I headcanon Itachi gets desperately lonely. You will never see it on his face; you won't know it from his calm aura of stoic measured steps or the natural ease with which he lapses into silence, bravely slipping through several iterations of "Take this mission as a means to an end, nothing more nothing less" and "Just remember, you're the smartest man here, you can outsmart them by any manner you deem fit, by just lifting a finger-no-I'm fully qualified to suppress the most genius ninjutsu with a single stare, without verbalizing a single word" and finally, "Keep to the code, the fate of the ninja world is impending upon my baited breath, my complete absence of a voice, of desires, of ego.. No no, more ego less stress. You can do this Shogun. Never hesitate." He goes through this litany when it is too overwhelming to go on, whenever he feels his grip on his sanity slither from his grasp.. Little by little.. Every day it gets harder to steer his compass and dial it back to the beginning of why he ever made the decisions he did..

Yes, I do headcanon that Itachi mentally ticks off Shogun, Soldier, Advanced Infintry Warrior as purposeful monikers he calls himself to get him through those nights where he would be anywhere but in a hell hole reeking of bile and dysentery and acid rain, robes fuming of deceased blood. His ego has no place in the scheme of things-- he just wants motivation to get through the next deed, the next sin, the next kill. The next aberrant death. The next affliction rooted in deep denial.

Itachi is a pro at shielding his exasperation or disagreement from being visibly read on his face. His comrades never notice him as it is; but Kisame is a pro at detecting Itachi's tiny shifts in mood, the slight droop of his shoulders; He can count down to the very second where Itachi is about to display a rare moment of irritation or impatience; He can switch his gears for his partner, Itachi is the one man besides Pain-sama that Kisame respects without grudge. He has no qualms to indulge the quiet ninja every now and then to stop for the night at a comfortable inn for once, or to grab a warm meal during a long slogging mission. In fact Kisame often relies on Itachi's agency to make decisions because his decisions get them through the worst of times. However...

Itachi is cripplingly lonely, the absence of stimulation he must battle with every pouring day is a stark reminder of the seven rings of hell he is moving closer to as his days close in on each other; his desperation borders on delirious. He grips his judgement by the horns as Kisame prattles on about which Akatsuki member is the most tiresome, most gifted, most obnoxious, most petty. Itachi wants to SCREAM AND KICK AND PUNCH. He lashes out at his victims VICIOUSLY to a pulp. He throws hands so lecherously it alarms Kisame, not because he doubts Itachi's reputation as a meaningless killer, but because Itachi is a single-minded soldier when he's not in battle mode; he never expects to be in the throes of a spectacle as visibly hair-raising and impressive as witnessing Itachi go in for the kill. The fantastic array of emotions Itachi evinces every time his sharingan blazes with broad strokes of bleeding crimson and vehement black gives Kisame chills, it is in those moments he truly fails to recognize Itachi as anything but a demonic entity, existing for the sheer trauma that killing evokes in him.

Itachi collects books as he travels; he likes to read when he has the chance to, not only because it is necessary to keep up with the changing world, but without books his missions are a slog; he reads one book at a time, in the evenings before he throws in for the night. He likes to sit by the fire and read, manifesting complete silence of the outside world. It's his only window of luxury after a day of slaughter and Itachi is strict that he not be interrupted unless an enemy is approaching. If he and Kisame pay for a room Itachi lies in bed and reads, his feet propped up on pillows, with a candle taper softly bathing the pages of his books, it is calming. He doesn't often leave footnotes, but if a line or phrase really stands out and gives him pleasure, he writes little comments in the margins, or scribbles parenthesis. Itachi finishes a book within half a week, and leaves it in a spot where anyone can find it i.e, a bar stool, a stray drawer in an inn, even on a tree stump. It gives him a small sense of giving back to the world, in a small way.

Reading is a tiny distraction from the grind of death, from the nights he has no choice but to sleep in robes reeking of guts and cerebrospinal fluid. On nights where Itachi is silent as the grave, too shell shocked to speak or mouth words, he buries his nose in a book and Kisame thinks he is dissociating, lost in his own genjutsu, dead to him.

Itachi writes letters to Sasuke. He has never sent a single letter. He shreds each letter once he writes it and sighs, dejected. He knows Sasuke can never read a single word. He discreetly leaves little notes for Sasuke to stray across, but Sasuke has never found any of the memoirs Itachi anonymously leaves him on his travels. There are nights where Itachi sends ravens to bring back news of him and when it is late, and Sasuke is asleep, Itachi approaches him. Sasuke is a loner, and a vagrant; he sleeps under the pitch black moon more often than he sleeps in inns. Itachi watches him sleep on those nights where he fears for him, if he's in a high risk area he stays close to him and stares closely at his weatherworn and beat face, the lines that are starting to crowd the mirage of Sasuke's youth. Itachi doesn't speak or give any evidence of his presence, but speaks to him silently and has conversations with him. He checks his food supply and water ration; he fills his water flask with fresh juice and if he sees Sasuke lying on grass with no blanket he brings him blankets and pillows. Itachi has to stop himself from tucking him in, but he does spread as many blankets on him as he thinks Sasuke needs, to stay warm, and delicately shimmies a pillow under Sasuke's head. Then Itachi waits with bated breath, unsure if he did too much. If Sasuke twitches an eyelash, Itachi flees. He hates himself for fleeing.

I saw someone reblog an old post about Itasasu, with a comment even, showing that they were really interested in what I wrote years ago, but all I could think about was that they reblogged it from the person who acted like a creep, with the pretext of Itasasu roleplay and shipping, pulling an Itachi, so to speak, acting ‘protective’ with me but in fact isolating me from the online friends I had back then (I was really active), using my weaknesses  (that I told her because I kinda trusted her in the beginning) to destroy the little self esteem I had, and making me doubt every single word I wrote, about myself, about Itasasu and more. So that post this person reposted has an ‘introduction’ where I point out that said creep made me notice mistakes, I even thanked her for this, and it was such a manipulation cause I remember the drama she started whenever I did things she didn’t approve, apparently related to my interpretation of Itasasu with an Itachi that wasn’t 100% a good person, and in reality related to the fact that I wrote essays and meta and stuff that had a lot of visibility back then, which she didn’t have.

My posts in that creep’s blog remain even if I should delete my blog, so I can’t do anything. Anyway, if my followers and those who stumble upon this post, see meta, asks, essays in other ppl’s blogs, where I’m the OP, they might open said post in my blog, and see if it’s different, cause after I cut all contacts with that creep I removed all the forced bullshit I wrote to please her. Just in case someone is interested.

(also, be careful: don’t open to ppl who act suspicious, like not spontaneously, as to appear mysterious and cool. They’re not. They’re just manipulating you into being interested in them, making you open up so they’ll use your weaknesses against you when you won’t do as they say)
