A high-profile Italian author has accused Rai of censorship after his antifascist monologue was abruptly stopped from being aired, in what he called the “definitive demonstration” of alleged attempts by Giorgia Meloni’s government to wield its power over the state broadcaster.
Antonio Scurati was due to read the monologue marking the 25 April national holiday, which celebrates Italy’s liberation from fascism, on the Rai 3 talkshow Chesarà on Saturday night.
But as he prepared to travel to Rome, he received a note from Rai telling him his appearance had been cancelled “for editorial reasons”.
Scurati is well known in Italy for his books about the dictator Benito Mussolini and the fascist period. The cancellation of his monologue provoked fierce reaction from Rai journalists, fellow authors and opposition leaders.
His speech referenced Giacomo Matteotti, a political opponent of Mussolini who was murdered by fascist hitmen in 1924, and other massacres of the regime. It also contained a paragraph criticising Italy’s “post-fascist” leaders for not “repudiating their neofascist past”.
“Undoubtedly, this is what infuriated them,” Scurati told the Guardian. “And also because of what I represent and maintain in my books … [that] there is a continuity between the fascism of Mussolini and the populist nationalists in Europe.”
The Rai director Paolo Corsini denied that the monologue had been censored, telling the Italian media that an investigation “of an economic and contractual nature” was under way, while implying that the speech was cancelled because of the “higher than expected” fee sought by Scurati.
Scurati said his fee had been agreed and the contract signed before the monologue was due to be broadcast. “The fee was perfectly in line with those paid to authors … It was the same as in the past, when there were no issues.”
In solidarity, Serena Bortone, who presents Chesarà, read out the monologue on the show. It has also been published in full by several Italian newspapers and websites.
Meloni, whose Brothers of Italy party has neofascist origins, came to power in October 2022 with a coalition including the far-right League and the late Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia.
During the election campaign, Meloni said the rightwing parties had “handed fascism over to history for decades now”. However, Scurati claimed in his monologue that when forced to address fascism at historical anniversaries, Meloni has “obstinately stuck to the ideological line of her neofascist culture of origin”, for example by blaming the Mussolini regime’s persecution of the Jews and other massacres on Nazi Germany alone.
Meloni responded by publishing the speech on her Facebook page, while attacking Scurati and accusing the left of “shouting at the regime”.
“Rai responded by simply refusing to pay €1,800 (the monthly salary of many employees) for a minute of monologue,” she said. “I don’t know what the truth is, but I will happily publish the text of the monologue (which I hope I don’t have to pay for) for two reasons: 1) Those who have always been ostracised and censored by the public service will never ask for anyone to be censored. Not even those who think their propaganda against the government should be paid for with citizens’ money. 2) Because Italians can freely judge its content.”
Since coming to power, the Meloni government has been accused of increasingly exerting its power over Rai while edging out managers or TV hosts with leftwing views. The European Commission was last week urged to investigate the government’s alleged attempts to turn the broadcaster into a “megaphone” for the ruling parties before the European elections.
Meloni’s administration has also been accused of trying to influence other areas of the press and targeting journalists with legal action who criticise the government. A Brothers of Italy politician recently proposed toughening penalties for defamation, including jail terms of two to three years.
Elly Schlein, the leader of the centre-left Democratic party, said: “The Scurati case is serious; Rai is the megaphone for the government.” Carlo Calenda, the leader of the centrist Azione party, said: “Silencing a writer for saying unpleasant things about the government is simply unacceptable.”
Scurati said he has received solidarity from many authors and journalists who were otherwise afraid to speak out against the government.
“This episode is the definitive demonstration, as it has finally aroused the revolt of other writers, intellectuals and journalists who until now kept quiet,” he said. “This government launches violent personal attacks against you for speaking out, in my case [that] I asked for too much money.”

Sanremo 2024 - the post!
Hello everyone! Here you’ll find this year’s Sanremo’s stuff and news (I’ll be uploading this post through all the week). The Festival will start on Tuesday February 6th at 8:30 pm (it’ll probably have a 5 minutes “anteprima = preview” every night), and end on Saturday February 10th, when the final will be broadcasted.
/ Official website / you can find loads of videos and interviews here + the latest news. You can already find the presentation videos of the songs made by the artists.
Rai’s website dedicated section (here) | youtube playlist | spotify playlist
TikTok official channel: @/sanremorai; @/sanremoesc Instagram official: @/sanremorai Twitter official: @/SanremoRAI; @/SanremoESC Facebook: festivaldisanremo
Also this year we’ll have the PrimaFestival, the small show broadcasted on Rai1 at around 8:30 p.m. (February 4th - February 10th). The hosts are Paola & Chiara (singers), Mattia Stanga and Daniele Cabras (tiktokers).
There's gonna be some kind of Dopofestival, with Fiorello and Alessia Marcuzzi (tv/radio host) called “Viva Rai2!… Viva Sanremo” (jingle/sigla) right after the end of each Sanremo's night (6th-9th Feb.). Gli Autogol (comedians soccer-related) will complete some missions for Amadeus on Raiplay.
CasaSanremo- A website about Sanremo and all the artists who will take part, with more infos and interviews (also Italian places and food specialties will be shown). Follow them also on their Social Media Channels, usually they make live video/interviews/shows on FB for example.
On Sorrisi&Canzoni you will find also other infos about Sanremo and every lyrics’s explanation (ofc ask me if you need a translation)
The # on this blog is #sanremo 2024, #sanremo, #sanremo2024 you can black any of these (the first one in particular) if you want.
To watch it live:
Raiuno -> just click on the first video on the left, or here, to open the Raiuno streaming immediately (I added the whole Rai channels things in case you had troubles connecting directly and wanted to try from there). The RAI’s geoblock is usually removed for Sanremo’s week, no need to create accounts or whatsoever to enjoy Sanremo online!! Remember you can rewatch the whole event and each performance on Raiplay few minutes after it has happened (and the whole week will be avaiable as well for basically the whole following year).
FESTIVAL LIS - songs and whole exhibition explained in signs language
FANTASANREMO - this year as well you can play while enjoying your Sanremo! How does it work? Every person “buys” 5 artisti and marks one of them as a captain. As in the last years, artists will have to do or say something while on stage to help you gain points (and also classification will have a say).
I’ll try to write down some more infos/links through the week.
——-
Hosts & Guests + Other Stuff
This years’ host will still be Amadeus (who choose the songs taking part into this Sanremo), a TV and radio host. He will be accompanied by a different co-host each night: Marco Mengoni (singer; first night); Giorgia (singer; second night); Teresa Mannino (actress, comedian; third night); Lorella Cuccarini (actress, tv host, dancer, dance teacher in AMICI tv show; fourth night); Fiorello (tv and radio host, comedian, singer; last night).
Some of the one-night guests during the week will be: John Travolta (actor, dancer); Giovanni Allevi (musician); Marco Mengoni (singer); Sabrina Ferilli (actress); Giorgia (singer) will celebrate her song "E poi"'s 30th anniversary; Russel Crowe (actor, singer); Eros Ramazzotti (singer) will celebrate his song "Una terra promessa"'s 40th anniversary; Roberto Bolle (dancer); the cast of "Mameli" (new serie about the guy who wrote our National anthem); Leo Gassman (actor, singer); the cast of "Il Mare fuori" (Raiplay serie); The Nuova Orchestra Santa Balera to celebrate "Romagna Mia"'s 70th anniversary; Gigliola Cinquetti (singer) will celebrate her song "Non ho l'età"'s 60th anniversary.
How it works
There will be 30 singers in the ARTISTI (artists) section. It will be the only section, as last year. 27 artists were chosen by Amadeus, while the other 3 are the winners of Sanremo Giovani (held in December 2023). The winner of the competition will represent Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest: if he/she/they won’t accept, the choice will be another artist, usually the 2nd classified or the next (the first one accepting). This year we're gonna listen to all the 30 songs on the first night. The 2nd and 3rd night, we'll get to listen to 15 songs each night. The artisti that are not performing during the 2nd night will introduce the performing ones and vice versa on the 3rd night. The artisti introducing the performing artisti will be decided by a public draw during the Sanremo's press conferences on the 2nd and 3rd day. On the 4th night, there will be the usual “covers” night: the artisti this year can choose any song, national or international, from any year (until December 2023) and by anyone (even themselves).
Day 1 - co-hosts: Marco Mengoni Prob. guests: Marco Mengoni; Zlatan Ibrahimovic; Federica Brignone; omaggio a Toto Cutugno; Banda dei Carabinieri + on the Costa Cruise: Tedua and in the square: Lazza We’ll listen to all the 30 songs (in order of performance: Clara, Sangiovanni, Fiorella Mannoia, La Sad, Irama, Ghali, Negramaro, annalisa, Mahmood, Diodato, Loredana Bertè, Geolier, Alessandra Amoroso, The Kolors, Angelina Mango, Il Volo, BigMama, Ricchie Poveri, Emma, RengaNek, Mr. Rain, Bnkr44, Gazzelle, Dargen D'Amico, Rose Villain, Santi Francesi, Fred De Palma, Maninni, Alfa, Il Tre). See this man?
Tumblr media
His name is Piero Angela.
Some say he's the italian David Attemborough.
I say David Attemborough is the british Piero Angela.
He's a journalist. Tv host. Science journalist. Jazz pianist.
He was born in Turin in 1928 and, it is worth noting, his father Carlo has been awarded the Medal of the "Righteous among the Nations".
Last year Piero Angela celebrated 70 years (don't know if you heard me right: 70 YEARS!!) of non-stop collaboration with italian national TV and radio broadcaster RAI. Hell, when he started working for RAI it was still a radio only broadcaster... tv didn't even exist in Italy yet.
He's been anchorman, reporter, war correspondent... but what's most famous for is QUARK.
Tumblr media
The scientific TV program that turned the air of Bach's Orchestral Suite no. 3 in D major into "The Quark Music"! That's right. No one in Italy knows what's the air of Bach's suite n.3 in D major is, but goddammit, everyone knows the "Quark Music"!
That's because the man himself, the program and its intro are such a huge part in the life of every italian, even of those who are not interested in science. Piero Angela and his angelic intro are one of the pillars of italian modern culture!
Proof to that, another pillar of italian culture, Topolino, celebrated Angela's 90th birthday in 2018 with a story, an interview and a very cool cover! Here's to you Peter Quarky:
Tumblr media
Why am I telling you all this?
Because Piero Angela passed away today, aged 93. But not before having written a really touching letter (like a boss!) thanking everyone who worked with him and all the common people who let him bring knowledge and science into their home with his very savoy care and kindness.
Right now for me is like loosing a very dear member of the family... you know, an odd granpa fixated with dinosaurs, planets and bacteria (I've still the complete collection of vhs he made on the dinosaurs and the one on the solar system) and I just wanted everyone to know about him, his impressive career and simply what a cool and kind person he was. A gentleman of old days.
To the stars, Piero... to the stars!
Piero Angela plays "As time goes by" in the program "Che Tempo Che Fa" in 2018.

Have you seen this childhood show: Winx Club (2004-2009), Italy and United States (English)

Commentary/Context/Memories: No submitted commentary.
[Mod A: I did see a couple of episodes but for some reason never really got into it (I was more of a Totally Spies! and 6teen girl). I do appreciate shows that are bright and colourful and I think it’s a crime that the CW life action show made it so grim and dark. It was about a fairy warrior, Bloom who trains at a fairy college (they turn into fairies to fight evil, not sure if they are humans originally) and meets the other fairies there, as well as witches and other powerful creatures. Each fairy has a speciality (such as Flora the Fairy of Nature, Techa the Fairy of Technology and so on) and their powers/aesthetic is related to their speciality. Weirdly, they have boyfriends that are part of the fairy college, but they can’t turn into fairies/have magical powers, they fight with laser weapons instead (justice for the boy fairies :( ). I do find the art style very nostalgic though (it’s very emblemic of the early 2000s European anime-influenced style that was very popular).]

haven't watched an italian series in a minute, and:
- gay teenagers written terribly by old white cishet guys ✔️
- shot terribly too, if the showrunner is to be believed (they cut the coming out scene and changed it to "i fell in love with someone like me", a phrase that has never been uttered by an irl teenager in the history of humankind) ✔️
- the kids do end up together, but it's forgotten immediately after their parents also get together, making them sort of siblings and they never talk about it again, so incest implication sort of ✔️
- but that doesn't stop them from queerbaiting us about it ✔️
- just make sure gay love is always unrequited ✔️
- even when the ppl involved actually do get to have sex, immediately minimize what happened because only piv missionary intercourse is in fact sex ✔️
- gay kissing is okay if in a dark setting with the camera quickly cutting away, with red lighting to underline the ~shocking reveal. but it's okay to linger on heteros kissing and fucking, even multiple cases when a 30+yo woman sleeps with a 17yo ✔️
- bisexuality is not real, you can only be straight or sad gay ✔️
- outing of a gay teenager, because of course ✔️
- another forced outing but this time by a well-meaning person, seen as positive ✔️
- the only actual bona fide coming out scene is cut off, showing only the before and after but not the actual coming out moment (at least it's full acceptance but jfc) ✔️
- gay bashing ✔️
- slurs. lots of sluts. slurs everywhere ✔️
- like, love interest yelling slurs at the protagonist levels of bad ✔️
- defending a gay kid getting bullied and gay bashed is Bad™ ✔️
- gay ppl do more crime on screen than actual gangsters ✔️
and these just off the top of my head

And nothing... you see Alberto Angela starting a new science tv program which is the direct heir to his father's Quark and suddenly everything is perfectly fine. Piero Angela never died. Quark never stopped. And everything is just the way it should be ❤️❤️
And he called it "Noos" which was the name of the spaceship Piero used to explore the cosmos in "Viaggio nel cosmo" as if that ship never stopped its journey.
Bless you, Alberto! Bless you! 🥺
