just watched the movies again for the first time in a month and i can’t stop thinking about mikey and leo of all things.

look. mikey is the acrobat of the team, right? he’s known for bouncing and flipping around, always on his skateboard. it’s practically eye-roll worthy, how unnecessary some of his flipping is (i say, definitely not charmed to hell by it).

of course, the other brothers are always flipping around too, they’re ninjas after all. but only one of them flips and spins nearly as flamboyantly as mikey does.

every time i watch these movies i’m struck by how showy leo is when he flips around. he’s the leader, he always at least tries to be serious (until he doesn’t, but that’s a leo post and this is about mikey).

mikey has a big-time lack of situational awareness, but he almost always has his finger on the pulses of his brothers. he is always reacting to them.

so mikey sees how leo is acrobatically ostentatious. and leo is his Big Brother. he really strives to be like leo.

i’m sure you’re picking up what i’m saying. and it just makes me so soft, thinking about how much work mikey puts into being like his big bro.

(of course, leo is a daddy’s boy. and have you seen the way splinter flips around? so it’s really a family line, of mikey emulating leo emulating splinter. the deep love and respect they all have for each other is just… it fills a hole in my heart to see it.)

Ayato expects his spouse - his lovely little dress up doll - to match his colours. That means blues and whites and purples. He takes great pleasure in ordering you exquisite kimonos and watching the tailor (or Thoma) wrap the obi up tight, forcing your posture to be perfectly straight, only able to take dainty little steps in your geta when he brings you out to the festival. It's the perfect excuse to be slow, to make sure everyone sees that you are his - and it'll be a joy to unwrap later.

I simply love thinking about how yanderes dress their darlings so so much. ayato, of course, likes you in traditional wear - and so much the better if it restricts you. chains of silk with hours worth of embroidery stitched upon them; an expensive way of ayato saying both ‘you are mine’ to you and ‘I own this’ to anyone looking at you. and oh, the way it forces you to take small steps and keep your pretty chin up . . . you make a man proud to have you on his arm.

he likes to tease you. leave you all dressed up for as long as possible and then peel your clothing back layer by layer - sometimes he even enlists thoma to do the undressing whilst he simply enjoys the show. he’s a patient man - and he wants to get every ounce of pleasure out of your pretty trussed up form as is physically possible.

barbie has made it home to us in one way or another and after finally rewatching it i have a thought i wanted to share. i don’t know if it’s been said before but as we go around barbie land we meet reporter barbie, construction worker barbie, a pilot, astronauts, award winners, a lawyer. every single barbie had an occupation but even more than that, they had a purpose. margot’s barbie was just stereotypical.

her breakdown means more to me now, because she didn’t see her own worth and her own purpose after experiencing humanness and then visiting the real world. and gloria suggesting ordinary barbie means even more to me now. most of us aren’t extraordinary. we may contribute to the world in ways that feel meaningless-like me, in food/customer service.

but our worth comes from what we give to other people.

barbie woke up everyday, said hello to her friends, gave a smile to everyone, and was an active member of her community. she supported every single barbie. and every other barbie that was “extraordinary” didn’t view her as less than for being “ordinary”. they loved her all the same, and extended her the same love and support and friendship.

i say all this to say, your worth doesn’t come from making a big change in the world or winning awards or being extraordinary. your worth comes from the love and support you give your fellow humans and the friendships you create. that’s where you find meaning and purpose.
