Panic surged through Sokka when he checked his phone and saw he had about twenty missed calls from you over the past ten minutes. Just as he was about to call back, your contact photo popped up on the screen accompanied by the duck quack ringtone you’d set for yourself ages ago.
“I’ll be back,” he mumbled to Zuko, who nodded absently while preparing a customer’s tea. He stepped out the back of the Jasmine Dragon and slid his thumb across the screen. “Hello?”
“SOKKA, THANK FUCK!” You sounded like you were crying on the other end. He frowned, pulling the phone away from his ear in response to your screech.
“What’s wrong? Are you hurt? Where are you?” he demanded over the ruckus of your wails. His hand dropped to his car keys in his pocket, ready to leave if you needed him.
“I’M AT HOME AND THERE’S A R-ROACH IN—“
Sokka groaned. “(Y/N), I’m at work. I cannot come kill a bug for you.”
Your blubbering paused. “B-But... I need help! And no one else will help me! Please help me!”
“As much as I want to help you I can’t right now, princess. I can swing by after we close in about an hour, though.”
You made a strangled sort of screaming sound and hung up. He brought his hand down, staring at his screen in surprise. The line was busy when he tried to call you back, so he pocketed his phone with a sigh and headed back inside.
Zuko was speaking on the store phone with someone when he got back to the front, making a face like he had just eaten something sour or smelled something foul. Sokka shot him a questioning look as he tied his apron back around his waist and Zuko beckoned him over.
“What’s up?” Sokka asked in a low voice.
“Just go,” Zuko huffed. “I can finish closing by myself and she said she won’t stop calling us until you help her.”
“Wh- give me that.” He took the landline receiver from Zuko. “Seriously, (Y/N)?”
“I’M FREAKING THE FUCK OUT, SOKKA!”
“It’s a bug!”
“IT’S FUCKING HUGE AND IT’S IN MY FUCKING ROOM, PLEASE GET OVER HERE! I NEED YOU!”
He made eye contact with Zuko and his friend just shook his head. “Fine, okay, you win. I’m on my way.”
She hiccuped. “You’re the best friend I could ever ask for, Sokka. I love you. Please hurry.”
“Yeah, yeah. Love you, too, princess,” he grumbled before hanging up. Zuko was watching him with raised eyebrows. “Oh, fuck off, dude.”
“I didn’t say anything.” He tried to hide his smirk by turning away to wipe down the counter.
“Don’t look so smug.” He smacked the back of his friend’s head after he threw his apron in the laundry bag.
“Hey!” Zuko punched his shoulder. “It’s not my fault you’re whipped for (Y/N) and too much of a pussy to make a move.”
“You’re fucking lucky I’m whipped and have to go kill a bug for my girl otherwise I’d kick your ass, Zuko.” He flipped him the middle finger as he headed out the door, keys in his other hand.
“Later, princess.” Zuko twiddled his fingers mockingly in goodbye. Sokka scoffed as he left, shaking his head and muttering under his breath. Yeah, he was whipped for you. He was wrapped securely and comfortably around your pinky finger. So what? It wasn’t like he had plans to do anything about it. He was perfectly happy being your friend — your best friend, in your own words. No way in hell would he risk fucking that up and losing you.
When he banged on your apartment door you simply yelled from inside that it was unlocked. It was hard to suppress a laugh at the scene that greeted him. You were curled up on your kitchen counter, hood of your sweatshirt drawn tight around your head so only your nose and eyes were visible and a can of bug spray in your trembling hand. Your tear-streaked face lit up when you saw him and it made his heart clench in his chest.
“Hey, princess.”
“Sokka!” You dropped the can and threw yourself at him. He caught you in his arms with a grunt and you wrapped your legs around his middle, clinging to his neck. His hands supported your back to keep you upright. “God, I’ve never been so happy to see you in my life. I could fucking kiss you right now.”
He had to recover quickly from almost choking on air in order to keep his composure. “Just doing my manly best friend duties.” He gulped when you slid down his body. Your feet hit the floor again but you still held onto him. “Alright, where’s the big bad bug?”
You glared up at him for his teasing. “My room. I was about to go take a shower when it fucking flew at my face! I don’t even know where it came from!”
“Stand by, princess,” he ruffled your hair and pulled off one of his sneakers to wield as a bludgeon, “I’ve got it all under control.” You rolled your eyes a bit when he puffed his chest out and flexed comically. You released him from your vice grip so he could stalk up to the closed door of your bedroom. Of course, you stayed planted firmly in the kitchen and watched from a distance.
“Be careful,” you warned, “it’s literally the biggest roach I’ve ever seen.”
“It may be big, but I’m bigger. And smarter.” He tapped his temple with his finger.
“I don’t know about that second part,” you giggled. He shot you a withering look.
“Do you want me to kill this thing or not?”
“Yes, sorry! You are so very strong and intelligent and handsome, Sokka. Much more strong and intelligent and handsome than the roach.”
“You know what? I’ll take that compliment.” He winked at you, sending your heart into your throat. You stuck your tongue out and made a face to hopefully hide how flustered you were.
“Stop flirting and kill the fucking bug!”
“You started it!”
“Sokka!” Laughing, he pushed open the door to your bedroom and disappeared inside. You watched the doorway with bated breath, listening to Sokka rummaging around to find the vermin.
There was an almighty thud, then a crash and a shriek along with thundering footsteps as your friend dashed out of the room with a massive roach flying behind him. You screamed too when you spotted the bug as it landed on your wall. Before you could react any further, Sokka had grabbed you and yanked you out the front door, slamming it shut behind you both.
“That’s no ordinary roach,” he panted, leaning against the door. He still held you close to his torso with an arm wrapped protectively around your waist. “Fucking military drone or something.”
“Did you think I was fucking joking?” Your stomach churned uneasily thinking about the insect walking all over your walls and prized possessions. A shudder ran down your spine and you buried your face into his chest, grabbing a fistful of the front of his shirt. “What am I supposed to do now? I can’t go back in there with that thing loose!”
“I don’t know.”
“You were supposed to kill it!”
“It charged me!”
“You big chicken!” Looking up, you flicked his forehead and giggled at his incredulous look. “I thought you loved me!”
His face felt like it was on fire. “I do!”
“Then why didn’t you kill it? You were supposed to protect me, Sokka!” Your hands settled on his chest and he hoped you couldn’t feel how fast his heart was beating. “So much for being smarter and stronger!”
“But you admit I’m more handsome still?” Your cheeks burned when his hand slid to your hip, using his thumb to rub circles into your hipbone through the fabric of your clothes.
“More handsome than the roach?” You couldn’t help but laugh at his goofy smile. “I guess you qualify for that.”
“Tough crowd,” he sighed. “I was going to bring you back to mine so you could get out of your roach-infested apartment, but if that’s how you really feel then I’ll leave you with the stronger, smarter organism.”
“The roach?” you squeaked indignantly. He chuckled at your wide eyes. “I’m sorry, I changed my mind. You are the smartest and strongest and handsomest again. Please let me crash at your place?”
“Wow, using me for my sweet crib? And here I was thinking you loved me for me!”
“Pretty please?” You clasped your hands under your chin, pouted, and gave him the best puppy dog eyes you could muster.
He groaned dramatically and rolled his eyes as if he were being greatly put out. “You know I can’t say no to that face. Let’s go, princess.” He disentangled himself from you and started to walk away only to realize you weren’t following. He turned back to you. “(Y/N)?”
You looked down at your socked feet. “I don’t have shoes. Or my keys.”
“I’m not going back in there.”
“Well, I’m not either.”
“Then it seems we’re at a stalemate.”
You pursed your lips thoughtfully. “Do you still have that spare key I gave you when I went out of town?”
“Good thinking, kid.” He shuffled around his key ring until he found yours, easily identifiable by the heart you’d painted onto it with your favorite nail polish. “Way to use your noodle.” He locked your front door and stood in front of you once again.
“Shoes,” you said simply, extending your leg to lift your foot in the air. “I’m not walking around like this. Knowing my luck I’ll step on a used needle and end up with some rare blood disease.” Sokka scratched the back of his neck as he considered this before a wicked grin split across his face. You did not like the looks of that. “Sokka...”
Without warning, he grabbed you around your middle and hoisted you onto his shoulder like a sack of flour. The inversion of your body made you squeal, scrambling to grab something to stabilize yourself. In your panic, you sunk your nails into the flesh of his ass.
“Jesus!” He gripped you tighter to stop you from slipping in his surprise. “I know I have an irresistibly fat ass but you gotta be careful back there, babe. That’s my moneymaker!”
If all your blood hadn’t been already rushing to your head you would’ve flushed. “That’s what you get for picking me up, asshole!” You paused. “What the fuck are you talking about, ‘your moneymaker?’”
“Well, I couldn’t have you stepping on a used needle and ending up with some rare blood disease, now could I?” You could practically hear his smirk as he carried you down to the front of your building.
“Do you derive joy from driving me up a wall?”
“Yes,” he answered without hesitation. You made an indignant noise and pinched his side. He yelped and smacked the back of your bare thighs in response.
“Did you just spank me?” You thrashed in protest, making him stumble a bit.
“No,” he grunted and then brought his hand down on your ass, eliciting a gasp from you. “Now I did.”
“Sokka!”
“That’s ‘Daddy’ to you, princess.” He tried to drop his voice an octave to sound stern but he couldn’t suppress his laughter. You were just glad he couldn’t see your face.
“I’m going to throttle you when you put me down,” you threatened.
“Kinky.”
“You know what? I’ll take my chances with the roach. Bring me back, you fucking deviant.”
He dropped you down to the ground and you leaned back against his car door, looking away from his face. “Aw, you’re hurting my feelings, babe. I seem to remember someone telling me—“
You clapped your hand over his mouth before he could continue. “That’s enough out of you, thanks.” You could feel his smile against your palm at the reference to a highly inappropriate conversation you’d had together when you were both extremely drunk. You recoiled when he licked your hand.
“Alright, alright; let’s go home. I’m exhausted.”
“Could’ve fooled me,” you muttered without any malice as he reached around you to open the passenger door. He simply gave you that same shit-eating grin and closed your door.
Sokka decided to spare your pride and carried you up to his apartment on his back instead of over his shoulder. His hands on your thighs, shifting your position every so often, made your heart race. You could still catch whiffs of the tea from the Jasmine Dragon off his clothes, mingling with the masculine smell of his deodorant. The combination put you at ease after the trauma of dealing with the roach and you sighed happily, setting your chin on his shoulder and pressing your cheek against his. The stubbly scruff along his jaw prickled at your skin but you couldn’t find it in you to care much.
You thought he’d drop you down onto his couch once you’d entered his apartment but instead he carried you into his bedroom and flopped backwards onto his mattress, knocking the wind out of your chest as he squished you under his body. Despite the squeezing weight on your lungs you were laughing uncontrollably, arms still thrown around his shoulders. Sokka wished he could have moments like this with you every night; that he could turn around and kiss you without ruining everything.
“Why so giggly, kid? Are you enjoying this?” he teased, leaning his head back onto your chest.
“Laughter is my panic response. You’re suffocating me, fatass,” you wheezed
“Nah, I think you like it.”
You hummed thoughtfully as the giggles subsided. “Maybe. You’re kinda like one of those weighted blankets.”
“Yeah?” He turned so he faced you, propping himself up on his forearms on either side of your head. “Do I relieve your anxiety?”
You quirked an eyebrow. “The opposite, actually.”
“You wound me, really. I am a calming, peaceful, meditative presence. I am a delight and a joy to be around.” He frowned when you threw your head back in incredulous laughter. You hooked your leg around his hips and flipped him onto his back, pinning him underneath you.
“Maybe you have your moments.” He stared wide-eyed up at your teasing smile and considered closing the space between your mouths. Before he could work up the nerve, you sat back on your haunches out of reach. “I need to shower.”
“Without me?” he pouted. You groaned and shoved his face into the mattress as you stood.
“Don’t wait up, baby.” He flushed at the nickname you used to tease him. He propped himself up on his elbows to see you down the hall.
“I’ll take the couch tonight,” he said. You stopped just outside the bathroom door.
“Sokka, we don’t have to do this every time. I think it’s okay if we just sleep in the same bed without arguing over who gets the couch at this point.”
“If you’re alright with it,” he sighed, dropping his head back down.
“Why wouldn’t I be? It’s you.” You gave him a quick smile before disappearing into the bathroom.
You always secretly loved staying over with Sokka. The lather of his soap running down your body into the drain made you feel wrapped in his presence — a great comfort despite your teasing that suggested otherwise. His meticulous organizing even in the shower always made you laugh a little to yourself. His products were neatly organized in the order he used them, likely something he started doing when you’d dragged him to a beauty store after finding out he used 3-in-1 “for efficiency.” Now, to your immense pride and satisfaction, he had a full skincare and haircare routine.
Upon exiting the shower wrapped in a towel, you saw Sokka snoring lightly on his bed next to a pile of clothes he’d left out for you. You pulled on his shirt and quickly wriggled under the covers, propping yourself up on your elbow. You poked your finger into his cheek and he grunted, swatting at you.
“Leave me alone, woman,” he murmured.
“You need to shower.” He cracked an eye open to glare at you.
“You’re awfully demanding for a guest in my bed.”
“Well, you worked today and you stink.”
“That’s just my natural man musk. Pheromones and stuff. Nothing to be done about it.”
“Are you an ant?”
“Only if you’ll be my queen ant.” He sent you a cocky smirk and you simply shook your head.
“You’re fucking weird, dude.” He laughed and wrapped an arm around you, pulling you directly into his armpit as you squealed. Finally you freed yourself and rolled onto your side away from him with a huff. Sokka slid behind you and rested his head on your shoulder, sliding his arm around your waist.
“You know you love me, princess.”
“Whatever,” you grumbled. He chuckled and the sound reverberated against your back, his warm breath on your cheek making goosebumps rise on your skin. His thumb slid absently back and forth across your stomach and the soft touch lulled your heavy eyelids closed.
“Don’t go to bed mad, babe. At least give me my goodnight kiss.”
Enough. It’s now or never.
Before you could start second-guessing yourself, you rolled onto your back underneath him and surged upwards to press your lips to his in an insistent kiss. It lasted only a few moments before you pulled away because he remained frozen against you. His clear blue eyes were wide as he stared down at you and you could feel the heat rising to your cheeks and the tears threatening to spill as you realized what you’d done.
“You shouldn’t flirt if you don’t mean it, Sokka. It gives people the wrong idea,” you whispered, the corners of your mouth pulling into a frown. His gaze darted from your eyes down to your lips and back again.
“Who says I don’t mean it?” And then he was finally, finally kissing you before you could tell him off. You snaked your arm around his shoulders and pulled him down on top of you, desperate to be closer, to feel his body on your own to reassure yourself that yes, this was happening and it was real. His hand trailed up to cup your face, skimming his thumb gently along your cheekbone. You both broke away to gasp for air. Sokka looked down at your flushed cheeks and bright eyes and lips that were just beginning to swell and he thought you were the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen.
“Oh, don’t look so pleased with yourself,” you laughed, swiping your thumb over his satisfied smile on your way to pull the tie from his ponytail. The ends of his loose hair tickled your face as he kissed you again, this time much more gentle.
“And why shouldn’t I be?” Another kiss. “I’m kissing the girl I’ve been in love with for years.” Your eyes widened and you shoved him back onto the bed.
“Years?” you squeaked. “We could’ve been doing this for years?”
“I didn’t know you had feelings for me!”
“Of course I had feelings for you, are you joking?”
“Then why didn’t you do anything before now? I flirt with you constantly!”
“Because I thought you were joking!”
“Well, that’s on you, then. Now c’mere, princess,” he reached out and hugged you close to his body again, “we have a lot of time to make up for.”
“God, you’re such a cornball.” You giggled at the teasing kisses he peppered all over your face. When he finally caught your lips you hummed happily against his mouth. He tasted sweeter than the most tooth-rotting candy and gave you the same sugar high.
“Yeah, but you love it.”
“I do.” You snuggled down under the blanket and rested your head on his chest. “I love you, Sokka.”
He ruffled your hair affectionately. “I love you too, princess.”
“You still need to shower, though.”
“Ugh.”

you poured the chips onto the plate, putting all of the dips in the middle. you set it on the island table with the rest of snacks you and the girls had picked up for the christmas party. you were excited, but nervous for this year’s party. ever since you girls went to college, which was three years ago - well, toph just started this year - , you had made it a friend tradition to have holiday parties. you had friend-giving, friend-mas, friend year’s and galentine’s day.
you and the girls always had aang and sokka there. you usually were the one with no date. toph had a few guys come over sometime, but they never really stuck. since this was your first time having a boy over, one that was really hot, really smart, and seemed really into you, you were beyond nervous. you were terrified. sure, you had hung out with him before, but not when you were gonna drink a few glasses of champagne. so, you decided to just be light on the drinks tonight. otherwise, you would probably end up laying on zuko’s lap, either making out with him or telling embarrassing childhood stories.
“this looks great, guys! ooh, salsa,” sokka said, his mouth watering.
“yeah, i can’t wait to eat the nachos,” toph said.
both of their hands went to pick up a chip, but you slapped their hands away.
“no one eats until zuko, katara, and aang are here,” you said.
sokka frowned, “you suck. suki, tell y/n i can have one chip.”
suki chuckled, “no, y/n’s right.”
“can you let me have a chip? i’m your best friend! and i’m blind,” toph begged with a sweet smile.
suki rolled her eyes, “nice try.”
“i haven’t eaten since this morning!” toph exclaimed.
“get another snack then. these are for our guests,” you said.
toph scoffed, “yeah you mean for your boyfriend zuko.”
sokka smirked, “yeah, you wanna make sure everything is perfect for him.”
“no, i don’t! it’s just polite to wait,” you glared at them.
sokka smirked, “suuuuure, y/n. keep telling yourself that.”
you frowned, “i literally hate you.”
“love you, too! where are katara and aang, anyways?” sokka asked.
“they’re picking up some gingerbread house kits for us to make,” toph said.
“yeah, and that takes 45 minutes? i’m sure that’s what they’re doing,” sokka rolled his eyes.
“i’ll text katara and see if they’re coming back soon,” you said.
“good. text zuko and ask when he’s coming. make sure to tell him if he doesn't come in the next 15 minutes, i will start eating the counter,” sokka said.
you rolled your eyes. “what a baby.”
you went into the living room, pulling out your phone. you texted katara, hoping for a quick response. you then texted zuko, suddenly getting anxious again.
Tumblr media
you set your phone down next to you. suki, toph, and sokka came over to sit down.
“so, when are they coming?” sokka asked.
“uh, zuko said 10 minutes and katara hasn’t responded yet,” you answered.
“ugh! next time, one of you go with katara for shopping,” sokka said.
“yeah, cause we are faster than them,” suki chuckled.
the front door opened and there revealed katara and aang. they had grocery bags in each hands.
“hey, guys!” katara smiled.
“god, finally! what took you guys so long?” sokka asked.
“we couldn’t find the special sprinkles you like, sokka,” aang said.
“oh,” sokka said.
“and we had to get appa,” aang said. appa flew out from behind aang, landing on your lap.
you squealed, “hi, appa!” you ruffled his hair softly, earning a lick on the nose from him.
“appa, come here boy!” sokka smiled at him. appa just looked at sokka, turning back to you.
“appa, come here!” toph said, patting her lap. appa walked across your lap to toph, licking her cheek.
“haha! that sucks,” you laughed at sokka’s frown.
“sokka, you can redeem yourself by helping me with these groceries,” katara said.
sokka sighed and got up from the couch, taking a few bags out of their hands and going over to the kitchen. as they set up the treats, you looked at the door, your leg bouncing up and down as you waited for a knock from zuko.
“you okay, y/n? i can feel your leg bouncing,” toph said.
“yeah, what’s wrong?” suki asked.
you kept your eyes on the door. “i’m fine,” you shrugged.
suki put her hand on your knee, stopping it. “take a deep breath, okay? zuko was so happy to receive an invitation. and isn’t he gonna wear a matching ugly sweater with you for the ugly sweater contest? it’ll be perfect.”
you sighed. “yeah, but what if i spill guac on him. or worse, i trip and fall over on him.” you shivered as you thought of the cringe that would come from those moments.
“if you fall, i will make sure to take a picture,” katara said as she walked into the living room.
you rolled your eyes. “really supportive, kat.”
katara smiled and sat down next to you. “you’ll be fine. like suki said, zuko wants to be here and plus, he really likes you. go and drink some water, take a deep breath, and go be the badass, hot girl i know.”
“yeah, and if he hurts you tonight, i’ll make sure to crush his bones,” toph smiled maliciously, cracking her knuckles.
you smiled at your best friends. “thanks guys, you guys are the best.”
“we know,” toph smiled.
you laughed at her comment, but fell silent once you heard a knock on the door.
oh, god. that’s him. that’s him that’s him
“are you gonna get that, or do i have to?” sokka asked, walking towards the door.
you jumped up off the couch, pushing sokka away. “i got it.”
“alright,” sokka said.
you took a deep breath, combing your fingers through your hair, and pulled your sweater down. you put your hand on the door, slowly opening it.
zuko appeared in front of you, a big grin appearing on your face.
“hey, zuko!” you said excitedly.
“hi, y/n,” he smiled at you.
“come in,” you said, stepping out of his way.
“thanks,” zuko said and stepped in. he took his shoes off and coat, revealing his matching christmas sweater.
you gasped, your eyes lighting up. “you actually wore it!”
“well yeah, it’d be lame not to,” zuko chuckled.
“true. we so have the best sweaters on,” you smiled.
appa flew over to zuko, licking zuko’s cheek while still in the air.
“hey, buddy,” zuko smiled. “i would pet you, but i have my hands full,” he said, gesturing to the gift bags he had.
“oh, let me take those for you,” you said. zuko handed the presents to you, you walking over to the christmas tree.
“thank you,” zuko said, walking over with appa cuddling in his arms.
“no problem,” you smiled.
“hey, man!” sokka exclaimed as he walked into the room.
“hey, sokka!” zuko smiled, giving sokka a hug.
“hey, zuko. long time, no see,” aang smiled.
“yeah, sorry, holiday times at the JD get busy,” zuko chuckled. “we can hang over break.”
“awesome! gram-gram bought katara and i a vr headset, we can all play on it when you come over!” sokka said.
“oh, cool! azula’s friend, ty lee, has one, too. i played on it a little,” zuko said.
“is it fun?” you asked.
“very. maybe you can come over to my place sometime and i’ll have ty lee bring it over,” zuko smiled.
“yeah, i’d like that,” you grinned.
you and zuko smiled at each other for what seemed like forever before toph coughed.
“i can feel the sexual tension between you two, please stop. can we eat now?” she asked.
you and zuko looked away from each other, pink tainted both of your cheeks.
“yeah, we can eat now,” you said.
“alright! let’s get this party on!” sokka exclaimed, running to the kitchen.
you chuckled, walking over to the kitchen.
“zuko, you want champagne or beer?” you asked.
“beer is fine, thank you,” zuko smiled.
you got out a bottle from the cooler, handing it to him. “you’re welcome. so, what’d you get everyone?”
“well, i got sokka a new wallet. i bought aang a new messenger bag, he mentioned he needed one since his old one is practically falling apart.” “yeah, he's had that thing since high school,” you chuckled.
“exactly. anyways, so i got suki a $50 gift card to sephora, katara a hoodie that says ‘riding the waves’. i got appa a little ball you can put hay in so he can exercise and eat. i got toph some airpods, and your present is a surprise,” zuko smiled.
“wow, you are an awesome gift giver. and i am very excited about my gift. i can’t wait to open the ones every gave me, not to be greedy or anything. i heard sokka got me my own personal smoothie maker,” you smiled.
“don’t you already have a nutri bullet?” zuko asked, pointing to the machine that was on the counter.
“yes, but apparently this one can make milkshakes, too. definitely gonna sell the nutri bullet on craigslist,” you smiled.
“wow, sounds cool. i wish i had one of those,” zuko said.
you scoffed, “you literally live above a tea shop, you don’t need a blender.”
“hm, true. it’s great being me,” zuko joked. “i bet it is,” you giggled.
“guys! wanna do the ginger bread house making contest now?” katara asked.
“yeah!” you nodded, going over to the kitchen table. you and zuko sat down across from each other, grabbing one of the kits.
“alright, we have an hour do to this. the judges are toph and appa. toph will judge taste, appa will judge construction and decor,” suki smiled.
“what? you trust a sky bison?” sokka asked.
appa grunted, slapping sokka with his tail. you laughed, “you deserved that.”
sokka rolled his eyes. “yeah, whatever.”
suki sat down next to sokka, pecking his cheek. you looked at zuko, wishing you could do that to him. zuko gave you a small smile, wishing the same thing.
toph held up the timer. “alright, ready… set.. go!”
you tore the box open, setting out the walls, roof, and decorations. you worked quickly, opening all your materials. you started to glue the walls to the bottom with icing. you looked up for a second to see zuko doing the same thing.
“ready to go down?” he asked, noticing your stare.
“nah, i’m ready to win,” you smiled.
zuko mirrored your grin, going back to focusing on his house.
you quickly built the rest of the walls, everything surprisingly staying up.
“aw, damn it!” katara exclaimed. you looked over to see two of her walls falling down.
“it’s okay, baby, you can do it,” aang said.
katara groaned in frustration, “i held them together for 5 minutes! how are you and y/n’s walls staying on?”
“it’s called having ‘the magic touch’,” you snickered.
katara frowned, “shut up.”
“hey, mine is falling, too,” zuko said. you looked over to his, seeing one of the walls tipping over.
“well, not mine! i’m awesome!” sokka exclaimed. “and suki is, too!”
you looked over to suki, who already had her roof on.
“up top, babe!” sokka said, holding his hand up. suki high-fived him, “yep. we are legendary.” “nope,” you said, glueing on your roof.
“face it, y/n, you’re gonna lose. suki and i are gonna win,” sokka said.
“hey! no teaming!” katara exclaimed.
“oh, you’re teaming with aang. you can’t talk,” you remarked.
“you can team with zuko,” aang suggested.
you looked at zuko, seeing him already looking at you. he shrugged at you, “you want to?”
“yes,” you smiled.
“how do you all team if you all have your own houses?” toph asked.
“well, we can add our points up,” suki said.
“ah, okay. well, grading will be extra hard, then,” toph smiled.
“fair,” aang said.
“no, not fair!” sokka exclaimed.  “yes, fair,” you said. “therefore, you will lose, and zuko and i will win.”
“nope, aang and i will win,” katara stated matter-of-factly.
“you sure, kat?” sokka smirked, looking at her gumdrops who were falling off of the front of the house.
katra glared, “you don’t even have any decorations on yet!”
sokka scowled, “yeah, well, suki does! and she’ll help us win all the points.”
“sokka! get to work,” suki ordered.
“yes, ma’am,” sokka said and started decorating his roof.
you turned to your own house again, resuming decorating the front of the house.
“yours looks really good,” zuko said.
you looked up and smiled. “thank you. yours do, too. i like the flowers on the side.”
“thanks. garden are very important for a nice house,” he said.
you chuckled, “i agree.”
“15 more minutes left!” toph exclaimed.
“what? how do you know that?” sokka asked.
“i set a 45 minute timer so i would know, genius,” toph rolled her eyes.
“right, right,” sokka said, turning to back to his house.
“ten more!” toph said.
“damn,” you muttered.
“what?” zuko asked.
“i haven’t finished my snowman,” you frowned and turned your house over so he could see the snow man you made out of marshmallows.
“i think he looks perfect,” zuko smiled.
you giggled, “thank you. i think we’re gonna win this.”
“me, too,” zuko smiled.
“3…2…1, stop!” toph shouted. you put your hands in your lap, waiting for the judging to begin.
“alright, first up is aang and katara. aka kataang. aang, give me a piece of your room, a wall, and a piece with candy. katara, do the same. appa, go ahead and judge,” toph instructed.
appa flew around the houses, looking at every inch, nook, and cranny.
“he can’t even talk! this isn’t fair!” sokka exclaimed.
“do not disrespect the sky bison,” you glared at him.
sokka scoffed, “he knows it’s true.”
appa grunted at sokka before going back to look at katara’s house.
“hm, a good amount of sweetness. nice use of the gummy worms. very good, aang,” toph said.
“thank you,” aang smiled widely.
toph then judged katara, going to appa to talk over the points.
“alright. we give you guys a 8.5 out of 10,” toph said.
“alright, that’s good!” katara high-fived aang.
“good job, babe,” aang smiled and leaned over to kiss her cheek.
“next up are suki and sokka,” toph said.
suki and sokka gave toph pieces of their houses, appa flying around to observe. after 10 minutes after judging, toph gave them the score.
“8 out of 10,” toph said.
“what! that’s like a low b!” sokka eclaimed.
“hey, it's higher than a c,” suki said, putting a hand over his.
sokka pouted, “fine. let’s see how team (you and zuko’s ship name) did.”
you cut pieces of your gingerbread and handed it to toph. zuko did the same. you bit your lip in anticipation. you knew it was a silly game, but the winner - or winners in this case - got a free dinner to the middle ring or a 2 free drinks at the JD. you wanted the JD coupon so bad. you loved the tea, but also, it gave you an excuse to see zuko randomly.
“hm, alright. i give you two 9 out of 10. you guys are the winners!” toph smiled.
you jumped up in excitement, going over to zuko and pulling him in a tight hug. zuko wrapped his arms around you, giving you the feeling of warmth and safety.
you pulled away, a bright smile on your face.
“which do you choose. free dinner at the middle ring, or two free drinks at the JD. one of you can get each since there’s enough for both of you,” toph said, holding out the coupons.
“i want the coupon to JD!” you said, but looked to zuko quickly. “unless you do.”
“you can take it,” zuko smiled.
“yay!” you squealed and plucked the ticket out of toph’s hand.
“alright, ugly sweater contest! the prize is money,” sokka grinned.
“alright, appa will be the judge again!” suki exclaimed, walking over and putting a $20 bill in appa’s mouth.
“okay, since zuko and y/n are wearing the same sweater, they can each have $10,” katara said.
“alright, fair,” you nodded.
“stand in a line,” aang instructed. you went in-between zuko and toph. you all watched in excitement, waiting for appa to hand one of you the bill.
after five minutes, appa went to toph.
“alright! you all suck!” toph pumped her fist up in the air.
“you have to be kidding me,” sokka said, face palming.
you chuckled, turning to zuko. “maybe next year.”
“yep. i don’t know why we didn’t win. all these sparkles and diamonds give me a headache,” zuko said, looking at his sweatshirt.
“same. you can change if you want,” you said.
“nah, i’m good. i wanna be matching,” zuko smiled.
you chuckled, “yay! i was hoping you said that.”
zuko’s smile widened at your excitement. you felt giddy inside and found yourself staring at his lips. you felt a sudden urge to lean up and kiss him, and go back into your room and make out. zuko must’ve noticed your stare, cause he licked his lips seductively. your face warmed up and you looked away quickly, coughing awkwardly and going to pour yourself another glass of champagne.
zuko smiled at your retreating figure, looking to your other friends.
“so, what's next on the agenda?” he asked.
“present opening!” aang exclaimed, running over to the tree.
you walked over to the living room, sitting down on the bean bag. zuko sat across from you.
“alright, i wanna go first!” aang exclaimed.
“alright. here’s mine,” katara said, picking up a big present and handing it to him.
aang opened it and pulled out new sneakers. “oh, this is awesome! thank you, babe. i love you.”
katara smiled. “you’re welcome. i got them custom-made so they’re your favourite colors and on the logo, it has appa and my name on it.”
“my two favourite things in the world. i love it,” aang smiled, leaning over to give katara a kiss.
suki then handed her his gift. he then opened one from sokka, toph, and zuko, then you. you ended up getting him a new gaming  headset that has boosted sound system.
“thanks, guys. you are all awesome!” aang grinned.
“you're welcome, buddy,” sokka smiled. “my turn!”
“alright, here’s mine,” suki said, handing him a banana-shaped present.
sokka ripped it open, holding it up in all its glory, it was a dark blue boomerang that had a small heart on one end with suki’s name in it.
“this. is. AMAZING! oh, i love you! we are so doing it tonight!” sokka exclaimed, kissing suki.
you all groaned, telling sokka to shut up.
sokka opened everyone else’s present. you had got him a skateboard.
“thank you, guys. especially suki,” sokka smiled at his girlfriend.  “you’re welcome, baby,” suki smiled, planting a kiss on his cheek.
“my turn!” katara exclaimed.
she opened her present from aang first, which was new makeup brushes, which  apparently katara need a lot. suki got katara a humidifier, toph got her a new smoothie/coffee cup, sokka got her a $50 gift card to jc penny, zuko gave katara the sweatshirt, and you got her a polaroid camera.
“i love all these! thank you,” katara smiled at each of you.
“you're welcome,” you all spoke.
suki went next. sokka had gifted her a 365 day jar, katara gave her a new makeup pallet, toph gifted suki a new curling iron, aang gave her a new fluffy pillow, zuko gave her the gift card, and you had bought suki a new silk robe.
“oh, these are sick! definitely gonna have fun with these,” suki held up the jar and the robe.
“you’re welcome,” katara smiled. “alright, toph, it’s your turn.”
“alright, tell me what is it after i open it,” toph said. katara handed her a gift from her.
katara had given toph a new pair of hiking shoes, suki had given her new guitar picks and a new guitar strap, sokka had given her a new gaming chair, which obviously wasn't there, but he said he it would be delivered to the apartment tomorrow. aang gave her a 5 candle set, zuko had given her airpods, and you had given her a turtle duck stuffed animal where she could warm up in case of cramps or stress.
“these are awesome. thanks guys,” toph smiled.
“you’re welcome! alright, zuko’s turn!” suki exclaimed, handing him a gift.
“thanks,” zuko smiled.
suki had gifted him a sweatshirt with his favorite basketball team, katara had bought him a new phone case, aang gave him a new gaming headset, sokka had given him a new watch, and toph gave him new sneakers.
you nervously gave him your gift, which was pretty huge. zuko smiled while opening it, his eyes lighting up once he saw it.
“woah, this is awesome!” he exclaimed.
you had gotten him a new skateboard that had his name written on flames.
“i know you mentioned you hadn’t had a skateboard since you were in high school and you wanted to get back into it,” you said bashfully.
“thank you, i love it,” zuko smiled.
“you’re welcome,” you smiled. “alright, well, my turn!”
“open mine first!” katara exclaimed, handing you her gift.
you took it from her, opening it gently. she had gotten you a google home.
“oh, katara, do you know how much i adore you?” you said.
“i know, don’t worry,” katara giggled.
you had opened the next gift, which as from suki. she had gifted you crocs that said ‘super swag’ on each one.
“oh, you are feeding my narcism,” you chuckled.
“you deserve it,” suki smiled.
you then opened aang’s gift. he had gotten you a new hoodie from your favorite show. “this is like $70! thank you!”
“you’re welcome,” aang smiled.
you opened your gift from toph, which was a poster with all of the girls and you.
“how did you get this one made?” you asked, staring at it in astonishment.
“i know people,” toph grinned.
you chuckled, “thank you.”
“you’re welcome,” toph said.
sokka handed you his gift, which was the blender
“yes!” you squealed.
“i knew you would like it. no need to tell me, i already know i’m the best gift giver,” sokka smirked.
“hm, i can’t say that until i open zuko’s gift,” you said.
zuko had handed you his gift. “thank you,” you said.
“you’re welcome,” zuko said.
“i’m goanna go and order pizza,” katara said.
“yeah, me too!” sokka exclaimed, getting up.
you furrowed your brows. “what?”
“yeah, i need to make sure katara orders the right pizza,” toph said.
“i need to pee,” aang said. “i have to take appa out,” suki said.
they all got up and left the room, leaving you speechless.
“what just happened?” you asked, turning to zuko.
zuko was blushing hard, which made you even more confused.
“i don’t know. go ahead and open your gift,” he said.
“alright,” you said. you opened the gift, which was a small, black box. you took the top off, your eyes widening and your mouth agape. zuko had gotten you a silver charm bracelet. the charms were an otter-penguin, the first initial of your name, your zodiac sign with your zodiac gemstone, and a small circle.
“this is so beautiful, thank you,” you smiled.
“you're welcome. read the text on the small circle,” he said.
you looked at it, reading the words out loud. “will you… go on… a date… with me?”
you paused for a moment, lowering the bracelet and looking at zuko.
“so, what’s your answer?” zuko asked, nervously playing with his fingers.
“yes,” you nodded and smiled.
zuko’s worried expression went away immediately, and was replaced with glowing, big grin. “really?”
“yes!” laughed, leaning over and giving him a hug.
“YES!” you heard everyone shout from kitchen. they all came back into the room.
“you guys are gonna make an awesome couple!” sokka exclaimed.
you pulled away, blushing. “shut up.”
“alright, wanna watch ‘home alone’, now?” suki asked.
“yeah,” you nodded.
“zuko and y/n, you can sit on the love seat,” sokka smiled, wiggling his eye brows.
you rolled your eyes, “so immature.”
“i don’t mind,” zuko smiled and shrugged.
you smiled up at him, walking over to the couch with him. you sat down right next to him, putting your head on his shoulder with no hesitation. zuko wrapped his arm around you and rested his hand on your thigh. your heart pounded against your chest, and warmth shot down from your stomach to between your thighs.
“do you mind my hand being here?” zuko asked.
you took a deep, shaky breath. “nope.”
zuko moved his hand, “you sure?”
you grabbed his hand and shook your head. “i’m sure.”
zuko smirked a little, putting his hand back. you sighed contently and leaned into him more, enjoying the warmth he provided.
aang turned on the movie and you all watched it in silence. during the movie, you had moved over to zuko’s lap. you were stretching and ended up on him. you were going to move, but zuko grabbed your waist gently, setting you back down. the gesture had you grinning from ear-to-ear, snuggling into him.
the movie ended, which signalled the end of the party. everyone but zuko was staying, which made you sad, but you knew you weren’t ready for him to stay the night with you in your room. not just yet.
so, you just walked him up to the front door.
“thank you for the skateboard,” zuko smiled.
“you’re welcome. thank you for the charm bracelet. when is the date, again?” you asked.
“ah, right, sorry,” zuko chuckled. “are you free tomorrow?”
“i am,” you smiled, clasping your hands in excitement.
“great! i’ll take you out then. make sure to dress warmly,” he said.
“will do. see you tomorrow, zu,” you smiled.
“see you,” he smiled and went on his way.
you closed the door, looking down at your charm bracelet dreamily. you were falling hard for this boy.

From Chin To Yon Rah (Part 37)
“One day we’ll take a vacation.” Hajime muses one afternoon.
“Not today.” Azula grumbles. She is a bit more than cranky, her feet are killing her, her back is sore, and the baby won’t stop squirming. Her stomach feels so heavy and, spirits, the baby is crushing her lungs. “Definitely not today.” She winces.
But this doesn’t deter Hajime from his daydreams. “We can go explore the entire world!”
“I can’t even explore our backyard right now.” She complains.
“We can go to the desert and find Wan Shi Tong’s Library. Or explore the Cave of the Two Lovers.”
“Or the living room…”
“Maybe we can cross the Serpent's Pass!”
“I also can’t even cross the hallway”
Hajime laughs out loud, “what about the tundras of the Water Tribes or maybe we can catch an airship to the Air Temples. Visit the Fire Nation palace and Ember Island.”
“I have been to Ember Island many times already.” And the palace has no appeal whatsoever. “Can you travel into the kitchen and start cooking dinner? I’m hungry.” And tired and suffering.
He kisses her cheek. “What are you in the mood for?”
At the moment she is in the mood for anything that will satiate the baby. At the moment that thing might be noodles. Yes, she decides, she would like noodles. She voices as much, “with some pepper and vegetable slices.”
“What kind of vegetables?”
“Surprise me.”
He resumes his enthusiastic plans for world travel as soon as the steaming bowl is placed in her eager hands. Agni, the scent is tantalizing. It is much easier to fantasize about travel when she is feeling more cozy.
“We’ll go everywhere.” He declares again. “Atsu has always wanted to see Agna Qel'a and its hidden oasis.”
She brings the spoon to her mouth and quirks a brow. “How are we going to go there if it’s hidden?” She asks.
“We’ll find it just like Fire Lord Zuko did.”
“Well if he can find it, anyone can.” She mutters.
Hajime chuckles. “So you’re up for it then?”
“I suppose, yes. But first things first…”
“I know.” He smiles. “Sometimes it’s just nice to think a little further into the future.”
She supposes that it is now that the future doesn’t look quite so abysmal. It actually looks rather kind. Adventure does sound quite lovely. But for now she is content to finish her noodles and have a nap.
She puts her bowl aside, lays herself across Hajime’s lap, and reaches up to touch his cheek. His skin is so smooth and soft and warm. She strokes her thumb over his lower lip. She thinks that it would be rather quaint and comforting to be buried under layers of blankets with he, their newborn, and Atsu watching the snow fall. She lowers her hand resting it atop her belly and closes her eyes. She imagines that it would be something like this but with the crackling of a fire for heat and the howl of frosty wind for ambiance.
That night she learns that it is safe to have hopes and expectations for the future.
.oOo.
“You know what I think you need?” Sokka slings his arm over her shoulder.
She rubs her tired eyes, “what do I need, Sokka?”
“Well first of all…” He pulls her into one of the tightest hugs that she has had in a while. “Second of all--another change of scenery! Last time you went to the Earth Kingdom. Maybe I can show you the Water Tribes or we can be adventurous and I can have Aang take us on a tour of the Air Temples!”
Azula considers, a change of scenary might be good for her. It was extremely therapeutic to the be in the Earth Kingdom before that was stolen away from her.
“What about Caihong?”
“She can come with us! Or if you don’t want to worry about her getting hurt or lost your mom can watch her. I think that Cai likes your mom.”
Azula taps her chin, “my mother is very fond of Caihong.” And she supposes that, after their sappy little heart to heart she can let her watch the child in good conscience.
“I’d love for Katara to meet the new you.” Sokka muses more to himself.
“Sokka, you’re pushing it.” She doubts that Katara will take her re-appearance very well, changed or not. And she has changed, she tells herself. She is not cruel, she reminds herself. She is just a woman who will do what needs to be done, be it ugly and sinister or sweet and wonderful.
And she thinks that it is time for something sweet and wonderful. “Decide where we’re going and let me know so I can pack accordingly.”
Sokka grins, “I can’t wait! You have to meet my dad! That’s part of this whole relationship thing. I already met your mom and your dad is an asshole so we don’t have to worry about his approval…”
She is torn between chuckling and flinching. Introducing him to her mother is fine and well, he is a charming and clever man. But to be the subject of an introduction? She isn’t sure that she likes the sound of that.
But then, these humble and terrifying moments were exactly what had given the Earth Kingdom its allure.
She thinks that distance and brand new places might bring clarity, a new perspective. At the very least, she won’t be able to think too much about her problems if she is freezing her ass off and occupied by coming up with creative ways to stay warm.
“Raava’s tendrils, this is exciting!” He exclaims. “I can show you the dancing curtains and teach you how to build snow lookout towers!”
“I can see dancing curtains here.” She gestures to curtains billowing in the breeze.
He shakes his head, “no, no! In the poles we have these colorful lights and they dance around like curtains.”
“I think that I’ve read about those.”
“Well soon you’ll get to see them! It’ll be great!”
If she and Katara don’t tear each other to bits before she gets the chance. She doesn’t vocalize her concerns. Instead she asks, “do you think that your father will like me?” It would be nice to have the approval of at least one father.
Sokka ruffles her hair, “he’ll love you! Especially if you tell him all about your battle strategies, he loves that kind of thing.”
She wonders if he would be as fond of it knowing that her battle strategies had a hand in landing him in the Boiling Rock. “If you say so…” she doesn’t mean to sound so skeptical but lately things haven’t been so well. Lately it isn’t safe to dream.
“I promise, you’ll do fine. We can even do some sightseeing before you reintroduce yourself.”
Perhaps she is about to pick at scabs that haven’t had the chance to heal, perhaps she enjoys tormenting her own mind. She thinks that she must, “do you want to travel the world, Sokka?”
He shrugs. “Eh...not particularly. I went everywhere with Aang, I’d actually kind of like to just stay in one place for a while. Mostly I just want to go home.”
Azula nods. She feels strangely relieved to hear as much. Strangely relieved yet somehow disappointed. “But would you do it again?”
“Why? Do you want to?”
She is quite for a moment. “I think so, maybe.” She thinks that this is what Hajime would have wanted her to do. To see the physical world for him so that she has stories to tell when she finds him in the Spirit World.

Spirits
Click here to read the entire fic on AO3
The closer her wedding day got, everything got harder and harder. The nobility in Caldera weren’t happy, but kept to themselves because the Earth Empire also didn’t want the marriage to happen. And Arnook ramped up his sullenness to the point that they no longer took their weekly meal together.
For all of that talk about destiny, it seemed to Katara like the whole world was against her marriage to Zuko.
With a headache building, Katara headed to the oasis. True to her word, she had started visiting Yue more often, finding the trips less uncomfortable. The conversations were a lot better too.
Katara took her place next to the pond and focused her breathing on Tui and La. As Tui rose in her vision, she inhaled. When La rose, she exhaled. After a time, she closed her eyes.
Projecting her spirit felt similar to the falling sensation she’d get when laying in bed. She moved forward without moving, and when Katara opened her eyes, she was at the edge of the pond. Standing, she looked back at her body. That was always disconcerting.
Facing the pond again, Katara dove between the spirits. Without having to breathe, Katara swam down for longer than her physical lungs could manage. At some point, the swim down flipped to a swim up and Katara broke the surface of another pond.
It was a full moon, and usually Yue was waiting for her here.
But no Yue.
Pulling herself up, Katara looked around. The landscape of the spirit world fascinated her and some of the fauna approached her in curiosity. Being connected to La, Katara radiated with a dark light that was only possible in this realm. Some spirits kept their distance, whispering the phrase “vattu,” but neither Yue nor Thuy could tell her what that meant.
Regardless, she wasn’t threatened, wearing the scales of La, so Katara started to walk about. A breeze she couldn’t feel ruffled the long purple grass, making the sloping hills around her undulate.
In the distance, Katara saw the tiny figures of bipeds and she squinted. Iroh and Rohan explained to her that Airbenders were able to access the Spirit World easily, and a handful of others that could master their spiritual balance. Katara had yet to run into other humans in all of her visits, but Yue assured her that there were plenty around.
“Looking for me?” Yue asked, directly behind Katara. She laughed as Katara jumped, whirling around.
“I was beginning to think I was being stood up.” Katara remarked, making Yue smile.
“I had something take longer than I thought.” She said and Katara narrowed her eyes.
“So what were you looking at?” Yue asked, floating past her.
“Are those humans?” Katara asked, turning back and pointing to a far hill. The figures were gone.
“Hmm, always possible.” Yue said, rolling in the air like a seal. Becoming a fully-fledged spirit had relaxed her apparently. She was like this a lot of the time; ethereal and fluid.
“You now, I never asked, but what does being the moon spirit entail?” Katara questioned, continuing her aimless walk.
“Does it need to be something?” Yue questioned. “Is there something about being the ocean spirit?”
Katara scoffed, casting Yue an incredulous look.
“Of course. Blood, boats, and babies.” She retorted and Yue rolled her eyes.
“You’re really fond of your quips.”
“I’m serious. You know our people, we live and die by the ocean. Salt water runs in humanity’s veins, and amniotic fluid is salty. But boats sink, humans drown, and sea water is poisonous. Life and death exists in the ocean.” Katara explained, gesturing with her hands as she spoke.
“So what is the moonlight?” Yue pondered, tapping her lips with one slim finger.
“Yearning.” Katara murmured and Yue paused. Her hair and robes continued on for a moment, flowing in the watery air.
“Oh?”
Katara laughed and looked around.
“I don’t think I could ever get tired of being here.” She said instead.
Yue nodded and rolled over, flipping to look in the same direction.
“We just have to be careful. Time passes differently here, and we want you to have a body to return to.” She said.
“That’s alarming.” Katara laughed.
“Do you want to try to find the humans?” Yue inquired.
“What if they’re not humans?”
“We’ll be fine.”
They traveled on, moving in what they both assumed was an arc to keep close to the pond. While the thought of skipping the next few days was appealing, Katara didn’t want to go back to a grave.
“So what’s bothering you?” Yue asked and Katara sighed.
“There’s just so much. After the last lunar eclipse, I just don’t really have the energy to deal with it anymore.” She replied.
“Those are always scary for me. I can’t feel you or anything, and I don’t like being so helpless.” Yue said.
“At least you don’t have a physical body. I think that’s how I’m going to die.” Katara muttered.
“Oh, no, that was the same for me when I was alive. I had to stay in the oasis during an eclipse because I almost died each time.” Yue corrected and Katara winced.
“Sorry.”
“I forgive you.” Yue flashed her a grin and swam forward again. “So how’s Zuko?”
“He’s…” Katara drifted and looked away.
“What’s the matter?”
“How did it feel when you knew that no matter what, you weren’t going to be able to marry Sokka?”
When Yue stayed quiet, Katara looked back at her. Still floating in the air, Yue was looking off in the distance.
“I’m guessing you mean before I died.” She said.
“Yeah.”
Yue sighed and rocked backward, reclining in the air.
“There just wasn’t another option for me. There was a war going on, and my father needed the support.” She answered.
“I know you said that I should marry Zuko and become Fire Lady, but I don’t know if that’s what our tribe needs.” Katara said. “I love him so much, but every world leader is standing in our way.”
“Every single one?” Yue questioned.
Katara frowned and waved her away.
“Near about.” She muttered.
“There’s the two of you, and I think that should be enough.” Yue stated primly.
“On what authority?” Katara pushed Yue’s floating body and watched her lazily rotate.
“On my own authority, as the spirit of yearning.” She needled and Katara groaned.
“I just want to know everything is going to work out.” She said and Yue lowered herself, putting her feet on the ground. With her hair and robes, it still looked like she was made of silk, being pulled through the water.
“Katara,” Yue said and took her hands. “What does that even mean?”
Her flippant question, coming from a serene and godly face, made Katara laugh.
“No seriously.” Yue continued, sounding on the edge of laughter herself. “Things can work out, but how you feel about it depends on so many things. I mean, look at me.”
“You? Look at me!” Katara countered. “I’m some kind of Avatar knock off with this miserable little connection.”
“What are you worried about?” Yue pressed.
Lowering her head, Katara sighed again. She ran her thumbs over the backs of Yue’s hands, desperate to feel something.
“I just don’t want my desires to overcome me again. I want to know that I’m not going to hurt anyone and that this choice, this marriage, it’s not going to ruin anything.” Katara explained.
“Is that what you think happened?” Yue asked.
Katara shook her head.
“If it was fate, it’s not my fault, right? It was supposed to happen. But that’s so dumb.” Katara looked back up at Yue. “I chose that for all the wrong reasons. I want some confirmation that I’m choosing this for the right ones.”
“Well, we both know you’re not going to listen to me.” Yue said and swung their hands back and forth.
“What do you mean?” Katara asked, affronted.
“I’ve already told you my answer and you’ve obviously ignored it if you’re still being a baby about this.” Yue answered and released her hands.
“Hey!” Katara chased after her as Yue floated back into the sky.
“Wait, do you feel that?” Yue asked, pausing and rotating around.
“Yeah…” Katara murmured, also looking around. The air was warm, which was impossible since she didn’t have a physical body.
“The veil is thinner here. I wonder…” Yue drifted, in thought and body, and Katara watched her.
“It’s the solstice!” Yue chirped.
“What?” Katara exclaimed but Yue patted her hands in the air.
“Calm down. I told you time is different here. You’re still fine, I can see you at the pond.” She said.
“Well which solstice?” Katara demanded.
Yue regarded the empty space, rolling over to examine the patch of nothing from other angles.
“Definitely summer, and in the northern hemisphere. But I can’t tell if it’s a past one or future one.” She said.
“The past?” Katara stepped closer to the spot Yue regarded, trying to see what Yue did.
“Sure, why do you think so many humans are desperate to get here? The potential to see the future is too tempting to pass up.” Yue said and straightened. “It’s a good thing the monks and some very confused Waterbenders are the ones who usually manage to find their way.”
“Is someone trying to come through?” Katara asked, taking a step back.
“Maybe. Spots like this open up all the time and no one notices them.” Yue shrugged. “I mean, a lot of them are miles in the air or deep underwater, but eh.”
“I think we should head back.” Katara said.
The empty patch started to shimmer and she took a few more steps back.
A figure walked through the patch, making Yue yelp. He was tall and his long hair was clipped back. His topknot and pointed beard made Katara’s absent heart stop.
It took her a moment to realize that this man had a different face than Roku, and she recognized it just as the man recognized her.
“Katara?” Zuko asked.
He was forty years older than she had last seen him.
“Zuko.” Katara whispered as Zuko looked over his shoulder. He looked back at her, confused.
It made her laugh.
“What are you doing here? Why aren’t you in-” He started but Katara shushed him, waving her hands in the air.
“Ssh! I’m not there yet!” She said sharply. “I’m still, I mean, we haven’t… Spirits, we do end up getting married, right?”
Zuko stared at her before doubling over, laughing.
“Married? You look so young.” He wheezed.
“I’m twenty-five!” Katara balked.
“Hello Zuko, it’s been awhile.” Yue interrupted and Zuko stood, his chest still jumping as he contained his mirth.
“Yue, I know you’ve been busy.” He said.
“So you know!” Katara accused.
Yue gave another of her fairylike shrugs.
“I know sometimes. This hadn’t happened yet, so I didn’t know. But also, I’ve met you both over and over through the years. I can only tell you things linearly since that’s how your minds work.” She explained. “Once you ascend, you’ll understand.”
“Asce-” Katara squeezed her eyes shut and pinched the bridge of her nose. “No. Nevermind. That’s a tomorrow conversation.”
“Katara, I’m surprised to see you. But it’s...wow.” Zuko said and approached. Katara lowered her hand and found him right in front of her.
If she had a pulse, it would have thundered up her neck to make her blush to her hairline.
Spirits above and below he was still handsome.
“I always said you are as beautiful as the day I met you.” He said, taking her face in his hands.
Katara would have ripped the spirit world apart to have her body here.
“I probably look like my grandmother.” She mumbled.
The corner of his mouth hitched.
“Do you want me to tell you?” He asked.
Katara sputtered and he laughed.
“Blazes, I know you’re my wife but I feel like a lecherous old man.” Zuko said and lowered his hands.
“So we get married?” She asked meekly.
“We do. And so far, you’ve stayed married to me.” He replied.
“I want to ask about so many things, but that feels like it’s cheating.”
“It does take the fun out of things.”
“But can you tell me if everything ends up okay? I mean, you’re here, we’re still married, so everything works out, right?” Katara questioned.
Zuko stroked his beard, looking so much more like his uncle with that simple gesture.
“There’s a lot that happens in the forty-some years. A lot I’d love to change or avoid.” He mused. He shook his head and crossed his arms loosely at his chest.
“We’re all safe and happy. Everyone that you know and love is fine.” Zuko said.
“And us? We’re still, how we are now?” Katara questioned. Her tone caught him off guard and he looked surprised.
“Katara, if anything, you and I get better.” He said.
The empty patch behind him shimmered again and Yue clapped her hands.
“Well, time to go!” She said.
“But I want to see!” Katara pleaded as Yue grabbed her arm.
“Say goodbye to your husband.” She said and Katara pulled against her.
“Wait!” She said, but Yue pulled her up, launching them both miles into the sky.
As Yue dragged her back to the pond, Katara tried to keep the image of the woman who started through the portal. Her hair was long and curly, tied back in loops. She was so young.
~
“Who was that?” Riza asked.
Zuko patted her back and they started forward.
“Your mother.” He said.
“What?” Riza shrieked and Zuko chuckled, stroking her hair.
“She hasn’t gotten to that part yet, and you were absolutely meant to be a surprise.” He said.
“Da-ad!” Riza whined, pulling on his arm.
“You’re just trying to get out of finding Bumju. You lost him and it’s your responsibility to find him.” Zuko said.
“UGH.”

~ Ama ☾ ~
The only source of light were the two candles in my room, on my bed stand. And let me tell you, the dusky setting did not help the overly cautious and alert war veterans that were Zuko and I. I sat up in the bed, slowly slipping my legs over the side to prepare for an attack while Zuko was at the door. I had no clue who was on the other side. At this hour especially, it was a bit frightening.
Was it Suh? Was she here to finish me off? My mind jumped to a terrifying conclusion. My heartbeat picked up and my jaw clenched. I held a tight breath as Zuko carefully twisted the doorknob and opened the door enough to just see who it was.
“What are you doing here?” The all too familiar voice of my brother asked Zuko. I let out my breath and almost wanted to laugh loudly at myself for getting so worked up. “Ama!” Sokka noticed me awake and sitting up. He excitedly sprinted over at full speed with the biggest grin. I barely had time to react and could only hold my arms out defensively when he practically jumped on me, pulling me into a tight hug.
Aching pain shot through my body at both the sudden movement and his strong arms crushing. “Ow. Sokka. That hurts.” I grumbled through my teeth. In the back of my mind, I scolded myself. Didn’t seem to mind the pain a few moments ago.
My brother immediately pulled away, and yet again, his jolting movements to push himself off me only hurt me more and I groaned lightly. “Sorry.” He apologized with an apprehensive side smile. He kept his hands on my shoulders, his eyes studying me like I was some sort of extraordinary creature. “You’re an idiot, you know that?” Even though he used his humorous expression, I still saw a tear forming in his eye.
“Me? An idiot?” I faked a bewildered tone and dramatically placed a fanned hand over my chest. “I believe a proper description would be an unimaginably attractive and remarkable nincompoop.”
Sokka scoffed and shook his head at me. “She’s making jokes. Of course, she is.” He mumbled to himself, etched with disbelief, amusement, and a tinge of disappointment. “You had us all worried. Katara and Aang even postponed their honeymoon.”
“What?” My shoulder slumped and I frowned. “They were so excited for Ember Island. They didn’t have to do that.”
“Oh, okay. So the next time someone almost permanently departs from the living, everyone else should just go out and enjoy themselves.” My brother crossed his arms over his chest and gave me a chiding look.
My brother was naturally a grumpy, glass-half-empty kinda guy. I was used to his little taunts and nonsense scoldings, but there was always some humor laced in everything he’d say. But right now, there was none of that. He showed nothing but deep concern. It was starting to anchor me to the gravity of my situation. How I quite literally almost died.
My face softened but the rest of my body tensed up. I inhaled deeply, internally hoping that the subject changed quickly.
Luckily, Zuko was still in the room. With his arms crossed and a perplexed frown, he approached the bed but stood beside us while my brother and I were still seated on the side. “Sokka, what are you doing up?” He redirected the conversation. I wasn’t sure if it was because he saw my dejected look or because he was just curious as to why Sokka was here.
“Couldn’t sleep.” Sokka shrugged. “Spent most of the night tossing and turning. Then I heard some talking in here, thought my big sister had finally woken up.” He ruffled my hair. I just rolled my eyes at him and raked my fingers through my smooth hair. Katara must have made sure I was cleaned and well taken care of. “What about you, mister Fire Lord? What are you doing up? Specifically in my sister’s room.”
Zuko and I glanced at each other. His face flushed nervously and he opened his mouth unsurely. “Uh… just talking,” Zuko answered stiffly. I wanted to slap my own forehead at him. This gorgeous buffoon.
“How convincing.” Sokka mumbled, glancing away from Zuko and I in disgust. His mind probably just went to the worst possible thought.
“Not like that. What I mean to say is that we were just discussing things and then you came in-” Zuko rubbed the back of his neck as he talked quickly.
“I don’t need to know.” Sokka interrupted him, his hand out in between him and Zuko. I chuckled lightly at the interaction. “Anyways, I should go get Katara and the others! They’ll be so happy to know that you’re awake.” My brother excitedly jumped up from the bed.
My hand immediately grabbed his wrist, stopping him from walking away. “Sokka, no.” My firm tone made him look at me with confusion. “Let them sleep, I’ll see them tomorrow and can get the rundown of everything.”
“Don’t be ridiculous, they won’t mind.” He shrugged and tried to leave again. But my grip only got tighter. Sokka wasn’t fighting against my hold, afraid that he’d hurt me.
“Please, Sokka. Just don’t tell anyone I’m awake till tomorrow.” I didn’t want to, but my voice was small and begging. I hated it. And I hated the pitiful look my brother was giving me.
He nodded quietly and when my grip softened he slipped his hand away. “Fine. But if Katara complains, you’re to blame.”
“I can handle that.” I forced a small smile on my lips. I’d rather deal with her scolding than to have to deal with so many people in my room at the moment.
Tapping Zuko’s bicep, Sokka cocked his head towards the door and asked “You coming?”
“In a minute,” Zuko replied. His focus was on me while I placed with my fingernails. Sokka looked like he wanted to say something but instead decided against it. Looked between Zuko and me skeptically while he backed away towards the door without another word. Once the door was shut, Zuko sat down next to me, placing his rough hand over mine, effectively making me stop fidgeting. “What is it?” He asked softly, rubbing small circles on the top of my hand.
“What do you mean?” I asked back, pretending to be absolutely clueless.
“I saw the way you tensed up. How you’re refusing to see anyone. You can talk to me, you know?” His other hand came up to cup my cheek. I nodded gently, fluttered my eyes closed, and leaned into his hand affectionately, adoring the warmth that radiated from his fingertips.
It was a gift and a curse really. How he was able to read me like that. On one hand, it could push me to seek help or to talk it out. But that’s also why it was a curse. I wasn’t ready to talk about what I was feeling. I wasn’t even sure what it was myself.
“I know. Honestly, I just need a moment to myself. If you don’t mind.” I sighed, opening my eyes to directly see Zuko stiffen slightly.
He nodded rapidly. “Yeah, whatever you need.” He stood up, smoothening out his red tunic from earlier wrinkles. I smiled, gazing at him as he nervously did that. No matter how suave he got, there was still a tiny bit of that awkward part of him that I fell in love with all those years ago. Leaning down with a soft smirk he pressed a delicate kiss on my forehead. “Please don’t hesitate to come to talk to me when you need it.” Hid lips grazed over my skin delicately while he spoke, barely hovering over my forehead.
I bit my bottom lip. My heart fluttered at his touch and his vocal expression to be there for me. It was ironic how a few years ago the roles were reversed. “Alright,” I whispered. His tender touch left me entirely, suddenly making me feel so cold. He walked away backward half the way out, keeping a warm gaze on me the entire time before he was out the door.
I was left completely alone. In a dimly lit room. With just my thoughts. A shaky breath escaped me. It’s been itching to come out since I woke up. I shut my eyes tightly and took a deep, quivering breath in.
I… died. But how was I still here? I wanted to ask, but that would mean having to talk about it. Call me selfish, but I’d prefer not to talk about how I died and then was revived only minutes after waking up. Not if I was only just grasping the fact.
My inhales and exhales went on for a while. Until I realized I needed to get out of this bed. Swinging my legs over the side, I stood up. But, I wasn’t prepared to put so much weight on my legs, and stumbled back on to the mattress. I moaned in discomfort. My sore muscles ached everywhere. Like they were being pulled and tugged in every direction. Once the pain subsided, I stood back up, more slowly than last time, and carefully made my way to my bathroom.
A hot bath was just what I needed. I was only in my nightgown. Making it simple to painlessly slipped it over my head and discard it on the floor. Standing there, completely bare and in front of a large mirror, I felt vulnerable.
Even with my clothing on, a person could tell that I was toned. I wasn’t overly muscular, but not scrawny. Overall I looked healthy. But once the layers of clothing were removed, my scars were revealed. The unhealed scabs from when I was a kid, the training mishaps, the acne scars on my back. And now, two new ones decorated my skin. On my upper abdomen, a light pink and sharp oval scar painted my skin. And the second was on the opposite side of my body, on my back.
I had no problem with scars. I liked to think that they told stories about people, whether good or bad. And sometimes they showcased just how beautiful a person was. Zuko’s scar was a prime example. What once made him feel disgraced and like a failure now meant more. It showed how he was able to change into a better man and to lead the world into a new era. He took his father’s horrific mutilation and turned it into a symbol of who he was. It was beautiful in my eyes.
But the new one in the mirror… It made my stomach drop. My fingers hesitantly tracing over the soft skin. The memory of the sword sticking through my body flashed in the mirror. The feeling of blood sticking my clothing to my skin. The knowledge that I was dying and didn’t want to. Trying so desperately to stay alive.
A wave of lightheadedness flooded me. I sank backwards, gripping the side of the bathtub to steady myself. The sound of running water got louder and louder as the truth settled in.
         I died.
.☽☼☾.
Just as expected, my room was crowded the very next morning. Extra chairs had to be moved in to provide seating for everyone who was deemed useful to help tell the story of the other night and to discuss the situation at hand. I was almost completely clueless. I still didn’t know how I was alive. I didn’t know what happened to Suh or Azula. There were so many questions and even more sub questions to them. But, I supposed they would all be answered in a minute.
I sat in my bed, leaning my back against multiple pillows while I was anxiously waiting for everyone to get here. Currently, the only people missing were Zuko and Aang. The others made small talk, their voices low like how one would speak at a hospital.
“Are you comfortable?” Katara asked me quietly, placing a soft hand over mine.
I nodded at her with a small smile. “Yes, Kat. I’m comfortable. But we really didn’t have to host a meeting in my room.” I raised a half-amused brow at her.
My sister shrugged her shoulders and avoided eye contact with me. “Just being precautionary.” She mumbled, pulling away from me to stand comfortably, with her arms crossed and leaning on one leg.
A quiet and short knock at the door resonated through the room, Letting us know that either Aang or Zuko was here. Without waiting for a response to come in, the door opened and they both entered. Aang went straight to Katara while Zuko strolled behind him, but instead was trying to get to me. Flashing me a handsome smile and carrying a cup of tea.
Stopping next to Katara, he handed me the ceramic, blue accented cup. “Uncle Iroh made it for you.” He told me. Smiling widely, I gladly took the drink. The heat of it almost instantaneously warmed my hands and the herbal aroma of it gave me instant comfort.
A pleasant sigh left my lips. “He didn’t have to, but I’m not complaining,” I commented as the cup came up to my lips for a sip.
“Alright, now that we’re all here,” Aang got right down to business, clasping his hands together. “We should probably address… everything.” Zuko backed up to the last seat available. It was further from me than I’d like, but it was probably best for Katara to be directly next to me, anyways.
“Yes. I need to know everything that happened.” I enthusiastically agreed. Pushing away the growing feeling of anxiety. It felt like a thick bubble was growing in my chest, making it difficult to pace my breathing. But I managed to play off like nothing was wrong. Keeping a curious expression and keeping an eye on Aang, letting him know that I was listening.
“Okay, so I guess I’ll start with when you threw Azula out of the venue.” Aang’s voice was etched with wariness. Like he was walking on eggshells.
“Honestly, if anything good came out of that night, it was watching Azula get thrown out of the window.” Sokka chuckled. Breaking some of the uneasy tension of the room.
“Other than your sister getting married?” Katara refuted. Her eyes narrowed at our brother and crossed her arms over her chest like she was challenging him.
“Ohhh.” My voice progressively got higher while I brought my tea up to drink again.
“Okay, let me backtrack. It was one of the good things that came out of that night.” Katara huffed at her brother’s poor attempt to save his ass. But she didn’t push it any further.
Aang cleared his throat, getting the attention back. “Moving on. After you went after Azula, the rest of us were left with the others working with Azula. We were able to get most of them outside so that the guests wouldn’t be in as much danger.”
“Were there a lot of them?” I interrupted. Remembering that I didn’t get a good look at exactly how many people Azula recruited. My focus was solely on her. Seeing nothing but red at the time.
Aang shrugged. “We couldn’t get an accurate count. Maybe 30 or so.”
“We have 26 of them in custody, but we’re almost positive that some of them were able to escape,” Sokka added, his humorous personality was put aside to join in on the seriousness of the situation.
The room got silent; perhaps one of the oddest things for this particular group of friends. They were dancing around anything that was related to my death. Like I’d crack at any moment. I realized that I’d need to push them a bit in order to have my questions answered rather than just get them told to me naturally. “Okay, so what about Suh? Was she apprehended?”
“Suh escaped,” Zuko answered me regrettably while no one else wanted to. He hunched over in his seat, leaning his elbows on his thighs and intertwining his fingers.
I held my breath for a moment. On the exterior, I nodded understandably and looked composed. But on the interior, I was stiffening. Fear engulfed me at this new knowledge. The woman that I simply thought was just a weasel snake and posed no real threat, was now someone who’s name made me quiver.
“Cool cool cool,” I responded while softly nodding my head. “Any leads on where she might be?”
A loud and irritated huff came from Toph as the woman lounged in her chair like she had no care in the world. “Nope. The wench disappeared in the snow like the coward she is.”
“She could be on a boat to the Fire Nation or maybe even the Earth Kingdom for all we know,” Sokka added in exasperation. His jaw clenched slightly and his hand ran through his loose hair. Suki took notice in his annoyance, placing a hand on his shoulder to comfort him.
My eyebrows furrowed as another question came up. “Why didn’t anyone go after her?” I tried to hide the bothered, hurt tone in my voice, but it still spilled ever so slightly.
“We were kind of preoccupied. Ya know with you dying and 300 plus guests to protect.” Katara looked at me with her eyes narrowed and a frown in a baffled expression.
“Alright, so what are we doing to find her then?” I stressed. My shoulders hardened and my face twisted in frustration.
“We have guards placed all around the South Pole on the lookout for her and we’ve sent out messages to the Fire Nation and the Earth Kingdom that she is to be brought into custody,” Sokka answered.
My first instinct to shout at them, tell them that’s not enough. But reason kept me from doing that. Sokka was good at planning and organizing things like these. I trust that he knows what he’s doing. “And Azula?” I moved on. The room was quiet again. “Oh, for the love of Tui and La, can you all please stop dancing around each subject and just tell me everything,” I grumbled a bit too angrily.
“Ama…” My sister softly started, placing a hand on my shoulder. “Do you need a minute, we can discuss this later-”
“No! I don’t want to discuss this later.” I exclaimed in exasperation. “I died! Okay! Moving on. Give me the rundown, we figure out the next steps and move on with our lives. The sooner this conversation happens, the sooner that can happen.”
“Are you sure? You seem a little… emotional.” Commented Aang in a nervous matter, noting my paler than usual complexion.
“For once, I agree with Twinkle Toes. Ama, you’re acting differently and it’s actually kind of concerning.” Toph repositioned herself in her seat, sitting up more intensively.
I composed myself quickly, burying the boiling anxiety deep inside. “Yes, I’m sure,” I answered calmly, with a light smile. Doing my best to act like I normally would.
Everyone in the room looked a little hesitant, sneaking quick and confused glances at each other. “Alright.” Aang sighed. “Well, Azula’s currently locked up. She’s been interrogated and everything. There’s just one thing we don’t know.”
“What did you say to her?” Zuko finished. His brow curving upwards slightly, matched with a curious but hopeful glint in his eye.
“What do you mean?” My face twisted and my head tilted in confusion.
“Ama, Azula was the one who saved your life,” Katara informed me smoothly, also giving me an inquisitive look.
My jaw fell and my eyes widened. “Azula saved me?” I repeated in a whisper; more to myself than to anyone else. “How?”
Katara sat next to me on the bed, placing her hand over mine. “I was able to heal your wound after you died, but Azula was somehow able to use electricity to restart your heart. Bringing you back to life.”
"I always knew there was a soft side to her." Ty lee commented quietly. She was gazing at the floor in deep thought. Her ever so chipper smile was absent from her expression and instead looked glum and distressed.
"But that doesn't excuse everything she's done," Mai added, louder than Ty Lee, and with more anger and hurt. Her lips were pursed and her eyes narrowed. "Ama, you’re the last person who needs to place your vote in what to do with her. Because someone," she glared at Zuko. "Still hasn't made any definite decisions on whether to do the reasonable thing and put her in an isolated prison or some other absurd idea.”
“I don’t want to do anything drastic just yet,” Zuko spoke with a grumble like he’s explained that a thousand times before. Straightening up in his seat in defense.
“Killing her would be drastic, not throwing her in jail. But then again, it’s not like she doesn’t deserve it.” Toph commented in a mumble.
“How is making Azula pay for her crimes drastic?” Sokka embitterly and loudly wondered. “Not only did she have people murdered, but she also committed crimes against the Fire Nation. Against you, Zuko.”
“Azula didn’t have anyone killed.” I corrected him. Everyone looked at me with worry. To they’re knowledge, Azula ordered for her henchmen to murder my friends and Mulan. And while it was her associate, Suh, who tried to kill me. I was almost positive that Azula didn’t really want anyone dead. “I need to talk to Azula,” I said suddenly, throwing my legs over the side of the bed to get up and leave.
Katara immediately stood up as well, placing her hands on my shoulders to keep me on the bed. “Ama, you need to rest!” She forcefully told me.
“I slept for like 2 days, I don’t need rest.” I countered matter of factly, swiping her hands off my shoulders. I would only admit to myself that my arms ached at the movement. But my stubbornness kept me going and I tried to stand up.
Yet again, my sister forced me to sit down again. “Yes, you do. Your wound might be healed, but we really don’t know how your body is. After all, you were… dead,” She hesitated to say the word. “For a good few minutes.”
“You weren’t like this when Aang woke up after he died.” I pointed out, motioning my hand to her husband and looked over at him. The poor man looked so terrified in his current position. Aang was great at solving problems, being the Avatar and all, but he seemed to have no clue how to help solve this particular debacle between his wife and her headstrong sister. “Sorry to use you as an example, Aang. But your the only other person I know who’s died and came back to life so-”
“Will you stop treating this like dying and coming back to life is something normal.” Katara tensely sucked in a breath and shook her head at me. She may have just exploded right then and there based on how her body shook in frustration and the vein that almost popped out of her forehead.
“Well, it has happened twice in Team Avatar,” I commented, bouncing my brows and shrugging nonchalantly.
Everyone in the room collectively sighed. They were all so in sync I might have thought it was planned. Katara pinched the bridge of her nose and shut her eyes tightly, her other hand resting on her hip. “Snowcone, you need to learn to keep your mouth shut.” I heard Toph sigh deeply. I kept my eyes on my sister, already knowing she had something to say.
"First.” She started, now crossing her arms and giving me a stern look. “Aang was in a coma for weeks in comparison to you waking up after two days. Second. We had Spirit Water. It works and we knew it. We don’t know anything about how the lightning worked or how your body is reacting. You can’t just jump up, go on runs, or in general just use your body like you normally would.”
My jaw dropped and my eyes widened. “I can’t train?” I worried. My breathing was already starting to get irregular and heavy. Beating the absolute shit out of training dummies was my favorite and reliable way to relieve stress. It kept me active and alert. Without it, I was left with what? I didn’t even know.
“Give your body time.” My sister’s voice was comforting and her hands came up to rub the sides of my arms. The simultaneous up and down motion and the small circles she made with her thumb was enough to calm me down before I started to get too emotional. “For now just go on walks, rest more often. Don’t push yourself physically.”
“Fine.” I let out an exasperated sigh and gave my sister a heavy expression. “But, I still need to talk to Azula, though.”
“Why?” Mai wondered dully, but behind her dank tone and her languid face, there was a deep dislike for Azula. Maybe even hatred. I understood why. It was Azula who had manipulated her father to have her brother and many other kids kidnapped. In their childhood, it was Azula who’d tormented her friends.
I definitely still held hatred for the malicious woman. But the other night I saw something else too. A lost woman who had no one to turn to. Guilt was consuming her. So much so that she planned an elaborate suicide attempt. I needed to know more. Especially since she saved my life. “She said something the other night. I just need to know what she meant.” I told them the bare minimum. Because Azula said a lot of things. There were some things she said that were more concerning than others. But overall, her entire plot was loosely lined up. There were gaps that needed to be filled and actions that needed justifications. “After all, if it weren’t for her I wouldn’t even be here right now.”
Toph giggled loudly, shaking her head and resting her forehead on her hand. “If you think Azula is capable of some sort of redemption, you're even more blind than I am.”
Furrowing my brows and crossing my arms over my chest. “I never said that!” And with a light shrug and my eyes softening, I avoided making eye contact with anyone as I focused my gaze at the still-hot tea while I grabbed it off the bedside table. “But perhaps there may some a smidge of hope that-”
“Ama!” Katara interrupted, her eyes staring down at me with concern and her tone a tad bit high-pitched like she was offended by my words. “After everything she’s done in the war, crashing my wedding, she had Mulan killed! She’s also responsible for you dying!”
“She had my brother kidnapped!” Mai added. This time she wasn’t expressionless when she looked at me. Her lips curved down and slightly parted in disgust, her brows curved up like she was puzzled. This may have been one of the few times I’ve seen her express multiple emotions at once.
“Suh attempted murder, not Azula. And it was Azula who saved my life!” I defended the woman who I never thought I’d advocate for. “As for everything she’s done years ago, she was still a teenager. At her age, Zuko was still a bratty and spoiled prince. She just didn’t have the guidance he did with Iroh.” I scanned the room. Each person had their own expression. Whether it be contemplative, like Aang, or irritated, like Mai.
There was only one person who I couldn’t read. Zuko.
The Fire Lord sat at the edge of his seat, back into his hunched over position. His elbows rested on his knees and his chin rested on his intertwined hands. His eyes were kept on me and when I looked over, our eyes met. He didn’t look expressionless or dull. Maybe calm. Maybe hiding disgust. Maybe something else.
My sister's long, tired sigh broke the silence. My eyes tore from Zuko’s to give Katara my attention. “Well, I suppose if you need to talk to Azula, I’m okay with it.” She caved. “But not now. This morning has been draining enough and you need to rest.” I rolled my eyes and huffed at that. But if I argued against her, I don’t know if she’d still clear me to even leave the room. “If everyone else is okay with it, you can go after lunch.”
I looked towards the group with begging, hopeful eyes. “I think it’s a good idea to talk to her.” Aang nodded, giving me a kind smile.
“Fine.” Sokka irritatedly answered, crossing his arms and leaning back into his seat. “I’ll be ready to say ‘I told you so’ when the time comes.”
“Mai?” I shrugged my shoulders curiously at her.
The reserved woman let out a long sigh and her long, black nails tapped the armrest while she rolled her eyes. “Whatever. As long as you’re just talking and not pardoning her for all the crimes she’s committed.”
“Of course not, Mai,” I assured her. I may have been able to give Azula a chance at redemption, but no way was I about to forget everything she’s done. From tracking down Aang and the rest of the team to ruining Katara’s special day, Azula was guilty. Yet despite all of that, I wanted — no — needed an explanation from her. To hear Azula express her intentions in full detail.
Ty Lee jolted out of her seat, her chair made a painfully cringing screech as it rubbed against the floor. “Excuse me for a moment.” She said meekly, avoiding all eye contact while she walked towards the door. Just before stepping out, she looked over her shoulder. “And I think talking to Azula is a great place to start.” She quietly made her input and left the room.
Everyone stared at the closed door in surprise. Ty Lee was a small person with a big personality. To see her act so shy was completely out of character. Something was bothering her. And it had to do with Azula. But what? That was the question. Ty Lee adored the firebender since they were kids. She valued her relationships with others wholeheartedly. But Azula betrayed that friendship long ago. I wondered what Ty Lee was feeling. Seeing her old friend again. It must have taken a toll on her just like on everyone else.
Mai worryingly stood up moments after Ty Lee left. “I’ll go see if she's okay.” She mumbled hastily, walking the steps Ty Lee took out the door.
“Well that was weird.” Toph commented, bouncing her eyebrows and then slouched in her seat. “I suppose you need my blessing now. Sure, go talk to the crazy lady. Tell her ‘Toph sends her regards’ and throw a rock at her for me, would ya?”
I couldn’t help laughing at the thought of chucking a rock at Azula. “Tempting, but I think she’d be less inclined to talk to me if I threw a rock at her.” I replied while my laughter died down.
“Do it after.” Toph shrugged, completely unbothered.
Suki giggled slightly and Sokka snorted a laugh, looking at the ceiling dreamily. “That would be a sight.”
“Let’s refrain from throwing anything at anyone, please.” Katara sighed and rolled her eyes. “Zuko, Suki. We’ve still yet to hear from you guys.”
“You guys know me.” Suki shrugged her shoulders, giving us all a thin smile. “If taking to Azula is the best course of action for the time being, I’m okay with it.”
All eyes were now on Zuko. He kept his eyes on me, rather than paying anyone else any attention. A small smile played on his lips. “Azula is my sister. I know that what she’s done is inexcusable, but I’d like a more in depth explanation from her. So yeah. I think you should go.” His eyes flickered to his hands and then back at me. He wanted to say something else, I knew it. Maybe it was the fact that there were still so many of us in one room or maybe he was still mulling it over. Either way, he held back. And left his words at that.
“Alright then. I guess, it’s settled. Ama talks to Azula later today and a definite decision on what happens to her will come short after.” Katara concluded the conversation. “Did we miss anything? Is there anything else we need to know?” She pondered glancing at everyone.
My lips parted slightly. Do I mention that I bloodbended the other night? Without the full moon? Yes, it was important information, but it still felt so surreal to me. And no one really needed to know about it, right? It’s not like I’d use it ever again. But then again. The rush I felt when I had full control over someone else. It was exhilarating. Made me feel powerful. But I shouldn’t feel that way. It was a horrid thing to do. The other person went through excruciating pain. But I still revealed the feeling I got. Would the others judge me for it? No one would hate me for bloodbending, I knew that much. But for enjoying it…
“Nothing? Okay, good.” Katara spoke before I even had the chance to speak. I let out a relieved sigh. I didn’t have to come clean about anything just yet. “Alright everyone, out. Ama needs to rest.” I rolled my eyes in a playful tone at her overcautious procedures. But I appreciated it deeply.
Zuko took the few steps to the side of the bed, beside me, with a gentle smile. I beamed at him as the tall man leaned down, pressing a short and simple kiss on my lips. “I’ll come by for lunch.” He told me, pulling away from me.
“Would you? I hate eating alone.” My fingers intertwined together and went under my chin as I looked up at him with begging eyes.
He chuckled lightly at me, never letting his eyes leave mine. “Can’t think of anything else I’d rather do. I’ll see you soon.” I could hardly contain my smile at the promise. Walking around the bed, Zuko headed to the door, where everyone else had been watching with wide eyes, smirks, or grins.
Katara’s jaw was dropped, her eyes flickering between Zuko and I as a light blush found my cheeks and the Fire Lord grinned. “Haha! I knew it!” Suki triumphantly punched her fist in the air.
“Next time wait until we leave the room.” I heard Toph grumbled, following Suki out.
Katara’s surprise face morphed, and she now looked at us with amusement. “Maybe a warning next time you guys get back together.” My sister giggled. “Was not expecting that.”
Zuko just shrugged at her and then looked over his shoulder to wink at me before he walked out the door. Aang also chuckled at the scene, but right before he stepped out with everyone else be pause. “Actually.” He mumbled and then looked over at me with his brows slightly furrowed. “Ama, may I talk with you for a minute. Won’t last long.”
“Yeah, of course.” I smiled at him positively. The door closed behind him as he walked over to the stop that Katara spent most of the meeting.
His grey eyes and smile were soft as he looked down at my sitting figure. “I just want to say how much I admire your ability to try and give Azula a chance to change. I know it’s hard given everything she’s done. But it shows a lot of growth on your part.”
“Thank you, Aang.” I nodded appreciatively. “Means a lot coming from you.”
“As the Avatar, I know.” He grinned proudly.
I huffed a laugh and shook my head, “As a part of the family.”
Aang’s face turned crimson. “I’m family?” He goggled, his smile only getting wider.
“Aang.” I chuckled, lightly punching his arm to avoid hurting myself. “You’ve been family for years.”
“Yeah, but now it just means more.” He rugged the back of his neck, still as red as a tomato. “Anyways, I’ll let you get some more rest. And just let me know if you need anyone to talk to. Like you said before, I’m the only one who’s died and come back to life before.”
I bounced my eyebrows at the reminder, giving him a forced, flat smile. “I’ll keep it in mind, Aang.” I told him.
Flashing me one more smile, the Avatar left the room. Leaving me alone. At least, until noon. Biting my bottom lip, I felt my face heat up at the thought of Zuko coming in later for lunch. Our friends just found out we’re back together and we’ve made it pretty clear that our old feelings are back. And while Suh was still out there, she was no longer a part of the equation. There’s nothing stopping us from being together.

Part 20 Curly Kyoshi Zuko
I rewrote it entirely because I was mad that it deleted in the first place. Please enjoy this. It took a lot of effort to recreate, and I think I made it better tbh
The morning after the Seige Kurt found himself tangled up under the sheets with Kahno. His back against the larger man's chest and trapped in his arms as if he was a teddy bear. He shifted a little and cuddled closer, not wanting to wake up. He gasped when his hair was ruffled "good morning little flare" Kahno rumbled out before placing a kiss to the back of Kurt's head
Kurt whined "no, not morning"
"Not morning?" Kahno mused while holding back a laugh as he let Kurt turn around and face him "arent firebenders supposed to rise with the sun?"
"Yeah but it doesn't mean we actually get out of bed, its cold and I dont remember where my jacket went after we came back last night" he wrapped his arms around Kahno's waste and pulled him closer "I just want to stay in bed with you a little bit longer, besides Aang doesnt want to head out until noon so I want to spend as much time as possible with you before I leave"
"I uh, I actually was going to come with you.." Kahno said which made Kurt push back against his chest
"No way!" He was smiling "no way! Are you serious?"
"Yeah, Katara convinced me, she knew we'd be miserable apart so she told me as such and it didn't take much after that... she's pretty terrifying."
Kurt laughed "yeah, she acts like an older sister to me.. even though she's younger"
"Yeah, thats because your tiny"
"Im not THAT tiny"
"Oh yeah?" Kahno smirked "not tiny huh?" He shifted so he was hovering over Kurt who now felt like a mouse beneath a tiger
"Okay. Okay, I get it. And that was fun last night but uh, not... not right now" kurts face couldnt get any redder "I uh, I just want to cuddle please"
Kahno laughed "I know, I was only teasing you." He moved them so Kahno was yet again being held like a teddy bear. "You might be tiny but you demolished a firenation warship in one go-"
"It took all of my energy though, so that sucked"
"Yeah, but you still did it. You're more powerful than you think."
"And so are you!" Kurt retorted back
There was a knock on the door "I know you want to sleep in love birds but youre gonna want breakfast before he hit the air!" Katara called from the other side, though it was a bit muffled.
Kurt let out a loud groan "I dont wanna!"
"Get up now before I come in there and give you a cold healing treatment, you know your cheek isn't fully healed yet"
"Yknow, cold healing actually sounds nice Katara!"
"Oh really?" She opened the door with a hand up at the ready and a devilish grin. "Is that so?"
"Ahh! No! No! I was joking! Katara, please no! Kahno stop her! I'll get up! I'll get up! No! No! Kataraaaaa!!!"
After the cold healing it was breakfast time and Kurt was pouting with Kahno between him and Katara. Sokka however sat on the other side of him "so Mr. 'Destroyed a firenation warship for my boyfriend' how was your night?"
Kurt raised a brow "my night was alright, I spent it at Kahno's hut, what about yours? I head your trio invited princess Yue over to help her grieve about her finances death... oh my gods you guys gave her the group cuddle therapy didnt you!" Sokka nodded and Kurt let out a laugh "group cuddles are the best, especially group cuddle therapy. How's she holding up?"
"Actually she talked mostly about you the whole time, it was hard to tell her you're with Kahno while she's moping around. But she knew about it, she just thinks your adorable, and wanted to know if you could teach her to dance after the war... whatever that means"
Kurt flushed "oh, when she asked me to show her some firebending I showed her my practice forms, which are styled both like waterbending and dance."
Sokka gaped "okay, not you have to show me sometime, you know that right? You can't just tell a man about something that cool and just not show him!"
"I figured you would be spying on me and Katara's bending practice"
"Katara's seen you dance bend!?"
"It's- its not dance bending-"
"It is SO dance bending!"
Kurt sighed "alright, we'll call it dance bending. No she hasn't seen me dance bend, she's seen me firebend in the style of waterbending. Theres a difference. When I bend to relax I bend the fire like its water but I do so while dancing. Katara hasn't seen me dance"
"Wait- you dance?" Katara leaned forward to talk around Kahno "thats amazing! You have got to show us sometime, maybe I can pick up some techniques from watching you!"
Kurt shifted in his seat "yeah, I can show you sometime I guess"
"Will you two leave him alone?" Zuko chimed "He doesn't like being the center of attention... well at lease he doesn't like being the center of attention from multiple people" Zuko glanced up at Kahno who just cleared his throat.
After breakfast the group packed up their things and made their way to the ships where Appa was waiting. Kurt took a stance after tossing his items up and did a quick fire boosted flip into the saddle extinguishing the flames as he went so he didnt hurt anyone or catch anything on fire. Aang airbended himself and Katara onto the Saddle, Suki and Zuko just jumped on and Sokka was helped up by Kahno.
With that theu were in the air and on their way to find Aang and earthbending teacher. On the way there Kahno started rummaging through his bags "hey Kurt, I wanted to give you something, it was originally gonna be a 'promise you'll come back to me' sort of gift but now its more a 'promise we'll both stay alive until this is over' sort of gift." He paused as he pulled out a small deep blue band with three uncarved white stones attached to it. "Traditionally its supposed to be a necklace, but in that sense its betrothal, so I made it as a bracelet to form a sort of... promise?"
Katara and Sokka both looked at eachother while Kurt took hold of the small band. The water siblings were the ones who talked him out of making the necklace but they didn't know he had already made the bracelet. "Its... beautiful" Kurt muttere
"So, uh, do you promis-"
"Yes of course I promise you big cheesefish" he snorted "but you better promise me too" he said as he held out his hand and the bracelet.
"yeah yeah, I promise you, my little flare, that I will not die" Kahno couldnt help the smile on his face and the burning in his cheeks as he tied the bracelet on Kurts wrist.
"Little- little flare!? Oh my gods thats the cutest nickname I've ever heard!" Katara beamed "maybe I could call you that to-"
"No! Only Kahno can call me that, and even thats a stretch. If you dare call me that I won't show you my dancebending"
"I told you it'd stick" Sokka chimed in
The group fell into laughter as the flew away from the pole. Now their band of six was a band of seven.

~ Azula ~
“You never told me your brother was sleeping with a fine ass bitch like that – the last time I checked, he was with that grump.” Kayto hummed as he flicked his long delicate fingers upwards, a smirk painting his face as he lazily lounged against the wall of the mountainside. The sun was shining radiantly and cast shadows amongst Kayto’s figure, highlighting the faint brown undertones in his black hair. “Did you see the ass on her? And those red pouty lips, mhmm- the things I would do to that little flower. Just bend her over and-”
“Watch your tongue, boy.” Yakone hissed. The first words he spoke since we’ve met up. I couldn’t help, but grin, entertained at the hostility Yakone showed towards Kayto. It was fascinating how stingy Yakone has become of Zuzu’s girlfriend since he found out that she is his deceased sister’s daughter. Maybe for once in his damn life – he was starting to form a heart.
Kayto’s eyes widen, taken off guard from the growl that erupted deep in Yakone’s chest, but in a flash, he beamed, “Ahh, you already claimed her? You do know – ‘sharing is caring’ Yakone. I wouldn’t mind sharing a beauty like her.” Kayto chuckled, pushing back his long locks, but Yakone scoffed.
“That’s my niece; you’re so eager to fuck.”
Kayto’s body tensed, no longer leaning against the mountainside as he stood up straight, “No offence Yakone – but she’s far too stunning to have any relation to such a brut like yourself.”
“He’s saying the truth you fool,” I mumbled out, my arms crossed. Kayto frowned, stepping forward, “And when were you going to tell me this? Kind of important information, wouldn’t you think?” I smiled innocently as Yakone crossed his arms and leaned against the rocks, “You have one job boy – make sure your idiot of a brother-in-law doesn’t sign those papers. If they build that damn new Nation, I'll make sure you never see the light of day again.”
Kayto sighed heavily, not taking Yakone’s threat at all serious, and dramatically patted his head, “I don’t see why it matters. Let them build the damn Nation – it means more money and goods to steal.”
“You’re an idiot.” Yakone grumbled, but Kayto just snickered, “And why so? There’s really isn’t much reason not to let them play builders.”
“Do you know what’ll happen if they build that Nation?” Yakone hissed irritably. The way the vein in his head pulsed with impatience as his hands fisted into a tight ball, he was annoyed at the nobleman, and I couldn’t help but watch them entertained. Keeping to the sideline as they argued between each other.
“You think it’ll be easy to loot? If that Nation is built we’ll be going against not one, but a united force of all the damn Nations. The closer these Nations work together, the harder it is on us.” Yakone growled as he stepped forward, “We need to make sure the Nations don’t work together. Make them fight one another. Ozai was right about one thing – this world is about survival. I’ll kill and destroy anything to make sure I come out on top, and the best way to do that is from the underbelly, but I wouldn’t mind killing that bastard Zuko along the way. I want him dead.”
Kayto frowned, his hand tightly gripping the front of his shirt as he watched Yakone, wise man to be afraid of Yakone. Yakone was a tyrant – and while I may not show it or ever voice it, even I know my place with him. “You’re a savage Yakone.” Kayto scowled, before turning on his heel, “I’m leaving, I got a meeting with your favourite man – Zuko.”
“Don’t let your King sign those papers and try not to be such a horn dog, or else,” Yakone warned, waving his fingers tauntingly, showing how easy it would be for him to bend us against our will with a flick of his wrist. Kayto simply shrugged, “I get it. Azula-”
I nodded my head, watching the way Kayto grinned wickedly, “Any message you want me to relay to your dear brother?” He mused. I laughed, pushing my hair back as I pointed my chin upwards, “Don’t worry. I plan on visiting him. Some brother-sister bonding time, it’s important, after all.” Kayto snickered before leaving. His green robes blended in with the shrubbery around us as if he was taking a pleasant morning stroll.
I shifted my weight as I gazed at the back of Yakone. He was crouched, looking over the ridge, seemingly interested in watching the rays of the sun twirling along the trees - the water from the two-day rainfall was glistening under the sun. It was odd, how such a cold-hearted being ostensibly enjoyed the view of nature – who would’ve thought he was a nature lover…
“You want to kill my brother, hmm?” I spoke. Yakone didn’t flinch a bit, still crouched over as he gazed beyond the horizon. “And you wish to kill my niece.” He spoke flatly. I frowned as I kicked the dirt underneath my feet, walking over to him, “Nothing personal, she just happens to be the wick I need to destroy my brother.”
Yakone scoffed, before straightening out and turning to face me, “And your brother is the target of my plan. It seems like we’ve gotten ourselves in a bit of a stalemate, huh?” I scoffed - the irony. We both seek the same things – yet the outcome we desired was entirely different.
Yakone wanted Zuko dead while I wanted him alive.
I wanted Ying Yue dead, while he seeks to protect her – the last living relative of his.
I let my hand gently wander down his chest as I hummed to myself, “...It would seem so…stalemate.”
~ Ying Yue Jiang ~
“And then the next thing you know Suki is completely covered in mud!” Toph shouted, tears in my eyes as we laughed hysterically down the halls. Suki flushed in embarrassment as she swung her arms around as if she could somehow deflect the humiliation from her, “GOSH. IT WAS ONE TIME.” Suki cried out frustratingly. I grinned as I bumped my hip against hers, “Not fun being teased, huh?” I snickered.
Suki rolled her eyes, linking her arms with me as we giggled loudly amongst ourselves. Today was girls night since I cancelled last minute the other day. The whole ‘confessing my feelings to Zuko’ was a lot, and today, I felt comfortable enough to tell the girls the details. And it was also a chance to ask for some more…personal and intimate advice involving me, Zuko, and hopefully, the bedroom. Gosh, since when did I crave physical intimacy like this?
Toph laughed as she stomped forward, “Well, let’s go to the wine cellar and grab some bottles to bring to the spa.”
“I didn’t know Zuko offered some wine for us; I have to thank him later,” I spoke with a smile. But Suki snorted, “Uhh, I wouldn’t mention it…since he didn’t really offer…more like we know where he hides the good stuff, and we’re going to borrow some for tonight.” My eyes widen as I looked at Toph and Suki, “We can’t steal wine from the kingdom!” I screeched. Toph shrugged, “I don’t think it’s stealing…we’re bringing back the bottles...”
            “Empty?” I argued.
“Hey, at least we returned most of it, right?”
I mentally facepalmed, I swear these two drink far more than acceptable. “We just had lunch, isn’t it a bit early to get drunk?” Suki grinned madly, “It’s never to early to drink. Let’s go, Princess; we got some bottles to drink and some gossip to share~!” I couldn’t help but giggle once again, snuggling up into her arm as we skipped along the kingdom. But a broad set of doors and people standing in front caught my attention. “Hey…isn’t that…”
“They’re already done the meeting?” Suki questioned. Toph stopped walking, “Seems so, I can feel them all leaving the room.” I scanned about, seeing our boys standing in front, yet the looks on their faces seemed far from happy. Aang and Sokka looked defeated, their shoulders’ slumped as they muttered to themselves, noticeably exasperated. But my eyes trailed behind them, Zuko standing with his arms crossed as he listened to whatever they hushed about.
Although his face remained neutral, I knew better. His clenched jaw and pursed lips; Zuko was pissed. “Let’s go see…” I muttered as we slowly strolled towards them. I knew the boys were having trouble. Zuko came back to bed last night, seemingly as frustrated as he was now. Apparently, the Earth King refused to accept the construction of the new Nation, and that was before they even discussed the funding. Don’t tell me the King refused to sign the papers once again…that would be another day wasted.
Aang spotted us, his face brightening up, but more importantly, he seemed relieved to see me. “Yue is everything between you and – you know, okay?” Aang whispered as he walked over to me and enveloped me in an embrace, “It’s perfect, tell you about it later?” I whispered back, Aang nodded, “Good, I had a feeling. Zuko’s been smiling all morning – it’s scary.” I snorted as Aang moved along, walking over to greet Suki and Toph.
Sokka, in an instant, ruffled my hair, “Hey Princess. You guys drunk yet?” I blushed sheepishly as I slapped his chest, of course, he has to ruin my hair.
“Come on – girls night doesn’t always involve getting drunk.”
“Pft, tell me one girls night where one of you haven’t gotten completely plastered.” I opened my mouth to argue but to be fair; he had a point. With a huff, I danced away from Sokka, not bothering to hide the fact that I was searching for one man in particular. As my eyes gazed about, they finally fell upon the real reason why I came here.
            “Zuko…”
I waltzed towards him, my hands delicately falling upon Zuko’s chest, feeling the silk underneath my fingertips. The way his amber coloured eyes shinnied and his shoulders relax sent a smile on my face, his hands cupping my own, “Love…” Zuko muttered as he softly kissed my forehead.
            “Rough meeting?”
“He won’t sign the fucking papers.” Zuko spat under his breath, making sure that the Earth Nation advisors who were standing outside with us didn’t overhear. I sighed, Zuko seemed stressed, I could feel it in his touch. “What’s stopping him?”
Zuko huffed painstakingly loud, “That fucking asshole – Kayto. The Earth King seems pleased with the idea, and every time we think we sealed the deal, that asshole whispers into the King’s ear like a little devil on his shoulder. I swear, I’m gonna kill him myself.”
I sighed, letting my hand gently caress Zuko’s face, trying to soothe him. This was beyond worrying – Zuko needed the Earth King to sign those documents. Sure, Zuko could just build the Nation without his acceptance, but we all knew that would be another thorn between the two Nations. “I’m sorry; I want to help-”
“No. You stay out of this – I don’t trust that asshole one bit, something about it feels…strange.”
            “But Zuko-”
“I said no love, be a good girl and listen,” Zuko demanded, cupping my chin tightly and forcing me to look at him. His soft lips barely brushed against mine as I pouted defeatedly, my cheeks glowing at his tone, I’m such a sucker for this man.
There was just something about his overbearing presence that had me yearning for more, and based on the way Zuko’s hand mischievously trailed along my back, he knew just as well. Every faint touch of his seemed to etch itself into my skin, my body craving more. Without much thought, my fingers found it’s way down Zuko’s broad chest, feeling the way it rose with every breath and the muscles that lurked underneath his robes. “Don’t tease babe; I’m not exactly feeling patient today.” Zuko groaned with bated breath.
“Maybe that’s the point…” I kittenishly muttered back. Zuko licked his lips slowly, eyes narrowed, as his hand trailed along my lower back, “Babe-” Zuko warned, but I could hear the hint of neediness lingering as he spoke between bitten lips. Gosh, how much I want him to touch me, do something - anything.
“This is outrageous! How about I talk with the King?” Suki groaned loudly. I jumped.
So caught up with Zuko, I idiotically forgot that the gang was here, right beside us. “The Kyoshi warriors have served him many times; he’ll probably hear me out.” Suki continued.
Zuko grinned, watching the way I flushed realizing how out right needy I was being, letting lust take over for a split moment. His grasp loosened, and I found myself turning on my heel and letting my body rest against his. I hope no one noticed-
“Look at you – I haven’t done a single thing, and you’re all hot and bothered.” Zuko teased lowly into my ear. I didn’t think twice as I anxiously crossed my arms and puffed up, “S-shut up.” I muttered harshly, listening to the gang speak amongst themselves, although nothing stuck with me.
I could hear Zuko chuckle in my ear, the way his chest hummed in enjoyment as his arms snaked around my waist. Every gesture of his had me quivering – no matter how innocent his gesture was. What’s wrong with me? But I snorted to myself; I knew exactly what was wrong with me – I had an agonizing craving for a particular man named Zuko. And every day was just another tease of what could happen. Of what I could experience – and it seems like I’m reaching my breaking point. Oh, the irony - I was supposedly the patient one, the one with the best self-control in the relationship. Ha, self-control my ass.
“That’s not the problem; it’s his brother-in-law,” Sokka moaned, seemingly in response to whatever Suki had said earlier. Aang huffed exasperatingly as he crossed his arms, “I don’t get why Kayto hates the thought of a United Nation – it’s the least we could do to prevent another pointless war – no offence Zuko.” I could feel Zuko shrug from behind me, “None taken.”
Suki sighed, “Sorry guys, I don’t know what I can do to help. The whole voyage here, I was rooting for you.”
“We could get Princess to just flirt with Kayto; he seemed to like you.” Toph blurted without a care in the world.
Within seconds my eyes widen, and I could literally hear and feel Zuko revolt in disgust, “Over my fucking body she will.” Zuko hissed furiously. Toph shrugged her shoulders, “Whatever, from the party, it seemed like he had the hots for her. Let the Princess strut her stuff.”
Toph knew, and I found a cold sweat start, gosh. While I loved Toph’s abilities to Earthbend, sometimes it proved intrusive – could she feel Zuko and me fighting that night? Wait…can she tell that I’m all bothered because of Zuko right now? I could feel my cheeks get all rosy once again as I twiddled with my fingers, I swear she knows more than she lets up.
“I prefer to build the Nation and cause another pointless war than to let him place a single hand on her.” Zuko huffed possessively, the grip around my waist tighten. His fingers dug into my dress, pulling me so close to his chest I could feel Zuko’s heartbeat on my back, “I’m not telling her to sleep with the guy, I’m saying flirt. Some sweet talk, you know- play politics.” I groaned as I pulled at Zuko’s hands, “You’re hurting me~!” I whined from underneath his grasp, “S-sorry love.” Zuko grumbled shyly as he loosened up his grip. I’m not jealous he says  – pft.
“Speaking of the devil…” Suki whispered harshly, facing us with wide eyes.
I would be lying if I said Kayto wasn’t anything but handsome – because he was just that. He could effortlessly be the poster model for the Earth Nation with his glowing tanned skin and emerald eyes. If one didn’t know better, they would easily swoon over him. Kayto had such a way with words, flirting - but no amount of good looks or charming smiles could hide the appalling personality that lurked underneath. He was a playboy, that much I could figure out. The way he coolly flirted with the maids, he could make any woman, or man for that matter, weak in the knees.
A low growl erupted from Zuko’s chest from spotting Kayto waltz out of the room, a flirtatious smile painting his face as his eyes briefly lined up with mine. “Oh, relax, will you – what are you, a lion?” I grumbled while trying to smile back at Kayto politely – it’s all politics after all. I could hear Zuko click his tongue against his teeth and snarl into my ear, “Do I look like a fucking kitten to you?”
“Well if I do recall, you were the one letting me play with your hair all morning.” I smugly retorted. Toph snorted, “She got you there your highness.”
“If you wanna play like that, don’t forget that lions pounce on their prey – devours them whole.” I gasped and keenly bit my lip feeling Zuko’s teeth against my ear. The jolt of pleasure that ran up my spine caught me off guard, I can’t believe he’s seriously doing this right now- “Z-Zuko-” I gasped, and I could feel the growing smirk on his lips, “How about I show you how well I can eat you up.”
“Zu-Zuko. N-not now…” I tried my hardest to whimper out, my hands tightly holding his, fighting back the moan that desperately wanted to bubble out.
“Funny, you seemed quite eager just a few moments ago, babe.”
“I-It’s girls night.” I blubbered, his teasing nibbles along my neck, coaxing me into wanting to forget about girls night altogether and spend the rest of the day with Zuko. But as the words slipped out of my mouth, within a flash, Zuko pulled away – did I say something wrong?
“I swear I’ll lock you all up in jail if you steal wine from the fucking cellar again.” Zuko snickered, doing a complete 180. My eyes widen, and I could feel my wrist being pulled, Suki tugged me away from Zuko, “Sorry, what was that? Take as many bottles as we want? Awe, you’re the best!” Suki giggled.
Within a flash, Toph sprinted away with Suki hauling me along. I looked over my shoulder, Zuko bearing the biggest grin of his face as we dashed. But I could feel my heart flutter realizing what he mouthed to me as I dashed down the corridors, ‘I love you.’
I giggled, time for some sweet-sweet revenge for all of that damn teasing.
“LOVE YOU TOO, ZUZU~!” I shouted.
Zuko’s cheeks flushed red as Sokka and Aang looked at him with bug eyes. Despite the growing distance, I could hear all the commotion Aang and Sokka were causing, “You said it - You finally told her?!”
“You love my innocent little sister!?” Sokka shouted.
I knew Zuko was going to kick my ass tonight when we went to bed, but seeing the way he blushed was totally worth it – I really do love you.
“We have six bottles – isn’t that just a tiny bit, overboard?” I questioned timidly as I watched Suki and Toph carry them tightly to their chests. The grins on their faces told me otherwise, “Overboard? Oh please, wait till you come to the Earth Nation – then we’ll show you a mighty fine time.” Toph snickered. I gulped loudly as I pushed two bottles of wine against my chest, suddenly the thought of visiting them in the Earth Nation seems both enthralling and damaging to my liver.
Maids and guards observed us with faces of delight, watching us carry these bottles of alcohol to the spa area. The sunlight seeped through the windows, a nice change from the terrible rain storms we have gotten over the past days. It would be nice if Zuko and I could go for a nighttime stroll…or maybe go to the hot springs together – to relax…
“What the- what happened?” Toph shouted.
Suki and I stopped dead in our tracks, hearing the absolute terror in Toph’s voice. We sharply turned around to look over at Toph, her mouth almost hit the floor as she clenched at the bottles so tightly, her fingers were turning white, “W-what are you-”
“The Waterfall. I-It’s gone. What happened?”
            Damnit.
Toph’s brows were furrowed together as her feet were firmly planted on the ground, I turned my head to the side, and sure enough – we were right in front of the gardens. “Does this have something to do with your scar - why you lied about it the other day?” Toph groused. Suki turned to face me, her eyes wide, “What? Why would you lie about a scar- the waterfall, why didn’t you or Zuko-”
“We didn’t want to worry you guys. Zuko did an investigation, and it was just an accident.”
“An accident? Bullshit. I’m an Earthbender Yue – I can tell you’re lying.”
“I’m not lying.” I huffed anxiously, and for the first time, I spoke my true feelings revolving that fateful day. “I’m telling you the truth - what I know…but…I don’t believe what Zuko told me. He didn’t seem so sure about it himself. I would’ve annoyed him, but I was too hurt to bother and-”
“Too hurt? What in the world happened!?” Shrieked Suki. I opened my mouth and closed it, great - this was not how I expected girls night to go. “Does Sokka and Aang know? They have to know, why didn’t you guys say something-” Suki cried, I pouted as I anxiously bit my lip. Why did I have to be the person to tell them? Ughhh – my damn luck!
“Let me explain, from the start,” I muttered. Without realizing, I found myself guiding them towards the wreckage.
Zuko didn’t bother tidying up the zone, merely bordering it off from the gardens. It’s not like he had time to fix it, between my party and the Earth King’s arrival, this was the least of his worries. It was eerie, despite the sun beaming radiantly and the blooming flowers surrounding us, seeing the waterfall in nothing but piles of stone with some flowing water felt wrong. Just days ago Kiyi and I were feeding the turtle ducks together, just moments ago I was under those piles of rocks trying to save innocent children.
“Were any of the kids hurt?” Suki questioned, a giant frown on her face as she gazed aimlessly at the debris. The look of pure shock in her eyes as she observed the destruction, I couldn’t blame her one bit. It looked terrible, just a giant pile of mess. I shook my head as I anxiously gripped the bottles tighter to my chest, “N-no but Zuko did an investigation, and the guards said it was nothing more than-”
“A natural erosion of the rocks – leading to a landslide.” Toph finished.
Suki and I sharply turned to her. The whole time Toph was silent, not one snarky or sarcastic remark escaped her. Letting the bottles lay on the grass, she hunched over, her hands firmly placed against the ground. Her fingers dug into the ground, concentrating intensely as if she was feeling or searching for something. “That’s what they wanted to make it seem like – an accident.”
“What do you mean by them, Toph.” Suki interrogated. I could feel my gut drop; she can’t possibly be hinting at what I think she is. “It wasn’t an accident. Someone tried to hurt, or worse, kill you, Yue. Or you were at least a target. It would make the most sense.”
“Toph. That’s a big accusation you’re saying.” Suki spoke - her tone low, trying to be cautious. It was terrifying to see Suki sober and Toph speaking calmly. Kill me? Please be a foolish joke. “I-I, don’t understand.” I whimpered, looking at the rocks, was it true? Did I actually see someone that day at the top of the waterfall? Was it really a person and not just a figure of my imagination. Oh my gosh-
“I can feel it; they built tiny pockets of space in the foundation of the waterfall. Whoever did this, they hired some Earthbenders – skilled ones at that. Anyone could stand at the top of the falls, and with a little kick, cause it to all come crumbling down, destroying almost all evidence with it…” Toph muttered, before standing up straight and wiping her dirty hands against her shirt. “Who else knew?” Toph asked.
“Knew what?” I gasped out. My chest felt tight as if I couldn’t get in enough air into my lungs.
“About you guys feeding the turtle ducks at the waterfall.”
“N-no one. It was an idea Kiyi told me, and I asked Zuko if it was okay, and he said sure, and Lia put the food down for us during my ceremony.” Toph hissed as she stomped her feet against the dirt, “No. That’s not right. Someone else would've had to know. Yue, this was an inside job. Someone in the kingdom is a rat.” I took another deep breath, gazing at the rocks. I could feel the blood rushing to my head as I tried to let their assumptions sink in.
            This was insane.
This can’t be true; I knew a few people were upset by the rumours that I was a Waterbender, but to think they would kill me over it? That’s crazy. “But why. Why target Yue? It hasn’t even been a full month since she’s been living here- the people love her! Did you forget about the articles petitioning for Zuko to marry Yue soon?” Suki argued.
“I don’t know… we’re missing something. But what…” Toph muttered to herself as she moved her feet against the ground. “We need to tell Zuko. We need to increase security-”
“No.” Toph sternly spoke. Suki frowned, “Why not? There may be a killer on the loose, and clearly they have no moral boundaries if they’re willing to kill children.”
“If we tighten security, then they know that we know. We need to act natural. Resume our day as if we discovered nothing. We’ll tell Zuko, but that’s it. From now on, we keep a lookout for anything out of the norm.”
“And the Earth King?” Suki pestered. Toph shrugged, “He’s fine. This is a personal attack. Whoever planned this seems most interested in our Princess…”
“Hey… you okay?” Suki spoke softly, turning to me. It was then I realized I hadn’t uttered a word. I felt cold, my hands shaking. Someone wanted to kill me – how the hell am I supposed to react to that? But I found myself going back to one single thought over and over again - if they were willing to hurt Kiyi or Zuko to get to me…does that mean…
“Toph. Be honest with me.” I spoke quietly.
Toph frowned, waiting for my question, “Am I a danger to Zuko? If I stay, will Zuko get hurt because of me?” I could see Suki look at Toph, worry painting her face, anticipating for the answer. With a giant sigh, Toph crossed her arms, “Zuko is smart and skillful – you’ll be stupid to underestimate him. He’s a king for a reason, and from now on, I advise you stick to him.”
“But is there a chance that he’ll get hurt.” I pressed on. Toph huffed once more as she impatiently tapped her foot, “It doesn’t matter whether or not he may or may not get hurt. Because whether or not he’s willing to risk his life for you isn’t something you can decide for him, it’s his choice – his life. Would you be willing to risk your life for him?”
            “Of course-”
“Then you answered your damn question. You guys love each other, right? That’s what you screamed out to him before we left - right?” I huffed, my fingers digging into the labels wrapped around these bottles, “Yeah…I-I love him.”
“And the moment you screamed that his heart went bonkers. So stop asking stupid questions, that man is crazy about you. We’ll talk to him about this ‘murder on the loose’ stuff tomorrow; we have a girls night to celebrate.”
“You really think we can wait to talk with the boys till tomorrow…?” Suki asked, anxiously looking back and forth between what was left of the waterfall and us. Toph just sighed, leaning over to grab the bottles that she laid on the ground, “We survived this long haven’t we? If whoever really wanted to do something, they would’ve done it already. Clearly, they’re waiting for something, so let’s act natural and just go on with our day. It'd be more obvious if we made a fuss about it.”
Suki sighed, taking in a deep breath before letting her shoulders relax. And just like that, a huge smile painted her face, “Let’s go have some fun.” It was my turn to pout as I sullenly huffed to myself, trying hard to breathe and not let my emotions run rampant. “You expect girls night to resume like normal? As if there isn’t someone trying to kill or hurt me?” I hissed out furiously.
Toph shrugged, walking over to me, and it was then I noticed, one of the bottles was uncorked. “Nope, that’s why we start drinking now. Take a swing Princess, because today is going to be our last before murder-mystery-game-night starts.” I let out a shaky breath; this is absolutely insane. But despite my survival instincts screaming at me to run to Zuko now and hide for my dear life, I found myself dropping my bottles and grabbing Toph’s.
One giant bitter tasting swing and a silent curse, I pushed the bottle back to Toph, “Let’s have a girls night.” I hiccupped, feeling a faint burn run down my throat after chugging a good bit down, certainly not how wine is intended to be drunken may I add. But before Toph could put the cork back into the bottle, Suki quickly reached over, and took a giant swing of her own, “I really needed that.” Suki sighed, and Toph snickered, also stealing a massive swing.
Toph lazily wiped her mouth with her sleeve, before light-heartedly swinging the bottle side to side, “See, one bottle down, five more to go. Easy stuff.”
            “Toph…” I mumbled, “What’s up, Princess?”
“…six bottles doesn’t seem like enough.” Suki and Toph laughed, wrapping a free arm around my waist, squishing me in between them. “You’re safe with us. Zuko will throw a temper tantrum should anything happen to you.”
            “Thanks, guys…”
“That’s what sisters are for.” Suki gushed, and surprisingly enough, Toph grunted in agreeance, “Now let’s start talking about why you and Zuko haven’t done the damn deed yet. What are you guys waiting for? Are you trying to be the next ‘Katara and Aang’ and wait for years?”
Toph groaned loudly, “Don’t get me started; you don’t even want to know what these two nasties were doing earlier.” I blushed furiously while Suki gasped, “This is it! Operation ‘get Princess laid’ is officially in the works!”
            I sighed.
I should’ve left with Zuko when I had the chance.

Glowing
Click here to read the entire fic on AO3
The library felt both cavernous and claustrophobic as Katara thought of the hundreds of pounds of sand above them. It had been lucky that Malina introduced them to Professor Zei, who she had met when they were students at Ba Sing Se University. It had been lucky that Toph was able to feel out the library, despite the sand rendering her truly blind for most of their trip. And it was lucky the weird fox showed up when it did.
But as they started over one crumbling walkway, Katara felt her stomach twist.
The stacks were massive and defied reason as they seemed to hover in empty space. Toph was quiet, only pausing to tap her feet everyone in a while and shake her head. Thuy, having found her group, clustered with the others and whispered among them. Out of all of them, only Mister Whiskers seemed unbothered.
Zuko led the way, holding out a flame.
At an intersection, they stopped at the wide platform and looked around. A breeze picked up and a massive shadow slammed down in front of them. A few of the young ones behind Katara yelped.
A large white face turned to them all and Katara almost lost her breakfast.
“Why have you trespassed in my library?” The titan of an owl asked.
“Wan Shi Tong!” Professor Zei exclaimed, rushing forward. “We’ve come seeking knowledge!”
“The last human I allowed in my library sought knowledge for the purpose of destruction. I will not abide such desecration. Speak your intentions and I will decide if you may enter.” Wan Shi Tong said. Katara’s stomach sank and she grabbed onto Zuko’s arm for support.
“I’m only tagging along since I can’t, you know, read.” Toph spoke up.
Wan Shi Tong tilted his head to a disturbing angle and Katara swallowed a lump in her throat.
“You okay?” Zuko whispered.
“Fine.” Katara hissed.
“We have texts in all forms, including the ones read with your,” Wan Shi Tong lifted his wings and flapped them gently. “Fingers.”
“Oh lit.” Toph said and Thuy groaned. “Then what do you have on metallurgy?”
“Why?” Wan Shi Tong questioned. “I have seen how your kind has weaponized even the meanest of elements in this world.”
“I just like being an asshole.” Toph stated with a shrug. “And I want to know how to make equipment more cold resistant.”
“Aw, Sifu.” Thuy said and Toph waved her away.
“Acceptable.” Wan Shi Tong said. “Now, the rest of you.”
“I am only here to seek as much knowledge as I can.” Professor Zei said.
“A lie.” Wan Shi Tong announced.
“Sorry bucko, but the nerd is telling the truth.” Toph interjected.
“And how do you know that, human?” Wan Shi Tong shot back.
“My bending. I can tell when someone is lying. And how many of those weird foxes you have in here.”
“How many?”
“Fifty-seven.”
“Seven? Ling got out again.” Wan Shi Tong muttered. He then ruffled his feathers and straightened. “Fine, but what of the rest of you?”
“The Avatar and I are looking for information about Energybending.” Katara said.
“The Avatar?” Wan Shi Tong flew past them, an eel of blackness, and coiled around Thuy. Forcing the others back, Wan Shi Tong loomed over her.
“Ah, I see. I am sad to hear of Aang’s passing. I was fond of him.” He announced.
“He did not tell me you were this scary.” Thuy rasped out. Wan Shi Tong’s head bobbled and he laughed.
“My apologies, Avatar.” He said.
“I know the rest of us just came along with Thuy,” Tashi said, grabbing Wan Shi Tong’s attention. “But since this is actually real, I would like to find stuff pre-Avatar Wan.”
“Wan.” Wan Shi Tong muttered.
“I do not need to hear anything further. I will leave you to my attendant, but be aware that I will know what you take. If I think you are attempting to abuse my library, I will sink the whole building with all of you in it.” He said and, before the group’s bewilderment could find a voice, launched himself upward.
“I am done with spirits.” Sokka muttered.
“Alright team, let's go.” Thuy said, trying to sound cheerful.
“I’m going with Toph.” Jae-hwan announced.
“Figures.” Toph said, pushing her student.
“I’d like to go too, if that’s okay.” Aktuk said.
“You’re not trailing after Thuy?” Jae-hwan mocked and Aktuk blushed.
“He’s got the leg you idiot.” Toph said, smacking the back of Jae-hwan’s head. “Of course he’s going with me.”
“If this place really has everything, I’m going for the poetry.” Sokka announced.
“Poetry?” Jae-hwan questioned.
“You know, if you put something other than dirt into that blockhead of yours, you might be a better Bender.” Toph said.
“He’s not a Bender!” Jae-hwan protested.
“And yet he will always kick your ass, dust bunny.” Toph said and then ruffled his hair, grinning.
“I’m not feeling well, so I think I’m going to stay here.” Suki said, sliding down the stone railing and pulling off her backpack.
“Mister Whiskers can stay with you.” Thuy stated.
“Thanks, hun.” Suki said and smiled.
“I’ll stay too.” Tashi spun his closed glider and sat near Suki, laying the apparatus across his lap.
The rest of them split up, following foxes that took them down separate walkways from the platform. Katara and her group were led to a large table to set up a sort of camp. Foxes brought lanterns or else escorted Thuy, Suzu, and Zula off to find books.
From their packs, they pulled out snacks and water, setting into the tomes and scrolls that the fox librarians pointed out for them.
Energybending was a theory Avatar Aang had explored. Airbenders were assumed to be more intune with the energy of the world, but Waterbenders had a stronger connection to spirits. Aang wondered if there was a connecting force after seeing how some Waterbender midwives were able to identify if an unborn child would be a Bender.
That, along with the concept of chi blocking, led him to believe that Bending ability could be locked and unlocked, even in people believed to be non-Benders.
Zuko was hoping to find something that would help him deal with his father. The recent coup attempt was backing him into a corner and neither he nor Katara wanted to see the man executed.
For hours they poured over books, while Katara sucked on various candies to help her nausea. They broke to eat and compare notes, but only Katara and Thuy could even begin to make sense of what was written. The Firebenders had a different connection to their bending.
“Wait, let me see if I understand this.” Thuy said, turning in her seat to face Katara. With a book open on the table, Thuy traced down the page with one finger while her other hand waved in front of Katara’s face.
“If the lines go from…” Thuy murmured, looking at the book for a moment before making the gestures in the air. She moved down Katara’s front and startled at her chest.
“Is that your heartbeat or your bending?” She asked.
“Probably heartbeat.” Katara said with a laugh. “The water chakra is lower down. And the Water Tribe thinks the chi is held in the bladder anyway.”
Thuy lowered her hands toward Katara’s lap and concentrated.
“I think I can feel it, but it’s weird.” Thuy said.
Alarmed, Katara looked back at Zuko for a moment.
“Weird?” She repeated, looking at Thuy, who was frowning at her hands.
“Maybe it’s me, but it feels similar to the energy around your heart.” She said. Then, shaking her head, she sat back. “I must not understand.”
Katara leaned over and looked at the book. Straightening in her seat, Katara made the same gestures over her lower abdomen.
It was a weird feeling and she frowned as well.
“What about me?” Thuy asked.
Katara turned and they face each other. Following the diagrams of the book, Katara scanned over Thuy’s body. There was a strong energy in every major point, but a lot of it was centered at her lower abdomen. She was a native Waterbender afterall.
“Try us.” Suzu offered. Thuy stood and went to her friends while Katara turned and faced Zuko.
With the same scan, Katara could feel the energy in his stomach, right where it was supposed to be. With her bloodbending tied to her waterbending, Katara could feel his pulse and knew the difference. What she had felt inside of herself was, foreign.
“You’re worried.” Zuko stated.
“I just don’t know what I was feeling. I get that I wouldn’t have the same thing as Thuy, but even her’s made sense.” Katara said and rubbed her forehead.
“Suzu and Zula feel really similar.” Thuy stated. “And it confused me for a second too.”
“But I’m-” Katara stopped and the blood drained from her face. Her voice lowered to a whisper. “Not two people.”
“What?” Zuko asked, his voice strained.
“I think I’m pregnant.” Katara said and met his eye.
Zuko blinked and then started laughing. He grabbed her, hugging her as they sat and Katara felt tears in her eyes.
“Pregnant?” Thuy shrieked.
“Baby?” Suzu asked as she inhaled a sharp breath.
“So is that why you and Suki have been trying not to puke up your guts all week?” Zula asked.
Suzu whirled on her sister.
“BABIES?” She demanded.
“Katara, this explains so much.” Zuko said, sitting back and pushing her hair back from her face.
“Like what?” She asked.
“Why you’ve been glowing.” He said.
“Hush.” Katara sniffed and wiped her running nose on a napkin. “Look, now that I know it’s not the flu, we really need to focus on this.”
“I can literally not focus on anything else but the fact that you are PREGNANT.” Thuy said.
“Blazes.” Katara groaned, laying her head on the table. With a smile, she placed a hand on her stomach.
Behind her, Thuy and Suzu started hopping around in celebration while Zuko rubbed circles on her back.
“Can you tell if it’s a boy or girl?” Suzu gasped.
“Why would you seriously ask that question of me?” Thuy asked. “Me?”
“Maybe it’s like chi, Thuy, and not parts. Did you ever think of that? Huh?” Suzu retorted.
“You both are giving me a headache.” Zula stated.
“I love you.” Zuko whispered.
Katara sat up and he kissed her quickly.
“Can we figure out how to deal with your dad now?” She asked.
“We might not need to. I’m pretty sure when he finds out he’s going to be a grandfather, he’ll have a heart attack.” Zuko said.
Katara snorted.
“Still.” She said.
“Fine. I can’t deny you anything now.”
“Like you could before?”
Zuko smiled and kissed her again.

Prompt Generator Series 01
I’m trying something new in order to practice my writing. I’ve found a prompt generator and I’m going to write things for them. They will probably not be complete pieces like “one-shots” and I may never give them a conclusion, but I hope you enjoy them!
Prompt: Having recently broken up, the main character is forced into an adventure they do not want when whilst drunk, another character does something unexpected at a party.
In the movies, when a couple breaks up, the woman’s friends bring wine and ice cream. They watch a movie or trash-talk the ex while getting drunk on sugar and whatever cheap bottle one of them managed to grab at the grocery store.
That was not how Toph Beifong did things.
When Katara sent out the text, Suki had been the one to suggest getting together, but Toph was the one that announced they would be going out. And Katara had enjoyed the getting ready part; trying on outfits she hadn’t worn in weeks because she and Aang hadn’t gone out, getting into Suki’s makeup, and gushing to each other about how they felt.
Actually going out was a different story.
As they were in the taxi, Katara felt like her dress was too short, her face too covered, and her body too stiff under it all. Still, she didn’t want to admit it, knowing that really, she just felt too exposed without her relationship cloaking her.
Maybe that’s why, when Toph bought shots, she didn’t decline. Or why she continued drinking, even after the throb of the music started to be more of a feeling than a sound.
When Katara started to feel hot and crowded, Toph finally relented. Being a Beifong, Toph had access to the exclusive rooftop and she led Katara and Suki upstairs. The music was more subdued and the conversation was quieter. Out in the open, the breeze brushed against her sweat stained skin, making her shiver.
“I’m going to get some water.” Katara announced as Toph and Suki found a table.
“Could you grab me a tiger claw?” Toph asked and Katara nodded as she walked to the bar.
There were a lot less people there, but the bartender was off talking to a group of young women who were clearly making a list of drinks. Leaning against the bar, Katara closed her eyes as another breeze touched the back of her neck.
“Hey, can I buy you a drink?”
Katara opened her eyes and turned to see the man now standing on her left.
He was handsome. Enough so that Katara stood, feeling embarrassed.
“Oh, no, I’m just getting water.” She said. The man smiled and angled himself more toward her. Seeing a scar on his left eye, she tilted her head and it fell heavily toward her shoulder.
“That must’ve hurt.” Katara stated and the man chuckled.
“It did.” He replied and she winced.
“Shit. Sorry. That was rude.”
The man laughed and shook his head.
“I’m used to being around rude women.” He said.
“Hey.” Katara scowled. “I’m not rude all the time. I’m just drunk.”
Remembering, quite suddenly, all of the horror stories of meeting men at bars, Katara set her shoulders and continued. “I’m here with my friends.”
“And I’m here with mine.” The man said. “My name is Zuko.”
He held out his hand and Katara took it, shaking it slowly.
“I’m Katara.”
“You’re a Waterbender right?”
“How did you know?” Katara asked with breathy curiosity.
“Your eyes.” Zuko answered and Katara blushed.
“Why don’t you just get your own water then?” He questioned.
“That’s rude.” Katara said quickly.
“But you’re rude now.” He countered.
Katara placed her hands flat on the bar.
“I am rude now.” She whispered. Then she looked down at the bartender and frowned.
“I don’t have any glasses.” Katara stated.
“Here.” Zuko said, making her turn back just in time to see him leap over the bar.
“You can’t do that!” Katara whispered sharply. Zuko smiled before grabbing two glasses.
“I am also rude now.” He replied and jumped back over. “See? He didn’t even notice.”
Pushing the glasses toward her, Zuko winked. “Your turn.”
Katara took a step back from the bar and took in a deep breath. Moving her arms, she let the breath out slowly and pulled on the water dispenser. The hose came free of its holder and Katara coaxed the water out of it. As she poured, the bartender finally noticed what was going on.
“Hey!” He yelled, startling Katara. A burst of water exploded out of the hose, damaging the dispenser and spraying her and Zuko with water. The bartender ran down to wrestle with the hose while Katara attempted to stop the spray of water.
When the bartender got the dispenser under control, Katara took a glass of water and darted back to her table, leaving Zuko behind.
Dripping wet and mortified, Katara tucked herself behind Suki and Toph.
“We need to go.” She said in a low voice.
“What did you do?” Toph hissed while Suki was choking on her laughter.
“She just left him standing there!” Suki gargled out and Katara brushed the water off of her, tossing it over the railing of the balcony.
“We really need to go!” Katara repeated.
“Did you even get my drink?” Toph asked.
“She was too busy being a coward.” Zuko interjected and Katara yelped as she tried to duck under the table.
Zuko leaned down and looked at her.
“I’ve paid for the damages but, do you think you could dry my clothes Ms. Waterbender?” He asked.
Standing up, Katara moved around the table and sheepishly hung her head as she pulled the water from Zuko’s clothes.
“Can you go get my drink now?” Toph asked as Katara tossed the water away.
“I don’t want to go back there.” She said.
“I’d be happy to.” Zuko offered. “If you three would consider joining me and my friends.”
“Are your friends hot?” Toph asked.
“You’re blind.” Katara said.
“I still have a type, Katara.” Toph retorted.
“I’m spoken for.” Suki said.
“That’s fine, my friends are more looking to prove a point than actually try to pick someone up.” Zuko said and then turned to Toph. “And I don’t know what your type is, but I would argue that my friends are hot.”
Toph stood and put her foot down, hard, making Zuko jump back a bit.
“Well, you’re not too bad. I think they’ll be fine.” Toph said. “Get me a tiger claw and we’ll go over.”
“Deal.” Zuko said and walked off.
Katara immediately turned on Toph.
“We can’t just go over there with him.” She stated.
“Why not?” Toph asked.
“Because,” Katara stopped, unable to put her feelings into words.
“Exactly. I’m sure they’re fine.” Toph said.
“And if they’re not, we leave.” Suki added.
“Fine.” Katara muttered and picked up her water glass. It didn’t mean she had to like it.
“Ruon-Jian, Chan, this is Katara, Suki, and Toph.” Zuko said as he led them over to his table. The two other men held up their hands in greeting.
Toph made as if she had tripped and put a heavy foot down, grabbing onto Suki to steady herself. Her sly grin right before she straightened made Katara want to roll her eyes.
“I’m sorry, I’m blind and these loose floorboards are just terrible.” Toph said with fake simpering femininity dripping off her words. Chan brightened at her tone and got up, offering his hand.
“Let me help you.” He offered and Katara finally did roll her eyes.
As Ruon-Jian also got up, Suki held up her hands.
“I am very happily dating this one’s brother,” Suki said, turning her hands into finger guns and pointing them at Katara. “Just to make sure we’re clear.”
Ruon-Jian smiled and simply gestured with open hands. “I’d just be glad to talk to someone other than these two.”
Zuko ordered another round of drinks for everyone and Katara started to relax a bit more. The men were all from the Fire Nation and had travelled into Republic City for some reason that she missed. As they got more companionable, however, Toph and Chan quickly excused themselves. Claiming to only be walking Toph down to get a taxi, Chan did not return.
Another round of drinks and they started to talk about where they came from. Suki pulled out her Kyoshi accent and Katara talked about the snow village she had grown up in. Then Suki called it a night, pointedly asking Katara if she was leaving.
Except somehow, Katara ended up pressed against Zuko’s side, his arm over her shoulders.
She remembered it had started because she was cold, in her short dress and out on the roof, and Zuko told her he was a Firebender. He was naturally warm, and Katara decided to test his claim. Leaning against him, she found that he was warm, and now she didn’t want to move.
“I’m okay.” Katara said happily.
“Are you sure?” Suki asked firmly. Ruon-Jian touched Suki’s arm and smiled.
“I’ll make sure she gets into a taxi if he doesn’t.” He said and Suki sighed.
“Text me as soon as you get home or I’m telling Sokka.” She said, pointing her finger in Katara’s face.
Katara grasped her finger and shook it up and down.
“Yes ma’am.” She said.
Suki ruffled her hair as she passed.
“Have fun.” She said.
Zuko got more drinks, but handed Katara a water, much to her disappointment. The conversation started to wind down and Ruon-Jian mentioned something about ordering pizza. Both he and Zuko got up from the table, leaving Katara swaddled in Zuko’s coat.
It smelled good, like his cologne but also like fabric softener.
“It’s last call, miss.” A woman’s voice said from behind Katara. “Can I get you anything else?”
Katara blinked slowly.
“Actually,” She said and smiled. “Yes.”
The next morning, Katara woke up with cotton residue in her mouth.
Her head pounding, she sat up in the dull light and rubbed her eyes.
This was not her room. Her room was much smaller and had clothes still on the floor from getting ready. Her bed was also much smaller and the sheets were not this bright. Hers were the flannel ones with snowmen on them because she hadn’t packed away her winter linens yet.
Panicking, Katara looked around the room to try and get her bearings. She found on the nightstand next to her a nice alarm clock, a cup of water, and a bottle of headache medicine. Taking two pills and chugging the water, Katara then shifted under the comforter.
She was still in her dress from last night.
Slowly slipping out of the bed, Katara avoided looking around too much, suddenly concerned with snooping.
Opening the door to the bedroom, Katara walked out into a small hallway. She passed another open door and peered in, seeing a neat little office setup. Then she came to the top of a staircase and peered down to where it opened up. She could see an open living room, but not much else.
The light was brighter down there, as the bedroom was equipped with blackout curtains for some reason. As she stepped quietly down the stairs, Katara held a gasp as she found a body sleeping on the couch. Zuko sprawled uncomfortably along its length, and Katara immediately turned her head and went hunting for her purse.
Was it the walk of shame if she hadn’t slept with him? She assumed she hadn’t slept with him, but had they done something?
Spotting her purse on a table next to the front door, with her shoes standing neatly on the floor underneath, Katara stepped quickly toward them. But as she rummaged through her purse looking for her phone, she swore under her breath when she realized it was gone.
“I’s plugged in.” Zuko slurred from the couch. Katara turned and saw one of his arms thrown over his face, the other one extended with his hand waving in the air toward his TV.
“Your battery was dying.” He added and rolled over to put his face into the cushions.
“Are you okay?” Katara asked as she walked over.
“Yuh. ‘m fine.” His voice was muffled by the couch. “I’m tired.”
“Did we…?” Katara trailed off and she could see his body stiffen. Zuko then turned, squinting up at her in the light.
“No.” He said. “But you might want to call your friend. Like now.”
Her eyes widening, Katara froze.
“Why?” She asked.
“You kinda told her that you were coming back to my place to, well,” Zuko’s face reddened and Katara blushed at the inference. “I just think you should call her to let her know you’re okay.”
Katara turned toward the TV and found her phone sitting on the stand next to a game controller. Unplugging the cable, she winced at the number of texts and missed calls.
Most of which from her brother.
“Hey.” Katara said as she stood, tapping her phone in her hand and keeping her back to Zuko.
“Yeah?” He asked.
“Do you want to get breakfast?” She asked. As she waited for an answer, she squeezed her phone in her hands and held her breath.
“Is that what you want?” Zuko questioned.
Katara turned to him and smiled weakly.
“I know what I want. But,” Katara looked down at her phone. “I’m not rude now.”
“So what does that mean?”
Her nerves now emboldening her, Katara met his gaze and her smile changed into a smirk.
“It means the polite thing is to get food first.” She said.
Zuko laughed and ran a hand through his hair. “You don’t even know me.”
“That’s the point of a date.” Katara replied.
Zuko stopped, his hand still in his hair, his face blank. Then a smile spread slowly over his face.
“Fine. But what are you going to wear?” He asked.
