I think the theories that dehumanize the villagers of the Fishing Hamlet by making them into mad monsters or like, them having being replaced by the parasites inside Kos kinda miss the point of the whole thing.
The Hunters felt justified in killing those villagers because they lacked human features, but the game makes a point in portraying it all as a terrible sin. And it is, because these are still clearly people in an even more apparent way than most beasts too. They can speak, they feel human emotions... they are just half fish, and that was enough for Byrgenwerth to disregard their humanity and slaugther them.
