It also picked up nods in the same categories at the Bafta Awards where it again was thwarted by Death Becomes Her and The Last Of The Mohicans. It was recognised at the Oscars and Baftasīatman Returns received Oscar nominations in the Best Visual Effects and Best Makeup and Hairstyling categories but lost out to Death Becomes Her and Bram Stoker’s Dracula respectively. Written and performed by Australian troubadour Vance Joy, acoustic ballad Riptide reached No.10 on the UK charts in 2013.įeaturing the lyric ‘I swear she’s destined for the screen/Closest thing to Michelle Pfeiffer that you’ve ever seen’, the song was partially inspired by the actress’ performance in Batman Returns. McDonald’s was forced to scrap its Happy Meal tie-in following floods of complaints from parents about the film’s violent tone. Reviewers weren’t the only ones to get a little upset about Batman Returns’ inherent darkness. Tim Burton’s Batman films are virtually technicolour fairy tales compared to Christopher Nolan’s gritty reboot, but back in 1992 critics weren’t prepared for dark, comic-book tales.Įsteemed reviewer Roger Ebert argued that ‘superheroes and film noir don’t go together’, while the Los Angeles Times described its tone as ‘claustrophobic, oppressive’ and one which ‘strangles almost all the enjoyment out of the movie’. In a 2007 interview she revealed she never wanted to see a Catwoman costume again, perhaps due to the fact that it was so tightly sealed she only had a brief amount of time to act her lines before she passed out. Michelle Pfeiffer wasn’t a particular fan of the wardrobe department’s work. Indeed, 12 king penguins and 30 African penguins were used over the course of the shoot, with men in suits, robotics and CGI standing in for the real thing during the more difficult scenes. While computer generated animation was used for the bats, The Penguin’s bird army was a mixture of nature and technology. Sadly, the aging star fell ill shortly before filming and he had to be replaced by Pee-wee Herman, aka Paul Reubens, who also reprised the role for several episodes of Gotham.

The original Penguin was supposed to make a cameoīurgess Meredith, who played The Penguin in the cartoonish 60s TV series, signed on to play the Penguin’s father Tucker Cobblepot. The director only agreed to return when he was given more creative control and allowed to commission a rewritten script from Heathers screenwriter Waters. Tim Burton appeared to have had enough of the Caped Crusader after bringing him back to life with 1989’s Batman, describing the possibility of a sequel as a ‘most dumbfounded idea’. Marlon Wayans had not only been cast as Robin in Batman Returns, he’d also been measured up for a suit.īut he never got to wear it onscreen when the sidekick was rested due to the film having too many characters. These included John Candy, Bob Hoskins, Dean Martin, Christopher Lloyd and Dustin Hoffman. Marlon Brando was just one of several big-name actors who were considered for the role of The Penguin before it was given to Danny DeVito. Marlon Brando could have played The Penguin The musical icon, who instead took a role in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, had previously passed on another role Walker then assumed – Max Zorin in A View to Kill. But none other than David Bowie was the first name that producers had in mind. Named after Nosferatu actor Max Schreck, Batman Returns’ all-human villain was played by Christopher Walken. Producers wanted David Bowie to play Max Schreck Madonna, Cher, Raquel Welch, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Bridget Fonda were just some of the other names in contention for the role.īut no one was more distraught on missing out than Sean Young – the actress actually turned up to the production offices in a homemade Catwoman outfit to demand an audition.

Can you do a Ted lasso x reader, I just want something cute maybe a first date scenario
No content warnings - just pure fluff
You’re not sure if you regret telling Ted that you have a bucket list of cheesy rom-com moments that you wanted to experience before you died. This is mostly because you now found yourself on a rowing boat screeching in joyful fear from Ted splashing you with one of the oars. You wanted it to be like Bridget Jones where Daniel takes Bridget rowing and recites poetry to her and you know that is what Ted aimed for but at the minute it’s more like a life boat from the titanic.
Ted, being the gentleman that he is, had packed a picnic of all your favourite snacks and drinks along with a blanket for you to sit on in the boat so that its a bit softer underneath you but, due to the sneak-splash attack from Ted, it turned from a defence to a towel to just a soggy piece of material. Thank goodness for the beautiful spring sun that helped to dry it out a bit so you could sit on it once you were finished
After a while Ted asked if you wanted to try rowing and if you couldn’t do it, he would teach you, you knew it was just an excuse to be as close to you as he could but you weren’t going to complain, you liked the comfort you felt from him being near you and the safeness you felt from him. This was not the best idea that either you have had because swapping seats in the middle of a river was a very wobbly task, Ted is a sporty man he knows how to manoeuvre himself in agile situations compared to you he was a swan and you were the penguin at the back of the pact that slips on nothing. Ted can’t help but chuckle as he watched you keep yourself as level as possible taking small crouching steps over to where he was sat so that there was no risk of you falling in, it took a lot more effort compared to his stretch his legs out twist and sit. At that moment you cursed his long strong legs, you should have said that you needed help with the rowing so that you could sit between them but it’s too late now, you’d just have to wait until you get on dry land to try get close to him again.
Surprising both you and Ted, you managed to get the boat back in the dock before your time was up and you found a quiet spot near a tree to have your picnic. The blanket had dried out enough now for you to both sit on it and luckily the food had been in a waterproof bag so you weren’t dealing with soggy sandwiches, although the cheese sandwiches that were pack could have done with something to give them a bit more moisture. Sandwich making is not your forte, Ted and Beard are the only people you know who have mastered a good cheese sandwich. Everyone knows that Ted can talk for the world and listening to him just talk about the first thing that comes into his mind is just wonderful and you could listen to it all day, which is exactly what you did all afternoon until the sun started to set and night start to creep in with the cold leading Ted to giving you his jumper to wrap around your shoulders on the walk home. On your walk home you found yourselves taking a longer route just so you could spend more time just talking with each other until you realised the time and finally diverted to your door so Ted could get some rest and you could think about today over and over until you fell asleep

Welcome Post
Hi! I’m Gwen. Currently applying for a PhD in wildlife and fisheries. I’m 24, have two younger siblings, and 6 pets (3 dogs, 2 rabbits, and a cat). I write a lot of fanfiction for the Penguins of Madagascar fandom, but I also write on original things, too.
Main Penguins of Madagascar Fanfics:
-A Scientific Match
Summary: Kowalski, a penguin scientist, has tried again to build his Love-u-Lator invention. After a few scans of nothing, the device suggests a potential soul-mate match in New Jersey. He chooses to follow the device to see if his device is working properly (and potentially find himself some romance).
-A Scientific Conundrum
Summary: Sequel to A Scientific Match, Kowalski and Francis now find themselves in the situation of figuring out the conundrum that is their newly established relationship and all its ups and downs. Join them as they face new challenges such as Blowhole's family, other enemies, and whatever chaotic situation they manage to get themselves into. A Kowalski x Blowhole (Franski) fic. (Other minor focus ships may appear later).
-Scientist Overboard
Summary: Francis and Kowalski have been dating for over a year when Kowalski and the others go on a mission out at sea. Kowalski finds himself washed overboard during a bad storm, waking up without any memory on an island. He and his spirit guide then attempt to return to New York while the others try to find him. A Blowhole x Kowalski fic.
-Haunted Mansion
Summary: Blowhole, Kowalski, and their children decide to go on a family vacation, but get sidetracked by a haunted mansion's advertisement that Blowhole couldn't pass up. Will include 2 guest OCs of my friend @insert-meaningful-username . A Franski fic with bonus fankids.
-Caretaker of Madagascar
Summary: Some believe misfortune can bring people together. Others believe that destiny has the power to interconnect lives, whether those lives wanted to or not. Call it a coincidence. Call it fate. Call it a despicable force of nature. Either way, nothing could've stopped the fact that Bridget Ailith, a cantankerous new zookeeper, found herself forced to team up with the Penguins to undo a machine's disastrous effects. Doesn't help that those penguins are now— (CO-written with @insert-meaningful-username)
Original WIPs
-Harris & Bell
Summary: Gregory and Kendall are investigating a series of murders that have been appearing by the Thames. Not only is a killer on the loose, but their ability to continue working alongside the police is at risk as Chief McIntosh is under review. The two have to show that they are useful compatriots to the department, even if their methods are….questionable occasionally.
-Hidden Earth Chronicles
Summary: Local Necromancer Vasco has just returned home to find his beloved wife missing. He tries getting help but everyone tells him she must have left him and to get over it, but he knows his Estella too well for that to be the case.
-Obscure Science
Summary: Rejected scientist Dr. Darwin Rose finds new employment with an off-the-record agency that focuses on well…obscure and bizarre occurrences, whether they be paranormal, supernatural, fantastical, or seem like something from science fiction, this agency investigates it all. Darwin is paired up with another scientist, Dr. Cassidy Blue, and together they have some crazy escapades.
-Tropical Storm
Summary: Martin along Evy and Diego, are newly moving into the San Diego Zoo. However, Martin’s life is unexpectedly rocked when a secret agent accidentally drops a piece of top secret spy equipment among his belongings. Now he’s been recruited by the local espionage squad. Together they keep the zoo safe from assorted enemies, as well as face international threats.
-My Baby’s a Werewolf
Summary: Single Dad, Sebastian’s, toddler daughter, Amber, gets bitten by a “big dog” one evening at the park and becomes a little werepup. Now her dad is handling the pressures of being a single dad as well as trying to get his daughter back to normal.

Bridget Riley
She began painting figure subjects in a semi-impressionist manner, then changed to pointillism around 1958, mainly producing landscapes Polyvinyl acetate paint on hardboard Screen-print on paper Screen-print on paper.
Bridget Riley
Fall 1963
this particular piece show cases her work of OP art with the lines making it look like its moving and shining, the use of simple black & white colour scheme makes this piece really affective as it looks like its moving the viewers brain adds in other colours. this piece is a very detailed painting of delicately placed lines it is very purposeful and detailed. You can see a lot of this work on posters and bill board work as it is so eye catching. I took inspiration from Riley's work and applied it to my own screen prints well the part where i put it through the photocopier and made it seem like it was moving.
Her study of the Pointillists, particularly Georges Seurat, led her to experiment with colour juxtaposition and optical effects, and under the influence of Victor Vasarely and others, her work took on a geometric abstraction, in which intricate patterns of black and white. Later, alternating colours were calculated to produce illusions of movement and typography Which is what this current project is all about creating striking artwork involving type and words from our little black penguin books creating a new narrative based on what we have read. my work isn't greatly influenced by her work however it is very interesting to try and incorporate into my work.
her paintings and prints make the viewer question her work and make them think and try understand her pieces Riley experiments with many structural patterns such as squares, ovals, stripes, and curves in various ways incorporating colours to explore the physical and psychological responses of the eye. Her paintings inspired textile designs and psychedelic posters over the decades. you can often she poster work inspired by her approach.

SPOOKY PALEONTOLOGY: THE (OC)CULT OF NESSIE
One reason I haven’t been blogging as much here is that I’ve been busy with various academic projects including two book chapters, submissions for conference presentations, serving as a member of the steering committee for this year’s Religion and Monsters panel at the AAR, getting the long awaited second installment of Scholars Talking Toku up, and preparing to start applying for PhD programs at the end of the year.
One of the books I recently contributed to is tentatively titled “Paranormal and Popular-Culture” and should be coming out from Routledge early next year. The volume was conceived and edited by Darryl Caterine and John W. Morehead. My contribution was a chapter on the intersection of cryptozoology and science-fiction in which I endeavored to show that the central aims and obsessions of cryptozoology (i.e. the discovery of monstrous creatures alive in the world today) can be found to have originated in the realm of fantastic fiction.
My original draft for this chapter was over 11,000-words and had to be drastically reduced at the behest of the publisher (actually the entire book had to be shortened apparently). So I decided I could make use of some of that research here on my blog and just in time for Halloween. In this case I want to talk about lake monsters. Spooky lake monsters. Specifically the Loch Ness Monster.
Though reports of a monster living in Loch Ness don’t begin until 1933 the idea of such a creature dwelling somewhere within the British Isles can be found in The Lair of the White Worm; a horror novel by Dracula author Bram Stoker originally published in 1911 by Rider and Son of London with interior color illustrations by Tarot Card artist Pamela Colman Smith. In 1925 an abridged version of the novel was issued, losing more than 100 pages and 12 chapters.
Set in Derbyshire, England The Lair of the White Worm concerns Australian transplant Adam Salton who has traveled to meet his great-uncle, Richard Salton, as Adam is destined to become the heir of the family estate. As Adam quickly learns, however, high strangeness of various kinds is at work in the surrounding countryside including the death of livestock, mysterious black snakes slithering about, a child with vampire-like bite marks on her neck, hostile pigeons, and the mysterious Arabella March who lives nearby in a house located in Diana’s Grove; an area known to have once been the center of pagan religious rites.
Eager to get to the bottom of these various mysteries, Richard introduces Adam to his friend Sir Nathaniel de Salis; who fulfills the Van Helsing role in this novel of occult scholar. In Chapter 5, “The White Worm,” Sir Nathaniel fills Adam in on the various legends concerning Diana’s Grove including that it is the lair of a monstrous albino serpent or dragon; what the Anglo-Saxon’s called a ‘wyrm,’ hence the novel’s title. When Adam displays some skepticism about such tales Sir Nathaniel informs him that…
“A glance at a geological map will show that whatever truth there may have been of the actuality of such monsters in the early geologic periods, at least there was plenty of possibility. In England there were originally vast plains where the plentiful supply of water could gather. The streams were deep and slow, and there were holes of abysmal depth, where any kind and size of antediluvian monster could find a habitat. In places, which now we can see from our windows, were mud-holes a hundred or more feet deep. Who can tell us when the age of the monsters which flourished in slime came to an end? There must have been places and conditions which made for greater longevity, greater size, greater strength than was usual. Such over-lappings may have come down even to our earlier centuries.” (p. 187 in Penguin Classic’s Dracula’s Guest and Other Weird Tales, 2007)
Here we see that Sir Nathaniel is something of a proto-cryptozoologist and like his 20th-Century contemporaries advances the idea that the menacing white worm, like Nessie, is a prehistoric holdover who has somehow managed to survive for millions of years in the supposedly “abysmal depths” of the United Kingdom’s many lakes and lochs. Of course, the novel ends with the revelation that the worm is real and dwells in a pit beneath Arabella March’s home in Diana’s Grove where March worships and feeds the beast who in turn appears to endow her with evil supernatural powers. Ultimately, Adam is able to dispatch the monster via the handy combination of dynamite and a well-placed lightning bolt.
In 1988, English filmmaker Ken Russell (1927-2011) filmed a theatrical adaptation of The Lair of the White Worm. Russell’s version actually puts more emphasis on the story’s latent paleontological elements. Rather than being set in the early 20th-Centrury the story is moved up to the present day (i.e. 1980s) and Adam Salton is recast as Angus Flint (Peter Capaldi; the Twelfth Doctor); a Scottish archaeologist excavating the site of a Roman era Christian convent in Derbyshire. Among the ruins Flint discovers what appears to be the skull of a dinosaur! The locals connect the skull to the legend of the d'Ampton wyrm, said to have been slain in Stonerich Cavern by John d'Ampton, the ancestor of current Lord of the Manor, James d'Ampton (Hugh Grant of Four Weddings and a Funeral [94] and Bridget Jones’s Diary [2001]). Flint attends a party at d’Ampton Manor where he meets James and the audience is treated to a rocking rendition of the legend of the d’Ampton wyrm (based on the real-life legend of the Lambton Worm).
Stonerich Cavern is connected to the home of the enigmatic Lady Sylvia Marsh (Amanda Donohoe) who steals the skull from Flint and also abducts his girlfriend Eve. While a symbiotic relationship between Marsh and the White Worm is only hinted at in Stoker’s novel, it is explicit in Russell’s film with Marsh assuming the form of a silver-skinned serpentine vampire who’s appearance I would have to guess was inspired by the look of a similar monster seen in Hammer’s The Reptile (1966, dir. John Gilling). It is soon revealed that Marsh is the immortal priestess of an ancient pre-Christian snake god named Dionin whose next sacrifice is going to be Eve. In order to rescue his girlfriend and expunge the evil from the countryside Flint enlists the aid of James and the two mount an assault on Marsh and Dionin.
For most cryptozoology enthusiasts, Nessie is believed to be an extant plesiosaur which somehow survived the K–Pg extinction event some 66-million-years ago. As a result the idea of Nessie being related to anything like the subject of Stoker’s The Lair of the White Worm – with its occult evil, secret cults, human sacrifice and vampires – may seem strange indeed. However at least one noted Nessie research drew just such a circle of connections around the Loch Ness Monster. That man was Fredrick William Holiday (1921–1979).
Like most Nessie researchers, Holiday started out proposing that Nessie was a prehistoric survivor. Not a plesiosaur but rather a Tully Monster (Tullimonstrum gregarium); a genus of soft-bodied bilaterian that lived during Late Carboniferous period some 323.2 million-years-ago to 298.9 million-years-ago and whose fossil remains were discovered in Illinois in the late 1960s. The exact nature of the Tully Monster is actually a source of great paleontological controversy which you can learn about here. Like all cryptozoologists expounding prehistoric survivor paradigm theories Holiday was at a loss to explain how the warm water Tully Monster had survived hundreds of millions of years in a cold lake on the other side of the world. He also had the not insignificant problem that the fossils of Tully Monster indicated that its maximum size was about 14-inches, pretty puny for the Loch Ness Monster. Nevertheless, Holiday put forth his Tully Monster theory in his 1968 book The Great Orm of Loch Ness; “orm” being another variation on “wyrm.”
However, as Holiday continued to research the Loch Ness Monster he began noticing strange things happening to him. This included his camera always malfunctioning whenever he tried to take a shot of Nessie, glimpses of mysterious orbs of light, apparent UFO sightings and experiences of missing time. As a result by the early 1970s Holiday ceased promoting the idea that Nessie was a Tully Monster and started claiming that it was a supernatural entity that was both the basis of ancient dragon legends and somehow connected to UFOs; hence the title of his second book: The Dragon and the Disc (1973). This trend in Holiday’s research continued and by the late 70s Holiday was apparently wrapped up in all kinds of occult phenomena and evidently claiming that Nessie was the object of reverence of a secret dragon cult practicing human sacrifice hidden in the surrounding Inverness environs. All this prompted Holiday’s final book The Goblin Universe (published in 1986, after his death) which was co-authored with sci-fi writer Colin Wilson; author of The Space Vampires (1976), which was later turned into the film Lifeforce (1986) directed by Tobe Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Poltergeist) and scripted by Dan O’Bannon (Alien). You want a crazy Halloween double-feature? Watch Russell’s The Lair of the White Worm and Hooper’s Lifeforce back-to-back.

Publishing Houses
When contemplating publishing house, I found that it is essential that people firstly need to understand what makes a good publishing house as you need to set the standard. Overall from what I can see, a publishing house becomes successful when it has a good reputation with not only authors, but literary agents. You need to play by the rules, keep to your genre and have a good track record in that genre. You also need a team that is dedicated.
I decided to look for how people can decide which publishing house to go with which would give me insight as to what sort of Publishing House I could design. I found that people use many sources before they decide, and I think it is important to look around and explore first instead of settling on the first one they come across as this can really make a difference to how successful an author they become.
• One obvious way is to start googling. There are a lot of websites, blogs or social media where people talk about their experiences. I find this would be a great start as people can be brutal with feedback on social media etc so if there is any negative feedback about a publishing house, then it is more than likely be online
• You can also look to online sources to see how the publishing house promotes its authors and also how they interact with the readers
• If you have made a cookbook, then it would be a bad choice to go with a publishing house that specialises in architecture, so it is best to research what the specialties are and find one that specialises in the type of book you have written
• One way I had not considered before researching was that authors and agents can look at the bestsellers list and which are the publishing houses that have published these books

On receiving the 2019 award for his debut novel In Our Mad and Furious City, Guy Gunaratne said: “Dylan Thomas has always meant a lot to me, he’s a writer I’ve always turned to for inspiration. Batman Returns is a 1992 American superhero film directed by Tim Burton, based on the DC Comics character Batman. It is a sequel to the 1989 film Batman and the second installment of Warner Bros. initial Batman film series, with Michael Keaton reprising the role of Bruce Wayne / Batman. The film, produced by Denise Di Novi and Burton, also stars Danny DeVito, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, Michael Gough, Pat Hingle, and Michael Murphy. In Batman Returns, Batman must prevent the Penguin from killing all of Gotham City's firstborn sons while dealing with Selina Kyle/Catwoman, the former secretary of businessman Max Shreck and who seeks vengeance against Shreck for attempting to kill her to hide his own plans to bring the city under his control.
Burton originally did not want to direct another Batman film. Warner Bros. developed a script with Sam Hamm which had the Penguin and Catwoman going after hidden treasure. Burton agreed to return after they granted him more creative control and replaced Hamm with Daniel Waters. After a falling out, Waters was removed from the project and Wesley Strick was chosen to do an uncredited rewrite shortly before filming. This included normalizing dialogue, fleshing out the Penguin's motivations and master plan and removing scenes due to budget concerns. Strick continued working as the on-set writer all through filming, an early trailer credited Strick as co-screenwriter with Waters having sole story credit but after a dispute from Hamm he received no credit whatsoever. Annette Bening was originally cast as Catwoman but became pregnant and was replaced with Pfeiffer.
Batman Returns was released on June 19, 1992. It grossed $266.8 million worldwide on a budget of $80 million and received positive reviews. Critics praised its action sequences, performances, Danny Elfman's score, effects, and villains, although its dark tone was criticized. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Visual Effects and Best Makeup, as well as two BAFTA awards. A sequel, Batman Forever, was released in 1995, with Val Kilmer replacing Keaton as Batman.
Plot
In the prologue, socialites Tucker and Esther Cobblepot give birth to a deformed baby boy, Oswald. Disgusted by his appearance and wild demeanor, they confine the baby to a cage and ultimately throw him into the sewer, where he is discovered by a family of penguins at Gotham Zoo.
Thirty-three years later, millionaire Max Shreck proposes to build a power plant to supply Gotham City with energy, though he is opposed by the city mayor. During Shreck's speech, Gotham is attacked by a disgraced former circus troupe, the Red Triangle Gang. Despite the efforts of Batman to stop the violence, Shreck is abducted and taken to the sewer, where he meets Oswald Cobblepot, the gang's secret leader now known as the Penguin. The Penguin blackmails Shreck with evidence of his corporate crimes into helping him return to the surface, and he accepts. Meanwhile, Shreck's secretary, Selina Kyle, discovers the true purpose of Shreck's power plant to drain Gotham of its energy and bring the city under Shreck's control. Shreck pushes her out of a window to silence her, but she survives the fall and vows revenge, taking up the mantle of Catwoman.
The Penguin makes his presence known by "rescuing" the Mayor's baby from a staged kidnapping attempt, and requests to be allowed into the Hall of Records to find his parents. Batman's alter-ego, Bruce Wayne, voices his suspicions about the Penguin's true motives, and investigates his background and connection to the Red Triangle Gang. During a meeting with Shreck, Wayne meets Kyle and the two become attracted to one another. In order to remove his enemies, Shreck pushes for the Penguin to run for mayor and discredit the current mayor by having the Red Triangle Gang wreak havoc on the city. Batman intervenes and meets Catwoman as she attempts to sabotage one of Shreck's businesses; she escapes, but is injured and swears revenge on Batman by allying with the Penguin to frame him for an undiscussed crime.
As Wayne and Kyle begin a romantic relationship, the Penguin abducts Gotham's Ice Princess and kills her, framing Batman for the act, at the same time sabotaging his Batmobile to rampage throughout Gotham (until Batman disconnects the controlling device), and ends his partnership with Catwoman, who didn't anticipate the murder, when she rejects his advances; he attempts to kill her with one of his flying umbrellas, but she survives after falling into a greenhouse. During the chase, Batman records the Penguin's disparaging remarks about the people of Gotham and later plays them during his next speech, destroying his image and forcing him to retreat to the sewer, where he reveals his plan to abduct and kill all of Gotham's firstborn sons as revenge for what his parents did to him. At a charity ball hosted by Shreck, Wayne and Kyle meet and discover each other's secret identities. The Penguin appears and reveals his plan, intending to take Shreck's son, Chip, with him, but Shreck gives himself up in his son's stead.
Batman foils the kidnappings and heads for the Penguin's lair. The Penguin attempts to have his army of penguins bomb the city and kill everyone in Gotham, though Batman and his butler, Alfred, jam the signal and order the penguins to head back to the sewer. Batman arrives and confronts the Penguin. In the ensuing fight, the Penguin falls through a window into the sewer's toxic water. Shreck escapes but is confronted by Catwoman, who intends to kill him. Batman pleads for Kyle to stop, unmasking himself in the process. Shreck draws a gun and shoots Wayne, and then shoots Kyle multiple times, but she survives and electrocutes herself and Shreck with a stun gun. Wayne, who was wearing body armour, finds Shreck's corpse but Kyle is nowhere to be found. The Penguin emerges from the water, but eventually dies from his injuries and from the toxic sewage, and his penguin family lay his body to rest in the water. In the aftermath, as Alfred drives him home, Wayne sees Kyle's silhouette in an alley but only finds her cat, who he decides to take home with him. The Bat-Signal appears in the sky as Catwoman, who survived, watches.

Cristi Conaway as The Ice Princess: A Christmas-themed beauty queen and model of Gotham City.
Rick Zumwalt as The Tattooed Strongman: A member of the Red Triangle Circus Gang. He survives the first attack on Gotham City, but is killed during the second attack by one of his bombs when Batman throws him into a hole before the explosion.
Anna Katarina as The Poodle Lady: A member of the Red Triangle Circus Gang. She survives all three attacks on Gotham City, but she runs away along with her poodle to escape from Batman during the third attack, abandoning her teammates.
Paul Reubens as The Penguin's Father (Tucker Cobblepot): The father of Oswald Cobblepot and husband of Esther Cobblepot. He and his wife abandoned their son by throwing him into Gotham City's park river after realizing that he could be a danger to society after he killed their cat. Burgess Meredith, the actor who played the Penguin in the 1960s Batman TV series, was originally asked to play Tucker, but he declined due to his health problems which culminated with his death in 1997.[12][7] Reubens would later reprise his role as the Penguin's father in the 2016 second season of the television series Gotham, though named Elijah Van Dahl and set in a different continuity.
Diane Salinger as The Penguin's Mother (Esther Cobblepot): The mother of Oswald Cobblepot and wife of Tucker Cobblepot. She and her husband abandoned their son by throwing him into Gotham City's park river after realizing that he could be a danger to society after he killed their cat.

post pecking pool party
part of advanced PLACEMENT: an ars PARADOXICA high school au about a gang of queer teen nerds, by @estherroberts , @podcastmecaptain, and @lizzieraindrops
all three of the aformentioned dorks are equally responsible for the hijinks found in this post.

june obviously has a pool
jack notices it through a window and immediately goes to tell everyone
much to june’s chagrin
“is it heated”
“if it isn’t will it keep you people OUT- aaand they’re already gone”
“fuck”
none of them have suits and honestly most people wouldn’t fit in june’s anyway because she is built like an amazon and towers over them
they swim in their clothes or their underwear depending their level of comfort
helen’s somehow already floating around in an inflatable mermaid clamshell with a pearl pillow
she’s a queen, literally, venus,
it’s way too much for everyone, sally is compelled to get on her knees. she then falls into the pool
anthony cries
honestly he would be crying even if he wasn’t drunk
june and anthony have a moment staring dumbstruck at helen and sigh in unison
they’re kind of disgusted that they’re doing it in synchrony but helen just has that effect on everyone
“can you believe she’s dating us” anthony asks, not taking his eyes off of helen
“no” june replies, her gaze locked in the same direction
june trips anthony into the pool and blows a kiss to her girlfriend, who catches it magnanimously
jack drops his phone in
deliberately
it seemed funny at the time
two minutes later he whispers “oh, fuck” to himself and dives in after it
he keeps dropping it and eventually just whispers “bye”
they play chicken
sally rides on anthony’s shoulders
esther rides on jack’s
but they’re not athletes. they’re nerds.
esther and sally sort of swat at each other but they can’t really grapple properly
and anthony and jack are both drunk and tired so
both topple over very quickly indeed
june and quentin claim the hot tub away from all the nerds
anthony recruits jack and together they bring a bucket of cold water to dump it on them
they are forced to rejoin the masses
june gets revenge by dunking both of them
esther likes to sit on the bottom of the pool with her hair floating around her and sally waves to her every time she passes by
there’s an impromptu singing
“unDA DA SEA”
“UNDA DA SEA”
“DARLING ITS BETTER DOWN WHERE ITS WETTER TAKE IT FROM ME”
“WE GET IT YOU’RE GAY”
“…”
“…”
“OH MY FUCKING GO D”
lots more under the read more!
helen actually does a drunk rendition of how far i’ll go and she temporarily is an actual siren
she breaks the spell by giggling and making a bunch of dolphin noises
sally cannonballs and splashes everyone
penny is just like, doing laps
she asks jack to race her but he can only doggie paddle
esther hands him a kick board as a joke and he actually uses it
he still loses the race
tho he uses it the rest of the night so he doesn’t drown
bridget dangles her feet in until esther gets ahold of her ankles
they take turns carrying each other bridal style all around the pool after that
quentin hums the jaws theme and everyone is uncomfortable
esther, jack, and june act as a panel of esteemed judges to a diving contest
anthony belly flops
sally just does another cannonball
penny’s is decent? but
even drunk, helen’s swan dive is better than anyone’s and she wins by a landslide
bridget squirts jets of water at everyone
it starts a huge nine way war
there are some alliances
some unusual alliances
bridget and quentin team up and have a battle against sally and penny, for example
jack retrieves the bucket
esther shakes her hair like a dog and splatters everyone
but everyone gets betrayed eventually and they’re all soaked anyway
who isn’t
it’s a pool
it ends when helen bounces on top of her clamshell and it sends out a fucking tidal wave
no survivors
sally and jack team up and somehow steal anthony’s shorts
sally to jack: “i don’t generally go for taking off people’s pants but what if we just. fuckin. stole anthony’s shorts”
they don’t remember what they did with them but they are Lost To The Sands Of Time
anthony is nonplussed by these events
anthony swims under the clam thing and starts drunkenly pushing it around the pool
he’s giggling
sally steps on that moving pool vacuum thing and screams like a white girl in a horror movie
the neighbors yell at them and june sneaks toward them with a hose
everyone frantically shakes their head and the cops are, not called
quentin sighs happily bc that’s his girl
sally gets cold first because she is Tiny
june is asked to get towels for everyone bc no one thought this through
she almost tosses all of the towels into the pool but helen catches her
esther and jack huddle together like tiny penguins and she rests her head on his shoulder
the girlfriend gang is all flopped on each other
quentin has his head on penny’s stomach, looking up at the sky
she’s holding jack’s free hand
anthony has his arms wrapped around sally
they eventually morph into one big cuddle pile
once they go inside, june doles out as many large shirts/pjs that she has
sally and esther are literally swimming in all options, help them, they are smol
Tiny
everyone has something to change into, and then they raid her house for blankets and pillows and pile back into the living room
they make a pillow fort that’s more like A CASTLE bc they have so many scientists trying to physics the bedding
“i’m a fucking engineer you gotta put THE DAMN COUCH CUSHIONS AT AN ANGLE OF-”
sally has twinkle lights and strings them up
“where the FUC did those come from” “my bag” “WHAT”
she has an electronics kit in her bag at all times and the lights are kind of part of it so she always has them on hand
she also pulls out a rotting potato battery and runs out to chuck it over the neighbors’ fence
jack: so, uh, what’s the sleeping arrangement here?
june: the FLOOR
jack: no i mean like so many of you are like dating each other how do you decide who cuddles who
sally: heLLO
sally: we ALL cuddle each other, we were JUST doing that like 20 minutes ago?
everyone: yeah she’s right
quentin has the genius idea to bring in a space heater and put it on low
they are so cozy
ultimate cozy
heads drop to shoulders and laps
everyone falls asleep on each other
someone wakes everyone up crunching popcorn and everyone swears but they have no idea who it was in the morning
esther insists it was the tiiiIIIimMMmmE ghosts
she tries to tell a ghost story about popcorn but she’s so tired and it’s so bad and she falls asleep in the middle of it
everyone else was already asleep again by that point
“partridge!” sally hisses at about 4 in the morning
“grissom? what in sweet jesus’ tits, go, to, sleep,”
“i can’t sleep”
“mmmph.” anthony rolls onto his back, and then rolls to face her
“what’s gonna help with that?”
“i don’t know, how do you feel about reciting the entire periodic table of the elements? that’d be soothing”
he chortles “not on your life”
in the dim light he can see her roll her eyes “fine”
“come here”
she curls closer to him and rests her head on his chest
“better?”
“mmmhmm”

Hey, since you're url is about Pride and Prejudice (my favs), do you mind me asking what adaptations you've seen/read? And if anything surpasses the original novel? I haven't seen as much as I need to and i need recommendations haha ^^
((OOC: Oh wow. You have no idea the monster you have just unleashed haha…I was lucky enough that even though I studied the book in school, it didn’t ruin the story for me (sometimes there’s nothing like writing essays about a book to kill it for you). I really loved the nuances that studying it allowed me to see, and that has affected my experiences of both reading and watching the story (especially everything to do with Mr. Collins - he kills me). No adaptation has ever surpassed the original story for me, but that doesn’t mean they weren’t amazing too…So far that includes:
The BBC TV series (so many times) (Oh, Colin! *swoons*)The 2005 film adaptation (I am a very big fan of Macfadyen’s Darcy ngl)The Penguin audiobooks – read by Joanna David, who plays Mrs Gardiner (Lizzie’s aunt) in the TV series.
Read and watched Austenland, which is not quite an adaptation, but SO good.
Becoming Jane is also a lovely film and sort of takes the idea that Jane’s own life influenced a lot of Pride and Prejudice (it gets a bit carried away but…James McAvoy…)
Are we counting Bridget Jones’ Diary? Because YES.
*cough* Bride and Prejudice *cough* (its so awful its good, but it has been a really long time since I watched it so maybe I’m remembering it wrong.)
I still haven’t seen Pride and Prejudice and Zombies but I’m not sure how good it’s meant to be?
I have also just been reliably informed that there is a modern Mormon adaptation that I am now going to be forced to watch. I will report back.
– I’ve also visited the properties in the U.K. where Rosings Park was filmed for the 2005 film (Stourhead), and Pemberly for both the film and BBC TV series (Chatsworth House and Lyme Park respectively.) They. Are. Beautiful. –
But like, its not like I’m obsessed or anything….))

Timestamp #TW27: Children of Earth – Day One

Timestamp #TW27: Children of Earth – Day One
Torchwood: Children of Earth – Day One
(1 episode, s03e01, 2009)
The Home Office gets explosive results.
Scotland, 1965: A bus full of children stops at an undisclosed location. When they stop, the children disembark and are walked toward a bright light. All of them but one walk into the light. The lone child flees as the light flares.
Cardiff, 2009: Gwen is withdrawing money from an ATM when she notices that the children around her have frozen in place, totally catatonic. The same is happening all around the area. As suddenly as it began, the phenomenon ends and the children start moving again as if nothing happened.
Gwen heads to Torchwood and begins to investigate the oddity. We’re reminded that Jack, Ianto, and Gwen are all that remains of Torchwood Three.
In a nearby hospital, a patient dies on the table. The doctor, Rupesh Patanjali, informs Ianto and Jack, believing that they are the patient’s neighbors. Jack and Ianto ask for a moment with the body, which they then open with a laser saw and withdraw an alien organ. They’re discovered by the doctor and leave with the organ, but before they leave Patanjali informs them of several more missing bodies. Jack and Ianto refuse to help due to all of the red tape involved in the investigation.
We are next introduced to a new set of players. Lois Habiba is starting a job working for Bridget Spears, who is the assistant to the Permanent Secretary to the Home Office, John Frobisher. Secretary Frobisher (who looks very familiar) is visited by UNIT Colonel Oduya who informs him that the phenomenon with the children happened all around the world.
Torchwood discovers this at the same time. They’re naturally concerned, and so is UNIT, the latter going to yellow alert while they investigate if the incident was extraterrestrial or not. Obviously, everyone wants to keep it quiet.
Jack is perturbed that Martha Jones chose now to go on her honeymoon – to whom, we do not yet know – but luckily Dr. Patanjali arrives at Roald Dahl Plass just as Torchwood needs a doctor. Jack and Ianto lured him in just like they did with Gwen. Naturally, Gwen goes above to serve as a recruitment officer and review the files that Patanjali brought. While they talk, the children all stop again.
But this time, they scream. Then they chant, in unison, “We are coming.”
It happened worldwide. It also happened with one adult, Timothy White, a patient in a mental institution in East Grinstead.
Patanjali is paged back to the hospital as the Home Office is flooded with calls. Frobisher gets a visit from Mr. Dekker, the head of MI5’s technology division and alien monitoring, who tells him that “the 456” have re-established contact for the first time since 1965. At the same time, Lois takes a call from Torchwood, which the system flags as classified. Using her supervisor’s credentials, she learns more than she bargained for.
Frobisher meets with Prime Minister Brian Green, a man who is a bit overwhelmed with the various alien threats looming over them. Frobisher suggests keeping certain historical events off the record, and Green wants to keep his name out of it. Frobisher gets the privilege of a “blank page”.
Gwen discovers that every child worldwide was speaking English, and Jack and Ianto agree that they need to interview one of them. Gwen drives to meet Timothy while Jack visits his daughter, Alice Carter, and her son Steven, his grandson.
Wait… what?
They catch up for a few minutes and muse about Jack’s immortality, but in the end, Alice refuses to let Jack use Steven for Torchwood experimentation. So, Jack turns to Patanjali instead.
Ianto visits his sister, Rhiannon Davies, but she also refuses to let him take one of the kids out. She’s also nervous about Ianto’s relationship with Jack. Her husband Johnny is quite a bit more homophobic about it. Ianto is humiliated but tries to save face. The moment is interrupted by someone stealing the Torchwood SUV. Ianto is exasperated.
Gwen’s interview with Timothy reveals that he was the child who ran away in 1965. His real name is Clement McDonald, and he’s developed an unusually heightened sense of smell. He’s been smelling the aliens coming back for months, and he also can tell that Gwen is three weeks pregnant.
Surprise! Although, it works out well with Rhys shopping for a house.
Gwen calls Ianto, who has made it back to the Hub, and asks him to search for information about MacDonald, missing children, and Scotland. Unbeknownst to him, Ianto triggers an alarm at an unidentified military monitoring station.
At Home Office, Frobisher orders the blank page, which is code for a kill order. There are four targets on the list: Captain Jack Harkness, retired Colonel Michael Sanders, Ellen Hunt, and Captain Andrew Staines. Lois sees Bridget is distressed, and when she looks at Bridget’s e-mail, she recognizes Jack’s name from the earlier call.
Jack arrives at the hospital and receives word that another man has died. When Jack examines the body, Patanjali shoots him. As Jack dies, a military force arrives as a woman named Johnson waits until Jack revives. Johnson also discovers the link between Clement and Timothy. She sends officers to retrieve him, so he runs.
Patanjali reveals that he was a spy for this group, attempting to infiltrate Torchwood. Jack revives and Johnson kills him again, issuing orders for her men to implant a bomb in his body. Johnson covers her operation by killing Patanjali, stopping him from revealing the truth to Jack.
Jack, meanwhile, revives after the soldiers depart. He returns to the Hub.
At the Hub, Gwen verifies Clement’s claim with a scanner. Jack congratulates her and inadvertently uses the scanner, thus discovering the bomb. He orders Gwen and Ianto to evacuate. He kisses Ianto, watches him rise on the elevator, and promises that he’ll come back. He always does.
The bomb has a blast radius of one mile. The Hub is completely destroyed in a massive explosion that knocks Gwen to the ground.
Meanwhile, the children chant: “We are coming, we are coming, we are coming… back.”
Day One is tense and engaging, leading us into the first season-long arc in the Doctor Who universe since The Trial of a Time Lord. The show picks up the pieces left behind from the previous season and lays down several threads to pursue in the process. We meet Jack’s family and Ianto’s family – two families that we had not previously met – and learn that Gwen and Rhys are expecting a baby.
Torchwood has apparently lost its secrecy, including the general location of Torchwood Three’s headquarters. It’s no wonder since the world has been time and again been exposed to aliens, but perhaps the destruction of the Hub will reset that norm. At this point, half the world knows of or believes in alien life, and the other half is in denial.
Unfortunately, this brings into question the fate of the various beings and relics housed in the Hub, including the Weevils, Gray, and Myfanwy.
We get a nod to Martha Jones, which is a bit meta since she was expected to appear in this set of stories until Law & Order: UK picked up Freema Agyeman. We also meet the fourth Prime Minister in the revival era – Brian Green picks up where Harold Saxon, Harriet Jones, and the unknown politician in Aliens of London left off – which is something that the classic era didn’t play with much.
Finally, after reading Children of Time from kOZMIC Press, I can’t help but think of a penguin when I hear the name Frobisher.
Rating: 5/5 – “Fantastic!”
UP NEXT – Torchwood: Children of Earth – Day Two
