Hey there! Sorry, but I couldn't really find too much on what counts as dark and morbid in the goth scene, so I wrote more general HCs, I hope that's alright still ^^;

Valeria and Laswell with a Gothic!S/O

Valeria: She’d most definitely be intrigued, but not too much. In all honesty, she doesn’t know too much about the subculture, she’s never really met a goth who was clearly one. However, if it makes you happy, that’s all that matters to her. While she won’t really know too many bands, or any at all, she’d be more than happy to listen to a few if you want her to. Yes, she won’t always have the time, but when she isn’t too busy she could put on some songs by Joy Division or The Cure, she really doesn’t mind. She can vibe to that sort of music, even if it isn’t her favorite. You’re more than welcome to discuss the literature with her, though. She’s probably never read a single gothic literature book, but she can buy you some. Anything from poetry to a regular novel, it’s quite alright. While she won’t be the best person to go to when it comes to discussing those, she’ll support you either way. However, something she could definitely enjoy would be going clothes shopping with you. The fashion is kind of nice, she has to admit, so she’d be more than happy to buy you whatever garments you desire. Will go out of her way to find something you might like as well. I can’t see her being too much into the history of goth culture, though. It’s nice that you are a goth, if you want to tell her about it, then you can and she’ll listen to you, but she likely doesn’t have the time to research everything by herself. Tell her about its roots and she can definitely appreciate you going against what’s mainstream and how it all came to be. She’s a very defiant and rebellious woman herself, so she definitely gets it.

Laswell: She knows so many people, I wouldn’t be surprised if she has worked with goths before. And even if she hasn’t directly, she’s likely seen quite a few walking around the city. She usually grows worried for them in summer since their attire is black, which makes it quite hot. However, she’d be very intrigued by you and your subculture. It’s something very near and dear to you, so she would put in the effort to learn about your history. Will give some classic bands a listen as well. She just really wants to have something to talk about with you. Besides, she gets to learn more about you. While she may not be the biggest fan of your interest in death, considering she’s surrounded by it more often than not, she’d be more than happy to indulge anything else it has to offer. Laswell spent a good chunk of life left alone with her thoughts, so she definitely knows a thing or two about melancholy, the state of the world and introspection. Maybe not in the same way you do, but she can definitely keep up in a conversation. She’s likely also unintentionally read some of the more popular gothic novels out there and liked them, so she’d make for a good discussion partner as well. While she doesn’t particularly understand the need to make your face completely white, she doesn’t mind. In fact, she thinks it looks quite cool, even if it’s not for her. However, the fashion in and of itself looks really good to her. Again, she wouldn’t want to wear it, but something about Victorian and Edwardian fashion has a certain something to it that she can’t quite place. Like Valeria, she’ll definitely buy you things she thinks you might like. Anything from a suit or a corset to a book about poetry. Beware, though, she will read the books before you can.

Today: I Dream In Another Language (2017)

I watched this movie a few weeks ago, and it STUCK.

(Don Evaristo and Don Isauro just before their first interview to record Zikril together.)

I Dream in Another Language is a Mexican magic realism movie about the death of a culture. It documents the efforts of a linguist trying to save the (fictional) language Zikril, spoken only by three old indigenous people. When one of them dies, the studies come to a halt, as the other two, Don Evaristo and Don Isauro, have not spoken to each other in over fifty years and categorically refuse to have anything to do with each other. As he looks further into this, the linguist discovers that the real reason for this feud is their past relationship and an awful lot of internalized homophobia.

Zkril is an artificial language, created specially for this movie out of respect for the people who still speak the endangered and disappearing languages today. The fact that it has seemingly magic powers, and that its speakers appear to be living on after their death, clearly puts the story into the magic realism genre.

This is NOT a happy movie. The internalized homophobia part is no joke, and the main theme of course is the loss of a language, and the culture that comes with it. 

But it damn sure is leaving an emotional impact.

I strongly suggest that everyone who is even vaguely interested in this subject read up about languages and language conservation. The Wikipedia page of this movie is as a good place to start as any, since there are related articles linked in the references list. I also would like to thank @celluloidrainbow for bringing this film to my attention.

Making of Monday

More of a fun fact than a making of, but I struggle a lot to not edit as I go, which slow me down so much, and a while ago I read a writing tip that said that setting the font to something you can't read helps with that (since you can't read it you can't edit and you keep writing). Small talk had been easy, with their shared background in firefighting. Buck could have listened to Tommy tell stories about air rescues all night, but the other man had been adept at drawing stories from him, too. 

They hadn’t lacked for conversation once - until Eddie had appeared. 

Then… well, Buck knew exactly what had happened after that. He’d fucked up, even earlier than he usually did.

Here's one final snippet before I finish this 5+1 up tomorrow!

Britta turned around as fast as she possibly could, closing the door with a bang. That was certainly far more of Mark Webber than she had ever planned on seeing.  She paced down the corridor, fingers pinching the bridge of her nose. This was going to be a fucking disaster, a train wreck if it ever got out. She should definitely ask for a raise. She heard a thump from inside, muffled cursing, the clink of a belt. A few seconds later the door opened again, revealing Sebastian – thankfully fully clothed this time. He looked a little winded, hair mussed, with a bright red blush colouring his cheeks and several darker red marks littered around his collar bones, partially visible under the loose collar of the shirt. Mark’s shirt, Britta would have guessed. His belt hung undone, bare feet on linoleum. “Britta!” he chirped, still catching his breath as he stepped out and shut the door firmly behind him, “Hi!”  “Sebastian,” she began, trying to work out what she was even meant to say in this situation. She tried not to look at the marks under the shirt collar, failing miserably. She went with something simple, something that would convey her emotions accurately. “What the fuck?”

every other poster on the tube right now is advertising a new musical called ‘the time traveller’s wife’. for a blissful moment i forgot that a ‘wife’ is something that a heterosexual woman can be, and, believing it to be a beautiful lesbian tale akin to tihylttw, decided to google the synopsis to see if it was worth checking out. big mistake. ‘man first encounters his future spouse as a young girl, returns to kiss her at 18 and marry her in the future, remaining the same age as barely any time passes for him meanwhile she spends years alone pining for her distant angel’ blinks. what does that remind me of. oh yeah apparently this came before. i’m already suffering through series 5 at the current moment, so, plenty enough of that for years to come, thank you, and— what a surprise— the novel the musical’s based on was a primary inspiration for you-know-who’s weird fixation on this particular plotline. the worst part about the time traveller’s wife is that there aren’t even any cool steampunk clockwork droids or gorgeous 18th century french dresses to make up for the vomit-inducing implications. i have never been more disappointed. mind wipe, now

#in hindsight it’s funny how enamoured i was with tgitf when i first watched it. because i had in my inexperience considered it original and #clever. instead of a rehashed version of a story that already exists and is just as awful when you think about this ‘romance’ for over 2 #minutes. and then he does it AGAINNN #babe wake up it’s beating steven moffat with hammers monday #so this is where the poison root spread from. i’m going back in time to erase the novel from existence so he never reads it. come up with #better ideas. also leave little girls alone #i still love tgitf but only for the reasons above. the aesthetic and the scifi aspect. and the tragedy i GUESS. kinda because for reinette #it’s a tragedy but for ten it’s literally like. five hours max #do you think he didn’t come back for her on purpose? he couldn’t bring her along because she was too important a historical figure? he left #her there despite promising to pick her up in five minutes. knowing full well she would be gone before he heard of her again #i bet he did that deliberately. had to keep her living in hope because he couldn’t refuse her but he couldn’t take her out of her own life #wow this post veered somewhere else entirely. sorry guys #doctor who #dw #the girl in the fireplace #the time traveler's wife #jamie.txt

Happy Queer Media Monday!

Today: Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

I only watched the movie, but it was quite lovely.

(The original, English book next to a German edition, from a random bookshop in Germany.)

Red, White & Royal Blue is a romance novel originally published in 2019 about a relationship between the son of the US President and a Prince of England. The two start out disliking each other enough to cause an international incident, which leads to their families starting a PR campaign focussing around giving the impression of them being actually friends. During it, they get to know each other better, and soon start a relationship, that they need to keep secret for diplomatic reasons. 

The book was extremely popular upon release and got a lot of positive feedback. It has been made into a movie by Amazon Prime in 2023, and quickly became one of the most watched romantic movies on the platform.
