Thinking of how Legolas began to feel the call of the sea, irresistible and overwhelming, during the quest and yet waited until everyone in the fellowship died before leaving. Except Gimli of course, who he took with him.

He waited decades out of love and friendship.

Thinking about Merry and Pippin buried next to Aragorn.

Thinking about Eomer who called for Merry at the end of his life, to see him one more time before he passed away.

Thinking about Sam who, after Rosie passed away, left Middle Earth to see Frodo one more time before his own death.

Thinking about Legolas and Aragorn singing for Boromir, Merry and Pippin who owe their lives to him praising his deeds and bravery.

Thinking about Gimli, who walked the Path of the Dead out of love of Aragorn and visited Fangorn forest out of love of Legolas.

Thinking about Gandalf, who feels responsible for the heavy burden he placed on Bilbo and Frodo, and who took them with him to Aman, traveling with them one last time to bring them somewhere where they will finally know peace.

The love i have for them.

I do genuinely believe that the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (and arguably the Zelda franchise as a whole, though i myself have played literally none of these games) is closer to fitting the description of ‘Tolkien-esque Fantasy’ than most other movies/shows/games/books etc that claim that label

Like, compare this post by tumblr user wufflesvetinari, which makes an important point about Tolkien’s worldbuilding, and also lives in my head rent free:

and then these quotes from Jacob Geller’s “Every Zelda is the Darkest Zelda”

and his conclusions about the messages in Zelda games are thematically very similar to the through-lines about friendship and love in LOTR, and what a lot of authors miss about what makes a fantasy story personal and memorable:

“A world without joy and humor isn’t a compelling world to fight for” is exactly why there are so many pieces of fantasy media out there that just feel like carbon copies of each other (i’ve seen many posts that explain this better than I can though I can’t find any specific ones at the moment, just know that I didn’t invent this thesis). You’ve got the cool swords, you’ve got the wizards and the spells and the battles, but first and foremost you need the LOVE.

Every now and then I get asked about ships, and I usually avoid the question both because I think it's obvious what will win and because "ship wars" just aren't fun. But, fine. Concept: Fire Lords traditionally dress like the stages of the sun to match their reign.

When Zuko is first crowned, he dresses in the colours of dawn. Bright yellows and pinks and even purples. He starts to wear more traditional crimson-and-gold robes after a few years, the colours of midday when Agni is at his strongest. And towards the end of his reign, when he's getting ready to pass the crown onto Izumi, he starts dressing like the setting sun.

Hang on

Humans and other "good" species (dwarves, elves, halflings, etc) are usually diurnal- we're active during the day.

As such, we associate the light with "goodness", and thus refer to good things with terminology referencing light, the sun, and so forth.

Orcs, goblins, trolls, etc follow "dark lords" and "dark religions", they live in "dark kingdoms" and join "the forces of darkness".

They're also usually nocturnal.

I'm starting to see where the cultural confusion may have come from here.
