#it’s in our budget
putting my prediction on record now that the coming decade is going to see the rise of viral-marketed fancy at-home water filtration systems, driving and driven by a drastic reduction in the quality of U.S. tap water (given that we are in a 'replacement era' where our current infrastructure is reaching the end of its lifespan--but isn't being replaced). also guessing that by the 2030s access to drinkable tap water will be a mainstream class issue, with low-income & unstably housed people increasingly forced to rely on expensive bottled water when they can't afford the up-front cost of at-home filtration--and with this being portrayed in media as a "moral failing" and short-sighted "choice," rather than a basic failure of our political & economic systems. really hope i'm just being alarmist, but plenty of this already happens in other countries, and the U.S. is in a state of decline, so. here's praying this post ages into irrelevance. timestamped April 2023
#apollo don't fucking touch this one#serious post#not a shitpost#hope i forget about this post and have no reason to ever look back on it one day#fyi i'm aware that access to potable water is already a major issue in parts of the U.S. yes i know flint michigan exists#i'm saying that this issue is going to GROW unless local & federal governments work together to fix it.#so it's a matter of if we trust them to fix it. And well--do you?#what are the chances the government just denies there's a problem until the water actually turns brown#at which point it's already been common knowledge for years and people have just become resigned and that's our new normal#i'm mean come on. how many of us already believe that we're being exposed to dangerous pollutants we don't know about and can't avoid#like that's pretty much just part of being a modern consumer. accepting that companies will happily endanger your life for a few pennies#and the most you'll get is like a $50 gift card as part of a class action rebate 20 years down the line#probably the history books will look back on Flint as a warning and a harbinger that went ignored#luxury condos will advertise their built-in top-of-the-line filtration systems--live here and you can drink water straight from your tap!#watch the elite professional class putting $700 dyson water filtration systems on their wedding registry#while the rest of us figure out how to fit water delivery into our grocery budget while putting 90% of our paycheck towards rent#also eggs are $15

This is sad but unfortunately I think this is just going to be the norm for the next few years as streaming services die a slow death.
HBO Max should in theory be able to make money from a show that was at one point the top new series in the US. At the time, David Jenkins said "This is what happens when a major media company invests in inclusive mainstream stories" (agree!) but unfortunately that major media company, like all streaming services, has a terrible business model that can't support that investment.
This is an interesting article about how streaming services are losing money and scrambling to make it back by trying to convince people to buy cheaper, ad-supported options or bundling with other streaming services. Unfortunately for them, I think that's like... all of the options? At some point they're just going to continue to lose money. Making shows is expensive and very few consumers are willing to pay more when they could just cancel and use a cheaper service (or, you know. 🏴‍☠️)
This is also a good article that was written after Shadow and Bone was cancelled by Netflix about whether it could be saved:
"The problem is that while saving shows used to be plausible, at times, the cost of Shadow and Bone combined with the fact that streaming services are really, really starting to cut back on spending means that this would be an extremely tough sell. WB Discovery’s Max is being lambasted for killing finished projects for tax breaks to chip into its massive debt. Disney Plus has done the same thing and has said they will cut back on things like expensive Marvel shows. Amazon Prime is mired in expensive creator deals going nowhere and throwing insane amounts of money at projects they are realizing are not panning out. Paramount Plus losing $500 million a year. NBC’s Peacock is losing $650 million a quarter."
TLDR; Streaming services have reached such a dire point financially that they have to cancel some of their most popular content (Marvel shows on Disney+???? These have seemingly been very successful; it's wild to read that they're "cutting back") in the desperate hope that a new season of something that's cheaper to make will get more attention.
What I gathered from these articles is that steaming services are dying a slow death and sadly, a lot of good shows are going to go with them.

"It creates a distinct visual motif not found in other romances that captures the connection between the two characters while feeling distinctly not of this world."
"We wanted this to feel like Gale and their partner were really merging into one, new, perfectly harmonious being."

I’m fucking livid about this — 40% budget cut?? FORTY FUCKING PERCENT??? For one of their best-performing shows of 2022???? 🤬🤬🤬
Tumblr media
[image text: screenshot of a tweet by meowzawowza_: “OOF, I will never forgive HBO for how dirty they did OFMD. A 40% budget cut is ROUGH. It sounds like they’re still trying to figure out the budget for S3 and that might be contributing to the renewal holdup. S2 was by all means a success, though (see comments)”
Image in tweet is screenshot of a Wall Street Journal article: “Jenkins said he had slashed the budget for season 2 by 40%. Much of that cost cutting was achieved by moving the production from Los Angeles to New Zealand, where it benefited from tax credits and other savings, the producer said.
Though he declined to go into specifics about the show’s price tag, Jenkins said the revised and “more fiscally responsible” budget for the show put “Our Flag Means Death” in line with what a half-hour comedy should cost.
“The first season of the show was made in a different era from the second season,” Jenkins said, “and if there’s a third season of the show, it will be made in a still different era.”
“We’re all just trying to figure out how to make an over-produced pirate comedy an actual viable commercial enterprise.””]

Something caught my eye in one of the interviews Taika did for the Next Goal Wins press tour:
Tumblr media
"a likely third season of Our Flag Means Death"?! (source)
They probably don't actually know anything but it's interesting that the view is that OFMD will probably be renewed.

If a reversal doesn't happen, I hope far superior networks fight it out for Season 3 and Max is left in the dust 💅🏽✨

Hey tumblr artists, my boo @slugdge-boy and I are looking to commission some art for our wedding invitation! FOR REAL ASS MONEY! Since he's an Aussie and I'm an American, we thought it would be cute to have a Beatrix Potter-y possum and opossum kissing (and some flowers around them).
Anyone know a good artist we could commission for this?
Let me be clear, even though we are looking for cute animals in waistcoats, we are NOT looking for furry art. Much love to our furry comrades, but that's not the vibe we want on our wedding invites.

This past winter I had the Absolutely Pleasure of licensing Edgar Allan Poe's Murder Mystery Invite-Only Casual Dinner Party/Gala for Friends Potluck from Shipwrecked Comedy to perform as a play! It was my directorial debut, and I played Lenore. It was a dream show for me to do ever since I found out you could do it as a play and I wanted to post pics because it turned out SO WELL and was also SO MUCH FUN. So here's part one of some of my favorite photos

Watch Nimona, guys.
Watch Nimona and then go buy the comic and also read Nimona, cause as nicely streamlined as the movie is they did change the style quite drastically (proportions and stuff, I’m not on abt the 3D-ness or the adjustments to make characters visually fit their cast better) and Nate’s original art is GOOD, and they left out some things I really liked in the comic (where was big buff guy nimona you monsters ToT) and comic has slower pacing that lets you have some more time w the characters, yada yada
NIMONA GOOD, CONSUME NIMONA IN ALL ITS MEDIA FORMATS

the red suit is so important to me. SO IMPORTANT! as someone who loves stede's silly little outfits rather violently, i was worried this season there'd be this undercurrent of "well he's a Pirate (aka man) now and Men Don't Wear Fine Things" and like. it's ofmd. of course! they'd never actually do that to us, but i was still Worried. but no. NO! he still loves the frippery. he just couldn't buy the silly little outfits, because he's committed to his new life. but he CAN loot it! that's a spoil of piracy! he still loves being fancy he still loves being femme aghhhh please please manifesting some silly little outfits in season 3 🙏🙏🙏

I love when seven of nine fucks up social interactions. I love when she does something weird or off-putting or talks too precisely about something unpleasant. I love that she observes tom and b'elanna like lab mice in order to understand how to touch someone with loving intent. I love that she is sharp and disrespectful to janeway when she is passionate about something and can't contain herself like the real officers. I love that she's best friends with the only child on voyager and she is allowed to be curious and indulgent with her and her alone, a child the same age she was when her personhood was taken away. I love that she's shy about singing. I love that she desires perfection, an unattainable and impossible dream.
I wish she'd been represented as a cybernetic cobbled-together scarred creature that has to integrate with a ship that is also held together by scar tissue and hard work. that her healing was shown on her body and her mind, and that it was hideous and terrible and amazing.
