Hellsite Nostalgia Tour 2023 Day 332
Proverbs 17:3/Fugitive of the Judoon
“Proverbs 17:3”
Plot Description: when several campers meet a grisly fate in Colorado, Sam and Dean discover a werewolf presence—and have an unexpected run-in with an old foe
Would I Survive the First Five Minutes??: if the everything about camping didn’t turn me off already, this show has me completely sworn off of it
Omg girl, do not leave that tent wtf
Awwww Sam’s been trying to get in touch with Cas again
Love when they get small opportunities to just be shitty siblings
I hate all these nightmares Sam is having about being Lucifer’s vessel and killing Dean
Aww Dean’s denial of his own aging….is actually super sad considering he’s gonna die fr this season
Dean’s so comforting and genuine rn with this girl who survived the attack. What’s goin on with him? He’s not usually that immediately open with those impacted by monster attacks unless they’re in immediate danger
(You know who I miss? The twin witches.)
Speaking of shitty siblings. These werewolf brothers are terrible (Josh more than Andy but neither are particularly GOOD)
I know this show does obvious parallels within an inch of its life but the scene of Dean talking to the girl about if things would be better or easier if everything was planned out for you was so 🙄
I’ve complained about it before so many times, but the “cut away from the person holding the gun only to find they didn’t shoot who you thought they shot” is way too overdone. It’s no longer a surprise when the Winchesters don’t get shot
Oh no. Andyyyyy you didn’t have to kill yourself, too
Hello??? I knew something was sus about Ashley but I thought it was a more Alex situation
Of all foes to bring back, Lilith? I guess I was just underwhelmed with her last time, so hopefully she gets something good this time around…but I’m not THAT hopeful
Dean’s little apologetic nod at her that she’s not going to seduce him
So, Chuck sent her there to get his gun back?
TWO nightmares in one episode? I guess at least in this one it’s Demon Dean. Mark of Cain Dean
I KNEW that conversation was bad…but it was Chuck’s writing bad
He wanted the gun destroyed? For what??
The weird commentary of Dean asking if they just keep running in Chuck’s maze forever or until they get boring and he ends them IN THE LAST SEASON which is ten seasons AFTER it was initially supposed to end
The “how are we supposed to fight God, Sam?” I was really waiting for Sam to say “together,” but thankfully he didn’t
(How has JPad’s voice only altered slightly in those 15 years and Jensen’s…Jensen doesn’t even sound like the same person)
“Fugitive of the Judoon”
Plot Description: the Doctor and friends race toward 21st century Gloucester—to stand in the way of trigger-happy space police the Judoon. But who or what are the Judoon investigating?
Oh…oh wait, I’d this the Doctor? The future Doctor??
Why does this barista have a dossier on this woman’s boyfriend??
I know the Doctor’s always kept their companions at an arm’s length when it comes to Gallifrey but 13 takes it to a new level. But part of that is my constant complaint about how she doesn’t really bond with them at all individually
I have a few theories for who the Judoon are looking for: boyfriend (unlikely but I’ve seen weirder twists), the woman I’m convinced is the future Doctor, and the Master (because 13 is looking for him)
A platoon of Judoon near the moon…sometimes the dumbest jokes are the funniest
I know he’s an old white man but does Graham really think the police don’t kill??? Please…
I’m still convinced it’s her even though she scans human
This barista needs to back off. You don’t get to write “you can do better” on a cake ordered and paid for by the boyfriend of the woman you’re infatuated with
Oh, he’s not gonna be a problem anymore. Not that it’s right, but he picked a fight with the Judoon and they killed him for it
Aw, Ryan 😣 he tried. Here’s a star, kiddo ⭐️
Making up Earth rules on the spot to enforce against the Judoon
Ok but where IS Graham?? Omg, Captain Jack??? (Though I’ve kind of soured on him since John Barrowman’s comments on not being in the 60th specials, like he was OWED it)
Is the boyfriend like Martha in the family of blood episodes?? He’s gotta keep her safe while her memories are sealed away?
I don’t like that Jack assumed Graham was the Doctor, however I’d like it even less if he’d greeted 13 with that kiss. Also don’t like him saying “this I gotta see!” Upon hearing the Doctor is a woman now
Has he always been this sleazy?? Have I been making excuses for him this whole time??
Tumblr media
Who is SHE?? Ok. Is she the Master from the future?? The way she called boyfriend “faithful companion”
The instinct future Doctor has in close combat is kinda hot
Boyfriend wasn’t boyfriend, he was husband (before the other woman killed him)
“Beware the long (?) Cybermen”?? Or was it lone? Oh we’re trying for an overarching plot
Of all the lighthouses one could live and grow up in, this one’s probably the best and most cozy
THERE IT ISSSS!! She’s got her memories back
Oooooo!! I like her TARDIS interior
Ooo!! And these glasses are fantastic
Why must the girls fight?? And being so petty about it.
So, the future Doctor (or au Doctor maybe??) had a job and the woman who killed her companion was her boss, and this is just messy
Why are we doing a best of tour here too?? I just realized

The whole night before the wedding and all throughout the ceremony, Dean prays to Cas. Little thoughts channeled through prayer over and over again because he just can’t stop himself because he’s so freaking in love that it aches in his chest. ‘I love you.’ ‘I can’t wait to marry you.’ ‘You’re going to be my husband tomorrow.’ ‘Wish I could see you right now.’ ‘Castiel Winchester, God that sounds good.’ ‘Cas... you look absolutely breathtaking.’ ‘If I have to wait another 10 minutes before I can kiss you I’m going to lose my mind.’ ‘How did I get so lucky?’ ‘You really are so devastatingly handsome right now.’ ‘I can’t keep my eyes off of you.’ ‘I love you. So goddamn much.’ And as they’re reciting their vows, Dean keeps adding little extra pieces, said only through prayer so that Cas can hear; vows meant only for Cas. And Cas is crying, reaching out to touch Dean’s cheek, and he knows Cas is hearing everything he isn’t saying out loud. As they finally kiss, finally pronounced husband and husband, Cas murmurs, “I heard all your prayers. I love you, Dean.”

Top 10 SPN fanfic favs of 2021:
My top 10 2021 SPN fanfic recs (all but honorable mention updated/finished in 2021). Not pairing specific, but weighted toward Destiel.
Pater by TaraxacumWine
Summary: Dean hasn't seen his father in ten years. And now, he and his partner Castiel have been invited to spend Christmas with John and his new family.
The invitation stirs up feelings and memories for both Castiel and Dean, of the good times, and the bad. A lot can change in ten years - and a lot can stay the same.
How did we end up here?
Commentary: Established Destiel. WIP. It’s been stuck at 9/10 chapters for the past six months, so I don’t know if it will ever be finished, but this is one of the most captivating “normal people” AUs I’ve ever read. Perfectly encapsulates our beloved SPN characters and their many traumas in a world without monsters.
the remembered earth by a_good_soldier
Summary: 25 years later, Dean returns to Riverton, Wyoming.
Commentary: this is about a lot of things – personal and generational trauma among them. Sometimes all we can do is just bear witness. Startling and lovely and painful. Established Destiel, but that isn’t the focus.
if it all fell to pieces tomorrow by spocklee
Summary: After the Empty, Cas has to spend some time alone. Orpheus tries to convince Eurydice over the phone that it’s okay to turn around now.
Commentary: For once it’s Cas that leaves Dean waiting, instead of the other way around. Gutting angst and a beautiful ending. Destiel finale fix-it.
 Half Empty by sinnabonka
Summary: Raging storm, boundless cornfield surging, churning, like an angry ocean crashing its waves over steep shores. Dean comes to in the passenger seat of his car with no memory of what could have possibly brought him to the oddly named bar on the outskirts of the small town in the middle of nowhere.
Investigating what first looks like a regular, run-of-the-mill missing people case and trying to bring back memories he’s lost, Dean ends up discovering truth he’d rather remain hidden.
Welcome to Half Empty, where nothing is as it seems, and even shadows have secrets of their own.
Commentary: a painful and beautiful exploration of grief. Atmospheric and eerie. Technically Destiel but it takes a while to get there.
 Strandlines by aeli_kindara
Summary: It’s September 18, 2008. Castiel is being deployed to rescue Dean Winchester from Hell.
He lands in Dean Winchester’s motel room in 2003. Things go from there.
Commentary: 2021 seemed like the year for Destiel time-travel fics, but Strandlines was my favorite, with heartfelt metaphor and a very clever canon-bending plot.
 Plain Language by thalius
Summary: Charlie sets her beer down hard on the counter, making him flinch. “Are you trying to invent a problem?” she asks incredulously.
“What? No, dude, I’m telling you—”
“Your boyfriend turned down sex twice, once because you were concussed and your arm was broken, and once because he was about to drive out of state to help your brother,” Charlie summarises, brutal and unrelenting. “And you think that, what? You can never ask him for sex again because of that?”
Dean’s been playing catch-up his entire life, and he’s still figuring out the whole “asking for what I want” thing.
Commentary: Angst? Whump? Schmoop? Charlie??? What more can my little Destiel-heart crave?
the cheapest room in the house by biggaybenny
Summary: what if instead of a very sincere and earnest love confession dean just found out cas was gay? no confession, no god-jack endgame. just post-s15 stupidity. just dean being deranged.
the dean downloads grindr for cas fic
Commentary: WIP (7/8 chapters, fairly consistent updates). It seems like this is THEE Destiel fic nowadays, and for good reason. Not only a beautiful exploration of a complicated relationship, but also a gut-wrenching depiction of Dean’s internal monologue and a haunting narrative about learning to let yourself love.
Like They All Do by kalliel
Summary: When that cult thing down in Arizona goes bad, it goes real bad. What Dean wants now, showing up at Swayze's bar like a body from a grave--well. That's anyone's guess.
15x07 "Last Call" tag
Commentary: No pairing one-shot. Wait 'til you get to the end, kids, it's a line worth the read.
 Pillow Talk by HaganeNoMorals
Summary: Crowley gets personal. Just a quiet evening vignette from the infamous summer of love.
Commentary: Just some short and (bitter)sweet Deanmon Drowley angst in which Dean is even more of a dick than Crowley is.
Mary Winchester, Working On It by alittleduck (amidsizedfrog), amidsizedfrog
Summary: "I thought, I dunno, that you might be,” Dean paused.
“A lesbian?” Sam suggested at the same time Mary said, “a sodomite?”
“Actually,” Jack piped up into the complete silence that followed Mary’s words, “sodomy refers to both oral and anal sex. Even though it’s used as an outdated term for homosexuality, it doesn’t actually mean homosexual. I learned that from Google,” he told them all proudly.
“Very good, son,” Cas said in a dazed voice.
Or, Dean comes out to Mary. But not without a few major misunderstandings along the way.
Commentary: Very funny and charming one-shot. We all deserve some laughs after the year we’ve had.
 Honorable mention:
Personal Space: The Final Frontier by oldmaker
Summary: "Captain's Log, Stardate 10918.8. Captain Ellen Harvelle reporting, First Officer… Castiel… attending. After a month of bargaining with the Gehennian government, efforts to permit a search party within the Rack facilities still proved unsuccessful. Although Starfleet’s orders dictated we tuck tail and leave, I elected to disregard this decision and beam a rescue operations team down for the recovery of Lieutenant Commander Dean Winchester.
The life of Commander Rufus Turner was lost in the efforts, but the hostage was recovered, severely injured but alive. Although I have not escaped unscathed for disobeying a direct order, Starfleet has redirected their attention to understanding the circumstances surrounding Winchester’s imprisonment and rescue..."
In the middle of a milk run mission to retrieve powerful artifacts before they can fall into the hands of galactic terrorists, things go, as always, horribly wrong — and Dean and Castiel are mortified to discover their bond, if they even have one, is all that stands between the galaxy and its annihilation.
Something is rotten in the state of Starfleet.
Commentary: Star Trek Destiel AU. WIP with its 8/? chapters updated last on 12/30/2020, so I don’t know if this one will ever be completed, but its an exceedingly excellent AU. A crossover not in terms of borrowing Star Trek character, but in transplanting the SPN characters into TOS.

Destiel: The Conclusion
This is the end of my massive review of the Supernatural Finale. The entire thing is nine pages long and this is just a snippet. I’m going to attempt to condense it for my reviews blog but for now, please enjoy this commentary on the “bury your gays” thematic elements of Dean’s storyline in Heaven.
This is where fan outrage becomes the hottest and begins to negate the validity in the eyes of the actors, writers, producers, and network. Because Destiel as a ship had been joked about, teased, hinted, removed in deleted scenes, and heavily implied since the day the writers kept Misha Collins on as a character instead of killing Castiel like they were supposed to because he simply was too interesting to the viewers to let go of.
And then Castiel said he loved Dean and immediately died. “Bury your gays!” the naysayers cried. “It’s homophobic!”
It’s definitely...something. And I wanted to give the show the benefit of the doubt because this show kills it’s main characters and revives them like it’s nothing. Certainly Castiel had his own fair share of deaths that never stuck. I wanted to reserve judgement until I knew if Castiel lived or not.
But a throwaway line in the finale was not enough. No sign of Misha Collins the finale was not enough. Dean’s smile in the finale was not enough.
This romance had moved from subtext to text and there was no mention of it ever again. There was barely any mention of Castiel the character from that point forward. Yes, they had to go defeat God, but you’d think getting back your best friend and possible love interest would be in the forefront of your mind once you’ve thrown off destiny and truly found free will.
And this is where it really gets wibbly. Dean deserved a happy ending, he’d been building to it for at least the last three seasons if not longer. But what exactly would Dean’s happy ending look like? Well, he said it himself to John. He had a family with his angel, his baby brother, and Lucifer’s half angel kid. He had a permanent home (the Men of Letters Bunker) and a supporting network of friends and family (see: Wayward Sisters). If Sam had Eileen, then Dean had Cas.
But that’s a little too queer for the show that built Dean as the “red blooded All-American Boy”. So Dean was silenced. He never responded to Castiel’s confession. He never sees Castiel on screen again. Kudos to Jensen Ackles for even giving us that tiny smile with heart eyes because Bobby immediately breezes past the mention to ask what Dean is going to do and this is Dean’s montage:
He drives.
He drives for all the years that Sam lives on earth as his wants and desires are relegated to the metaphorical backseat and he waits for his baby brother. Because Dean’s life has always revolved around Sam (not in a healthy way) so it’s only unfairly written that his afterlife would revolve around Sam as well.
Where did the show go that said that Dean as his own person mattered? That Sam was more than his brother’s tag along? That Castiel was the most important Angel who defied Heaven and God himself for Dean Winchester?
And this is why the fans cry “You buried the gays” and “They Silenced Them”. One of the most important narratives is never addressed (Dean and Castiel) and Sam’s life is reverted to a caricature of happiness. Eileen, once silenced in death, is silenced by obscurity and never being seen or mentioned again. Charlie, Jody, Donna, Claire and Kaia are silenced in their unrecognition, minus a single name drop over a phone call.
Even the characters that would have been in heaven make no appearance -- Ellen, Jo, Ash, Charlie the First, Kevin, Mary, John, and the countless others that belong to the long running television show. While the writers cry Covid, the fact remains that no one is mentioned outside of the building being called Harvelle’s Roadhouse.
I want to reiterate that if this was all Covid’s fault, then they should have waited.
But it seems that sacrifices were made to either push forward their new show Walker with Jared Padalecki (who was the focus of the finale as Sam), or someone decided that a lackluster plot confused episode reducing Dean to Daddy’s Little Soldier and Sam to Dean’s Codependent Little Brother was a good ending to the show that preached “Family Don’t End in Blood” and the importance of Free Will.
To quote my favorite lyricist of the 21st Century Lin-Manuel Miranda -- “Dying is easy young man, living is harder.” Satisfying story telling revolves around fulfilment, and while the show Supernatural took its cues from Kansas’ Carry On My Wayward Son, true peace is in the living, the doing, and the becoming. What a terrible message to end a fifteen year long show that strived to be a symbol of hope beyond the darkness of the world -- that peace is only possible in death and heroes journeys mean nothing in the end.

Meta Monsters
I love NOTHING MORE than when this show decides to run commentary on itself and its fandom. I love it so much that I didn’t liveblog the show and am just going to kind of hum contentedly while I do housework and think of this.
However, it’s worth noting that this episode:
Critiqued the episode (quite fairly) from within the episode, which is one of my favorite tropes of all time. (I always think of the moment in The Sixth Sense where Cole is the hospital telling Dr. Crow that his story isn’t good enough and he needs to add some twists and turns to it to make it better...exactly at the halfway point of the film. GREAT STUFF!!)
Rehabilitated Becky (which, THANK GOD b/c the episode where she kidnaps Sam is just terrible and I never stopped being hurt/offended that the choice between fangirls was Becky or Marie when most of us lead pretty full lives with a lot of other good things in them).
Made the ending that all of us fear, the one with the gravestone that says “Winchester,” into one to be avoided at all costs. That is now literally the dilemma of the rest of the season: will Chuck’s Big Bad Ending come to pass or will the Winchesters be saved? This is great for those of us who don’t want Chuck’s ending.
Did more to develop Chuck into the Big Bad, basically guaranteeing that the miserable fucking ending that he wrote won’t be the real ending of the show even though he’s out here scaring us (Becky) with the prospect of something so painful and unfair.
Established that Chuck CAN do anything he wants (erasing the fans and their spot-on complaints from existence), which means that to avoid the nightmare ending he will have to Learn A Lesson and Change His Mind, which is really much better as a plot arc and piece of character development. (I bet you we’ll see Becky again.)
Showed Dean so deep in denial that he left big gaps where Cas’s name should be at least twice, both times right after mentioning the others--Jack, Mary, Rowena--making him The Big Empty again. In S13 Dean wasn’t mentioning Cas because he was too full of grief. Well...same.
Established that Dean returning to and trying to recapture the Great Winchester Brothers Road Trip where they alone save people and hunt things (just like in the good ole days before...WELL YOU KNOW feelings and shit) is not going to work--not for Sam and not, even if he doesn’t admit it, for Dean. Too much has changed.
Neatly segued into showing that this desire has changed for the fandom too. Even freaking BECKY doesn’t want that, and she used to write Wincest fanfic (before she realized it was massively unhealthy). The promo for next time is giving us another Winchester Classic, complete with their IDs from the second episode and jokes about how little they’ve changed (thank you, Jensen). Know that we are going to see how insufficient it is now. Maybe we will KEEP seeing that until Sam cracks or Cas comes back or something. But Denial Dean is here to stay, trying to recapture his pre-Cas self, until something forces his hand.
SPN writers, I love you and your layered commentary on narrative, canon, character, and fandom.

15, 18, and 27 ('visited upon the children' for 27)
15. A Hollywood producer tells you that they want to film just one of your fics. Which fic would you want it to be?
Already answered!
18. What is a line/scene you’re really proud of? Give us the DVD commentary for that scene.
It’s long, and from my temporarily abandoned megafic, but I do really like how it turned out. And Cas contemplating faith and parenthood is something I wish we’d seen more of, so:
He looked at the stars, up at the place he assumed contained his father somewhere in all its vastness. Amara too, he supposed. And he was struck by the fact that when he thought of God these days, there was nothing there. The well of his faith had run dry long ago, so it felt strange to believe in anything, now, after so much time with his only hopes being in two humans who were better than he could ever hope to be.
He missed it. He missed believing that there was a greater purpose and that there was a reason for all the pain and loneliness he endured each day, but… there wasn’t. The story was never meant to go on this far, and God didn’t care. He didn’t listen, just popped in when his sister was about to break his favorite toy.
Faith in a child was something Castiel had never considered. God certainly didn’t have faith in his children, least of all the angels. Why else would he have sculpted them to be automatons, simply carrying out orders?
Sam and Dean didn’t have children for Cas to observe them interacting with, and he’d heard precious little about their father. Mary was struggling with her resurrection, and the faith she had in her sons was understandably still interwoven with the dull shock of time displacement. Rowena and Crowley… well. They were a poor example, riddled with complexity as they were.
Jimmy. Jimmy believed in Claire so much, loved her like… like she was more precious than the sun. Cas thought perhaps faith and love came hand in hand, sometimes dangerously so. But Jimmy’s capacity for it was endlessly bountiful. And beautiful.
The way Kelly believed in her baby was, of course, a very different situation. Or maybe it was the same, just taking shape in a different way. He wondered if Kelly’s parents had the same faith from the other side of the phone, or it was an isolated phenomenon, found only in the most special of souls. Somehow he had a feeling it was far more universal than that.
The most shocking thing was how much Cas himself believed in the child. But this new faith, though it shone bright as the stars, could not put more water into that old dry well. And it was so totally different, because this time Castiel couldn’t rely on order and instruction, not that he’d ever been very good at keeping to them. He’d have to be a guide to a fragile and volatile new life, and he doubted he was prepared for it.
27. If you were ever to do a sequel to [x fic], what do you think might happen in it?
ooo a sequel to visited upon the children?? I hadn’t considered one before but it would probably be a Cas&Jimmy conversation with Jack awkwardly in the middle until he leaves to give them some space to talk. And that’s when things get REALLY angsty.

Alright, while I reblogged shit about the SPN Finale and knew a little of what I was in for, I didn't fucking anticipate exactly how fucking bad it was now that I've seen it.
Yeah, fuck that finale and fuck the writers and the directors for fucking the show up so fucking bad. If not them, then the fucking CW for them pulling their bullshit yet a-fucking again. I don't even blame the actors cause at the end of the day, the actors can't change that much of how the show is going to be. Sometimes a actor or a group of actors stomp their foot on the ground and say "No fuck this and fuck you" and I love that, but it's a very rare thing to happen and if so, often doesn't change much about the show and the direction it's going, just the specific characters. Because ultimately the writers and directors control what happens, or the studio itself kills what creative freedom they have.
I grew up on this show. I started watching it when I was 10 because my dad watching the Evil Santa episode of season 3 and thought, "My kids are gonna fucking love this." And then we all became obsessed with the show, but me especially. Whenever a season would come out on dvd (too poor to afford cable so I missed out on a lot of what was typical of other childhoods), we would buy it as soon as we could afford it and I would obsessively watch it, the commentaries, and all of the special features. Not only that, but I would take notes of every monster and legend and go through mythology books I saved up and bought, and compare and see how accurate it was to actual lore(surprisingly seasons 1-5 is far more accurate to the legends than season 6 onward(I really hate the Changeling episode in particular for how inaccurate it is)), and essentially it became my special interest. Unfortunately, cause Gresham is fucking terrible, everyone decided to spread rumors about me and make my life hell. I've heard every single cussword and insult, but the most common was: demon, whore, witch, and r*tard(I'm Autistic).
Then more tragedies occured in my life. I don't want to be too specific as its personal, and the list of shit that happened in 2010 is way too fucking long (huh it was like my personal mini 2020...) but I'll summarize it: parents split, people died, and the worst kind of real life monster was accepted back into the family. And since then I've just been this numb, empty thing that would randomly explode then go back to feeling nothing. That fucking show honestly made me so happy to watch and kept me barely steady until I was 15, made my first and most important friends, and finally got a support system that would slowly but surely inspired me to heal.
Overall, a lot of my opinions on Supernatural was formed isolated as I never really jumped into the SPN fandom until like 5 or 4 years ago when it all really died down, and didn't really interact with any other fan. But I did read about destial, and I 100% agree that Dean would have ended up with Cas if Cas was instead casted with an actress instead of Misha Collins, and that the way the show continuely handles the Dean Winchester and Castiel friendship and dynamic is 100% queer baiting. (Personally, I think of the relationship as Cas being in love with Dean as a bi-ace, and I always headcanoned Dean as an bi-aromantic/demiaromantic and that if he ever did actually fall in love, it was gonna be Cas(the way Dean acts with his love interests that are women have always struck me as more of a performance. Like Dean certainly cared about Lisa and Anna (I refuse to count Amara), but not loved. It seemed more like he felt a very strong platonic liking to them, and though of it as love and did what he thought was the right response))). Hell, even my dad agrees that if Cas was played by an actress, he would be Dean's love interest.
SPOILER ALERT
I fucking hate how the finale essentially just shat allover the show, and especially fucked over the character Cas at the end by baiting him and Dean being endgame, and then not having him in the finale two episodes and never mentioning his confession. Not to mention the shitty fucking way they seemed to have dropped the ball in the consume department, the fucking laughable inappropriate death for Dean, abandonment of Jack(he could have been there at the fucking funeral at least), the way they don't kill Chuck to make sure there is no fucking way he starts to fuck shit up again, and how they just glossed over the fact that Dean could have visited his parents but chose to drive instead.
Especially when **SPOILER ALERT** Bobby and Dean are drinking beer, and Bobby is explaining how Jack fixed heaven before leaving. Dean praises it, and then Bobby responds with: "And Cas did too."
So Jack did grab Cas and got him out of the Empty? And decided not to go visit Dean? Dean didn't even try looking for him? Cas is in heaven right now? Or is it because of the fact that heaven runs of different time that the drive seemed to last forty years Earth time? Also I thought people look as they did when they died? You mean you can pick out how you want to look for eternity? And no one chose whay they looked like when they were in their 20s? What about the dog? So many questions.
Honestly the urge to completely rewrite the show, especially in a lore accurate way snd fix the shit that I hate is super strong right now.

So casthegrumpy made a post that’s passing around, and it’s A+ but I have some extended commentary that really is worth a new OP
Tumblr media
Okay, you see this? This is absolutely true.
However,
YOU ALREADY HAVE PERMISSION. The writing crew is cautious to not get blown out of the water by fandom tire fires rippling through corporate before the end but have been quietly supportive. BUT YOU ALREADY HAVE PERMISSION. Not just with the content -- queer people don't get special goalposts -- but with the way the crew has addressed the content. *DC WAS RIGHT AFTER FILMING 9*. “(On another network) our characters would be having sex" Collins & "domestic dispute" Ackles
THEY KNOW. THEY ALL BEEN KNEW. They been knew since A WHILE AGO TOO by the marketing of Stands, who is friends with the crew, choosing to do the shirt this year, or Jensen's JiB moment this year. THEY. BEEN. KNEW.
THE ONLY ONES THAT DON'T IS A SECTION OF BITTERS & META FANDOM.  Which I guess, FAIR, their only reason to exist online kind of evaporates if they don't have something to crow about and make people feel they need to stay engaged and subscribed to see, but NOT a good way to run social function. But their digital space is reliant on traffic fed by a mindset and their podium is lost if people fall out of that mindset so they will aggressively dedicate themselves to obfuscating this in the interest of manufactured outrage or made up goalposts.
SOMEWHERE in my vat of tweets I pointed out this exact fustercluck was gonna happen once Buckner said romance would kick in this season which left only Saileen and Destiel as Vortexes after Samwitch got Cast To Hell, and shockingly HERE WE ARE.
So anyway the simple reality of it is Bobo is running postmodern commentary around classic queer story structure for overt, but unexplicit queer storytelling that represents a given demographic that, unfortunately for many, is not what they wanted, really.
I can promise you any middle aged LGBT men that have had time to be in committed engagements for a decade loved their spouses and hugged them a little bit tighter after watching that night. Because unless you're them, that content aint for you tbh.
Like if you can resonate with the content and enjoy it, good, that means it's good content, but actually claiming representation in this intersectional field everybody talks about means not all representation of other demos will look how your demo wants.
No, if the network is being a dick but the whole creative team is fighting for it, it's not magically Not Canon bc they don't kiss. If you do that enjoy deleting decades of LGBT cinema history for the same reasons. We don't get special goalposts. You don’t get to delete our history.
Good Omens is accepted as canon LGBT without any of this, the same beyond-the-wall affirmations, and a fraction of the content. And if it's only because Aziraphale presents as performatively queer that you accept it, we're gonna have some WORDS about nonperformative deletion.
This season has gone out of its way to establish shit within restraints. Sorry, that Deanmon triplets thing? Def wasn't bc he was a demon. Oh but you want to argue circles about how straight it could still be, go watch Oz first and realize the LGBT comm settled this decades ago.
Your debates aren't new, your debates aren't hot, you're turning over ideas decades behind everybody else and trying to plow over historic shifts in the tide in the interest of ship warring and bitterness and that shit needs to stop.
You don’t get to delete LGBT content just because it’s not the content you, personally, wanted, unless you’re actually in the goddamn intersectional demographic. And even then they’re not gonna be the borg. It was something like an 86% support rate last time LGBT males were polled in any substantial sum. 11% will have various scales of nonchalance and like 3% hated it. That’s fair. People are individuals. No, if you find that one middle aged gay man that hates the shit you don’t get to flag it around like a card. Hell if you ARE that one middle aged gay man you better damn well find a sizable intersection of your own demo in this fandom and cross it out and see what you may be missing as an experience in either direction. That’s how this shit is SUPPOSED TO WORK.
@thecoffeebrain-blog recently made a post, “The Dictionary Is A Good Book”, which essentially highlights this fandom’s vat of remapped meanings of things to continue it’s hysterical upset and to quite flagrantly allow homophobia to run rampant in this fandom dressed in an activism suit by extremizing points into “if we don’t get explicit it’s queerbait and you’re a homophobe for implying there may be other steps or history involved here”, even going so far as to wave people away from studying the actual history of the representation and media battle.
And I’ve done the same. Canon. Subtext. Text. This fandom has jockeyed the meanings and goalposts on this all around. I’ve posted for years that there’s a difference between Romantic Canon, and Physically Consummated or Explicit Canon. Canon is just “events in official releases that have happened”, as opposed to say, noncanonical extension novels that are full of plot holes but there for fun reads for teenagers. The books are not canon. The show is canon. Everybody else is fucking this word sideways beyond recognition without attaching any kind of qualifiers, just like the idea of what’s called “subtext” right now in an AV medium has reached the point of hilarity.
Riddle me this, in an AV medium, if Dean and Cas kiss and nobody gets their hands on the script to prove it was written in the script, is that subtext? I mean, it’s not clearly explained as you would to a child, it’s not verbalized, so is that not text, or DOES AV MEDIUM WORK DIFFERENTLY THAN READING OUT OF A BOOK.
Winner winner, chicken dinner.
Be very cautious of anyone trying to maintain you as a follower in their clout sphere that is responsible for this kind of behavior.
When the show ends, I really don’t give a shit who follows me still. I’ll still be here writing hermetic meta, I’ll still be here, crossing into other fandoms. I’ll still be here, casually absorbing remaining content flow for this show. But in the end, I don’t give a shit about your cons, your clout, your WHATEVER.  I care about this damn fantastic story, about the effort being put in for us by our LGBT creators, about our cinematic LGBT history, about my theology being used respectfully and well as a mytharc on a scale I haven’t seen since The Matrix. I care about that. Everything else in this fandom is white noise, but damn if it isn’t infuriating to hear once my ear does happen to tune in to a conversation.

DrSilverfish Meta Masterpost S8
Hellatus historical meta masterpost housekeeping!
I was new to Tumblr in S8 and finding my feet (stylistically as much as anything) as well as live-watching SPN for the first time (usually by shitty overseas live-stream) so, a lot of the early stuff is shippy rambling rather than decent meta.
I was also much more hopeful that the Destiel subtext might be canon fore-shadowing back in “Season Gr8″ (as we dubbed it at the time).
Some of this is worth reading, particularly I’d say, from about No 21) “Dean, Nazis and the Closet” onwards, i.e. from commentary on 8x13 Everybody Hates Hitler to the end of the season.
It’s really interesting looking back. There was a lot of disappointment in the Destiel fandom here on Tumblr after 8x17 and the crypt scene in Goodbye Stranger, where it felt as if an “I love you” from Dean to Castiel was, somehow, missing.  This was later (to a reasonable fact-checked standard) confirmed to have indeed been a removed line (by Jensen, who didn’t think it was right for Dean):
http://fandomdebunker.tumblr.com/post/64507789422/the-rumor-that-jensen-confirmed-the-i-love-you
Looking back, I think he was probably right, but it felt disappointing then, at a time when the queer subtext seemed to be lapping at the shores of breaking waves into main-text.
For Destiel fans, and queer subtext followers, there was, nevertheless, a lot to love about S8: the “purity” of Purgatory and Dean’s search for his angel; Benny’s “thirst” for Dean; Charlie introducing Dean to LARP-ing; Aaron Bass as Dean’s “gay thing”; Naomi forcing Castiel to kill innumerable Dean-clones in Heaven (evidence that Heaven saw Cas’ feelings for Dean as, in particular, transgressive); and another lovely Cas-centric episode from Edlund, The Great Escapist  (8x21), when Cas cleverly hid from the angels by zapping between multiple Biggersons diners, trapping his angelic pursuers in “quantuum superposition” (lol).
From Dean’s hallucinations of Cas, and his self-memory-wipe of the fact Cas deliberately let go of his hand at the portal exit from Purgatory, to their tender exchange about Cas’ suicidal ideation in 8x08 Hunter Heroici, to the romantic subtext of Metatron’s angel-fall spell ingredients (see meta below) S8 was (despite poor Cas’ torture by Heaven and his deep depression) a season of reconciliation for Dean and Cas, after the previous season’s (S7) upheavals: Cas’ apparent lake-death; the long separation; Dean’s rage and grief; Emmanuel’s mind-wipe; Cas’ “mental break” (Cas taking on Sam’s cage-match scars as atonement); and the whole Leviathan fall-out from the Godstiel arc.
S8 remains, despite its disappointments, one of my favourite seasons.

SPN 14.09
*does the called it dance*
There’s a dance party going on, I know a lot of people called it. I am un-shocked, but filled with evil glee. Er...I mean this is very painful and going to be painful and it’s going to be a lot of suffering but this is also a mood
Tumblr media
All right who wants actual character thoughts now that I’m done flailing around screaming.
Is Cas...eating the cookie cereal? He’s eating the cookies. He’s making contented crunching noises. Cas doesn’t need to eat, but he’s eating. I feel like I said something recently about Cas becoming more human, slowly, oh right, it was about him actually being drunk in 14.07 on a few bottles when back in S5, even at low power, he needed an entire liquor store. Now he’s eating cookie crisps cereal. That scene was cute af, btw and ties back to what I’ve been saying about Jack’s increasing emotional IQ. He talked about worrying about his mom because of the threats to Heaven, and then brought up Castiel’s deal, because it worries him.
Oh, yes Sam and Dean can know about the deal but Cas doesn’t want them to so it won’t “burden them.” CASTIEL WINCHESTER YOU ARE NOT A BURDEN. Only no wait, but it is a burden and Cas realizes it and why it is a burden, because THEY CARE ABOUT HIM A LOT AND CAS KNOWS IT AND THAT IS WHY HE DOESN’T *WANT* THEM TO KNOW. As I said in my sneak peek commentary, it’s not anger or being caught out Cas fears. He simply doesn’t want to make them worry, make them sad, or scared, for him. He doesn’t want to be a burden but it’s too late, they all love him.
We’re inching more and more here towards Cas realizing just how much or he wouldn’t very specifically and deliberately be hiding this secret because he knows how much it will worry them and Sam and Dean will scramble to find a way out for him and fix it and it’s almost like Cas hates being the center of attention and worried over. He has to be the strong one, not the one who needs help. This is how Cas keeps going.
Dean and Cas in an actual junk-yard scene (ok technically a recycling facility), I am still not over this and never will be and all the things I already yelled about after the sneak peek was released. Dean and Cas starting far apart with the Impala as negative space between them, but not negative space because that’s one of the show’s biggest symbols of home, then moving closer and closer like magnets until their shoulders are brushing. Screw you Dean and Cas and your acting married body language.
Cas talking to Dean about how happy Dean seems, Cas looking super uncomfortable about not!telling Dean about the deal. I already posted about this but let me recap now that I’ve seen the whole ep--the “win” thing went right over Cas’s head because he doesn’t know, but the audience does. But Cas is mainly all about not!telling Dean about the deal and wow all my pre-game meta on this about Cas not wanting them to worry and that’s why he’s secretive got vocalized in the cereal eating scene in the kitchen. So. There you go.
Dean talking to Cas about what Sam and Cas went through when they were possessed in relation to his own experience, thank you Robert Berens for openly vocalizing, finally, Sam and Dean and Cas’s shared trauma, I have been waiting 84 years.
(Pausing to scream about the January promo which shows Sam and Cas going together into Dean’s mind. I LOVE SEASON 14).
Which btw now that I’ve brought that ep, Cas’s worry about Sam touchstoned several times in this ep gives me feelings. Dean and Cas were both worried about him...and then Sam and Cas are going to team to save Dean.
TFW and TFW 2.0 are both running concurrently strong in this season. There’s the interplay Sam, Dean, and Cas have, with its long seasons of history, and there’s the Sam-Dean-Cas-Jack, which is newer territory but slowly getting its hooks into my heart. They’re all valid, with their various relationships therein.
Garth, awww. Admittedly I was not warm on this character when he first showed up upteen seasons ago but he’s turned out to be a really great part of the SPN world and a good friend and thank goodness SPN didn’t kill him.
Sam and Garth friendship *draws hearts*.
Garth saying he’s doing this for his little girl is interesting,  it’s him talking as part of his cover, but has a double meaning because it’s also 100% true he’s just lying about which side he’s really on. He is going dangerously undercover to help stop Michael, thinking of his child’s future, to protect the world. While we had Cas just last week sacrificing himself to save his son. Which echoed back to Jimmy Novak sacrificing himself for his daughter.
I like Sam and Jack working together, with Jack having taught himself lock-picking on the internet. For a moment I thought Jack was going to say Dean taught him and I was a little sorry it wasn’t that, but interesting Jack said “I like to keep myself useful”--that’s the Cas part of him talking. He is still trying to prove himself without his powers. Skipping ahead here as relevant--back to Jack’s slowly increasing emotional IQ and his character development. Because I was wondering if things would get to that, with Jack on strong enough footing to start looking after his dads, and it’s starting. He talks to Cas about the deal. Then when hyper-charged Garth knocks down Sam, Jack tackles him to save Sam. Which was stupid and brave, nobody hurts moose dad when Jack is around. Having been saved, and sacrificed for, Jack’s now moving more into a position of being part of the team, looking after others.
And not, note, taking on a parent role, but he is looking after his dads as they look after him. I am really curious in fact how Jack is going to talk about possessed Dean now. The arc about Jack’s knee jerk comment about Michael Dean early in the season has been addressed and resolved before this ep, and they’ve bonded a lot closer since...so I’d really like to see how Jack is going to deal with it.
I’m completely distracted by Dean and Cas inside the recycling facility looking for Dark Kaia and the spear, all of it, the way Dean and Cas move together, work together out in the field, which we don’t get to see enough of, I am transfixed. They have this silent rapport we’ve seen all the way back to late S7 at least and the BAMF power couple vibe going on, what with Dean’s strength as a hunter and Cas’s powers and warrior attitude and I’m just going to sit here and scream quietly to myself about that whole sequence for a minute.
And then they’re BICKERING oh my god so married shut up, until oops Kaia sticks the spear against Dean’s back and Cas just says “Dean” as a warning and he goes so incredibly still holy shit--with the point of that spear threatening Dean. Cas wants to surge forward and Dean waves him down. *yells a lot about Dean and Cas and their thing* Cas is so very protective of Dean here it’s doing things to me.
Dark Kaia’s little face is tugging at my heart. Who is it she’s protecting? Yes, why is she there, I need answers, I need to know what’s the link with her and Kaia. I need more of this please. S14 being what it is I think I’ll get it, just not right now.
The TFW 2.0 power walk set to Ode to Joy. I FEEL SO CALLED OUT RIGHT NOW.
Badass Dean having the moves with that spear, after being a goofball with it in the garage...I think there really isn’t a weapon Dean can’t use, pick up quickly how to use, plus he’s used similar weapons and adrenaline, he instinctively could use the spear. He’s not as good as Kaia, and guess what people, it is 150% okay he’s not as good as Kaia with that spear, he’s not supposed to be. Kaia has thousands of hours with that spear and Dean doesn’t, but look how good Dean is instinctually.
Ouch my Dean feelings. Well I’ve been saying and saying the Michael Dean story wasn’t over and here we are and like many people ran with the sleeper agent/back door hack theory and here we are. The snap. Good god damn Jensen is excellent. And TFW 2.0 looks as ragged and stunned as the last Avengers standing.
So Michael has access to all of Dean’s memories. And Dean just “wouldn’t stop squirming.” Because of his ties to his family.
To you...to all of you.
For me and Jack, and family.
You’re going to bring him back...you’re going to bring ‘em all back.
I love you...I love all of you.
And you really can’t dismiss Destiel here while saying w*ncest is valid, because then you’d have to say the Destiel is valid. But the fact of the matter is these are different kinds of relationships, in canon. It makes sense that Sam got a more singular shout-out but then Michael adds the “all of you.” Sam is the most constant figure in Dean’s life and he is closest to Sam on a lot of levels. There’s bound to be a lot of Sam in Dean’s brain. But it’s not just about Sam.
This is something SPN keeps underscoring in triple day-glo yellow highlighter. Nor does it fit to claim that because of this scene, therefor it proves Sam is the only most important one because in other storylines, Cas has also been demarcated out as different/unique in how Dean feels about him. BTW, seeing a romantic reading for Destiel doesn’t mean having to then say oh w*ncest is then therefore canon, because it’s just not, and those relationships are written completely differently. The canon undercurrents are completely different. Sam and Dean’s bond is what it is, and it’s strong, it is platonic and intended as platonic, while Destiel is...ambiguous in intent, in canon. For non-shippers, say the relationships are brothers, and like-brothers, and leave it there. It really is more complicated than that on the Destiel front, but I talk about that plenty in other posts, right now, I’m really thinking uppermost about Dean and his family. Sam isn’t the only one tethering Dean and keeping him fighting inside Michael. That was for all of them. So this was a bro bond shout-out that landed at TFW 2.0.
And look what’s in the promo...Sam and Cas going together into Dean’s mind to try to save him. Dean’s closest to Sam, Cas is close to Dean in other ways. They both have a bond with Dean that is unique and strong and I’m just going to have to go sob in the corner that SPN is really going to do that and have them go in together and poke around in Dean’s mind to pull him out of this. Using the same method Dean used to go into Mary’s mind. *small keening noise*
Also I refuse to accept Dean is really as down and out in there as Michael claims. But maybe he’s buried himself deep in some sort of happy mental spaces. Which is something I was thinking about before the season started, and then they didn’t show us and I let it go but maybe it’s going there after all.

Thoughts about Spn 14x04
BEWARE! SPOILERS AHEAD!
A bit later than usual, but here we go. I liked the episode a lot, mostly because of the giant meta commentary it was and all the little nods to geek culture. And of course Dean being a giant nerd as well, seeing him more or less happy. One might even say he appears to be in… mint condition ;)
But before I torture you with more terrible puns, let’s have a closer look.
Wonder Twins
This episode worked a lot with mirrors and they aren’t subtle about it. Both Sam and Dean even directly address who they think is the mirror to their brother. So we have Sam and Sam, and Dean and Dirk, but as there is a third friend involved this would make Stuart a mirror for Cas. Except that Stuart is a dick and Cas is not. So I think this mirror works rather in the way we see both Sam and Dirk’s relationship with Stuart. They are both very protective of him, defend him, and care deeply about him, even though others might not see what they see in Stuart. Cas of course can be at times a bit “rusty” at his people skills, and appears to be offensive, though it is because well… he is a different species. It is also obvious that Dirk is a bit closer to Stuart, as he stays with him in the hospital, wanting to be there when Stuart wakes up. Dirk describes Stuart as his best friend, that they hang out and eat pizzas while they watch movies, and Dirk regularly fights with his dad. It is Cas and Dean all over. Sam and Sam share… well, their name, their hairstyle, their love for flannel, and are secret science nerds.
Art imitates life, life imitates art
As I wrote before this episode is like one big meta commentary. The episode centers around the Hatchet Man movie series. Both Dean and Dirk are big fans, discussing their favourite movies. What is interesting is that they both name sequels as their favourite movie of the series. Neither mentions the first movie, or says that with each sequel the series got worse, the way a lot of movie series are criticized. I think this might be a meta commentary on Supernatural itself, which by now is in a way a sequel. If we take each showrunner’s run or even each season as an individual movie, Supernatural by now  has produced respective 4 or 14 movies. And we have all seen those kind of comments where people complain that Supernatural should have ended after its fifth season (and the first showrunner), that it keeps getting worse with every season, even though a lot of these people haven’t seen the show in years. But sequels don’t have to be bad all the time; their emotional payoff is different because you have been invested in these characters for years, because you have seen them changed, because Supernatural has by now become its own cosmos, that can easily tell stories build on their own history.
Then Dirk and Dean reenact their favourite movie in striking detail, even though they called out movie logic before. But the hospital is really that empty by night, Dirk does act stupid and leaves the salt circle, because horror movies depend on people acting stupid, the security guards are complete oblivious to what is going etc.  Dean of course would know that horror movies are often way more realistic than people think, because he is living in one. And that brings me to yet another thing: Dean’s love for horror movies and Sam’s dislike for them. And both are grounded in the same thing: that their life is like a horror movie. Sam doesn’t need the fictional version of it, it hits too close to home. Dean however likes them, because unlike his own life, these movies follow a script and the good guys will always win in the end. There is a certain kind of control in them, because Dean knows how genre works, how tropes work, that everything will be fine in the end. The irony of course is that Supernatural follows the same script, that it doesn’t matter if the Winchesters die again, because we know they will come back (just like Hatchet man keeps coming back from the dead). Every story follows a certain set by rules (even when they break those rules), and we all at times wish our own lives would be more like a movie, because at least then we would know what is going to happen next.
This is also only the third episode ever that takes place on Halloween, after 1x01 and 4x07 (as someone who both loves Halloween and Halloween themed episode I am appalled). And similar to their respective love and dislike for horror movies, we have Dean who likes Halloween and Sam who doesn’t. We later get the reason for that from Sam, and for this show’s standard it is strangely un-tragic. However I never wondered why Sam doesn’t like Halloween, I always thought it was because his mother died two days later (also, according to the trailer we saw Hatchet man died on October 31st 1983, so two days before the real Mary died). So it is possible Sam only made the story up to get Dean to shut up. Also, among all the matching Halloween costumes Dean mentions two represent gay couples: Ernie and Bert & Thelma and Louise. Both have also been mentioned in 5x03 towards Cas (who didn’t catch the clue because he would be immune to popcultural references back then). But the moment he mentions them to Sam all we get is a “that’s weird”. Because it is. Please don’t confuse your brother with your boyfriend, Dean.
Some other things:
I love the trope of a villain being unrecognized because everyone thinks they wear a Halloween costume.
Overall Dean seemed very happy and very in his element this episode. We wore bright colours, a short-sleeved shirt, even glasses. He didn’t hide his love for all the geeky things in the comic book shop. He wore novelty socks. He switched the mugs to get the Flash mug. I love seeing Dean like this.
“Got to love the Internet, where everyone can be a dick.” – I think this one is self-explanatory.
Until next week <3

3x02: The Kids Are Alright
Then:
Tumblr media
Dean’s going to hell, guys!
Now:
In Cicero, Indiana, a divorced suburban mom anxiously waits the return of her daughter. It’s the girl’s night to spend with her dad, but upon her return she pleads with her mom to never go back. It’s scary and there are monsters there. Meanwhile, the dad is busy working in his shop --making a wooden toy that’s about 5 years too late if it’s for his daughter that hates him. It’s late so he calls it a night, but as he walks away, the table saw spins to life.
Tumblr media
He switches it off and walks away again --only for it to turn on again. As he goes to investigate again, something attacks him from behind, pushing him onto the blade. Blood gushes everywhere! And the camera pans to the little wooden horse, rocking slowly back and forth.
Meanwhile, Sam is 1000% unable to play it cool when talking to Bobby about Dean’s demon deal, flubbing about ordering pizza at a diner. Good save, Sammy! Dean’s caught a case and a serious desire to relive the bendiest weekend of his life. He’s in YOLO mode and wants to see Lisa Braeden again. Dean’s in high spirits as he drops Sam off at the motel, telling him, “Don’t wait up for me.”
Dean pulls into a new suburban neighborhood, and locates Lisa’s house. She’s a bit surprised to see him. It’s been almost 9 years since that weekend after all. “Dean Winchester. Wow.” Haha, so say we all. She’s a bit busy at the moment. She’s throwing a birthday party for her son, Ben, who’s turning 8. He also has close cropped spiky hair, loves hard rock, cars, and food. Dean looks on with consternation while Lisa greets her friend, the woman from the cold open. Dean mingles with the locals.
Tumblr media
And some quality time with his mini-me.
Tumblr media
Dean does some quick math in his head (I LOVE when Dean visibly counts to himself. It’s something so endearing and consistent about Dean over the years.)
Lisa is consoling her friend about her ex-husband’s untimely demise. Her friend confesses that she feels there’s something wrong with Katie, her daughter. In fact, she’s not sure it’s actually her daughter. She goes to collect Katie to leave the party.
Dean walks in and ever so casually asks Lisa if Ben is his. (Natasha: dies laughing) Lisa dismisses his concerns, but it’s clear Dean’s still a little nervous. But even under possible parental distress, Dean’s able to work the case and ask Lisa about the death of her friend’s ex. Lisa admits to a lot of bad things in the neighborhood.
Sam, meanwhile, gets a visit from Ruby. Cue dramatic zoom. Sam wants to know more about her knife that can kill demons (those innocent days! I don’t even think he knows she’s a demon here!) Ruby wants to talk about Sam’s ESP -- and his mom’s friends (what?? My mind is fuzzy about this.) As she’s leaving, she tells Sam there’s a case in this town.
Two seconds later, Dean calls and tells Sam there’s a case in this town --four other people have died in Lisa’s neighborhood.
Meanwhile, Lisa’s friend wakes from a nap (after falling asleep reading The Historian. Lol, I completely understand Friend of Lisa, but Show, a book about bloodsuckers is a little too on the nose.) Her daughter is watching her like a little creepoid.
Tumblr media
The girl is creepy and clingy and has some seriously messed up skin when the mom sees her reflection in the mirror.
Sam investigates the other homes where people died.
I submit this photograph for Insurance purposes only:
Tumblr media
As the woman points out where her husband fell and died, Sam notices blood on the windowsill, and a blank staring little girl looking out the window --and a sucker-like hickey on the back of the mom’s neck.
Friend of Lisa’s is rubbing her own neck when she’s making Katie her lunch. She tells her daughter to eat and then locks herself in the bathroom to inspect her own sucker hickey. Eww. There’s a pounding on the door. She wants in. She continues to rattle the door while Friend of Lisa’s grows increasingly worried. The rattling stops when the doorbell rings. She rushes downstairs to find Katie answering the door to the neighborhood sunshine representative, bearing a basket of goodies. The woman inquires how they’re doing, and then about if they’re planning on keeping the house. Cold, lady. Friend of Lisa’s slams the door in her face, only to find Katie right there demanding ice cream.
Out and about, Dean sees a sad Ben, sitting alone. He joins Ben on the bench and asks if there’s something wrong. Ben’s as chatty as his not-father when it comes to emotions. Some kid borrowed Ben’s game and now he won’t give it back. Ben refuses to let Dean meddle. Dean’s proud of the little guy for wanting to fight his own fights. (I hold back my commentary about toxic masculinity being passed down to the next generation. My, how far we’ve come, Dean Let-It-Go Winchester.)
Ben heads up to the group of bullies and calls out the kid who stole his game. Ben knees him in the balls and grabs his game while Dean grins from the sidelines. Lisa storms up and berates Ben for kicking another kid. Dean gets the Mom Look of Death ™.
Tumblr media
Lisa (RIGHTLY SO) reminds Dean that they spent a single night together years ago and it is hella creepy for Dean to be hanging out with her son right now. Like, I KNOW RIGHT? (Team Lisa) Lisa and Ben head out, only for Ben to run back to Dean and give him a big thank you hug. It’s super adorable.
And then...the adorableness dies swiftly as creepy children in the playground turn in unison to stare at Dean.
And back with Friend of Lisa, her daughter is aggressively telling her that she loves her while mom, weeping, buckles her into the car. Mom adjusts the rearview and catches a glimpse of...well…
Tumblr media
Drive, momma, drive! The little girl is still JONESING for ice cream so mom drives them to a nice refreshing...boat ramp. She puts the car in neutral, releases the parking brake, and the car and child slide slowly into the water. (I find this scene particularly horrifying because of its layer of real life parallels so GOOD JOB writers for making me feel awful.)
Mom gets home, emotionally ravaged, only to find a water soaked little girl sitting at her table. “Hi mummy,” the girl says. “Can I have that ice cream now?” Fuuuuuuuck.
Sam, meanwhile, is diligently doing research when Dean bursts into the hotel room. (Side note: there’s been so little Sam in this episode that I was actually surprised to see him again. In my defense, I’m tired. In my defense, I’m also distracted by creepy kids.) Sam’s function is clearly to dump a ton of lore on us. We learn that changelings aren’t just babies. They can be kids - and there’s one at every house that’s had a death. They climb in through the windows and steal the real children, then feed on the back of the mothers’ necks for a few weeks. (Query: it’s heavily implied that changelings only feed on women. Does this mean that the children of gay male couples are safe? Duly noted, man.)
Dean preps the weaponry. Just...fire. Lots of fire.
Tumblr media
Sam thinks the kids might still be alive somewhere underground. Dean low key flips out about the idea of any of the kids getting snatched and heads straight to Lisa. When Lisa opens the door she looks harried, Dean looks dorky. Awww they’re so cute. (Man, I love Dean and Lisa almost as much as I love Dean and Cas. It doesn’t hurt that Lisa’s smile is like the frickin’ sun.)(Boris: Vigorously nods in agreement.) Dean hands Lisa a credit card and tells them to go on vacation together. Guys, it’s a TOTALLY NORMAL gift for a 9-years-later hookup to give. She asks Dean about the hinky name on the card but then Ben shows up. “Make him go away, Mommy,” says a decidedly chillier Ben. Lisa takes the hint (while Dean’s hunter hackles rise) and the door gets slammed between them.
Awwww shiiiiit, a monster’s got Ben!
Dean stalks around the house, looking for clues. (Again, in the hunting context we’re like okay COOL good job and in the real world context we’d be going SHIT LISA CALL 911 he’s outside of your house!!!) Dean finds the telltale blood on the sill. Ben’s done got snatched. Dean races to the car. It’s not blood on the sill, he tells Sam. It’s….
“Red dirt,” Sam concludes as we scene jump to one of the buildings under construction. (SIDE NOTE dudes I used to live near Sedona AZ the capitol of red dirt and when dried it did not look like blood. What I’m saying is, someone get some decontamination crews to this neighborhood. It’s a biohazard zone. No wonder property’s so cheap.)
They investigate the house. Dean finds the basement, hears a noise, and heads on down. He finds trapped kids (including Ben) and tells him that he’ll be free soon. Meanwhile, Sam (Sam is here too!) gets confronted by the nosy realtor with the muffin baskets. Downstairs, Dean discovers the caged realtor in the basement. Wherps. Sam’s smart, though, so instead of getting talked into buying a house he whips out his trusty business card.
Tumblr media
Fake Ben gets all up in Lisa’s grill, asking for food, so Lisa offers him pizza. Fake Ben agrees and Lisa notices his reflection in her shiny coffee table. Yeesh.
Tumblr media
Lisa may be having a shit time, but Dean’s enjoying his father(????) & son bonding moment as they work together to free and comfort the other children. Dean busts a hole through the window and gets everyone out. Just then momma changeling appears. Dun dun DUN.
Lisa confronts fake Ben. “I love you, mommy,” he says in response. Lisa grabs her keys and gets the fuck out of town, but there are kids in her lawn ready to go all Children of the Corn on her. She heads back inside.
Momma changeling gives a good fight, beating the shit out of Dean and Sam. All the while, Ben calmly gets all the kids out. Sam blasts the changeling mom with fire and the fire cascades to all the changeling children. They erupt into flame and ash, including the ones tormenting Lisa and Friend of Lisa.
Lisa races out as the sun rises and greets Ben joyfully. They head inside, Lisa sets Ben up with food and headphones, and then Dean fills her in on his line of work.
Tumblr media
Dean asks one more time about Ben’s parentage and Lisa sets him straight (OR DOES SHE). She took a blood test...it was a dude she met in a bar. “I swear you look disappointed,” she says as Dean looks low key devastated.
“Some stuff happened to me recently, and, uh. Anyway, a guy in my situation. You start to think, you know. I'm gonna be gone one day, and what am I leaving behind besides a car?”
Dean. You’re breaking my fucking heart. Lisa asks him to stay for a while and he gets the fuck out instead because he doesn’t think he deserves good things. (weeps some more)
For Science:

Basically if they’re both in the same frame I am DEAD. They’re tooooo pretttyyyyy.
I uncurl from my ball of sorrow to recap the Sam is Here Too ™ portion of the episode. He’s checking up on his mom’s friends. They’re all dead. He meets Ruby and she tells him they’re dead because of the Yellow Eyed Demon. Sam demands to know who she really is and she goes all black eyed on him. Ruby insists that she’s on his side. “It’s all about you,” she tells him. She’s just trying to figure out how all the puzzle pieces fit together. And if he plays ball, she’ll help him save Dean.

These Quotes Want Some Ice Cream:

Gumby girl. Does that make me Pokey?
I’m interested in you because you’re tall.
Something’s wrong with the kids in this town.
We'll just bust in, drag the kids out, torch them on the front lawn. That'll play great with the neighbors.

13x01: Full Episode Deconstruction
What am I supposed to say here? Sincerely, what? How can I even begin to create a coherent commentary on this episode when the imagery in my head is the entire crew with their balls out? *prostrates myself on the floor again* *fighting back tears of ever more resilient hope* *because them balls are so beautiful, babes*
I mean, if this isn’t balls out then I don’t know what is. And what the fuck does balls out even mean in the first place?
It means the narrative tying back to the first act, which is S1-3. But they’re bound to - and have so done - do callbacks to the start of the second act as well, which is S4-5.
I believe they’ll be picking and choosing to do callbacks to all the most memorable moments because this final stretch of the road is all about pulling the curtain back and revealing what the show really is all about, what the narrative has really been trying to tell us all along, moving us into an ending that feels surprising and yet wholly inevitable.
Meaning the narrative is wrapping up and is singing its last note as it hurtles down the highway towards positive endgame. So far the sound of that note is a thing of epic proportion and we only have the first episode.
*light sheen of sweat on my brow*
So, here we go, upwards and onwards with this review.
Let me tell you, firmly, that we screamed, we ( @margarittet @bluestar86 @tinkdw ) all screamed out loud as soon as the first notes of Nothing Else Matters started playing.
Anyone who has seen the S12 recap reel that they released during SDCC this summer will have been screaming their heads off as well, because that reel was all about family and love and it was so CasDean/DeanCas/Destiel heavy that one cannot even begin to fathom the joy it’s brought all summer long.
And here they go and use the song again (well, as Saz pointed out, now that they’ve got the rights why wouldn’t they?) but also we were just amazeballed in our eye sockets at the reveal that it was the chosen opening song and omfg we were four seconds in and already we could just tell that this. Was going. To be. Epic.
And fuck me I barely even know where to begin. So I’ll follow the above comment on the opening  music mind-melt with… the first scene, I guess. Feels a bit boring and standard since so much meta has already been published but, oh well, can’t be galloping on the back of a unicorn over the rainbow in every post.
…….. Can you?
No. Okay, no. Keeping it neat and tidy. Scene by scene, blow by blow —> off we go.
1. “Father?”
I have a feeling this season is going to be about fatherhood.
That’s totally sarcasm, because we all knew this season was going to be about fatherhood. Dabb has stated it on more than one occasion. Here’s our first introduction to Jack and glowy daddy devil eyes fade and give way for confusion almost immediately, which made me do a little dance and almost make a little love to poor Tink sat beside me on the sofa.
Yes, we knew he was going to be a blank slate but actually seeing it, seeing ALL of this episode play itself out, still gave shockwaves of pure awe. There he is. It’s Jack! Pleasure to meet you, finally.
2. Ummmmmmmmmmm no
Tumblr media
I mean YES. Because oh my God, look at his wings on the ground. They’re too magnificent for words. (yes @magnificent-winged-beast that’s a nod to you) (a sad one) And Dean’s face. Look at Dean’s faaaaaaaace. And how it shifts from utter disbelief, like he can’t even compute, like, no, this isn’t supposed to happen, this isn’t right, and into focus at the reason for it and what can be done about it. It’s like he’s looking at Cas thinking How…? Why…? And then his brain clicks and all he can think is Nephilim.
(what is sort of horrifying to think about is that, to Dean, Jack is a baby - Dean doesn’t know that Jack’s all growed up...)
Tink has been banging her drum for this moment of Dean pulling his gun and running up to scare the bejesus out of Jack since May. I think I might’ve given her a bruise from screaming YES and shaking her by the arm. :P
3. Visual Manifestation of Power
Sam is Sam is SAM. God, I love Sam so much throughout this entire episode. He’s so Sam. That’s a shitty comment, but seriously, he IS SO SAM. Compassionate and logical. I believe this season is going to be so good to Sam and he’s already stepping into those Leader Sam boots.
As ever, Dabb uses a scene with efficiency and establishes a lot of things for us here.
Jack has a mission - he wants his father and needs to find him. Jack’s eyes glowing throughout the scene tells us that, no matter how calming Sam is trying to be, Jack hasn’t begun to trust him yet, and then Dean barges in, gun drawn, spots those glowing eyes, takes aim and fires off a shot. So the instinct of self-preservation takes over and Jack’s powers manifest.
Tumblr media
The visual of Jack’s power is so goddamn brilliantly effective, because I think we know he’s bound go dark side, and he is fucking scary here. (I hope we’re right) (we have to be right in that he’ll go dark and I can’t wait!) (I can’t wait for Dark Jack!!) He knocks the brothers out cold.
TITLE CARD: it’s so fucking beautiful, what else is there to say?
Tumblr media
My first reaction - as I’m certain most of ours was to it - was literally holy fuck, it looks like the sun!!
The up-side-down cross with an I inside it makes me think of how I believe this season will focus on the question of identity more than ever before, based in Dean finally beginning to trust, to have faith in people outside of himself, easing up on his need for control, all of this immediate and necessary stepping stones toward him finding self-worth in realising all of his self-worth is not in being the hammer, it is just as much in being the shield.
He can take the backseat and still be useful, appreciated and loved.
4. Burning on the Ceiling
Dean dreams of Mary stepping between the brothers and Lucifer.
So, this dream sequence tells me that Mary going through the rift is - to Dean - the same as her dying, killed in hellfire once again, and him unable to stop it.
But what else does this image from the Pilot hit home? This nightmare image of Mary burning on the ceiling? What does that image represent to Dean Winchester?
Well, it set the course for his entire life, didn’t it? Losing her again is like a sudden reset, as though perhaps that change that had begun to take hold now after 12x22 was nothing but smoke and mirrors after all and this proves it. Whatever hope Dean had begun to feel for the future was taken from him with Cas’ death, and this flashback to his helplessness as a child when watching his mother burn only underlines how all the change he’s been going through is for nothing: he’s back right where he began. There is no happy ending in the cards for him. Ever.
Mary also bookends the episode, so Dean having a nightmare about her death leads into the reveal that no, Lucifer did not kill her the moment the rift closed: she’s still alive and, moreover, Lucifer is hellbent on her staying that way.
What else will you be proven wrong about, Dean Winchester? <3
5. Does He Have Wings?
The brothers wake up and we get a closeup of Dean picking up his gun. Yeah, he won’t be deterred by some freak power show, they’ve dealt with those before, and he is clearly hellbent on finding Jack. There will be no asking first-shooting later - that kind of power isn’t messed with, it’s put down before it can kill anyone.
Tumblr media
The cut on Dean’s lip intrigues me. He keeps touching it, it gets worse, then heals up, and at the end of the episode Mary has a cut in the exact same place after Lucifer hits her. There’s a visually established link between Dean and Mary in this episode. She was always an incredibly strong mirror for him, so this is bound to be meaningful later on. What’s lovely is that she remains a Cas mirror as well, stuck in her own Purgatory.
6. Nature Child
Tumblr media
I love this shot of Jack’s feet walking in earth and dried pine needles, Jack surrounded by the forest. It feels organic and non-threatening, Jack sussing out this planet of ours with every new step he takes, and it’s even a subtle link to Cas and how he loves nature.
7. Pirate Pete’s Jolly Treats
Seriously, though. Seriously. We have a fast food joint with its menu changed by a blue-eyed and dark-haired Cas-on-the-outside/Dean-on-the-inside mashup of mischievousness. There is a joyful wink here that is not even subtle anymore and there are no fucks given and I love it. Please let it continue. (I have zero doubt that it will but, as ever, I could be wronggg)
High Seas Butt Combo is probably my favourite, but the buttshake has such a nice ring to it, too.
Now, Clark is a delight whatever view you take on him. Either he’s a guy with a wicked sense of humour and buckets of self-assurance who goes wide-eyed and looks rather delighted at the sight of a naked dude - or he’s all those things and just rather amazed at a dude without a stitch of clothing repeating the word “father” into his intercom. Whatever else there is, at the very foremost, there will most likely be friendship here as it seems Clark reappears in 13x03.
Clark calls his mom -->
8. Sheriff Barker
*insert other people’s brilliant meta on the FUCKING MUG*
The FUCKING MUG could be a plant of the place itself, that something big will happen later on in the season in the spot where the rift occurred, where Jack was born and where Cas died. Kind of a significant place to remember the name of… Then again, they could easily plant it in dialogue or just bring up “the place where Cas died” so… Very very very visual plant of that mug. Or perhaps Phil Sgriccia is selling these mugs on eBay and is making a not so subtle product placement… (goes to check eBay to immediately endorse) (I’m a sucker for a good mug)
9. “Cas is…”
Tumblr media
Look at that big beautiful body of water (rebirth) and the mountains (knowledge) and that lone white sailboat in the middle of it. Just so pretty, if you ask me.
Dean: We still have holy oil, right? Sam: For what? Dean: ‘Cause we’re gonna have to hit him with everything we’ve got. Sam: Hold on a second. Can we just talk about what happened back there? Dean: Sure, which part? Let’s see - Crowley’s dead, Kelly’s dead, Cas is… mom’s gone, and apparently the Devil’s kid hit puberty in thirty seconds flat. Oh, and he tried to kill us. Sam: Yeah, because you shot at him. Dean: I tried to kill the monster, Sam, it’s kinda what we do. Sam: We don’t know what he is yet, Dean, and I had it under control. Dean: I’m sorry, are you defending the son of Satan? Sam: I’m not defending anything. I’m just saying, look, with everything that’s happened I’m obviously spun out also, but we need a plan. Dean: Yeah - kill him. That’s the plan. Look, right now all that matters is finding him and ending him before he hurts anybody else. Now, once we do that we’ll figure everything else out. Sam: What about Cas? Is he really dead? Dean: You know he is.
Ohhhh Dabb, the evil man. I’m sure there’s a ton of coda after the weekend (I’ve glimpsed one or two!), but wow, Dabb left out the scene of the brothers going back outside before going after Jack, both of them standing on that sand, by Cas’ body, taking in those wings in daylight, Sam maybe just double checking for a pulse or any sign of life, Dean… well, I think he’d still be just blankly staring because it’s starting to sink in.
Then Dean lifting Cas in his arms and bringing him inside while Sam goes and gets that sheet to cover him with. Oh, my heart. This is where that “You know he is” from Dean stems from, right? Yeah. They moved him inside and they know that there’s nothing they can do. Sam still holding out the smallest hope and Dean feeling it deep inside, that this is it. He’s lost Cas. And nothing else matters, as this entire episode demonstrates to us.
*mind* *so* *fucking* *blown*
Here’s the thing. In this my most recent long ass episode deconstruction I talk about how Castiel entering Dean’s life sets about a change, sets about a sudden need for self-examination, because Dean’s attraction to Cas is undeniable even to him and, to be honest, looking at that small smile in 4x05, he looks like he just might be in the first stages of falling in love. And the point of the love story (of any love story) is to push character progression. To make Dean need something more out of life, which will lead to him slowly daring to hope for more, because the need inside is taking over and is overriding any fear of the possible fallout.
Shooting that grenade launcher and tearing down that wall at the beginning of 12x22, which lead directly into him letting Sam go off and lead a mission before turning around and confronting/forgiving his mother, was a leap and a bound for Dean’s individual arc. What I’m getting at is that the above dialogue ties back into the image of Mary burning on the ceiling and Dean’s loss of hope. He is so fucking bitter, right? “I tried to kill the monster, Sam, it’s kinda what we do.”
It’s like - okay, so this is my only function on this Earth: to kill. Well, then, let me kill. I’ll kill anything and right now what needs killing is this thing related to the fucking Devil. This is all I am, right? This is all I’m meant to be or meant to have.
What is so remarkable about this dialogue is that Sam is subtly, but firmly, standing his ground, just as he did in 12x20 when they had the whole Cas-isn’t-himself exchange, where Dean was spun out of his head with fear, and Sam just did not see the situation in the same light at all. Sam gets to even make the awesome statement “and I had it under control.” Fuck yes, you did, Sam - you’re in control of this situation and Dean is spiralling through his anger-fuelled denial of his grief, wanting a target to blame and having it.
I love you, Sam Winchester.
Dean’s face after he says “finding him and ending him before he hurts anybody else” is also telling of where his head is at and who that anybody else is in relation to. (yes it’s Cas who got hurt)
And then they’ll figure “everything else” out - as in what to do about Cas’ body that they left behind in that house.
And then, of course, we get the lens flare to end all lens flares.
Tumblr media
I mean, when the fuck has this colour not been used in a situation related to Cas and now they are fucking undeniably tying it to Cas by having it flare TO CAS’ FUCKING NAME. *they will murder us all* *balls so fucking out and dangling in all their glory*
The rest is under the cut. It got long. *smiles in friendliest manner*
10. North Cove
Take note. I have a feeling the name of this place will be on the final exams. ;)
11. Heaven Divided
Cas lying dead on a table will haunt me forever.
So they establish that there is a side of Heaven still on Cas’ side, and one side that is decidedly not.
*hands clapping ecstatically*
The Decidedly Not side calls Kelly “the brood mare”, the more Empathic Angel clearly aggravated by it. It’s established they want Jack and when the Decidedly Not angel mutters that of course Jack’s gone, looking down with something like disgusted disappointment at Cas before covering him up again, we get this expression from the Empathic Angel as Decidedly Not moves off:
Tumblr media
Now, she actually looks smugly pleased here, right? Like she’s happy her companion doesn’t suspect what she’s really up to. I’ve no spec to add because I’ve no fucking clue what this means, but Heaven being up to old tricks doesn’t feel too far-fetched. Wether it’s tricks for the good or tricks for the worse remains to be seen. It is doubly-intriguing that the angel looking like she’s up to misbehaving is the angel empathic to Cas, thinking he “deserved better”. This expression is also linked to Jack, though, and the fact that he’s gone: is she looking pleased because Jack slipped through their fingers? Or are there bigger things afoot here… We shall just have to wait and see!
12. There Is No Such Thing as Weird
I mean, this just made my fucking day for the rest of the fucking year. My brain, my head, my soul and my heart - forever singing praises, because yes. If nothing else had given me the balls out feels, this would be the moment that I just went holy fuck they are making a fucking statement right here and right now because THIS IS WHAT THE SHOW HAS ALWAYS BEEN ABOUT. And this made me feel they are bringing it to the forefront now. This is what this season will be dealing with: no more black and white, all of it glorious shades of grey all over.
Honesty.
Ie. BOOM SHAKALAKA: curtain drawn back and look at the truth of us.
Sheriff Barker: There is no such thing as weird. Everyone’s normal in their own way.
I do so adore you, Andrew Dabb.
Tumblr media
I was so happy when Jack said that Kelly is in Heaven. She sacrificed herself out of love because she had such faith in him, she felt his goodness surge through her when he saved her life, and I will continue to believe he saved her life out of the love she’d already taught him, rather than blind self-preservation - and the same when he killed Dagon. That’s why the flash he gave Kelly of Cas stepping in front of her contained the dialogue “You get away from her” rather than “You get away from them.” But I shan’t digress. I’m just happy she’s in Heaven.
And “the bad woman burned”. Dagon as representative of evil in 12x19 is no surprise, but oh my God how nice to hear Jack label her as such. He remembers the universe screamed, which is amazing exposition for his powers.
I kind of love how there’s such an air of Jody around Sheriff Barker, and definitively a mothering energy as well. I wonder if both mother and son will be a possible addition to Wayward. It’d be such cool beans.
Clark asks Jack what he’s on and we just get Jack being Cas, wearing a tan jacket and just feeling like Cas and it’s amazing. Yeah, it is fucking amazing. And Jack’s hungry —> so fucking human. As in showing his humanity, not foreshadowing anything human for Cas!! (just to be clear)
13. Baby Is So Dirty!!
So the brothers arrive to Jolly Pete’s and it’s Sam’s idea to go check it out, while Dean is being overtly aggravated with the mere idea, right? He sends Sam in alone so that he can call Jody, which I personally think is a pretty amazing sign that the codependency is continuing on its track of crumbling into dust. After the call, Dean sits for a second, reflecting, and since he’s alone he takes the opportunity. (we know what he does - he goes around the corner and prays)
14. Sam and the Butt Combo
This is a well-written, tight piece of exposition right here, but nope, I’m leaving it for now and might come back to it another day because I love Miriam.
On Friday we were all loving the fact that Sam spots that menu and does his Reaction Face to it - his oh, ok, so that happened face. It feels significant for this season. Especially since that menu was created by our walking, talking Cas/Dean in-on-body embodiment.
Also, Jack has the coolest fingerprints in the history of fingerprints.
15. Elsa
Okay, so I sincerely just love this shit. Any Disney reference breathes air into my lungs and mentioning Elsa is… well, it’s fucking significant because shedding your tightly held facade to be free of the idea of what you should be, and be happy with who you’ve been all along, is kinda the point of Dean’s arc.
Now.
Miriam: I punched a wall once. Well, a poster on a wall, but same diff, right? Freshman year I had this roommate - Becky - she had this giant poster of Elsa - you know, from Frozen? And I mean, first: who brings something like that to college? A cartoon, really? Like, hello home school, right? Anyway, Becky was - and I say this in the most feminist, screw the patriarchy way - a giant super-bitch. She’d take things and break things and piss people off and just do whatever she wanted, no matter who it hurt. It’s like the whole world was just Becky to her, you know? Dean: So you punched her poster. Miriam: And lit most of her stuff on fire. I’ve got issues. Sam: Dude, what’d you do to your hand? Miriam: Don’t ask. He’s super-sensitive.
Watch this scene again and watch how Dean reacts to her dissing Elsa, dissing liking cartoons at college age, dissing home schooling, look at how he just relates to fucking ALL of it and how he’s so done with her. He then brings out a bottle of alcohol, takes one swig of it (after fucking praying and getting nothing for it and brutally attacking a sign as a violent outlet for... despair, pent up grief, fury - take your pick), pours the rest on his wound and doesn’t drink a drop more of it, all the while being mostly aggravated with the scantily clad, attractive girl on the opposite side of Baby’s roof.
Tumblr media
I mean, I’m just saying that he didn’t ask Sam to get him a burger and he didn’t focus on the fast food right in front of his nose, he barely touched that drink and he’s not for one second seeing this girl as any kind of means of distraction. Idk if we will get coping mechanisms galore in the coming episodes, but personally I would rather he shut himself away in a darkened room and didn’t want to engage with the world at all because what the fuck is even the point? He’ll do the job, but other than that? Meh. (but we’ll see) (and if we do get coping mechanisms HEY that is so all good!)
Baby is like a lie detector. Shit usually gets real around Baby, so no wonder Miriam’s calling out of Dean’s deeper personality traits come out here, as well as the call-out to how he’s super-sensitive. Like whaaaaaat? YES.
Miriam has come to act as exposition for how Dean really feels, rather than how he’s acting. She can see right through him, thanks to being an angel and all, and it’s interesting which buttons she immediately chooses to push.
So I read this dialogue as being a deconstruction of Dean himself:
his non-performing side is tied to the Elsa poster
his toxic masculinity is tied to the super-bitch
the poster got punched
most of super-bitch’s things got lit on fire
And “It’s like the whole world was just Becky to her, you know?” to me is such a resounding uppercut right into the jaw of control freak Dean that I can’t even.
And then Miriam ends her statement with a “you know?” which is so telling, because Dean does know. He hasn’t related to the world in the selfish way Miriam paints it out as, but THAT IS HOW HE IS FEELING RIGHT NOW.
So fucking guilt-ridden and full of self-blame that he can barely even stand it, as always - thinking that if he’d just related to Cas as CAS, rather than him seeing everything through his need to be in control of everything all the time, then perhaps Cas would be alive right now.
But there’s something else there, too - a budding hopelessness, a growing not-giving-a-fuck attitude, and it will be challenged and underlined later by Miriam calling our attention to it with one of the most epic lines of this entire fucking series.
16. Flickering Lights
I had my comrades of the evening giggling like mad because, well, fan fiction territory galore. Flickering lights as Cas and Dean get it on. (I’ve read too little fan fiction to have been clued in on the joke without being enlightened but omfg just hilarious)
Then we get Jack as a fucking Cas-mirror again with “I like it. I like nougat.” (“I like emojis” and his literal way of communication just… omfg yes, because this Castiel is not the one coming back from the Empty. I believe we will get a more focused, BAMF Cas back who will have a mission and who will be completely dedicated to it, but he’ll still be Cas, with all the lessons he’s learned thus far.)
And we get Dean-mirror Clark (I’m sorry but his last name is Barker and… I mean, dogs bark and… there’s a whole lot of inference that can be made here but… okay just so amazing), who began the sequence at the police station with soft judgement of Jack’s sanity, to moving into assuming he’s high - and connecting with that behaviour - to now calling Jack “magic”. Such a Dean trajectory of rejection->acceptance. I raise my hands and applaud.
Tumblr media
Jack is adorable. ^^^^
And here comes the angel radio and yes, absolutely, such a Dean and Cas first meeting callback that I almost want to lie down and cry and cry because just yessss please. All of the S4/S5 callbacks!! (all the callbacks) (from all over!!) (please)
And Sam tasers Jack in the back, which tells us electricity actually knocks this powerful being out cold and it must be linked to his humanity, right? (we’ll see if this is used by Dean)
17. Honesty
This is one of the most amazing scenes they could’ve given us this early on. This entire episode is telling us that this show is taking a turn for something wholly fresh, right? I mean, this is also Dean being so fucking done with putting on a performance - he does not CARE anymore - but it still sets the precedent for this season dealing with honesty and truthfulness and open fucking communication in completely new ways. *crossing fingers that it is so*
Sheriff: So what’re you, some kind of superhero? Dean: I’m just a guy doing a job.
Holy fucking hell does he not think of himself as a hero right now. He is so broken. Any semblance of a performance has left him. More than that, he is giving “the talk” in a completely straightforward way, and though it’s because every ounce of hope has left him, this is still an adult sat opposite that sheriff. Dean is all grown up.
Dean: So, Jack is a nephilim. He’s half-human, and half-angel. Angels are real, too.
Tumblr media
HIS FAAAAAACE.
Crack goes my aching heart. Jensen Ackles breaks us every time!!
18. That’s Not His Name
This scene between Sam and Jack is golden in so many ways. Both Jared Padalecki and Alexander Calvert bring such heart to it. Dabb has written it with tension and moments of respite that create a fucking amazing flow and the exposition is just beautifully handled.
Tumblr media
Also - Jack is one BAMF.
And Sam, though of course having a slightly ulterior motive for wanting to keep Jack on his side, is still able to relate to Jack on an emotional and intelligent level. (I’m not calling Dean stupid) (he’s spun out and just completely compromised by it at the moment is all)
Jack: I was scared, and when I get scared, things happen. I can’t stop them. Sam: Why were you scared? Jack: Because of the voices. They were so loud, so angry.
So, not a great first impression of Heaven, then. (yay!) Also, Jack’s fear informs the manifestation of his powers. But, there’s more. Jack switches mode from being on alert to sitting cross-legged and relaxing, surprising Sam by asking if he’ll tell “them I’m sorry.” Meaning the sheriff and Clark, of course.
Sam: Jack, how are you-…? How are we talking right now? I mean, you’re not even a day old, how do you speak English? Jack: My mother taught me. Sam: So you talked to her? Jack: I was her. Sam: Okay, and your… powers. Did she teach you those too or…? Jack: No, I… I don’t know why these things happen. It’s like I’m me, but not me. Sam: Jack. Look, before you were born you opened up a door to another world. Do you remember that? Jack: Yes. Sam: Okay, um, could you do that again? Jack: I don’t, I… I have to find my father. He’ll protect me. Sam: Jack, you gotta listen to me. That’s not really what Lucifer does. Jack: Lucifer? No, that’s not his name. My father is Castiel. Sam: What? Jack: My mother, she said Castiel, he would keep me safe. She said the world was a dangerous place. That’s why I couldn’t be a baby, or a child. That’s why I had to grow up fast. That’s why I chose him to be my father. Where is he? Sam: He’s dead.
Okay --> Holy Graal of Exposition.
So I read this as Jack not “talking” to Kelly meaning that he felt what she felt, he heard her thoughts - he was her, and she was him.
How I interpret this scene is then that there’s a clear difference between:
Jack talking about his powers and appearing unsure
Jack talking about opening up that door, remembering it, and looking somewhere between disliking the memory and threatening pain if Sam pushes him further
Jack talking with ease and softness about Kelly
This differences underline for me how much Jack loved his mother, his love informed by how much she loved him because he was her, he was kept safe in that love.
“It’s like I’m me, but not me” is extremely intriguing, however. This meta writer - and most meta writers I know - well, we’re pretty much assuming Jack will go bad at some point and this might be key to that switch.
Perhaps Jack is the one under threat of control. I always figured he’d be manipulated (like Christ was tempted by Satan before being put on the cross) but what if this is why he needs protecting? He can’t control his powers and, if someone finds the key, his powers might end up controlling him, especially since he’s connected to everything (he heard the fucking universe scream) (I’m crossing fingers it’s Michael who gets his greasy paws on him) (it.would.be.so.amazing!!)
Jack remembers opening up the rift, but I maintain that if he’s not in control of his powers now, then he did not open up that rift intentionally.
However, he knows it was a bad thing to happen and whatever sensation is linked to it reminds him of his need for protection, reminds him of his mission to find his father. So the thought of the rift makes Jack immediately feel exposed, in need of protection and, most probably, guidance by his father.
Yeah, we screamed the bloody house down, you’d better believe it, at Jack actually fucking stating in dialogue that his father is Castiel, not Lucifer.
I mean, Dabb is not pulling any punches here, naming Lucifer and having Jack reject him as his father figure - he flat out in episode one rejects his birth father - and stating that he has chosen his father, and his father is Castiel.
(there are candles burning right now) (candles of fragrance and love on my altar of worship)
My longer 12x19 meta is grounded in Kelly as the Good Mother and Cas as the Good Father Figure and as concepts they sound almost ridiculously archaic, but my point was that the narrative of 12x19 circles the theme of Good vs Evil through Cas/Dagon-Luci and Kelly/Dagon-Luci, as well as the theme of parenthood so prevalent throughout the entirety of S12. So to all of Jack’s declarations - hell yes and please and thank you!
And now his father figure and protector is dead. Jack isn’t too happy about that. He looks downright vengeful. (common ground with Dean…) (*crossing fingers*)
19. Frigging Angels
So, honesty saves the day and the sheriff is about to let them go without a fuss - to Sam’s astonishment. Yup, a whole new world, Sam.
Dean: So, let’s grab Damien here and find someplace quiet.
Dean is just going to literally kill this newborn being without any hesitation and without asking any questions based solely on the principle that anything non-human falls in the category of monster  and has to die. Okay, fine, Jack is the son of Lucifer but HELLO DEAN HELLO! WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO ALL YOUR LESSONS!!??
Oh, right, this is a callback to the beginning so we’ll realise how far you’ve come. Okay, alright. What was it that began blurring those black and white lines between the good and the monstrous of the world again?
…. Hmmmm, let me think.
Oh, right, it was Castiel coming into his life.
There is so much in season four, but the most prominent thing is this movement into focusing the question that has always been a part of the show:
What makes a monster and what makes a man? (yes I’m quoting The Hunchback of Notre Dame) (shut up)
And now we get to glimpse Dean as he was, so that when Cas comes back the contrast will be un-fucking-mistakable. (I’ve no doubt) (but disclaimer I could be wrong because that ^^^ is spec)
And Miriam makes her reappearance in this sequence! Restating:
Miriam: I don’t know what he’s told you. I mean, I can guess. Some line about how he and his brother “save the world”? Grr. So macho. But really, he’s not a hero. He’s Becky. You take things and break things and piss people off and just do whatever you want no matter who it hurts. Also, you’re a giant super-bitch. So yeah, you’re Becky. And Becky needs to die.
So, here - instead of the Elsa reference and a super-sensitive comment, Miriam calls out performing!Dean with her “Grr. So macho” line. And it ties in with how little macho manly man performance is left in Dean, because of what comes next: “You take things and break things and piss people off and do whatever you want no matter who it hurts.”
And his face tells us what?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He looks like he agrees with her. And he doesn’t even offer up the smallest protest. Because he knows she’s right, and that’s why he didn’t tell the sheriff that he and Sam save the world - he told her the exact opposite, downplaying their importance and making what they do sound like they’re part-time plumbers. He does not think of himself as a hero. Not at all.
The macho bravado of his toxic masculinity has slipped off him with all this loss. He’s thought of himself as Grr-so-Macho because it’s him as the hammer, it’s him on a mission, it’s him with a purpose, and he’s always put himself last, everyone else first, never thinking about himself - even saving Sam has usually meant putting his own life on the line, because Dean has never known who to be without his brother to protect - never expecting to have a future, and now, with the loss of Cas, he understands exactly how big a lie all of that has always been, because he’d started wanting more, had started hoping for more, and now that hope is gone.
There is no normal after watching the man you love die.
And what Miriam is still pushing on here, but even harder than across the roof of Baby, is the guilt of it all, as well as the forever burning thought in his head that he doesn’t deserve better, doesn’t deserve more, that this is what always happens because it’s what needs to happen - he’s one of the Becky’s of the world, selfish and reckless and this is what happens when you can’t work with others, when you can’t open up, when you can’t trust. And love is pain and has always been nothing but pain. There is no happy for Dean Winchester, not ever and good things just don’t happen to him. Or, at least, they don’t last.
But here’s the most epic fucking line ever spoken on this show:
Becky needs to die.
The version of Dean with a poster on the wall and a bitchy attitude needs to go the fucking way of bye-bye. No more dual identity. No more Batman-superhero moments.
It’s time to embrace change, Dean Winchester, and stop with the blame game and the guilt trip and allow this grief to take hold and allow it to evolve you into the type of man who, when the love of his life returns to him, will not hesitate to show him how much he means to him. *crossing fingerssss*
(Okay, there might be tentativeness and Thelma and Louise moments of awkwardly trying to suss out where he stands, but this time I hope that Dean will not be deterred by Cas’ deep frowns and questioning expressions, but rather Dean will step in there and dare to be himself and show Cas who he really is and that he wants to spend time with him. It’ll lay the foundation for Cas’ real transformation... But I’ll write another post about that.)
Also, Becky needs to die to make way, make way, for Team Free Will!
:P
So, now in this sequence of scenes we learn that Jack can’t be blasted away.
And Dean learns that Jack can’t bring Cas back. After Dean’s already prayed to Chuck for help and gotten no answer. So yeah. Ow.
Miriam: …Because Beiber in there, he can do almost anything. Dean: Anything? Miriam: Oh, sweet. Almost anything. Castiel - he’s dead. All the way dead. Because of you.
Tumblr media
And she gets free by pressing her finger hard on that guilt button.
Miriam stabs Jack with an angel blade - doesn’t kill him or even hurt him.
(Dean is mentally taking notes)
Speculation: I mean, it seems pretty probable that Dean is going to try and extract Jack’s grace, right? Somehow use that spell? For Dean it’d be a win-win if he gets to know and like Jack, because extracting the grace means no more nephilim power fucking up the world, but Jack gets to live. I just wonder if Dean will still be suspicious by the time Cas comes back and if this will be a source of external conflict between them. I think that could be fantastic, especially since Cas so expressly will come back on a mission to protect Jack.
20. The Bench
Tumblr media
I mean COME ON DABB!! The callback to end all fucking callbacks when Cas, sat on a bench, professes he has questions and doubts and states that he’s not a hammer (he doesn’t WANT to be a weapon and omfg Cas I love you) and we get our first smile from him. Jesus Christ on a tortilla, that first glimmer of humanity. So delicious.
Sam wants to take Jack back to the bunker and Dean agrees. Sam is surprised.
Sam: So you… changed your mind? Dean: No. No, nothing’s changed. He’s still the Devil’s kid, he’s still evil, he still brainwashed Kelly and Cas, and even if he hasn’t gone Big Bad yet, he will. Sam: You don’t know that. Dean: Yeah, I do. Since when have things ever gone right for us? So until I figure out a way to end him, we bring him home. At least there the only people he can hurt are you and me.
So while Jack is sitting, pensive and Cas-like giving us a visual link to our first human moment with him, Dean is going on and on about his mistrust of Jack. Two conflicting messages and I Wendy I Wanda which one we’re meant to take to heart.
Thing is, we know more about Jack than Dean does at this point, and so does Sam. Sam doesn’t know one hundred percent how to handle Jack or how much of an allegiance they’ll have with him, but his compassion is real, and he’s seen Jack the way we’ve seen him.
Dean is wrong when he mistrusts Jack based solely on him being the son of the Devil - it’s narrow-minded and complete bullshit and not what this show is about. It’s a mindset the brothers have moved out of, which got them in trouble with the BMoL to begin with.
But Dean is right when he assumes Jack will go dark side. He will go Big Bad because it’s in the cards for him and for TFW.
What gives me such a thrill of hope for the future is that Dean, in the first episode of the season, calls out his own lack of trust in anything ever going right for them. I hope the narrative is about to give us a slow series of events to prove him completely wrong. (but I could be wrong about that reading) (I would just love it and it falls in line with everything else they’re giving us) (oh believe me things will get dark and fucked up before they go right) (but I have faith that they will go right in the end)
What’s both horrible and good about him saying “At least there the only people he can hurt is you and me” is that, yes, it shows he really doesn’t give one fuck anymore about anything, even keeping Sam safe, but it also shows he doesn’t care about keeping Sam safe.
Sam just suggested that they bring Jack to the bunker and Dean is acknowledging Sam’s choice and allowing Sam to take his own responsibility for the consequences.
Smack down brodependency. Brodependency SMACK DOWN.
Die Becky die die die!! ;)
(I know there was a character on this show named Becky but I’m sure there are miles of thoughts on her and how Dabb choosing that name so very specifically might just be a not so subtle pointer to stuff so I’ll do a reblog of that topic instead)
Sam also clearly realises how low Dean actually is. He wants to say something, but Dean gets up and it’s time to go.
21. Lake House
Back at the lake house (can’t get over how Baby is so incredibly dirty and so miserable) (aw Dean) Sam tries to coax Dean into waiting to burn Cas, instil some tiny sliver of hope in him, suggesting they pray to Chuck, and Dean bites off “Don’t you think I’ve tried that” and I think we collectively fell into a heap of feels. Seriously, this was a clutch each other and hold on for dear life moment.
Dean fucking praying to God. Which we’d already heard him doing in the teaser they released, but still! Here it is!!
I can’t attack this scene in less than half a page. There is so much here. There is so much pain and need and anger and he even begs him. Twice. Dean begins with saying “I need your help” and moves into “us” when he accuses God for up and leaving them. But it’s ok - the bunching himself together with Sam - because it’s needed here. Dean’s praying for the both of them, for everything they’ve lost.
And oh did I mention earlier a lens flare to end all lens flares? Well, what do you know? They give us ANOTHER ONE! A fucking rainbow. And rainbows in this narrative - as far as I know and as far as this visual underlines - are completely linked to God.
Tumblr media
The fact that the scene is entirely framed by how it’s time to burn Cas’ body makes the prayer - for Dean - take on a whole new meaning, no matter that he’s praying for both himself and Sam.
“We’ve lost everything. And now you’re gonna bring him back.”
Are you... serious, Dabb?? (he is) (he so clearly is)
The flashback ends and Dean tells Sam “God’s not listening. He doesn’t give a damn.”
But he clearly does give a damn. His sign is right there in a visual plant!
And we all went, ohhhh. Will Chuck make an appearance in the Empty? It does make the most sense, tbh. Cas is in the fucking Empty, for crying out loud, from whence there is absolutely no return. So God appearing because his grandson needs a Guardian, a guardian said grandson himself has chosen, kinda makes sense, because who else can restore Cas’ burned out grace and send him back? But we’ll see! Cas might still meet himself in the Empty, tbh, with Chuck there. Either way, it seems the most logical that Cas will get to make a choice. Or will he? .... We’ll know in a few weeks!! :P
22. Kelly
Tumblr media
Jack says goodbye to his mother, placing a hand delicately on her feet and it’s such a beautiful sign of respect and I’d look up the deeper meaning if I wasn’t already twelve pages into this meta. I’ll reblog and reblog gifs with reams of intriguing tidbits, I’ve no doubt! Such a gorgeous visual and, to me, underlining of how Jack truly loved his mother. (as ever, the artwork on the wall as Jack enters the room is eye-catching and those stormy seas with the sunlight breaking through dark clouds give me good feels, must say)
23. Cas
Tumblr media
Yes. I cry. And I cry. And we all cry at this scene. I didn’t cry the first time around, I was way too overwhelmed by amazement that we even got this incredible visual and Jensen giving us one of those subtle, heart wrenching moment-upon-moments that is just… There are no words. What can I say about this scene that hasn’t already been said?
Dean steps in through that door almost as though he’s questioning if Cas will be there, leading with his head, not wanting to hope, but hoping all the same because every other time… But there’s the sheet, and there’s Cas underneath it. And the wide angle shot is so beautiful. Dean sighs. Like he’s been holding his breath with the hope and now… gone. No more. And he looks away, because it’s just too much. And then he looks, and it’s real and all of it is just so damn visceral. FUCK. And when Dean almost breaks down. When he has to stop, like he has that pain in his chest that makes you feel like your ribs are caving in… and he closes his eyes and he bends his head before he looks up at Cas again… And he knows he will be the one to wrap Cas’ body, there are no two ways around it, and he does it and it’s just... FUCK!
Tumblr media
24. Pyre
They burn Cas and Kelly at sundown. Yes, so fitting. And Sam teaches Jack about how humans say goodbye. Also so fitting. And Dean says goodbye and we all just want to lie on a pyre as well. Sam says that they don’t know if Mary’s dead, and Dean says that yes they do, linking back to his nightmare at the beginning of the episode.
To him, Mary is gone, and he doesn’t even feel the urge to try to fight to bring her home, to find a way. I’ve mentioned it before, but his line “No matter how much it hurts, no matter how hard it gets - you gotta keep grinding” when he and Sam were hunting for Cas lends this such weight.
Dean has never been here before.
He’s a fighter, but now the fight has gone out of him, and he may keep grinding for the sake of it, but hoping that the grinding will lead somewhere good is done and dusted. At least according to Singer, who said Dean will carry on doing the job but will suffer bouts of “inertia” - which is another word for apathy, which is wholly connected to depression. I am just so fucking HAPPY!! *sadism*
Tumblr media
The way the pyre is reflected in Dean’s pupils. Yeah. Fuck you, Phil Sgriccia!! <3
25. The Devil You Know
Mary and Lucifer in the AU will be interesting. I love that they might have to try and survive together and that Lucifer sees the potential in keeping her alive. Again, there’s that visual link between Dean and Mary with the cut on their bottom lip and I’m really looking forward to seeing how they’ll use it and if they use it and when and why and how! Oh, but wait - Lucifer has a cut in the exact same spot as well. Curiouser and curiouser.
Final comments: I mean, what more could we want from this episode? I don’t think we could want anything more from this episode. Balls out with the love story because Dean’s entire appearance in this episode have to do with Cas, brodependency barely existent anymore, Jack is fucking perfection, all out orgasmic setup for what’s to come this season and the intimate moments that give us so much character are, as ever, to simply die for. I can’t wait for this week’s episode. OMFG WE HAVE A NEW EPISODE IN LESS THAN A WEEK! THIS IS WHAT LIFE IS LIKE NOW! CONGRATULATIONS - WE SURVIVED HELLATUS!! Now we just have to keep from biting our nails down between each new instalment. :P
Next time I’ll do a pure gif-post. Thanks for sticking with me throughout another long ass meta! ;D

Implied Destiel, Sabriel
"That's not a very decent thing to think, Dean." Castiel gave Dean a disapproving look before walking out of the room. He had just been hugging Dean, and had abruptly pulled off.
Dean rolled his eyes, muttered curses about angelic abilities under his breath and sat on the chair, his head on the table.
"Having a boyfriend who can read your thoughts when he touches you doesn't seem fun." Sam sighed, turning sideways to glance at Gabriel, who leaned against the wall, and grinned.
"You're right, every man has some secrets." Gabriel winked back.
Sam looked at his brother, and then back again at the archangel. "What could Dean have been thinking that pissed Cas off?"
"A bunch of things regarding the both of them, a pair of handcuffs, some roses on the bed, and pie-flavored syrup." Gabriel answered his favorite human, with a shrug.
Sam raised an eyebrow. "Well, why would that make Cas angry?"
"It had to do mostly with the fact that Cas doesn't yet understand handcuffs, and considers licking syrup off each other's naked bodies extremely unflattering and lewd." Gabriel shrugged once again, and Sam blinked disbelievingly at him.
"Those are some pretty accurate guesses." Sam countered, a thought forming in his mind.
"Who said I was guessing, Samsquatch?" Gabriel chuckled, and Sam gasped.
"So you're saying that archangels can read minds without touching the person!?" Sam exclaimed, turning slightly red. Gabriel, knew exactly why.
"Yeah, that's exactly what I'm saying." Gabriel took pleasure at how the giant of a man in front of him was now blushing as red as ripe apples.
"Like, all t-the time..." Sam stuttered, his voice dying away, as followed a fit of coughs.
"If you're talking about the time when you guys summoned me and I showed up in a bath towel, then..." Gabriel's voice trailed off too, making Sam rub the back of his neck, embarrassed to the state of wanting to die now.
"I-I-uh," Sam began, but Gabriel cut him off yet again.
"Hey, don't even think of that." Gabriel suddenly turned serious. "I hate how much you harbour thoughts of wanting to drop dead."
"I was only kidding," Sam muttered back, his mind working up even more now.
"Well, don't kid like that, at least when you're around me." Gabriel said, a little less seriously, before breaking into another toothy childish grin. "Ah, that's better, think of that."
Sam's eyes widened. "No, I won't think of that!" He screwed his eyes shut, trying to think about something else.
"You know, when you try very hard not to think of something, that's exactly what goes around in the back of your mind." Gabriel was thoroughly enjoying himself.
Sam channelled his thoughts more vigorously.
"Your computer!? That's what you think of to divert yourself! No, wait, there's my bro, Lucifer! There, you're thinking about Dean and Cas again! Yeah, that's right, think about your fourteenth birthday cake! Chocolate with rainbows sprinkles, right?" Gabriel laughed, keeping the running commentary going, making Sam frown deeply, before finally giving up.
"Wow, you feel so violated, don't you, Sammy?" Gabriel walked forward, and put a hand on Sam's arm.
"It is, kinda, you know, injustice..." Sam sighed, looking away from the archangel.
"Oh, my, that's some wishful thinking! You wanna be able to read minds too!" Gabriel laughed.
"Stop reading my mind, Gabe." Sam glared at Gabriel. Gabriel stared into the eyes of a man whom he respected, admired, loved, cared for, even swore to protect from harm. His eyes constantly changed color, green at a moment's glance, and blue, the next, and then Gabriel's favorite shade of hazel brown.
"There's no need to think about hurting me, either." Gabriel smiled just a bit. "And you know what? That can be arranged."
"You mean, me being able to read minds?" Sam blinked disbelievingly.
"Yeah. You know, your thoughts suddenly were bright and happy." Gabriel wanted to ruffle Sam's hair like the puppy he was, but he would've had to stand on his tippy toes to do that, so he thought the better of it. "And anyways, yeah, I can let you borrow that ability, I guess!"
"You can do that!?"
"I'm an archangel, kiddo. We guys have some serious high-level mojo, as your brother crudely puts it." Gabriel winked.
Sam thought about it for a brief minute. Gabriel listened in to each of his thoughts and smiled sympathetically.
"Well, aren't you just the best man alive." Gabriel sighed, smiling even broader, and Sam reached to the end of his trail of thoughts. "You don't wanna butt into anyone's privacy. Everyone's thoughts are their own business, right? So you're gonna say no to me letting you read people's minds."
Sam nodded.
"Frankly, I agree to what you say. But its difficult to resist, when you can do it. You stand in front of someone, and you have the ability to tell what the person is thinking, and you can't resist but use the ability to know what he thinks of you, and how its so different from what comes out as words." Gabriel gulped.
Sam's mind began to race again.
"Whoa, whoa there, Sam!" Gabriel straightened. "What are you thinking about?"
"You ought to know." Sam laughed back, his eyes twinkling.
"You actually think I should give my mind-reading abilities to your human brother, Dean?" Gabriel stared at Sam in disbelief.
"He can already read a lot from people's expressions, and I know for sure that he'd never use it wrongly." Sam justified, thinking aloud. "Plus, it'd do good for him to be able to read Cas' mind. They'd be equals in their relationship then."
"But then, I'd never be able to read anyone's minds again..."
"Is that really a bad thing?" Sam squeezed Gabriel's arm, giving him the puppy dog eyes. "It'd sure be better for our relationship too." Sam grinned. "I'd feel a lot better, because otherwise, after today, I'd not like to be in your visual range ever again. And I have a feeling neither of us will like that. Especially one of us."
Gabriel frowned, considering it seriously, only and only because it was his Sam who was suggesting it. After a while, he had decided what he was gonna say. But he still looked up at Sam questioningly. "What's in it for me, Samsquatch?"
"You're the one who reads minds, archangel." Sam half-smiled, cocking his head a bit, letting himself dream freely.
"Oh, I love how your mind works!"

If you need a lock… you have to get a key
Let me start this with a tiny self-celebration - well, it was almost an accident, but accidents don’t just happen accidentally, right? Long story short, if you’ve kept track on my pre-finale spec, you might have seen a statement of mine, namely that Crowley’s role in the finale would be key to the resolution of the story told in the season and, on a meta level, to understanding the season. My usage of the word “key” was almost accidental - I meant it as “crucial element”. I was right. Crowley’s role was crucial both in the story and on the level of understanding the narrative. But I was right in a way that escaped my own understanding at the time, because Andrew Dabb is a smart fucker and in hindsight I could have seen it coming, because of course the story would go in that direction, because it’s Supernatural and that’s how this incredible show works.
Crowley was literally a key. His life became the key that locked the passage between the two realities that Jack’s imminent birth had caused to open. Keys, locks, open, close.
But it’s more than that. The entire season was about keys and locks. Crowley’s death was extremely fitting because he was the one that sabotaged the spell that was supposed to lock Lucifer back into the cage, but instead he played his own game of lock and key with Lucifer and failed, until he chose to turn his own life in the key that allowed Mary to shove Lucifer into the alternate reality. Mary, the metaphorical continuation of Amara, whose narrative was all about key and lock, was clearly going to play a crucial part in the game of key and lock in this season. It’s not a coincidence 12x21 ended with her locking her sons into the bunker together with Ketch, and 12x22 was all about Dean unlocking the bunker and unlocking his mother’s real self from the depths of her mind.
It’s all about keys and locks (and doors/doorways, and let me just drop the word ‘closet’ here. Just because. You know.).
This season, in fact, is a spectacular continuation of the theme of keys and locks that runs along the entire show. I get emotional when I think about the extreme consistency of this show, how the more it goes on the more it plays with itself and mirrors and twists everything that came before. Season 12 was difficult to read while it was going on - and that was on purpose, like 12x12, the manifesto of the narrative techniques of the season, told us - but now that we can see the entire puzzle, everything is clicking in into place.
There are many ways to look at the season, of course, and with this post I want to suggest the interpretative key (lol) of the “key and lock” theme. It is one of the big, underlying themes of the show - we have talked about it a lot during the Carver era. The Mark of Cain, key and lock to Amara’s imprisonment. The key to Oz, symbol of the way Charlie’s narrative paralleled Dean’s narrative of light and darkness. The tablets and the spells to lock hell and heaven… down to the little things like the key that locked the shapeshifter Olivia and Bobby left to the Winchesters, and, oh, so many others, from the Werther box that kept Nadya’s codex inside to Dean and Charlie unlocking the door that separated them from the vampires to get out of the video game in Pac-Man Fever. There are so many examples of doors and boxes and barriers to keep things/people outside or inside (and even passageways between dimensions, like in Safe House - where Dean goes into a different dimension and sees Bobby, reminds you of something?).
But, of course, Carver didn’t invent the theme. Season 7 was about finding a key to lock the Leviathan back after season 6 had Cas and Crowley searching for the key to unlock purgatory… Season 5 culminated with finding the key to lock Lucifer and Michael into the cage (and it’s not a coincidence Crowley is involved with ALL of those plot points!). Season 4 was about the seals to unlock Lucifer from the cage… See a pattern? Season 6, in the most meta episode possible, even contained a meta commentary of that theme, in the humorous form of the famous line “if there is a key, there must also be a lock”. Humor in Supernatural usually conveys the important stuff, after all.
But the theme of keys and locks didn’t start with the seals to start the apocalypse, either. And maybe the biggest element in the earliest season in this sense is - guess what - the Colt. The return of the Colt in the season of the return of Mary Winchester is not a coincidence… The Colt, in fact, served as the key to unlock the Hell Gate from which - guess whom - John Winchester came out and helped his sons defeat Azazel. No need to explain how Mary fits right in the pattern, right?
And Crowley - our character that is always involved with keys and locks, like the rings of the horsemen, opening purgatory, participating in the spell to lock the Leviathan back, being a crucial character in the tablets/let’s close hell forever/etc storyline - was introduced… through his connection with the Colt. His story and the Colt’s have long been intertwined. No wonder that he becomes the key now, in a sort of virtual closing of the circle that started with the opening of the Hell Gate (that allowed the demons that organized the apocalypse to get out) with the Colt, and ended (of course the story isn’t finished, but the metaphorical circle has closed) with Mary shoving Lucifer into the alternate reality. John came out of hell to save the brothers from Azazel, Mary went into the other dimension to save the brothers from Lucifer. The Colt was the key then, Crowley has been the key now.
Of course, I haven’t mentioned the other side of the key-and-lock thing in 12x23, because if Crowley’s life is the key that locks the passage across dimensions, Jack the nephilim is the key that opened the passage in the first place. The son of Lucifer, it’s no wonder he fits in the narrative that was about Lucifer before we even knew why Azazel opened that Hell Gate (or did anything else, starting from Mary’s deal and all) for… of course, we don’t know yet how he’ll fit in the narrative, other than - possibly accidentally, just as a non-controlled consequence of his power - tearing open that passage between dimensions for now. But he fits in it, just like all the yellow eyes, nursery etc imagery collocates him in a spiral of mirrors that starts with the very start of the show. Jack is going to be key and lock - we just have to take out our popcorn and see what exactly he’s going to open and close.
Kudos to the show for its incredible continuity and consistency in themes and parallels. I love it so much.
P.s. Speaking of Crowley and unlocking things, Crowley had Dean smash a closet door once, remember? Okay, I’ll stop here. Well, I titled this piece “If you need a lock… you have to get a key”, and I could finish it by adding, “if you need to unlock something instead… you can use a grenade launcher”. Marghe out.
