Do you think Dirk saying that he doesn't like to label himself as gay means he has internalized homophobia? Or does he really just don't like to put labels on himself? I've seen ppl saying it's homophobia but there's ppl in real life that don't feel comfortable with labels so I'm a bit confused honestly, cus we are talking about Dirk and he's... Dirk after all

Easy answer: Dirk is Gay.

Prolonged answer: I think it's kinda weird how some fandom discussion around "Dirk dodging the label in One pesterlog" has largely spiraled way outside of its original context to be talked about in a vacuum, especially when that context is crucial to understanding what is actually being said, AKA — it belongs to a deeply awkward conversation between Dirk and Roxy. One of Many they are implied to have had about the subject of Roxy's sustained, unwelcome, and oft drunken advances towards Dirk (& his splinters).

I'm going to reproduce it plus another bit of text down below, for the sake of comparison.

Now that we've been reacquainted with how and where that sentiment is expressed, let's try to break down what Dirk is doing here.

He is not receptive to Roxy's early advances, and spends most of the 'intro' for this conversation (not pictured) ignoring when Roxy flirts with him, until she gets upset at how 'boring' he is being right now.

Dirk is the one compelled to apologize.

He proceeds to shut the scenario down as an unwanted probability, eliciting further guilt-babbling from Roxy over how Dirk never wants to play along with the perfect traditional family fantasy, until she finally blows up and says it's because he's gay.

"I mean, yeah, that's what I thought."

Dirk, rather than saying I Am Not Gay, since he looooooves changing a conversational subject, claims that "Gay" is not entirely historically appropriate for this situation, given the non-negligible passage of time and the wildly dystopic circumstances* they find themselves in.

Dirk reassures Roxy he does still care about her.

Dirk is absolutely terrified of a similarly inclined (and intoxicated) Roxy up close. This is the most exclamations he's ever used.

Now, *These circumstances? The loss of 99% of the human race, including their society, customs, culture, and prejudices. (ALLEGEDLY.) It's important to remember that from Dirk and Roxy's side of the timetable, troll culture has been pushed as "the norm" for actual fucking centuries. HIC tried to recreate the caste system by artificially coloring human blood, leading to the death of billions. Faygo came out of the water tap, not water. Troll slang was incorporated into the English language. Humans ceased to organically reproduce. They were actively Discouraged from reproducing, since that's not something HIC could have total genetic control over; rendering traditional marriage and the concept of the nuclear family pointless.

You could also argue that same-gender relationships are not uncommon in Alternia, making "gay" altogether unnecessary by proxy, and that's true! But my point is this one: any union (or at least our society's holy concept of it) between straightie humans would be by definition undesirable under HIC's rule, too. She is the church, the president and the governing body. The population is only as good as they are assets for her to do whatever she wants with, including mass murder.

But wait! While that tracks… Roxy clearly still holds onto very 'conservative' definitions of romance for most of Homestuck. We see this multiple times. Dirk, as proved in conversations with Jake, uses 'gay' as an ironic pejorative. Suddenly it's not Historically Inaccurate anymore, Jake's interests are just gay.

Does this mean the context above is basically worthless, since they don't seem to have internalized it? No.

What must be kept in mind is this: Dirk and Roxy's only "active" link to de facto humanity is our society as it was in the early 2010's. Those glimpses they get by talking with jane and jake. They have all that dystopic context, yes, but the reality that seems the most "unfucked" to them for a grand majority of their lives are the halcyon years before the Condesce's rise to power: back when weed was illegal, BlogSpot was popular, movies sucked, MTV was still a hip channel, and gay generally meant something real bad. The wave of homophobia as a punchline or fear mongering tactic was at THE HEIGHTS. Marriage equality was a hot debate topic. Those were the dayz.

Dirk is keenly aware of the taboo implication the word "Gay" as a self-denomination carries. He's no dummy. But he's rarely direct with his intentions either. He's slippery as a bar of soap. (He's never "straight about his feelings", if you prefer.) And for a guy that cares so much about his reputation and maintaining a curated sense of utter coolness, he wants to avoid outing himself as any sort of weirdo no matter the cost.

But that's not all. I think the gravity of just how much Dirk believes he *owes* Roxy simply for existing as the last human in the same timeframe as her is a severely underplayed aspect of Dirk's core character, together with how much he tries to avoid her sexual advances only to end up feeling like absolute shit over it, because — if they truly are the last people on god's blighted earth, isn't he being "selfish" and "irrational" about not feeling shit for Roxy, in the grand scale of things? Is Roxy not his only friend in tangible reality, even if he avoids the mere suggestion of visiting her? Even if she gets black-out drunk and tries to push him into indulging her, regardless of how many times he's already said no?

(Spend enough time here and you realize how it directly mirrors the jane/jake experience.)

Dirk cares a lot about each and every one of his friends.

He pointedly adapts his speech based on whichever one of them he's talking to in an effort to express that investment. May it be reassuring Jane, fooling around with Jake, or trying to prevent Roxy from falling into a total catatonic doom-spiral; he avoids telling them anything that would be too crushing to hear. That's not what he's trying to do here. Not to say that he isn't bitchy sometimes, but that’s far from the central thing he does. The Epilogues have retroactively led people to believe that Dirk abhors and despises every single person he's ever been close to before (god forbid) LIKING them, and I think buying too much into that assumption ignores the foundations of his canon text, as well as the central motivation behind 99% of his actions in the story. This is the guy that grew up on Friendship Is Magic, has a picture of rainbow dash shamefully glued to one wall and a rainbow poster of Jake's symbol stapled to another, and everything he does is a little cringe attempt to demonstrate his worth by showing how much he cares about people, even when he's punching his actual feelings down instead of up and saying them.

Which brings us back to the load-bearing part of this question: Admitting to Roxy that there is absolutely no fucking way he will ever agree to having her babbys because he is gay is precisely the opposite of what Dirk wants to say, if his intention isn't pulverizing her. So he doesn't. And his worry on this regard is such that it prevents Dirk from even telling Roxy that he does love her, in the platonic sense, as a friend and hell-earth survivor, because he knows that specificity is what that would disappoint her greatly. (He only ever confesses this to Jane, on the death slabs.)

But also I think this is a really funny visual of Dirk's relationship with the word gay, to put statements into perspective:

Okay, so. You expressed a slight amount of interest in what I was saying earlier, so I’m gonna infodump. :)

The BITE model is an acronym used to describe the methods of control cults, authoritarian leaders, etc. use to brainwash people. It stands for Behavior, Information, Thoughts, and Emotions. Behavioral control includes most of the physical aspects, such as regulating what a person does, who they interact with, what they wear, their general setting, etc. It also includes things like kidnapping, use of corporal punishment, separation of families, and threat of murder. Information relates to ways in which groups might control what information their members have access to, by physically blocking off access to outside sources, dismissing outside sources as evil/untrustworthy/part of “the other side’s attempt to trick/corrupt you,” misusing outside sources, limiting access to information based on position within the group, and/or systematically lying to members of the group. It also includes using members’ personal information against them. Thought control is basically the group’s way of forcing its members to accept its beliefs as truth. It includes banning questioning the leader and/or their judgement, discouraging critical thinking and rational analysis, labeling other ideologies as evil, labeling thoughts that deviate from the group’s beliefs as evil, restricting use of language so as to limit meaningful discussion of complex topics, and creating an “us vs. them” mentality. It also includes changing a person’s name, use of memory-altering or creation (basically if someone’s memory of something is hazy, or they don’t remember it, and you tell them it happened a certain way enough, they’ll actually start to remember it like that), use of certain hypnotic techniques (yes, this is real), and teaching thought stopping techniques (singing, chanting, praying, meditation, denial, rationalization, wishful thinking, etc.) to shut down critical thinking and doubt. Emotional control includes instilling emotions such as fear or guilt, as well as threatening terrible consequences, such as killing friends and family members, if someone tries to leave.

Additionally, ATUS (which stands for And the universe shifts) builds on the end of Grian’s time on Evo, which is the server that he was on b4 Hermitcraft. Basically, on Evo, there were these beings called Watchers that left the players weird hints and gifts and stuff, but their actions could be interpreted a number of ways. Either they were mostly benevolent, if a bit mischievous/chaotic in their methods, and were telling the truth about testing the players, or they were basically just messing with them for their own amusement. In Grian’s last Evo episode, all the players got their gear together and went to go find an end portal and fight the ender dragon. When they jumped in the portal, they all got separated and each had to fight the dragon alone. Somehow, probably using a data pack or video editing or something, they managed to switch out the end credits so that it was a conversation about the Evo ppl between the two watchers (who are just called Watcher 1 and Watcher 2). At the end, they say that Grian is going to have to come with them. Grian (who is labeled as Watcher 3) says his goodbyes and thank yous and agrees to go with and then... well, we don’t actually know what. Like with everything else the Watchers have done, this could be interpreted multiple ways; it could be a benevolent gift, an offer to essentially ascend to godhood, or it could be a kidnapping. It’s kinda hard to tell, since the wording is vague and mostly without a clear tone in its text format. ATUS takes the “malevolent Watchers kidnapped Grian” idea and runs with it. The story is set after Grian escapes the Watchers to Hermitcraft, and covers how they end up finding him again and all the events that follow. Throughout the story itself and several flashbacks, we do see the Watchers using the BITE model to manipulate Grian into coming back to/staying with them.

Bakugo X reader, Bakugo x Setsuna

Angst, mild language

Word count: 1,857

Idea: Reader ask Bakugo “Do you like/love her?” Three different times. (idea loosely based from song Do you love her by Jessie Reyez)

First fic ever so like i dunno what i am doing. Also I felt like he fit in for this idea (him or hawks) 😣hopefully ppl enjoy it

You watch as he is carefree around her, laughing so carelessly as you sit alone eating lunch. You begin to feel insecure as you notice he isn’t like that with you, considering you and him are together. He doesn’t seem to notice that you’re alone, already eating. But after a while he turns around and as he sees you his smile falters for a millisecond. You notice the falter and frown slightly before plastering a smile as he looks at you, he scoffs and walks towards your table and sits in front of you.

“What’s wrong with you now?”

You look at him analyzing his behavior and how it changed so quickly from carefree to annoyed.

“Well?! Aren’t you going to answer me??”

“Do you like her?” You blurt out and regret it as soon as he scowls.

“Are you fucking serious? I am stuck with you for fucks sakes! Tch,” He looks pissed, causing you to feel bad for insinuating him liking someone else.

“Sorry, I don’t know why I asked that I trust you completely” you say quietly, finishing up your meal. You get up and walk back to the classroom. As your classmates finish up their meals they begin flowing back into the class room and you notice Bakugo is a couple of minutes late. He looks at you and quickly looks away when he enters. You don’t think much because you have become used to him being cold.

As a couple of days go by from the day you asked him that question you notice he gives you more attention and isn’t quite as rude, almost becoming the guy he was when you first started dating. You didn’t think much of it other than being happy he is acting “normal” again. You begin to notice he is jittery and cautious near lunch time. With that you begin noticing how he only acts like that whenever Setsuna is near. It breaks you ever so slightly and makes you want to know why he is acting like that.

What you don’t know is that when you left that day Setsuna walks over to Bakugo and he becomes carefree again, so much to the point where he found himself alone with her outside making out. He feels on cloud nine but it diminishes when he remembers he is still with you. He breaks the kiss and sprints back to class. As he walks in class and spots you he begins to feel guilty and looks away. After that day he continued to feel guilty and he thought that being nice to you would remove the guilt.

After a week from noticing his strange behavior you cannot take it anymore and walk to his dorm. As you knock on the door and ask him about it, Denki walks by and says “Hey, just the gal I am looking for! Do you want to make some cookies with me?” You are about to say you couldn’t right now but him almost sensing a no from you makes puppy eyes and with that you give in.

“Sure, what kind do you wanna make?”

He contemplates and after a while says, “I dunno I actually didn’t think this far ahead also I don’t know how to bake but what about those round ones with the brown spots in them,” You look at him trying and failing to hold back a laughter, “Denki,,,, Do you mean Chocolate Chip cookies?”

“Yeah those ones!” He looks sheepishly at you.

“Alright come on.”

*in the kitchen area*

“How the heck did you get covered in flower, Denki?” You look at him as the flour cloud disappears.

“I- I don’t know one minute I was measuring the flour then next minute it somehow ends up everywhere”

*30 minutes later*

“Whew, I’m so proud of these cookies”

“Yeah apart from the flour situation these seem to turn out good.”

You both look down towards to cookies and each other and laugh softly. The class begins to come down to see where the smell of cookies is coming from and see both of you standing there proud of your cookies. As you offer everyone cookies you notice this was the most pure and fun activity you have done with someone, making you remember of Bakugo’s suspicious behavior. You excuse yourself as you make your way up to his room. You look towards his door and hold your breath as you knock.

“Who is it?” He yells out angrily.

“Its me.” You say loud enough for him to hear. As he opens the door he looks annoyed but lets you in. You walk in and stand there for a minute contemplating if you were overthinking his behavior but get startled by his voice.

“What do you want?” He says in an annoyed voice.

You feel discouraged but quietly say “Why are you acting weird...”

Silence feels the room but he finally speaks up, “What the hell are you going on about?”

“I’m talking about how you for some weird reason are acting kind, but you are also acting jitterish and cautious. Especially whenever Setsuna is around.”

He did not think you would catch on the him acting differently so instead of telling the truth he becomes defensive, “What the hell do you mean I’m acting kind? You’re my girlfriend I’m suppose to be nice to you! I am not acting weird, its just your insecure ass who wants to assume I’m cheating on you! I’m stuck with you aren’t I why would I cheat! Me and Setsuna are friends. I don’t have to just hang out with your clingy ass everyday just because we date” At his outburst you feel you’re heart break even more. “I just want to know one more thing,” He looks at you even more annoyed, “What now?”

“Do you like her?”

He hesitates before answering cautiously

“...No.”

As he looks into you’re eyes he sees that they were filled with an immense sadness. He regrets not answering quickly, He regrets that he doesn’t love you as much anymore he regrets even falling for Setsuna.

You look at him and say “If you don’t why did you hesitate? Why do you keep hiding things from me?! I really cant right now, I feel like we need to take a break.” By the end of that sentence your voice breaks slightly and Bakugo notices. He notices you restraining yourself from crying, from showing any type of weakness, something he’s only seen you do with someone you could no longer trust, he sees you building walls around your emotions again like the ones he knocked down when he first met you. Except this time the walls were being put up because of him. After a while of trying not to show any emotion he says,

“Fine, do whatever the hell you want. Its not like I need you anyways.”

You look at him and finally after a long time you leave as a single tear falls.

After you left Bakugo punches his wall while screaming so loud its a surprise no one heard him. You walk to your room and fall to your bed crying. The hesitation he did before answering was all the evidence you needed to know he loves her now.

Downstairs, Denki notices you aren’t around so he saves the last cookie for you. He walks up to your room and knocks lightly. You hear the knock and softly ask “Who is it?”

“It’s me Denki”

“Come in” You quickly wipe your tears and sit up. He walks in and notices your red eyes and begins to worry, “What happened? Why are you crying?”

You look at him as he worries you hesitantly say, “Bakugo and I are taking a break from each other...” He looks at you with a soft look and after a while he says, “Oh y/n, I’m sorry... Whenever you want to tell me why I will be here but I wont pressure you to tell me. Brought you a cookie so you feel better. If you want we can also watch some Netflix to forget for a while?” You sniff softly, “Thank you so much Denki. You’re a great friend.” Denki whispers “Yeah friends”

You scoot over so he can sit and begin to binge watch movies.

As days go by Bakugo thinks over on how he fucked up. He thought of different ways to make it up to you but always became distracted by Setsuna. He was infatuated by her and couldn’t stop thinking of her. He got to the point where he completely stop thinking of ways to get you back. He was so preoccupied with Setsuna he just decided to confront you no plans no ideas.

You begin to feel better, especially with Denki cheering you up. Even others tried helping, that girls made a girls night one night, Iida would just give you facts and ideas on how to act professionally during a break up making you giggle, Kirishima and Izuku would make small jokes here in there but izuku would always stutter slightly because he still getting used to talking to girls, heck even Shoto tried cheering you up by attempting to make you a small cat ice sculpture using his power but kinda failed making it look wonky. You stopped thinking of your break up and bakugo in general. You did notice every once in a while that he was usually with Setsuna.

After a couple of weeks of bliss, you hear a knock. You open the door thinking its Denki and see Bakugo standing there your smile drops and turns into a scowl. As you begin to shut the door he sticks his foot in causing the door to not close. You sigh and open it up again.

“What do you want Bakugo?”

“I came here to talk and get you back.”

You look at him in disbelief, “I thought you didn’t need me anyways?”

He looks startled at your words but answers, “I didn’t mean that y/n. I am sorry for the pain I caused you! I cant bear to live knowing I hurt you.”

“So you just want me to forgive you so you don’t feel guilty?” You ask disinterested in what he said. “No I really am sorry I was just caught up with Setsuna that I didn’t realize you’re the one for me.”

“Really? Weren’t you just yesterday hugging and holding hands with her?”

“I- that doesn’t mean anything to me! Only you! I only care for you” He says insistingly trying to convince not you but himself. He continues to ramble on about how much he wants you that he doesn’t here you when you speak, “I only have one thing I want to ask you and I hope you answer honestly this time.”

“Do you love her?”

“-want— YES-“ He cuts himself off and widens his eyes when he realizes his mistake. This was not how he planned his confrontation to go. You look at him with sorrow in your eyes and shed some tears.

“I knew it.” Was all you could say.

I feel discourage due to the lack of interest in my guild. Maybe hearing some guild stories will reignite my confidence. Thought I'd ask, how long did it take you all to get up and running? Was there immediate attraction? Or did it take time for people to warm up to the idea of the Sunguard?

I thought about leaving this question for Felthier as he is the GM, but I think I might be able to give you a unique insight from the perspective of someone who watched the formation of the guild from afar, its initial hiccups, and eventually went on to join the guild, become an officer, and marry Felthier IRL.

So let me tell you the story of the Sunguard as I know it.

When the Sunguard was formed in WotLK era under Tendael’s leadership, I was an officer in a guild called House Silvacce. Although at this point in time Silvacce wasn’t as heavily involved in the community as it used to be, it did still keep tabs on the guilds on Moon Guard and something of the 2007-2008 Moon Guard RP elitist mindset.

I remember the earliest days of the Sunguard from the perspective of Silvacce - Sunguard had some RPers (their names are long forgotten to me now) that would always skulk around Murder Row in SMC and I remember Silvacce ppl would make fun of them. TBH, I remember associating the guild name Sunguard with being bad.

Then somewhere down the line, the Sunguard went through a shake-up where half the guild left to form another guild called Dominion of the Sun, leaving the Sunguard in Felthier’s hands.

What I remember of Felthier in this time is from someone that I used to call a friend who knew him and would talk about him in a positive light. From these social circles I was persuaded to give Sunguard a chance - right as my time in Silvacce was coming to an end.

Finally in October 2011, I applied with @forever-afk and joined the Sunguard. I’m willing to admit my initial impression might have been biased because I “had an in” via the aforementioned social circles, which ended up being a chunk of the Sunguard’s then officer core. However, the biggest thing that became apparent to me was that the Sunguard was a wholly different atmosphere from Silvacce. I had come out of a tiny guild that had essentially shut me out of its clique and into one that had a much more relaxed atmosphere. I came to realize that what Silvacce had previously shit on wasn’t a collection of bad RPers but people who felt comfortable enough with each other and the guild to write things that in this time in Moon Guard were considered mary sue by elitist RPers but in reality were exciting stories. Basically back in these days if you roleplayed anything but a peasant farmer, you were a mary sue. So this guild full of soldiers and heroes was to me, narratively way cooler.

Also I thought Felthier’s player was hot but more on that later.

There was still some rivalry between Dominion of the Sun and Sunguard in these days, but I’d say the overall community involvement and Horde RP scene was thriving. A bunch of guilds with the TSG/DotS theme of blood elf paramilitary cropped up and Rp PvP was a big storytelling means on the server.

When MoP came, sharding came with it and royally fucked RP PvP. IIRC the Battle of Kun Lai was the last huge server RP-PvP battle. Then the WoW narrative started moving away from the Alliance-Horde conflict as well.

As a result, the Sunguard was left with a massive storytelling void. So we turned to /roll events. This is where Sunguard’s narrative power really started to pick up, imo. But the trade off was that the community became more insular. As we turned our focus more in on ourselves and the Sunguard’s story, there was less opportunity to involve the community.

But people liked the narrative. Tons of people joined the guild and the numbers just kept on growing. As we grew bigger, Felthier refined our roll system from haphazard in game roll events with raid target markers for enemies to an actual game on Roll20. (with inspiration from Blood of Lordaeron, could not have done it without them)

The guild saw its hiccups here and there with drama, but the bulk of that stopped when a handful of the guild core sharded off again (this time over a conflict of personalities and choices in the roll20 direction) on the eve of WoD. The people who remained grew closer and the leadership changed. Although Felthier remained the guild leader, there were opportunities for several new officers to rise to the table (myself among them) and with this came new ideas for management. We pushed full steam ahead with the Roll20 narrative and with WOD being such a shitty expansion, had a massive influx of people looking for good storytelling. In the worst days of WoD where most of the WoW playerbase unsubbed, we were getting 40-50+ people online regularly for events.

Now we’ve had the chance to continue updating and refining the system, earning our reputation as a great guild on Moon Guard.

Basically, anon, the constant throughout all of this has been the commitment of the leadership to the guild. No one would feel passionate about the Sunguard if Felthier was discouraged or didn’t think it was interesting.

What people want is passion and interest. If you can show that you have commitment to the story you want to tell and willingness to persevere through hiccups and rifts, people will come to your guild.

Furthermore, think of something your guild can offer that others can’t. Are you leader of blood elf military guild #405 or are you the leader of a unique organization with a goal separate from these other ones?

The best advice I have to give you is to fake it til you make it. Act with the confidence that your guild is bomb af until it becomes bomb af. If it’s a small guild, hand pick people that you believe in and know will help to create an awesome guild. Have a friendly atmosphere. Respect everyone. Accept constructive criticism. etc etc

No guild will spring up to server fame over night. It takes hard work.

i managed to cool down my annoyance at him and im more mad that he just didnt tell me what was going on and just shut me out and left me kind of wondering what was going on, and i told him that and i’m glad he knows bc he kinda...ruined a lot my feelings for him? like .....i dont like that and i told him waaay before this that i was genuinely scared he was gonna bail and i needed him to be honest with me and he swore up and down he wouldnt hurt me and then his dumbass went and did it anyway KNOWING FULLY WELL i was gonna be upset about it and he says “i didnt know how to tell you” like i didnt say 1000 times just be honest with me as if from the beginning we didnt both say we should both speak our minds about things bc we both hate it when ppl dont do it

i understand not wanting to hurt me but he did it in the process of trying not to and its just not okay??

its only now i feel like a second wave of...not jealousy but discouragement? he didnt want a relationship he said and then he doesnt talk to me bc he thought he might be getting in a serious relationship i mean....i cant say what changed or whatever bc i dont really Care but i just feel like!!!! when will i be good enough for somebody to actually want a relationship with me??? when???? i feel at such a disadvantage sometimes for some reason and this really just confirmed all of that which is why im again sure im always gonna be on my own and alone which in a sense is fine but bothers me
