be one of those people meeting in the old corner. you didn’t head straight to your destination, making a show of perusing the shelves of books you don’t care about. stopping only a few times, pretending to read the spines and summaries of stories that make you wish to sleep.
looking at your phone to check the time you saw a text from him and you smirked, “so needy,” whispering to yourself.
you left the history section and finally entered the abandoned section. “i’ve been waiting for you,” a faint whine from the male voice.
a mocking pout, “oh, my poor baby. didn’t mean to keep you waiting.”
dropping your bag with a soft thud you walked to ethan, who was sitting atop a desk with his hands between his spread thighs.
stepping into the small gap, ethan moved to wrap his long arms tight around your middle and pulled you impossibly close. not leaving an inch of space between your bodies. fingertips danced up ethan’s flexed biceps before snaking behind his neck. right palm resting at the collar of his polo with your left hand sinking into the curls at his nape.
“i’ve been missing you. wish you didn’t drop mathematics.” leaning his forehead into your collarbone, his arms holding even tighter.
you huffed a laugh as your nails scratched his scalp, “ethan you see me plenty outside of that one class we shared. we’re hanging out right now.” pressing two quick kisses onto his crown.
ethan took a big sigh, the air warning your skin, “but it’s where we met then became friends. and also where i got the courage to ask you on a date before slamming into a wall. and to this day i’m still shocked you still went after that scene.”
removing the hand from his curls, you moved to tick some unruly hair behind his ear. fingers tracking the curve of the warm skin, following the point of his jaw to his chin. loving eyes admiring the boy before you.
“well, i don’t know if you know this ethan but,” heaving a big sigh, “i got a thing for nerds. awkward boys really turn me on.” completely serious.
ethan couldn’t help but sputter a few low giggles, giving your body a slight shake. “weirdo.”
“it’s very true. you could be a peter parker in another universe. smart and awkward. hot.”
ethan smiled shyly, “well now your just kissing my ass.”
you hand curled a hold on his chin, keeping him in place as you leaned forward. mouth inches from touching, “not yet, pretty boy. not yet.”
and the sight of ethan’s eyes widening was such an award. feeling his throat take a deep gulp a cherry on top.

a/n: i wanted to write more but i kinda didn’t want to and also it would have been horrible smut.

A lot of younger folks find it weird and even hilarious that their elders are over-cautious -- dare I say, terrified -- about accidentally hitting the wrong button on their computer, like if they're not careful, they'll accidentally blow it up.
That's because younger folk have only ever used fairly idiot-proof computers. They've never known the joys of MS-DOS, where every floppy disk had to be formatted from the command line by typing FORMAT followed by the letter of the appropriate drive. And if you typed the wrong letter -- or even just forgot to type any letter -- before hitting enter, you reformatted your hard drive. That's right, you wiped everything on your hard drive, with one keystroke, in the course of doing a common, everyday task.
There were all kinds of other pitfalls. Like for example, foolishly starting to upgrade Windows without realizing that you had to first make sure certain files were in the correct path, and if they weren't, the install couldn't find them and it just ground to a halt, leaving you with a half-installed OS, which is the same as having no OS at all. (Ask me how I know.)
Mind you, people should be able to learn new ways of doing things, and they should understand that there are safeguards now that make those kinds of mistakes nearly impossible. But it's not that easy to let go of fear, and those early PCs really traumatized us. More than a few of us lost days, weeks, even months of work. Whole novels. So next time Grandma is kind of freaking out about hitting trash or install or whatever, have some pity. She's been through a lot.

seeing as ur cookie ocs/children (not sure what to call the little specimens) are,well,cookies-
If you could somehow (really no idea how you would) eat them, would they taste like anything in particular??
Oooooh~! A FUN ONE!!!
And for scale, I'm going to rate the edibility of each of my confectionary darlings on a scale of 1 to 10. starting with...
Horse Apple Cookie- 2/10
Tumblr media
Uncomfortably bumpy and bitter, downright unpalatable on the taste buds. I mean... You CAN eat him and not really suffer too much in the long wrong. But nobody would recommend it... And frankly, the constant screaming of conspiracy nonsense and the fact he hasn't showered in two weeks just lowers his grade by like 1 point.
HoneyCrisp Cookie- 9/10
Tumblr media
Actually tastes pretty good. Sweet and juicy, almost like a jolly rancher!
Grand Reef Cookie- 1/10
Tumblr media
Uuuuuh... Maybe in his prime he tasted like rainbow sherbet ice cream like his colorful corals would lead you to believe. But nowadays...? Raw sewage. Feels and tastes like biting into a moldy apple. Uncomfortably squishy and black, like tar. Guarantee you will get violently ill from trying to eat him... He only gets a point because he will be constantly comforting you and giving all these sympathetic and apologetic pats and hugs the entire time you're puking your brains out from tasting him...
Dr Prawn Cookie- 5/10
Tumblr media
Tastes as you'd expect. Shellfishy and meaty. But there is an uncomfortable crunch...
Sea Anemone Cookie- 4/10
Tumblr media
Apparently you CAN eat anemones... Weird, but I guess fried anemone is a delicacy to some regions, I don't know. Tastes like shellfish, but she's too smol to really even be considered a light snack. And frankly, why WOULD you wanna eat a face like that? She's just excited to meet a big friend~!
Gold Choco Cookie- 0/10
Tumblr media
Several problems would arise trying to chew on Goldie... Firstly, is trying to CHEW him; as his body is roughly 85% hard metal and high voltage wiring. He's hardly even dough at this point... And if you somehow managed to get by that, he tastes like oil and metal and leaves a buzz of static in your mouth. There's only a slight aftertaste of rich chocolate... But you'd have a better experience eating a chocolate-covered floppy disk before cracking a molar on his stale ass...

I've pulled a Callum Crown and Dial-Up'ed these fellas. Had this in my head for awhile and now I've drawn the scrybes if they were in the DT universe.
Grimora has an old typewriter for a head, of course, while running a small shop involving ghoulish items and even presenting pre-dial up collections for educational purposes. She would definitely get along with Gabby from the Phone Antique Shop down the street, have a nice cup of tea with the woman. She used to write obituaries back in the day, using both her head and quill to edit the papers, yet she moved onto opening her own shop as time passes by.
P03/Poe made designed its own monitor head fit to his needs, one of them being customizing icons to indicate who is currently fronting as he has DID. His prosthetic arm is actually Crown brand as he used to admire Callum Crown for a bit before working on his own things, owning a workshop to fix up tech and make his own gadgets. The stickers on his electric wheel chair were mostly from G0lly and even Unfinished Boss (the scratched doodles on the side of the chair.)
Leshy is, of course, the Leshy. How did the Dial-Up get to build a camera head onto his shoulders? Same reason how they managed to get BIGFOOT to have an object head during the Dial-Up. You know what they say: "If they could get Bigfoot to have an object head, they could definitely get Forest Peepaw". His camera head has some overgrowth there- which is good.
Magnificus has an antique rotary phone head he had customized in the past to his own liking. He is a street artist and also a hobo, yet still respected as an aspiring artist since he used to be quite the famous painter back in the days. He takes his current life as a boring yet deserved break but people refuse to leave him alone, wanting to know more about his works and most importantly the rumors of his past career. He has three fans who constantly approach him and ask numerous questions along with his criticism towards their own works.
Lonely Wizard, Pike Mage, and Goobert are huge wizard fans who have DnD sessions every now and then- hence the wizard hats. LW has a magic 8 ball for a head and is often known for its little performances involving singing and dancing, theater kid and whatnot. Pike has a Pike Weapon for a head which does raise the question if she's from the Dialtown Mob or not, often found talking to other weapon headed folks. Goobert has more of a rotary phone but shaped as a paint palette, having tried to customize his own head to match Magnificus' but it didn't turn out super well, he's an art student trying to paint.
Luke Carder has a Camcorder for a head, reflecting his career as a youtuber. Nothing has changed much as he's still the same guy who opens card packs.
Kaycee has a Floppy Disk Drive as a head and is also an indie game developer, she's doing her best in this dumpster fire of a town. Hah. Get it? Cause-- yeah.
More to come involving these AND working on Scrybing the Dialtown folks- making them Inscryption themed >:]
