Y'know... A lot of ZaDr fics have them either gradually drifting into a less contentious status quo or establishing a deeply bizarre multilayered dynamic that is nonetheless very consistent and beholden to its own rules—which works, to be clear, because slavish adherence to the rhythm of their endless 'game' is already their canon baseline.
WITH THAT BEING SAID. I think it would be very funny to depict a ZaDr dynamic in which they're like, on-again off-again nemeses. As they get older theyre gradually forced to acknowledge the true depth of their mutual attachment, but instead of actually improving themselves in any lasting way or compromising the conflicting elements into an ill-definable state of contentious codependence, they just start oscillating wildly between periods of obscenely clingy allyship and devotedly murderous enmity. There's never an in between. They'll dedicate all their energy to trying to horrifically torture each other to death, until one of them gets uncomfortably close to actually dying or an external crisis pushes them together or they just get bored—at which point, they become obnoxiously glued at the hip until one of them relapses into anxiety about their ambitions or an argument escalates past the the point of no return or they just get bored. And every time they both Really Mean It, They're Not Gonna Do This Anymore, before naturally going ahead and doing it again

Didn’t know this was an unpopular opinion, but have seen enough meta discussion to think it might be? So here are my two cents about it: I don’t think they would ever make Sydney not reciprocate Carmy or straight up reject him. Because:
1. Have you seen the way she interacts with Carmy instead of, let’s say, Marcus? Especially this season. It’s clear they constructed a one way street between Marcus and Sydney. Marcus was seeing something Sydney wasn’t, and that’s clear in their interactions. But, instead, we get a lot of moments of connection between Carmy and Sydney. Both of them. And a sense of reliability from Sydney that shows she cares for their partnership and FOR him. Like Carmy was shitty to her all throughout, but Syd still replied softly to him that he wasn’t alone either. Not to even mention the famous under the table scene, which wasn’t just Carmy talking softly to her, it was Syd being vulnerable to him, by choice. I do think she is way more subtle in the way she cares for Carmy, and might find it harder to pick up clues of her feelings or/and to express them, but i don’t think this should negate her feelings completely. Like, Sydney is Carmy’s biggest fan, and has been since day one. And that also makes it hard to think she would have a similar reaction to the one she had with Marcus to any proposition or confession by Carmy. Which leads me to my second and most important point.
2. We have already seen the one way street storyline between Sydney and Marcus. She already rejected him, when he tried to move things forward. The writers doing exactly the same with Sydney rejecting Carmy would not only be repetitive and boring, but also would set a pattern for Sydney’s character that wouldn’t benefit her much. She would seem deattached and senseless. Especially because we wouldn’t have a justification for her rejecting two people she is so close to, further than an inability to form a deeper connection… with anyone… and that’s not the Sydney the writers are constructing. Like, one time is okay, especially if we see it’s clear one of the two was seeing more than what it was. But two times? When all we have seen is they both being obsessed about each other? Unless they turned it around completely next season… but even that would seem out of character seeing how much shit Sydney endured from Carmy this season and still followed him.
So, I have no idea where they are taking the story and the characters next… but if they were ever to explore a relationship between Carmy and Sydney that goes beyond platonic I don’t think the Sydney rejecting Carmy plot would make much sense tbh

What if Hunter takes off his gloves for the first time during a moment with Willow?? What then??
#huntlow#i am so fixated on whatever hunter's deal is with his own hands#its possible it means absolutely nothing and its possible it means EVERYTHING#lately ive just been seeing the gloves as a representation of hunter's very last emotional barrier#there was his mask cloak uniform and breastplate but all that is gone now#i think when it comes to revealing his face theres a sense of identity#and it can emcompass all forms of love and familiarity. and in this case when the mask first came off he found his first friend in Luz#followed closely by flapjack#but he didnt entirely forget himself in that ep. he made a connection but he was still distanced. still held back. still guarded.#and then when he shed his armor for hexside infiltration and flyer derby he just#let himself get swept away in it. he was happy he was warm he was lighthearted. he had fun and he made a bunch of friends#and then again during that moment where he comforts gus#hes wearing his flyer derby outfit. his armor is gone once again and theres no breastplate to guard his heart#he opens that heart to gus. he makes a sincere attempt to express empathy and compassion. he tries to show gus that he cares about him.#which is HUGE for hunter#his kindness has always been there but hes never been good at articulating it. but he tried and he did a good job#and like. okay so face heart hands. those are the big three in my stupid little brain#and there is something so very vulnerable and intimate about hand imagery#full of romantic undertones if you will#and there HAS already been an emphasis on huntlow and interlaced fingers so its like. hm.#anyway im bullshitting symbolism that isnt actually there i know im aware#but i am manifesting that when those gloves come off willow will be involved#the hands are willows jurisdiction

Listen...I know red is a color associated with fire, anger, blood, energy, strength, passion, war & rebellion & danger & such so that's why it's the Fëanorian color...
But also...in universe...I see how it could be Fëanor's favorite color or the color he sees fit for his house but I'm just saying...could it be Fëanor's favorite color because...you know...a certain lady's hair color?

curious to know your thoughts about GFA if you feel like sharing some more
ok ok ok I always feel like sharing more so i will blabber about it for a while but I will preface this by saying that it was. a lot. and I don't think I've had time to really internalize it and distill my thoughts and feelings into something cohesive and intelligent yet so this will be messy. and also very very long. you've been warned. but also thanks for asking lol :)
firstly, i found the relationship between Sidney and Hawkeye while he was institutionalized really interesting. Everything about those scenes seemed really well done to me. I mean I've never repressed a traumatic memory and then had a breakdown about it to my dear friend/therapist after spending a while (a few weeks? a month? multiple months?*) trying to get out of one intolerable environment and back to an equally, but more familiar and comfortable intolerable environment,,, so I can't say authoritatively what that should look like, but I thin Alan Alda did a really fantastic job of portraying it and the dialogue in those scenes was convincing to me. Like the sort of verbal tic of glossing over the actually traumatic part of the story and avoiding dealing with those feelings where hawkeye goes "and so and so and so..." all made that process of forcing him to confront it feel pretty real to me. Also the way Hawkeye antagonizes Sidney even though in the past he's been pretty open and cooperative when he thinks there's something wrong with him (Hawk's Nightmare, Bless You Hawkeye), and gets defensive, lashing out at Sidney, and insisting he's fine, even preferring to go back to the 4077th than stay there and actually work through the problem. I thought that made it more convincing that there *was* something wrong with him because taking his frustrations out on wise, mild-mannered, friendly Sidney would have been out-of-character otherwise, but because it was clear he was avoiding something else and on edge it worked really well to actually get that point across. I feel like I could talk about all of the details of these scenes forever so I'm gonna move on but there were all sorts of little moments that really stuck with me as saying a lot about both characters and the tension between them and whatever it is that's making hawkeye act this way, up until the tension breaks and hawkeye remembers and there's a release and the process of getting better can actually start to happen.
*it wasn't particularly clear to me how long hawkeye was there, both before the episode starts and throughout the episode, although the latter couldn't have been too long because BJ only sticks around for a few days after he gets his travel orders right? but then in the time between getting the letter and coming back, BJ visits Hawkeye which leads to the breakthrough and then it's (presumably) at least a few days after that that Hawkey goes back to the 4077th and BJ has just left. idk the timeline of the episode seemed a bit jumpy to me. It's also not clear how long they're at the bug-out location before they return to the 4077th at the end. not that that's really important--timelines have also always been inconsequential on this show so why start questioning it now?
I loved the scene where they all talk to him on the phone and are so uncomfortable and walking on eggshells and don't know how to respond when he tells each of them, relatively crudely, how desperately he doesn't want to be there while also revealing the depths of his denial. Margaret calls him 'Hawkeye' which she literally never does and it just sounds so wrong coming out of her mouth because she's obviously trying way too hard to be casual. they just so clearly don't know how to handle it because it only makes it clearer that he does have to be there and while it breaks my heart and I, from a more watsonian perspective, wish BJ or Margaret or someone could've really shined in that moment and said something to actually make Hawkeye feel better or at least distract him and get some banter going, that awkwardness just adds to the overall tension surrounding Hawkeye's stay in the psychiatric war which makes sense.
moving on, the BJ-and-Hawkeye energy episode in this episode was so weird to me. I don't know how to explain it. I think know I'm not the only one absolutely insane about everything that goes on between them in this episode but it felt especially shocking to me, I think, because I finished the rest of season 11 about a week before watching GFA (i had a bunch of school work and exams to worry about and wanted to wait till I could afford to sit down and watch the whole thing and sit with it for a while) but in the meantime I've been rewatching season 1-3 episodes for shits and giggles. So the off-kilterness of BJ and Hawk in this episode felt especially stark against Hawk and Trap's easly synchronicity. I generally am not a huge BJ fan so his like I-have-a-kid superiority moments didn't sit well with me, as usual and there were a bunch of them but that's fine; I liked how BJ talking about little Erin, as he literally *always* does set Hawkeye off and how clearly afraid of/for Hawkeye BJ was in the scene where he visits him. I liked that he does pick up a pen and paper to write a note to Hawkeye but doesn't have the time to think of what to say. I feel like that was a redeeming moment for Trapper almost-- it's also parallel to Hawk not knowing what to leave for BJ in Where There's a Will There's a War (if I loved you less I could talk about it more vibes)--he even tells Margaret that there's too much to say. but I also like Hawkeye's annoyance at it when he comes back and mentioning Trapper too and that little moment of insecurity saying that maybe there's something wrong with him. even though he's overall a very self-assured and confident person, I like the moments we get to see that he has a very human response to specific criticisms or rejections from the people that he's closest to; Hawkeye loves deeply and wholly and I feel like this is him being worried that their friendship meant more to him than to BJ, and the same for Trapper. Plus it's indicative of him not being back to 100% post-breakdown and there. actually being something wrong with him.
I was a fan of how sort of distant Hawkeye felt to everyone when he got back as well. I'm a bit foggier on this train of thought so I'm not entirely sure if this was intentional or not but there weren't a lot of scenes with Hawkeye and the rest of the characters after he returns and they don't really ever talk about the fact that he was literally in a psychiatric hospital and it also felt kind of appropriate to me. I think, again, it would have been nice to have a heart-warming open conversation about feelings and such after this and Hawkeye generally is pretty big on sharing his feelings and telling his stories and I think he would have if asked, but the fact that no one really wanted to linger on the issue makes sense both for the time (~stigma~) and for the characters who don't want to be reminded that they could theoretically have had the same reaction, and who just want things to go back to normal. They do express concern for him in small ways but mostly they just pretend like nothing happened. I think Margaret was the least like this, she was worried before Hawkeye operated for the first time and I really loved the small scene between them after bandaging a kid up when she says they can take a break and asks how he's doing. She's really making an effort to be there for him check up on him and since I'm a sucker for a Margaret/Hawkeye bestie moment I really appreciated that. But we do sort of get to see that hawkeye gets gradually better, from his extreme shakiness first time back in the operating room to operating on the young girl despite being a bit freaked... but also in terms of slowly re-integrating himself into the social flow of the camp. He seems pretty isolated when he first gets back, not really present in a lot of group scenes, leaving the party, and then by the party at the end he seems pretty much at home again. I do like, though, how he never really returns to the energy he had before. he just seems a bit muted and while that breaks my heart, it's another example of how both he and the narrative can't just bounce back after seeing the extent of the war's toll on Hawkeye and pushing him basically to his breaking point.
some non-Hawkeye-centric drabble:
I really wish some time had been put into developing Klinger and Soon-Lee's relationship, as well as Soon-Lee as a character on her own, before GFA. I think we do get a good sense of what kind of person Soon-Lee is and I like her a lot and I think GFA handles that storyline relatively well considering the minimal set-up it has but it would've been nice to see Soon-Lee more involved in the camp before the episode and know what she's like beyond her desperate need to find her family, as well as how she's interact with other characters besides Klinger--like Margaret is bridesmaid at the wedding and they have a very sweet goodbye moment but we don't see them talk to each other once before that. that could have been an interesting friendship if they'd had the time. I also have mixed feelings about Klinger staying in Korea as an ending for his character overall. Like it's very sweet and is a meaningful choice within the Soon-Lee plot because he's sacrificing returning to the home he adores so much for her which shows how much he loves her but selfishly i feel cheated out of the satisfaction of Klinger finally getting to go back to Toledo, after 9 seasons (I don't think they mention he's from there before Adam's Rib in season 3) of him waxing poetic about it .
I liked Charles' arc in the episode too. He had the two things going on with the Chinese POW musicians and tiff with Margaret. I don't have much to say about it except that it all felt very in-character for him and sort of encapsulated the gradual breaking down of his walls that'd happened over the past 5 seasons within those two hours just to really remind you of how far he'd come. I don't have super strong feelings about Charles as a character but David Ogden Stiers' performance was phenomenal, as always.
I kind of wish more had happened with Father Mulcahy i think. All of the characters were so isolated, actually, not just Hawkeye. Aside from Margaret, Charles barely talks to anyone, Klinger and Soon-Lee are their own thing and Mulcahy relies on BJ and God alone in regards to his struggle as he comes to terms with being deaf. I feel like he doesn't really have much catharsis.
I really liked that Margaret decided to work in a hospital as a nurse instead of stay in the army after the war. I love that she decided to make a choice based on what she felt was most important instead of just to get approval from her father; and also her priorities have changed. She always took nursing very seriously and was concerned with being competent as well as compassionate but early seasons Margaret would not have made that choice regardless of her father as a factor. It seems self-evident that a main character in a supposedly anti-military show wouldn't want to be promoted in the military but by season 11.. who knows it could have gone another way. but that wouldn't have made sense for Margaret's character at all so I'm glad that they actually showed how much she grew and let her have a happy ending with herself at the center of it instead of the army, or her father, or a love interest.
The actual goodbye sequence at the end felt a little bit stale to me actually. Maybe because it was just so formulaic and practical like with them each taking off individually on different modes of transportation after saying an individual goodbye to each person. It felt a little bit hokey in that way, although i guess it did make sure that each character duo got a proper parting moment. Still sweet though and there were things I liked about each character's departure. the Hawkeye/Margaret kiss moment i have mixed feelings about. I really hated BJ and Hawk saluting Potter. and with all its faults I did like the Goodbye sign from BJ to Hawkeye.
I liked that it was actually kind of bittersweet because of BJ promising Hawk that they would see each other and that the note was "just in case" except Hawkeye doesn't hear any of that, he just sees the note. He doesn't hear the promise. but he got the goodbye he wanted. but maybe he thinks it's just BJ admitting to what he already thought which would be sad. just. so many feelings. so I guess it kind of works for me idk. I will also say that despite being a staunch piercintyre defender and generally disagreeing with most beejhawk theories, the final goodbye between them did more to convince me of repressed BJ than the other 8 seasons combined. Idk what it was about Mike Farell's performance in those few moments but i Got It for a minute before they hugged and Hawkeye ran off.
ok I think that's all I have to say for now. sorry for how long this ended up being but I did warn you lol. I'd love to hear any thoughts you, or anyone on mashblr reading this, have on my thoughts or just about GFA in general although I absolutely do not expect anyone to respond to everything I talked about here because it was kind of everything about the episode.

♡ Intimate Moments | Justin & Jasmine |GENEVA ISLAND
~ Transcript below ~
* Jasmine and Justin are at the fire pit talking *
Ju : You are hilarious!
Jas : Thanks!! I love to keep it light hearted and fun, as much as I can anyways…
Ju : Well I love it, I am pretty much the same. Have you always been so funny?
Jas : Hmm… I’m not really sure … Not to get depressing but, I grew up without my dad which was really hard for me. Not only that, but I also was bullied pretty much my entire childhood… Humor found it’s way to me as my best coping mechanism I guess!
Ju : I can see that… you have a great nature to you. A pure soul some would say… and others would say “The brighter the light, the darker the shadow”
Jas : What do you mean by that?
Ju : Just that… You have been through so much darkness, evil, and hatred, yet your happiness and good nature persists… You are a very bright light to this world!
Jas : Oh my… that is so sweet, and deep… have you always been this profound or is this just some kind of pick up line?
Ju : It could be both… but, similarly to you, I was pretty much raised solely by my father, and he gave me not only a lot of freedom to explore different ideas and theologies, but also helped guide me through it all.
Jas : I feel like I could listen to you talk all night long…
* they look lovingly at each other*

News flash: queer stories are not just all cute moments and kissing scenes. To act like that’s how it should be otherwise you’re being cheated does a HUGE disservice to the complexity of these characters and their storylines.

Tumblr media
─「エウルア」─  they live in two different worlds.
she was the heir to the family of tyrant, the name that shouldered a curse following her every footsteps. a kind of stench that could not be washed away. she was a knight of favonius, held tightly onto the DETERMINATION to prove herself different from the name she carried. the blade within her hand witnessed a sworn oath to protect MONDSTADT despite the people looking at her with disgust and hatred. she was a knight through and through, how her sword was always at the ready to strike down any threat coming to her homeland.
he was a HARBINGER, far far from home. the land of winter he came, donning the cloak of power and brand of cryo archon. the boy who once fell into the ABYSS, the very place that robbed him of the light within his eyes, and blessed him with a power that felt like a curse all on its own. blood of a warrior, a survivor, a boy who was forced to grow up faster than one could prepare. now, he stood a man loyal to the tsaritsa, with his entirety pledged to her VISION.
yet, somehow, they had found their ways to each other under the snowy mountain of dragonspine.
side by side, the SHADOWS they cast behind them under the moonlight and countless stars had merged into one. neither was a stranger to the freezing climate surrounding them. one with the vision resembling the same element, and one had grown up in the harsh winter for so long to be bothered by it. that, and the WARMTH from the person next to them was all they would ever need to feel alive.
the stars were magnificent, however, what they both got entirely lost in were each other's eyes.
his lips were more intoxicating than any alcohol she ever consumed.
breaths were caught in her lungs, and the KNIGHT let herself be swept by the current that was his waves. they had kissed before, many times, but tonight it was different in so many ways, in ways that she would allow him to take control and surrender her very self into his hold. warnings and advices from her peers and friends be naught, for no one was there underneath the stars with her except him. hearing the sound of her name whispered so breathlessly against their connected lips made her push forward in the same rhythm as his, as though neither of them was willing to PART from the kiss at all. that air was a second need compares to each other's taste.
dual-colored hues were hazy when she gazed up at him, only then had she realized their CLOTHING had been disheveled, their hands desperately wanting to feel more of the other. she was watching in awe as the harbinger removed his jacket, allowing for his battle-worn body to be displayed before her eyes.
eula didn't know when she had removed her own gloves, but bare fingers made contact to his scar-ridden form for the first time, and she felt him SHUDDER. he was nothing short of a war beast, a thought that crossed her clouded mind as her fingers mapped down his form, as though she was admiring a piece of art and perhaps she did. the grooves of his muscles, the countless scars littered his frame. this was the body of a HARBINGER, the enemy of the nation.
she traced her lips following where her hand had been, kissing her way down as though exploring the territory unknown, but felt like HOME all the same. it was a journey she wanted to get herself lost in, taking the scent of war, of bloodshed, while filling her mind with him. his fingers were cold initially, as they roamed over her now exposed flesh and it was her turn to shudder in pleasure and delight feeling his mouth on her shoulder.
did that leave a mark ? how she wished he left his marks on her.
her back arched, the warmth of his skin pressing to her own without any ounce of clothing in place brought a foreign yet blissful sensation to her. everywhere his fingers roamed, everywhere he laid his touch, the knight felt her skin burning in its wake, as he left traces of him everywhere he went. he touched her like she was something fragile, like she was going to BREAK should he not be careful. it was the first time anyone handled her with utmost care. it was the first time she felt so loved in the arms of the person whose title supposed to be her enemy.
and she whimpered his name, breathlessly, desperately, like a PLEAD, and he responded in turn. since when did her NAME sound like a prayer when uttered from those burning lips ? his hand came to her own, and she marveled over how different they were compared to hers. while her own was also rough from the training, his was much more calloused and decorated with scars. she had never felt his hand wholly without his gloves before. yet again, another FIRST. yet again, something she would burn into her memory.
slender digits filled the gap between his fingers with her own, and she brought his BATTLE-WORN KNUCKLES to her lips, so close that her lashes were brushing against them as she kissed each and single one of those bruised knuckles with utter affection. these were the hands of the man she loves with all her heart, the hands of the man who had found it in himself to accept a tainted heiress like herself. it mattered not that these hands were soaked in CRIMSON before, or how many lives they had taken. it mattered not they were going to face reality in the day to come. at this very moment, at least, she was his.
she wanted him to leave his marks on her, so no one else can claim her. no one else other than him.
his lips found hers once more, and their tongues intertwined in a dance of passion. how many times could someone fall for another ? the KNIGHT CAPTAIN wasn't sure, though she was certain tonight was the night she would fall for him all over again. deeper, this time. fingers tread themselves through his ginger locks, and eyes half-lidded, dazed in the HEAT they both succumbed to. it felt right being in his embrace, it felt right feeling his hands on her skin, feeling his skin on hers. when their eyes connected, breaths released in foggy exhales, she murmured his name, only to be given a NEW one under his own breath.
" ajax ... " it sounded almost alien to her tongue, yet, it was that moment she felt she had seen HIM for him. not as the fatui harbinger, not as a warrior from snezhnaya, not as a diplomat in liyue.
but him, as himself, the one who fell into the abyss, the one who survived.
both her hands gently cradled his expression, thumb tenderly rubbing over his cheek, memorizing the way his azure hues looked at her so adoringly, and her own gaze was one of total smitten. their lips clashed to one another, tongues seeking each other's taste and she moaned into the kiss, repeating the NAME he had gifted her with, like a secret, like a promise. their hands slid downwards, mapping every curves of each other, and she felt her breath caught in her lungs when he found places that brought overwhelming pleasure running through her form. her reaction was unlike her, and she felt vulnerable under his very touch. but at the same time, she felt safe, she felt LOVED. how she so willingly let him explore every corners of her body, spreading that fire in its wake, making her sing his name over and over.
now she understood why it's called love making.
a panting gasp ripped itself from her lungs, disappearing into the frozen night air but even the cold cannot touch them now. not when her very breath was stolen by the press of his lips, and she burned the memory of his skin, his body through her fingertips and mouth. burn the addicting taste of his skin to her tongue. closer, deeper, until there was no gap in between them, until they became inseparable, even if it's just for TONIGHT.
tonight, she was his, and he was hers.
                ajax ... my ajax ...

Hey btw this Misha Collins thing is exactly what we're talking about when we tell people to stop idolizing celebrities, because he was worshipped as a god by a huge chunk of the people who are now shitting on him for "always doing publicity stunts." A few years back, he ran around sdcc with guys dressed like storm troopers to hand out water bottles, and people on here loved it and talked about what a great guy he was for keeping everyone cool and hydrated. If he did that now, after all this, he'd be criticized for making those people run in those costumes and for encouraging single use plastics. It's the same thing that happened with Jared, where people adored him and the AKF campaign, thought he was a hero for sharing his story, and then something happened on twitter or something and suddenly people were literally saying they hoped he would die. I'm not a fan of supernatural, I haven't been in years. This isn't me defending them and this isn't really even about them, they're just examples. People did it with John Mulaney and then he had some problems in his private personal life and everyone hates him now, people did it with John Green and then suddenly he was public enemy number one. Hell, there were people worshipping Lin Manuel Miranda when Hamilton first came out, and now look how people cringe when they have to hear his voice in any movie for any reason. It's a bafflingly common cycle, especially on the internet, especially on tumblr. Right now yall are getting real scary about Taika Waititi and I'm so afraid for when he eventually says or does Something that conflicts with this stainless image of him and he's chewed alive for it. Just stop putting people on pedestals. Treat them like people. Sometimes they do good things, but they can also do bad things. Just like you.

before she got close to miranda, aaravi had never actually slayed a merfolk
this is because, in terms of the redesign universe, merfolk are stupidly rare on land. most people are not even aware that they exist, much less have met one before. if they have met one, it’s probably miranda, and she’s likely the only merfolk they’ve ever met. the other ROs have also met bellanda, but that’s about where it tops out.
due to the political climate in the merkingdom and long-standing isolationist policies that are only now even being slightly lifted, there’s just... no real population of merfolk on land. of those who are on land, they have to be approved by the merkingdom and are basically all going to be royals on very brief stints.
miranda in particular is unique because she’s representative of this shift - sending her up to the land was intended for her to act as ambassador for the merkingdom, making first impressions with those on the land, a gesture of good will that she was going to learn about the land and it would shape her eventual rule, thus impacting the future of the merkingdom, and acted as a symbol of trust that the merkingdom would trust the land to take care of her. her arrival at spooky high was strategic in this sense - a wide variety of landfolk come there and a lot of other powerful people are also there, as well as more mundane things, such as location and available resources and it just working out.
likewise, its important to remember that miranda’s serfs are not merfolk. while on land, miranda is entirely cared for by the serfs, with minimal merfolk staff (due to said political climate and not permitting many other merfolk onto land), whereas underwater all of her staff would be merfolk.
because of all of this, there’s not really a chance for aaravi to have ever encountered another merfolk before. miranda would have been the first time she had ever seen one, and as an extension of those isolationist policies, not much is known about merfolk either. the merkingdom is highly private, and while miranda is serving as an ambassador, they’re still not exactly eager to give away even the most basic of information about themselves or merfolk as a whole. no other slayers would have warned aaravi on what to look for when it came to merfolk, and there was no available research on what they were like.
as an extension of all of this, and an example of merfolk being exceptionally hesitant to share even basic and “ordinary” information about themselves, there isn’t any information out on what their biology is like. nothing aaravi could have used to get an idea on what potential weak spots merfolk had, or how to handle them, or even what they were capable of. for a while, she thought miranda could control people with her voice.
hence, their very first interactions were aaravi trying to figure out what information she could get on miranda (for slayer purposes, obviously, just in case she needed it), and miranda mostly just being equal parts flattered (as you do, when you are full of pride and hubris) and humored that she was obsessing over stuff that she thought was pretty damn absurd. merfolk are probably the most biological and simple monsters out there. if she just looked at big game books on crocodiles, she’d get a pretty good idea on what to do.
