Some kind of angst of a Hero and a Villain

tw: mention of death

Villain has been living away from people for a long time, retired and leaving all his affairs. He and Hero were partners, friends, someone more once - but Hero betrayed him. Destroyed everything. He left, and since then their names have never been mentioned together, even in the greatest exploits that they performed together. It was then that Villain turned into darkness.

Years have passed since the transfiguration, years have passed since retirement and the beginning of hermithood. Hero died. Villain grinned irritably, spat with his tongue, declaring that he didn't care, that he was glad that the traitor had deserved it for a long time. That no one here cherishes the memories that they managed to create, while still bright and precious.

He is lying to himself. Villain refuses to remember how on the night when he learned about the death of Hero, he sobbed, smashed furniture and threw glass at the portrait with a too vivid and familiar image, how he broke his voice, blaming emptiness, and got drunk to unconsciousness, lighting candles for the repose with trembling hands.

Enough time has passed. And so, now he is forced to help the Young novice hero in his affairs, because there is too much from this. Villain grumbles, showing his irritation with all his appearance, but helps, keeps the clumsy boy from falling into traps and eventually gets used to his company.

Youngster is perplexed when Villain talks about betrayal on the part of the Hero. The boy cautiously expresses that, of course, he has no right to judge other people's relationships and evaluate those actions, but... But Hero never hushed up the name of Villain, telling about their common achievements. Moreover, he often defended him, proved to people that Villain was not a monster at all and, in fact, never did anything really terrible. And that's why Villain was allowed to live peacefully.

Villain is stunned. He is silent for a long time, while confused thoughts are drowned out by the pounding of his heart, but then he swallows and refuses to believe it.

(because if it's true, then his soul won't stand such pain)

One day, he and Youngster arrive at the Hero's house because they need to find something in his notes. They endlessly sort through documents, books, magazines, newspapers. And all these things over and over again confirm that Hero was really worthy of his title. Villain is looking through another book with longing when a crumpled piece of paper suddenly falls out of the pages.

This is the handwriting of Hero. But so chaotic and jumping, as if he wrote it in delirium — sliding lines, confused, uneven letters, some spots. The whole sheet is filled with the words "sorry, sorry, sorry, I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry" and the name of the Villain. There are also a few more coherent sentences in which the Hero remembers Villain and writes his random thoughts soaked in despair.

Trembling fingers squeeze the paper. The breath caught in throat. Wide-open eyes begin to water. And Villain finally breaks down.
