#it’s just a personal rant about fandom and shipping in general

Decided I'll just block people I see tag their art with "not ship art" "don't tag as ship" and the like.
It's not that I care whether it's ship art, or whether the artist intends it platonically or romantically.
It's that it shows a deep, fundamental misunderstanding of how art works. Art is not meant to be interpreted to the exact dictation of the artist. Art is meant to evoke thoughts and feelings *beyond* what the artist intends.
The audience, viewing, completes the experience by supplying interpretations based on their own unique experiences.
If someone doesn't get that, then they're too mentally shallow for me to waste time on their art. Why would I? There's nothing for me in it--I'm not permitted to have my own thoughts or feelings about the art after all.
Viewing art as complete, immutable product that the audience exists only to "consume" without thinking is the mentality that enables the hideous conversion of "artist" to "content creator".
Besides, the artist has admitted they can't clearly communicate ideas or scenes, since they feel the need to clarify something that should be obvious 99.9% of the time.

Alright yeah fuck it. If you dont have characters that will be beloved by the people who read it then the stories dont last long in a fandom or sometimes even have an impact on people. Fuck the premise fuck the storyline fuck your worldbuilding becuase Ive seen so many, MANY, stories that are great have no one else to talk about simply because the characters were either too little screentime or none at all to be explored.
And now more than ever more people will define their liking of a story to whenever or not the characters are solid on their own instead of everything else. Its why much of the retellings or the same genre tropes are played out over and over again instead of new things compromising around the same idea.
And its not bad, but its also dumb for someone to go ahead and call another work of art, of whatever kind but im mostly talking about stories here, as a 'lesser work' simply because theres no characters that fit into neat molds or are hot and you can quickly get attached to, completely ignoring everything else about what it is and just deciding everyone who likes it has horrible tastes.
#rant#another personal rant oh boi#but honestly ive been looking at this obbession with fandoms lately. and even im the culprit of it.#where now a story is less defined by its content and instead defined by tropes#and its most consistent on characters as if you have to fit all of them into molds and let your characters be the best versions ever becaus#it will attract more people to come over and ship your works or have enough attraction to these characters that will make the readers buy#more of their content. merch. whatever#yeah specially in anime#and so specifically in isekai to the point where the character only needs to be physiscally attractive---#but im getting out of the point#the thing is that so much art in general has been constantly linked to having this parasocial relationships with the ones who interact with#it that to some extent its fine but to the worst its litterally chaining people to spend away their lives and profits for something thats#just art.#i really dont know how to explain this to you without going over the basics of blah blah capitalism and the entretainment industry and#people linking their traumas and using parasocial relationships as coping mechanisms for their miserable lives and thats why so many#character driven stories sell so well nowadays.#without so so fucking much needed to be told but I just think it needs to be talked about at some point.#and to be clear again im also one of the people who IS stuck with those parasocial relationships#but ive seen worse and im genuenlly scare of what that could possibly meant for the future

people say misogyny has improved in the rpc and at large i would say sure but my god... the way some of y’all talk about your “best boy’s” canon female love interests just oozes hatred. you don’t keep that energy when the tables are turned and your male fave is actually the one acting up in the relationship. i think it’s totally fine to dislike a canon ship and choose to disregard it in your portrayal because you don’t think it serves the way you want to write your muse. although, when that choice is based on the fact that you are painting a woman as “abusive” when she maybe is, at best,  a little mean to the man in question you gotta step back and think about why you are interpreting her that way. also funny that two men can banter and you think that is cute and flirty but god forbid a woman get a bit quippy, now she is a villain!

The whole fun thing about the double standards of sexism is how it really pervades fandom and demonizes both male and female characters really fucking efficiently so everyone's fine until they say or do something that makes them "unforgivably bad" to someone, but you look at characters of the opposite gender who do the same exact things with either the same or less reasons and the same person will be totally fine with them, and also insist they're not being sexist.
#not important#chaotic rants#men are great! until they're dealt a shit hand and cope “wrong” so they get no sympathy#women are great! they're also pure uwu children that need to be coddled#also all their crimes are forgivable and less than a man's (who will be considered largely irredeemable for the same crimes)#unless those crimes are related to a straight romance in which case the woman will be the worst irredeemable bitch in existence#women need to be more like men and men need to be more like women#(this is not about fun gender fuckery unfortunately this is about a trend i've noticed in fandom)#(where either the female character is coddled and reduced to an innocent bean)#(OR she's given lots of scars and is a “cool badass” traditionally masculine character)#(men are also more likely to be forgiven if they're “a twink” or otherwise ~fem enough~)#if you give someone a m/m and f/f ship to judge then#even if those ships are borderline identical the person will say the side they aren't into is “bad” (usually not so politely)#also you're not allowed to give anyone a m/f ship EVER those are INHERENTLY TOXIC AND ABUSIVE#(an actual take i've actually seen people have non-ironically)#people get so fucking needlessly heated about shipping and it's so stupid#(i get heated about shipping but it's about how actual people actually treat each other not about the ships)#(bc i generally just kind of ship everything)#anyways i dont hate any of these character types on their own#what i do hate is peering into the fandom and seeing two or three character types EXCLUSIVELY and also#lots and lots and lots of needless character bashing#or people insisting there's only One True Way to read a character (and usually being radically off from canon)#yes yes that sounds hypocritical but i s2g it's the people with the most incorrect ideas that insist that#anyone who disagrees with them is WRONG and BAD#im personally not gonna get mad at anyone for having a version of a character i dislike (if it REALLY bothers me i'll just avoid it)#what im talking about is the really unexamined behavior where this one character didnt deserve anything they went through#and is totally fine and needs more love and needs to be treated better by the canon#but you're not allowed to talk about this other character who is about the same in terms of crimes n everything but is the opposite gender#THAT character is irredeemable vile trash you're not allowed to talk about them and you're inherently an abuser if you like them#disclaimer; this is not about any one specific person or character this is a behavior i've seen across multiple fandoms

We occasionally feel like we should apologize to the creator whenever we deviate from canon on purpose, because primarily what we've been doing for the past few years is rapidly specializing into a specific niche like some sort of incomprehensibly fucked up cave bug unknown to science until we can make creations that Taste, and we're just kind of Posting That out there like it isn't kind of a weird thing to make.
We are aware we are weird, and we do it on purpose most of the time, but it's still an Experience, and sometimes we'll sit down, look at our writing, and think "gods, why did we do that?" and that is perhaps the most mortifying part of Making Things: we didn't Have To, and yet we did, and the creation we have brought into being could be the worst dreck in the world or the most beautiful thing anyone has ever known, and we wouldn't know, because it's Ours and we are, as all people, fundamentally incapable of seeing our own art in the same way others see it.
Technically, we don't have to post these things, but in practice, we want our art to be Seen, which is really a fundamental flaw of our character now that we think about it. We can say a whole lot of pretentious stuff about how the point of art is to feel things, but at the end of the day, the person who Feels most of all while making this stuff is us, and sometimes the Feeling being experienced is death of the self.
Sometimes, we think we should stop. Keep our works private, especially in smaller fandoms, only show them to friends. But that wouldn't make us happy, and it wouldn't make anything better, either. What is the point if we make something to be seen and it remains unseen, hidden, eventually lost? What is the point, if we make something and it vanishes into obscurity to never see the light again? What is the point, if we make for the enjoyment of making, and never share with others? Is it not a reduction, to consign ourself to fear and hiding under the fear of one person deciding we are "too weird" to keep around? By design, we invited ourself into this place. How far is too far? When are we to be forced to leave? How long do we have, before we are pulled from the shadows and forced into the light to be gaped at like a deformed, dead blobfish?
Despite it, whenever we find ourself doubting our right to be a bit of a freak, we look over to the spaces where people who write callout posts reside and are promptly reminded that if you don't have at least a few unkillable cockroach people around being weird and refusing to leave your spaces start getting overgrown with shame and misery and fear of being known, and that's not the sort of space you want in anything built around sharing your work, because it's awful to live and work in and just makes you feel worse no matter how you frame it.
Anyways, everything we write fucks severely and we're the sexiest bug in this godsforsaken cave biome.

Anywayssss I genuinely think this is one of the most important creek scenes we have so far and I don’t see a lot of people talk about it so let’s get into it
Tumblr media
So it all goes back to this scene-
Tumblr media
I know it’s generally agreed upon amongst the fandom that Tweek and Craig were only fake dating/doing it for the town at first, but at some point their relationship became real, and it’s easy to see why, I mean, it is left pretty vague in all fairness.
I, however though, don’t believe this to be the case? Like YES, the town shipping them together is absolutely what brought them together in the first place, and they did not seem to have any interest towards each other before that, that’s indisputable. HOWEVER I don’t think that necessarily means their relationship was “fake” either. I do think it took time and work to get to where they are now, but I also think that the whole situation, as crazy as it was, not only helped them both to be more open and honest with themselves about their sexualities, but also in the end, DID genuinely bring them closer together.
Tumblr media
One thing I have always found super interesting about Tweek in this episode (and this could just be me) is that unlike Craig, he doesn’t seem to struggle as much with accepting his sexuality but rather, how he will be perceived because of it. His first thought when finding out about all the yaoi art is “what if my parents find out?” He’s afraid and anxious of what others will THINK of him if they know.
But in this scene, it’s clear that he’s no longer afraid, and I feel what he says to Craig here sums it up pretty well-
“I’m so sorry Craig, you made me believe in myself in a way I never have before. I didn’t think it had any of that in me but, you were right! I can do more than I think. You CHANGED something in me and I want to fix whatever’s hurting you now.”
It’s because of CRAIG that he now has this newfound confidence, and I truly believe it changed his perspective of him. Obviously I don’t think he full on fell in love with Craig right there and then, but I DO think that Craig being the first person to ever really make him believe in himself has made him start to see him in a different light, acting as the catalyst for what was about to come (in more ways than one, but that’s another rant)
Tumblr media
It’s no secret that Tweek lives a pretty tough life. He’s abused, neglected, and no one really takes him seriously
But Craig?
Craig is the first person who has actually made feel Tweek SEEN. Like he’s MORE than what others, including himself, think that he is
Tumblr media
It’s such a brief scene, but I feel like it says SO much, because even just being there, sitting together on the couch and being able to talk about WHATEVER without feeling like he’s going to be judged because of it is probably WAY more than anyone else has ever done for him
Tumblr media
And you can tell it means the world to him

AITA for changing some rules in a discord server?
For some context, it was a discord server a friend was running. Since they needed some help, they made me one of the mods. The server was for people to do roleplays for characters in the specific fandom. As a general rule, we did not allow NSFW RPs. People had to do little auditions to show that they knew the character well enough to be able to rp as them. People also were not allowed to decide what other people did with their characters.
A new person (Bug) had joined and asked if we could ban a ship. Since I had been the only mod on at the time, I said no. The person insisted and then started pinging for the other mods, so we had a discussion. The person wanted to ban the ship because they HEADCANONED the characters in the ship as family. The other mods decided that since it was just a headcanon and that this person did not control either character involved in the ship that the ship would not be banned.
Bug flipped out when we delivered the news and went on a rant about how we did not make adopted children feel safe in the server. I had asked what they meant by that, and then they said that they were adopted. They viewed those characters as adoptive father and son, so if we did not ban the ship, we would be basically invalidating their relationship with their own father by making them feel unsafe there.
So I changed the rules with the permission of the other mods. The rules regarding ships were now "Characters and ships will not be banned. As long as the character is a consenting adult, they can be shipped with any other character that is not CANONICALLY their family. If the relationship you have in mind is based off headcanon, the ship will not be banned." The rest of the server agreed to this minus Bug.
Bug once again flipped out and said that banning ships were part of making people feel safe in the server. They also said that by allowing any ship, we were showing people that we were proship. That means to respects others for their fictional pairings regardless of their own feeling towards said pairing, but some people think it means supporting problematic ships. New person confirmed that this was what they thought proship meant.
So then I said, as a joke, "Fine. We'll change the rules." We put it in the rules to be "For every ship you ask to be banned, we will also ban one of the ships you like." And in slashed text "this is just a joke to test if people can read."
Other people clued in, but not Bug.
Bug had a tantrum over this saying it was unfair and would make people feel unsafe. They said it wasn't fair to ban a ship they liked because it brought them comfort. Then one of the other mods pointed out that they would be doing the same by asking for a ship to be banned. "The ship you want banned could be a comfort to other people here, so you'd be taking away their safe space."
Bug said that it did not matter cause the ship was "problematic" and that those people should be grateful they were losing the ship and others needed better tastes.
So I ended up banning them. Their friend joined later and called us all assholes for banning Bug and that we should have just done what they wanted instead.
So AITA?
What are these acronyms?

I've been seeing a lot of dumbass sebaciel posts, no doubt cause of the new season so with that being said I'm going to do what I do best and rant.
Remember that sebaciel is NOT canon, while I'm aware there's unfortunately a lot of bait in both the manga and anime, it's nothing more than that, bait.
Black Butler is not and was never intended to be a yaoi between Ciel and Sebastian as there is no legitimate proof of this being true( and if your only proof is out of context scenes and art you are quite literally falling for bait lol) it's just a rumor that was started by sebaciel shippers. If you see anyone claiming this is true just know it's misinformation.
While yes it's true that Yana Toboso has written shotacon in her past, those are literally works that has NOTHING TO DO WITH BLACK BUTLER. So using her past works as some kind of gacha is just really fucking stupid.
And saying she's a sebaciel shipper because she baits you people is honestly stupid as well, as far as I'm aware she has never said anything about the ship( or ships in general) so her being a sebaciel shipper is honestly just speculation.
Black Butler is not, and as far as I'm aware, will never be about sebaciel. You are allowed to enjoy this media and be in the fandom without being a sebaciel shipper.
There's so much more to black butler than a dumbass ship but these people have their heads so far up their own asses to actually appreciate the story for what it is.
If you ship sebaciel then fine, I will just block you on sight, but trying to make people who don't ship it look like the weirdos in the fandom is really fucking shitty. But that's expected from people who thinks being problematic is a personality trait.

Sorry if this seems repetitive but I haven't been active on social media in yearsss
Is it true that there's a lot of lawlu hate on tiktok and Twitter? I'm so confused because there used to be so much love for the ship back in 2017/2018 from my perspective (Amino era).
The short answer: yes and no. Let me start by saying I'm not the best person to answer this since I purely consume on twitter. I made my personal twitter in 2007 like it's everyone I've ever known irl and has nothing to do with shipping or hobbies and I follow approx 0 accounts related to anime, manga, or lawlu. I just looked up lawlu a few times and browsed and suddenly it's my whole fucking timeline and there’s no going back and now I have a lawlu twitter (This makes me very happy).
So if anyone else has an opinion on this that is more in the community, please feel free to comment away. Otherwise, below are my observations.
First off, there IS a ton of love for the ship. Most of what I see is beautiful art (they got the nsfw ayo), memes, fanfics, and headcanons just like tumblr. There are tons of comments of people swooning over these posts, Lawlu IS one of the most popular OP ships after all.
There's just a vocal minority that are very against the concept of shipping and in that subset there are those who are very against Lawlu. There people out there that will literally list accounts to block that ship lawlu or write lawlu DNI in their bios. The same can be said for other ships, it's not just this one it’s any they deem a ‘pro ship’ (problematic ship) and Lawlu is generally considered one of these. Below as is an example:
Tumblr media
The biggest issues I’ve seen with Lawlu are the following 1. luffy is aroace and cant be shipped period 2. law groomed luffy and the age gap is gross. IMO I think most of these people are just infantilizing Luffy as some goofy autistic kid that doesn't know what love and sex are when in reality he's very self-aware and happy does not equal stupid. Also he's 19 he’s not underage. He met Law twice when he was 17, one of which was saving his life as a doctor and Luffy was unconscious most of this time. Let's not forget Luffy's a war criminal kicking the asses of people 4x his age in a pirate world, age doesn't really work the same as irl.
BUTTT Not that any of this matters because you can ship whoever the fuck you what because guess what? It's ~fiction~. I could rant about how people can ship whatever the hell they want all day but I'll save my breath for now. (my opinion of course)
Also there are just mentally ill people who enjoy telling others to kys if you like something they like do. Lawlu shippers are just their chosen target demographic. Creators get foul messages in their inboxes, rude comments, just general hater behavior. Twitter is just a firey cesspool and all fandoms have 'fans' who do nothing but hate. We live in an age of negativity where being a hater is the cool thing to do.
HOWEVER, I see more people posting about why those people are wrong and stupid than the actual negative tweets but maybe that's because I actually support the ship and the algorithm sees that. Not sure how twitter works, nor do I want to know about that dumpster fire there's a reason I came over to tumblr.
As for tiktok, I don't really consume a lot of tiktok so I can't speak on it besides seeing cosplayers and cute animations/art. I'll leave that to the tiktok people to look into.
For argument's sake, I went through the lawlu tag and picked some lovely tweets to share with you so you can see the toxicity for yourself. Sadly only 10 images per post but I think you get the point. Thanks for the ask hope this was informative. :)

The COD community and shipping
Tumblr media
So, lately I have been getting a strange influx of anti-Ghoap posts on my feed. Just multiple posts ranting about how Ghoap is bad to ship and how it's not canon, will never be canon, and people shouldn't ship them because they are just friends. So, as someone who has been in a variety of fandoms and has a lot of experience in shipping communities, I want to discuss this because many of the people writing these rants seem to either have never interacted with fandom content before or just never heard of shipping before.
Shipping is when the fandom of a media (Ie: Show, Movie, Book, Game, ect..) thinks certain characters would make a good couple. People who make Ship content are people who draw, write fanfics, ect.. about said characters as a couple. Shipping has existed since there has been media with characters to ship
After the call of duty modern warfare reboots came out, there were an influx of newer fans who came in, many of them being people who have been part of shipping communities in the past. So, when they saw the entertaining dynamic between Ghost and Soap, they began to ship them and this seems to somehow upset people.
Many people got upset mostly due to the fact Ghost and Soap are "Just friends" and insist their playful banter shouldn't be taken as flirting even though many lines such as "Like a good ol boy" and "That's why I love the Ghost" can easily be interpreted as flirting. This isn't even to mention the fact that people have been shipping non canon ships since the dawn of shipping. Hell, people use to ship characters from entire different franchises. Just because they aren't dating in canon doesn't mean they can't be shipped.
Some like to argue that people should just allow platonic relationships to remain platonic and this argument is rather weak for multiple reasons. First of all, platonic relationships are not superior to romantic ones, they are both equally valuable. Secondly, many romantic relationships BEGIN as strong platonic relationships.
While I'm not the type of person to scream "homophobia" at every little thing, there's no denial that the hatred people have for Ghoap comes from homophobia. Before the influx of newer fans, Cod was infamous for it's widely homophobic and racist player base and those players are still very prominent in cod lobbies to this day. So, it makes sense they would be upset to see a large influx of more inclusive fans that also made a gay ship very popular. There's no doubt that a large reason for why so many people have such an issue with a ship as harmless as Ghoap correlates with the very present homophobia within the COD community
Generally, there's no reason to be upset over Ghoap. You're allowed to dislike ships, that's fine, but don't go around throwing a fit and getting mad at people who ship a perfectly harmless ship just because you personally dislike it. There are bigger things to worry about than strangers on the internet thinking two men who canonically get along very well together would make a cute couple.

I want to preface this little rant by saying that I am all for ship and let ship—at the end of the day none of this has any significance, and we should all get to enjoy our silly little ships to our heart’s content. Me personally I just want Elain to do whatever the hell she wants and be happy in the end. That being said, rn I just felt like getting something off my chest.
From what I have seen and understood, most of The Other Side believes that Azriel feels entitled to Elain. That he sees her as a sexual object, or at the very most as a rebound he doesn’t truly care for, nor respect; he does not think of her beyond what he can get from her sexually. They say his attitude towards her is toxic in its ‘possessiveness’; he doesn’t consider her an equal, for he sees her as a perpetual damsel in distress he must save; his attraction to her / feelings for her are a symptom of some twisted trauma response.
We know that they believe that. We’ve heard it. Over and over and over. Since 2021. Hell, everybody’s momma probably knows it, too, with the way that rhetoric is spread. But Elriels have made it plenty clear that we have a very different interpretation of the text and do NOT agree with those assessments of Azriel (nor half the things the poor man is diagnosed with, bless his fictional soul), considering what we do know of Azriel’s character and his relationship with Elain, based on the books--and yes, the bonus (see this, this, and this post). Otherwise—i.e. if we believed him an incel x fuckboy hybrid (probs the first of his kind!) who is only interested in getting her in is bed—we would obviously not be shipping them together: most of us (99% I’d say lol) care about Elain more than we do Az, or care about them both just as much.
So it is getting pretty tiring to see us shippers—the actual humans behind the screen—labelled as having a toxic/immature view of what love is, of being “too young/naive” to see the supposed red flags, of mistaking lust for love because we have not experienced a healthy relationship (?), of actually promoting toxic relationships & advocating for toxic masculinity (which someone told me on tiktok just now)(stay away from tiktok, folks). Those generalizations are wild to me, not only because they are wildly untrue and condescending, but because Elriels are a colorful bunch, you know—when you’re speaking of the fandom Villain™, you’re speaking of people of every demographic, speaking of daughters mothers grandmothers, depressed uni students (pardon the self-insert), etc... I need to get thicker skin, but those statements can get pretty hurtful in the long run. And I’m tired of feeling the need to justify myself as if we’re wrong for shipping two people who MUTUALLY want one another and lets be serious, no its not “just lust”.
I know I know, I am probably being dramatic. But it’s just weird to see a ship being so demonized and its shippers along with it, all because louder portions of the fandom disagree with our opinions and insist on toxifying ours. Just to be clear, I know that many have had unpleasant experiences/interactions with Elriels, just like many Elriels have had the same with Gwynriels and/or Eluciens. I condone none of the disgusting behaviour I’ve seen from some shippers, and in fact I abhor it. As everyone should.
To end this on a good note.
Elriels, I say we run with it. Az wants Elain for himself. He is jealous and his mind is plagued by thoughts of her. Her presence is too much to bear, for he can’t stand to be in the same room as her and pretend like he feels nothing. He is ready to beg on his knees for a chance to worship her, and it took Nesta one look to see it.
AZ IS OBSESSED AND I SAY WE EMBRACE IT.

Ok but we get harassed for tagging ships that are in the post too just because there’s other ones mentioned
The fandom is supposed to be fun! You guys support harassment and bullying over fiction! The problem that needs addressing is the people who harass not the people who tag! There’s a way to get people not to tag btw it’s tell them nicely! Not act horribly! Jily fans been sending jegulus writers hate & writing “if you wrote jily maybe you’d get treated better” the problem lies with the way jily fans act & people will start biting back because people can only take so much.
OK so I was looking at this for some minutes, truly dumbfounded. Because it's like no matter what we say we're not being heard.
Rant below for those who want to avoid it lol
"You guys support harassment and bullying over fiction!"
I'm ?????? Where in the world have either of us who have spoken up done that? When have we ever said anything other than "tag your posts properly"? Don't these two sentences have completely different meaning? Who are these people that are harassing? Because harassment is never ok and we have not encouraged that. But if you think that simply telling a person who used incorrect tags to remove the extra ones is harassment, I'll have to tell you that no, it is not, it is a very normal thing to do actually.
Yesterday there were a few posts about asking people to tag properly and in response we got that "Jily fans are horrible and inhumane, they harass and bully, they're the worst people ever" and actually got harassed in response. Do you think there's anything normal and fitting in what happened and in that reaction?
"Jily fans been sending jegulus writers hate & writing “if you wrote jily maybe you’d get treated better” this is actually wild because NONE OF US in our community have done that or WANT that, we want to stay as far away from all of that as possible. If you have some anon trolls going around in the community, that has nothing to do with us, most of us are grown people who have been fans since books came out and ain't nobody got time for that, I'm sure most of us don't even know who your writers are or their accounts. In fact, you can tell just by wording of that message that it's clearly a troublemaking troll and not a serious fan, no normal human talks like that.
As for fandom being fun, YES, it's supposed to be fun! But this is where my words about it not being a group project come in, because what's fun for you is not fun for us! In fact, it's the opposite of fun, we dislike it immensely, it upsets us and puts us in a bad mood and it doesn't even belong in our tag. So why should we be upset every single day, going into our tag that's supposed to be a place of comfort and fun, seeing things that are not supposed to be there, when people can simply --- tag properly according to Tumblr guidelines? And this is not new, we've been put through this for years now, and we've been asking politely over and over and over and nobody is listening, and now that we've gotten louder - in our own tag - suddenly we're the bad guys and harassers. When should it be enough? So this part of the ask "people will start biting back because people can only take so much" was incredibly ironic, because we've been taking it for YEARS and now we aren't even biting back, we're simply asking to tag and posting silly memes in our own space but are still getting vilified.
I will also address the first point because I think it causes a lot of general confusion about tagging:
"tagging ships that are in the post too just because there’s other ones mentioned"
A ship tag is for posts that have positive mentions of that ship. If a post mentions multiple ships and is "X is great, Y is good, Jily is bad, I don't like it anymore" - this is not for Jily tag; If a post has "Jily were together for 2 minutes, broke up and then *insert 3 paragraphs gushing over another ship that were true loves*" - this is not for Jily tag; If a post has a poly ship that includes James and Lily - this is another ship, not Jily; If a post is a huge fanfic dedicated to another ship with James or Lily and then has the last sentence about Jily basically settling together - this is not for Jily tag, though I see how there could be arguments about it; There are many other instances too that I can't think of right away at this moment, but basically there's nuance here and just because Jily is brought up in a post doesn't make a post about Jily and the tag is for people who love the ship and want to celebrate their love, and the last thing they want to see there is completely unrelated posts with random Jily cameo in them that do not even portray them in a good way. This last topic is a bit of a complicated one with slippery edges, but I hope it was still comprehensible.

I have a strong hatred of people's recent interpretation of the found family trope and how they criticise anyone who doesn't see it that way.
And I think the way Luz x Hunter is treated as incestuous is a great example. Like I don't personally ship it but I've been getting really frustrated with Tiktoks "perfect" narratives and dislike for anything noncanon.
"Oh well Eda practically adopted Luz and he's probably related to the clawthornes" Eda is pretty much the only example where she is actually referred to as a direct parental figure. BUT. That doesn't suddenly make them biologically related and honestly even if they were I think this criticism is a stretch.
"Oh well Camila practically adopted Hunter-" No. No. That is just not how this works. She took in ALL those kids. Including Amity. Yet no one says that's incest.
"Were family" doesn't need to immediately mean "we're siblings." And although I fully support the idea of the "sibling dynamic" the fandom loves to push I really don't think it's as black and white as that.
And although I don't particularly ship Lunter myself I don't like the idea that Hunter and Luz are basically siblings cause found family can and IS about seeing your friends as family. (And CAN include romantic relationships. Are you saying you'll never see your romantic partner as family?? )
Idk peoples need to give moral reasons as to why they hate a ship is just driving me insane. Lots of fandoms have duos that some people see as romantic and other see as a sibling dynamic.
I feel like the TOH fandom is just unnecessarily mean about Lunter shippers. But also fandoms in general are getting more and more like this and this is just one of many rants I could go on.
I feel like the only criticism of lunter that I can actually listen to is the age gap but no one ever actually brings that up.
And the role pushing of found family is my true enemy .

The debate about the appropriateness of Jonsa overshadows the political/feudal argument. Unless you can make a convincing case Sansa is going to run away and become a peasant with Sandor (didn't GRRM literally mock that...), or that she can singlehandedly Elizabeth the first it, then you need to be thinking about marriage. Marriage is just as important as war in GRRM's books, if not moreso, and it's a symbolic struggle at that.
Of course Stumpy has searched for Sansa's husband and applied this thinking, but it's one that's otherwise severely lacking. GRRM would go there. We know he'd go there, cousins or not. The question is, why?
Tumblr media
Stumpy's Find Sansa's Husband is one of my favs!
No worries! Each of us has a fandom pet peeve we need to rant about. And you're right about Martin's criticism of the "running off with a stable boy trope," in fact, it sounds like the idea really annoys him (his quote below the cut)
And then there are some things that are just don’t square with history. In some sense I’m trying to respond to that. [For example] the arranged marriage, which you see constantly in the historical fiction and television show, almost always when there’s an arranged marriage, the girl doesn’t want it and rejects it and she runs off with the stable boy instead. This never fucking happened. It just didn’t. There were thousands, tens of thousand, perhaps hundreds of thousands of arranged marriages in the nobility through the thousand years of Middle Ages and people went through with them. That’s how you did it. It wasn’t questioned. Yeah, occasionally you would want someone else, but you wouldn’t run off with the stable boy. And that’s another of my pet peeves about fantasies. The bad authors adopt the class structures of the Middle Ages; where you had the royalty and then you had the nobility and you had the merchant class and then you have the peasants and so forth. But they don’t’ seem to realize what it actually meant. They have scenes where the spunky peasant girl tells off the pretty prince. The pretty prince would have raped the spunky peasant girl. He would have put her in the stocks and then had garbage thrown at her. You know. I mean, the class structures in places like this had teeth. They had consequences. And people were brought up from their childhood to know their place and to know that duties of their class and the privileges of their class. It was always a source of friction when someone got outside of that thing. And I tried to reflect that.
I think the issue is, S*nsans and people who shipped Sansa with LF were some of the first to write real meta on her (from what I've heard), so certain fans/perceptions got pretty firmly established, and then a new generation of Sansa fan came along who rejected the Sansa x adult man/molester ships, but it was pretty easy for them to assume that due to Sansa's age, Martin would leave her marriage to the future.
Also, a lot of people don't expect Sansa to be QitN, so the succession issue isn't putting pressure on the marriage timeline, and if you're someone who thinks Bran will actually be king over all Westeros or Rickon will be KitN etc etc, you can imagine Sansa's endgame is safety in Winterfell, not a romance or marriage.
Personally, I think Sansa's interactions with Cersei and LF indicate that she wants to be the right kind of queen (in defiance of Cersei's advice) and is being equipped with tools to achieve her own ends / play the game, for the right reasons, to good ends, but being handed tools nonetheless. She is so unfocused on her birthright and power, it seemed like she was meant to be contrasted with Cersei and Dany. The natural endpoint of that imo would be her becoming queen. And, if she is queen, I've argued that based on other queen's experiences, we must see her married as being a queen is a whole new set of risks, not a happy ending in and of itself.
Of course, some have speculated that the endgame will be indicated, not actually chronicled on the page, as in, Jon and Sansa fall in love, but Jon does get sent to the wall or goes into exile for a callback of what Sansa imagined she could do to save Ned, and we end kinda knowing, eventually they'll get back together, but the actual happy ending isn't on the page. Or the alternative scenario is that Jon is named KitN because of Robb's Will and marries Sansa to resolve all the chaos after parentage reveal. That's where your thoughts on the political aspect of marriage comes in because that would be very tidy. Actually, whoever is recognized by the Northern Lords, whether it’s my preference of Sansa or Jon, the heir issue was a big deal for Robb, so marriage / heirs will certainly come up and impact the plot.
As for Jonsa itself and it being icky to some, I've said before, I think Martin must have something he wants to do with incest beyond showcasing how toxic it is. As in, that is not a way to challenge the reader, by saying something we all know, and his whole shtick is to write complexity into every relationship, every hero, even many villains, so I don't for a minute believe that's he's introduced this topic without planning to ask the audience to think a little more deeply on it. To force us to look at it from a different angle. The way he does that is to give us heroes who are tempted and make us squirm until we get parentage reveal.

It's not as if I think r/fanfiction is complete trash or I wouldn't be there, but honestly...some of the posts on that subreddit have the unfortunate side effect of causing brain cells to fall out of my head. It's like ticking psychic damage.
Almost all the posts about feedback are whining about the exact feedback received or are complaining about the lack of feedback in general. Like I don't know what to tell these people except that the former leads to the latter and almost everyone who gets no feedback is doing something wrong or has set their expectations too high.
There's a post on there today by a perfectly nice person who doesn't know how to deal with the lack of engagement on their fics and there's just not a kind way of saying "you're writing for a 30+ year old fandom and you're not writing what people want to see there" so I had to pretty much just tell them that.
A lot of the metrics for engagement are in your control (the fandom and characters you write about, the tropes you use). If I wrote 100k word long fics for a popular ship in a popular fandom I'd have more engagement than I knew what to do with.
I'm the one who chose to write about a 20 year old fandom. I'm the one who chose to write about an unpopular ship. I'm the one who chose to write about babies and children and pregnancy TWICE IN A ROW (two of the biggest squicks in fandom). I did this to me. I knew going in it might be rough. I feel blessed to have readers at all to be honest.
Like I fully understand that low engagement sucks. My spouse gets on me about "wasting my time writing stuff two people will read" (when I could be doing other things). But I started writing the 'fic knowing damn well there was a good chance I wouldn't have an audience at all.
The person from today's post had someone comment on every chapter of their story and better stats than I can manage in the ToS fandom. I don't think it's just a comparative "they're doing pretty well" situation either. I honestly believe that their stats are pretty good for an old fandom. Why did they expect more, this being their first set of works published?
Again, I understand feeling disappointment, but to go and post on Reddit about it... I just can't. And this isn't even getting into the people who whine about the comments they do receive. I might rant about that later though.
