The Basics
brand of phone & color:
samsung s23, silver.
case:
clear case with a (slightly sun-bleached) polaroid of him and his sister tucked inside. the corners are slightly bent since it's a bit too big.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Usage
screen time:
probably uses it about 4-5 hours a day, depending on the day.
five most used apps:
spotify, messenger, chrome, news, twitter.
web tabs:
generally has no more than 7-10 tabs open at any given time. 5-6 of them are articles he swears he's going to go back and read. 1 of them is a forgotten search tab that he won't remember to close for another day or so. 2 of them are the nightrest news network, permanently open since the murders started. the other 1-2 tabs are interchangeable, and he generally cycles through these for most of his general internet browsing.
google:
last seen doing research, so it was “nightrest news.”
last text messages:
any one of a couple he sent to various friends throughout nightrest, checking up after the fires. prior to that, it was his messages to jieun.
voicemail:
an annoyed message from @jieunparks, calling to say she'd found out he was here in nightrest and that they needed to meet up. he left it there to remember to text her later...and then forgot to delete it. (he's been a bit distracted.) other than that, it's empty—he makes sure to go through it frequently in case any important calls come through.
Social Media
handle:
@namdae on all platforms. he's a basic man. (plus, it's professional.)
instagram:
Tumblr media
[ feat. @kattcalled, @kyleyangs ]
snapchat:
he has an account, but doesn't post, just uses it to keep up with others.
tinder/bumble/hinge/grindr/etc:
doesn't have an account on any of these. never did. never will. he's wary of them.
spotify:
top three songs of 2022: heather by conan gray, runaway by aurora, and cold by corbyn, in no particular order. last played song: youth by kihyun. he was looking for something else, but ended up there somehow, and he wasn't mad about it.
tiktok:
doesn't use it, but will watch videos if others send them to him.
facebook:
he uses it, but only when forced to. barely touches his own account, just has it for family updates.
others:
has a youtube account, but never uploads. his email is primarily used for professional correspondence. uses twitter religiously. someone pull this man away from the bird app. please.
extra:
doesn't often save his contacts with funny names because it makes it hard to find the ones he needs—although he will use nicknames sometimes. uses primarily emoticons while texting rather than emojis because, honestly, he's just too lazy to switch the keyboard. keeps his apps all stuffed into four folders so that he can actually see his background—he hates those people who cover their screens with so much crap that you can't see the picture; why even bother setting one? always forgets to turn off unnecessary app notifications so he generally accumulates a lot of nonsense stuff throughout the day that he just swipes away. doesn't use a screen protector—he just doesn't drop it.
bonus: an additional edit that i spent a ton of time making before i realized there was no room for it. enjoy this article from the future.

COLONY HOUSE releases “Would Ya Could Ya,” in anticipation of The Cannonballers, dropping 2/3/23
Tumblr media
The music of Colony House—an indie rock band made up of brothers Will and Caleb Chapman, as well as Scott Mills and Parke Cottrell—is playfully self-described as “landlocked surf rock.” Their personal genre designation is as much inspired by their hometown of Franklin, Tenn., as their new album The Cannonballers is: within 11 tracks, the band delves into where they come from and how a place, and its memories, have made them. “It’s too easy getting sucked into the grind of everyday life… the hustle and the hurry we all willingly subject ourselves to,” Caleb says of the newest single. “‘Would Ya Could Ya’ is about breaking the mold. At surface level, it’s a ‘let’s get outta here’ open road, never look back type of cruiser, but beneath the surface, I think it recognizes that we are often the obstacle standing in our own way and that it’s up to us to make the next move.” Following the February 3rd release of The Cannonballers, Colony House will embark on a national tour, kicking off on February 11th at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. Dates HERE.  The Cannonballers marks the band’s fourth full-length release: their three previous studio collections take listeners on a journey through stories of loss, grief, and heartbreak while welcoming them into the hope that comes on the other side. Their 2014 debut, When I Was Younger, included the single “Silhouettes,” which became the #1 most played track on Sirius XM’s Alt Nation for four months straight. Only The Lonely, whose title and demeanor pay tribute to the vintage sounds of Roy Orbison and the Beach Boys, followed in 2017. The surf-rock hit, “You Know It,” went viral on Tik Tok, and has amassed 100 million streams across all platforms to date, after being featured as the soundtrack to Samsung Mobile’s nationwide ad campaign. Leave What’s Left Behind was released in January of 2020; the band managed to play half of their 40 city headline tour before being forced to pause alongside the rest of the world. Like many touring artists, they found different ways to continue to create, producing and directing a full-length feature film, “Everybody’s Looking For Some Light,” which was an official selection at the Nashville and Knoxville Film Festivals. The movie debuted at a two-day drive-in event produced by the band at Greystone Quarry in Franklin, TN. Over 2,000 people (in over 600 cars) showed up to watch the film and see Colony House perform. The band has performed their songs for worldwide audiences with two appearances on both Late Night with Seth Meyers and CONAN, as well as The Today Show, VH1’s “Morning Buzz,” and MTV Live. They have also been part of several festival lineups including Shaky Knees, Austin City Limits, Firefly, WonderBus, and Lollapalooza. 2023 will see them adding Bonnaroo to that already impressive list. The Cannonballers is an apt addition to the band’s catalog, staying true to what Colony House does best, and expanding on what their fans have gravitated to for the past decade: hope and light in the midst of it all. No frills, no gimmicks. Just heart-level rock and roll music. The Cannonballers is now available to PRE-SAVE and will be out everywhere on February 3rd, 2023. Everyone I Love’s in This Place
Tumblr media
Paring: Dad!Bucky x Mom!Reader
Children: Jamie (James Jr.) and Eden, ages 9 and 8
Summary: There are some places that always manage to feel like home. And after spending time with the Wilson family and their friends in Delacroix, you can safely say that the little community is one of them. Even more so when you get to dance with them into the night.
Word Count: 1.4k
A/N: Consider this an ode to togetherness and good times. There's lots of warmth with cuteness and humor sprinkled in. The title is a line from the song "Idle Town" by Conan Gray, and I thought it was fitting for this story. I hope you enjoy!
Tumblr media
All it took one glance around the table to let you know that you were right where you belonged. It was a deep knowing that settled within the innermost part of you. The evening air was warm. And along with the sound of utensils meeting ceramic plates, laughter rose up to the sky like an offering. Not a single pair of eyes, from the lightest blue to the darkest brown, was void of light. The faces of those who started off as strangers seemed as though you’d known them for a lifetime. As if you’d personally been around to see the genesis of their smile lines or spent countless hours with them under the Delacroix sun.
The Wilson’s were hosting Thanksgiving. After settling into a rental along a bayou the previous day, you, Bucky, and the kids had swung by to assist with last minute prep. A few of their cousins were at the family residence as well, and 80s R&B played as you sat in the kitchen assembling centerpieces. They consisted of petite vases and thin artificial berry branches. Small white pumpkins were to be placed around them once on the table. Sarah had already finished cooking everything, and was tidying up the house, though it already seemed presentable. Jamie and Eden were somewhere off playing with Cass and AJ. Bucky and Sam were in the backyard situating the outdoor dining table and seats.
Now, as you sat gathered with everyone, it was nice to see that everything had come together. The rest of dinner carried on with stories and jokes being traded as if they were of the utmost value. When it came time for dessert, you helped Sarah bring out the cakes, pies, and cobblers to the serving table. Within a matter of seconds, a line formed. The children, especially, were ready to have their fill.
“Just so you all know,” Sam began after everyone had settled back into their seats. “My baby sister really did her thing with these desserts. Especially the pecan pie. She let me try some last night, and you’re lucky I even saved y’all any.”
“I believe that’s worth drinking to,” Ghalen said. He was a fisherman and long-time family friend of the Wilsons'. “To Sarah and her magic.” He raised his glass.
“To Sarah,” Everyone echoed.
She smiled and shook her head. “Thanks. There’s no other bunch I’d rather use up all my sugar for.”
Later that evening, everyone settled at the fire pit down by the lake. The tide lapped gently onto the shore and crickets chirped from their places tucked within the grass. Above, the sky was a rich blue, and the remaining sunlight casted the color onto the face of the water. There was no denying a certain stillness had settled over the group. But it wasn’t void of life. There was still plenty of that as people took turns sharing memories and expressing what they were thankful for. Every so often, Bucky would take a swig from his beer. The air of ease surrounding him had yet to fade. It was a good look on him.
At one point, Ghalen began to recount a fishing trip with his father from when he was a boy. He told the story with his whole body, eyes scanning and hands moving. His hair was a bold silver from age, and that only added to his wise demeanor. As Bucky listened, he leaned forward in interest with each new detail and twist. When the man finished, he clasped his hands together and looked around.
“How about some music?” He proposed. “I could go for a few tunes right about now. Hope I didn’t put anybody to sleep.”
“Absolutely not, Len. I don’t see a single shut eye,” Ciara, cousin to Sarah and Sam, spoke up. “You’re one of the best storytellers around these parts.”
“Well, thank you. I appreciate that.”
“'Course.” The smile she gave him was ethereal. “I say we crank up some classics for old times’ sake,” she said. “Hey, Ace, did you bring your portable speaker out here?” Ace was her teenage son.
“Yeah, it’s right here,” he picked it up from its place on the ground. “Anyone got a request?”
“It’s never the wrong time for some Marvin Gaye,” said one of Sarah’s friends.
“True,” Ciara chuckled. “I had 'Ain’t No Mountain High Enough' on repeat all last week. Everybody else down for Gaye?
There were no objections, and the very song she mentioned was settled upon. It featured Tammi Terell.”
As soon as the first few notes broke into the air, heads began to bob as feet tapped. Seeing it as a perfect opportunity to get attention, some of the children sprung up from their chairs and began grooving. Eden, being among them. She joined hands with one of the girls she’d been talking to all evening, and they hopped around and took turns spinning each other. A few of the adults jumped up as well, and when the chorus rolled around, they belted it into the night.
‘Cause baby, there ain’t no mountain high enough
Ain’t no valley low enough,
Ain’t no river wide enough
To keep me from getting to you, baby
Towards the end of the song, Jamie had taken your hand and coaxed you up for the remainder. With those pretty blue eyes that looked just like his father’s, it was impossible to resist. You smiled until your cheeks hurt. As the final notes drifted into the air, an applause rose from those who had remained seated. Bucky was one of them. He was relaxed back into his chair with his legs a part in a small man-spread. When he caught your gaze, you got butterflies from the adoration that was radiating straight to you.
If only the night and the feelings it fostered could’ve lasted forever. After losing yourself to the countless songs that went on to play, it eventually came time for the last one. A classic by The Temptations.
I’ve got sunshine on a cloudy day
When it’s cold outside
I’ve got the mouth of May
I guess you’d say
What can make me feel this way
My girl, my girl, my girl
Sam shot Bucky a look. “Man, you better get up and dance with your girl for this one.” He then drunk from his beer, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand.
Bucky looked to where you were swaying to the rhythm with Jamie, Eden, Sarah, and her boys. Surely, you were the embodiment of beauty and grace. Suddenly, the music began to resonate on a level that compelled him to stand.
“You know what? I think I will.”
Given that your back was turned to him, you startled a bit when he wrapped his arms around your waist and began moving along with you.
“Daddy!” Eden chirped.
“Hey, sunshine.” He smiled down at her. “You guys mind if I steal this one away from you?”
Sarah offered a smile. “Not at all.” With that, Bucky pulled you away from the group.
You wrapped your arms around his neck upon settling in a spot. The light of the fire illuminated his face. “Hey, handsome.” You leaned in to give his lips a sweet peck.
“Hey,” he breathed. “I love watching you enjoy yourself.”
“Well, it sure is easy to have a good time around here. It’s like you can’t help but to.”
“I know. I’m really glad we were able to make the trip. Wouldn’t trade tonight for the world.”
“Me neither.”
I don’t need no money, fortune, or fame
I’ve got all the riches baby one man can claim
Well I guess you’d say
What can make me feel this way
My girl, my girl, my girl
Upon feeling a small tap on his lower back, Bucky turned around. Standing there was a girl with wide eyes and a head full of thick long curls.
“Are you two in love?” She asked.
His brows rose, but then he chuckled and spared you a quick look.
“We are,” he told her.
“That’s nice,” she mused. “I love a lot of people. In fact, everyone I love’s in this place.”
That was easy to believe. Delacroix was just the place to love and be in love. There would never be a big enough thank you to extend to the little community. But as surely as the sun sets at the end of each day, you were going to find a way to come close.

March Week Five Albums.
March 28th: Hounds of Love, Kate Bush
familiarity: i heard Placebo’s cover of “Running Up That Hill” when i was in, like, middle school because i loved a couple of songs off their Sleeping With Ghosts album. listened to the original. didn’t like it as much. relistened to it again a decade later and changed my mind. yes, i’m one of THOSE people. I’M SORRY.
favorite(s) before listen: Running Up That Hill (Deal With God)
favorite(s) after listen: Running Up That Hill (Deal With God), Hounds of Love, Cloudbusting, Waking the Witch, Jig of Life, Hello Earth
March 29th: Here, Here, and Here; Meg & Dia
familiarity: I discovered “Here, Here, and Here” from an amv. don’t ask me for what fandom. i’m a different person now. anyway, i adore it and still love to come back to it now and then. but, I actually discovered Meg & Dia through their song “Monster”.
favorite(s) before listen: Here, Here, and Here; Fighting for Nothing
favorite(s) after listen: Here, Here, and Here; Fighting for Nothing, Going Away, Hug Me, Black Wedding, One Sail, The Last Great Star in Hollywood
standout lyric: “I'm a wanderer now, sorrow befalls me / I laugh often so I suppose I'm gonna be fine / Mozart he said "there's nothing to composing" / And that's all we do, we just / Write and play and write and play and write and”
March 30th: NATURAL, ORANGE RANGE
familiarity: Orange Range was a staple of early 00s anime, so I know a spattering of their songs across numerous albums. “Natural Pop” was and still is my favorite song of theirs. It’s their best song, okay? You can’t tell me otherwise...Asterisk is close though....
favorite(s) before listen: Natural Pop, *~Asterisk~, Kirikirimai
favorite(s) after listen: Natural Pop, *~Asterisk~, Kirikirimai, Rain, sunrise, Love Parade
March 31st: Kid Krow, Conan Gray
familiarity: Discovered Conan through his song, “Maniac”, stayed for his queer hit, “Heather”. Always gotta support young queer artists! I’m familiar with some of his more recent singles like “People Watching” and “Telepathy”, as well as some of his older songs like “Crush Culture”

However, I got a tiktok boosting “On My Own” from this album and really enjoyed what I heard, so I figured it was as good a time as any to check it out. I have heard “Slow Hands” from this album but it never really piqued my interest. As an after listen note, I gotta say that whoever on his team decided that “Slow Hands” should be the single from this album failed Niall miserably.
favorite(s) before listen: N/A
favorite(s) after listen: This Town, Seeing Blind, Paper Houses, Flicker, On My Own, Mirrors

Time’s Up
A/N: Happy happy happy birthday, @mintchocolateleaves!! This one’s for you boo. I tried to cook it up as fast as I could, to get it posted before the day ends but alas... it’s past midnight and all the magic is gone. Nevertheless, enjoy this one! This isn’t for Emogust though, bc sadly it fits none of the prompts. An AU where Conan is back as Shinichi (Black Org is no more, and stuff and stuff).
The day is eventually going to come.
Shinichi knows. He knows that day will come, yet his mind forces itself to erase the thoughts of it. Instead, it’s filled with nothing but false, desperate hope with the image of a beaten, stitched up heart. Shinichi knows. He knows.
His finger plays with the brown hair that he loves touching so much. The smell is intoxicating. Alluring. It’s a smell that belongs to only one person. That one person that means the world to him. That one person that is strikingly similar to a goddess, as she is simply divine and beautifully crafted like an angel. He plants a kiss on her, inhaling the heavenly scent that flutters his heart.
The girl whose head is comfortably resting on his lap lets out a chuckle, voice deep with a texture that makes it one in a million. The girl whose eyes are filled with such powerful emotions that Shinichi couldn’t even describe. Love, he decides. Love, kindness, sincerity, grace, worry, passion, generosity.
Every day Ran makes Shinichi wonder. How someone could always keep a warm, serene smile on her face. Every day, she baffles him.
He wonders why she chooses to stay with him, after years of hiding the truth from her, making her worry, putting her through all the torment. If she’s willing to put his past behind them, then so can he. He can do the same for her and for himself.
They never talk about their lives before he returned as Kudo Shinichi. Only once did she ask for an explanation, and it’s immediately after he revealed himself. He told her everything; about how he’s Conan all along, how Haibara Ai (who’s now around their age) is also another victim of the Organization, how he couldn’t have done it without Hattori and Kaito KID’s help. She’s forgiven him, as always. She can never stay angry at him. She also never wanted to broach the topic ever again.
One time he catches her say, “Remember that haunted inn we went to with Hattori-kun and Kazuha-chan?” when the inn is featured on the television. However, she drops the conversation right after that, the silence reminding him that she was still unwilling to talk.
One thing remains the same, though.
“I’ll always protect you,” Shinichi whispers. Ran smiles. She knows.
Φ
It’s spring. It’s that time where love sprouts everywhere. It’s that time where flowers bloom beautifully, birds singing their songs and grass turns greener than before. It’s that time where the cherry blossoms bloom, drawing tons of couples towards them like a magnet, wanting them to enjoy the romantic vibe.
There’s this one place. There’s this spot with a lone, abandoned cherry blossom tree. It’s not so far in the small woods behind Teitan High.
Thus, during a break at school, they go to the cherry blossom tree whose grace is only for their eyes. Ran intertwines her fingers with Shinichi’s, showing her loveable smile, the smile that he loves so much.
“I love you,” Shinichi says. He blushes. “With all my heart.”
"I love you too," Ran mutters, looking up at him shyly. "With all my heart."
Φ
It’s that time again, when Ran feels that suffocating feeling in her chest. Her breath hitches, gasping for air while droplets of sweat trail down from her temple towards her chin. It’s those times when Shinichi loses his cool and panic, calling the hospital immediately after each time it happens, each time getting worse and worse.
It hurts him even more that whenever Ran faints, she has no knowledge of what happened before. Almost as if she suffers from a very minor amnesia, yet Shinichi never dares to tell her. He always puts on his practiced smile, saying, “You are just here for a check-up. They had to temporarily put you to sleep, that’s all.”
Ran, naively nods, easily accepting those words.
Φ
Shinichi has been visiting Osaka more and more often lately. He knows his bond with Hattori has undoubted deepen after everything that has happened. Seriously, he would’ve been a dead man had Hattori not been there to save him.
What he didn’t expect was that he’s going to rely so much on Kazuha as well.
He has been telling Kazuha about what’s been happening to Ran. At first it’s only to update her about Ran’s condition. Shinichi soon finds that he actually enjoys talking to her. To Hattori’s credit, his girl is very insightful and perceptive. Sometimes Shinichi calls her in the middle of the night just to ask her if she has anything to offer him. A handful of times, Hattori is the one to answer his calls.
“We’re NOT doing anything,” he always insists, “Kazuha just fell asleep while studying.”
Shinichi responds with a snort. “Keep that up and you’re gonna get a serious case of blue balls.”
They end up talking too, until Ran stirs in her sleep and Shinichi has to hang up in fear that he might wake her up.
Φ
There are times where Shinichi forgot how nigh Ran’s time is. The moment their lips are locked into a deep kiss, his mind turns blank, concentrating on the now, never thinking of the past or the future. He loves when the familiar, warm hands trace down his sides to his hip bones, tender fingers sliding south until it reaches the spot that makes his body ache for more. He moans out her name each time she sends Shinichi to ecstasy in such sweet, passionate love making. It’s the moment after, with Ran collapsing next to him on the soft mattress and instantly cuddling against the boy, arms protectively wrapped around his body while nuzzling his neck.
“I’m so glad you’re here,” Ran whispers. “I can’t imagine life without you.”
Φ
Shinichi has tried to contact Kaito Kid—whose real identity he and Hattori found out to be Kuroba Kaito, just a kid around their age. But he insists that he’d come to Shinichi when his time is suitable, when he’s accomplished his own goal.
When they finally set up a meeting, Shinichi did ask him, straight to the point: “Have you used the Pandora Gem?”
Kaito’s eyes betray his confident body gestures. “Are you interested in using it?”
Shinichi offers no reply, his only response is his unfaltering stare at the magician. He runs a hand through his hair, a sigh escaping his lips. “I know you’ve found it, and I know you’ve used it.”
Φ
Shinichi walks on the sidewalk, two plastic bags filled with the needed groceries which bump against his legs with each step he takes. He fiddles with his keys as soon as he reaches their apartment. He opens their front door, stepping in with the bags in his hands, happily announcing he is back with a huge grin on his face.
The house is silent, however. Pressure is felt, and Shinichi feels slight numbness in his legs as he enters the living room, eyes widening at the sight of Ran on the ground. Crystal droplets fall immediately, the sound of items falling and rolling on the ground, voice cracks echoing in the room, the only thing coming out from his throat being none other than the name Ran.
Φ
It all happens so fast. Shinichi is promised at least a year more. One year. A year that they will fill with nothing but happiness, that only she can give effortlessly. The sounds of rushed doctors heading towards wherever ring in his ears. Shinichi can only blindly follow them, attempting to wake Ran up with trembling hands and bottom lip.
Ran, Ran, Ran, is all he says.
Ran, Ran, Ran, he keeps on calling, but her face remains the same: lifeless, pale, drained.
Shinichi has never felt so scared, so afraid. He swears he saw a quick, impossible glance of the colour black. The black that Shinichi has feared to acknowledge so many times in his dreams. The black that is the hollow colour of the long robe that belongs to Death, who is perhaps forcing an implausible grin on his literal skin and meatless face.
“No,” Shinichi whispers, furiously shaking his head as he is forced to stay behind when doctors go past certain doors. He falls to his knees, clutching his hair tightly
No.
Φ
Shinichi has always had his suspicion about Kazuha’s sensitivity towards the supernatural spectrum of the world. If her handcrafted omamori isn’t enough proof, there’s also the fact that she could actually see spirits. A gift from my grandmother, she explains.
Kazuha has also further said about how Death is real. Another reason why she hates being in a crime scene for too long, she confides in him. Death is always present, always ready to transport the souls of poor victims. Kazuha doesn’t like to look at Death. According to her, Death reeks of hollowness and hopelessness, among other things.
Shinichi never quite understands her stories and explanations. He believes in science. He doesn’t believe in such things. He believes in what he can see. He doesn’t believe in what the paranormal and supernatural.
This time, he’s sure Death is definitely calling. Death stands there with arms wide open, wanting to welcome Ran and wanting him to see her lifeless body. Shinichi knows Death is patiently waiting in the dark corners of the sickly colored hospital, it being nothing more than an empty white and some hues of probably blue or yellow. Shinichi doesn’t care.
It’s then when a doctor comes out of what Shinichi calls ‘Doors of Death’. The doctor shows him nothing more but a pity look, his mask hiding any signs of lip movement to warn Shinichi of the hurtful words that are about to come out.
Many doctors and nurses walk by them, and some patients in wheelchairs possibly exploring the area or finding their way out to the exit. All of them spare glances at the man who shouts at the doctor, on his knees once again and hands clutched together in a fist, begging.
Φ
Heiji and Kazuha rush to the hospital as fast as they possibly could. Shinichi staggers towards them, his head shaking continuously. “There’s no time.”
“Time’s up.”
Φ
Ran slowly opens her eyes, frowning at the blinding light of white after being out for what felt like an eternity, shielding them with her hand. She is all by herself. She is in a bed, a transparent tube connected and held secured by a thin, white bandage on her left forearm.
Her confused gaze travels from the dull wall in front of her to the window where she can see the outside world, the sky blue and a few clouds present.
Where am I? She wonders. The sound of a constant beeping echo in her ears, and a doctor soon appears in front of her.
“Congratulations, Ran,” he smiles at her. “You barely survived, but you managed.”
Ran frowns even more. “Barely? What do you mean? What happened?”
The doctor’s smile falters, just a little bit. His eyes are tired, dark circles clearly visible and wrinkles showing. “You had a fatal heart attack, Ran,” he starts. “You’ve always had a weak heart condition which seemed to be accelerating in intensity within the past year.”
“You were found unconscious at home. A young man immediately called, and just in time as well.”
“Shinichi?” Ran gasps. “You mean Shinichi?” She sits up, not caring if she is allowed to or not. “What… where is he?”
“Shinichi… he’s headed out somewhere.” Ran’s expression gradually softens at those words. The doctor then hands her tape. “Here,” he whispers. “He told me to give this to you.”
As soon as the small device left the man’s hands, he calmly makes his way out. Confused and curious, Ran rapidly untangles the earphones, pressing the Play button to play the message that is left in it by Shinichi’s voice. Ran smiles, only for it to completely disappear with each word she hears.
Φ
Time is passing by slowly, almost too slowly. Ran tightly squeezes the tape, holding it against her chest as she lies down, numbly shifting on her side, facing towards the window that holds her away from freedom. She slowly opens her mouth, lips trembling and eyes glazed with tears that allow themselves to roll down over the bridge of her nose and her cheek. She feels a painful lump in her throat. A lump that makes swallowing so, so hard. Her head starts to ache, eyebrows finally furrow together after processing what she just read, gritting her teeth and softly shaking her head in denial.
She finally lost it when she heard soft sobs coming from outside her room. She finally lets out a scream, clutching onto her hair and wetting her face with her tears, curling into a ball as agony took full control over her. With loud and hitched sobs, she whispers ‘no’ over and over again.
Φ
The doctor hears the cries coming out of the room. His back leaning against the space next to its respective door, hallways filled with nothing but an eerie silence and a vast emptiness. He quietly turns around, letting his forehead rest against the cold barrier and let his own tears spill. His own heart aches, wanting to rip it out, if only he could.
His nails scratches the walls, hands eventually curling up into a fist and screamed silently, gasping for air as he lets out choked sobs.
Φ
Ran,
I’m guessing you already know the truth by now.
I’ve kept you away from the truth, again. Once more, I’ve kept away a secret from you that you deserved to know, yet I always decided to keep my door shut. Not because I think you’re better off not knowing, but it’s ‘cause I never had the guts to. I can’t lose you. Not now, not ever.
Nothing can come close to describing the happiness I felt whenever you woke up. Who was there to blame for the condition of your heart? I thought I could be your donor, so long as you can continue to wake up. I wish we could have more time together.
I was told that you have a long way to go. At least a year, was what they said. They over-calculated. My biggest mistake was trusting their words.
Don’t look for me. This time—I promise you—I’m not on a long and deadly case. I’m not shrunken into a grade-schooler either! I’m just... just refer to me as your guardian from now on. Guardian angel, if you wanna push it that way, but Kazuha said guardian angels are not actually angels.
What you need to know is that I’ve beaten Death. You’ll live, and that’s all that matters to me. I’m always here for you and I’ll always protect you.
Ran, you know I love you. I always have, and I always will.
Φ
Shinichi told her that he has no choice. He has even looked for the Pandora Gem and actually knows where it is. The current owner of the gem is also willing to lend it to him.
It’s Kaito Kid, he confesses to Kazuha. And Kaito did warn him about the effects of using the gem.
Shinichi knows that Ran wouldn’t want it.
Kazuha has been thinking about this for a long time, hard. She knows if she was to do it, if she could even pull it through, if it would even succeed—Ran is never going to forgive her. But when she puts herself in Shinichi’s shoes, she knows she would do it for Heiji in a heartbeat. Part of her believes that if the situation was reversed, Ran would want to do the same for Shinichi.
But Shinichi has already had his mind made up. Kazuha looks at him, the boy who has been growing closer to her lately, who she talks to even more than Ran or Sonoko these days. Kazuha stares at him, and he stares back at her through his cloudy eyes.
In the end, he doesn’t even know if he was putting Ran’s happiness first or his own.

Tag Game!
So I was tagged by the lovely @livefree-and-diestrong in not one, but TWO tag games under the read more! :> This was super fun to do and I really liked learning more about you from your own post Ree!
× share 5 little things about yourself that people might not be able to tell without seeing you in person, and tag a few people you want to get to know!
I played piano back in middle school up until my undergraduate years before I stopped which was about 7-8 years? I only recently picked it back up again after being inspired when I heard First Love by Yoongi.
During the time I stopped music I picked up knitting and crocheting because I really like making stuff with my hands. I like making shawls in particular so if I’m ever wearing a shawl or a cardigan, there’s a 98% chance I’ve made it~ 😘
I yell about this in the tags all the time but I really am 5′0′′ (152.4cm). I haven’t grown since middle school uGH
My trip to Japan this year was actually the first time I’ve ever traveled internationally!! 💖💖💖
I also did ballet and acrobatic dance up until middle school, which is why I have so much admiration for persons so dedicated to the craft ✨

2018 best (and some worst)
2018 was the shittiest year of my life personally and I was a trainwreck almost instantly. I was real hopeful going in, but I got my heart broken as badly as I could get (and it somehow just kept getting worse). Ugh. It’s boring to articulate, but it was a never-ending Russian nesting doll of heartbreak, disappointment, and frustration. But I made more positive changes in the last 12 months than I did in the last 12 years. So that’s something.
TV Funniest go-to show: Desus and Mero (wish they didn’t go on hiatus when they left for Showtime) Favorite shows: 1) Big Mouth 2) Atlanta 3) Killing Eve 4) Bodyguard 5) Haunting of Hill House
Other shows I enjoyed: American Vandal; Homecoming; Americans; GLOW; Better Call Saul; Succession; Cobra Kai; Kominsky Method; Corporate Meh: Barry; Sharp Objects; Who Is America?; Daredevil Favorite Comedy specials: 1) Rory Scovel 2) Bert Kreischer 3) John Mulaney
MOVIES 4 ½ stars: Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse; Sorry to Bother You 4 stars: Quiet Place; Hereditary; Mission Impossible: Fallout; Blackkklansman; Deadpool 2 3 ½ stars: To All the Boys…; Incredibles 2; Game Night; Revenge 3 stars (solid rental): Game Night; Upgrade; Revenge; Ant-Man; Hold the Dark 2 ½ stars (OK rental): Black Panther; Avengers Meh: Love Simon; Support the Girls Probably Good but bored the shit out of me: Roma; First Reformed; Eighth Grade Hated: Mandy; Ballad of Buster Scruggs
STILL NEED TO SEE: Bad Times at El Royale; Bodied; Creed 2; Death of Stalin; Favourite; First Man; Free Solo; Green Book; Halloween; If Beale Street Could Talk; Minding the Gap; Solo; Star is Born; Vice; Widows
MUSIC Favorite Records: 1) Brian Fallon-‘Sleepwalkers’ 2) Story So Far-‘Proper Dose’
1975 has great songs but they have too much filler in their records. Damn good songs: Foxing-‘Nearer My God’; Wonder Years-‘Pyramids of Salt’; Thrice-‘Beyond the Pines’ PODCASTS Favorite Podcasts personally: -Filmdrunk Frotcast (Movies/comedy) -Dollop (history PLUS comedy) -Bill Burr’s Monday Morning Podcast (one-man rant from the best comic alive) -Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend (comedy + conversations) -Rewatchables (Movies/comedy) -Bill Simmons (conversations) -Pardon My Take (sports + comedy) -Chapo Trap House (leftist politics + comedy) -Press Box (media)
Intercepted’s takedown of George HW Bush is great. That show and Citations Needed has its moments. I think if you’re a historian/leftist, the best podcasts are Hardcore History or Common Sense (Dan Carlin), Citations Needed, Intercepted, Chapo Trap House, and the Dollop. Dan Carlin is the one you can enjoy if you’re on ANY political spectrum—and the Dollop is not too far behind; that’s truly the most special when it hits.
Other: My Favorite Murder; Revisionist History; Matty + Nick; Hound Tall; We’ll See You in Hell; Binge Mode: Harry Potter; Bertcast/Open Tabs; Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez
Re-listening to Walking the Room for the 3rd time; that’s my favorite podcast of all time. Late pass: ‘Embedded’ series on Trump is amazing. Doesn’t come out often but when it does? Fascinating and goes in on Trump stories that don’t get talked about. Podcasts I’d recommend: In the Dark; RFK Tapes; Slow Burn (S2 on Monica Lewinsky scandal is great)
‘In the Dark’ is by far the best. S1 in 2016 I prefer over S2; check out both.  Podcasts I’m going to check out: Crimetown: Detroit; Serial S3
Vince Mancini (Filmdrunk/Uproxx) has an annual best list on the best investigative/true crime podcasts each year that are the best lists I’ve seen. Best Dollop Episodes of the Year (must-listens on serious subjects): Donald Trump; the Resnicks: Water Monsters; George HW Bush; John McCain; Wells Fargo; Erik Prince & Blackwater
The above subjects deal with subjects to be genuinely outraged about versus faux things to be outraged about everyday (Russia; Louis CK or what a comic said) and the way the media talks or ignores subjects completely. The way it’s done is so great (Dave reading a topic coldly while his friend interjects with commentary—and then in the end coming together with a South Park-esque take on what the fuck is happening)
Other: Feinstein and the Flag; Levittown: the White Suburb Funniest episode of the Dollop:  1908 New York to Paris Car Race (live w/ James Adomian). Hands down the funniest. Dave purposely saved a great one for the fucking great and underrated James Adomian.
I can tune in and out of some Dollop episodes, but when it goes in on a subject or has a particular guest, you know it’s going to hit.
BOOKS Favorite book: City of Thieves by David Benioff Late pass great: ‘Slaughterhouse Five’ Pretty good: ‘Devil in White City’; ‘Lexicon’ Meh: ‘Sirens of Titan’ Hated: ‘the Bell Jar’
Best twitter follows/online writers: Justin Halpern; Drew Magary; Brian Grubb
BEST EVENTS: 1) Gaslight Anthem 59 Sound 10th Anniversary 2) Boston Calling: the National, Menzingers, Queens of the Stone Age, the Killers 3) Bert Kreischer @ Wilbur: near front row 4) Bill Burr @ TD Garden 5) Pats-Titans playoff game
Biggest regret and disappointment: Moving my ‘ex’ into my friend’s house in January (with the hope that I’d be living there half the time too)—only for her to end up wanting NOTHING at all to do with me that same day after I helped her unpack out of nowhere, threaten suicide in a non-joking manner in front of her new roommates and my friend after a political argument at the end of the first night she moved in, get with someone we work with behind my back almost instantly (a bland and lame cokehead who got busted for cocaine 18 months prior and faced 7 years in jail), try to fuck my friend when I was mid-conversation with them both first time seeing her 3 months after it all ended—and for her to eventually date my friend’s roommate who my friend warned me would try and fuck her but I didn’t take seriously because I thought he wasn’t good looking, tiny, just vaped all day long, and kind of a douche. Cool. Awesome.
I mean, that’s a simplistic breakdown of it all and how I feel about it when I’m angry. It’s more complex and fucked up than that and I could write a book on it to elaborate my thoughts, good and bad. It’s genuinely heartbreaking to articulate it and I withheld that from her:  part of the reason why I moved her into my friend’s place (she didn’t know him or anybody) was because I wanted her in my life and didn’t want to lose her. Instead, it felt like I locked myself out of a party, I’m banging on the door and it’s cold outside, but nobody hears me. It’s just that feeling constantly. At the same time, it’s also very simple: she just wasn’t that into me, valued me, gave a damn, respected me, or cared. It’s NOT as angry or mean as it sounds. It just is what it is. Do NOT move the person you’re seeing into a friend’s place. If it doesn’t work out, make sure you can get a clean break. Oh, and probably do NOT date at work if you can until you know one of you is leaving (or, in my case, she leaves 10+ months after it’. I fucked both up and it’s been impossible to move on. Thankfully, she just left work 2 weeks ago and there’s less anxiety, mental work (thinking about her all the time which I still do but it’s not on maximum overdrive) and tiny heartbreaks each day. I mean, I was devastated when she told me she was leaving and there was finality. I miss her and have missed her all this time, but it’s a good thing: there was nothing I was getting out of it. But still: why did she say yes to moving into MY friend’ s place if she was just going to do a 360 heel turn, be an asshole and resentful towards me out of nowhere, never bother seeing the place I moved into/what I did with it?. Just a disaster of my own creation. I like to think in time I’ll get over it all and move on. I highly doubt I’ll ever see or talk to her again. I refuse to ever go back to my friend’s house for a variety of reasons and I had those thoughts even before the Cinco de Mayo party, but definitely after. I just don’t belong there and it hurts. And I know she’s uncomfortable too if I’m there even if she says otherwise.
Best thing personally: my brother got married, his wedding, friends, and my family. It’s cool to see my brother have his life together, be married into an awesome family, and meet a nice girl. I’ve seen my brother have his heartbreaks, but it’s nice to see him finally have peace and consistency. He’s got a really great house near where the Pats play (closer than where we’d park to games), works 4 days a week and makes bank too.
BIGGEST CHANGES I MADE moved out to a place of my own in late January-it’s my uncle’s 3-decker, which he intends to pass on to me. So I’m saving $ by being here and it’s decent. The drawback is that it’s 3rd floor and inhospitable during the summer when it’s an oven with no windows where they should be to put an AC unit in (I just stayed at my parents: I would have toughed it out but I desperately need sleep for school). But yeah, I’m over 30 and needed a place of my own. I’d love to live in Boston, but it’s completely fucking unaffordable unless you work 2-3 jobs.
One annoying thing: my driveway gets egged EVERY day since May. We have fake cameras, but pretty sure it’s the next-door neighbor and not some punk kids on their way to school. It is enraging. Who eggs a house everyday? And it’s literally only my car or the lady next to me, not even close to the street. I keep on looking at the trajectory of the eggs and it’s fucking ridiculous. Luckily, because of school (and because I was away during the summer), the egging doesn’t happen until after 8-10 AM.
I’m 10 minutes from my parent’s place (halfway to my workplace and gym as a cut-off place), 5 minutes from the school I attend, and centrally located to things I want to be (Boston, my brother, Cape Cod, possible job changes or to where I intend to move if I can)… went to school to be an electrician-In school 715 to 1245 Monday-Friday. Pain in the ass schedule and tiring, but a big change. I suck at being handy. Most people are sons of people in the trade or went to trade school. Then there’s me: never picked up a drill or a hammer. But I’m working on it.
I mean, the job IS risky (it’s not an office job) and any job outside of going back to school for a master’s or doctorate to get ahead (I fucking tried!) requires backbreaking manual work that breaks you down in most cases (construction, plumbing and smelling bad to even fixing cars where I hear that breaks your body down). Being an electrician seemed like the least of them all unless you want to be a linesman stuck outside no matter the weather for National Grid or down in manholes—because they pay REALLY well (most people in class actually want those jobs without reservations). I’m fine with being paid pretty well while enjoying myself. I’ll stay away from something monotonous like solar panels or being on a roof all day though.
Jiu-Jitsu-did this for 3 months and loved it. Had to take a break because I can only do weekends and it’s expensive. And I’m too exhausted for 9 AM class come Saturday. After a 6 AM to 12AM schedule M-F, I just completely fucking crash come Saturday. I fully intend on going back and doing yoga too when I finish school in July.
Most people start doing jiu-jitsu because of Joe Rogan. My answer got a laugh. ‘Yeah, I wanted to try something new. Also, I watched John Wick about a 100 times.’
Therapy-post ‘break-up’ I realized I needed help. I spent a month in February not being able to fall asleep (maybe 24 hours sleep in 3 weeks) before I finally got meds. About a million waking nightmares (holy shit that’s a thing). Constantly crying, particularly on the weekends without her, separation anxiety and just anxiety that did not go away at all: a constant weight. We had a Jim-and-Pam relationship at work, even when it was over—but once she started dating my friend’s roommate, she distanced herself more than ever and it was just fake as fuck. I was frustrated with not finding a job to not passing a test that I studied my ass for 3+ months for that would allow me to leave my job AND the girl. They threw in shit that was not on the study guide at all in the test. Blah. I punched a hole through my bedroom wall (like they do in the movies) and fucked up my hand a bit.
But yeah, I’m working on my confidence, following through with my goals, challenging myself, making adjustments, facing fears, getting over my anxiety, relationships. I’m proud of how, even without therapy, I handled the girl who was cold and distant: I was ALWAYS warm and welcoming, had a good attitude about it with her. It wasn’t a point of pride to be that way; I just was. If I was around her, the hurt just kind of all faded, however briefly. In the back of my head I wanted to light her the fuck up for how she was acting or NOT acting, but I just didn’t. But it’s hard. I am depressed all the time, but not nearly as overwhelming as I was. I’m really lonesome—and I want to reach out, but I don’t know to who a lot of the time. I feel left out and it’s hard to maintain relationships, but I am trying. It’s hard at 32 but people fade away. You think you’re wiser and more mature that it won’t happen, but it does. It’s just harder to make friends, I guess. I ruminate all the time and think too much. I’m trying to be mindful and in the moment. But I keep on thinking about all the things I’m NOT doing or the things I’m waiting for to happen. But there’s always going to be that. I am doing a LOT and the changes aren’t coming all at once. I like my therapist (I had one when I was in 5th grade and again when I was 19: I didn’t like them: finding a therapist that fits you is the biggest thing)
I realized a lot of the problems I had were patterns even going back to the heartbreak I felt at 18-20 when I was the worst mess I ever was. It wasn’t the girl who broke my heart, but it was me. I should have been better and stronger far before I met her. I wasn’t really living I don’t think. In some ways, I gave up and was sleepwalking through things. But everything I thought I was past just bubbled to the surface. And I had to get it right, something needed to change, and I needed help.
I withheld my problems from everybody because I didn’t want to be a burden. I especially did NOT want to be depressing but I think I became a burden for the girl who broke my heart. She had nothing to give and she was upset at me for talking to her at work and being cheerful, telling stories, or anything. Secretly, I was a mess and it was painful. In a way, I was denying myself and that made it worse.
Here’s the thing: I don’t think I’m that big of a mess. I might be lonely, but I got a good head, attitude, and people generally like me. I make people laugh easily and without trying. I got a lot going for me and I got support.
Tattoos -got the lighthouse tattoo I always wanted since I was 18. I didn’t believe a tattoo artist could carry out my idea. Liked the tattoo artist so much that I stretched it out into a full sleeve. I want to do more and have some ideas. We’ll see.
Other-new car; collecting board games; got tour posters and Pats memorabilia framed WORST POLITICAL: the chaos that comes with Trump-Well, that hasn’t changed. I’ll hate the GOP/Republicans and that goes without saying. I have some small hope with people like Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, but I don’t have any faith in the Democratic party at fucking all: they will rather work with Republicans than work with people who actually want to make an actual change. You kind of just realize how shitty a party they and Obama were and how they are bought/paid for and resistant to any meaningful change. We are fucked.
LOOK AHEAD TO 2019: -finishing school in July and starting new career as electrician -cousin’s wedding and going to Las Vegas for a bachelor party (I’m more psyched for the awesome house we are staying in than Vegas itself) -Pats playoff run and possible end of Brady-Gronk: I’m not hopeful, but I’m going to enjoy my favorite Boston athletes of my lifetime. Couldn’t ask for anything more from them. I just wish Bill Belichick did a better job as a GM and not fucking up nearly every draft since 2006 besides 2010 and 2012. They’ve won 5, but feels like Belichick cost the Pats 3-5 more minimum. Every year you have Tom Brady, you’re in the AFC Championship or Super Bowl. Belichick and Patricia mailed in the Eagles Super Bowl on defense. WTF was that? -doing jiu-jitsu, yoga, taking up swimming, continue following through on my gym program: my goal is to delay having a bad back as long as possible. I’m in the best shape of my life by far, so that’s good. I want to cut some of my gut weight out though: when I bend down to put on my work boots, I feel it. -more tattoos? -dating again (I am struggling so BADLY with online dating and need to work on having better pics: I can’t get a single match/date) -looking at buying a condo or home. I’ve got about $100K saved up and just slowly collecting things in my apartment for the big transition. Still would like to see where I end up working. Ideally, I’d love to have a lake house somewhere decent and centralized.

Black Coffee Love Pt. I
Pairing: Reader x Seb
Featuring: Sebastian Stan, the barista
Warning: fluff
Prompt: your favourite coffee shop happens to be the spot he decides to take shelter from the rain.
Song for the imagine here: (x)
Following Parts:
Part II
Tumblr media
Outside, rain had started to drizzle down along the street and sidewalks, people hustling by pulling out their umbrellas. You had ordered your coffee already and you were pulling out your lap top, when the bell chimed loudly by the door, signalling that someone entered the coffee shop. You looked up briefly after opening your lap top, your eyes just level enough to see over the screen at the grey hat, shielding the new-comers face.
It was very rare when you saw new people at the café. It was a small café, hidden by the other large industries surrounding it. Making it barely ever noticed. The barista came over to you, placing your black coffee on the table, then walked off. You grabbed hold of the hot mug, enjoying the warmth that radiated off of it. You were wearing your favourite knitted cardigan, it kept you warm on the coldest of days.
The new-comer was looking around for a spot to sit, since the café was on the small side, most the seats were taken by frequent customers. The only spot open was at your small table, since everyone knew that you enjoyed your space when writing. It was always difficult for you to focus when someone was sitting in front of you. So, what did the new-comer do? Walk up to you. You glanced up at him as he cleared his throat.
You finally got a glimpse under his hat, being rather taken back by his looks. He was a lot more attractive than you thought he would be. He smiled softly down at you, your heart fluttering at the action.
“Mind if I sit?” He asked quietly, gesturing to the open seat opposite you. You couldn’t say no to him, he was a breathtaking sight, really.
“Sure,” you mumbled. Your voice barely audible. You weren’t going to deny that he made you very flustered. He nodded, taking the open spot. The barista came over cautiously, his curious eyes glancing back and forth from you to the new-comer. All you could do was shrug your shoulders.
“What can I get you?” The barista asked him, peering at you every now and then.
“What she has,” he answered, pointing at your black coffee. “What do you have?” He then asked, looking intensely at the black, steaming liquid.
“Coffee,” I answered lowly. Staring at him now, as he nodded in response.
“Yeah, I’ll have a coffee.” He said to the barista.
“Sugar or cream?” The barista asked him, hands folded neatly behind his back as he continued to glance at you every now and then.
“Uh, black is fine.” The new-comer answered. The barista raised his eyebrows with a glorious expression.
“Great!” The barista said before turning on his heel and scurrying off to the counter.
Silence ensued between you and the new-comer. Though, you stared down at your lap top, you could feel his eyes on you. It was weird, you felt. You enjoyed his attention on you. Your hands played carelessly on the keyboard, to overpowered with different thoughts to type. You took the chance of glancing up at him, which was a risky move because he was still staring at you. Your cheeks flushed with heat as you made eye contact. Why? You didn’t know.
“What’s your name?” He asked, bringing your eyes back up to him. His own eyes were scanning your face. As if he were studying you.
“(F/N).” You answered, he smiled at that. You liked his smile, you observed. It was soft, enticing. It was almost lopsided, a little higher on one side, but you liked that.
"(F/N)," he repeated, tasting it on his lips. That's when you really liked the sound of his voice. The sound of your name on his tongue. “I’m Sebastian.” He added, which you nodded response.
“Sebastian.” You hummed, mimicking his actions. You pronounced every syllable with extra charismatic, just to see what kind of reaction you would get. The reaction was him bringing his lip in between his teeth, something that you really enjoyed.
The barista came over again, placing a steaming black coffee in front of Sebastian. Which he smiled in gratitude, sipping his hot drink. You watched him sip at the coffee, wondering if he always had coffee black, or if it was just because you were drinking black coffee. It didn’t matter because he drank it anyway, closing his eyes in an exaggerated way.
“Mm,” he moaned, flopping his head back dramatically. You smiled at him, trying to hide the fact that you were staring at him by hiding behind your lap top.
You continued to stare blankly at the lap top in front of you, still too crowded with thoughts to write. Sebastian continued to drink his coffee, you watched him as carefully as you could over the screen of your lap top. He watched the busy street outside as the rain continued to fall heavier. Without realising it, you looked up at him and stared at him. Admiring his strong jaw line, his nose, his eyes. The stubble that lined his jaw and chin. The hat he was wearing covered his hair and shielded most of the expression that masked his face.
He turned to you suddenly, catching you staring. Your cheeks got even hotter when his eyes met yours. You shakily grabbed your mug, diverting your eyes away from him.
“Do you come here often?” Sebastian asked you, making you look up at him from your coffee.
“Yah,” you breathed, nodding your head as well.
“What are you typing?” He asked, trying to peer around the lap top screen, but there was only a few sentences.
“A novel.” You answered him, clicking the save button before exiting the word document in embarrassment. Sebastian raised his eyebrows at you in surprise.
“You’re a writer?” He asked as he grabbed his coffee mug.
“I guess,” your shrug signalled that you didn’t feel like talking about it. Sebastian eyed you curiously.
“You don’t talk much, do you?” His voice was softer than before. You looked at him for a minute, trying to figure out what kind of angle this guy was coming in from.
“I suppose not.” Sebastian smiled at your response.
“Can I get more than three words from you?” He asked, the sound of his voice was swooning you into a haze, it made you feel warm inside. It hummed in your ears. You didn’t answer him, the screen saver of your lap top took your attention away from him.
After a moment of neither of you speaking, Sebastian cleared his throat to get your attention. Your eyes fluttered up to him, sweeping you from your train of thought. He’d taken his hat off, revealing his thick, brown hair. It looked like it would feel soft, you thought.
“Do you live around here?” Sebastian asked you, his eyes searching yours.
“Close enough,” your response wasn’t very detailed. But, you didn’t know the guy at all, he could be a serial killer.
“Okay.” He nodded, giving you a small smile. “Do you read a lot?” His question took you by surprise.
“I do, yes.” You said, sipping slowly on the steaming black liquid. Sebastian made weird motions with his mouth, trying to hide the fact that he wanted to laugh at you. Squinting your eyes at him, he couldn’t control himself as he let out a loud laugh.
“What?” You asked him, shooting your eyebrows up in surprise as he continued to laugh. His face was lit with a new emotion as the smile devoured his features. His hair fell into his eyes, but he failed to notice as he tried to control his laughter.
“I-I’m not,” Sebastian huffed, wiping stray tears from his eyes. “I’m not sure.” He finally managed to breath. His laughter subsided to light chuckles. Your face was beaming in heat as you realised you probably did something embarrassing, and that was why he was laughing.
“Okay?” You stared at him incredulously. You placed your coffee down and folded your arms across your chest on top of the small table. He held his own mug against him, finally stifling his laughter and focusing his attention on you. His eyes were wrinkled at the sides from his squinting while laughing, you observed.
He continued to just stare at you, his blue eyes were taking in all your own features, as you tried to read what he was thinking. It was weird staring at someone for this long without saying anything, you realised. But you quite enjoyed the silence between you two, just listening to the soft chatter around you. Sebastian brought his mug to his lips, not breaking eye contact with you as he did so. He was completely and utterly handsome, devilishly handsome, heart-hammering, breathtakingly handsome.
“Refill?” Your head snapped away from Sebastian as the barista had come over with a pot full of fresh, hot coffee. You smiled weakly up at him, giving him a small nod of yes. You knew that he was probably thinking you were very strange. Just sitting there, staring at some random guy in complete silence. Bunch of whack jobs.
The barista happily refilled your mug, then offering it to Sebastian, who didn’t deny a second cup. After he filled it up, the barista gave a last smile, then disappeared back to the other customers. Your eyes focused on the full mug in front of you before glancing up at Sebastian. he had already started to drink the steaming liquid, his eyes looking out the window, at the thundering rain.
“The Lost World,” you said suddenly, softly, just barely audible. Sebastian’s eyes quickly flashed to you, his cup placed back on the table.
“What?” He asked curiously, not prying, just blandly curious. The smile that fluttered over your lips was warm, something that was very rare.
“By Arthur Conan Doyle,” you added, making Sebastian quirk an eyebrow up. His head tilted sideways, but his eyes were captivated by the words you spoke. “It’s my favourite. An outstanding novel, really.” Your eyes were caught in his.
Sebastian quietly absorbed your words. The most words you had spoken throughout the whole afternoon. He was first flabbergasted, then his eyes softened to something of understanding. Taking it what you said and realising that you were trying to have a conversation.
“Can’t say I’ve read it,” he said, giving you an apologetic smile. “What’s it about?” Sebastian chided, leaning forward on his elbows, completely fascinated with where the conversation was going. It made you feel dozens of new emotions.
“It’s a journey, based upon something of a world unseen by the human-eye.” You spoke kindly. “It’s based in the Guinea Mountains; breathtaking mountains.” Your voice became a whisper as you got lost in your thoughts.
“It sounds interesting.” Sebastian said, his voice actually did sound interested in the topic. But you hated the idea that you bored people with your book talk, and everything else you say for that matter. Which is why you barely to never talked.
“Sorry,” you mumbled, uncrossing your arms and brushing the hair that fell into your eyes, away. Sebastian looked taken back by your comment.
“Why’re you sorry, Doll?” He asked, surprising you with the nickname. “I like hearing you talk.” His own voice was light, trying to slip through the walls you had built up around you.
“Y-you do?” The question was dumb, you realised after you spoke it. Mentally face-palming. Sebastian snorted at you, his lop sided smile making it’s way back to his face.
“Yes.” He said, swarming your heart with a million fits of electricity. It shot through nerves in your body you’d forgotten you had.
Feeling the heat rise to your cheeks, you turned your face away to try and hide the smile that was slipping onto your lips. You attention came to the view outside the window, seeing the rain had finally subsided.
“Oh!” You suddenly said, making Sebastian look at you in surprise. “I must be on my way.” With no further explanation, you jumped to your feet, shoving your lap top into your book bag and slipping your arms into your rain coat.
“What? Go?” Sebastian stood along side you, his face contorted into panic. “Where do you have to go?” You ignored him as you hastily buttoned up the coat, fumbling nervously with them.
“I’m so sorry,” you apologized, looking up to met his eyes as you pulled your book bag over your shoulder. “It was-” you thought for a moment. “It was nice meeting you.” Finally saying up to him.
Sebastian looked puzzled for a brief second, until you took a step closer to him and quickly pecking him on his stubbled cheek, just barely. He was a lot taller than you had thought, as you stood to compare your height, now. You stepped back, ready to make a dash exit, just glancing at Sebastian’s perplexed features.
Giving him a smile that could melt any heart, you left the coffee shop. Taking advantage of the cloudy skies, as opposed to the rain.
Sebastian stood still, he wasn’t quite sure what exactly had just happened. His mind was trying to catch up to his actions as he turned around, trying to catch a glimpse of (F/N) as she disappeared into the hazy street. Where did she go? How did she run off that fast?
He had been indulged by her beauty, her shy demeanor. It somehow drew him in, like a fly to a trap. She had been what he needed, Sebastian realised. After having such a hectic, crazy couple of months. He just needed to relax, be quiet, and enjoy the moment. He didn’t realise that’s what he was going to do today until his eyes landed on you.
“(F/N) left?” The barista made Sebastian jump in surprise, not noticing that he had come up beside him.
“Uhm, yeah.” Sebastian sighed, reaching a hand up to run it through his hair in dismay.
“Do you know her well?” The barista asked, looking up at Sebastian.
“No, just met.” He answered, frustrated with himself for letting you slip away, without even getting a last name. The barista left out a low whistle, making Sebastian turn to him, confused.
“You must be some guy.” The barista laughed. “She never lets anyone sit at her table.” Sebastian looked at him in concern, not quite realising what the barista was saying.
“Never?” He asked.
“Nada.” The barista shook his head, “she’s as diffident as they get.” he added, shaking his head in a disapproving way.
“Do you know her last name?” Sebastian asked, wanting to know more of this beautiful, mystery girl.
“Funny thing about being diffident,” he started, giving Sebastian a weird look. “They don’t like to share.”
Sebastian watched as he walked away, going back to serve more people. Realising that he had just let the best thing that could possibly happen to him, slip away.
Okaay, I liked this! (P.S, she didn’t NOT pay for her coffee, since she’s a usual, she has a tab)
Let me know if you guys want to hear a Part II ??

Tell Me A Story: 15 Weird Superhero Comic Book Formats
Over their several decades of existence, American superhero comics have had to adapt to changing market conditions and changes in reader habits. Anthologies were more popular in the Golden Age but dwindled away as the Silver Age ended. Early Marvel superhero books incorporated continuing subplots to create super-soap operas, and DC naturally followed suit. Today, even as the individual issue with 20 story pages still dominates as the standard comic book format, many readers wait for collected editions.
RELATED: The 15 Weirdest Comic Book Swimsuit Specials
And yet, every now and then there are isolated instances of experimentation in which a publisher bends those dominant formats to either stretch storytelling possibilities or just to attract attention. Never mind the menagerie of 1990s-era cover gimmicks or the modern effects that digital and motion comics can achieve; good old-fashioned print had some surprising tricks. Today, as the “Kamandi Challenge” revives an old DC experiment, we look back (in no particular order) on some odd and unusual ways to present superhero stories.
ROCKIN’ ROUND-ROBIN
If you think creative teams don’t stick around as long as they used to, then you need to consider the round-robin format used in 1985-86’s “DC Challenge” miniseries and currently in use by the “Kamandi Challenge.” Each issue has a different creative team and the only real rule is to end on a cliffhanger for the next team to resolve. Notice that the rules don’t include “tell a coherent story,” because as much fun as the “DC Challenge” teams apparently had on each of their issues, boy-howdy was it hard to follow!
It started with Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Adam Strange and some demons in Mark Evanier and Gene Colan’s “DC Challenge” #1, but before it was over, Nazis had won World War II, Superman had a red sun for a head and the JLA Satellite was full of confused super-people. Nevertheless, the round-robin can stretch the capabilities of both readers and creators, and it truly shows off comics’ limitless potential.
A BIG DELIGHT
Likewise, we include the ubiquitous one-page Hostess Cupcake ads of the 1970s for the only rule they appeared to have: Make sure the product is the star. That was the point, of course; but for readers used to Batman and Daredevil fighting ninjas and serial murderers in their regular books, the ads were a bit jarring to read.
Although they featured even wilder plots than the regular comics (birds stealing the Statue of Liberty, for example) and used ultra-powerful characters like Green Lantern and Captain Mar-Vell, the day was always saved by the timely appearance of Twinkies, Hostess Cupcakes or Fruit Pies. Granted, who among us can resist rich chocolate taste and/or creamy filling. But the ads were so prevalent that, after a while, one got the impression that the Justice League and Avengers could have saved themselves a lot of trouble by stuffing the Anti-Monitor or Thanos full of sweet treats.
COMICS WITHIN COMICS
In the early 1980s, DC previewed new series with 16-page stories bound into the middle of selected single issues. The “Amethyst” preview was in “Legion of Super-Heroes” #294, “All-Star Squadron’s” was in “JLA” #192, and a little series called “New Teen Titans” was first seen in the middle of “DC Comics Presents” #26.
These previews didn’t have anything to do with the titles they appeared in, but later in the decade, “Bonus Book” inserts tied in more closely and featured up-and-coming talent. Today, the format is back, sort of, through “Dark Knight III’s” bound-in mini-comics. Basically they’re backup stories, but since they’re physically in the middle of the issue, you have to get around them in order to finish reading the main story, and then circle back and hope you read everything in the right order. Whatever you do, though, don’t risk your comics’ value (or its staples) by removing the inserts.
HEARD ANY GOOD PICTURES LATELY?
Another staple of the 1970s, Power Records specialized in book-and-record sets where kids could read along with an audio dramatization. Along with superheroes, the label featured sci-fi franchises like “Star Trek” and “Planet of the Apes.” While Power adapted existing issues, like September 1972’s “Fantastic Four” #126, December 1973’s “Captain America” #168 or January 1974’s “Incredible Hulk” #171, Neal Adams’ Continuity Studios also produced original stories for the label.
These included the Batman tales “Stacked Cards” and “Robin Meets Man-Bat” (reprinted in “Batman Illustrated By Neal Adams” volume 3); Superman stories by Cary Bates, Elliott S. Maggin and Ross Andru; and a 1976 Conan adventure by Len Wein, J.M. DeMatteis and John Buscema that was reprinted as November 1980’s “Conan” #116. Although the novelty comes from hearing an actor screech like Man-Bat or roar like the Hulk, we imagine “writing for the record” is a skill set all its own.
NEXUS IN STEREO
Sometimes the soundtrack is part of the main series. “Nexus” was a superhero series set 500 years in the future, initially published under Capital Comics and now owned by Dark Horse. Writer Mike Baron and artist Steve Rude’s independent sci-fi superhero classic started out as a magazine-sized black-and-white comic.
Bound into its third issue was a “flexi-disc” with the “Nexus” theme song (co-written by Baron) and an audio dramatization. An editorial explained the benefits: “The intonation of a character’s voice, background music to set the mood and electrifying sound effects all add new depth and dimension to the printed words and art.” While flexi-discs wouldn’t be in every issue, the editorial promised “next time we do this it’ll be even better.” However, there was never to be a “next time,” unfortunately, as the flexi-disc doesn’t show up in reprints and there weren’t any future issues that came accompanied with flex-discs to enjoy. However, “Nexus” turned out to be memorable enough without the audio accompaniment.
INDEPENDENT VOICES
Although it’s not really a distinct format to pair mainstream, corporate-controlled characters with comics creators from more of an independent background, anthologies like the “Bizarro Comics” and “Strange Tales” series are often both entertaining and illuminating.
“Bizarro” allowed DC to reprint Kyle Baker’s instant-classic “Letitia Lerner, Superman’s Babysitter” and “Strange Tales” gave us Kate Beaton’s take on Rogue and Kraven. Tom Scioli and John Barber’s “Transformers vs. G.I. Joe” series, which merged the superfans’ knowledge with their unique styles and filtered it through a ’70s Jack Kirby lens, is also a good example of combining the best of both worlds. Of course, with the Internet, it’s become easier than ever to find cartoonists’ “unsanctioned” takes on superheroes, but the official sanctioning of a DC or Marvel anthology may sand down some rough edges. Still, the freedom these creators normally enjoy usually transfers pretty well, and we’re all better for it.
NEXTWAVE EXTRAS
Warren Ellis and Stuart Immonen’s 12-issue cult-classic “Nextwave” (2006-07) took shots at a lot of superhero-comics targets, but it also used some memorable gimmicks to grow an audience. Mixed into Fin Fang Foom’s pants-related anger, the filthy half of the Captain’s codename and Machine Man’s contempt for fleshy ones was the “Nextwave” theme. So too were things like issue #5’s “Crayon Butchery Variant.”
Yes, quite a while before adult coloring books became a thing, “Nextwave” encouraged its readers to cast off the shackles of hues imposed from on high and color the issue themselves. Granted, this was a variant, so readers had to make an extra effort to get it. So unsurprisingly, the non-colored version of the issue hasn’t been reprinted in any “Nextwave” collection. As a further incentive, though, Marvel conducted a coloring contest, and the winner’s name (Matthew Keegan, whose entry can be seen here) was forever immortalized in said collections.
EASY LIKE SUNDAY MORNING
The 12-issue weekly “Wednesday Comics” was designed to emulate the classic comics pages of Sunday newspapers, when adventure strips like “Prince Valiant” and “The Phantom” got ample room for their Sunday-continuity installments (Feel free to ask your grandparents for more details.). Each issue of “Wednesday Comics” folded up into a standard 7″ x 10″ comic-book size, but opened into 15 gigantic 14″ x 20″ broadsheet pages.
The features included DC’s A-listers as well as Kyle Baker’s “Hawkman,” Dave Gibbons and Ryan Sook’s “Kamandi” and Paul Pope’s “Adam Strange.” Neil Gaiman and Mike Allred’s “Metamorpho” even did two pages which combined to form the Periodic Table of the Elements. “USA Today” also published John Arcudi and Lee Bermejo’s “Superman” strip. The collected edition is similarly impressive, and includes a “Plastic Man” short feature; but nothing beat the love-of-reading experience from picking up each issue as it came out.
EVENTS PUBLISHED IN REAL TIME
One series which demanded to be read as it came out was 2006-07’s sequel to “Infinite Crisis,” the year-long weekly “52.” Since all of DC’s ongoing superhero comics had gone through a one-year time-jump, only “52” chronicled the missing year. Its brain trust, which included writers Geoff Johns, Mark Waid, Grant Morrison and Greg Rucka, and layout artist Keith Giffen, further imposed a strict real-time rule that each issue would cover one week. The only cliffhanger involved one issue ending at 11:59 p.m. and the next starting at midnight.
The method was popular enough, with some fans reportedly waiting to read each day’s events as they “happened,” meaning a fan on a Tuesday would stop reading on when he or she reached the part of the issue dealing with a Wednesday. There had been real-time comics before (the “Batman: No Man’s Land” epic played out over the course of a year, for example, from January to December 1999), but with elastic timelines a staple of superhero storytelling, “52’s” adherence to its internal rules was both a clever gimmick and a steadying influence on its pacing.
TRIANGLE TIME
Some superheroes are simply too big for one book, but when a hero has multiple comics titles being published, those books don’t necessarily have to flow together. When they do, however, the results can be quite engaging. In the early 1980s, Bat-writer Gerry Conway structured issues of “Batman” and “Detective Comics” so that “Detective” continued “Batman’s” stories, and vice versa. The format ended with 1986’s “Batman” #400, but not long afterwards the three Superman books (“Action Comics,” “Adventures of Superman” and “Superman”) picked it up.
To keep everything straight, the Super-titles put the reading order in a little triangle on each issue’s cover. It lasted about 10 years, before including the addition of a new monthly series (“Man of Steel”), as well as incorporating a new quarterly book (“Man of Tomorrow”) for the months that had five Wednesdays in them. It could be overwhelming at times, but the four series combined to tell some true epics, including the “Death of Superman,” “Funeral For A Friend” and “Return of Superman” story arcs.
PAGE-HOPPING
We’ve already talked about comics within comics, but Walt Simonson’s “Fantastic Four” #352 (May 1991) presented a story within a story, and the “inner” story was out of sync with the “outer” one! The main (“outer”) story involved Doctor Doom, Ben Grimm reverting back to the Thing, and Ben’s girlfriend Sharon Ventura giving up her own career as the Thing in her absence.
Doom had captured the FF and challenged Reed Richards to a duel using time-jumping devices. Their fight, which was waged across increments of minutes and seconds, was the “inner” story, and it unfolded in out-of-sequence vertical panels that ran alongside the in-sequence main story. Readers had to follow the timecodes in both stories in order to keep everything in order, and could check their work with the occasional panel where the two timelines intersected. It was a great use of single-issue real estate and the kind of innovative technique “FF” helped pioneer.
DIAL “R” FOR READER
Created by Dave Wood and Jim Mooney for January 1966’s “House of Mystery” #156, “Dial H For HERO” was one of Silver Age DC’s crazier concepts. It involved a magic “H-Dial” which would turn its owner into a randomly-generated superhero and, more often than not, a one-off character created specifically for the story.
The feature ran until issue #173 (March-April 1968) but was revived in February 1981 via a special insert (remember those?) in “Legion of Super-Heroes” #272. (It then moved to “Adventure Comics” and was a backup in “Superboy.”) This time, writer Marv Wolfman and artist Carmine Infantino’s gimmick was using characters submitted by readers, who both received credit for the idea and had a T-shirt sent to them in exchange for their intellectual property. While it was probably a time-saver for the creative team, no doubt they also wracked their brains trying to figure out how to work Lawnmower Lass, or whomever, into the stories.
THIS COMIC CAN KILL YOU
In “Animal Man,” Grant Morrison famously broke the fourth wall to introduce himself to the main character, Buddy Baker. Over 20 years later, Morrison would revisit the idea of characters addressing the reader directly in his “Multiversity” miniseries, especially in the “Ultra Comics” one-shot, which was an installment about a character named Ultra from the “real world” of Earth-33, who was a comic book come to life.
In other words, “Ultra Comics” was about itself, and by reading the issue, readers participated in the character’s life, including his birth and (very short) career. At the end of the issue, Ultra sacrificed himself by trapping his foe within the pages of the comic, begging readers not to let it out. To that point, “Multiversity” was already pretty meta-textual, so “Ultra Comics” was over the top on a number of levels. Nevertheless, the reader-participation angle gave the miniseries an entirely new dimension.
CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE COMICS
One of the many tools in Ryan North’s utility belt is a knack for choose-your-own-adventure storytelling. Besides his great mostly-prose Shakespeare adaptations (“To Be Or Not To Be” and “Romeo And/Or Juliet”), he’s also written a couple of chooseable-path comics. In November 2012’s “Adventure Time” #10, he and artist Shelli Paroline crafted a labyrinthine tale about the Ice King putting our heroes under the control of a mysterious force (guess who) which got more and more twisted as the issue played out. The ending even depended on the sheer number of options the story eventually encompassed.
More recently, in June 2016’s “Unbeatable Squirrel Girl” #7, North and artist Erica Henderson allowed the reader to guide Squirrel Girl to victory against Quoggoth, Swarm, and/or Doctor Yes, with Galactus himself as your host. Chooseable-path comics aren’t new (see “The Unwritten” #17, for example) but North has brought them back into the limelight and made them a one-man trend.
TITANS SEPARATELY
Superhero comics of the early ’90s get well-deserved attention for the cover-enhancement craze. Therefore, to stand out from all the chromium and foil, DC promoted September 1992’s first issue of “Team Titans” with — wait for it — alternate interiors. That’s right, not only did “Team Titans” #1 feature variant covers for each of the five Titans, each variant also included the 18-page origin of its cover-featured hero.
Accordingly, if you wanted to get the whole story, you had to buy five different issues (all of which were written by Marv Wolfman). That was overkill, since the variants all shared the same 22-page main story; and on top of that, the main story was Part 3 of a Titans-franchise crossover! Those of you doing the math will realize that if you bought all five variants, you got 4 extra copies of Part 3 of the crossover. Needless to say, DC decided to keep the variants on the covers only from then on.

Kate Watches: Doctor Who 9x06 & 9x07
Previously on Doctor Who, we had the beginning of what could have been a fascinating morality play if it hadn’t been for poor narrative choices and dodgy CGI.
But before I get to the episode itself, I want to touch on the strange girl-woman dichotomy that exists within Steven Moffat’s series. In these episodes alone, one is about a “girl”, and the other a “woman”. Previously Amy and Clara, both adult women in their twenties when their tenures began, have been labelled “girls” (”The Girl Who Waited”, “Souffle Girl”), while River Song and Irene Adler are “women” (although true, Irene’s label was originally crafted by Arthur Conan Doyle). Ashildr was young in “The Girl Who Died”, but given that her immortality prevents her from aging and she goes on to have children, she is clearly an adult when the Doctor first meets her; Maisie Williams was nineteen when the episode aired. So why are Amy and Clara and Ashildr “girls”? What distinguishes them from River and Irene? Is it the agency they’re allowed to exercise, or how their narratives sexualise them? And why is gender so important in Moffat’s writing? In the shows Moffat helms, characters are often given titles that build them up within the narrative and are connected to their gender (although it’s important to note that male characters are never “boys”). That part of a character’s identity is, for whatever reason, important. But why? “Girl” is often associated with youth, so is that what he’s emphasizing? But Martha Jones was “The Woman Who Walked the Earth”, and she was roughly the same age as Amy and Clara, so why is she allowed to be a woman--an adult--while they aren’t? Is there a reason for that? Or can it be boiled down to pure sexism?
”The Woman Who Lived”, written not by Moffat or Jamie Mathieson but Catherine Tregenna, picks up with Ashildr centuries after she was made immortal. The Doctor is travelling without Clara (Clara’s part-time companion role is something I still find a little strange and awkward), and consequently the bulk of the episode is taken up with the parallels between the Doctor and Ashildr. They have both lived for a long time. They have both lost people they loved. On the face of it this is a very compelling story, but there is something missing and it’s a bit difficult to pinpoint exactly what. Is it the writing? Is it the acting? Is it the direction? Is it all three? Given the subject matter, this should have been an episode full of anger and bitterness. Ashildr may have forgotten the woman she was (an angle I loved), but when she realised that it was the Doctor who made her immortal there should have been more of a reaction. She should have been furious. She should have lashed out. She called him a hero, but after centuries shouldn’t that have soured? And even if she didn’t because she didn’t want to alienate the Doctor as part of a greater plan, there should have been some struggle within herself. While she does get upset towards the end of the episode, buildup would have made that moment feel earned. It would have been the result of Ashildr’s emotional journey.
Speaking of journeys, it’s clear that Tregenna is trying to fill in the gaps left by the previous episode and build on what came before, but as there was so little to build on her efforts are falling a little flat. We didn’t see enough of Ashildr as a character for the changes she’s gone through, and her forgetting her Viking life, to have much of an impact. Tregenna is trying to delve in to the moral complexity of Ashildr’s immortality, but she doesn’t go deep enough. This episode could have been something like “Boom Town, laying bare the consequences of the Doctor’s actions and asking the hard questions. Was it his place to choose immortality for Ashildr? Should he have let her die? Did he save her? Was this cruel? Ashildr wants off the slow path, but does she want to die? It’s funny that Tregenna should name-check Jack Harkness, because he is not only a past example of Doctor Who tackling a human-turned-immortal, but an example of what you can do with that kind of character. Both on Doctor Who and Torchwood, Jack’s immortality was explored as a blessing and a curse. He had met amazing people and lived a dozen lives, but he also lost. He ruined just as many lives as he saved. “Do you want to die?” the Doctor asked him as Jack used his immortality to help people, and his answer was complicated. Jack’s immortality was complicated. How the Doctor treated him was also examined; he wasn’t allowed to feel comfortable in his abandonment of another person. “The Woman Who Lived” could have handled Ashildr’s immortality in a similar way, but it instead chose a superficial approach. It’s a true shame, as this episode--and this concept--had a lot of potential.
Next we have “The Zygon Invasion” by Peter Harness, the writer of “Kill the Moon”. This episode did not get off to a good start. It’s no secret that I hate the 50th Anniversary episode and the Time War retcon. I found it lazy and unimaginative, and was actually rather pleased when Series 8 largely chose to ignore it. Series 9 is not going the same way, as the pre-credits scene reminds us of the events of that episode. And the Tenth Doctor’s terrible hair.
Why must you hurt me in this way, Harness?
The bulk of this episode is focused on setting up the second episode, introducing the Zygon conflict (which would wrap up the Zygon storyline that Moffat forgot about in “The Day of the Doctor”) and getting the characters in place. There’s a Harriet Jones reference. There are parallels drawn to the refugee crisis. Clara gets to be an active character. The psychological horror of the story, people not knowing whether their loved ones are human or Zygon, is really well done, as is the twist at the end of Clara having been turned in to a Zygon for most of the episode. I wasn’t a huge fan of Osgood the few times we saw her, largely due to her costuming which doesn’t feel natural, but I didn’t mind her here. One of my favourite parts of this episode, however, was the Doctor’s position as the voice of peace and dialogue. He isn’t throwing his name around. He isn’t threatening anyone and “making armies run away”. He’s trying to avoid violence. He wants a sustainable, peaceful solution. This is the Doctor I love, and I’m thrilled to see him again.
If there’s a flaw in this episode, it’s that it could use more grounding. There’s a major intergalactic incident happening in London and around the world, and not once does Clara think of her family or friends or co-workers (at least before she becomes a Zygon). While there are moments that read as suspicious--where you wonder if something has happened to Clara--Clara’s lack of thought for the people she loves isn’t one of. Two Christmas specials ago Clara had a father and stepmother and grandmother; she was enough a part of the slow path to have a job that would miss her. Two series ago, she lived with family friends and was a close part of their lives. What happened to them? Has she grown apart from them all? If so, why does the narrative not acknowledge that? This is something I’m going to be paying a lot of attention to.
The episode ends with a cliffhanger, and I admit I’m curious to see the end. Sometimes the pacing was slow, and sometimes the acting wasn’t up to scratch, but “The Zygon Invasion” was still an interesting episode.
