Speaking about tension and conflict to build romance:
Bumbleby's conflict was Adam stalking Blake, and Yang upset by her leaving because Blake was scared, but gradually more relieved as she proved that she would always stayed by her side and fight together
Renora's conflict was Ren being stubborn and almost risking his life to a grimm that killed both his parents and Nora stopping him, leading them to a better strategy attack
~
We already saw Oscar suggesting Ruby to tell Ironwood the truth, maybe Oscar will struggle to 'share her burden' because she's like her sister and doesn't like being vulnerable? Or maybe it will be about the merge and we'll have a parallel to Blake in V1 talking about "the man with two souls fighting for control" ?
Of the main three ships, they all had a big tension and conflict leading up to V8, and then had a secondary one just by virtue of the separation in Atlas.
Yes BB's conflict was Adam plus Blake running away while Renora's was Ren's tunnel vision in v4... but then in V8 Yang is worried that Blake thinks less of her for prioritizing Mantle over Amity. And Ren and Nora are having a conflict of ideals AND miscommunication.
Tumblr media
For Rosegarden, their conflict started with not agreeing on how to handle Ironwood and then became stretched out by ending up on opposite teams while Atlas was falling. The difference between RG and the other ships is that eVERYONE ELSE GOT TO STAY REUNITED AT THE END OF V8, BUT RG DIDN'T. 😭😭😭
I have a feeling the rest of their conflict in the Vacuo arc is going to have multiple layers and be very personal to their individual characters. For starters, there's a matter of how to sort out leadership. Ruby used to be head of the team and became the symbol of hope for All of Remnant after her broadcast... but in her absence, Oscar will have stepped up to the plate in her place. There's going to be some fumbling to get them back on the same page again to a point where they are properly sharing the weight of their burdens together.
Then we know that Oscar probably thinks she died! :'D Which, in tandem with his attachment, admiration, and protectiveness of her in the past, sets him up perfectly to not want to lose her again. Be that struggling with sticking too close, keeping his distance from not wanting to get too attached again (too bad boy, you can't run from this), or a mix of both... it's anyone's guess how he'll handle it.
Tumblr media
We also know, thanks to Neo, just how important Oscar is to Ruby and that the thought of losing him is something she literally could not handle. So there is almost certainly going to be a mutual protectiveness going on there. they can have a LITTLE codependency, as a treat. /lh
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also have VERY SOLID SETUPS for their individual character arcs mirroring each other so strongly. And it's impossible for those themes to not be explored at this point.
From their very introductions, they both address each other's core conflicts with their first words to each other.
Oscar: Woah, you... have silver eyes.
Silver eyes being symbolic of her burden as Salem's adversary and the mirror that reflects humanity's hope back onto darkness.
Ruby: Who... are you?
Oscar being the next (and likely final) Ozcarnation who's entire character arc is a struggle of identity.
Tumblr media
Oscar's "I always knew I wanted to be more than a farmhand... but this? Who would ask for this?" to Ruby's "I wanted to be the hero, like the stories that my mom read to me."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oscar's "I thought the idea of falling through Remnant into a new world was... exciting. I never understood why she was so sad when she finally made it back home." to Ruby's "I don't want to be me anymore."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ruby's "What if you could be anyone?" to Oscar's "I'm just going to be another one of his lives, aren't I?"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
god the way they've written this story... i sincerely don't understand how people can watch ALL of this, all the moments i didn't mention cause i'm too lazy to turn this thread into another essay, and still say they don't see it. 😭
however their conflict is handled, i know i'm going to be very not normal about it every step of the way and i'm so freaking excited

The Emperor-Verse: RWBY: Saints of Remnant, a reimagined AU(More details in Keep Reading!)
Tumblr media
Once there was a world by the name of Omnibus. Created by the supreme deity The Author Allfather through the mysterious entity The Storyteller, this world was composed of four holy and mighty kingdoms, ruled by The Author’s Patron Saints whose reign protected the people, human and faunus alike, with their mighty armies, hunters, and their own holy powers from barbarian hordes, and the hordes of The Grimm who were the incarnations of hatred of the fallen seraph Grimmel The Black and his fellow fallen angels
In the dreadful world-shattering war of Ragnarök, the glorious age of Truth, Goodness, and Beauty, and the days of Romance, Heroism Adventure, and Eucatastrophe came to a tragic end.
Now all that remains is the world that is Remnant
But there is a prophecy made by Ozma The First Time Wizard before his death at the hands of The Witch-Emperor, that one day the bloodlines of the original Patron Saints and the families betrothed to them will return to take up these powers, rally armies of the righteous, vanquish the darkness and restore the holy kingdoms and Omnibus and reign over them once more.
Sinners will become Saints
Legends shall be restored and new Legends will be born
And what was a Remnant, Shall Be Whole Again.
But until then, the Hunters lead a struggling battle against the Grimm while the modern kingdoms suffer under corruption of all kinds, both to the benefit of darker forces who have horrifying intentions for the world.
Cue Ruby Rose and her older half-sister Yang Xiao Long, they are about to enter Beacon Academy after being approved by the eccentric Professor Ozpin Pine along with the heiress Weiss Schnee and the introverted faunus Blake Belladonna forming team RWBY
Ozpin has also enrolled a few other students and transferred others.
The former forming team JNPR, and the latter being Team SSSN of Haven Academy
Ozpin seems to have his eye on all of them, but what for?
Heavily inspired by CS Lewis's series The Chronicles of Narnia
Main Ships Contained:
RoseGarden
BlackSun
Iceberg/Arctic Water
Arkos
Renora
and some other ships
Also will contain unorthodox reimagining such as Adam Taurus(He's an initial antagonist turned good) and the White Fang and Jacques Schnee and the SDC with their Canon!Counterparts replaced with substitutes among other things
Currently the concept is in the works in a series of notes.
Details of the Emperor-Verse
Now I'm sure there's some questions you probably are all asking which I assume are the same questions as my blog
“Why are you using your Religion?”
Mostly due to it being a strong foundation, notably theology, for most of my stories, there are many strong foundations of storytelling, religion, history, you can even fantasize science if you put the imagination, time, and effort into it.
After doing some soul searching and listening to the Narnia books on Audible, it became another important element in making this au and I might include elements of CS Lewis’ Space Trilogy
This AU is set in my fictional Multiverse The Emperor-Verse which Narnia is implied to exist in, or I should say had existed in(its set after The Last Battle)
“Isn’t this kind of entitled and disrespectful?”
Disagreement isn’t necessarily malicious, and entitlement is not inherently bad if its your opinions and subjective feelings which people are entitled to.
Tolkien was heavily inspired by his distaste for how Shakespeare handled certain concepts, such as the Ents when he was upset and dissatisfied that there were no walking talking trees in the Enchanted Fortest of Macbeth, and the Valar Aule the Smith and the origin of the Dwarves make him something of an Anti-Prometheus
Not to mention Philip Pullman, the author of His Dark Materials Trilogy, made it out his distaste how CS Lewis made the Chronicles of Narnia and his overall beef with Christianity, and nobody seems to take issue with that.
I’m not saying the direction RWBY went with V3 or Pyrrha and the rest of the cast potentially ending tragically in some way or another is objectively bad, it was just not my taste
And I am not saying every normal RWBY fan/RWDE person who liked it is an elitist about it nor are all of them trying to insult me and attack me personally or say my ideas are bad
Nor I’m not trying to change canon or its “trajectory” , nor am I doing this to spite Monty, especially when I never knew the guy. This is a difference in handling ideas and concepts.
I’m doing my RWBY AU, which will most likely be revamped into an original story since it takes a whole different directions with the characters and world, but it's mostly because with post V3 and now in retrospect I saw what this world, characters, ships and other ideas could have been all in a story I believe is worth telling. And I was disappointed that it wasn’t.
I mean yeah it's also due to personal tastes and preferences and subjective feelings, at least I’ve been told, but I also try to integrate that in a meaningful way.
So I hope you all enjoy what I have to offer, which will most likely be put on AO3 and FanFiction.Net, and who knows, I might get a few artists to commission to redesign some characters or illustrate some scenes if anyone is up for it.

White Knight Time Travel: Do Weiss and Jaune try and nudge anyone together at all, since the events that bring them closer together in canon are likely butterflied away?
Hmmm, this is a tricky one
I think probably not. They’ve both had enough of people manipulating them, from multiple sources, I don’t think they’d do that to their friends
It helps that most of the “relationships” between their friends were already pretty well established at Beacon, so they wouldn’t need to intervene anyway
You already know about Armored Angel. Renora are obviously already a thing since before Beacon, even if they haven’t gotten there yet. And the bees are… well, they’re the Bees. They were inevitable as soon as Blake chose Yang to be her partner
It’s Nuts and Dolts that might be tricky
Weiss and Jaune both know how much Penny means to Ruby, and vice versa. Jaune in particular (woo trauma) really wants to make sure the two end up being friends like they should be
Obviously Stray/Black and White don’t go exactly the same, since keeping cover aside Weiss REFUSES to treat Blake the way she did. Being mean to her friends she can excuse, but she draws the line at racism. Woo character development
Blake does still end up running, it was bound to come out eventually and no amount of understanding from RWY is going to overcome the years of trauma Adam left her with. At least not that quickly
They go look for her, of course. Much more quickly than they did last time since Weiss now knows what’s going on. Plus there’s the whole Torchwick element and she (and Jaune) are NOT letting any ally of Neo near their friends
They go looking for her, and if Weiss makes sure to lead Yang away so Ruby can talk to “that strange girl they met yesterday” then that’s her business

took them ten years to give jnpr star signs and they still got them wrong. what would you give them instead?
jaune: canon pisces  ➝ pisces.
pisces for jaune actually isn't too inaccurate, i think the emotional side & the duality of who he is & who he wants to be fits the character they wanted to portray with jaune well. the only thing that trips it up is they're meant to have a sensual side & jaune feels as sensual as wet cardboard, that boy is an awkward cat through & through.
it's also interesting that pisces is ruled by neptune, considering his canon connections to neptune & how it was over a romantic conflict. very interesting.
nora: canon gemini  ➝ leo / aries.
while a gemini isn't bad for nora, it's not the most accurate & there's a lot of conflict between the descriptors for this zodiac versus what we get for nora in canon. it's also based on the supposed "first appearance" of thor which is also wrong because he debuted in august 1962 which would make her a leo / virgo dependent.
as for her being a leo, it would mean she was defined more by her compassion & big hearted-ness with others than whatever "loud" personality she has which really isn't that loud considering other characters in canon. even nora as an aries centers her passion & motivation in regards to her friends & their mission.
pyrrha: canon taurus  ➝ cancer.
pyrrha as a taurus is just wrong: while she can be determined of her own destiny & self sufficient, there's nothing about her that says volatile, stubborn or hates change as a person. even other traits like conflict with authority or hating being given rules doesn't fit her because of how we see her handling her interactions with the oz squad.
however, pyrrha as a cancer fits far better imo. not only are they one of the most personable & sweet star signs but her diplomatic nature & loyalty to her friends defines pyrrha's character. cancers are also defined by their selflessness which is one of pyrrha's main motivators throughout her personal arc with the maiden powers.
ren: canon cancer  ➝ cancer.
ren is also very much applicable as a cancer & is probably the most accurately cast in this list. male cancer's being defined as homebodies who enjoy slow & steady relationships with no surprises, his sensitive nature also comes into play with how we see ren handling being pushed on his boundaries w/ nora in v7 onwards.
as a character defined on emotions due to his semblance & his conservative nature in canon: cancer also fits through his control of his own emotions & how he can perceive others.
as an add on, the compatability between these canon zodiacs & the "canon" relationships are awful. arkos as a pisces / taurus mix just ends up butting heads with the taurus' apparent "unchanging" nature versus the flexibility of the emotional pisces.
renora also falls flat due to the incompatibility between a gemini & cancer, as finding a middle ground between their traits is highly challenging & they struggle to get past the communication issues.
hilariously, the most compatible match ups with this canon designation of their zodiacs is valkos (taurus/gemini) & martial arcs (cancer/pisces.)

Light spoilers I guess for volume 9 under the cut:
Since the subject of slowburns has been brought up, I want to give proper credit to probably the longest running one: Ruby’s break. Like BB and Renora are ofc up there too since happening from like v1; but Ruby’s break has been going from arguably the Red trailer since I’d count her visiting Summer’s grave as part of it. I find it funny seeing ones thinking it’s only started happening in v9 or even 8 (no shade just I find it amusing, like ones saying their favs are Penny and/or Pyrrha going into v3 and you know what’s coming vein amusing); it’s like nah take a look back at like v2 for some cracks forming and 3 for sure broke those open with 4-7 adding even more in subtler aspects. No particular order cause I’m listing them as I think of them:
Holding Penny’s secret
Being the one that confronted Cinder (though she didn’t know her identity at the time cause masked)
Everything that went down with Yang, because of the setup against her and seeing her affected by it
Penny’s death followed by Pyrrha’s later
Beacon’s fall
Yang’s depression
Her team being broken apart
Seeing Jaune and the rest of JN_R’s depression over Pyrrha
Dealing with her pain over the loss Pyrrha and Penny’s
Finding the dying huntsman
Seeing Ren having to deal with “Nuckles”
Betrayal by a headmaster
Coming face to face with Raven her mom’s teammate
Coming face to face with Cinder again
Seeing Jaune throw himself at Cinder in a self-sacrificial way
Qrow’s alcoholism
Being hit with the effects of the Apathy
Being forced to clash against Atlas authorities in Mistral
Having to think about all those she loves and wants to protect to power her Silver Eyes, but slipping into “depression alley” till finally being able to stick to the good (which actually probably serves as one of the nudges about her mental state and burden)
Finding out the truth of the world and just how big of a weight is on her shoulders. Like going from carrying a baseball to actually it being a skyscraper
And I’m sure I missed some or plenty cause I was going more for a rough idea. Regardless once again RWBY loves it’s slowburns and putting in small details/seeds that pay off later. v9 like with BB has just made things like Ruby’s break more blatant.

I'm a boring basic bitch, so who would you ship with Jaune?
Full disclosure, I think Jaune is bi (or at least bicurious) and hasn't quite figured it out yet. With that in mind...
Arkos is my number one Jaune ship, no contest. It's a classic, and never mind that Pyrrha was done dirty.
I also really like Guard Dogs, Jaune and Marrow's dynamic throughout the Atlas arc was cute and funny and I enjoyed their interactions. The only problem is that they're both subs, so determining whose penis opens up to accept the other one's penis can be difficult at times.
I'm actually quite partial to Dragonslayer as of Volume 8, I wasn't really a fan of this ship beyond aesthetic appreciation at first but their scenes in Volume 8 really convinced me that these two have a genuine bond. Yang's been remarkably supportive of Jaune ever since, like, Volume 2, and I think their personalities are pretty compatible. Can't say their chemistry in canon is explicitly romantic, given Yang's focus on Blake, but they obviously care for each other and I think a writer could build on that in a very believable way. Also, I'm a huge proponent of bi Yang, let her have a hot boyfriend and a hot girlfriend.
I know some people don't like the actual ship name, mostly because it carries connotations of Jaune taming/owning/conquering Yang, and there are definitely people who really buy into that and portray the relationship (and Jaune's relationship with other girls, for that matter) in really gross ways, but I actually think it's funny in an ironic way because anyone with a functioning brain cell who's spent five seconds thinking about their established characterization knows that Yang would run Jaune over like a locomotive. If anyone's getting conquered, it's our resident himbo.
Also, if you capitalize the wrong (right) letter, the ship name turns into a sex joke, which is important to me because I have the mental and emotional maturity of a middle schooler.
White Knight was arguably my least favorite Jaune ship early on, and Beacon-era White Knight just does not do it for me, but I'm actually coming around on Atlas-era White Knight. Part of it is a "pair the spares" thing that comes from the emphasis on Bumbleby and the way it parallels Renora in the Atlas Volumes, as well as the hints of Nuts and Dolts we get in that same Kingdom, but also I feel like Weiss and especially Jaune are a lot more emotionally mature now. Jaune had a lot of stuff to work through, what with the whole toxic masculinity and not really knowing how to talk to girls thing, but he's come around and they feel like people who actually trust and like each other now as opposed to people who happen to be in the same friend group.
Martial Arcs (I think this is the name for Jaune x Ren?) is also very nice, even if I don't particularly like splitting up Ren and Nora. They're clearly very close, we get some nice angst and conflict in Volume 8, and they have a deep heart-to-heart discussion while Ren is naked and wrapped in a towel, thus making it impossible for me to view any of their interactions as anything other than homoerotic. Adding Nora into the mix is also a nice option, she deserves two boyfriends who will love her and each other.
Jaune x Neptune is inherently funny to me because I think having the two characters voiced by the main writers kiss would be funny and would probably make a lot of people mad for a lot of different reasons.
Not a big Lancaster fan, Jaune and Ruby have always just felt like friends to me. I like their relationship in a platonic sense but they just do not seem to have chemistry to me.
Knightshade is another one I'm not particularly partial to, given that Jaune and Blake have so little interaction in canon, to the point where seeing Blake hug Jaune when they reunited in Volume 6 genuinely shocked me because they've never seemed like anything other than people who happen to run in the same circles. I can't even test whether they have chemistry of any kind together because that hug was genuinely the first time I could remember them directly interacting, and by that point CRWBY is clearly gearing up to make Bumbleby canon. Like, they seem compatible, based on their personalities, but who the hell even knows because the writers seem to have an aversion to letting Blake just interact with her friends unless they're part of her specific plotline or her love interest of the day. No, I'm not still upset that it took us 8 Volumes for her to get a meaningful conversation with Ruby, I have no idea what you're talking about.
Still think the Gigachad Jaune shit does a disservice to his character.

The fact that crwby decided to show the scrip (which if im not wrong had never been done before) exacly in the moment ruby heared penny then other moments (i mean wouldn't a fight scene make more sense so we would see how they turn the text into a scene) is seems very suspicius, it look like they wanted us to know that this was penny for some reasons.
Nope it has been done before, during Volume 8 they showed the script for the Blake and Ruby discussion before the Hound attacks, and they also showed the Renora moment. So them showing the script isn't new, however I agree that showing the script for this moment is pretty weird, because literally everyone in the comments was like "it was Penny ???", like no one has been able to hear who it was before and having this confirmation is kinda interesting. At first I truly thought it was Yang calling for her, but Penny ? Why Penny ? I mean the more I think about it the more I'm confused and think it's WEIRD AAAH
They're probably cooking something >:|||

Rosegarden, Vacuo, and Relationship Arcs in RWBY
When I think of relationship arcs in RWBY, volumes that come the mind the most are V2(Arkos), V4(Renora), and V6(Bumblebee)
In that they are the volumes when it can be assumed mutual feelings have been gained from ____ and ____.
Tumblr media
Obviously, Ruby and Oscar can’t become a couple immediately, however looking at how CRWBY handles certain relationships, should they go down the RG route, it’ll likely go something like this....
Characters Being Haunted, Conflicting with their own way of doing things and their friends being A Good Counter before both realize there feelings
Arkos:
1.Jaune feeling down about his lack of abilities and Pyrrha being motivation to improve
2.Pyrrha feeling at ease with Jaune for giving her a place where shes not put on a pedestal being haunted by isolation as a pedestal-conflicting with her usual way of being impressive huntress
3. Jaune becomes closer to Pyrrha in V3
Renora:
1.Nora being afraid as a kid and Ren being motivation to become more positive
2.Ren having motivation to control his emotions after being haunted by bad memories-conflicting with his usual way of being the calm one
3. Ren becomes closer in V4 through reflection
Bumblebee:
1,Blake having issues with the White Fang and Yang countering her self-destruction
2.Yang being let known that Blake won’t stay away being haunted by her trauma after facing Adam-conflicting with her usual way of being the strong one
3. The audience can assume Yang and Blake started realizing their feelings after the issues from V3
Each point is emphasized usually in events for the characters where things become more stressful for them before both parties realize that they have feelings for the other.
Tumblr media
Regardless of how Vacuo goes, everything done after would most likely be a part of the final stretch where arcs would be finishing up rather than developing.
Based on how the extremes of other characters went, down Ruby’s would align as well with something she wishes to escape from specifically different from the others characters.
Ruby being Haunted and it conflicting with her outward appearance of being the caring one
Ruby’s caring for others would most likely be challenged
Tumblr media
Thus, IF
they went the RG route, Oscar would have to allow Ruby to be that caring person by directly or indirectly dealing with personal issues.
Ruby did this for Oscar already in V5. Of course, Oscar is also proactive in communicating with Ruby.
Also they would need to have a chance to hang out, probably most likely would be since Oscar and Nora for example probably have jobs already in Vacuo, Ruby and Oscar decide to team up after the gang together on the island leave

Are there any ships you find cute or hilarious? I don’t ship Knightshade (Lancaster shipper) but I find it both funny and a bit cute because it says Blake is exclusively attracted to blondes and decided to choose Jaune over everyone else. Her options were muscular blonde, muscular blonde, and dork blonde and choose the dork. It also has a lot of fics on Fanfic.net that are good which made me unronically enjoy it. Also it has one of the coolest ship names.
I also find Sunflakes (Weiss/Sun) adorable. It’s just cute and a I really want more fics of it.
Honestly? Probably Ladybug is the closest that comes to that for me. I don't actively ship it, but I fnd it charming and cute when i see it. Most other ships I'm either actively against (eg. Bees, WR, Renora, lancaster, white knight, emberald), don't care about (eg. arkos, emercury, nuts & dolts), don't trust 90% of fndm to handle with care (eg. monochrome, pretty much any Ilia ship), or that I'm a hardcore shipper of (eg. Freezerburn, Gauntlets & Greaves, Taiqrow).
But ladybug's cute af. Love them
Tumblr media
I mean: the best scene in rwby's best episode? Love it (unlocking your superpowers for a loved one in jeopardy is a time-honoured trope)
Tumblr media
How good their team move looks? love that too (we were robbed when it didn't get a card in Amity Arena)
There's just something about them that works. Do I actively ship them? No. Are they the second best team rwby ship for me? 100%.

okay, so after about a week or so of feverish fixation, i have a 16,669 (nice) word long document that consists of:
a first chapter that's about 4k, complete with all the schnee angst i did not know i needed, schneebling banter, firm hcs on schneebling age gaps, roughly canon compliant implied emotional and physical abuse, and too many butlers probably
a second chapter beginning which was supposed to be part of chapter one until i rewatched the white trailer and reworked chapter one around it, which massively expanded the chapter to the aforementioned 4k until i needed to cut it off at the knees
20 more chapters of outline, including excellent dialogue, slapstick shenanigans, rwbyverse vampire lore, angsty renora backstory, hints of an ot3 (remember who you're talking to here), pining, no rigid pov-flipping structure, characters being high off their (gay) asses, surprisingly little blood (weiss is neat okay), and a surprisingly shaky grip on number 1 blorbo's characterization in relation to volume 1 because she really is just comic relief for a hot minute and uh. i kind of need her emotional intelligence to shine here and NOW rather than get skimmed, canon events happening slightly to the left, also a lot of gay pining and denial of feelings and hands, hands, hands, gay hands!!!!
multiple snarky comments aimed at myself in the margins
a surprising lack of yang puns thus far but there are some good roasts at weiss' expense
library as refuge and reading as plot! (no one is surprised)
a functional beacon academy class structure, especially since i reread after the fall and stumbled upon an actual time table that actually fits my made up one and also makes me want to work out the professors' schedules based on a minimum 4 cohorts of students... hhhhrngh
i have no idea when this will be posted! how did i suddenly end up with 4 rwby wips????

Hi! What's your thoughts on why that specific group of character fell to the Ever After? I think they're the ones who grieved the most after Beacon and this is gonna be a bookend for that, while the Vacuo characters have a different narrative going on on their own. Not to say Ren and Nora didn't grieve after Beacon, but they were used to loss and both times have resolved their arc in a separate narrative: both of them slaying the source of their trauma in vol 4 and now Ren having realized his growth while Nora is going to realize hers.
Hi!
I am gonna get this chance to also properly apologize for not having answered your other ask yet :''') It is in my draft, but I still did not find the time to work on it.
Anyway, as for this ask, I understand where you are coming from, but I am not sure I 100% agree. Sure, grief is gonna be a major theme next volume (and in general it is a key theme for the story as a whole), but I disagree it is exclusive only of the characters that fell. For example, grief is a key theme in Ren and Nora's arc, while I would not say it is so prominent in Blake or especially Weiss.
Just quickly thinking at the characters stuck in Vacuo, we have:
Renora - their whole background is about losing a whole town and their parents. Moreover, they lost Pyrrha and now think they lost Jaune. They keep losing their family and end up always counting on each other.
Emerald - she has just lost Hazel and this loss and grief has yet to be unpacked.
Winter - oh boy... she has lost in 1 day Ironwood (father-figure), Penny and Weiss (little sisters). Her last scene in volume 8 screams grief.
In general, all the characters in Vacuo are gonna grieve the protagonists. Similarly, self-discovery is another theme shared by all characters equally and the trailer of volume 9 has made it abundantly clear:
What are you?
In short, self-discovery and grief are key themes for the whole story hence they permeate everyone's arcs and not just a specific set of characters'.
I think RWBY + J fell simply because they need more focus than others next volume. To be more specific, RWBY are almost always the ones involved in strange magic shenaningas (see Jinn in volume 6) since they are the titular characters. Every time a male lead tags with them according to character arcs. In volume 6 it was Oscar because Jinn's story had a specific value for him and Oz. This time it is Jaune to unpack what he did in the finale of volume 8. In general, it is also probable characters who are on the island need to interact with each other. As for Neo, I think she fell to drive Ruby's conflict. She is linked to her and she can work as a perfect foil to our girl ;)
Moreover, Ruby and Oscar needed to be separated this volume imo because of their inside/outside motif. On the one hand Ruby's heroine journey leads her to explore her own interiority. On the other hand Oscar's hero journey leads him to go out of his own head and to explore the world outside. Ruby externalizes, while Oscar internalizes hence they are challenged in opposite ways. Ruby falls into a world who mirrors her own head (Alice), while Oscar faces the real world with all its complexity (hopefully like the Little Prince).
Anyway, I really think they just wanted the girls + another MC to fall, so that they can focus on this specific set of characters. Apart from Oscar, the other characters stuck in Vacuo are either secondary protagonists (Renora and I would say Em too), important non-protagonist characters (Winter) or side characters (the Schnees + the Happy Huntresses). Usually, mains are gonna experience the most significative journeys in stories.
Thank you for the ask!

I figured I’d do the ship meme, but I don’t have any proper photo editing program on hand right now and its really not worth the trouble to set one up just for this so I’ll just type my answers up. I’m more comfortable with this format anyway.
Ship I fell in love with at first sight: I don’t think I have one. Despite the fact that I chose to give the show a chance because of the Bees, I binged up to Volume 7 without giving much thought to shipping, instead just following along with the show until I was caught up.
Ship that you didn’t like at first but now you do: I don’t think I’ve been with this show long enough for anything to happen for me to change my opinions about any particular ship. It’s only been about two years and one Volume since I started.
Ship that you used to like but now you don’t: Same answer as above.
Favourite popular ship: White Rose (Ruby ❤️ Weiss)
Favourite rarepair: Probably Gemstones? (Ruby ❤️ Emerald) Is that the correct name for it? I don’t have any strong feelings for it, someone pointed out Ruby blushing to Em’s comment in V3 and I thought, “what if Ruby had a little crush on her back then?”
Favourite controversial ship: Gemstones might be the closest I have to be considered a “controversial ship”. The more obvious examples I can think of I am not into for various reasons.
Ship that you want to become canon the most: White Rose. Although, I think the show already has plenty of romantic subplots between the Bees and Renora, so I might prefer that they simply leave certain possibilities open. These characters are all still very young, not all of them are going to end up starting lifelong relationships before they even hit their early 20s.
Your comfort ship: Frosen Steel, (Ruby ❤️ Weiss ❤️ Penny) my three favourite girls deserve all the extra love, especially Penny.
Ship that deserves more attention: I don’t have a specific ship in mind but I think the show could do with a significant m/m ship. This is not for me though, I’ve never been able to enjoy them myself, but others will. I think it’d be great if Jaune, Oscar or Qrow were given a possible male love interest to get close to, again I don’t have any specific candidates in mind since it’s not something I’d be personally invested in.

i know that i am far from the first person to say it, but i really am disappointed thinking abt the wasted potential in nora’s story arc in volume 8.
[more under the cut, but disclaimer, i am mostly rambling]
like, before vol. 8, i didn’t really care much for nora either way. i thought renora was fine & a good background ship, and sometimes nora got a laugh out of me, other times i thought she was annoying, but in general i just was pretty ambivalent abt her and wished she got some more character development which she never seemed to (besides for a little bit in vol. 4, though that was more of ren’s arc than hers, but still i will take what i can get. it’s probably my favorite part of vol. 4 considering mostly i find 4 & 5 to be very boring)
then in vol. 8 they sort of tried to give her her own character arc! i thought it was sort of weird timing & kind of sudden but hey! i’ll take what i can get. and it was also a sign of the writers trying their best & remedying some past mistakes (they did this with cinder, too, trying to fill in the blanks by giving a character arc now - no matter what i feel abt these characters, i do appreciate this. better late than never, right?)
but like a lot of other aspects of rwby, nora’s story arc suffered from bad writing and lack of direction. it could’ve been much better thought out. it started out strong, with nora’s feelings of not knowing who she was and her worth when she is not with ren - which makes sense, considering those two characters have been joined at the hip & a package deal since vol. 1, but with the circumstances of the plot in vol. 8, they finally separated. even the fact that she talked abt these feelings with weiss and blake was really good in my opinion, because in some way it showed that she was close enough with these other teammates of hers that she could talk abt these feelings.
then she goes maximum  because she thinks what she is good at is “be strong & hit stuff”. i have mixed feelings on this because while i do think that this was a cool scene and was very crucial to this character arc, we have never seen nora having a limit on her powers before (or at least i don’t think we have?) considering she has been hit by lightning multiple times & also lightning shots from dust, but considering vol. 8 tried to mess with multiple characters’ semblances i was willing to put up with it.
the real pinnacle moment of her arc was, while injured and recovering, penny is getting taken over by watson’s interference, and nora is able to comfort penny and help her with the “it’s just a part of you- don’t forget about the rest” moment. that was probably my favorite moment of all of vol. 8. it was really meaningful and emotional in a way that i don’t think the rest of the volume managed to successfully do and the framing of the scene was fantastic. it showed a new side of nora, where she is using her own struggles to empathize and help her teammate and friend. really great stuff.
from then on the arc kind of... fizzles out?
my least favorite aspect of nora’s arc is the fact that they use her getting injured as a reason why ruby’s team doesn’t really do anything else until after they are reunited with yang’s team.
they try to conclude it with her and ren’s reconciliation and her going “i need time on my own to figure out who i am without you” kind of thing. but then they don’t take the excellent opportunity for her to be someone who falls at the end of vol. 8? instead, she and ren are one of the very few characters that make it to vacuo! if she had fell instead of jaune (or they both could’ve fallen) you really could’ve had her go on more of a journey of self-discovery without ren by her side. OR! ren could’ve fallen and nora could’ve made it to vacuo. she wanted time by herself to figure herself out, but how would she react to knowing that she will only ever be by herself now that (she thinks) ren is dead? it could’ve been some compelling stuff!
the biggest waste of potential is the fact that nothing comes of her interaction with penny. for such a pivotal moment in her arc, nora and penny really don’t have a meaningful connection for the rest of the volume?
penny’s death was already a really badly written moment meant more for shock value. in my opinion, her dying and making winter the new winter maiden was a big waste of future story potential and made the fact that penny even came back at the beginning of vol. 7 a real waste of time (if penny hadn’t been brought back in the first place we would basically be at the same place we are in now. penny would be dead & winter would’ve been the winter maiden. nothing really changed much abt winter to warrant her getting the maiden power now instead of earlier. she would’ve just had a change of heart and left ironwood to join the main cast as the winter maiden at the same time as the heroes left ironwood instead of afterwards.) it would’ve been so much more meaningful if, after her interaction with nora, penny decided to make nora the winter maiden. it would’ve been a change of pace and actually made her character arc MEANT something. her feelings, her development, and her interactions with penny would have been significant and meaningful, instead of just one nice scene that wasn’t really addressed again and becoming a waste of potential.
it would’ve also made penny coming back in the first place only to die later mean something to, because nora definitely never would’ve become the winter maiden without it.
overall, nora’s arc in vol. 8 really just felt like a vague attempt at writing something for nora without actually changing anything. it felt like busywork, something for her to do without much real thought behind it. i do not have much high hopes for them continuing her arc next volume, especially considering the arc they already gave her. i hope i am wrong, i hope that what they did in vol. 8 with nora has some actual consequence (either good or bad) but genuinely i feel like they only gave nora an arc because they realized she hadn’t done anything interesting in a while and threw something in there for her. like a lot of rwby, it suffers from the rushed writing. if they had more time to write and develop the script more, they might have realized how meaningless nora’s interactions with ren and penny were this volume because of how she basically ends in the same place she started, and might have done something abt it. i’m hopeful that since they aren’t putting vol. 9 out after only a single year like they did with the rest of the volumes, there will be better writing, but i’m not too hopeful considering all the other projects crwby is working on at the same time as vol. 9.

Back in volume 4, Ren said Jaune cleaned up well in his new outfit. Now in volume 7 Nora said she liked Ren’s new outfit, and then Jaune came and said he liked Nora’s so. The circle is complete.

I am hear to share my Winter/Marrow propaganda- hear me out, I swear! I was also not endeared to it when Winter kneeled on Marrow and everything, and Schnee/Faunus pairings in this fandom more often than not are usually seen as “take backs” at Jacques, which is a little gross.
But. But! I feel like this pairing has some juice to it. The Prince and the Pauper interactions. Former heiress who is now “lower” in social ranking meets Faunus who climbed up the ranks as an Ace-Op, both fighting to be recognised for their merit and not where they came from. Both fighting so hard to not show vulnerability in their own ways, but they can at least be vulnerable with each other.
It could have the good part of White Rose (no nonsense Schnee who brings levelheadedness interacts with naive yet talented goofball who helps her stop and smell the flowers sometimes) and the interesting part of Checkmate (Faunus/Human dynamics, possible Enemies-to-Lovers romance).
You could even subvert the Dating What Daddy Hates trope by showing how they care about each other. Them shrugging off comments about how Marrow is only trying to date a Schnee for “the perks” or to “try out a Human to see what its like” (he’s far too sincere to even think about it and she’s far too vigilant to let it happen) or how Winter is only doing this to spite her father (she wants 0% of Jacques’ opinion and Marrow is probably one of the easier Faunus partners to explain than say, Blake or Adam or Sienna).
There’s also how loyalty is a large theme in both their stories, how they both ties to their job AND their kingdom AND the peoplle they care for, and how much more it would hurt with them fighting in Volume 8 about where their loyalties lie; Winter being unable to leave the General even if she doesn’t fully agree with what he’s doing since he actually has a plan, and Marrow disagreeing with them because he’s devastated at the number of lives that would be lost with Ironwood’s plan, even if its all they have. How this would clash with how much they care about each other, how much Winter worries about Mantle too but sees the overall sacrifice as worth it, how much Marrow fears about his job but wants to stick to his morals which at telling him to protact as many people as possible. A bit like Renora but like, written with more detail and empathising with both sides.
Anyways, I rest my case and I hope I have made this ship seem at least a little less unbearable.
i do love fanon atlesian malamutes when it's described like this & veers away from the "getting back at jacques by tainting his human daughters with a filthy faunus" but there's a lot more similarities you described about them than i realized 🥺
