Hey, I started reading Robin son of Batman because of your recommendation (I literally have a print of your post on my phone to not forget lol). Honestly? One of the best things I ever read!!!

Thank you for opening my eyes! Damian has been one of my favorite characters for over a year, but I didn't read/watch much of him because of school, life (and probably an executive dysfunction in the mix).

Maya is incredible. I loved her.

I haven't finished all the issues yet, but do you have any other recommendations?

The older I get the more I think we should stop selling the idea of like. There being an “easy” version of something.

Like ok I’ve always wanted to be able to do something musical but I’ve also always been pretty tuneless. Like “kid in primary school who couldn’t clap along with the beat in music class and got told to stop when singing” tuneless.

So last year I finally drummed up the courage to at least TRY. After a bit of research on “easiest instrument for stupid idiot babies” I bought a ukulele. Amid that, I read plenty of promises of “wooo you can learn to play a great song in A SINGLE WEEK on ukulele!”.

And…it was still hard! I couldn’t strum nicely or figure out how to switch between chords, I couldn’t keep a beat, a lot of the music terminology I saw completely confused me. And it made me feel SO stupid and useless like. This instrument they give literal tiny children because it’s so simple and easy and barely an instrument at all and I couldn’t get it.

I’ve been at it pretty consistently for a year and a half or so, and honestly I’m still not good! Id be pretty mortified to play in front of anyone that isn’t literally being paid to teach me lmao.

But I’ve gotten much better! I can strum much more nicely and play a couple songs, I’ve learned to chuck and fingerpick. And now I can pick out the beat in music much better, I understand some basic music theory. I have learned this stuff, even though I found it super hard and unintuitive!

And like. Man looking around online I feel like I’ve seen a lot of people who picked up an uke for similar reasons who gave up fast because it was sold to them as easy, and they felt like “well if I can’t get THIS then I’m hopeless”. But then there is no easy way to learn a completely new skill and get actually good at it, it still takes work and frustration and a lot of vulnerability.

And I think I see this with stuff like. Oh learn to code the easy way, learn to draw the easy way, learn Japanese the easy way, etc etc. and it’s like man. Are we better off just admitting that like. Most things for most people are hard, but you can still do it anyway? Like you can still do it! You can still learn and get better at it! It’s fine if something is hard and takes a long time! It really is!

The past few years I've been mourning the loss of old school minecraft minigame servers. I remember playing on the Hive and Mineplex and a bunch of other servers for hours because there were so many silly unique games to play.

But in the past few years I've found that there's really not much of that anymore. The Hive shut down and is only on Bedrock now (no hate to Bedrock but I personally just prefer Java and the Bedrock hive just looks like there's a different vibe), Mineplex shut down, and I feel like the minigame market is just dominated by Hypixel. I love hypixel, I grew up on it just like the other servers I mentioned, but let's all be honest here, it's really not as fun when there's only one place to go. (Also I'm super petty because their version of hide and seek is atrociously boring and I miss the Hive's hide and seek. Or even Mineplex's version with the mobs. This is the case with a lot of other gamemodes where I feel other servers did it better unfortunately.)

I know minigames aren't in the spotlight as much anymore. With the uptick of SMP content, that seems to have taken the forefront of the server market from what I've seen. And no hate to SMPs either, I love that kind of stuff, but I really do miss the variety of minigames.

So I really have to ask here, does anyone know any minigame servers other than Hypixel for java minecraft? Stuff that's not painfully competitive (Another of my issues with hypixel), maybe some classic survival games? Hide and seek obv, party style games, TTT, basically anything with the vibe of mid 2010s minigame servers because I've been looking for ages and for the life of me I can't seem to find anything and I'm desperate.

every time someone asks me how i do this shit i have to regrettably inform them that the real genuine answer is that i am fucking insane. my 2 passions in life are writing and video games and the place where the 2 converge fascinates me to no end and i am that special kind of crazy that is capable of latching onto something and not thinking about anything else for 10 years. so. the only thing i have cared about deeply for the last several years of my life has been the way video games are written and constructed. and zelda is one of the most interestingly constructed franchises i have found to date. these games are just like. the absolute perfect story for my brain to work with and i truly do not know who i would be without them. and i am genuinely incredibly grateful that ive been able to build a platform where people like. CARE about what i have to say and take the time to ask me to think about the games because like. i would be doing it ANYWAY but knowing that there are people who actually read my analysis and appreciate the amount of thought i put into this stuff makes me really happy lol

#i sincerely think video games are an art form and that so many stories benefit from being told interactively via video games #and i'm especially fascinated with the way loz chooses to tell its stories because the games are almost always designed so that the player #actively makes every decision in the storyline even though every game only has one preset ending. that's SO COOL. #ive found myself frustrated recently by rpgs that are super cutscene heavy and i was struggling to articulate why until i went back and #looked critically at the way zelda games are designed and i realized that there isn't a single cutscene in loz that openly takes away the #player's autonomy. cutscenes are almost always reserved for dialog or the beginnings of fight scenes but link almost never makes choices #without the player's input and that's a huge part of what keeps the games engaging! YOU are link. he's not a vessel you occasionally #control. he is you. his decisions are always yours. #and that's generally easier to do with a less complex storyline but the way botw kept that autonomy despite its complex story is SO clever #by making the cinematic cutscenes MEMORIES there's never any percieved loss of autonomy because the player understands that this is #something that has already happened so obviously there's no way they can alter link's choices. that's SO SMART #ANYWAY. i didn't mean for this to be a tag essay about video game mechanics sorry but tldr i am so so so passionate about this LOL #if you cant tell. very few people irl will listen to me talk for this long. this is why i love tumblr #asks
