hi-ho, can't sleep so since i've posted the fic already, short as it is right now, i thought hey! lemme just do some explaining for why the fuck it's the way it is?? that way i make my job less hard with the writer-y bits!

On the Rating:

thinking of changing that, actually . next chapter, so ch3, will be more of the same - build up for the plot at large which is, ngl, a wee bit more complicated than i thought it would be in writing ch1. i don't have a hard and fast, bullet pointed skeleton for every chapter but i've got a very generalized outline of things i want happening... and the fic being rated for Teens feels lacking. no it absolutely is lacking.

would it be disingenuous to leave it at T until the plot changes up enough to warrant a level up? or should i change the rating now and leave everyone to wonder at my justification as the fic (very slowly, UGH) progresses? questions, questions and no answers in sight as yet.

the cast!

unlike in HF where we really did just have like, two MAIN main characters in shisui and sasuke, to oblivion has an ensemble cast🙏 the taggings are listed in order of both how much of the character we'll see in-fic and how much we'll focus on them. where HF was all about growth and healing with minimal outside interference, this fic is... well it has a plot🥹

in one of those oneshots i wrote after HF, there's this scene where shisui rants up a storm at sasuke about konoha, how rotten it can get yk? just, having to live in the village knowing that the truth of your family's murder has been suppressed to keep the peace - when the "peace" used to justify that extermination didn't even last more than a handful of years. this fic directly confronts that. actually, it's specifically because every single character engages in the village whether as the leader, in kks' case, or as proponents to its growth and success post-war, its kind of a necessity that everybody has an opinion about what goes on yk?

i feel like ppl who came into the fic expecting romance and fucking are gonna be disappointed by that sjshsjshshsh there's gonna be SOME of that, but very minimally, and right at the end lmao. fic subscribes to the idea that there is no room for personal growth within self and relationships in an environment in perpetual turmoil lmao

the timeline

woof. the timeline! WOOF! HF had the benefit of sticking incredibly close to just one stream of happenings in a very linear format,,,, to oblivion? not so much. the past, whether it's ten years ago, during the fourth war or even just prior to the fic happening is AS important to the story as the story itself, unfolding. if i decided to tell this fic in a linear fashion, a, it would be very boring and retrace too much of canon and b, it would be very LONG. like staggeringly long, enough that i'd probably tire of writing the fic long before i even reached where we are right now in the fic - there is SO MUCH yet to uncover

what i will say is that canon largely stays the same except for some staple fanons of mine, some seen in HF, and others very specifically for this AU. for the obvs staples, there's madara is final baddie and no VOTE2 so no losing arms for either of my babies - god forbid. the major deviation from HF is that i've reduced how debilitating Ssk's mental health issues (if you will) can be in presenting themselves, though we do have some of it cropping up within the fic if you're the type who reads very line by line. there's also, ofc, the fact that shisui has been ALIVE for all this time - but i'll save all the explaining for that to shisui when the time is appropriate.

but yes, it's because the past matters SO MUCH for how this fic develops that i really saw no other way to progress with it than mixing everything up. and i do mean EVERYTHING. what i will say is that there are certain periods where we can kinda cluster scenes together to form an idea of how all this shit is happening only Now.

war/between canon era: so far we only got one scene from here, from ch2

pre-tribunal, post-war - a LOT of scenes fall here, so it's broken up even further into two periods: 1. while sasuke is incarcerated post 4th war and 2. after he's left incarceration but before the tribunal (ch1 has a LOT of afterward scenes, in particular)

pre-massacre: these scenes will tend to be more kkshs focused so happy hunting for when there's more of them!

pre-trial, present day after shisui appears: this is the main storyline and will be the easiest to follow, go figure!

pre-trial, immediately post-tribunal: i've only written perhaps a scene or two(?) from this period, i don't see it cropping up as much as the others because it's only there specifically for relationship and character building. i'm squeezing a lot of post-canon pre-fic character development in to explain away why some of our faves may be acting a wee ooc, and i can't begin to explain how consequential the tribunal is, personally and politically for all of team seven oh lawd😭

i can't stress enough that i drafted much of the bedrock of this fic immediately after HF,,,, but while my intention (heh, hehe) (translate what the characters before "to oblivion" stand for, okay, its funny i swear!) remains the same as what it was then, my focus has become more... hm, exacting. sharpened.

writing is an inherently personal affair, i think. to write is to put meaning to the thoughts that swim around your head, whether that's by poetry or prose, through the guise of imagery or character work. i write fic because i like writing fic, and wanna be able to read work that satisfies me personally. i've got an itch in my brain and to oblivion has become, essentially, an outlet for my thought process. so if there's anything you find in it that speaks of a very particular kinda way of thinking, shall we say, keep poking at it. i very much am having a conversation with you.

AND LIKE okay SciSaru has a p western feel to its animation both bcs its unconventional use of certain programs and bcs they tend to hire very diversely (Co-founder and current CEO is korean, chief of animation is spanish, in animation credits you see a lot of english names etc.) which is SUPER rare to see in a lot of anime studios. Anyway anyway bcs they use a lot of digitally assisted animation it allows them more time to focus on movement and characterizing, and bcs they have a relativelt simple style compared to other studios that also saves time and allows for more stylization in their work. I rlly like it bcs it has a lot of signature anime-esque things (facial expressions, certain movements, scenery, formatting) but with more western elements as well. Its done beautifully, too !! Theyve done a lot more ambitious things like Devilman Crybaby and Ride Your Wave, but I think Eizouken is ons of their best works bcs the difference in the three dif main characters is so stark, both in stature and in personality. Being able to put a different personality to the same stature, and vice-versa, is incredibly difficult esp. for animation and theyve done it perfectly in eizouken. The movements also feel smooth and fresh, and its been stated that Masaaki Yuasa (former CEO) would often go to the animators and physically act our the movements he wanted to see so they would look more realistic.

Acrually back to the western-japanese meld it possibly came about when Yuasa was working w/ Ankama in its japanese branch bcs their use of adobe flash was smth he hadnt seen used before in animation (again- v different style than most traditional japanese styles). Also also its hard 2 fully explain the differences in framing and scenery between western and eastern animation- do yall know what I mean when i say that? I find anime specifically (havent seen a ton of other eastern shows) tends to play with the foreground and perspective more, but western cartoons impact the enviornment within it and use higher and more widespread shots, while also more commonly keeping the camera level. I think this might be because anime is usually adapted from manga, and in order to keep readers interested in still images you need to change the perspective and view and zoom more than is strictly needed within animation. Idk tho.

I. GRMGKRKGR. The way they re-introduce Huck makes my brain start bounding off my skull

First he's fully covered by the cloak, he looks relatively normal

then he falls backwards, revealing that he's completely emaciated, far past his previous thinness.

THEN we get the close-up shot to show the tumor, giving us a glimpse into just how damaging shimmer has been on his body - his hood even falls off to give us a full look.

I JUST. GOD. The escalation. Those small moments of Tension-Release are scattered all throughout Arcane and they all give me such massive brainworms.

LIKE EVEN FOR PPL WHO MIGHT NOT REMEMBER HIM,, ITS JUST SUCH A GOOD WAY OF REVEALING THOSE DETAILS.

and for the people who DO remember him it adds that little layer of,,,, Youch

AND THAT ANGLE. GOD. It really feels like we're looking down at him from the barrel of Cait's gun. The cinematography in this show is always so pretty.

His eyes are more jumpy, his hands are more expressive, that nervous laugh he has is escalated to the point that it. sounding like he's gonna burst into tears. ('I- I owed her old man my life. Probably more.. than that - I guess' ..... Bill Lobley did such an amazing job w/ his voice aaa)

My absolute favorite detail they added was post-timeskip Huck's,, self-soothing behaviors?

He holds his own hand, he leans against his arm - at one point he tries to rub his forehead before flinching back, forgetting his tumor is there AAAA </33333

It's so clear he isn't accustomed to contact, which makes Cait's hug feel so much more cathartic </3

HE JUST <33333. They really emphasize how vulnerable he is. His constant fear and his desperation to not be afraid is such a key part of his character.

Like he says himself that one of the main reasons he turned to shimmer was to finally, finally make other people the ones who are afraid I JUST. AAA. I FUCKING LOVE THIS GUY YALL IDK WHAT TO SAY.

i think im gonna take a break on reading this though and just wait for manhwa updates instead because the novel is very ... slow? or maybe i should say its a bit too light hearted for me i dunno

i think it would have been a little more interesting if the other members of testar were also part of some other system or if there was just a lot more drama in genera. i dont know but considering what i know of irl kpop and the really messy fights that happened, the internal and interpersonal character conflicts here are just the slightest bit too tame for me personally and, while that isn't necessarily bad thing, its just not to my drama loving taste. also the external conflicts aren't all that spicy either to act as a counterbalance.

well tbh, i was already very worried when i saw the survival show format and the first debut or die mission because thats a very short term conflict. and the back to back missions, format and tension of the survival show is incredibly good for creating escalating high stakes and, combined with the death penalty, it has a natural development for consistently high tension and lots of potential drama and conflicts. and the novel hit those points very well. and while i think they definitely could have potentially made this arc a little longer and explore different aspects, it does end as a satisfactory first arc. but now there's the rest of the 600 chapter story which will have to match that level of tension. and so far i dont think it really has? at least until cheongryeo LMAO which is why i love him so much!! he makes things interesting and the novel isnt afriad to make him villainous and start shit up and do actual things that really fucks up moondae and has like some future consequences like oh no whats gonna happen to their relationship, whatll they do in the future when they meet, whats happening to the other members and their relo with this sunbae who they admired

i just feel the novel is really fluffy and light hearted for a death scenario concept. and even if it didn't want external conflicts to be too heavy, a way to keep the stakes might have been to shift focus onto interpersonal conflicts instead. like i really thought they'd continue to do that when the keun seijin and bae seijin arc happened. and then the chungwon arc too! but it feels like its been twenty small online conflicts in a row between them. i just want stuff with like actual group breaking, and potentially friendship destroying conflicts that they have to work through.

yes the testar members are wholesome and nice and they love moondae and...? that's about it right now for the last some chapters now. they dont have arguments, they dont even really properly talk to each other. i know moondae treats it like coworkers and professionalism but maybe bring up more of the other members perspectives. like i know we're in moondae's pov but like considering the consistent pov shifts, it wouldn't be too bad to at least make it so that we can flesh out the other members and their relationships with each other too?

but like what do i know?

maybe i should've seen moondae's easy rise to platnium and quick skill up as an indicator that this novel isn't really focused on drama and breaking the kneecaps of its mc like what i prefer. i dunno i just thought that was a bait or smth and things escalate hard later or smth HAHAH yeah i guess when i saw the death failure, i jumped to conclusions and thought this novel would be a really gritty one that might touch on and explore the messed up behind the scenes of kpop

Tentacles curled around your legs and pulled you to the ground, you winced as you hit the floor. Your body curled up on itself as you tried to get away, another tendril reaching out to softly pat you and calm you down.

Your heart was racing and you weren’t too sure what was going on, the egg’s voice spoke to you and informed you of what was going on which was not only scary but disturbing. “Calm down, don’t you want to pledge your loyalty to me?” The egg asked in a kind of unintelligible voice.

It hurt your head and your ears to be listening to such a harsh voice, it pained you with how the sound rang and echoed around in your brain. You were starting to feel sick, you reached to hold onto your stomach.

Your head was heating up and you were starting to feel intensely dizzy, the feel of a slimy tentacle creeping up your leg bought you back to your senses. You slapped the tendril away and backed up against the wall, the egg hissed a bit at you but then quickly calmed down.

“Don’t you want to join me? Have all of your deepest wishes granted?” You shook your head, you knew the egg had a great influence on the people it came into contact with so you were trying to hold on to the last bit of sanity.

The tentacles slowly crept back up to you but you refused to move from your spot, shaking gently as they approached you and started to wrap around your feet. “Come on, I know what you really want..”

You sighed and lowered your head to stare at the ground, your eyes glancing up at the egg pitifully “and that is?” You asked “power.” The egg’s voice had distorted more as it answered your question.

It wasn’t wrong. You’ve had nothing but utter disrespect given to you since the moment you came to the Dream Smp, it’d be nice to gain some power and show these lambs who’s really in charge.

You crooked your head and glared at the egg “sounds intriguing, doesn’t it?” You were truly considering your options here. You could try to run and ultimately fail, running back to the world of people who hurt you or…

You could flee to the care of the egg, the thing that is promising you greatness. Looking at the two choices in front of you like this, seems like it’s not such a hard decision after all!

Your lips curled up into a slight smile “Fine. I’ll join you, what do you want from me?” You allowed the tentacles to fully wrap around the lower half of your body, your legs unable to move apart from each other.

The egg gently pulled you closer, dragging you across the floor until you’re sitting just beneath it. “I just need you to prove your loyalty” it didn’t sound like such a difficult task at first, you believed that you’d just be instructed to kill someone or recruit others but this task was a bit more complicated than that.

“Let me inside you..”

Your eyes widened “what??” You weren’t sure what you heard, you thought hoped it may have been a misunderstanding. “You need to willingly accept me into you..” the tentacles squeezed your legs tightly.

You gulled nervously and nodded “o- okay” you didn’t know what you were thinking at the time but you hoped this was a good choice. The egg seemed thrilled by your decision as it spawned my tentacles to engulf your body.

Your armour was tossed to the floor, a loud clacking noise echoing the halls. Your clothes were torn as well, most of the fabric still being attached to your body apart from the large holes that were created to expose your sensitive bits.

Your pants were ripped at and torn off, the thread loosening and falling to the ground along with the destroyed fabric. You whines when you started to feel the tentacles’ suction cups sucking on the soft skin on your thighs.

You moved your arms to push the sticky tentacles off your thighs but that only encouraged the egg to tie your hands behind your back, you gasped and tried to get them out of the egg’s grasp but to no avail.

“Let my hands go!” You complained, the egg ignoring you as it’s tentacles slid up your torso and started to gently toy around with your nipples. Your face grew hotter and a large lump appeared in your throat that you couldn’t swallow down in that moment.

The suction cups returned, pinching your nipples and suckling on them like a regular human would be able to. You cringed at the feeling of the tentacles starting to lactate a sticky slimy consistency, lathering your body in it as it touched you.

You had in fact agreed to this but it was still so weird to you!

Another pair of tentacles lunged at you and tore off your underwear, rubbing your crotch gently just to lather it up with the slimy lubricant before pushing into your hole gently “fuck!” You cursed out loud. You arched your back and clenched your eyes shut as you felt it penetrate you, it felt weird and you hated the feeling of the slime inside you.

You growled out loud “do you recruit all your followers like this?!” You shouted, getting no response in return. A gasp leaving your mouth as the tentacle dug a little deeper into your body, suction cups clinging to your tight fleshy walls.

You couldn’t help but start to enjoy the feeling of the tentacles fucking you, your face scrunched up and you tried to focus on your climax. The egg started to enter a second tentacle inside of you, both of the tentacles being quite the tight fit.

You screamed in pleasure and went to cover your mouth with your hand until you remembered your restraints, feeling embarrassed as your pleasurable noises left your mouth.

Your walls tightened around the tendrils, the pressure from your stomach bursting and leaving you a panting mess on the ground. Sweat dripped from your forehead onto the ground, a weird smell emitting from you now that you had just came.

The egg seemed satisfied as it pulled its tentacles out of you, a small but deep rumbling coming from the egg which shook the floor gently. You moved now that you were released, legs a bit too weak to be able to walk so you just stayed kneeling in front of the egg.

“You have proven your loyalty to me, thank you” you bowed your head down “what now, boss?” You asked.

obviously there are a lot of (possible) overlaps between sidestep and things you experience as an autistic person, and i think its weaved into the story in a really coherent way where it makes sense with sidesteps experiences. i feel like some of them get mentioned (relatively?) often enough, such as how seperated sidestep can feel from humanity or the effort that they have to put into simple conversation in order to essentially mask, but one thing i actually never saw brought up and that i identify a lot as an autistic person is how frustrated sidestep feels about not being able to read ortega’s mind. okay stick with me here. the amount of frustration and fear they show at times over not being able to understand why ortega does certain things and what they mean by them hits hard because its something that i struggle with a lot! sometimes i will be in my room it will drive me absolutely off the walls that i can’t understand people/predict their behaviour/understand their motivations and prepare and respond accordingly. obviously this is smth that a lot of people can struggle with, but it has a specific extreme format for (some!!) autistic people/sidestep imo. anyway what im saying is fhr is so well written.

His sudden appearance had sent the entrance ceremony spiraling into chaos. A fierce spark, the prelude to a blazing dance of blue flames and fire. He was that little bit of light in the darkness, the hope that made your heart’s pitter-patter quicken.

You peeked out from your hiding spot behind the bookshelf. 

To the average onlooker, you must have looked pretty shady--eyes shielded by sunglasses, the lower half of your face concealed in a dust mask, baggy attire, and a hood puled over your head--but this was essential, in your mind, to let you follow him around, undetected. In reality, it made you stick out like a sore thumb.

There he was, languidly running a finger across a line of books. His expression was serious, softening with a gasp as he came upon the title he had been searching for.

Yuuken gently eased the desired tome out with his index, and, holding it in one hand, set to reading its contents.

You leaned forward and stared intensely--focusing on the smallest of details, from the way his brow creased in concentration to the glide of his eyes across the words. He caught a page, let it sail through the air, and flipped to a fresh one.

“You’re definitely suspicious,” Yuuken concluded, drawing back from you. He knelt to the floor, picking up your sunglasses, and offered them. When you hesitated, he propped them up on your forehead.

Yuuken pointed to your to your generally baggy outfit, then to the rest of your sketchy attire. “Be careful that you don’t trip. That hood can obscure your periphery. The glasses mute colors. And the mask...”

He tilted his head to one side.

“... Well, I guess the mask is alright. But the rest of it could put you in harm’s way.”

“Huh...?”

Yuuken looked at you quizzically. “The students of Night Raven College are the type to pick a fight often, right? So you should be more careful. I was close to clocking you myself with my kendo sword.”

“So why didn’t you?”

“You’re suspicious, but you haven’t attacked me like the mob students from before. There’s no reason to pick a fight with you. If I did... I’d just feel crappy.”

Your cheeks flared with heat. Something shone in his sharp eyes--nobility, earnest. Rare things on a campus teeming with faceless delinquents and troublemakers.

In the distance, a bell chimed--and both of your heads turned toward it.

“Ah, that’s the start of next period,” Yuuken noted, adjusting the strap on his sword case. “I gotta get going... But take care of yourself, alright? And no more sneaking around in weird outfits to stare at people.”

“Uh, y-yeah!”

With a nod, he turned and began making his way to the door. Just as his hand came down upon the doorknob, you called out to him.

“U-Um!”

He glanced at you over his shoulder. “Yeah?”

“Will I be able to see you again? W-Without having to dress up and watch you from a distance, I mean,” you stammered. Without getting wall-slammed.

“Hmm, I don’t see why not. It couldn’t hurt to have some regular faces in this weird world,” he replied, a small smile on his lips. “I guess I’ll see you around, then.”

With a wave, he was gone. Appearing and disappearing, as if by magic--again. Leaving the scene, your heart, a big, blubbering mess.

bad buddy ep 1 ramble

ok so I absolutely adore p’aof and all of his projects and expected nothing less than smth incredible from this show. the premise was strong from the start and the first episode just solidified the level of care that went into this show. ok things I’m enjoying so fart

1) I cannot stress enough how much I love the format of the show. it has taken the classic uni/engineering BL style and has subverted it in a way that doesn’t need to be intentional - by making it unapologetically itself and also very deliberate and well made. The editing is far more ambitious than pretty much any BL I’ve seen and it adds so much comedy and enjoyment to the viewing experience. While Voiceover and dialogue still play a huge part in communicating the story, the camera work, the sets, the costumes, the sound and the colours all add a more impressive and high quality dimension to the show. It’s made with such respect for its roots but is also made to be innovative and different from its predecessors.

2) the intro is just wonderful. It lays out the characters so well, it has such distinct personality which matches the show and the intro music is upbeat and organic with the visuals. Simple, but full of colour and intrigue. Perfect.

3)pat and pran. both of them feel like real people!! they r such good stand alone characters which is so important in a character driven romance plot. their motivations and intentions were so clear and consistent to their personalities. their dynamic was full of warmth and the air of excitement that comes with young love and developing a crush on someone. all of their scenes together highlighted the wonderful chemistry the actors had as well as just showing their cautious yet familiar dynamic.

4)the rivalry. Romeo and Juliet is a classic and lifting the concept of rival families and friendship circles is such a good way to start building the world your characters live in. It puts them on an equal footing from the beginning and creates the sense of something well understood but unspoken between them and I fucking love it.

5)supporting cast. the sister is wonderful. she is probably going to act as a voice of reason and sense of stability for pat and he deserves that. all of their friends seem wildly supportive and generally like a solid addition to their worlds, as well as a different perspective on the events that are going to unfold. I have a feeling the families are going to play a major part in the drama of the show and I think that’s a marvellous choice, there are already some clear dynamics forming with a favoured parent and the different family dynamics that the two leads have.

6)budding (haha get it) romance. oh it’s STRONG. they already have such a good rappor, and the romance aspect is so well integrated into their friendship that it isn’t going to be hard to make that switch in the future. I already talked about the warmth of their scenes together but I would like to once again discuss the unspoken nature of the joy they feel when they get to spend time together and be close to each other. they are clearly a great team with similar mind sets who have the ability to communicate their boundaries and not lose themselves in the desire to change to fit with their significant other. also pat’s sister having some awareness of pat’s feelings for pran is such a good choice and draws attention to the fact that pat has been queer this whole time and that is an integral part of how he navigates his life. his feelings for pran are clearly a source of pain and confusion of him, whereas pran’s feelings aren’t as clearly defined yet but still feel as intense and central to the way he conducts himself as pat’s feelings are.

my predictions:

-pran’s mum is going to be a pain in everybody’s ass

-pat either is already out as gay or has come out to himself and not told anyone yet

-if we get a coming out story it’s going to be pran’s coming out

-the idea of time and the presence of clocks is going to be a constant theme in the show

-I’m banking on at least one friend b romance plot

-this show is gonna Hurt
