a handful of chinese songs that give me big robit energy

translating cpop songs is like my second favourite hobby so it's frankly surprising I haven't made this post sooner

Him - Floruitshow (马 - 福禄寿)

I've talked about this song on here before but this is the 3.7 song for me

the second chorus is definitely MR-SN but i like to think of the first chorus (Let me take a good look at your visage as we count down the time till the curtains’ close. Forgive me for holding back my voice so soon, do you know, in your graceful escape, all I see around me is disaster?) as VR-LA during the flashback sequence

specifically 'all I see around me is disaster' because yeah not wrong

'This time I’m not here to bring you home' just kills me like the please please take care of yourself because I can't be there with you anymore of it all

'Oh spring, oh warm sun, please come sooner, grant him a smooth and safe journey' same point, just the desperate plea for the universe to protect VR-LA because he can't do it himself anymore

specifically the second verse feels a lot like Maxim waiting for VR-LA to return from Tu'narath

the bridge (?) as a conversation between VR-LA and Maxim, VR-LA inviting Maxim to see the beauty and wonders of the world ('Do you want to see the sea of flowers blooming?', very 4.5 wedding invite honestly) but Maxim's trauma just would not allow him to take that risk ('If none of them come back, then who should I live for?')

fun fact the second version of the bridge in my translation ('You must stay to see the flowers bloom' onwards) is exclusive to that live performance of the song so it's not in the spotify version i linked here. as for which version you think fits Maxim more.. well.

Borrow - Mao Buyi (借 - 毛不易)

finally banging out a translation for this song was kinda the inspiration for me to make this post actually

the tldr of this song is that it's an unnamed/unidentified speaker asking to borrow various small things for the sake of somebody else (like 'an inch of frozen sunlight' to provide warmth in a cold world) so you can probably see where i'm going with this

'A simple ‘we have plenty of time’ etched into the soul to prepare for the chance of forced separation' ouch ow okay

idk if anyone has done this yet but I just wanted to share close-ups of each of the custom signs Richas, Pomme and Bad made, with individual alt-text descriptions (the descriptions are a bit subjective but I wanted to make them as vivid as I could because I feel like these designs deserve that)

I might include my own feedback in a reblog, to get extra subjective, but the main gist of it would be that these are super cute and much much easier to read.

Note that these are not the final designs! Richas, Pomme and Bad said they're still working on them and asking for feedback, especially in regards to the accessibility aspect.

The same descriptions under a cut, just in case the alt-text doesn't work for some reason:

Pomme's custom canvas sign on a wall. This will be the most detailed description since it's the first: The sign has a wooden frame that surrounds a red canvas. The canvas has a very subtle patchwork like texture and is slightly darker on the edges than in the middle. The text is a slightly transparent white (effectively beige) and reads Pomme in all caps.

The custom texture pack version is a much darker shade of red, which makes the contrast between the text and the background much bigger and thus the text much more readable. The frame is also decorated with a little French flag in the bottom left corner and tree branches with green leaves and apples on the right. The leaves and apples overlap the canvas portion slightly. The overall vibe is very classy and makes you think of a roadsign advertising a French vineyard. Or I guess more like an orchard in this case.

Sunny's custom sign: The colour is a much softer and lighter orange than before, almost more like a warm yellow. The text is black like in all the lighter coloured signs. The frame is decorated with sparkly blue diamonds, a small diamond shaped one in the lower left corner with sparkles almost as big as itself, and one big one in the lower right corner which is in the princess cut shape. The general vibe is like a pre-teen girl's notebook decorated with glittery stickers.

Chayanne's custom sign: The colour is a very soft and pale lemon yellow. The frame is covered in subtle vines on the top and the bottom. In the lower left corner there's a small orange pumpkin among the vines, and in the lower right corner there's a little yellow rubber duckie, also partially covered in vines, which does blend into the background a little bit where it overlaps the yellow canvas. The vibe is very cottagecore but also very childlike, this could be a sign for some kind of family vacation location with cabins and gardens.

Tallulah's custom sign: The colour is medium pink, somewhere between her original pink signs (now used by Pepito) and her current magenta signs. Clearly lighter than the latter, but darker than the former. The frame is decorated with poppies in the lower right corner, and some kind of blue flower, maybe a blue lily, on the lower left corner. One of the blue flowers also sort of peeks into the frame on the right between the poppies, right in the corner. The flowers are of course framed by their leaves, which reach out towards the middle around them. This definitely has the vibe of a sign for a flower garden, probably one maintained by a little old lady who loves pink.

Richarlyson's custom sign: The colour is a deeper indigo blue than his original signs, like deep blue denim. The text colour is the same light beige as Pomme's signs and as all the darker coloured signs. The frame is decorated with a tiny Brazilian flag in the lower right corner, and red-cap mushrooms in the lower left corner. The mushrooms seem to be releasing little white spores into the air, some of which can be seen in the top right corner as well. I can't quite pin down the vibe. There's something a bit fairy tale like, like a storybook maybe. You half expect a little troll creature to show up. But also… random Brazilian flag I guess lol

Empanada's custom sign: The colour seems to be the same soft beige as before, I can't tell if it has changed at all. The frame is covered in golden syrup in the top left corner, which spreads out all over that side of the sign, dripping down in big goopy clumps. It looks delicious and I don't even care that much for syrup. The lower right corner across from it is decorated with white flowers, maybe white cherry blossoms? The flowers are stemless and leafless, just the flower floating over the frame and the canvas. One big one and one small one. There seem to also be small petals floating in the other two corners of the sign, over the canvas. One petal is even floating on the syrup where it drips down on the left. This would definitely be a sign for a small independent bakery.

Ramón's custom sign: The colour is the same white as always, I don't think it has changed at all. The frame is very simply decorated with copper-coloured gears in the lower left and lower right corners, with one particularly big gear on the right side. It doesn't bring any particular vibes to mind but it is cute. The gears look very shiny and it fits Ramón very well. I guess the thing that it most reminds me of is actually Ramón's elevator shaft with its white walls and coppery create machinery.

Dapper's custom sign: The colour is a darker grey than usual, I would honestly call it black rather than grey. The lower edge of the frame is decorated with what looks like darkened blotches of blood, with white ghostly spirits rising out of them towards the left and right edges of the sign, framing the canvas and partially overlapping it. The ghosts are similar to the souls that rise from soulsand in Minecraft but whiter, with only a hint of blue. The vibe is very Halloweeny of course.

Leonarda's custom sign: The colour is a much deeper purple than before, you could even say a more royal purple. In the lower right corner there's a beautiful sparkly cluster of amethysts which are a lighter pinkish lilac colour and which look absolutely gorgeous, just masterful pixel art crystals. There is an amazing sense of depth and transparency in such a minimal resolution. There are also some pinkish sparkles in the lower left corner to balance out the composition a little bit. I don't know how to describe the vibes but it's beautiful. It's like a much classier version of Sunny's sign (not an insult to Sunny's sign, just a neutral description. It's like the cliché of the nouveau riche versus old money. Sunny's gems make you think of glitter stickers, Leo's look like she just happened to place the sign next to an actual cluster of amethysts with perfect artistic composition. Or maybe like she hired a professional painter to decorate each sign.)

(Okay sorry for the rambling, I just can't get over how pretty these amethysts are. Sunny's diamonds are also very pretty but they do look more like stickers to me)

10:

Pepito's custom sign: I think the colour is a softer and lighter pink than the original, it looks like freshly washed baby clothes. The sign is decorated with a tub of popcorn in the lower right corner, with the classic red-and-white design, which sits partly on the frame but mostly overlaps the canvas. Some popcorn seems to have fallen out and is scattered across the lower edge of the sign. There's also a stripe of alternating red and white on the right (over the edge of the canvas rather than on top of the frame itself) which vaguely makes me think of film reel, probably because of the popcorn. I should note that the white and red on both the tub and the "film" are a bit desaturated and dark, technically the white is more like light grey, which gives an effect of shadow and contrast compared to the very light pink canvas which looks very cool. There's also some subtle white flakes across the sides of the canvas; I'm not sure what they're meant to represent. They're very similar to Empanada's petals. The overall effect of the sign is very retro to me. It makes me think of the sixties.

11:

Gegg's custom sign: The colour is a softer version of the lime green of the original sign, and slightly lighter. The canvas is decorated with a little Gegg pixel art sitting in the lower right corner. Otherwise the sign is undecorated, but there's a subtle effect on the canvas itself that makes it look a bit goopier, like there's a thin film of slime over it. And there's a tiny reflection of light in the upper left corner which adds to the wet look. It's very subtle though, it could very easily be missed if you didn't look at the sign closely. The overall vibe is: Gegg

Qifrey does not want Olruggio to know about both his failing eyesight and his goals, so he ends up completely wiping Olruggio's memory of those things, and laments that Olruggio is a kind person, and one who would most likely forgive him again, but also one who would try to save him, even when he didn't want to be saved. He also apologized right up until the moment Olruggio's memories of his secret were gone. In general I think chapter 40 is the somewhat toxic guy yuri chapter ever. I'm very tired so I do not know how to explain any of this, I just thought "wow Orufrey reminds me of this one poll I saw on Tumblr" and then spent three days straight hunting for your blog before completely forgetting my reasoning for Orufrey being yuri right before I submitted this."

For Joongdok: "Well first of all Yoo Joonghyuk has a whole arc that is transfem coded as hell (has a power/technique that can technically only be used by women but somehow he can also use it, for a time he even turns into a woman to wield it and it's. Actually just let me get the quote "The ines of the face had changed but it was clearly Yoo Joonghyuk. No, it was even more than before.") that just kinda happens,, and doesn't get brought up again but anyway. Second of all just look at them. You see the vision. Also a bonus observation is that these two often get shipped in a poly ship with Han Sooyoung and whenever I see people make a "regular couple, yaoi couple, yuri couple, I see no difference love is love" meme with them the combination of which pair among these three is which of the categories is always different"

“Lady Alicent, you’re going to turn them into stubs,” you scolded softly before gently pulling Alicent’s bitten, bloody fingers from her mouth. It was a bad habit that she couldn’t seem to shake even as she advanced in her years. Soft tear tracks decorated her face as she gave a pathetic sniffle.

You had been in her service for the past three years since she flowered, pushed into the role by your sister, Mysaria. She had not wished for you to serve in her pleasure house, and her paramour, Prince Daemon, had helped to secure your role. You tended to Rhaenyra at times, but she was closer to Alicent, and you had a long-standing softness for the young Lady Hightower. However, you had never trusted the leech of a man who was her father. You noticed that he was always plotting and scheming, snaking his poison and agenda into the King’s ear.

“What troubles you?” you asked Lady Alicent while moving behind her to unlace her gown, sliding the beautiful blue silk off her slender frame.

“I am to marry King Viserys,” she warbled, voice heavy and laced with tears. She oft trusted you with her secrets; there was no reason for her to be wary now. ‘Twas a relief for her to have a confidant, you imagined, especially one whose motives were pure, as you liked to think yours were.

Your eyes widened as you continued your duties, dressing her in a soft nightgown of cream silk. “Does the Princess know?” you asked. Ah, yes, you thought to yourself, this was her father’s doing. There was no doubt in your mind that the snake had slithered the idea into the King’s head and positioned Alicent as the pawn.

Your sister was right; men used women as toys for their agendas. But, a lady could stil turn the tables… if she were clever enough.

“She does, and I suspect she hates me for it. I don’t have a choice,” she sniffled before you guided her to sit, slowly loosening her hair to gently comb out her beautiful auburn curls.

“It may not seem so, my Lady, but there is always a choice,” you offered. You lifted your gaze to meet her eyes through the reflection of the looking glass.

“How? It is done. It will happen within the turn of the moon, and preparations are already being made.”

You set the silver brush down before kneeling in front of her, drawing her blood-flecked hands into your own. “Tell me the truth, my Lady, do you wish to marry the King?”

Her lower lip wobbled as she pondered the question. “No.”

“Are you willing to leave this life behind? To say goodbye to it all?”

Her warm, brown eyes reminded you of a kitten pleading for a saucer of cream. Almost heartbreaking, in a way. You could see, in that moment, how trapped and scared she truly was.

“Rhaenyra will want nothing to do with me. This is silly! Foolish thoughts we need not discuss,” she huffed as she avoided answering your question.

“My Lady, you did not answer me.”

“I have known nothing else. How do I leave it all behind?” she whispered before glancing down at her nibbled fingers.

“‘Tis a scary notion, but my sister and I did such, left our home behind and came here, started anew,” you offered as your hands closed around hers.

“And where would we go?” she asked curiously, lifting her gaze to meet yours.

“I will figure that out. To the Free Cities, mayhaps. Once we flee on water it will be hard to track us. My sister has many friends, and I know she will gladly assist. But, only if that’s what you want, my Lady.”

A heavy silence fell across the room as the candles flickered, casting soft, muted golden shadows along the walls.

“I want…. you to call me Alicent,” she offered, giving you a little smile as she wrestled with the heavier decision.

“In private, I shall do so,” you chuckled.

“Would you…. truly be able to help me escape? If I said yes?”

“I would.” Mysaria would not be happy, but you were certain Daemon could convince her. He wouldn’t want a Hightower marrying his brother.

Before the moon turned full, you were squished next to Alicent, each concealed in soft cloaks of gray on a ship headed for the Free Cities. You had endured Mysaria’s harsh scolding in your native tongue while Daemon chuckled with his feet propped on the table, but in the end, they agreed to help. It would be a lengthy trip with adventures along the way, but one you were looking forward to. The days passed, bringing you and Alicent closer together. You would hold her when she turned greensick, petting her curls and using ground ginger brewed with tea to calm her stomach. On the nights when sleep was hard to find, she would place your head in her lap and tell you the many tales she had learned when she and Rhaenyra were younger. You wondered if the beautiful princess missed either of you. You believed she would be in good hands with Daemon looking after her.

You both enjoyed many sights along the long, tumultuous journey, and you loved to see Alicent’s eyes light up at the world that lay beyond Westeros. A few days were spent in Myr, where Alicent was taken with the beautifully crafted glass and fine lace. She had always possessed a gift for sewing, and she took some with her on the ship, using her needle and thread to craft delicate lace small clothes to pass along the time. You, on the other hand, loved Tyrosh, even if it was filled with greedy men. The bright colors, silks, and delicious pear brandy made it exciting to you. It was there that you shared your first kiss with Alicent, her sweet lips pressed gently against yours. Many would soon follow.

“Do you think Lys is a good place for us?” Alicent asked, standing next to you on port side, hands on the wooden railing, while looking out at the dark waves of the night sea.

“No one will think to look for us there,” you replied. “My sister has already arranged a little house for us, by the sea.” You smiled.

“That sounds lovely, however, aren’t Lyseni women….”

“Many are known for their skills and services in the pleasure house, but delicious wine is made there and tapestries, and the most wonderful perfume. I remember it a bit. Mysaria and I lived there before she found Prince Daemon. We will figure out what to do,” you assured her.

“I know we will,” she smiled. Your arms slipped around her waist to pull her closer before you kissed her under the soft light of the moon, pressing your forehead against hers. The salt of the sea energized you; eager to start your new life with Alicent.

After the passing of another day, you finally stood on the warm shores of Lys with Alicent’s hand in your own. The kiss of the sun was bright and welcoming as you tracked down your sister’s contact and spies, Yejena, at the large pleasure house dubbed the Silver Cat, which was known for its many courtesans with silver hair and purple eyes. Valyrian blood had long dominated the city of Lys, and its markings were more common here than in Westeros. Your mother had been Lyseni, and you could still remember her lilac eyes before the fever took her. However, you and Mysaria had inherited your coloring from your father, who had hailed from the shores of Yi-Ti.

“I thought I was looking at your sister, back in her younger days. She was a beauty,” Yejena grinned as she came down to the door, long silver hair falling freely over her shoulders. She had a sparkle in her eyes; a woman who knew many secrets.

You exchanged a warm hug before introducing her to Alicent. “Very beautiful, such hair is not seen on these shores,” she hummed as she stroked an auburn curl. “Come, let me show you to your house. It is not very big, but it will do for now. If you need work, you know where to find me.”

Alicent’s eyes widened, but you gently nudged her. This was a different place, and these skills were not looked down upon here. It was indeed a small house made of smooth stones, but it would do, and it overlooked the glittering sea.

“Very beautiful,” Alicent whispered, wrapping her arms around you.

Many moons and years passed in your little cottage by the sea. You loved to fish in the hot afternoon sun as it kissed your skin, making it a beautiful bronze and leaving freckles behind. Alicent preferred to stay in the cooler shade of the cottage as she sewed her clothing by the wooden buckets that contained dazzling dyes in shades of purples, blues, greens, oranges, and reds. She had become well known for the gowns she made and traded, dressing most of the noble and pleasure ladies of Lys, along with some of the men as well. But she was no longer Lady Alicent Hightower; now she was simply known as Ali, and she always had a smile on her face.

“Caught some big ones for supper,” you grinned as you came inside with two fresh fish. You put them aside on the wooden counter before bending down to kiss her. Her lips tasted of sugar from the sweet marzipan and almond cookies she loved to nibble on while sewing. Those who couldn’t pay coin traded other items for their clothing. You walked over to the buckets of dye, pulling out the tinted silks and hanging them up to dry as you watched the colorful drops pitter-patter onto the floor. Then, you went to tend to the fish. All the manual labor had made your arms strong, making it easier to scoop Alicent into them, even if the two of you were similar in stature. There were still times when she was your dainty little lady.

After full bellies and a few cups of wine, you and Ali sat on the beach, breeches (dresses only worn for special occasions now) rolled to mid-calf as the cerulean waves lapped at your feet. You loved how the setting sun caught in the red curls of her hair, making it appear to be set on fire. Your fingers laced together with hers.

“Do you miss it?” you asked softly. Her nose crinkled as she shook her head.

“In the beginning I did, but not anymore,” she admitted.

“No regrets in not becoming a Queen?”

“None, I’d rather be here with you.”

Her lips pressed against yours, slow and sweet, before she took more control. Passion seared through you as she claimed your mouth hungrily while your tongues tangled together. Your fingers slipped through her dazzling red locks. This was true happiness and pure love.

We’ll grow old together by the beautiful sea, you thought.

A New Look?

Alternative title: What I would give genshin guys to wear

Basically Reverse isekai but now you gotta make normal outfits for the characters so they don't stick out like a sore thumb. It can also be read as modern AU outfits if you prefer

Characters in order:

Heizou, Xiao, Albedo, Zhongli, Wanderer, Kaeya, Venti, Ayato, Diluc, Kazuha

Honestly heizou would be an easy pick. Old fashioned British detective style. Sherlock Holmes, trench coats, shades of brown, all that jazz. Also, give him access to true crime podcasts, he'll never be bored again.

I'd give xiao the ol' hot topic skater fit. Black, band tees, lots of rings and jewelry, fake pieces, ripped jeans, yeaa. It matches his personality too. Not with fashion but if you do get band t shirts tell him alot about said band just incase one of those "name five members or your not a true fan" people talk to him.

Albedo gets the light academia scholar outfits. Kinda chill, collared shirts, lighter colors, shades of brown and blue. Some gold every once in a while. Loose fitting stuff. Flowy sleeves. Lots of rings. Maybe one or two gold necklaces that he wears every once in a while. The type of outfits you see those aesthetic college student wearing. Maybe a bit of cottagecore. Lots of white shirts.

Zhongli would look like that one professor that everybody has a crush on tbh. Not as formal as what he wears in game but still, collared shirts, suits once in a while, always wears a tie, owns one dark brown trench coat that he wears everywhere at all costs. Lots of darker browns with gold accents here and there. Not a necklace kinda guy but wears a good amount of rings. Totally has reading glasses. Has alot of custom hair pins for some reason? Idk I just feel like he does. Has 100 pairs of dress shoes, and like one pair of black boots. Nothing else. Also If you give him his own closet it's so organized. Spotless, everything fits in the closet right, its honestly impressive.

Wanderer would be alot like Xiao. Hot topic's no. 1 customer. He'd have more of a blue and purple color scheme than black though. Actually listens to all the bands he has shirts of. Big punk fan. Wears this one black beanie with a skull on it basically every day. His shoe game is good, like really good. Had alot of platform shoes so he can look taller. Lots of cropped shirts that looked ripped. No long sleeves, short sleeves and sleeveless tees. An absolute MASTER at makeup, specifically eyeliner. Lotsssss of turtlenecks.

Ooohoho now Kaeya would be f u n to style. Has a more simple style. Those pinterest dudes?? Yeah, think of that. Plain colored shirts, turtlenecks alot, almost never sleeveless. Lots of long sleeves stuff.

Give him one of those black corsets that I always see, since he wears one on his original outfit. Wears necklaces, but doesnt layer them or anything. One simple necklace at a time. A TON of silver rings. Hes got those pinterest guy hands. Wears sheer black gloves. Has this one cropped blue jacket but it's more of a sweater and he always wears it when layering clothing.

Hanging earrings are necessary for him. Has a belt with a snowflake design on it that he uses alot. Almost never wears sweaters. Wears blue, grey, and black almost religiously.

Ahhh venti :) Think similar to albedos but more Victorian than college student vibes. Again, long sleeves, flowy, lotssss of ruffles, has a generous amount of green accents. Has this one emerald necklace that resembles a vision somewhat and he adores it. Never takes it off. Not a giant ring person, but has around a thousand hats. Paper boy hats in green, might own a bucket hat or two? Hes got the whole hat-universe. Always wear white socks that go just below his knees with EVERYTHING. Has multiple pairs and some are a bit more sheer than the others. Has a pair or two of white fingerless gloves to wear with long sleeves, and full, white and sheer gloves he wears when he isnt wearing long sleeves. White button ups are his life. Usually doesnt tuck said button ups in. (Totally not a walking mitski reference)

Ayato isnt THAT complex. And he's got similar style to Zhongli, but complety different color schemes. Wears suits often, and they follow a pattern. White shirt, black tie, light blue suit jacket. The icon of white pants, he basically never wears anything else. For smaller accessories they're usually dark blue or black in color. Not a ring person either, but wears one or two black rings occasionally. Has earrings but not dangly ones. Just black studs. Has alot of dark blue hair pins to keep his hair back. Theres no way his hair naturally just stays that way ok?? Every single boba place within 40 miles knows his name and face by memory. Wears the same looking black shoes all the time.

Diluc is probably another trench coat kinda guy. Less suits, more trench coats for him. In the fancy looking suit and tie gang with Ayato and Zhongli. Usually wears black button ups instead of white ones, with a crimson red tie and a brown trench coat, or a white tie and a darker red coat. Totally not an accessories guy. No necklaces, earrings, and maybe just one single gold rings he wears once every century. Another black shoes only person. I feel like the coats he wear have some fur on them in places. Just a thought. Always carries around like 3 extra hair ties in his pocket just in case he need one.

Kazuha is a comfy clothing icon. Not one for a thousand things on his outfits for aesthetic purposes, just wears what he likes and adds accessories if he feels like it. And absolute king of the fall outfit aesthetic. Outfits usually consists of slightly baggy autumn colored shirts, always short sleeves. Sweatpants or just light colored/bleached cuffed jeans. (Yes I said CUFFED) And occasionally has a darker colored orange and red knit sweater over him. Probably has one or two necklaces on at a time. Always wears this one necklace with a gold chain and a maple leaf charm on it. A gold colored accessories person. Most of the rings he has are gold. Has his ears pierced and usually wears black or gold studs. Sonetimes he wears dangly earrings but nothing to crazy. Ties his hair back a lot less.

Hey, I loved Anne. What LM Montgomery book should I read next?

It's no secret that Anne of Green Gables is far and away LM Montgomery's most famous book. It's the classic; the book you think of when you heard the name LM Montgomery. It's her stereotypical Barbie, if you will. Even if someone has read a book other than Green Gables, it's usually the subsequent books in Anne's series (which is absolutely the right choice). Consequently, diving into the rest of LM Montgomery's work can be overwhelming. There are quite a few series of young women coming into their own, some of which are on Anne's level, and some of which aren't. Even beyond the Emilys and the Pats, there are also books that don't quite fit the mold of Singular Young Heroine Faces Life - The Story Girl features a much broader cast and scope despite its featured heroine Sara.

Because I love LM Montgomery and will talk about her at any point, I wanted to write up a brief summary of her series other than Anne and just try to express their vibes for someone who might be curious as to where to go next. Someone who loves Anne might hate Pat (who, me?), and someone who was tepid on Anne might love Emily. Of course, LM Montgomery is LM Montgomery, so her stories are usually solid regardless - but hey, sometimes you want an eerily witchy story, and sometimes you want a warm and cozy one. Disclaimer that I'm not including LMM's entire canon of work here (ie poems and short stories).

So, with that, let's get started.

Emily of New Moon (3 books)

Did you read the Anne series and think it was a little...Pollyanna-ish? Perhaps you even whipped out that dreaded word, "saccharine." Or maybe you loved it, but you're curious as to what a darker LM Montgomery would be. Say no more. Emily is a gothic, witchy series, with dark undertones of resentment and depression. It's also blatantly autobiographical - like, really, autobiographical - like, LM Montgomery straight up copied passages from her diary into the book autobiographical! The storyline overall does differ from LM Montgomery's life, but Emily dreams of being a writer much like Anne while being much sharper than Anne. It's also more eerie - there are hauntings and second sight events sprinkled throughout the series, along with the aforementioned gothic undertones overall. Yet for all this, it still solidly retains LM Montgomery's flair for cheeky stories and dreamy heroines and embarrassing moments and gentle life lessons. It's a still slice of life; it's just a slice of a darker one.

The Blue Castle (1 book)

Imagine the most generic, trope filled, basic romantic storyline - shy girl gets makeover esque - and then pump it full of LM Montgomery's genius, add in a few screwball twists for the fun of it, and create the most cathartic book ever written. Have a family you can't stand that you just want to tell off sometimes? This book is for you. Want to live that cottagecore life with your soulmate? This book is for you. Daydream of a better life? This book is for you. Love a book with plot twists that you never see coming? Oh boy, this book is for you. This is one of two novels that LM Montgomery writes for adults, and it shows in the material handled. We have unwed mothers, hints at sexual awakenings, sexual harassment, and overall LM Montgomery from an older perspective. The heroine here is 29 at the beginning of the book, an unusual age for an LM Montgomery story to begin. Also, Barney Snaith supremacy. If you loved Gilbert, you'll love Barney too (dare I say perhaps even more). The blue castle is one of LMM's few books where the love interest is one of the main characters too instead of a side plot. It's also a standalone novel, which makes it more accessible in terms of storyline.

Jane of Lantern Hill (1 book)

Lo and behold, another standalone novel! And in my opinion, LM Montgomery's best. Notable for having an actual lion in it (that was based on true events!), Jane of Lantern Hill is a cheerful story of a little girl coming into her own. More practical than the other heroines (Jane is the same girl who dreams of having a potato ricer), Jane stands in a very cozy story that has a parent trap type plot (no trapping involved, but long estranged parents do reunite). It also has one of LM Montgomery's best villains, Jane's Grandmother, who is a chilling example of emotional abuse without any buffoonery or comedy to soften it. If you're looking for a comfort book to read with a cup of tea on a rainy day, this is it. It's not really a romance - romance is the tiniest of plot threads in this - it's a father daughter story bestowed with the typical LM Montgomery magic.

The Story Girl (2 books)

This was LM Montgomery's personal favorite, and it's delightful. It features more of a cast of characters than a main heroine situation, although the main heroine is there, so it's a bit unique in that regard. It's also in first person, and (gasp) that person is a boy. That sets it very apart from her other novels! The Story Girl, as hinted by the name, is very story heavy; it's LM Montgomery telling the story of a crowd of children growing up on PEI, yes, but it's also her delving into fairy tales and urban legends (PEI style) and local history. If you really liked the Hester Gray chapters from Anne, you'll probably like this quite a bit; the novel takes the same sort of delving approach but with a broader focus (we hear stories of princes and stories of neighbors). It also, unlike her other novels, is a memory. Bev, our narrator, is a grown man recounting his childhood - something acknowledged in the first book and emphasized in the second. Without any romance in it (besides of course, in the stories) and with a broader character focus (Sara is our heroine, but she's one of a group, and not the narrator), this novel veers away from the typical tightly focused LM Montgomery coming of age formula. It's group shenanigans rather than a personal journey.

Pat of Silver Bush (2 books)

Ah, Pat. Oh, Pat. I suggest reading these after you read the rest of LM Montgomery's work. Pat is interesting because the narrative tells us one thing, and Pat's actions tell us another. It's a book to read and analyze as an LM Montgomery novel, in my opinion, rather than a book to read to enjoy. It's good - it features one of my favorite LM Montgomery heroes in Jingle - but Pat is frenetic and depressed, to the point the novel's attempted cheerfulness skitters into mania. It's an LM Montgomery that doesn't stick the landing, which makes where it does land all the more interesting. LM Montgomery loves characterizing houses - in this the house is a character to the point where it's almost ominous. It's LM Montgomery but with an unintentional offkey chord that makes for unpleasant reading but fascinating examination.

Rilla of Ingleside (1 book, from Anne's series)

Including this because she's technically a different heroine than Anne - this is a war novel. It's LM Montgomery, but it's also a war novel. It's Anne, and it's a heartbroken Anne. It's also LM Montgomery's magnum opus (at least in my humble opinion). It's gritty in a way all of LM Montgomery's books aren't; it's an account of WWI from a unique perspective of a girl on PEI (and account is the word for it - there's discussion of specific battles and events date by date). The theme of WWI pops up frequently in LM Montgomery's later books, all of them building up to this book - read it and you'll appreciate the beginning Anne books all the more, because you know where they end.

The Blythes are Quoted (1 book, from Anne's series)

Do you really, really want more Anne? You've read all the books multiple times, hunted down the short stories where she's referenced, and you still want more? You're in luck, because this book was published in 2009, over half a century after LM Montgomery died. It's full of short stories that offer glimpses of the Blythes growing up, but it also has stories that take place after WWI, and it has interludes with the Blythe family written in a script format (think reading a play). It's cutting - these are not happy interludes - but it adds a rich dimension to Anne's story, and gives another glimpse at what happened to the characters.

Other

There are a scattering of other novels - Magic for Marigold, A Tangled Web - along with hundreds of short stories. I'd save these for last. These vary wildly in quality and so you're as likely to hit a dud as a diamond in the rough. There are a few incredible short stories that are LM Montgomery at her best, but there's also quite a lot of odd ones that can get downright uncomfortable. Magic for Marigold and A Tangled Web hit the same issues, growing uncomfortably sexist/racist at points. If you are determined to read all of LM Montgomery's work (hey, I've been there), these are solid stories but there are better ones.

I think scar wears skirts and dresses just as often as he wears pants. Idk he just gives that vibe

Scar doesn't read books often but he loves those bird identifying/tree identifying/flower identifying books. If you give him the chance he will correctly identify every flower in a 50 block radius

I FEEL LIKE SCAR WOULD HAVE SO MANY MISCELLANIOUS HOBBIES... he'd see one thing and go 'oh that looks cool' and then just keep trying at it until he's actually pretty good. He's very resilient in the way that he's not afraid to be bad at something new, and when he fails he laughs along with everyone else because he truly believes that it's better to laugh about these things......

In the same category of idea, scar would learn a bunch of these hobbies/skills from other hermits. Like cleo teaches him sewing and puppetry, gem teaches him different braids- I can't think of others right now but I could probably go through the list of hermits and come up with some more lmao

With the exception of. Redstone. (Sorry scar I can't give you that one) I think scars a jack of all trades with a bunch of miscellaneous skills. Terraforming and building he excell at, but we all know that one already

I also think he wouldn't feel the need to tell anyone about his wide variety of skills. So in the once in a life time situation where someone's looking for something with, embroidery or something, scar goes 'oh I can do that !!' And everyone's like hwuh

cottagecore vibes for thorn, plus i removed her thorny bra thing and gave her accessories based on the flowers in her cabin instead :) she keeps her tail from when she's the witch and i don't think i included it here but she has cat pupils

i think prisoner would wear simple but elegant clothing, and i gave her loose-fitting clothes to represent her newfound lack of restraints. i don't know if i like her outfit that much though so i might redesign her later

i was intentional with who keeps their crown and who doesn't:

thorn and prisoner don't because they overall had pretty bad experiences with their "roles" in the construct,

gallant does because he for the most part embraced his role in chapter 2 as the one in need of rescuing and got a happy ending as a result (although he hopefully will gain more to his identity outside of being a "damsel in distress" and making the protagonist happy after the ending, his transition being one step forward in that),

nightmare replaced her crown with a different one because she tried to embrace her role as a fear-bringing monster, and put up a persona of being just that when in reality she was much lonlier than she let on and only ever wanted to leave the cabin :( and anyway she should get to wear cute dresses and a matching tiara. as a treat

it's less of a clear-cut metaphor and just who i think would want to leave their experiences in the construct in the past and who would cling onto it

For people who are beginning to suffer from media exhaustion, don't be afraid to block the tags of your favorite character for a while.

Over saturation is REAL, and if you're finding yourself increasingly agitated by the amount or type of content you're seeing, it's okay to take a break!

You can even pause on your main blog and create a second one, start following blogs and tags that are completely unrelated. Things like cottagecore, cats, pretty nature scenes work for me but you just think about the things that bring calm and look at that for a few days/week.

Right now, with Baldurs Gate 3 in particular, tumblr has really exploded with tons of amazing content! With that comes a wide variety of interpretations of characters, some of which may exhaust you if you don't vibe with it. There's always the desire to keep hunting through tags to find things you *do* like, but it can become harder and harder to glaze over content that begins to upset or overwhelm you.

Taking a break is not only okay, but highly recommended! Play a different video game, or maybe even play your BG3 game and move to different areas of tumblr for a bit. Start a new tiktok and only follow unrelated tags. You can ALWAYS come back.

Take care of your mental health first. It's always perceived as negative when someone says "go touch grass" and I kinda hate that because you know what makes me feel better when I'm overwhelmed? Being in the garden or laying in the grass. Going outside. And the digital/hobby version of that is taking a break to indulge in something else (even something you're not as passionate about or interested in) until you can regulate your nervous system and be ready to come back.

I’m a slowburn girlie like you’re a slowburn girlie. Any book recs?! Just getting back into reading again 🤓 Actually obsessed with sitq and need something so I’m not focusing on when the next update will come 💀

Okay here are some of my favorites from the last couple years:

I always recommend Throne of Glass. A lot of people say to start with ACOTAR if you’re going to read Sarah J. Maas but I think TOG is her most consistent in terms of plot and characterization. And it’s completed

The Coven and The Cursed by Harper L. Woods. The villain love interest stays a villain the entire time and he’s SO HOT. It’s a completed duology but it’s set up for more books with other couples in the same world (editing this to say I read these as indies last year but they’ve been picked up by a publisher since. I don’t think you can get physical copies right now but they do seem to still be on KU)

Assistant to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer is cute and fun! Slow burn and pretty light-hearted, but it is only the first book of a series and the next comes out later this year

If you like contemporary romance (slight paranormal themes) then The Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston broke my heart and put it back together several times. One of my favorite books of all time. But it does deal pretty heavily with themes of parental loss and grief if that’s not your jam

One Dark Window/Two Twisted Crowns by Rachel Gillig. Very little spice but it’s a fascinating world and magic system and I loved it way more than I expected to!

Similar vibes to the above, For the Wolf and For the Throne by Hannah Whitten. Cottagecore but make it bloody (I also recommend The Foxglove King by her, but it’s only the first in an incomplete trilogy)

The Serpent and the Wings of Night and The Ashes and the Star-cursed King by Carissa Broadbent. Enemies to lovers to enemies to lovers. There’s sexy blood drinking. If you want more than that I can’t help you

Okay I’m going to bitch about the Fraggle Rock reboot and how much I hate the way the redesigned Mokey

DISCLAIMER: if you like or even live the reboot, that’s so so valid and I love that for you. I’m not here to tell you what and what not to enjoy. Love what you love. Live your best life

That being said

and can’t stand the reboot’s redesign of Mokey. Now, I haven’t seen the reboot, and I don’t plan too. But there’s just one thing that makes me fucking furious, and that’s Mokey’s redesign.

I hate it.

“But Zeke, “hate” is a strong word, you can’t find it that bad can you?”

I can and I will. as far as I’m concerned, that isn’t Mokey. Mokey would NEVER look like that. NEVER.

this redesign doesn’t even look like her! If I didn’t know better I’d think it was a completely different character! They took everything I loved about Mokey and ruined it

The colors are the most egregious to me. They took Mokey’s soft pastel colors and cranked up the saturation. And they don’t even look good together, they aren’t even appealing.

and like. She doesn’t even fit in with her friends anymore, she sticks out like a sore thumb. OG Mokey fit right in, but Reboot Mokey just doesn’t. She feels like she’s from a different show.

AND NO ONE ELSE GOT REDESIGNED, SO WHY DID MOKEY??? HER DESIGN WAS JUST FINE

secondly they gave her a dress and that makes me want to maim someone. I LIKED HER WIZARD CARDIGAN. SHE LOOKED NONBINARY AND AS A NONBINARY PERSON I LIKED THAT A LOT. It’s like they gave her a dress to say “look she’s a girl. Because girls wear dresses. And so she has to wear one”. I know Nonbinary people can wear dresses but it just feels weird to me as a nonbinary person who relates a lot to Mokey and gets dysphoria from dresses.

also they took away the stoned wizard vibe of the og and made her look like a TikTok white girl and I HATE IT. Mokey is a stoner wizard, not a TikTok girl.

and if you look at the redesign you would never in a million years guess what her personality was supposed to be. She looks like a peppy cottagecore type, not her actual dreamy artist with an egotistical streak. And that’s bad character design imo. You can tell everyone’s personality by looking at them EXCEPT FOR HER. OG Mokey looked like she would be dreamy and artistic, and she IS.

All in all they took away every design element that made Mokey,, Mokey and it makes me so fucking mad so I have done what I must and said “the reboot isn’t Fraggle Rock. It isn’t part of the series I love. It’s its own thing, NOT Fraggle Rock” because im not letting it get in the way of enjoying Fraggle Rock.

(Deep breath) it’s not very good. I don’t like it
