it’s been three months since you started receiving love letters in your mailbox. the pieces of paper were of high quality, nicely packed in textured envelopes, sometimes tied to a single flower. the wax that seals them is stamped with what seems to be a custom-made design- one that says “for [name].”

there is no signature. not in the letters, not on the envelope, not within the wax. but you know the identity of your secret admirer. it seeps through his handwriting, so gracefully cursive and perfectly uniform. it shows in his language, his words chosen with care.

unsurprisingly, however, the one thing that most gives away his identity is the quality of the love letters. extravagant, rare, expensive; items that only a certain wine tycoon could afford.

and sometimes, you pick a letter to bring to angel’s share to “figure out” who its writer is with your closest friends, just to meet with a red-haired, red-faced bartender who refuses to serve your table on that particular night. amusing, he is, and you wonder if you could deal with this for just a little longer.

kamisato ayato ; special gifts

leaving for work in the morning is usually a routine task. uneventful, monotonous. but every once in a while, you open the door and find a fancy-looking parcel right outside of it. most of the time, it’s wrapped in silk, with a note neatly slipped in between the knots saying “- from your secret admirer ;)”.

sometimes, the gift is practical. a teapot set along with varied flavours of tea would be one of your favourites. sometimes, it’s not so useful. you recall a huge, clunky, vase that just does not fit anywhere in your home. and sometimes, it’s the one thing you need at that point of time. you feel your heart swell at the sight of a bubble tea coupon.

of course, you’d been meaning to find out who's been leaving these gifts outside of your home when you were asleep. then on one night, you come home late; exhausted, sweaty, and absolutely not comprehending the flamboyantly dressed man squatting at your door.

“ah! apologies for the intrusion. i was simply cleaning your front yard.” he says smoothly, like the silk package in his hand does not exist. interrogating this grinning stranger is the first thing you want to do; looks like sleep will have to wait.

venti ; romantically inspired words

venti has a way with words. he’s a well known bard for that reason. his songs tell many a story- but lately, they seem to jitter around a specific tale; a tale of hushed love. he writes them with you, but there are times you hear him mutter a “for you“ to correct his mistake. you’re not supposed to hear that, by the way.

then he sings them. first, alone with you, which he calls a practice session. playing his lyre then must be difficult, as he doesn’t look at you at all. afterwards, he sings to the crowd. this time, he looks straight into your eyes. face prettied up with an innocent grin. but he is red- and you’re unsure if it’s a bashful blush or the sign of too much wine.

peaceful days are the days you spend the most time with him. you sit together under the oak tree and accompany him and his poems. spontaneously exchanging poems with you is a favourite pastime of his, and he praises you for every rhyme and every choice of word.

and when the clouds gather to hide the sun, you take a nap, resting your head on his shoulder. if he was trying to be subtle before, he definitely isn’t trying now. because as your eyes start to close, you hear his sweet voice whisper a short phrase: i like you.

scaramouche ; little things

there are many things that scaramouche doesn’t do. he doesn’t care. he doesn’t fear. he doesn’t owe anyone anything. a tough guy, he is, and he owns that fact. so when you come into his life as a work partner, and he actually does things, it doesn’t come off as subtle as he expects it to be.

like the times he takes half of your tasks, saying that he’d do a better job at them anyways. or the times he insists you do tasks together because “that’s just what’s expected of us, you should start paying more attention”. or the times he suggests sharing a room on an expedition to give tactical advice, just to turn the lights off early and sleep.

and as if that’s not enough, the many things he does come outside of work as well- which raises some speculative eyebrows, including yours. scaramouche, in all his “you are all pawns to me” glory, brings you cups of tea when paperwork is heavy. he cleans your table as you work, insulting you all the while.

but most surprising of all are the things he does when you’re not around. scaramouche cares not about gossip- but when your subordinates criticise you, he’s always the first to shut their mouths. perhaps the things he does are not so little after all.

Spetsnaz with a secret admirer

Kapkan

- This lone wolf would definitely be taken off guard by the appearance of a gift left for him.

-After getting over his initial confusion, it wouldn’t take him long to slip away from people for some privacy as he tries to open the little wrapped gift without getting the wrapping everywhere.

- He’s the type to double check if anyone is around before actually looking at the gift. In his defense, this feels like it was meant just for him, so he should be the only one seeing it.

- Beneath all the wrapping was a cool steel knife. Made in a similar fashion to a buck knife with a wooden handle.

- Upon further inspection, he’d notice the initials carved onto the wood. His own boldly stood out to him, but the other one… he was unsure.

- He put together quickly that it was probably the one who gifted him the polished blade.

-The initials weren’t much to go off of, and he didn’t want to have to ask around too much. People would get curious as to what he’s up too. Especially his comrades.

- Luckily, Maxim’s a respectable hunter who likes a good chase.

Glaz

- A true artist like himself is pretty in touch with his emotions and has a deep appreciation for anything that can speak to them.

- So when he finds a nice leather notebook left on the bench in his locker (one that is definitely not his, as the one he keeps in his locker is typically much smaller), he’s immediately reaching for it out of curiosity.

- Feeling the firm leather, Timur could tell it was pretty high quality. Someone must have wanted it to be nice.

- He doesn’t go to hide away with it, but he keeps it on the down low.

- Gracefully, he opens the notebook to see handwriting on the cover’s inside, a detection to himself from a mystery lover.

- He couldn’t help but give a little smile at the thought of someone taking the time for him. And getting him something he would definitely be using at that.

- He was going to find out who they were, but he found himself liking the mystery lover’s unknown identity.

Fuze

- Left right in his locker was a bundle of white tulips.

- Shuhrat is overcome with confusion at them, slipping off some of his heavier gear as he sat down next to the flowers, before gently picking them up to look for any reason why they would be here.

- The thought of a secret admirer probably doesn’t even cross his mind.

- But when he finds a little note attached to it with words such as “With love” he suddenly becomes aware that he’s holding a gift. One sent with love at that.

- His brain stops functioning for a second, just holding the flowers and staring at them blankly. A meek attempt to process that someone was gifting him flowers.

- His spacing out is swiftly replaced by a sense of panic when he hears his comrades voices drawing near. He knows that Alexsandr would give him the teasing of his life if he found out Shuhrat was being fancied by someone.

- He didn’t know why but he felt a tug on his heartstrings as he went to throw them somewhere randomly hidden. Causing him to change his mind last minute, opting to have them gently placed back in his locker instead.

Tachanka

- Alexsandr is a charming show-off so having people admire him isn’t exactly a new thing, but a real admirer?

- Working out with his fellow Spetsnaz Ops is a regular suggestion from Alex. And it leaves his locker free reign for leaving him a little something.

- So when they started to settle down and head up for some drinks and a rest. He almost doesn’t notice the letter left for him. The part that catches his eye is the little red scribbled heart against the white paper.

- He doesn’t hesitate to pick it up, looking it over with a gleam in his eyes.

- Even with his comrades around, Alex opens the hearted paper, a very different texture than the work out equipment he was using before.

- Seeing it’s a lovely love letter, he’s instantly reading it through. He’s smirking and gives a few laughs at some of the letter.

- Not laughing at who this secret admirer is, more of he’s flattered and laughing is his natural reaction.

- Alexsandr thinks the letter is adorable and is dying to know who his admirer is. Unlike many of the others, he’s absolutely and shamelessly asking around to figure out who they are.

What's your headcanons for Columbo?

Does he have a wife? Does he have over 10 murderer boyfriends? Etc

part of what makes columbo so fun to watch is that the showrunners essentially wanted you to make headcanons about columbo. much of the intended fun and mystique of the character is thinking about his personal life and what makes him tick.

now as for me, i'm completely nuts, so asking me about my columbo headcanons is like opening pandora's box. it's overwhelming. i have headcanons about what the man wears when he begrudgingly remembers to take out the trash at 11 pm. so i'll try to keep it short with my more sane and general ones:

his name is francesco

his wife is real. it's fun to imagine him single, but the wifeless theory doesn't hold much water. as time went on, the writers made a conscious and overt decision to make columbo's wife a real entity. between private phone calls and cruise trips, it becomes an active effort for one to ignore her presence, despite the fact that you never see her. in fact, they came close to showing her:

my headcanon for them is that they're like most interesting couples: similar in important ways, but complementary. e.g. columbo clawed his way out of high school, she finished postgrad summa cum laude. he's messy, she's clean. he loves gourmet cooking, she burns water. she's a techie, he couldn't hack his way out of a paper bag. she has her series 7 license, he kind of knows what a stock is. etc.

he reads. constantly. even if it's just the newspaper

he's more refined than he lets on. columbo may be a self-proclaimed chili-eating mark twain louis armstrong cream soda kind of guy who confuses HVAC ductwork for art installations, but i think he's someone who cares about the integrity of the things around him. he has taste. he's realistic, he values simplicity, but he's not a rube. he appreciates quality items, good food, good music, and fine traits in people.

he's more introverted than he lets on. he can be garrulous and friendly with strangers, but lots of times we find him silent and/or lost in thought. he largely works alone and we often see him alone off the clock.

his job affects him more than he lets on. i mean kind of a given, right? he's seen it all, but he's still human. aside from being perpetually tired and hungry because he's hyperfixating on his work, i imagine he has some degree of post-traumatic stress. in my head columbo wakes up sometimes in a cold sweat thinking about the girl who jumped off a balcony or the guy strangled to death at the gym

he was a troublemaker as a kid. i love imagining him as an agent of the law born out of his chaotic, delinquent upbringing. i sometimes entertain the theory that he's killed or had someone close to him killed as an impetus for the sheer drive he has for his work. i also think he was definitely the most annoying motherfucker on the block as a kid and his brothers bullied him for it so hard he turned it into a strength

his fashion sense is actually good. more of a gripe i have than a headcanon. it irks me when people diss columbo's fit. young columbo clearly knows how to dress, and stock standard columbo changes subtly throughout the show. but the basics--the tan raincoat, grey/reddish/brown suit, white/creme button-down, dark green tie, brown chukka boots--are very well-coordinated in color and material. they're baggy out of necessity, not sloppiness. he moves around constantly and thus prioritizes comfort in a job and milieu that require a suit and tie in sunny southern california. it makes perfect sense that he'd eschew a sharply tailored worsted wool getup and opt for roomy linen! he dislikes overly tight clothes. which leads me to...

...he's a certified Freak and he gets "weirder" with age as he grows less and less concerned with how he comes off to others--"masking", so to speak. related to this is that the raincoat is his safety blanket, as he's sensitive to textures and levels of pressure/constriction. just look at him trying to think in the Wrong Coat:

sometimes he'll swing by the grocery store at 10 pm to pick up something for the wife and when nobody is looking he rides his shopping cart through the store like this

he has a strategy when he goes to buffets. the little old lady in front of him may be piling noodles and rice onto her plate but columbo's got so much steak and shrimp on his that they're about to ask him to leave

why hello!! Sorry for such a late answer!!

so, I’m a fun little something we call ✨inconsistent✨(sigh) so while I may not be the best person to ask…but here’s things I commonly use color wise (favored art supply dump)

Alchohol ink markers

I use these most, they are a beautiful thing, my favorite are Ohuhu as they are high quality and a much lower price then brands such as Copic. (Can you taste the salt.)

They have less blend ability in comparison to Copic but are overall a much better investment if you ask me! They are great for a more smooth look! Another one I have around that I use for less saturated colors is touch youch youch

I very much prefer brush pens over the chiseled ones, for a paint like experience, and more dynamic application! Again these are just personal preference!

(I have a bad habit of opening ink capsules and painting with ink. I would not necessarily recommend this.)

Watercolor

There’s lots of pretty nice watercolor you can get for a pretty cheap price! The ones I prefer currently are MeiLiang, I got them online for a good price and they are very nice!

That said I do mix around different brands and such, whatever is on hand.

Gel pens

I love gel pens, even if you just have like one or two it’s such a difference!! I love just having white ones for adding little details and such to drawings! You can also get colors if you like! I use the Jellyrollers!

Colored pencils

a lot of people hate colored pencils which I get, but I find them very helpful for detailing (when I have motivation to do so lol) I often use them on top of drawings I’ve layed down a base of alcohol ink with! That way it has a clean base and can add the fun texture and stuff afterwards!! Those smooth looks can be achieved with pencils alone, I often just don’t have time for that :) it’s very fun though, layering is key with pencils

I do very much enjoy prismicolor colored pencils!!! It’s an investment I don’t regret lol, although I’m sure any soft core colored pencils would have the same effect!!

Posca

occasionally I use posca markers for large poster sized drawings, esp for the ink capsules. I like the paint coverage!! That said they can be a pain to work with.

it’s probably not good to be like me and use all of this on sketch paper. (I know. I’m aware that that is psychotic.) but I do normally use sketch paper, getting some multi medium paper might be good if you are interested in paints inks and pencils though, that way you can use it for all of the above :))

Color wise that’s what I commonly mix and match with, when it comes to pens my FAVORITE pens to sketch or do lineart with are Tombow calligraphy pens. Simple brush pens, it makes detailing harder but I enjoy the dynamics. There’s lots of micro pens you can find for small details as well!! I also prefer to use mechanical pencils for sketching, simply because the mechanical lead stays thin and sharp instead of getting dull. That said, I use very cheap mechanical pencils, and sometimes you need a full pencil depending on the project.

There’s a little mini rant on the art supplies I use color wise, again these are just my preferences from what I’ve tried!! I’m by no means a professional haha, i very much experiment and make a mess of things!

Traditional art can become…quite the investment. Especially when it comes to buying all of the art supplies as your resources dwindle. I have to buy new art supplies much more often than I’d like to admit.

All that said, I am a firm believer of art being able to be formed from any medium!! >:D

be it a simple 2b pencil, a ballpoint pen, or crayons products, I think anything can be used to make something really pretty :))

Only real advice I have is don’t be scared to mix and match, get messy, and experiment!! Do whatever’s most fun, and don’t think you can’t make something great from something simple!! There’s no real rules. Only techniques and suggestions. It can be daunting because there’s no undo button in traditional art, but I think that’s a really good way to expand your abilities :0 it teaches you to roll with mess ups and learn how to work with them!!

Most importantly, let yourself learn from others, but NEVER let people force how you use your supplies, don’t be scared to beat them up if that’s what you need (the art supplies not the people.), and don’t think you need the fanciest things to make nice things >:D

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person in the world who still remembers and loves CDs. Vinyl records have made a comeback and are now considered cool among certain varieties of hipster and audiophile, but CDs haven't had the same treatment.

And like, to some extent, I kinda understand that. CDs aren't cool. Records are cool. They're big and textured and elegant and they're objectively old enough to feel vintage rather than dated. They're not exactly durable but they make up for their fragility with their other positive qualities, and you could certainly argue that warping and scratches add exactly the kind of character to a record that we've lost with digital music and therefore crave from physical media. A slightly damaged CD pretty much always just becomes totally unplayable.

So I get it. And I'll readily admit that the biggest reason why I like CDs is simply that I grew up with them and have fond memories of them. But I do also think it's objectively true that there are certain positive features unique to CDs. I will never tire of the experience of giving and receiving mix CDs. You can't do that with a record. (I mean, I don't think you can? Not easily, at any rate.) And it's not the same as a playlist! It's not the same. When you make a mix CD, you not only curate the music for the recipient, you burn the disc, you decorate it, you make the sleeve or pick the jewel case and make the paper insert for it, figure out how to wrap/package it. I mean, obviously you don't have to do all of these things, but the opportunity is there for a lot of creativity and love. And in the end the person gets both the physical object as well as being able to make digital copies of the songs on their computer (which also allows them to use those songs in their future mix CDs, continuing the cycle!).

The mix CD is just so unpretentious, wholesome, and kind. It gave the average person unprecedented power over how music was curated and shared. (I mean, of course mix tapes did something similar, and maybe they deserve more credit than I give them, simply because they're from before my time; but I kind of have to assume that CD mixing is a much simpler and more efficient process.) The mix CD creates a loving context for experiencing music. Here, I made this! Special from me, for you! I think context is one of the things which we most desperately miss in this modern age, where we're fed our newest songs by the goddamn algorithm (whether that's Spotify, TikTok, YouTube, or whatever). The mix CD is personal, human, earnest and sweet.

(And yes, to some extent, playlists do this as well, and they have their own advantages. But I think the shareability of playlists, while making it possible for many more people to experience your creation, has ended up discouraging the intimate act of making something just for one other person and instead promotes the idea that what is most desirable is to have your work seen by the greatest possible number of people.)

I started thinking about this because I saw another post talking about the removal of CD/DVD drives from computers and it really does make me sad thinking that this may be the final nail in the coffin of the mix CD. I've had to depend on external disc drives to make my mixes, and I'm sure that for most people, CDs have passed totally out of their awareness.

I'm not saying the mix CD is the end all be all of sharing music. There are already lots of other ways to share music and I would quite like to think that we will continue to invent new ways. But I do find it very sad that the art of the mix CD is dying, and while the mix CD itself may be doomed, I really hope that we don't forget its virtues, and find a way to keep the spirit of the thing alive. Physical object as well as digital copies that can be shared with others, permanent ownership of the music (rather than just streaming/renting), the burning and reading of this object being cheap and accessible, personal touch/high customizability (not being limited simply to song order, a single cover image, and a short description), intimacy. These are what I don't want to lose.

For fabrics, I prefer silk, satin and high-quality lace. We use silk pillowcases and bedsheets, and I own plenty of silk clothing.

These days I'm not wearing as much lingerie as I am sweatpants and nursing bras. I appreciate the coolness of pure cotton against my tired skin, oh, and a nice rich lotion to soothe and hydrate.

Other favourites - the touch of a loved one's lips, the velvety soft skin of a baby. Fuzzy baby blankets. Ah, I have the worst baby fever! 🥰🤭

Alternately, I like the feeling of cold metal, like that of a good quality knife, or brand-new jewelry. And for food textures, I love flaky croissants and creamy things, like a fine soft cheese, full-fat yogurt, or my favourite crème brûlée! 😍😋

Textures I do not like? Ah, Je ne sais pas... polyester? Things that are rough and gritty, like unpolished rock. I suppose I have never given much thought to it. I don't really like plastic, we try not to use it around the house. Oh, et Je deteste those starchy hospital gowns!

Arthur: Hello, there. Thank you for the question, that's rather curious. As far as fabrics, I enjoy the feeling of wool and tweed. Especially soft wool, like that I use when I knit for our children. I suppose I second fuzzy baby blankets. They're so darling when they're small, aren't they?

I like the look of felt but it's unpleasant to touch, at least to me. I don't love dirt or sand, so I wear gloves whilst tending to the garden. Nor do I like things that are sticky, though I don't believe many people do.

This may be a given depending what you know of me, but I like old books. The crepe-y paper feeling is oddly satisfying - as is smooth, polished wood, like that of my mahogany desk or cherry-wood pipe.

I quite like the airy, pillowy textures of my wife's homemade whipped cream and fresh sponge cake. I have to mention her cooking, don't I?

Of course I love the touch of François' gorgeous flaxen hair, and his supple skin. Those lavish lips are like rose petals. I must admit, the scratch of his stubble is delightful too. And finally, one of the greatest feelings on earth is the grip of a baby's tiny fist around your finger, it makes my heart swell with fatherly pride.

hi, thanks for the lovely message! i'm happy to share my process for merch - i'm gonna post this publicly in case anyone else wants this info.

for stickers, i order vinyl sticker paper online and use a canon pixma mg3222 (that we inherited from a friend) to print em at home, then add a layer of adhesive laminate.

once theyre laminated i just cut em out with scissors while i watch tv or whatever and then they're done! i really like doing these by hand - they're not as waterproof as vinyl stickers from a professional printer but they look pretty good and are quite water resistant! if i ordered from a company i'd have to order at least 25 or so of each design and the cost would be very high and i would not be able to offer even close to the price i'm selling stickers for currently ahaha - though if you're doing larger runs of few designs bulk ordering is definitely a lot easier.

for prints i've found it more cost- and quality-effective to order prints 5"x7" and smaller from mpix and larger prints from shortrunposters - both online printers that send the prints to me to distribute. the surface texture is quite different between the two but i like them both.

stuff like the species id cards and packaging labels i print at home or get from staples, depending on how quickly i need them. i've gone through professional printers for a few different things in the past, but i've never used drop-shipping so i cant say much about that option, but what kind of printing you use will really depend on your situation - what kinds of things you want to print and how much of an investment you can make upfront in time or money or both.

Hii! Ohh gosh, thank you!!

I guess technically I'm a beginner too since I only started using coloured pencils in May hahah. Up until then I assumed I sucked at it, because I hated using them as a kid, but somehow it felt so natural as soon as I tried again 7 months ago. So I don't know about advice, but I could tell you what I use and what my preferences are!

One of my big issues with coloured pencils as a kid was the constant sharpening.. I hated it. So when I saw coloured mechanical pencil leads in an art supply store, I got very curious. I didn't buy them then, but browsed online and found Uni Nano Dia Color.

I'm sure they are not the best quality, but they are wonderful for me because 1) they are always sharp, 2) the pencil doesn't get shorter, 3) they're erasable. Downside: they weirdly don't have yellow. I did find a different brand, but it's really too light. And it was much more expensive too.. Maybe it's difficult making yellow for mechanical pencils? I just got a regular yellow pencil. (I haven't sharpened it once in 7 months, because I don't use a lot of it, but it /is/ crucial.)

For me personally only having the primary colours + orange and green is perfect. (Edit: my current preferred colour set is blue, yellow, green, magenta and orange - I don't like using red for some reason) I've seen high quality pencils that blend, but mine don't do that. I just layer them. I realise most what I'm telling you is up to personal preference, but (imo) this is the only proper advice. Start with these colours and from there see what colours you're missing, if you're missing any at all.

Besides that I'm very happy with my grey 4B leads for mechanical pencils. It allows me to draw sketches that are dark enough to see clearly, but soft enough to erase if the colour doesn't cover it up. The colour usually covers it up though. And while colouring I use it to make shading a tad darker if necessary.

As for the paper.. I use Eco sea white A5 sketchbook. I have no idea if it's good quality lol, but it works for me! It's important that I keep my drawings together, that it's small and that it has just enough texture. I've used them for years and years!

And what’s especially nice about these is that they come together easily and can be made days ahead, so that when you’re ready, you simply slice, salt and bake. (you can even freeze the dough logs for up to month if you like). Easy-peasy and done!

Chocolate Pistachio Sables

Makes about 3 dozen

Prep Time: 15 minutes; plus several hours of chilling time. Bake Time: 10-12 minutes

Ingredients

2 ½ cups unbleached, all-purpose flour

½ cup natural unsweetened cocoa powder

¾ teaspoon kosher salt

¼ teaspoon baking soda

20 tablespoons (2 ½ sticks) unsalted butter, room temp

1 ¼ cups light brown sugar, lightly packed

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 large egg white

5 ounces good quality bittersweet chocolate, chopped

4. When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350ºF and line a couple of rimmed baking sheets with parchment paper. Sprinkle the tops of the cookies with the sea salt if using.

5. Bake one sheet at a time, reversing the sheet halfway through the baking time, about 10-12 minutes in total.
