Bouncing off the Grey Ghost discourse...what are your thoughts on Luke rigging up a harness (not even a proper saddle, more like a fisherman's rig) out of weathered, soft-but-sturdy ship rope for his boy? Assuming they meet during the healing voyage it's what they'd have on hand. It would also be less likely to bother Ghost, since the materials are familiar, and it would be easy to slip on and off since he still spends most of the time roaming free. Luke continues the practice even after they return to Westeros. It gives his family hives, but Luke has learned enough rope-work to keep things (relatively) safe. And there's something undeniably striking about the Lord of the Tides rocking up on his half-wild sea dragon with only a bit of rope and webbing keeping him in place.

(I'd be tempted to lobby for no saddle, like with Cannibal, but awhile back I saw someone headcanon Grey Ghost as being long and smooth[er], more like an Eastern dragon, and now it's stuck in my brain. And if that's the case Luke will need something to keep him from taking Skydive Trip #2.)

I love it! It would work so well with the theme of the story, and of Lucerys and Grey Ghost's natures / history.

Lucerys weaving and knotting a rope-saddle / harness thing together that he can hang onto while riding Grey Ghost is beautiful. He'd use traditional knots, but he'd also sneak in Targaryen / Velaryon specific braids - like the ones they do for their hair.

It'd be such an understated piece of art, created with such love, and would make such a statement.

I so love the headcanon that Grey Ghost is smooth as well! Fits wonderfully with what we know of him and his lifestyle.
