You would never call your relationship with Clara simple nor would it be easy. You and Clara had met in high school during a maths class that frankly neither of you were listening to. Clara, who wore the traditional school uniform, looked as beautiful as ever. Which was what drew you to her, to begin with, and after weeks of friendship, you realised she was so much more than her beauty. Your relationship started completely platonic until one day during the summer she fessed up (rather clumsily) her feelings for you. And you once again fell in love with her smile when you admit to feeling the same.
Now years down the line what you two had become something completely foreign. All because of the Doctor. You were there when the Doctor showed up and wooed Clara and well he wooed you too. Even though the opportunity of time travel was also extended to you, you declined - shocking Clara in the process. She didn't understand and thus chaos ensued. She left for weeks at a time - months even - and returned thinking it was a mere minute since you'd last seen each other. It bothered you a lot at first. But then you learnt to live with it. You continued to pursue your career, you socialised with others and you simply lived. Although that didn't come without missing your girlfriend.
So when she showed up again after 2 weeks of not seeing her and asked you to join them on a quote-unquote 'unmissable adventure' you said yes. That's how you found yourself on a planet called Trijased (a word neither you nor Clara could pronounce but one the Doctor could effortlessly). The Doctor described this place as a sanctuary one that was recently overrun with a tribe of Sindaclifiens. The mad man explained how we were tasked to save them, which didn't ease the nerves in your stomach. You were never the bravest. You weren't like Clara you didn't act on a whim. Which was why you continued your mundane life rather than joining them.
"You okay, y/n?" Clara turned to you as the three of you had just fled a group of attackers.
"Yeah..." You breathlessly replied, "No oh lord that was so scary."
The Doctor childishly laughed and grabbed your hand, "I know this isn't exactly what you'd like to here but they're back and we've got to run. Now."
"Oh," You gasped as the Doctor pulled the two of you down the corridor. You turned back seeing the blurred outline of something clearly not human making its way towards you bearing something that didn't exactly scream fun.
"It's not much farther right Doctor?" Clara asked as the three of you seemingly lost the aliens.
"Uh well... oh no," He paused grabbing hold of his sonic screwdriver and soniced the air around him, "I seem to have misplaced the Tardis."
"What?" The smaller woman exclaimed, "How the hell did you misplace the Tardis?"
"Oh, I don't know I just did!" He exhaled.
You sighed at his antics and looked behind you only to see more of them gaining on you. "Uh, guys?"
"Not not, y/n, we've got a huge problem on our hands," The Doctor ignored you.
"Yeah well I can see more problems coming our way," You shouted.
The Doctor and Clara snapped their heads in your direction, "Run!"
After what seemed like hours of running you and Clara had gotten separated from the Doctor, ending up in what seemed to be a storage room. "As much as I miss you and love spending time with you this isn't exactly what I had imagined," You bitterly laughed.
Clara smiled up at you and giggled, "I know I'm sorry. I'd say it's not normally like this but it's always exactly like this."
"I gathered," You commented, "You best be careful though, alright? I can't lose you."
"You won't, love," she moved closer kissing one of your temples, "I love you so much."
"I love you more," You kissed her softly, "But now what are we supposed to do?"
"Ah... well usually the Doctor just shows up and you know saves everyone," She shrugged.
"And if he doesn't?"
"Then we get up and save everyone," Clara chuckled, "but we're in no hurry for that. I just want to spend time with you."
The woman sat you down and seconds later planted herself on your lap. "I miss being around you like this," She told you, "I wish you'd stay with me and the Doctor."
You frowned at the girl, "So why don't I?"
Clara's head snapped up, "Really? You would?" Curtly you nodded, "But you didn't want to. You said no."
"I was scared," You exhaled regretfully, "But nothing is scarier than dealing with my parents without you."
"Oh c'mon they're not that bad," She giggled.
"They are," You insisted, "I need you there to stop me from throttling them."
The pair of you stayed silent for a moment before Clara whispered, "So you'll stay with us? With me?"
"Always," You kissed her again although it carrying more passion and love than before, "I love you so bloody much."
"I love y-"
"Oh, there you are! I've been looking for you everywhere," The familiar voice of the Doctor entered the room, "And I see I'm interrupting something."
"Yes you are," Clara acknowledged. "Do you want me to go?"
"No it's okay," You started but Clara cut in, "Yep!"
"Right okay. The Tardis is outside. Don't be too long and I don't know be safe and everything," He advised before rushing out of the room.
"He thinks we're about to have sex," You laughed.
"Who says we aren't?" Clara smirked at your flustered expression.
"You're joking right?" The woman just shook her head and locked the door. "God, I love you."

Call Sign: Renaissance // 01
Tumblr media
01. Wheels Down
Pairings: Steve Rogers x Reader, Sam Wilson x Reader (platonic) Chapter Summary: You’re on a diplomatic mission in the small, Latin American country of Neruda when an old friend interrupts your peace-building meeting.  Word Count: 1133 Warnings: language, political unrest  A/N: This first chapter is all about setup. I’ve kept it short, but you can expect each chapter to get longer and longer from here on out. For clarity:
Neruda is a made-up country
If you see italicized lines, they are internal thoughts
Special thanks go out to @sugarfreecapsicle and @star-spangled-man-with-a-plan for beta’ing this for me and @sleepingspacedragon and @helladoom for proofing the Spanish dialogue! I adore you all.
Tumblr media
The tension in the room is thick. Voices are competing for agency, looking to dominate the conversation on behalf of their respective groups.
It’s hot. Humid.
The flickering neon light overhead has started to buzz. One of the guys next to you keeps clicking his pen against the table.
All of this, compounded by everyone shouting over each other, causes tempers to flare even higher.
It wasn’t uncommon in these situations. Peace-building meetings were rarely peaceful.
You understand, there’s a lot at stake. Just not for you. This isn’t your fight. It’s your job to stay diplomatic. Negotiations like this are often a raging tempest, you the calm in the storm.
In between the screaming and yelling, you work to ease the friction.
“Parece que hay un desacuerdo sobre el número de escaños que cada facción recibirá en el Consejo de Seguridad. ¿Quizá se podría negociar?”
Translation: You aren’t going to agree on everything. Let’s compromise, people.
You arrived in Neruda six months ago at the request of an Under-General-Secretary of the United Nations, Oswald Mosley. He’s had you on his short-list of conflict resolution consultants ever since you brokered peace in Cyprus when his guys had been at it for a year and a half with no luck.
The conflict in Neruda isn’t unlike others you’ve dealt with. A year ago, the Latin American country had a promising outlook. It ousted its longstanding tyrannical government in favor of a more democratic one, but creating a government from scratch is messy work.
Disagreement gave rise to division. Division gave rise to violence.
After months of unrest, the political factions agreed to sit down and work out their differences. That’s where you come in.
Peace-building missions like this are your speciality: get in, negotiate, and get out. The humanitarian nature of it is fulfilling, but it also means you aren’t sticking around for long.
Just as well. After awhile, you really start to miss home. Something about this nomadic life has always been a little lonely.
"Si a cada lado se le otorgan dos escaños y la ONU emite el quinto voto, ¿todas las partes involucradas lo considerarían justo?"
Translation: I get it, each side needs fair representation. Two seats each on the Security Council ought to do it.
Through conversation and compromise, the two political parties have found some common ground. The future of Neruda depended on it, after all. With your help, a constitution was drafted and free elections scheduled. The last thing to do was determine the make-up of the Security Council that oversaw the military.
"Estupendo. Ahora, sea un encanto y firma este acuerdo, en el que se ilustra los términos ... "
Translation: We’re so close. Sign. The. Fucking. Documents.
Throughout the course of the mediation, you communicate regularly with Mosley. He receives updates on pretty much everything: personality profiles, points of contention, terms of agreement, leadership choices. As a consultant, it’s your job to keep him in the loop.
In your last summary, you notified Mosley that you hoped the negotiations would soon be coming to a close. All that was really left was for each side to lend their signatures to the joint resolution you drew up.
A hush falls over the room as an aid comes in and makes his way to you, slipping you a piece of paper that reads “urgent phone call, line 1.”
You excuse yourself, rushing to your office down the hall as a knot begins to form in the pit of your stomach.  Did the mission you wrapped up in South Sudan come apart? Maybe the leaders in Kosovo weren’t seeing eye to eye anymore. Or worse - what if something happened to the guy you left back at home?
The last person you expect on the other end of the line is Sam Wilson.
“Renaissance! Do you have any idea how hard it was to track your ass down?”
You pull the receiver away from your face as your old friend starts barking in your ear.
“Two tours in Afghanistan together, I thought we were close. Can’t even send a brother a Christmas card.”
Oh, you think to yourself, it’s going to be one of those phone calls.
You wait patiently as Sam nags at you, tapping your fingers against the desk in your makeshift office. Cardboard boxes full of old files line the back wall and the sole window in the place overlooks a parking lot. For a temporary setup, it wasn’t bad. You’ve certainly seen worse.
A quick survey of your desk finds a collection of papers along with a photograph of your old squadron.
It was taken in a bar in the middle of New Mexico. You’re propped up against a piano and the guys are crowded around you, Sam leaning into your side as he laughed. For a brief moment in your life, those men were your family. So much has changed since then.
Between reminiscing and thinking about the conference room conversation, you must’ve tuned Sam out.
“Y/N! Did you hear what I just said?” Sam clamors, clearly exasperated with you.
What else is new?
You snap back to attention, “Ya know, Sam, I’m so glad we got the chance to catch up. We really ought to do this more often, but I have to get going…”
You almost hang up the phone when you hear him calling your name. You bring the receiver back up to your ear, sighing, when you hear him say, “Y/N, you’re not going back into that meeting. You’re coming to New York. Now pack your damn bags and meet me at the airport.”
With that, he hangs up and you are thoroughly confused.
What in the hell did I miss? How did he know about the meeting?
Not even a minute later, you get a notification on your cell with an email from Mosley thanking you for your work and wishing you the best of luck with the Avengers.
Damn it, Sam.
You grab a duffle out of the cabinet from behind your desk, quickly shoving a bunch of your personal items in it, making sure to include the old photograph.
As you walk down the hall to leave, you hear the yelling resume in the conference room. Looking over your shoulder, you see a single-file line exit the meeting. In a matter of minutes, chaos replaces hope for the future of the country.
Meanwhile, Sam begins the descent into Neruda and in the Quinjet’s cockpit with him is Steve Rogers. “You’re sure she’s coming? Ross seemed pretty insistent that it had to be her.”
“Oh yeah, Cap. She’ll be there.”
Pausing, he adds, “I just can’t promise she’ll be thrilled about it.”
With a flip of a switch and a grin, Sam drops the wheels and prepares for landing.

In my experience, Gotham is a polarizing TV series. Any superhero-themed program is sure to bring its critics, but Batman is a character near and dear to the American heart—as he is the last universally beloved billionaire—and it was certainly a risk going with a prepubescent Bruce Wayne. I’m a big fan of Gotham, and even I’ll admit that I’m not completely sold on its interpretation of the franchise’s main character. But that’s OK, because Gotham isn’t about Batman. It’s about the villains. And they’re almost all great. This was not an easy list to compile.
Gotham just feels like Batman, and it’s in large part thanks to the carefully crafted, over-the-top performances in some marquee roles, so without further ado, let’s get to the best Gotham villains.
I should also note that it would be impossible to do this properly without some spoilers. I’ll avoid any spoilers from the last few episodes of this season, but if you’re not caught up on this season of the show, some of this will definitely get you up to speed on where everything stands as of the Season Four finale.
15. Captain Nathaniel Barnes Played by: Michael Chiklis Michael Chiklis just looks like a cop, and that alone qualified him for the role of Jim Gordon’s boss. And his evolution from hardened lawman to judge, jury and executioner in the face of the future Commissioner Gordon’s heroics provided this political science major with a stark analogy for the tradeoff between idealism and pragmatism out in the real world. Every conflict of Barnes vs. Gordon centered around the way things should be versus the way things are, and the finale of Chiklis’ arc (for now, no one in this show is ever truly gone) raised good questions about where the line between the vigilante justice of Batman and The Executioner really stands.
14. Ra’s al Ghul Played by: Alexander Siddig The spiritual father of the proceedings carries a heavy burden. Not only must he justify the spiritual aspect of the rise of Batman (and the Joker), but Siddig also has to pull off whatever a 2,000+ year old man looks like. It’s a difficult ask, and he’s not had enough screen time for Ra’s al Ghul to seem like anything more than a narrator guide from a video game, but he’s given plenty of major moments, and he hasn’t come up short yet.
13. Butch Gilzean Played by: Drew Powell What Powell does with a character limited to being the main muscle on the show is the embodiment of the saying “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” He is one of the chief figures of strength on Gotham (and that was before he fell in a swamp filled with goop from Indian Hill), but his moments of vulnerability are what bring life to the character. His romance with a woman farther up on this list than he is reflects Butch’s limits, but perhaps new frontiers will be unlocked with his evolution into the famed Solomon Grundy from the comics.
12. Commissioner Gillian Loeb Played by: Peter Scolari Scolari brought a new face to this eternal foil of Batman and Jim Gordon, as the comics’ brusque blackmailer in the pocket of Carmine Falcone has been replaced with a shadowy figure in the pocket of Carmine Falcone. Scolari’s semi-detached performance is a fitting reflection of where our political reality currently resides, and he is very much a figure emblematic of the times.
11. Ivy Pepper Played by: Clare Foley, Maggie Geha and Peyton List Poison Ivy is still in development on the show—as evidenced by the three actors who’ve played her—but all three did well building a foundation for what should be a future supervillain the likes of which Gotham has never seen before. Both adult actors have provided the sex appeal intrinsic to the character’s strategy to exploit the stupid part of straight men’s brains, but it’s the child-in-an-adult’s-body aspect that makes this version of a hall-of-fame Batman character so compelling. After falling in dirty water (superhero origin stories would lead you to believe that the healthiest thing you can do is shower in uranium), Ivy Pepper’s accelerated womanhood might’ve been a missed opportunity for more comic relief, but her relationship with Selena is always engaging. Without it, neither of these characters would have the humanizing characteristics necessary to make their time on Gotham worthwhile.
10. Theo Galavan Played by: James Frain James Frain’s arc on the show was an original storyline, one that began with a plot to kill Bruce Wayne, then elevated him to Mayor, and culminated with him assuming the character Azrael from the comics. Frain’s smooth performance is underlined by an intense focus on a mission that all just feels Batman-y, even though this arc is not found in the comics.
9. Tabitha Galavan Played by: Jessica Lucas Theo was powerful, but his sister got the larger share of the badass genes in the family. Like her brother, Tabitha is an original creation of the show, and even though we’ve since lost Theo (granted, death is far from final in this universe), it’s difficult to envision Gotham without Tabitha at this point. Her romance with Butch is the only one on the show that’s convincing at all (a major new one is still TBD), and she was clearly placed in this universe to provide a positive role model for Catwoman—who did not make this list because she’s still stuck at the kids table with Bruce Wayne. Of all the major muscle on this show, Tabitha is the muscle-iest.
8. Hugo Strange Played by: BD Wong BD Wong has played so many doctors by now that part of me actually believes he is a doctor. Of all the doctors he’s played, my favorite by far is Strange. The main reason why no one on this show will ever die, Wong does a wonderful job of straddling the line between madman and genius—nailing the image of what Gotham’s mad scientist should look like.
7. Barbara Kean Played by: Erin Richards The NBA has a most-improved player of the year award, and Barbara Kean would have won Gotham’s MIP award the last two years. Initially, I lamented Richards’ on-screen demise as she was cast as the generic wet blanket to Jim Gordon’s hero (Kean was Gordon’s wife in the comics). Gotham almost lost me early on with their romance—as I just cannot take network TV’s portrayal of relationships seriously—but this new “take whatever she wants with a freaking glowing hand” version of Kean has unchained Richards, and her talents shine through in every scene. Gothamis right to structure a central narrative around her.
6. Mayor Aubrey James Played by: Richard Kind I’ll admit I’m biased on this one. I’m a politics writer here at Paste, and Kind’s performance as America’s bumbling mayor is a little too real to consider given the madness that America’s former mayor, Rudy Guiliani, is displaying every day on cable news. His portrayal of the character is the perfect summation of every empty-suit politician who ever lived, and it really resonates in a country overflowing with these vessels for the superrich. The mayor’s cowardice behind the scenes when contrasted to his stern public statements is just…*kisses fingers*
5. Victor Zsasz Played by: Anthony Carrigan The infamous hitman is a perfectly sardonic bit of comic relief, as Carrigan always finds the right kind of oomph behind his “Hey, boss, so when should I kill these guys?” salvos. A hyper-competent, semi-powerful character is a difficult needle to thread, as there must be a reason why Zsasz has yet to rise to the level of other A-list Batman villains, and it’s simply because Zsasz loves his job as an assassin-for-hire. It’s not about the power he could gain through his proclivity for mass murder, but the pure, utter nirvana that he derives from of every shootout.
4. The Penguin Played by: Robin Lord Taylor Oswald Cobblepot is not just an awesome name, but a fitting vessel for a character whose only real lasting public face is Danny de Vito’s snarling performance in Batman Returns. Robin Lord Taylor has brought a more refined air to the ringleader of Gotham’s underworld, and The Penguin serves as the yin to Jim Gordon’s yang. The universe of Batman is based on the premise that crime is a major industry in America—oftentimes involving our political leaders, as Mayor James demonstrates. Cobblepot likes to present himself a pragmatic choice in a chaotic world, and when the Gotham City Police Department finds itself with its back against the wall, some of the moral choices he presents are inescapably compelling. If crime is going to exist, why not try to bring some order to it? The GCPD can’t do that, but The Penguin can.
3. The Riddler Played by: Cory Michael Smith When arguing sports, I typically argue that numerical rankings should be eschewed for tiers. It’s difficult to compare a lot of similar folks, and drawing lines in between good, very good, and great is a far simpler task. I bring this up because this is where the top tier begins. Cory Michael Smith’s depiction of what I have always believed to be an underrated villain belongs in the Batman hall-of-fame—and frankly, it’s better than Jim Carrey’s semi-unhinged version (which I also enjoyed). It’s clear whether Smith is playing Edward Nygma or The Riddler simply from his posture and facial expression, which makes the Jekyll and Hyde-ian battle raging inside of him all the more engrossing. (Photo: Michael Lavine/FOX)
2. The Joker Played by: Cameron Monaghan Technically, we’re not allowed to call this character with a high-pitched laugh, a thirst for chaos and a bizarre love of Bruce Wayne (and now a purple jacket!) “The Joker,” as Monaghan revealed on Twitter. You know, copyrights, branding and all. TV stuff. Monaghan’s portrayal of The Joker would make fans of The Dark Knight proud. The choice to literally sew a new face on to Jerome evokes the same uncomfortable madness as Heath Ledger’s scars, and the amount of emotion that Monaghan is able to communicate through that mess with simply his face deserves some kind of award. “Jerome” is a delightful madman who brings an unbridled sense of joy to his criminality. I’m excited to watch this new, more serious iteration of this classic character, but I will desperately miss his home run performance as Gotham’s signature weirdo.
1. Fish Mooney Played by: Jada Pinkett Smith Stick this character in any gangster TV show or movie, and tweak the surrealism depending on context, and she’ll fit—that’s just how good Jada Pinkett Smith is. Fish Mooney did not originate in the comics, and the creators of Gotham should be universally commended for springing such a Gotham-y character to life out of the ether. Granted, Mooney likely wouldn’t be as engrossing if not for Smith’s electric performance. The woman completely owns every single scene she inhabits. Fish Mooney gives this show a good excuse to ignore the rules of death, because why would anyone want to take that out? Screw death and copyright law. Fish Mooney deserves to live on for eternity.

Ghost of you, 10/?
Volume: 1.
Number of parts: 10/?.
Pairings: Human!Nine x Rose; Human!Ten x Jack; Clara Oswald x Olivia Baxter (OC).
Synopsis: "Maxence’s results were similar to Peggy’s but his genetic code was presenting some interesting particularities that needed to be studied to find the reason why it was so different."
A/N: I've started writing this fiction last year after I had a particularly weird dream (as usual) and after I wrote the prologue, I've put it aside to work on other stuff. I've gone back to it not so long ago and decided that it would be the fiction I would post next, after not posting anything for a while. I must have watched I am legend and Game of thrones way too much to come out with something like this but I hope you will like it. I am not a scientist, nor did I have a particular knowledge of sciences. I do my researches on the internet like everyone to make sure everything is as close to the reality as possible. I have a literature degree only. Writing is what I do and it makes me explore next fields, and learn new things.
“I wish I were a little girl again, because skinned knees are easier to fix than broken heart.” - Julia Roberts.
CHAPTER 10:
Jack was highlighting the most important data from the results given by Tegan. He was remarking the same details that Colin had noted earlier – details he wouldn’t share – and come to the same conclusions. He was alarmed by the risks there were for Maxence to die from the virus so he sent a message to Liv and Zach for them to keep a closer eye on him and be sure he wouldn’t get in any trouble, more than he already was. This done, he worked on the DNA data he had gathered. Maxence’s results were similar to Peggy’s but his genetic code was presenting some interesting particularities that needed to be studied to find the reason why it was so different. Maxence’s DNA wasn’t entirely corrupted by the virus. The four proteins were still present and mixing themselves with the four new ones in a perfect harmony. Maxence was clinging to his humanity like a drowning person would cling to the lifesaver that came for them. Whether it was a good thing or not, Jack couldn’t tell. His friend and colleague’s side wanted to believe it was because it meant that Maxence wasn’t dead, but the other side of him was having mixed feelings about it. What if they couldn’t reverse the process? What if Maxence was stuck with this mutated DNA? Would the nightwalker’s side be dominant and let him live in this awful condition? Or would it be a perfect mix allowing him to have a better life? Jack isolated three DNA sequences – one fully corrupted, one normal and one mixed – for a future study. He also had Peggy’s sequences but he hadn’t learnt much from them. Maxence was a much more interesting object of study. No offense to the man. Jack first chose the corrupted DNA and tried to determine what could be their role in the human system. Every strand of DNA had a particular function in the body. It was composed of four nucleotides: cytosine, guanine, adenine and thymine. All of these were forming the genetic code of a person according to the way they were arranged. It was all mathematical and almost unpredictable. But that was the funniest part of the job: solving the unsolvable. Clara knocked on the door and Jack opened it to her. She was coming to help him with the proteomics, with the identification of the new molecules composing the nightwalkers’ DNA. They didn’t exchange a word. They only shared their work and began looking for new clues. No visible answers on the corrupted strand of DNA so Jack picked the mixed one. That’s when he noticed something he hadn’t before. The beginning of something it seemed like. The moment everything started going wrong. Thymine and adenine were working together like an inseparable team, as well as cytosine and guanine. The combination for a strand could be infinite but those four could only be combined with each other. However, on this strand, everything was mixed and it was the reason why the DNA was so messed up. Jack looked closer at a molecule of thymine, one of the most essential molecules in the human DNA. It was having a strange form and it was changing under his eyes. The thymine was losing its original form and mutating to adapt itself to the other nucleotides. It wasn’t anything new. It was just the molecules changing and rewriting the human DNA. A sort of evolution, in the wrong way. It was making Humanity stupid and aggressive, back to some twisted primary instincts from another era. Something must have triggered this sudden mutation that usually took ages to appear. It was progressive and not so immediate unless something was speeding the process. Something strong enough to change Humanity so radically. All this new information was written down on a paper that was lying around here. The blood and DNA were showing mutations. They were slower than they should be since the nightwalker in question was refusing his condition. Jack would need a ‘complete’ nightwalker to compare the DNAs and see how someone clinging to his humanity could maybe be the key to a cure that would save the world. However, he doubted that anyone would want to go back outside now and with the lockdown that wouldn’t come to an end any time soon, it wasn’t making any mission possible. It meant that they would have to do with what they had by hand. It was more than they could have expected five years ago. Jack drew his attention back on the other molecules. They were having the same reactions. None of them was spared by the mutation. He added it to the notes. He re-read them, trying to get where this was all leading him and he realised something important about DNA. Something he should have thought of when he had seen that mutated DNA. There was one thing that could cause such a quick reaction and nightwalkers were running away from that thing and needing it all at once. He should have realised it sooner. When thymine and cytosine were mixing each other, it was creating a dimer that was causing kinks in the molecule. That’s how cancers started. And the noctiagus was like a non-lethal cancer. Many cancers were curable when taken in time. It took an awful lot of time to create such process as chemotherapy. How much time would it take to find something that could be working against the noctiagus? They had been working on it for five years and were only finding out how the virus could have come to life. Finding something to cure it or, at least, to reduce the symptoms and give the infected people a better life, would take even more time. It meant that the world would come to an end before they could succeed. It also was to fear that Maxence wouldn’t make it until they found something that could relieve him. He needed to let go of his humanity and they all knew he wasn’t gonna do this. Rose was gonna make sure he would never let go of it. Jack sighed and opened a new mail on the private network Zachary had created for them. He quickly typed his observations to send them to Tegan. He specified that it was useless to send them to Clara since he was working with her at the moment but they could be transferred to Rose. She would be happy to hear her husband was still inside that shell currently wandering in the cage downstairs. He added that the UV lights had to be turned off immediately. He would explain the reason in the complete report he would write later. “This is fascinating,” murmured Clara. “Absolutely fascinating.” “Are you speaking about the mutation or about the virus?” “Both. The way they are working… It’s bloody fascinating.” “Yeah. You might have mentioned that.” Clara had her eyes riveted on the microscope before her. She was observing the virus devouring the cells around it and pushing away the white cells trying to defend Maxence against the infection. It wasn’t working very well on both sides. It was a never-ending battle. “It happened during an eclipse,” she said. “Yes.” “And the DNA can be corrupted by UV lights.” “Yes, but it hasn’t last long enough. It takes ages to change a DNA, not just an hour.” “It still happened during that hour.” “In my opinion, it was caused by a human hand. The eclipse was just a coincidence.” “We gotta find the patient zero.” “We have to try. To save Maxence.” “How can we do that?” “I know someone.” Jack flashed her a bright smile and Clara rolled her eyes. Everyone knew how Jack had gotten so many acquaintances. It was no secret to anyone. He could get anything from anyone because he could be very convincing when he wanted. This was rather dirty in Clara’s opinion but she hadn’t refused some advices to make things go farther with Olivia. Advices that hadn’t worked in the end for reasons Jack ignored, reasons she would keep silent until the day she died. “I’ll talk about this to Tegan first; I need his approval before doing anything.” “Speaking of him… You seem very close lately.” “I’ve just given him some relaxation lessons.” “Jack!” exclaimed Clara, offended. “He’s our boss now.” “He asked for it,” shrugged the former Captain. “T asked you to… I don’t believe this.” She knew Tegan well enough to not believe Jack’s words. The man was too shy and cruelly lacking of self-confidence. Such an indecent offer like only Jack could do would have made him blush and stutter so hard that he would have run away before any answer left his mouth. She didn’t see him accepting to have sex with Jack. Unless... His sudden promotion to the highest responsibility of this lab had him so anxious that maybe, just maybe, he would have taken the offer just for one night. “You’ve tried with Max too?” “He always refused.” “You’re disgusting.” Clara threw a pen at him. He caught it, laughing, and put it aside. After all, she asked and he had answered in all honesty. Why would he lie? He had nothing to hide. “Wanna know why Colin is avoiding me?” “Colin’s a sociopath but an excellent scientist. He shouldn’t be out of this team.” “He was bullying T until I found out and stopped him. He wouldn’t go after me. He’s too scared.” “What have you done to him, Jack?” “Just showing him another side of himself.” “No?” “That’s what he said at first. He changed his mind.” “It’d be faster to ask you who you didn’t have sex with in this building.” “You,” replied Jack with a grin. “Olivia, Rose, Max. Zachary gave in the first day, said this probably was his best experience. Mickey refuses categorically. Martha wouldn’t say no if she wasn’t so loyal to him. I think that’s all.” “That’s quite a long list for you.” “Wanna take your name off of it?” “Keep dreaming, Captain. You won’t have any of this.” She pointed to her body and they both burst out laughing. It was nice to be laughing again but it also felt weird in the heavy atmosphere surrounding them but it also allowed them to relieve some of the tension that was on their shoulders. A guilty pleasure they couldn’t refuse in those dark times.

Allegro was sat on the camp bed, his back on the glass wall his cage was sharing with Maxence’s, and he was keeping still while Rose, Adam and Liv were working on him. He had chosen to have his back on Maxence not to see him wandering in his cage and observing them with his head tilted on the side as he tried to understand what was going on. It was making him rather uncomfortable to be a witness of what could happen to him. The virus was in his system. He wasn’t showing any symptom but it didn’t mean he wouldn’t suffer from them later. He wasn’t a scientist but had seen enough of them working to know that the symptoms could come later. He had seen Maxence turn into a nightwalker when they were out. He had seen his pain and horror and despair as something stronger than him was taking possession of his body. Allegro didn’t feel ready to go through something like this. He was quiet as Olivia was doing the blood tests, filling tubes of his blood and adding them in a sterilized case, as Adam took them away to his lab, as Rose was taking samples of hair and skin. It felt weird to be the Guinea pig they were working on. They were as silent as he was. It was driving him mad that silence. It was as if he was dead and they were working on his body. If only they were making observations out loud! It would break that heavy silence he already hated though he was gonna stay here for a long moment. At least, in the tent, he had Liv who was coming and talking to him. She was here today but she was in no mood to chat. Two man down, it wasn’t something good for them but maybe it was how they would find a cure. Rose and Adam were gone now and Liv was preparing the needle with the tiny sensors. Zach had made sure the settings were good. They only had to connect Allegro to the system. “It’s like a vaccine,” explained Liv. “It will hurt a little and you’ll have a small bump for a couple days.” He nodded and rolled his sleeve up to the maximum so Liv could have access to his upper arm for the injection. She cleaned the area and injected the sensors inside his body. That was it. She was done and she would leave. He would be alone to face his future. He wouldn’t beg for anyone to stay around but he would highly appreciate it if Liv was staying. She went to the airlock and picked a box she brought back inside. She dropped it on the bed. “You’ll find pyjamas and personal belongings in there. You can even watch movies via the interactive screen. You just have to log in your personal space.” “Thanks.” “Someone will always be around if you need anything.” “Okay.” The UV lights in Maxence’s cage were turned off and the sudden lack of light made them look in the other room to see what was going on. Maxence was looking up, confused. He suddenly lay down on the ground as if it was gonna bring the light back. Liv walked to the intercom. “Zach, what is going on?” “Sorry, I don’t have any explanation. The order came from Tegan.” “He just told you to turn off the lights?” “Yes.” That was weird but Tegan surely had a good reason for this. Allegro and Liv watched Maxence. He crossed his hands behind his head and was looking at the ceiling. What was he seeing in the dark? What was going on in his mind? “Can we… like make this wall opaque?” asked the guard placing his hand on the wall behind him. “I guess we can. Let me see.” Liv opened the interactive wall and selected the settings. She went into the walls category and changed the settings. The wall became black and hid what was happening in the other cage. It brought guilt and relief to his heart. Guilt to feel so relieved because he wouldn’t see what he would become in the near future. If the symptoms showed up. For now, he was just a prisoner until someone decided he was no danger to anyone, but with the virus in his system, he was contagious and, consequently, he was locked in quarantine until he was cured. “I’m sorry,” he apologised. “It’s just that…” “You’ve seen his transformation and it’s scaring you.” “Yeah.” “It’ll stay between us. Or you can speak to someone. We’e got someone in here.” “I’ll be alright for now.” “Ask Zach if you need anything.” “Will do.” Liv gave him a sorry smile as if it could make anything better and take him out of this cage. He gave her another smile in return anyway. It wasn’t her fault after all. She was only doing her job and that was when he had done his that he had gotten infected. Sometimes, being careful was not enough to protect oneself against the biggest threat the world had ever seen.

There was someone in the cage with him. He had first heard the airlock and now he could hear the distinct sound of a person moving in a hazmat suit, a person who was carrying stuff around. He didn’t move from his spot. The ground wasn’t very comfortable but he would rather be there than in the bed. He hated the bed. It wasn’t comfy, nor warm and it was lacking of something he couldn’t name. Plus, no matter how hard he tried to sleep, he just couldn’t fall asleep. So, it was better to lie on the ground and observe the ceiling. He couldn’t do that when the lights were on. He preferred being in the dark. It was giving him less headaches and he was feeling less dizzy and nauseous since it was off. But he was a little cold to be honest. Some warmth would be great. Some human warmth would be even greater. However, no one would come and cuddle against him to watch a blurry ceiling. Who would hug the monster he had become? Certainly not the cosmonaut who sat beside him. “Max?” Max. Diminutive of Maxence. Maxence, that was his name. Doctor Maxence Spitz. He was doctor Maxence Spitz. The astronaut next to him was a man. His voice was transformed because of the plastic helmet around his head. He was hermetically locked in this suit. Maxence didn’t envy him. He was locked in a cage but he was free of his moves and didn’t have to breathe smell of plastic for hours. “It’s Tegan.” Tegan. Doctor Tegan Smith. Neurologist. Maybe called T or Tenny for short. His little brother, he thought. He wasn’t sure. A lovely man, shy and lacking of self-confidence. Handsome with his dishevelled hair and three-pieces suit. Doctor Tegan Smith, currently being the boss of this place. “Rose thinks you still have troubles with your sight. I’ve come to check. Do you mind if I do that now?” If he minded… Of course not. He was half-blind and it was a real disability. He was always on alert and ready to attack. Sometimes, he felt furious for no reason at all and needed to unleash all this rage on the closest person or thing around him. But right now, he was calm. He sat up and let Tegan work on him. He answered to the questions the best he could with his hands. He could faintly see the light Tegan used during his medical exam. When he was done, he placed glasses on his nose. Maxence blinked a couple times and his sight seemed to get a lot better. Glasses. He had always worn glasses. Why did he remember this only now? “Would you let me change your bandages and inject you new sensors?” Once again, Maxence accepted the offer. He observed Tegan’s moves as the man was taking care of his burnt skin, of the bite in his neck. His hands were slow and soft. He never hurt him, not even when he did the injection. It was pleasurable, to be treated like a human being. But Tegan left after an apology and Maxence was alone again. Watching the ceiling wasn’t interesting him anymore so he stood up, leaning on the wall to keep his balance. Sometimes, it was really hard to be standing. He walked to the wall and opened its interface. He entered his username ([email protected]) and personal password (crcd120264) and went to his professional space. They had updated it. He had access to all the results of all the exams his team had done. Even of the tests they had done on him. He titled his head on the side, trying to understand what he had under his short-sighted eyes. In those results, he found the reason why the UV lights had been turned off. It always had had a bad effect on a human body and Jack had found out that the lights were increasing the symptoms. Since they were off, his mind was clearer. In his opinion. He felt less confused, but maybe it was just a good phase. Maybe it would be worse later. But right now, he felt clever again and could work and help his friends. Jack was thinking it was a virus created by a man’s hand. A man that had lost control of his invention at the moment of the eclipse, which had led them on the wrong path. He was requiring the help of a couple of special detectives specialised in finding the unfindable: Donna Noble and Camden McCarson. Maxence did a quick research on them. They weren’t described as nice people – Camden was called a “brilliant but incredibly rude detective” and Donna was a “sarcastic sidekick” – but everyone was content with their work. It was worth a try. The feeling of wellness he had had didn’t last long. He opened a window with his vital signs when the first signs of weakness showed up. It was almost imperceptible at first, but he felt it anyway. An oppressive feeling in his chest and a certain stiffness in his left arm. Moving it was impossible without pain. His vital signs confirmed what he was thinking: erratic heartbeats, short-winded, pain in the chest. It was all clear. He pressed his right hand over his heart and used the left one to hit the wall. Zachary was here, sleeping again. Maxence needed to wake him up. He slapped the wall harder as the pain crushed him. He wanted to yell for help but his voice was gone. All he could do was slap this wall hoping it would get someone’s attention – why wasn’t the alarm ringing already? – while his strengths, his life, were abandoning him…

In the next chapter:
I can honestly say that I hate the person who forced him out of his lab to go on the field. Catching a living specimen… It really was a stupid idea and a suicide mission. Only someone who didn’t know about the reality of things outside could ask for such a stupid thing. It could only go wrong and it did. It was a real disaster. Some would say that it could have gone worse than it did. Only three men are down on the ten that were on this mission. One death, two infections. To me, it’s a huge mistake to have sent them outside. Event if it was for a good cause, finding that damn cure, what we’ve lost isn’t worth what we’ve gained. Our leader, my mentor, Maxence Spitz, has been infected when a nightwalker bit his neck. Xavier died protecting him from a possible slaughter and Allegro… Allegro kept Maxence safe until they could come back here. Maxence has turned into a complete nightwalker. He has come back here in a crate and was transferred in a cage immediately after they arrived here. Allegro is infected though he has no symptom. He was transferred anyway.
