In hindsight, it's absolutely Hawkeye's fault for getting buttery soft about this simple touch. Even before Beej lightly thumbs over his wrist through the gap in Hawk's jacket sleeve, he's shivering, and the graze of BJ's calloused skin sends a shock of heat through him. There's still concern here, fleeting thoughts hovering around BJ's cot, but little by little, the song of his temporary lover is inundating him, warming his body from the outside in. This is why he doesn't see the bouncing blonde waves until he's three steps inside the mess tent.

As Hawkeye and BJ sink deeper into their new casual sexual relationship, the nature of how they've related to each other up until now begins to change. Old tricks from their pasts no longer work the way they remember. Ghosts haunt the edges of their memories. Pockets of private time are fewer and farther between. And ultimately, come hell or high water, they'll either learn how to use their words or they'll lose everything before it even really begins.
