I don’t know what power on earth made me get on that truck with him and what unknown force made me speed through a shower and a change of outfit to walk out the door to hop on that truck again. It certainly wasn’t the hunger. Maybe it was the fact that I had him eating out of the palm of my hand and I was going to use that power.

No one messes with Emi Alonso and gets away with it. I’ll make him pay for this.

So there I was standing in front of him again in the first outfit I could find from my unpacked boxes. Nothing fancy, just a cute white crop top and some high waisted jeans that made me feel sexy and confident. I had my game face on, a smile with just a bit of rage underneath.

“I thought you weren’t going to come back out.” He said leaning on the hood of his truck. When he saw me walk out the door his face light up like a firework on the night sky. It was cute and infuriating at the same time. Actually, mostly infuriating. Actually I hate him.

“Were you going to wait for me all night?” I teased raising my brows with a sense of satisfaction.

“I was.” The way he said that so naturally made a knot form in my chest. The kind of knot you get when you realize your dog would probably wait for you forever and it would be content to do it, if meant that it got to see you again. But I shook that idea out of my head.

“Be glad I came back out then,” I said clearing my throat. “So what’s for breakfast?”

“Anything your heart desires.” He said opening the door and helping me into his truck which smelled like him: musk and bergamot.

I want your head on a silver platter and your heart on a stick. Preferably with some powdered chile, for some flavoring when I devour it.

“That’s too broad. Any suggestions?” I said innocently.

“I know this place around the corner? They have basically everything, and a very excellent grand slam.” He said starting up the truck.

“Okay. Sold,” I said, picturing it and actually salivating. Maybe I was hungry.

“Alright then.” He said as we left the house behind.

The town was a lot dustier than I remembered. After spending eleven years in a greener place, Los Lobos seemed like an Old Mexican Western with classic adobe architecture. The southwest style wasn’t my favorite, I preferred American neo-classical but now looking at it now from the window of Kieran’s truck it seemed nostalgic. The old tourist shop still stood on Main Street for the few tourists that found their way in taking the old highway routes on their voyage to another bigger city as their destiny. I thought it so weird to feel myself a tourist in my old hometown. I wondered what would have happened if I’d never left.

You wouldn’t have gotten your heart completely broken, part of me whispered but I also pushed that thought aside.

“Is it like you remember?” Kieran interrupted my thoughts.

“Sort of, it just feels surreal,” I said glancing at the old high school I would have gone to if I’d stayed.

“I know that feeling. When I came back from college it was the same.” He said, “Like everything was the same but also different at the same time.”

“Yeah, something like that,” I said amazed at how he knew what I was feeling. “Maybe it was just us that changed?” I sighed.

“Maybe.” He repeated.

We finally made it to a restaurant standing proud before a small shopping strip. It was a large elegant place with the name Amberstone stamped on the façade.

Where is he taking me? I thought as he parked the car and got out and opened my door.

“A place around the corner, huh?” I asked, raising my brows feeling betrayed yet again.

He shrugged with a smile and extended his hand like a prince asking for a dance. I rolled my eyes a little but I took his hand and he led me to the door. I hate him.

When we got there, there was a group of women heading out. I vaguely recognized them, they were a couple of years older than me, but I do remember seeing their faces somewhere around school.

“Hey, Kieran.” the blonde one said, she was clearly the queen bee of the group. Perfect makeup and pristine clothes, her handbag looked more expensive than my car.

“Mornin’” He replied holding the door open.

I could feel their eyes on me, glaring with jealousy. That’s when it hit me. While the Wollstonecrafts were kings of the pecan empire of Los Lobos, the Trusts were queens of the pistachio orchards.

Apparently, the Wollstonecraft twins were still very much hot on the market and the Trust sisters had had their eyes on them since middle school. And there I was still holding Kieran’s hand as he waited for them to leave the building, their glares penetrating every inch of my skin.

But Kieran didn’t seem to notice in fact he smiled and said “Jessica, have you met Emi? She’s new in town.” He beamed.

“I haven’t had the pleasure,” she replied, her voice laced with venom. “I’m Jessica Trust, who did you say you were?” She extends her hand for a shake.

“I’m Emi.” I shook her hand but her grip was too light for a proper shake, almost as if she was disgusted to touch my hand. I almost rolled my eyes.

“Delighted.” She lied then turned to Kieran “Best get going then.”

I didn’t watch them leave, instead, Kieran took my hand and led me through the fancy eatery towards the kitchen in the back which was only separated from the dining area by a thick wall of glass.

“What are you doing?” I asked as we made it past a door that said staff only.

“So you don’t want breakfast?” He asked, making a cheeky grin and then turned to the chef “Jose, mind if I take up some space for a bit?”

Jose, the chef, looked very surprised but he shrugged and waved “Go ahead.”

“You work here?” I asked him as he expertly navigated his way around the kitchen.

“Sometimes, it’s more of a hobby.” He answered then asked with a grin “Sweet or salty?”

“Sweet.” I bark immediately.

“Oh, sweet tooth?!” He smiles heading to the fridge and taking out some eggs.

“Very sweet tooth.” I crossed my arms and watched him as he began to work. “And let me guess your family owns this place?”

“Yeah.” He shrugs “I’d be mine, but my father refuses to sell it.” He takes out some more ingredients

Bread, eggs, sugar, syrup…..

“Why are you trying so hard to impress me?” I ask.

“Because I really want you to like me.” He looks up momentarily from his cooking and his amber eyes burn into mine. “Is it working?” He smiles hopefully.

“I don’t know.” I break away the gaze to look at the chocolate syrup. “Maybe.” I hate him.

“Tough crowd. Alright, I’ll change strategy.” He wipes some sugar from his fingers.

“You’re not going to give up are you?” I say running my hands through my hair nervously pushing away the knot of guilt that for some reason was forming in my chest.

He shakes his head “No. I don’t think I will.”

I have him twirling around my little finger.

I laugh and shake my head thinking up a plan “I’d like to see that.”

His dashing smile makes me look away but that doesn’t discourage him either “Okay. If you please, Ms. Emi, take a seat at our finest table? Your food will be there shortly.” He says waving to the table nearest to the kitchen.

I sat down and watched him from the other side of the glass.

I wanted him to suffer. I wanted him to feel used, just for a moment. I wanted him to know what it felt like. I wanted him to pay for last night.

Why was he making it so hard?

Elvis, Storage Wars and Pandemics - An Update from Las Vegas

Things are good here. We pay a little extra for a bigger ex-house trailer lot with room to park the van. We've got a little shade, too.

We watched the weather impatiently and finally arrived at King's Row in early October. The plan WAS to head north in the spring. We were going to a buffet once or twice a week and enjoying the huge selection of fast food restaurants (compared to Las Vegas, NM). Our favorite buffets are at Sam's Town and the Orleans casinos, where we gamble $5 each and get free lunch buffets. It didn't take long to find the Pink Box donuts, but they are across town and a little pricey. We got Cox cable set up at our lot, which we sooo much appreciated during the Wuhan virus months. While in NM I had gotten hooked on dumpster-diving and storage auction videos on YouTube. I found out dumpster-diving is illegal in Las Vegas, so we started going to storage auctions. My best finds were three 925 silver rings, each in a different unit. And the cash. I found a $20 bill in a BDU top and tons of spare change. A neighbor who was moving gave us a 10x10 canopy for shade while sorting.

You get tons of household stuff for just a few bucks. We can't handle mattresses and big furniture with just the little Jeep. Although the bulk of stuff goes to GoodWill, I have made over a thousand dollars on eBay and FB Marketplace. One week I went to the post office four out of five days. Some Mondays I go twice a day. We've sold TVs, game systems, games, a Kindle Oasis, a webcam, sets of high-end clothes and Nike/Jordans, Navy BDUs and uniforms, sets of books, lots of bikes, cell phones, IKEA end tables and lots of misc. At one unit I paid $35 and another bidder immediately bought two folding tables for $40.

Some of the more odd finds were a Nissan Leaf charger, some HVAC baffles, digital surveying tools, a 4' long aquarium, a digital darkroom timer, a 1972 signed Munich Olympics print (I still haven't sold this), 7 sets of barn door hardware, horse tack, meth, morphine, narcan, Rx pills (some the same that we take), tons of driver's licenses, Clark County jail IDs and some giant grow lights. We bought about 25 units until the Pandemic shut them down. They ranged in price from $5 to $85. I plan to continue when we settle down in Florida, where we'll have at least three good flea markets where we can sell stuff (last I checked). Then whatever is left will go to GoodWill. We were thinking about getting a cargo trailer here, but the BMV is closed and they won't even answer eMails about out-of-staters getting tags for trailers.

I finally gave up my flip phone for a "Smart" phone. I use it for as little as possible to avoid swearing like a drunk sailor.

Corny went to four Penn & Teller "Fool Us" tapings at the Rio casino. They will start to air on June 22.

Our Wuhan Virus Experience:

January 25th we went to the Ethel M chocolate factory in Henderson to redeem a "Tasting" groupon. We pulled into the lot and there was a tour bus parked out front. Chinese people, most of them wearing masks, were coming and going. We were aware of the virus at that time and that it was spreading from China. One of the masked women asked me to take her picture in the cactus garden - I made a rude face and waved her away. I wasn't going to touch her germy phone.

I signed up at Planet Fitness February 25. They closed a couple weeks later.

March 9th we went to the last storage auction before the Stay-at-Home season.

We started loading up on TP and food before it was popular. Before masks, every time I went to Wally's I loaded up on this n' that. When the shelves started going bare (around March 15th here), we were all set. I had three boxes of gloves, two from storage units, and a total of seven N-95 masks. The first Clark County Wuhan virus death was on March 16th. I found out why our Wal-Mart is so crazy busy all the time. While I was sitting in the Jeep waiting for Corny to buy and install a new battery, I watched a continuous parade of bus people filing back and forth from the store to the bus stop. We started going to a less germy Wally's a bit farther from home.

Corny got a second Shingles vaccine at Sam's Club. I was off wandering around shopping. Later when he wasn't feeling well I asked him what his temperature had been at Sam's. They hadn't taken it! I couldn't believe it. It's kinda standard you make sure someone isn't sick before you innoculate them!

We each got our $1200 Wuhan checks on the first round. I donated mine to Chase Bank. Corny donated his to CitiBank.

There were no casinos, buffets or auctions during "quarantine". Other than a little boredom, basically we just took our laziness to a higher level. We were used to laziness. I feel for the people with kids - and the poor kids. Geocaching Headquarters cancelled all events and the big August Geo-gatherings in Seattle and British Columbia. Corny was sad because he couldn't take the van to see State Parks, museums and such. He finally made it out west and everything was closed! He wants to stay here through the summer and take van trips to cooler places, instead of moving the bigass RV up north. I would like to head home to Florida in the fall and see about buying some land and settling down. Corny will have to use the van for extended trips out west.

Corny took the top of the engine off the Jeep to change the spark plugs. Turns out one of the cylinder heads may be bad. If so, it is a $4000 fix. Or not fix. We've gotten used to the check engine light.

Geocaching-wise, we've been to several local events. At one we donated about a dozen ready-to-go spray painted/repurposed Sam's Club-sized M&M/cashew containers. I've taken several big solo Jeep trips to complete the NV Delorme challenge. I found a nice Challenge Row just north of St. George, UT. All six of us took a nice little van trip on Route 66 (first picture, above) from Kingman, AZ to Seligman to use up the old gas in the tank. After spending 1/2 hour wiping down everything in a few germy hotel rooms, I started sleeping in the Jeep every other night. I have a pizza-shaped pool float that fits perfectly. I was almost done planning a big UT van trip when the auctions started back up.

Now when I go on a trip, I have to end 60-70 eBay listings. If I were willing to pay eBay about $5/month I could do it with one click, but I feel like I give eBay/PayPal way more than enough money already. Certainly more than they deserve. They charge auctioneer prices because they can, but in reality all they are is a listing service like Craig's List, FB MarketPlace and Offer Up, which are all free. We do all the hard work. FeeBay just sits ontheirass and sucks money. Do I sound cynical?

i was thinking more about the "frisk is the name that represents You not the role you play in RPGs" theory and how it makes no sense. like if that was the goal, the game could have given you two prompts. One for the fallen human, one for you the player, like in the Mother series or in Deltarune. it would have been so easy to do what the mom games do and ask you for your real name early on and then surprise you with it later, but UT doesn't do that.

also thinking about how people are like "chara is the archetype of RPG protagonist" which I mean. I get it but also toriel is a tutorial character archetype parody. but she's more than that, she's complex. flowey and chara are "about" RPGs in some ways I think, but that's just the starting point for understanding them. if chara was just a gaming demon, why would they be bothered by you replaying NM? people replay RPGs all the time. and they don't say "play another game" they say "play a different route". this isn't "ohohoho I'm murder baby I love to grind and gain levels" behavior.

undertale works on a lot of levels I think, as video game commentary and as something more "real", so all at once it's like "replaying video games too much and doing 100% completion can alienate you from the game" and it's also talking about being alienated from the people around you in real life. so maybe the True Meaning of chara can be "stop grinding all the time it's stupid and boring" and "this kid is in a really vulnerable place right now and you're their partner and you should help them out". maybe the True Meaning of frisk can be “you’re no longer acting like a generic RPG protagonist” and “after trying so hard to save everyone for so long, frisk finally gets to be part of this family”

my twin brother and I finally took care of a huge undertaking we’d been putting off: emptying my storage unit down in Philly. we picked up the van on Friday, drove it down yesterday, emptied my storage unit (and fit nearly everything in the van, holy shit, my brother is a Tetris grandmaster), and then drove allll the back home to the Cape in one day.

it...honestly wasn’t bad? the worst of it was trying to get home: as always happen, I-95 N in CT (specifically the Stamford area, which is a manifested region of the First Circle of Hell on this earth) turned into a GIANT CLUSTERFUCK complete with entire sections of the interstate shut down entirely, so as I was acting as navigator, I was basically plotting and re-routing our trip home until right as we got over the Tappen Zee Bridge and the first alternate route became available. (pro-tip if you’re ever driving between southern New England and the Mid-Atlantic: do not fucking take I-95 through NYC. the Cross Bronx Expressway is another manifestation of the First Circle. swing north to take 287 over the Tappen Zee. there is zero difference in actual travel in terms of distance or time, except you won’t be sitting in the middle of the Bronx inching along at a quarter mile an hour.) we ended up veering suddenly north onto the Saw Mill River Parkway (gorgeous stretch of road, even if so many trees were covered in bittersweet sucking the life out of them), hooking up with I-84 at some point, and taking that all the way to the MassPike and taking that to 495 to hit the Cape. twenty miles longer than our planned 95 route, but ultimately ended up thirty minutes faster.

ANYWAY both the Twin and I are fucking exhausted, so we’re just...not doing much of anything today. doesn’t help it’s rainy as fuck.

tomorrow I’m gonna Kondo the shit out of my bookshelves (there are so many I only read once or just didn’t finish) to make room for the stuff that was in storage. most of the clothes we brought back I suspect will end up donated. kitchen stuff probably a mix of donate/store in the garage in their tubs. some of the furniture might end up donated, space is at a premium in the house we’ll have to figure something out on that front, but we’ve got the van through Friday so worst case we just haul ‘em over to Goodwill or the Cape Abilities Thrift Shop if need be.

today, though, I think I’m just work on crafting some stuff for the FC house, gathering, and maybe hop into Pagos to ride the NM train since I’m nearly done with that hellzone.

The Border: Three Problems. No Strategy.

Just slogans for Fox News and worse to come.

We just completed a 2700 mile ride from the Gulf to the Pacific following the US-Mexico border as closely as legally possible. We met people from across the political spectrum including ranchers, environmentalists, park rangers, border patrol, law enforcement, activists, and a bunch of other people living in the borderlands.

A thee week jaunt doesn’t make me an expert but we did deliberately seek out diverse opinions and listen to people’s experiences. Take these comments in that context.

So .. there are three overlapping problems at the border and (spoiler alert) a wall will not fix any of them but will create a whole set of new problems.

Men Seeking Work

Since the border was created 180 years ago, there has been a steady flow of workers from the south coming to work in the US. They arrive, work, pay their taxes, contribute to the local economy, send money home or go home. There are jobs that US workers do not want to do in our fields and factories and construction sites. Even migrants’ children who speak English and have an education do not want to pick radishes or gut chickens. There has always been a demand, and there will always be a supply. It is idiotic to claim that they are taking Americans’ jobs and it is even more stupid to spend billions on a wall or spend millions of dollars on border patrol resources and prisons to intercept and deport workers that America needs. A wall will not stop this flow when people can climb, fly, or tunnel.

If there was a sensible worker visa program, this problem would simply go away. This would free resources for other uses, stop migrants dying in the Sonoran desert or at the hands of coyotes, and move money from the hands of criminal smugglers into the hands of US communities.

Families Seeking Asylum

The countries to the south of Mexico - Guatamala, El Salvador, Nicaragua - are failed states. Climate change has decimated their agriculture - especially coffee - and gangs and drugs have decimated their civil society. Families are leaving in desperation to save themselves and their children. They would rather risk losing their children through separation in the US than lose them to gang violence at home. This is like osmotic pressure on the border and it is only going to increase unless the US helps fix these countries. There could be another million on their way but these migrants are turning themselves in legally at the major border ports of entry in the hope of finding a better life - despite Pres.Trump’s increasing cruelty and desperation to make them disappear. A wall will make no difference to this.

Drugs Seeking Markets

NAFTA expanded trade with Mexico and truck traffic increased 5x across the border providing lots of places to hide drugs. At the same time, NAFTA enabled cheap American corn and wheat to put Mexican farmers out of business.Throw in the opioid epidemic that is ramping demand for Mexican heroin and you have a perfect storm. Cartels have shifted their delivery routes from the Caribbean to Mexico and have found lots of unemployed Mexicans to grow new profitable crops and work as foot soldiers in the drug war. Drugs mainly come in through ports of entry but still also come across the open desert and, in neither case, will a “beautiful wall” make a bit of difference. Again, there is a huge demand that will be satisfied one way or another. If we stopped wasting resources on catching and jailing migrants, we’d have more resources to spend on the real problem of drugs. Many times we heard from border patrol that they are being diverted to process asylum paperwork instead of going after bad guys,

There are also three problems that we OUGHT to be dealing with but that we are ignoring when we are distracted by the Trump miasma of bullshit.

Healthcare Caravan

When staying in Columbus, NM we went over the border to Palomas for dinner. This is a tiny hamlet but has four dental offices and as many pharmacies catering to Americans looking for affordable healthcare. In Los Algodones across from Yuma, AZ there are over 300 dental offices and, in the peak winter season, over 6,000 Americans cross every day to see a Mexican dentist. The town is informally called “Molar City”. We don’t have caravans of latinos invading America, we have caravans of Americans invading Mexico for healthcare. This is a natural market response to the US healthcare nightmare but is a disgrace being hidden by the distractions.

Ecological Disaster

Any wall can be breached by humans but that is not the same for wildlife. When we met with a group of ranchers in the Sky Islands area of Arizona and New Mexico, they described their region between the Rockies and the Sierra Madre as one of the most diverse ecosystems in North America. They depend on the health of this area for their ranching livelihood, they have been looking after it for generations, and are upset that a wall will do permanent damage to wildlife corridors and the health of this land. Along the Rio Grande Valley the story is the same; a wall along the river will cutoff wildlife and ranches from the river and destroy the diversity and beauty of this wild place. We talked to a lot of deeply conservative people who were dead set against a wall.

Border Industrial Complex

There’s money to be made in borders and walls - construction with little oversight, technology for surveillance by contractors, prisons and transport for apprehended migrants, equipment and arms and trucks and service and housing and management. These are all multi-billion dollar businesses with lobbyists and committee chairmen and good old boys all over the establishment, This is becoming entrenched, self-perpetuating, and fundamentally corrupt.

Normally I do my best to ignore shit like this, but I honestly feel like someone needs to set a few things straight (... hehe). (I tried to use language that would include both female and NB routes, but I may have flubbed. If I did, assume I meant to include both.)

I have seen several people kvetch about the lack of male characters in specific routes (VN, Havenfall) because they have (so far) only two male LIs. Ok, whatever. Everyone’s free to kvetch as they wish. I do not care about that.

However.

I have a problem when y’all start dragging in the LGBT side of the fandom into your posts, because rather than coming across as inclusive, you come across as pandering in the most condescending and demeaning way and after dealing with that from 99% of the media for years, I have no patience left. You tack us on like an afterthought, like adding that makes you sound like you’re also thinking of the poor, underrepresented queers. Especially because I have never seen anyone argue for an equal ratio of LIs (M:F:NB). None.

You wanting more than two male LIs is not the same as us wanting more LIs that aren’t men. Not when having two NM LIs is a goddamn victory for us, yet two male LIs is considered too few.

Lemme break it down for you:

VN: 2M/2F HIFL: 2M/1F/1NB GIL: 5M/1F L&L: 5M/2F SP: 4M/1F AFK: 5M/1F/1NB TLAP: 4M/1F CLA: 5M/1F ST: 7M/1F Total: 39M/11F/2NB or about a 20:5:1 ratio.

I have literally been told that I should be happy that we get any NM LIs, cause LGBT women/NB are a minority and thus not profitable enough to be worth making many routes (there are straight women who play those routes too, just saying). I have been told a lot of excuses of why wlw is staggeringly behind even mlm media in general, let alone straight romance.

I get that they’re a business, but the fact that we have JD and Helena and Lorelei means that something is going right and it is in fact worth it. Which means that, no, we don’t have to be satisfied with a single NM LI. We don’t have to accept that there has to be four or five times the number of men to women or twenty times the number of men to NB.

Do you know how much media is out there that involves wlw relationships or wlw/NB people in general? Not a whole lot. And a lot of the time we are the token queer character. Or a stereotype. The amount of positive representation is thin on the ground and almost never mainstream. There is a joke that you can get a lesbian to watch anything by saying it has a lesbian and she doesn’t die, except that is a very real thing. And so often people say “well you should be happy you get any representation” and “it won’t be profitable”. Well since Lovestruck hasn’t abandoned their model yet, I’m guessing they’re not in the red. So maybe, just maybe, I’m allowed to be bloody selfish and want more than what we’re getting. Just because we’re a minority does not mean we want to be reminded of that fact all the damn time.

Do you now get why maybe some of us aren’t thrilled about Tyrian being the next SP LI when Nova is the only NM LI in the series (and adding him in would make the number of male LIs equal to the number of named female characters in all routes combined)? Especially cause they didn’t even have to make him a guy?

Here’s what I’m trying to say: if you think saying that a series with two male LIs needs more and then tacking on something about more f/nb routes makes you an ally, it doesn’t. If you don’t really give a shit about whether or not more NM routes are added, don’t mention it at all. If you’re doing it to get ally points... *beleaguered sigh* If I wanted to be pandered to, I’d go tweet JK Rowling.

Why we want more representation comes from a complete different place than why you want more male LIs. Because we are tired of being an afterthought. So don’t make us one too.

I find this memory Editor from Elecraft to have limited capability. Apparently it is not possible to insert a new memory location into an already established sequence, nor is it possible to move a memory 'up' or 'down' in the sequence. Can anyone let me know if a more 'capable' memory editor exists for the KX line of Transceivers ? Gordon VE3JSJ (Proud owner of KX1, KX2, KX3, KXPA100)

You can select an entire line by right clicking on the memory 'number' and then cut and paste it.

You should be able to move a 'block' of entries in that manner.

True, but how the data is written to flash does not have to dictate how it is displayed to the user of the memory editor. With a little more complexity, the app could allow the user to arrange the memories any way they like on the user interface. Including allowing memories to be inserted and not overwritten. Then at write time the app could assemble the information in the specified order into one RAM buffer that then gets written to flash in blocks.

I have heard that the Elecraft commands are similar to Kenwood. If so, it might not be too hard to make Chirp work with Elecraft rigs.

There has been an open request for that with Chirp for eight years. Of course, that is an open source, volunteer project, so someone needs to step up and actually do it.

AKIK there's only one memory editor and it works for K3/K3S, KX3 and KX2. I don't know if it will work with the K4.

I use it with my K3 and KX2 and find it to be perfectly adequate, although I don't make frequent changes.

Much like rows in Excel, you can move multiple rows around in the Elecraft Frequency Memory Editor. You can even have two or more instances open in case you want move a large number of rows around. I find it very handy and use the editor almost weekly. I place the weekend's QSO parties suggested frequencies into a block of rows, one column each for CW and SSB. I use the '60' series for 60m and the M1-M4 memories for different modes on each band. A little forethought goes a long way in planning a useful series of memories for each user. Additionally, the Editor makes it easy to 'transfer' memories from one Elecraft HF rig to another. The built-in Help file is, well, helpful. --

NEW HF OPERATORS - THINGS TO DO

Aloha! This weekend will be a wonderful opportunity to get Hawaii into your logbook, as the Hawai`i QSO Party happens then. Kansas and Ohio will also have their events. If you're chasing NPOTA stations, all ten Kansas NPOTA sites will be on the air! If RTTY is more your style, the Slovenia Contest Club's RTTY Championship runs for 24 hours. The KCJ contest is potentially a good place to find the less common Japanese prefectures. If you work all 47 of them, you can apply for the WAJA award from the Japanese Amateur Radio League.

During Labor Day weekend, there are Colorado and Tennessee QSO parties, and if you're working on your CW skills the CWops CW OPEN provides three separate sessions of four hours each over the weekend. Especially on the west coast, there will be plenty of stations involved in the All Asia DX Contest, phone. The three-day weekend could also be a good time to get outside antenna work done for the upcoming contest 'season'.

NEWS, PRESS RELEASES, AND GENERAL INTEREST

There's a new release of the Win4K3Suite, software dedicated to the control of your K3 series of transceivers from your Microsoft Windows computer. Win4K3Suite provides a software panadapter using SDRPlay (showing up to 1.8 MHz bandwidth), LP-PAN, or a video capture board for the P3. This new release has improved SDRPlay performance and fixes an issue with the Elecraft Frequency Memory Editor files.

During the recent NAQP Phone contest on August 20th and 21st, you likely heard members of the Florida Contest group using 'Ron' as part of the exchange, in memory and honor of Ron Weitjen, WD4AHZ, who succumbed to cancer earlier this year. Ron was known to many in the WCF section and beyond as a friend and worthy competitor.

On June 21st, an EF0 tornado cut a twelve-mile path across western Howard County. One of the casualties of the storm was the tower for the ten meter antenna at W3LPL. Frank Donovan reports that thanks to very generous volunteer help by dozens of members of the Potomac Valley Radio Club and The Columbia Amateur Radio Association, a new 200 foot tower has gone up in its place. The new tower will be the home of an 8-element ten meter Optimum Wideband Array (OWA) Yagi designed by W8WWV, it itself a refinement of previous designs by K3LR, WA3FET, and NW3Z. The antenna is expected to be up by September, just in time for the upcoming contest season.

Contact with the STEREO-B (Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatories) satellite, which NASA used in the past to obtain greater insight into our sun's behavior, has been re-established after nearly two years of silence. STEREO-B and it's twin, STEREO-A, provide insight on CMEs (Coronal Mass Ejections) and other sun phenomena which are important to radio propagation. NASA's Deep Space Network was used to reach the spacecraft.

A new Yahoo group dedicated to QSO parties has been in existence since April 2015. With the numbers of members currently near one hundred, the group includes those that are interested in participating, as well as many state QSO party administrators and team members. Dave, WN4AFP, who is the Team Leader of the South Carolina QSO Party, values 'the opportunity to share ideas with active QPers. For state QSO party leaders, this is an excellent way to obtain feedback following your event, exchange new rule ideas and more. You can find out what works and what needs to be re-tooled. It's also a great way to build relationships in this contest niche.'

WORD TO THE WISE

Prosign - Accepted as short for 'Procedural Signal': In CW, a sequence of dots and dashes that are used to convey a particular meaning about the communication itself, such as end of transmission, 'SK', over, 'K', or wait, 'AS'. They are written as the concatenation of one or more regular characters, sent or received with no intervening spaces. In contests, you might hear the 'AS' prosign being sent by an operator when she can't yet log a contact due to a rebooting computer or other problem.

The Shack Shine doorknob hanger appeard on my front door last month. It's found a new home hanging off of various knobs in my shack.

Last weekend, while driving to a Multi/2 for the NAQP Phone contest and listening to the radio, I happened on this week's Ted Radio Hour episode, 'Why We Lie', which provided some insights into why people can be dishonest. Dan Ariely, a speaker in the show, has suggested some techniques that could be adapted to the contesting context to discourage cheating: before starting to operate, have the logging program ask the contester to explicitly promise that they will operate within the bounds the rules, and then before they submit their log, promise that their log follows all of the rules.

OPERATING TIP - Call Again Later

Dennis, N6KI, suggests that when running, when you can't copy a station despite multiple attempts, do not just abandon them by just calling CQ. Dennis suggests saying 'I can't copy you well right now, please call again later, or if my signal fades up.' He wants that station to know they are very important to him and not just dismiss them with a 'Sorry, no copy..CQ Contest!' He finds that most will come back due to that courtesy. 'This technique could really pay off when you are winning contests by a small margin of QSOs.'

TECHNICAL TOPICS AND INFORMATION

Jim, KA2RVO, via the Elecraft mailing list, suggested the free online bookSignal Processing For Communications. I skimmed the introductory chapters, and it is interesting enough to add to my reading list, in my case as a potential good review of the mathematical underpinnings for DSP, and how they relate to practical real-world characteristics of communications channels. The book builds on the theory introduced in early chapters to ultimately discuss the design of a modem that provides 2400 baud communications over a telephone-grade channel.

Back in February, AMSAT announced it is seeking volunteers to assist with the technical details and development of Phase 4 'Five and Dime' ground terminals. The satellite will be using the 5 and 10 GHz bands, with an underlying digital transmission transport layer. The technical details are to be 'open source,' and the project's source files are kept on Github. It's interesting to read the weekly progress reports in that portion of the repository, and some of the source code for various DSP receivers that will eventually be posted may find crossover application for controlling skimmer hardware.

Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) is a characteristic of electromagnetic waves that is starting to garner interest as a means to increase the number of signals using a single frequency. Individual signals with different OAM values can be distinguished and apparently do not interfere with one another, according to an article in IEEE Spectrum. (Ward, N0AX)

If you'd like maximum life from your lithium ion batteries, charge them slowly, and try not to continually charge them, according to this article in the New York Times.

VE7BQH maintains UHF/VHF antenna comparison spreadsheets. Recently they've been updated, and uploaded to W7GJ's website. They are also available with an HTML view via dxmaps.com. The tables include information on expected gain figures when stacking them in different common configurations.

Steve, K6OIK, as part of a presentation to the Foothills Amateur Radio Society, has prepared a paper entitled 'Amateur Radio Resources that Save Space'. His secret is to store radio-related books, articles, papers, and so on electronically, or take advantage of resources available online. He also updated a list of radio-useful software on the club's website.

CONVERSATION

Learning Opportunity

Dennis, N6KI, and Levi, KK6NON, operating as NX6T during the August NAQP Phone contest.

After I drove with my daughter from Seattle to San Diego late last week in advance of her junior year of college, I had the opportunity to participate in the NAQP contest as part of the M/2 effort of NX6T. Dennis, N6KI, coordinated the operators from the San Diego Contest Club (SDCC). The station location was on a hilltop, and originally the QTH of Nash, W6HCD (SK). Like many in our hobby, and especially those in southern California, Nash was an engineer, involved in the defense and aircraft industry and even space launches as the Launch Logistics Specialist for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He was consistently generous to the SDCC.

Over the years the noise floor at his location increased, making it increasingly difficult to pick out the weak ones on the low bands. Small lot sizes and development of adjacent properties make low-noise receiving antennas a challenge.

The subject of 'How to be a Good Guest Operator' has been covered in past presentations at Contest University and beyond, and to me it boils down to using guest etiquette, with particular attention to operating as the host desires. I arrived on time, with everything I needed for self-maintenance: water and a sandwich. Dennis provided operator introductions, and a tour of the grounds, and a rundown of the equipment and antenna topology. While the Elecraft K3s were familiar to me, the logging software, Wintest, was not. Thankfully, most logging programs are similar in concept, and my N1MM skills translated well enough. I even learned the hand signals I needed to make or recognize when a new multiplier needs to be worked.

Dennis expressed disappointment in the band conditions - ten meters wasn't opening, and fifteen was marginal. He put me on the 20 meter run station, where I thought the band was great, compared to recent not-as-great conditions in the Pacific Northwest.

Later in the day, the rate went down, and I was moved to the multiplier station. Dennis took the run position. There was time to have snippets of discussion between the contacts, and for us to pay more attention to one another's operating as we had to coordinate to get multipliers.

The exchange for NAQP is name and the state. At one point, I received the name 'Victor' as the name of the other operator, and I asked for a phonetic spelling, as I have friends who are named Victor and others named Viktor. After I completed the contact, Dennis told me to log what the name sounded like for phone, and to not waste time getting the exact spelling - the SSB log scoring process would accept alternative spellings. Between contacts, I expressed my incredulity that this would actually occur. Dennis was 'staunch in his conviction.' I didn't ask for any more spellings of names that had alternatives.

After the contest, I followed up with Bill, AC0W, NAQP SSB Contest Manager, with this particular example. His response was thoughtful, detailed, and insightful. I'll summarize, and any mistakes are mine, and mine alone. Note that this absolutely does NOT apply to the CW and RTTY NAQP contests, because in those events, you are copying the actual letters of the names in the exchange.

FOR PHONE NAQP ONLY, it turns out that for many common names, the log checking software will accept alternative spellings. For example, 'Brian' could be the operators name, but the receiving operator could log 'Bryan' and still be credited with the QSO.

The alternate-name database is likely not exhaustive, and probably only covers common names. So if someone gives you a name that is uncommon, it's best to ask for a phonetic spelling.

Note that this only works for sound-alike alternatives. For example, if you know the other operator by their call, and their real name is 'Richard' but they're sending 'Dick,' you have to log 'Dick' to be credited for the contact. Log what is sent!

Sometimes in a contest, an operator will start out with one name, realize it's too long or too difficult to communicate, and then change their exchange in the middle of the contest. The log checking software can detect this situation, and QSOs made with the fickle station both before and after the change will be credited.

Remember, these are the guidelines for PHONE NAQP only, as I think understand them. Wow! Here's another example of the care, dedication, and thoroughness that a contest sponsor employs when scoring your logs. Vehicle Inspection

Installing The Control Box

Once the winch is properly mounted, the control box can be attached to the bull bar.

This bar does not have holes for mounting a control box; and the bracket has been removed from the control box to mark holes for drilling.

A rag or piece of cardboard used here will prevent drill swarf from ruining the winch rope.

Wiring The Control Box

Connecting the control box to the winch motor is straight forward. Each wire features a uniquely colored rubber boot which corresponds with the terminal it connects to.

The remaining two wires; the large black earth cable and the small black earth cable are to be attached to the bolt on the opposite side of the motor.

Nearing the end of the install, the power and earth cables must be run straight to the vehicles starting battery.

Most vehicles should not require the wiring to be extended, but in cases such as this – extending the cables can be done by purchasing extra cable - and using appropriate joiners and tools to crimp them together.

Testing

Once your winch is connected to the battery, it is time to give it a test. The hand control can be used either wireless by connecting the receiver to the control box, or wired – by running the included cable between the control box and the hand piece.

Use of a fuse, or some circuit interrupting device, is highly recommended. A better idea would be to use a breaker. High amp fuses are costly, and amperage spikes are not uncommon when winching. ● Secure the pad. The platform should be installed on the fixed part of the chassis. Move the free unwind handle from the “free unwind” position, pull the rope through the jaws, put on the hook.

● Install and connect the control unit. The control unit should be located near the winch motor, in order to make it easy to use. Ropes must not cross any surfaces that could be damaged, and certainly, no people should be around.

● Before starting, check that the rope is evenly screwed. Throw a rag or jacket on the rope closer to the hook. If the rope is torn, the clothes or rag will act as a damper and prevent the rope from being dropped.

● Give a load on the rope, so that it is evenly wound. Continue working under the load until you remove the car.
