im a bit tired of posts along the lines of 'if you see [x lesbian thing] and immediately question whether they're a terf you're lesbophobic'. i honestly think its reasonable to see certain things that are commonly associated with lesbians and have a bit of an immediate gut reaction like 'oh no i hope this isnt a terf'. at least if youre directly affected by terfs, especially a trans woman. everyone who knows me knows i will fight tooth and nail against lesbophobia but i also want tme lesbians to recognize that people who have been directly affected by terfs will have reason to see things like the ⚢ emoji or talking about man-hating or certain historical lesbian art etc and have an immediate wary reaction of 'is this a radfem?'. i also think its reasonable for trans women to want to double check that any cis/tme lesbians they interact with arent transmisogynists, because its not as if radical feminism doesn't use afab lesbianism as a badge of identity. now that doesnt mean any of those things are bad at all, or that they make you transmisogynistic; i think the issue comes from people who see those things and begin accusing people of being terfs, or 'terfy' or 'terf adjacent', etc, instead of just taking it as a sign to double check and look deeper to make sure that person is an ally to trans women. and i think if you are an ally to trans women you shouldn't be bothered by this. you shouldn't take it as 'god, you can't be a lesbian at all today without trans women thinking you're evil and amab-hating' (that is an actually transmisogynistic way of thinking!), you should take it as 'i'm going to double down harder on my support of trans women AND my proud lesbianism to show that these two things are not mutually exclusive in any way and hopefully make sure trans women immediately feel safe around me'

it's hilarious, ridiculous, laughable, every other similar adjective out there, that women's orgs made that statement about amber heard but also kinda depressing, like who are we supposed to count on to stand for us (women) if not women's org that are literally made with that purpose. or at least supposed to have that purpose. like literally what are you even doing as an organisation focusing on women if you can't stand up for a woman in a situation like amber heard. why were any of the orgs formed if they're afraid of harassment??? it's common sense that anything feminism-adjacent will receive some form of harassment, if you can't deal with that you don't start feminist orgs. sorry I'm just so annoyed. now that even dumbasses on tiktok are changing their minds, they finally decided to say something. it took them only 5 months after the verdict.

have really conflicting views on barbie because on one hand it certainly was a liberal feminist shitfest of capitalist apologism and glanced over feminist issues like race, class, queerness and disability, but there are also movies which have attempted to do their criticism more subtly and yes i mean spiderverse, of race & the police, and fail similarly but it's less jarring i think, because spiderverse was not attempting to be As political and thus fulfilled its vague criticism well enough, while the unmet promises in barbie are glaring by comparison. perhaps this is because feminism has so much resting on her soldiers-- rightfully so, but does this mean that feminist(-adjacent) media is crticized more harshly by onlookers, particularly by gender marginalized people? (as we know, of course the whites and cishet men will be upset about spiderverse and barbie respectively no matter what.) i think so. the criticism is justified but the tendency to see one film as open season for criticism and one largely, off limits (save for discussions of the workers' conditions & miguel's characterization-- a few [mostly black] leftists also discuss the copaganda in spiderverse but this is not as mainstream as the first point, it seems) is strange. particularly because mainstream liberalism has encorporated more understanding of racism & antiblackness into itself than it has of feminism (performatively, of course), which makes one believe spiderverse should garner more criticism? one could hypothesize, though, that the ambiguity of liberal feminist politics leaves a haze of discontent around the issues media fails to approach, as it's not tangible exactly what is antifeminist or (most prominently) /why/. what is the essence of barbie's failure to fulfill its promises of feminism?
of course, in general enough liberal circles, neither are criticized. but if you get a little leftier, you begin to see this phenomenon of barbie being criticized more often, or-- more broadly, should i say. i don't think the fate of feminism rests of the success of any franchise, or having better feelings about some media, but i do wonder if having grace for barbie is the best option. best option because, despite its flaws, barbie was a more feminist film than most and thus, pleasant to watch as a woman. it centered women, acknowledged misogyny, and sometimes that alone is just rare. it's also self aware of its capitalist failings, at least. i believe barbie came out around the same time as that "the idol" show, and god knows which type of media i'd like to see more often.

i think we need to reclaim the friend zone. my friends are in the friend zone. my partner would be in the realationship zone. my family is in my family zone. all of the zones are a loving place. they’re just different places. when i reject a guy who i just want to be friends with i want to say that i’m putting him in the friend zone without it being weird. i technically did it already and the guy and i are pretty good friends now. i love my friends (platonically) and they are in my friend zone.

The Great is also really good at sex?
On this blog I obviously talk about sex in romance novels and romance adjacent things often and I really was kind of curious about how and whether The Great would ever really deliver on genuine emotional sex between its leads? Not so much due to the characters but due to the tone of the show and their relationship.
And it honestly was kind of brilliant to see the mechanical, uncomfortable, awful sex between Catherine and Peter in season 1 broken up by this cunnilingus scene that while not emotional definitely got her off way more than anything she had with Leo ever did. It was kind of this first indicator that if Peter put her first and really ….. metaphorically at least submitted to her, they could have something genuine going on, if not emotionally then physically.
We see this continued in season 2, with that same type of sex being used to subjugate Peter just as sex was used to subjugate Catherine in season 1. But there’s a difference: Peter loves her at this point, and he’s happy to give (up to a point). He’s trying to make her love him, so it’s still this one sided thing but it’s kind of knocking at the door of emotionality between them. And I would also argue that the reason why it’s specifically this kind of sex isn’t just because feminism and because funny and because we need more cunnilingus in fiction, though all of that is true…. It’s because she doesn’t have to connect with him. She doesn’t have to see him or hear him or give him anything. It could be anyone down there.
Which is why when they do have full on penetrative sex, the fact that it’s portrayed as this very straightforward thing for the show, with no jokes (aside from people watching in the second sex scene) and romantic music and a focus on Catherine’s face and how overwhelmed she is by emotion…. It means a lot. Like I hate this phrase but they weren’t fucking or having sex they were making looooove. It’s portrayed as hot and it’s given a full romance novel treatment with zero irony or humor. They’re just in love. Contrast these scenes to how Peter has sex with George or how Catherine had sex with Leo even, and there’s so much more intensity.
It’s really smart writing and it’s honestly some of my favorite uses of sex as plot and sex as character development that I’ve seen.

ive been really struggling to articulate this of late but the main reason i will never admit i like or watch any form of anime irl or to people i know irl is how much i despite its accessibility to men and its catering value being solely for men. like yeah yada yada misandry etc but theres such a huge fucking difference between teenage girls like me watching lightly sexual stuff and gradually internalizing or even vocalizing what are supposed to be healthy forms of desire versus seinen mangas barely legal upskirt shorts and completely outlandish but seemingly random and normal discussions on male preferences for tits ass cup size whatever.... men dont talk like this. they dont talk like this because most WOMEN dont let them because they have at the very least a modicum of self respect. this isnt how men and women interact and to throw this...... self assured normalized over sexualized mode of conversation and interaction (which caters only to men btw! if the love interests a 'cool girl' she'll wink and say she masturbates to the mc. if shes a shy twink adjacent blonde she'll blush and cry when side character #2 asks her if she's a virgin! but god forbid there are more than respectful allusions to, say, the boys being sexual objects - they're sexual BEINGS you see) towards insecure loser fourteen-eighteen year old boys who grow up unsocial pornsick and perpetually distant from the women around them is socially irresponsible to the third degree. i get my 'feminism' because the mc is a 'cool girl' cool girl the outline of whose tits and ass are shown to us in every third episode. the men get to say they have a cool storyline and that all anime isnt sexualized for their benefit because there are two minutes of plot discussion which make sense.

I was looking up Nevsky and saw that apparently Medieval heroes are often used by Fascist leaders. Why do you think this is? And if I wanted to write Medieval-inspired stuff, how could I avoid falling into the pitfalls? I can't help but notice similarly that Stannis gets a surprising amount of emulation by Trump supporters and wondered if this might be linked to a similar mentality.
In the main, I think this phenomenon comes from two closely related tendencies on the right. 
The first is cultural traditionalism: the Middle Ages are viewed by the right as a period of time when cultural practices that they like - widespread religiosity (and more orthodox religiosity at that), patriarchal family structures and “traditional” gender roles, the celebration of militaristic values, hierarchical social structures, etc. - were dominant or at least widespread. By contrast, cultural trends that they don’t like - Enlightenment rationalism, subversive academic and artistic thought, liberal constitutionalism, feminism, socialism, LGBT+ activism, racial diversity (more on this in a bit), etc. - are deemed to not have existed or been properly suppressed, making it in their imagination a golden age before modernity caused a declension to our inglorious present. 
The second is racism: while this particular aspect of right-wing medievalophilia was always there as an outgrowth of nationalism’s focus on historical claims to organic communities and territories (building on Orientalist tropes of Western virtue and Eastern decadence), it became a lot more prominent in recent decades in response to 9/11 and an increase in immigration from Muslim-majority countries, as right-wingers sought to draw a direct line from the Crusades (reimagined as a righteous struggle) to the War on Terror and anti-immigrant xenophobia and violence. You see this a lot in attempts to assert that Europe in the Middle Ages was entirely white that comes up a lot in discussions of fantasy genre books, movies, tv shows, and video games (the imagined golden age expands its boundaries, and now the cause of declension are liberal immigration and civil rights laws), in attempts to assert an incompatibility of Islam with “Western Civilization” or a forthcoming “Clash of Civilizations,” and the like.  So how do we as progressives who have an interest in the Middle Ages respond? Well, the first thing we can do is to call out these arguments and the people who make them and spread the truth about what the Middle Ages were really like, which is something that’s happening all the time by medievalists and art historians (hat tip to @medievalpoc, who do heroic work in this regard), by progressive pagans looking to prevent infiltration of their communities by neo-Nazis, by fans of medieval-adjacent genre properties in social media communities, etc. The second thing we can do is, in our own original and fan works, avoid tropes that have been influenced by some of these views, and give consumers a progressive alternative.

As a women’s history scholar at Berkeley, I’ve been approached by many reporters this month — each asking me to comment on what’s changed (or not) in our gendered society since Anita Hill’s allegations of sexual harassment against Clarence Thomas in 1991.
To their surprise, I raise the subject of bathrooms and lounges. These weren’t readily available to female senators in 1991. The construction of centrally-located restrooms for high ranking elected women, in 1993 and again in 2011, is perhaps one point of progress we can see.
When Hill gave her famous testimony in 1991, so few women were senators that no real provision had been made for a women’s room adjacent to the Senate floor. Men enjoyed such a convenience, but women were forced to leave and walk considerable distance for a comfort stop, which meant they risked missing the announcement of a roll call vote. The situation was the same for female House members, who actually had no bathroom at all on the first floor of the Capitol until 1962. In such ways, the very architecture of the Capitol reminded women that they were, at best, tolerated as adjuncts to the male members of government.
Are you some kind of graduate student?
The structural presumption that women would never be in the halls of power wasn’t limited to government. Just miles from the Capitol, I was told many times while I was teaching there, Georgetown University had to convert a broom closet into a women’s bathroom for its science classroom building. It had been constructed in a time when no one envisioned female undergraduates being a majority on campus — or excelling in STEM fields.
As a young research scholar at Harvard in 1991, I had access to women’s bathrooms, but experienced a chilly reception in at least one faculty lounge, where a male professor sputtered at me and asked if I was some kind of graduate student. When I flashed my faculty ID, he recovered with “Well, but you look so pretty.” This, I understood, was a compliment, but one insinuating that “real” female scholars were unattractive.
Similarly, the historic lack of bathrooms/locker rooms and showers for female athletes at many colleges mirrors the biases found in government and academia. During the 1970s, at the height of second-wave feminism, women on Yale’s crew team had no changing room boathouse, though the men’s team did. With nowhere to change from damp sportswear after workouts on the wintry Charles River, female rowers preparing for the Olympic Games caught pneumonia while seated on a freezing bus, waiting as the male crew team showered and warmed up.
Fed up, Yale rowers confronted their athletic director — topless. Across their bared, chilled chests was the reminder, “TITLE IX.”
Our society has much farther to go
Title IX law, part of the Education Acts of 1972, helped change some of the imbalances on college campuses, but many women then graduated into workplaces filled with unregulated harassment.
Anita Hill’s 1991 testimony, broadcast nationally at a time before Internet and social media gave most Americans access to government proceedings, showed America just how male-dominated our government appeared. A majority of men making critical legal decisions about women’s lived experiences suggested a system of patriarchy, not democracy. Emboldened to create change, more women than ever before ran for office and won in 1992, giving the Senate a new high of six women — with no accessible bathroom.
Finally, in 1993, a women’s restroom was built off the Senate floor, at the direction of Majority Leader George Mitchell (D-Maine.) Still, female Representatives on the House side did not get their own bathroom off the House floor for another 18 years—in 2011. Within two years it had to be doubled in size, a reflection of the dramatic gain in elected women.
I’m now teaching at Berkeley, where I have access to a new mothers’ lactation room should I require one, and I can say that much has changed. But while public life and institutions have gradually accommodated female bodies, our society has much farther to go in seeing, understanding, and believing the lived experiences which accompany those bodies.

Last year I read a post (which I can’t find anymore) about devotional tips to Frigg. The writer wrote a note at the top of the post stating that they would be referring to Frigg as “They”, since the Gods don’t adhere to our human binary of “male” and “female”. It was such a simple sentence, but it was such an impactful thing for me. I’d never thought of it that way. But to me, it made perfect sense. So I accepted it, and then never looked any deeper into it. Never thought further about what that would mean for me, or my craft.
That changed earlier this year. I was feeling a call to deepen the relation I have with the deities I am devoted to. Which led to me researching and redefining my bond with whom I then still called Horned One. As I wrote in an earlier post, I still very much saw Him as an archetype of the divine masculine. The God to complement the Goddess, which was a paradigm left over from my earlier wiccan-adjacent roots. It didn’t mesh with my earlier found beliefs that Gods are outside of our human gender structures. I couldn’t wrap my hear around it. Which meant one thing: research.
Because why does everything in western witchcraft practices have to adhere to a binary gender system? Why do we have a “divine feminine” and a “divine masculine” when it comes to our inner worlds? And further than that, why does seemingly everything in western witchcraft need to be gendered? Open any book on modern witchcraft and you’ll see gender assigned to everything. To the elements, to the days of the week, to crystals, to herbs, to planets, to runes, everything has a gender or gendered “energy” attached to it. I’ve found, especially in witchcraft and paganism, that when we want to figure out “why?” we need to ask: “where does it come from?”
It seems to start with the Greek philosopher Empedocles. He is the one who gave us the four elements that make up all matter: earth, air, fire and water. The elements are a big part of modern witchcraft, especially the wiccan traditions, or the traditions which have their roots in wicca. We call upon the elements to protect us when we cast a circle. We use the elements to bless and consecrate items. Just to name a few. Empedocles not only posited that all matter was made up out of these four elements, but he also linked them to the Gods Zeus, Hera, Nestis (Persephone) and Aidoneus (Hades). So we have two elements tied to a God, and two to a Goddess. This is where the belief that the elements are either “feminine” or “masculine” probably originates. It’s not a strange thought that this could have easily been stretched: if the elements are “feminine” or “masculine”, and things like crystals or herbs are associated with the elements, then they are also “feminine” or “masculine”.
Of course the influence of monotheistic religions can not be ignored. Our western society gets a lot of its views from Christianity. In the Christian bible God created Adam and Eve, one man and one woman. A strong binary where there is no room for deviation. It is also seen as an ideal to strive towards: a husband and wife, standing in the light of God, who together can create new life. This monotheistic view has been part of our western culture for millennia, which has influenced a lot of scholars, philosophers, artist, etc. Which in turn influences the information that we have access to now. Everything we know about our ancestors is written later, often by Christian scholars or even monks, who wrote from their (gender-binary and patriarchal) worldview.
Then of course we have the beginnings of our contemporary witchcraft: wicca and Gerald Gardner. In the wiccan faith a God and a Goddess are worshipped. Some believe them to be source of all life, others believe they are facets or avatars of a bigger force (Spirit, the All, etc.). The Triple Goddess stands for the phases of a woman’s life: the maiden, the mother and the crone. She also embodies the “feminine energies” such as nurturing, giving, sensual, loving, and wise. The Horned God is the masculine aspects, such as providing, protecting, strengthening, sexual, and also wise. Covens are led by a High Priest (HP) and a High Priestess (HPs), where in Gardner’s days they took part in a ritual called “the Hieros Gamos” or “the Great Rite”, where the HP and HPs engaged in sexual intercourse to raise power, or as part of an initiation rite. Because, as our tradition’s wiccan inspired ritual states:  “where the masculine and feminine are joined, spirit is born.” Nowadays this is mostly done symbolically with a chalice and an athame, luckily, since Gardner is known to have “asked” High Priestesses to step aside when they were no longer young and beautiful in his eyes, which… ew. The God and Goddess also complete a life cycle in the Wheel of the Year. The God impregnates the Goddess, after which he travels to the underworld and is born again from Her womb. Because of this, life will begin anew and nature will grow once more. Heterosexual procreation and that bond between man and woman is very important in the wiccan faith. The duality of male and female; and together they create life, is very ingrained into our modern, contemporary paganism because of this.
Then, we need to talk about Jung. In the first big wiccan revival in the ‘70s many prominent witches, like Janet and Steward Farrar, stepped back a bit from the ideas that the Gods were indeed outside of us, but instead incorporated Jungian philosophy into their faith. The Gods are then archetypes living deep in our subconsciousness, which we contact through prayer, spells and ritual. In that first revival this was a pretty common view of the world, which in turn, influenced a lot of books that were written in that time. One of Jung’s theories is about the Anima and the Animus. Jung stated that, much like the yin-yang symbol, every woman had a bit of masculinity in her unconscious, called the Animus. And that the man had a bit of femininity in his unconscious, called the Anima. If the Animus or Anima was not recognized properly, it could have negative repercussions for the person in question. That part of the subconscious would then dictate the way the person would react in certain situations. For example, a woman acting in a way we would normally “expect” (back then) from a man, so through means of violence and aggression. So an integration, a joining from both the feminine and the masculine inside us is needed to become whole and to become a complete, spiritual being (sounds familiar, no?)
Last but not least, we have feminism. Contemporary witchcraft and paganism gained a lot of popularity in those same ‘70s, as well as the ‘60s, by being more Goddess oriented. Many of us, even now, come from the monotheistic religions which heavily centre on the divine masculine, without giving a female counterpart in that. Many of those religions are also often oppressive and discriminatory when it comes to the treatment of women. For many women witchcraft and paganism gives therefore a sense of freedom and equality not experienced before. Witchcraft is also the craft of the marginalized, protects those who aren’t in a position to protect themselves and are an enormous source of empowerment for many. With the arrival of Dianic wicca, a branch of wicca focussed solely on the Goddess, the Goddess movement within wicca and later witchcraft grew. Many were drawn to a path that celebrated women, and all that this entailed. This meant that the “divine feminine” became more and more important. The womb being the source of all creative power in the universe. The yoni being something not to be ashamed of, but instead something to be proud of and to take pride in. (I will talk about my views on all of this in a later post) An emphasis on sisterhood and the sacred bond we all share through the ancient mothers.
I believe all of this influenced and shaped the way we see gender when it comes to witchcraft and paganism. This all contributed in gender having the heavy influence that we see now. So now we know where it comes from… now what? Well, join me next time as I try to figure that out.

People What Aint From Round Here Is The Problem...
So I just watched Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood and I have THOUGHTS:
Ive read a few reviews&ruminations on this film at this point and I can’t believe that none of them got(or at least, mentioned explicitly) the primary thesis of this movie, spcl given that Tarentino flatly states it out the mouth of his primary protagonist within, like, the first 15-20mins of the film: “...most important thing in this town is when you’re making money you buy a house in town. You don’t rent... Hollywood real estate means you live here. You’re not just visiting, not just passing through. You fuckin live here.” i.e., the most important thing in Hollywood, to Hollywood, is the people FROM Hollywood; Everyone else is just a filthy, trouble-making tourist or profiteer who is “Passing Through” and “Doesnt Get It” and  “Is Fucking It Up”(It being the film industry), and probably “Secretly Hates Movies”. There are places and aspects of this movie that are basically a Nativist Angeleno rant, written by a life-long Angeleno film-nerd-turned-film-maker, against Hollywood’s critics(and his critics which he just totally conflates with the former), and probably non-Angelenos(and non-Californians?) in general.
There are two ways to read this thesis: Straight and Subverted/Satirized.
The evidence for reading it straight is pretty plentiful. Lots of reviews have puzzled at where the line connecting the constant hippie-bashing, the weird focus on knocking Polanski’s Polishness & preference for shooting in London, and the inexplicable pot-shot at Bruce Lee is, and I think this is it. “The Hippies” are repeatedly presented as a corrupting force: digging through trash, living in squalourous filth at the Spahn Ranch dragging members of “Old Hollywood” like its owner into it with them, selling drugs, and using sex to “control” men. And attached to this is presenting “The Hippies” as foreign; not only from another place, but refusing to assimilate with the LA way of life and hostile to it. The Manson family are the only explicitly identified “Hippies” in the film(other than, possibly, the one who sells Cliff an acid cig). The only “positive” portrayals of Bruce Lee in the film are silent ones of him teaching anglos kung fu, which has some fairly obvs and well-understood Implications.
But there’s also good evidence for reading it as subverted and satirized. Both Tate and Dalton are NOT from California, let alone LA, and Booth’s origins are left unclear. Dalton’s the only one of them explicitly id’d as being from elsewhere(Missouri), but Tate’s easy to google and she was a military kid who grew up all over the place. When Dalton returns from Italy, that sequence and his look in it are VERY reminiscent of the scenes introducing Polanski at the beginning of the film. The side-characters around Tate, perennially shown in a positive light, are also non-Angelenos. Doing Spaghetti Westerns revitalizes Dalton’s career, despite his disdain for Italian cinema. Tate and her crew, while not explicitly ID’d as “Hippies” and often shown in Mod and other fashion styles, are also presented in “Hippie” fashion, shown listening to “Hippie” music, smoking the “Hippie” Reefer(Im sorry, but Comedy Demanded this phrasing and I am Devout u_u), and implied to be living a polyamorous “Hippie” life.
It really is difficult for me to say which predominates. On the one entirely metaphorical hand, the ways in which Dalton’s Angeleno chauvinism are subverted and mocked are fairly obvs, but on the other emh, the film is FILLED with LITERALLY GLOWING nostalgia for this pre-Hippy, pre-Lefty, pre-70s, Conservative and Republican California&Los Angeles. Dalton’s focus on property-ownership&the film industry in the opening thesis could easily be seen as resolving these subversive contradictions to allow for a straight read(ie: Tate, Booth, and Dalton are “Hollywood People” who’ve both bought real-estate in LA, and who’ve grown up in film or film-adjacent fields and choose to center their adult lives in the film industry). So much, in fact, that I kinda started to wonder abt QT’s politics while watching it. And, if it WAS satirical, then what’s the point of the knock to Bruce Lee and focusing criticisms of Polanski on his Polishness and shooting in London? Is that just meant to characterize Dalton and Booth as nativists and racists?
It really cannot be said enough that there are REALLY MORE APPROPRIATE CRITICISMS to make of Polanski than 1)begin Polish, 2)possessing boyish effeminacy, and 3)preferring to shoot movies in London instead of LA. Which are this movie’s only problems with him(though it also takes the time to show him bitchily smoking a cigarette in an evening gown while being rude to a dog). Obvsl I dont object to villainizing an ACTUAL REAL LIFE VILLAIN like this shitstain, but I DO object to being asked(albeit gently) to participate in this film’s understated nationalist bigotry.
It’s possible that Cliff’s turning Pussycat down during the drive to the ranch was intended to be this but I highly doubt it. And if it was it’d be misrepresenting Polanski’s misdeeds enormously, considering that Pussycat, the too-young girl, is the sexual instigator in this film. Polanski liked to manipulate, drug, and rape underaged girls(he pulled the same shit with models in Europe before getting busted for it in LA, btw, then continued doing it after fleeing back to Europe); really not the same situation.
There’s another irony in that, while the film goes out of its way to call Polanski “boyish” and imply that makes him feminine and that this is Bad, there’s also a subtle under-current that... Tarentino sees himself in his youth the same way? He’s certainly never been short like Polanski and Jay Sebring are/were, QT’s 6 1, but the actors he cast to play them and the description made of the pair in-film are more than a bit reminiscent of how Tarentino looked&was discussed in the press back in the 90s when he was starting out. AAAaaand the film explicitly calls that Tate’s “Type”; leaving me with the question: would Tarentino be able to stop himself from implying a dead starlet would have been attracted to him? I leave the answer to your imaginations, Dear Readers u_u
Having said all that it IS a really good film, which I liked, I dont think it’d be very hard to set aside this political stuff while watching, the driving sequences are especially emotive&exhilarating, and there’s some seriously great acting in it. IDK if I’d say I liked it more than the recent Emma movie, tho.
I feel like each of the trio, Tate, Dalton, and Booth, were meant to symbolically Embody LA/Hollywood/California? Like Pitt especially seemed to be channeling movie characters and CJ from GTA: San Andreas throughout his performance, while I couldnt help but think of Ronald Reagan watching DiCaprio(spcl given the character’s likely politics). So there’s this sense in which the film is a fantasy of “Old Hollywood”, embodied by these three, Vanquishing its “Enemies”, represented by The Hippies(moralizing, pretentious, gross leftist) and potentially Polanski&Lee(foreign film ppl who refuse to integrate into the LA scene). Again, given the political history of Cali after this era, this embodiment raises some questions for me abt the film and QT’s politics(particularly in re: misogyny and feminism).
Also DiCaprio is totally going to get pitched a Reagan biopic off of this role and I sincerely hope he has the good sense to turn that shit the fuck down.
Circling back to the ranting at his critics, this movie was definitely and consciously a response to them. Like: up until the last 5-15 minutes of the film, and aside from a handful of too-lingering too fetishistic too on-the-nose creep shots of the female cast that Tarentino simply could not stop himself from making, OUATiH is precisely the sort of “Serious” film Tarentino’s critics have been saying he should make for decades now(of course he did Jackie Brown, which was that and which he blew Completely out of the park). And then there’s that bloody, gross-out, exploitation-movie ending. I dont actually think it was as bad as many critics were saying it was? For some reason I was thinking there was gonna be a massacre of the ENTIRE Manson family, which would have been totally out of left-field. But it WAS clearly a stinger of a major tone-shift thrown in as a Fuck You to the ppl who’ve called out his violent and exploitative preferences throughout the years. As for me I generally like his movies and think he’s a great filmmaker but he absolutely does go too far sometimes.
Rick Dalton, in an evening-gown, with a mixer full of iced-margarita in one hand, getting all up in the face of the driver of a loud exhaust-spewing jalope in his PRIVATE STREET was TOTALLY Tarentino himself :| By which I mean NOT ONLY that That’s ABSOLUTELY the sort of cameo he would have given himself 30 years ago and if it made any sort of sense at all in the film(which here it wouldnt have, obvsl), BUT ALSO that I feel 94% confident that Tarentino has actually done that at least once in his lifetime :| :|
I think the monologue&interactions T gives Bruce Lee leading up to the fight were probably more insulting to him than the fight itself. Contrary to popular discussion, it isn’t Pitt’s character totally trashing Lee, he gets in one good throw after Lee repeats a successful attack at his request(which I doubt Lee would have ever done from what little I know about him; not being predictable in a fight was his whole Deal), but rather an even duel between them(most of the fight is just the two blocking each others’ attacks). I dont think the film was trying to say “Lee was full of hot-air”, if it wanted to say that it’d have shown him getting trounced instead of showing him knock Booth down then trade him blow for blow, but more “Lee was pretty arrogant and a bit pretentious”.

Nellie Gayle: How do you live a legacy, honor a history, that's equally heartbreaking and triumphant? Jamila Woods brings brightness and joy to her reflections on African American history in the United States, without ignoring the trauma implicit in its story. "Your crown has been bought and paid for. All you have to do is put in on your head" the video quotes from Baldwin. Much like the author she named the track after, Woods will not gloss over the daily suffering and indignities of white supremacy in the US. But also like Baldwin, she's an optimist who derives happiness and hardwon joy from a history of resistance. So long as there is a vibrant culture and community whose stories deserve to be celebrated (not just told), Woods will literally sing its praises with melodies reminiscent of Bill Withers - upbeat, sunny, and heartfelt. Another Baldwin quote for Woods, one that deserves to be framed & hung up on bedroom walls in times like these: "To be a pessimist means that you have agreed that human life is an academic matter, so I'm forced to be an optimist. I'm forced to believe that we can survive whatever we must survive." [9]
Nortey Dowuona: A warm, dreamlike roll of piano chords swirl with the wind as a loping bass limps alongside dribbling drums as warm bursts of horns drift past Jamila, who gently stirs the cauldron, which bubbles warmly as the kids gather around in cautious excitement. [9]
Kylo Nocom: "BALDWIN" is a perfect explanation of how the idea of (argh!) optimistic and loving resistance can (often justifiably) feel like a pointless endeavour, especially when applied to the struggles of black Americans. Poetic descriptions of gentrification, police brutality, and non-black inaction are painfully outlined, betraying a central exhaustion that lies in Jamila's doubts of her friends' and icons' messages of hope. Jamila's croon also reads as tired, perhaps unintentionally, but with the help of some tasteful vocal accompaniment the sincerity beneath her uneasiness is allowed to flourish. Despite the underlying hesitance, "BALDWIN" is ultimately inspired by a real desire to see love as a means towards building community. As for Nico Segal, it seems he was just invited to aim at my weakness towards percussive horn blasts, punctuating the lines that seem to resonate the most powerfully: "we don't go out, can't wish us away." [9]
Joshua Lu: Utterly sublime and warm, like the aural equivalent of a hazy summertime sunset, which is startling for a song with this subject matter. "BALDWIN" touches on the different ways racism manifests, bringing up not just images of black fathers dead on the streets and white women clutching their purses, but also referencing the "casual violence" in white speech and white silence. It's subtly damning, and Jamila sounds too weary to accept the solution she's been offered, to extend love to the people who will never reciprocate it. The song ends uncertainly, hanging on a cryptic line and an unsatisfying melody, as if daring the listener to provide their own resolution. [8]
Joshua Copperman: "BALDWIN" struggles with its namesake's theory that "you must accept them with love" - 'them' referring to white people - "for these innocent people have no other hope." How is love even possible, even in Woods' definition of love, with the aggressions both macro (police brutality) and micro (purse-clutching) addressed in the lyrics? Obviously, there aren't easy answers, but Woods' educated guess on surviving is not just resilience, but community. That chorus starts with "all my friends" for a reason. It's not quite as anarchic as "You can tell your deity I'm alright/Wake up in the bed, call me Jesus Christ," but it's the same eventual conclusion. Instead of defying religion, Woods defies the expectation of being respectable. That's the interesting thing about this beat too, from Slot-A, mixing more traditional R&B instrumentation like Rhodes piano and canned synth pads with trap snares and horn stabs. Will Adams: So many (usually white) musicians handle the topic of racism as deftly as if it were a hot potato slathered in grease. Jamila Woods cuts to the core in a single verse, addressing police brutality, gentrification and purse-clutching casual racism. The arc of the song is balancing that anger with weariness of those who preach civility in the face of hate. If that all sounds a bit too down, Nico Segal's punctuation in the form of bright horn stabs are there to keep the message alive and resonant. [7]
Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: Not the most transcendent piece on LEGACY! LEGACY! (see "BASQUIAT"), but a close competitor. The jazzy production sets the groove well, and the stabs of Nico Segal's horns and Gospel-adjacent choirs fill the space beautifully. But it's Jamila herself who takes "Baldwin" from something pleasant to something glorious. She bridges romance, protest, and memory like no one else can, melding them with her sweet, pointed voice into the album's best demonstration of its thesis. [9]
Joshua Minsoo Kim: "BALDWIN" is a song that finds Jamila Woods detailing the outright, inescapable racism that occurs against Blacks every day. In referencing James Baldwin, she makes clear how such fear and hatred-fueled actions have persisted to the present day. But what makes this so fascinating a song is that Woods muddies the waters; she spends a bit of time wrestling with the positivity that Baldwin espoused throughout his lifetime, finding herself conflicted by the effectiveness of such praxis. In a way, listening to this feels like a legitimate Sermon on the Mount moment, where "lov[ing] your enemy and pray[ing] for those who persecute you" comes as a shocking command instead of a spoonfed Sunday School lesson. Miraculously, "BALDWIN" doesn't end up feeling knotty and tense, but overwhelmingly triumphant. You can sense it in the gospel choir and Nico Segal's horns, but it's Woods's own silk-smooth vocals and circuitous melodies that announce her impossible serenity. Has she found truth in such ostensible cognitive dissonance, or is she too elated to be bothered by this disagreement? That internal struggle finds no conclusion here, but Woods transcends it all by being an inspiration herself. She embodies something that Baldwin had written to his nephew in 1962--a specific instruction that feels ever necessary today: "You don't be afraid." [7]
Iris Xie: With such a clear, gentle series of asks here, you would have to have an adherence to bigotry, or at least avoiding the discomfort of examining your own internalized anti-Black biases, in order to avoid considering what Woods is saying here. I think about this a lot as a queer Asian American, what my responsibility is to the project of helping not contribute and help demolish the project of anti-Blackness as enacted by white supremacist institutions and those who are complicit and facilitate them, especially when I see the amount of pain in both the news and what my friends experience. The line of "All my friends / Been readin' the books / readin' the books you ain't read" cuts deep for me especially, because I have an Bachelor's degree in Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies, which is an enormous amount of privilege in itself to receive and is due to countless activist histories that made that possible. It also made me think of the sheer amount of books about queer Black feminism that I genuinely feel I've barely scratched the surface of understanding, but am always in awe of the brilliance exuding forth. All of it is already written here for anyone to read, with new scholarship and articles and media produced all the time to help digest and made accessible for the rest of us. The loveliness of this song is that in its quiet neo-soul tempos, with the subtle snares, synths, and horns, results in a vibe she is secure in itself and asks the listener to move towards Woods. Black activists have put together the work and articulated these for decades, for any of us to read. The least we can do is listen and pay attention, as a complete bare minimum. [7]
