The few things I remember from V9 was the weed smoke scene where Team RWBY are confronting their past selves.

I remember it because it was so incoherent. Seeing it again months later, you can feel how much the writers struggled to convince the viewers that Team RWBY had substantial growth throughout the series and how these topics their past selves confront them with don't have any weight.

Ruby's moment felt like it had something to it, however, and it did carry throughout the volume until the end. But Blake, Yang and Weiss have nothing to burden themselves with.

Weiss and her Schnee family lineage? It doesn't matter because Team RWBY sunk Atlas and Mantle, which was also the biggest distribution center for Dust, so her lineage is gone and she has nothing - neither do the rest of her surviving family members.

Yang is fine with her arm and didn't doubt it after Blake held her hand while confronting Adam. Yang has not let that part of herself burden her anymore, so this scene of her past self trying to convince her to "become whole again" was stupid.

Blake has, by all means, already taken the biggest step to fixing the White Fang and the Faunus movement. After stopping the bombing in V5 and killing Adam, there have been no threats of White Fang after that. The slavery (that she basically ignored for a long time) that was happening with SDC is gone now, so again, she has nothing more to worry about because the biggest slaver (Jacques) is gone.

They even lost a well-loved and highly important General of the Atlas Army, so if there were any soldiers left, they couldn't do anything because they lost their power once Atlas was gone and Ironwood dead.

The kids have nothing much to fight for, and you could say "they still have to face Salem," but I would say Salem is the least of their problems. Even Cinder isn't that important to them, and Cinder has slowly stopped caring about Ruby over time. She just wants the Maiden Powers now and Salem just wants the Relics.

Salem seems to have stopped caring about Ruby being a SEW, which is pretty big because she made it a huge deal back in V4, but as the years have passed, Salem has changed trajectory and wants the Relics to quicken her and Remnant's end. Perhaps Salem is becoming aware of how uninvolved Team RWBY are.

What she really needs to look out for is every RWBY fans' favourite white boy, Jaune.

Okay, this is me being petty, but I am curious to know if CRWBY will perpetuate this "Jaune is the main character" act some more, just to stick it to people who don't like him. Well, I say: please do it, it'll just help prove that he's far more important to prove himself to the vast majority than Team RWBY.

So, RWBY has lost much of its identity and V9 really shows it. It feels lost, and not in an Alice in Wonderland way. It feels like a colleague of newspaper clippings being glued together to try and create a narrative, but it's all just nonsense that would be tossed in the bin later because the ending didn't let all of the events matter.

But I am totally looking forward to Team RWBY destroying Vacuo!

favourite rwby's allusions?

Hi,

thank you so much for this ask! I love RWBY's allusions and talking about them is always a pleasure! So, I have currently 4 allusions I would call faves. I love many others too, but these 4 are kind of special for me:

Cinder Fall - Cinderella

Cinder's allusion is at the same time obvious and very layered. The key to understand it is Midnight (best written episode of the series imo). There, Cinder's fairy-tale gets inverted. She is a slave who finds her prince (Rhodes), but is ultimately failed and left in the darkness. At the same time, Cinder's background helps us read her allusion in the main storyline. As a matter of fact Cinder's story is about the cycle of abuse. She is stuck in it, so her fairy tale keeps repeating and won't have a happy ending until she interrupts the cycle. As a result we have:

Salem as a combination between the Evil Stepmother (Madame) and the Fairy Godmother (Rhodes)

Ruby as the Prince (a better version of Rhodes)

Emerald and Mercury as Cinder's slippers (the embodyment of the twin swords of her childhood)

Salem is the Evil Stepmom masked as a powerful Fairy Godmother, who gives Cinder a new pair of shiny slippers (the Maiden Powers). Still, they are only a tool to manipulate our Cinderella. Ruby is instead the Huntress who dances with Cinder and will save her with her personal silver slippers (her silver eyes). Finally, Emerald and Mercury are the two sides of Cinder, her two slippers who will lead the Prince (Ruby and RWBY) to her.

Key to understand the allusion- The episode Midnight (+ the Beacon Dance tbh)

Favourite motif- Emerald and Mercury as the slippers

Why it is a fave- It balances its relevance to the plot with strong imagery and metaphors. So, it is easy to notice, but it leaves much to discover once you start analyzing it

Weiss Schnee - Snowhite

Weiss's allusion plays with the idea of "royal test":

White is cold and always yearning, burdened by a royal test.

Which is nothing, but a trial to see if Weiss is fit to become Queen. In fairy-tale symbolism, a princess becomes queen when she grows up and self-actualizes. So, Weiss's story is one where she blooms into herself. Initially, she is given two opposite examples of "queens":

Jacques is the Evil Queen of Snowhite

Winter is the Snow Queen of Andersen's story

Weiss's arc is about realizing she is neither. She is instead her own queen:

She does so through integrating the different characters of her fairy tale within herself. She is Snowhite, as such she is made of all the characters that make her story:

She risks to become an Evil Queen

She is an unsure Huntress

She is the Prince who saves herself

She is Snowhite, who grows into a Queen

All these sides are expressed through her summons:

The Queen Lancer is the Evil Queen who gets dethroned by the Good Queen (Snowhite) in the end

The Boarbatusk is the Hunter who kills a boar to help Snowhite

The Knight is the Prince who saves Snowhite

The Nevermore is the crow turned into dove, which announces Snowhite's final resurrection

So, the summons are different characters of Snowhite. Moreover, each character fits a different Jungian Archetype:

The Queen is the Persona (the mask she wears)

The Hunter is the shadow (what she represses)

The Prince is the animus (the masculine inside the feminine)

Snowhite is the self (the sum of all other archetypes)

In short, Weiss plays all the characters of her story and her semblance is used to metaphorically comment her arc and tie her fairy-tale to the main plot in a symbolic way. It might seem Weiss's story isn't following Snowhite's. Still, if one focuses on Weiss's inner journey it turns out she has already gone through the majority of the Grimms' fairy tale. Only a finale is missing, which I think will crown Weiss's arc with an apple. (I need an apple)

Key to understand the allusion- Weiss's summons are Snowhite's characters

Favourite motif- Snowhite's characters fitting different Jungian Archetypes

Yang XiaoLong - Goldilocks and the Three Bears

Yang's allusion is built on the idea of hot, cold and just right, which is declined in three different ways:

Red is hot, blue is cold and purple is just right. These colors comment Yang's arc and semblance. In particular, she is usually the just right (purple eyes), but when she uses her power she becomes too hot (red eyes)

Ruby is red, Weiss is blue and Blake is purple. This makes them Yang's hot, cold and just right. Together, they are the three bears of the fairy - tale, who welcome Yang in their found family

Yang is going through a process to find her just right. Still, before she succeeds she has to go through the too hot and too cold. In particular...

The Vale's arc is Yang's too hot:

Yang: Strawberry Sunrise. No ice. Oh, and one of those little umbrellas.

Yang goes to look for Raven and orders a hot beverage (no ice). She ends her search by finding Ruby (her hot bear). At the end of the arc she explodes in flames and loses an arm.

The Mistral's arc is Yang's too cold:

Yang: A water. It's hot out.

Yang goes to look for Raven and orders a cold beverage. She ends her search by finding Weiss (her cold bear). At the end of the arc she keeps it cool while fighting Adam and wins.

After this process, she has found her just right:

Still, I am sure Vacuo will explore this idea further and lead Yang's to her finale and truest "just right" as a character.

Key to understand the allusion - The Yellow Trailer sets up the metaphor with its different layers

Favourite motif - Red, blue and purple as hot, cold and just right

Why it is a fave - It uses dialogues and lines as motifs much more than other allusions and I find it neat. Especially because Yang is pun-girl and linked to knowledge, so I think this choice fits a lot.

Emerald Sustrai - Aladdin

Emerald's allusion is one that caught me off guard and now I love it! The key idea is that Emerald is both Aladdin and the Geenie. As a matter of fact Cinder tricks Emerald with the promise to fulfill her wish only to turn her into a slave. In general, the key characters and motif in Em's allusion are:

Cinder and Salem as the 2 geenies that promise to fulfill Emerald's wishes

Cinder and Salem as the 2 Evil Wizards that abuse Emerald

The Cave of Wonders as the cycle of abuse

The Lamp (the Relic of Knowledge) and the Ring (Em's own semblance) as magical tools that help our Aladdin out

In general, Emerald's design and basic idea tie with Disney-Aladdin's famous line:

"Only one may enter here, one whose worth lies far within... the Diamond in the Rough" (Aladdin, 1992)

Emerald is a precious gem covered in dirt, but with time she will find her inner value and discover what she truly wants. As a matter of fact her allusion thematically explores the differences between wants vs needs. Emerald starts by following an illusory wish (Cinder), but is slowly realizing her true wish and need (RWBYJNRO and Mercury). Differently from others' allusions, hers is just at the beginning and needs some kind of climatic conclusion. I am looking forward to ti! (Bonus if it ties with Mercury's headcanon allusion I came up with :P)

Key to understand the allusion - Cinder and Salem playing the parts of the geenies while referencing respectively a ring and a lamp

Why it is a fave - I love the potential of how the geenies and the wish imagert can be used in Emerald and Mercury's arcs. It can be very very powerful!

These are my 4 faves, but of course there are other allusions I love! It is just I have analyzed them less, so it is as if I am lacking a full picture. They are:

Ruby's LRRH- I love how it is intertwined with the Alice's one in volume 9. Still, I think there is much more to it.

Penny's Pinocchio- It is one of the most powerful allusions tbh and I would like to analyze it properly one day. Its ending being an inversion of the original fairy-tale is perfect. Here it is Penny (Pinocchio), who creates Winter (The Blue Fairy).

Jaune's Jeanne D'Arc - The Jaunidice's arc sets up this allusion brilliantly. The way it ties Pyrrha with Jaune's inspiration and personal God and how it manifests itself each arc with a miracle Jaune witnesses or performs is very powerful.

I also like Blake's Beauty and Beast's allusion, but I did not have to discover it slowly and it came to me as pretty obvious. So, I like it a little less.

I have yet to think about Ren and Nora's allusions, but I am interested in them.

Finally, I am super interested in Mercury's allusion and I am curious about it. I think its set-up is great and I wanna see how it plays out.

So I had a thought.

*minor out of context spoilers*

At first, I thought Weiss not having powers was to mirror Batman, which in part it was, but he was a Faunus in thier world, so she should have had something. The scene where she dives off the shipping container shows she doesn't truly need it either. It also showcases that Weiss is powerful with or without powers and makes us remember that. But thats not the point of that. We know she is.

I thought on it some more and realized, her being normal, its probably because of her actual semblance. She's come SO far in summoning now she barely has to think on it, has way more control, she's way faster at it, and I believe its because of the trust and love for her team.

She had no semblance because its tied to her actual family. Its so unique, it belongs to the Schnee family. Its literally inherited. But they're fractured atm, and hated by so many, and Atlas, her home, is gone. She cant connect to her powers because of it. We saw her struggle the whole movie about "who she is" without Atlas. She had to sit there with no power or weapon, and rely on RBY, her actual family. With her seeing they ARE a part of her, and knowing who she is, I believe a power wouldve activated at that realization if they hadnt gone into the fake world.

I was a little bummed because it wouldve been so cool to see what her ice could've done, but it gave us a lot of growth on her so I'm not too sad. Also explains why she wasnt a big part of the teasers, she had a whole storyline for herself. It would have given everything away.

How did Jaune vanish?

Weiss had passed away. She died at the age of 278 years old, using the rejuvenation treatments. She was afraid one of her descendents would have the Schnee family return to the way her father originally had it, so she did her best to ensure that never happened. She finally realized after all this time, it would never. So she finally let herself rest, saying goodbye to Jaune as she took her final breathe. Her funeral was massive considered the huge legacy she left behind due to her actions that resulted in Remnant becoming a major trading power house. She was the last of his friends to pass on...

Jaune would seclude himself in his sanctum, for a month nothing was heard until one day he walked out called upon his council, and left Remnant with a painfully selected crew. Arael and the council were chosen by Jaune to lead the chapter and protect Remnant in his stead. The Juniper was left to safeguard Remnant while Jaune took a strike cruiser and left the Remnant sector. The last sighting of the cruiser was it entering the eye of Terror. Jaune was never seen again.

Rumors persist as to why the Primarch left; one stating he went in Seach of a way to bring back his friends. Another stating he sought to find the lost 100, a company of Remnant Knights that vanished during warp travel at the height of the Horus Heresy. Many more Rumors persist but one ranks above all and one that even has the inquisition trying to question the council about; Jaune went to find Magnus the Red.

Evidence point at this as remembrances from the time wrote how the Primarch only selected those with great Psyker powers. Those descended from the Civilians of Prospero that were saved by Jaune at the time of its destruction. Remnant Knights chosen were also those trained by the ancient Thousand sons. Not only that, but jaune had taken the relic of knowledge with him as well. The council has refused any and all interrogation attempts by the Inquisition. Resulting in the Remnant Knights being viewed with suspicion. Whatever the case is, the loss of the Primarch was devastating blow to the early chapters of the Remnant Knights.

Okay, RWBY theory time. If Ruby is confronted with her younger self in the caterpillar’s smoke clouds, who’s to say that Blake, Yang, and Weiss aren’t having a similar experience? What if, in order to become big again, they need to show that they’ve matured? What if they’re all confronted by versions of themselves from their early beacon days for whatever reason? Say, versions who were struggling to figure out why they wanted to become huntresses around a certain campfire in Mountain Glenn?

In the smoke, Blake is confronted with her younger self, uncertain of how to undo so many years of hate and injustice, and now she can tell her younger self that it’s not just up to her, but if she looks around her, she’ll find many people who are willing to fight that fight, and she doesn’t have to carry that weight by herself. Maybe she couldn’t turn Adam away from a dark path, but she and her family convinced Ilia and other Faunus that there is a way to fight back against prejudice that doesn’t involve violence. That results in saving lives. And even when things go wrong, she won’t need to feel like running away all the time, and if she does, well, she knows there are open arms waiting to welcome her back. Maybe a particular set of arms, of which one is yellow.

Weiss confronts a version of herself worried about living up to a family legacy, and although she may feel at first like that legacy is gone along with the rest of Atlas, she realizes that the legacy isn’t just up to her. (Wait a minute, this sounds like something I said in a previous paragraph…) Although her father’s actions are still a sore spot for older Weiss, she can tell her younger self she successfully stopped him from messing up more lives when she had the chance. And once the rest of her family was out from under Jacques’ control, they all acted in ways that made her proud, and now she realizes that family is about more than legacy, that she can do good not because she is tied to the Schnee name, but because she is who she is: she’s Weiss. And her family values her for that. Her family being team RWBY as well as Winter, Whitley, Willow and Klein. As a huntress she can do more for them, and more with them, than she could as a Schnee. (Although the company perks almost helped…)

Now, Yang might meet a younger version of herself who still has both arms, who’s not thinking too much about tomorrow, who’s just in it for the adventure. But an older, more harrowed Yang, down an arm, reassures her young, naive self. Things got a lot harder than just, “go with the flow, you know”, but she made it through. And now she knows that not having any expectations and just seeking thrills were ways to avoid thinking about the things she had lost, or never had, ways to fill an emptiness inside of her that reflected her insecurities and self-worth issues. Sure, she still doesn’t quite know what tomorrow will bring, but she does know that her team will be there, and that they’ll always try to help others, so they don’t have to have a missing mom. Some things are better off being certain. Tomorrow used to bring a certain kind of loneliness in its unpredictability, but not anymore. Maybe some things should not stay uncertain. And when she gets out of the smoke she’ll look at Blake with that fond look and make the audience melt (and Blake blush). Don’t worry there will be more clouds to help you confess your damn feelings! Ahem, sorry about that.

Lastly, Ruby, at her lowest, most uncertain, down on her luck, and depressed, meets a younger version of herself, who was so sure, so set in her path, who was already a huntress at heart. And now, when Ruby is questioning herself, her own actions, and her worth as a huntress, her younger self asks her, “what are you gonna be?” And our Ruby won’t know how to answer. She will feel like she’s not a huntress, she’s barely Ruby Rose, she’s just a girl. How does she move forward? How did she end up so far from this hopeful girl she was in the past? A long string of failures have led her here. And Ruby can tell her past self nothing. She either breaks down, in the safety of the clouds / hallucination, or bottles that feeling up to come back to at a later time. Maybe she’ll find it in herself to say, “I don’t know. I don’t know what I’m going to be. But I know that I am going to do whatever it is I need to do to get out of here.” Not learning the lesson, but refusing to stay still. There will be time to learn that lesson later.

Anyway, that’s just what I think will maybe not happen, but wouldn’t it be cool if some of it did.

Weiss freaks out over a pimple

“This cant be happening!” Weiss practically yelled out from the bathroom. She poked at a small zit on her cheek, practically frowning at it as she absentmindedly went through the medicine cabinet for any of her facial creams. “Of all the days for this to happen, why did it have to be today? I dont have time to deal with this!” 

Yang looked almost annoyed as she made her way over. “Weiss, when I said you could stay over, I mean you could yell at nothing first thing in the morning. What’s going on now?” 

Weiss found one of her creams and started to rub it over her blemish, relaxing a little as it seemed to look more like her skin color and not a glaring red dot. “I have a zit!” 

“And?” 

“And?! I cant deal with that today!” 

“Having a zit isnt the end of the world.” 

“I know that!” Weiss growled out as she turned around to face Yang. After a deep breath and a loud huff, she went back to looking at her reflection, still noticing the zit on her cheek. “I still have the charity that I need to be at today, and then the photoshoot, and after that I-” 

“Maybe you should slow down with all of this.” 

“I cant. If I want to fix my family’s name-” 

“A name you dont have anymore.

“-then I have to do this.” 

“Why does it matter?” Yang sighed and pulled away from the bathroom door to get herself some breakfast. “Your father disowned you, so why spend so much time stressing to fix everything they broke?” 

“Because it matters to me!” Weiss sat her facial cream down and looked at the zit on her cheek again. Of course it had to be a stress blemish after spending weeks trying to get everything perfect for today. Her finger ran over the zit again as she started to run water in the sink. “I know I shouldnt care, its not anything I’m ever going to run, but my grandfather… I looked up to him in the same way that you and Ruby looked up to your mother. He was my hero, the one who started my father’s company and the one who made the Schnee name mean something. I-I cant let my father be the one to destroy what the Schnee name was meant to be. So I’ll do everything I can to at least let my grandfather rest knowing that there was at least someone who cared about what he did.” 

“So you’ve decided to what, push yourself to get a family name back and push Ruby and Penny away until you get it back? And how long do you plan to keep this up? Have you tried to call them since moving in?” 

“N-no, they’ve been busy with their own missions. But that doesnt matter right now. Right now, I need to make myself presentable.” 

“If all you want is to look presentable, I have some zit cream you can use. Put a little over and then cover with foundation and you’ll be good all day. But you have to reach out to Ruby and Penny. You cant keep avoiding them forever.” 

Weiss sighed and stared at her reflection. “Zit first, then the charity, and… and then I’ll call Ruby” 

Yang nodded and started to make herself a protein shake. “You better.” 

Weiss went to grab the zit cream, putting a small dab over her zit and padding a little foundation over it. She smiled a bit when it seemed to disappear, her eyes still stuck at where she’d seen the zit. With a deep breath, she pulled away and started to make her way out to her charity event, keeping a mirror on hand.

Can you elaborate on how Weiss should've let her hair down and her attitude should've become more rebellious and less uptight after healing from her family?

Sure!

The show dipped its toes in themes of wealth inequality and classism, establishing that Weiss's family was the most wealthy with the most influence and with the most dark past. I think they had a responsibility to then make it clear that they were against that dark past (including Nicholas Schnee) and against billionaires and classism. And the show also established that Weiss at the beginning of the show was judgmental, high strung, bigoted, and spoiled, but they were trying to get across that she has a heart of gold anyway (though with how they mishandled the Faunus/White Fang issue, it puts a damper on Weiss's early character.) By the time the third season was done, Weiss had already grown much more casual and easygoing, having fun with Ruby and Yang, and it was also established that her home life wasn't very happy and she (with Winter's encouragement) started taking steps to shed her reliance on her father's ways. Then in volume four, we see Weiss more unhappy and subdued than we've ever seen her in very unhappy circumstances with her father treating her badly, and her 'princess' vibes have actually gotten more intense than ever with the heavy jewelry and closed up blue dress. Her moment where she yells at the party goers for being so out of touch and then her actively running away from the life of luxury but confinement she's been stifled in... Plus, songs like It's My Turn, Mirror Mirror Part II, and This Life Is Mine really gave the impression of disillusionment that Weiss was breaking away from everything she knew and finding happiness once she was free from everything holding her back.

The closed off blue-gray dress and heavy jewelry really felt like symbolism to indicate how held back Weiss was. I kind of thought that when she left or when she got to Haven with the others, she would change into something white and open and less princess based (and maybe cut her hair.) And I wanted Weiss to leave the family because of realizing how horrible her parents and grandfather were and how unhappy she actually was, but instead she left because her dad gave her inheritance to Whitley and she couldn't become CEO anymore. And then I thought leaving her family and all the luxuries behind would kickstart a growth arc for Weiss where she struggles with basically having nothing but also starts enjoying herself, and starts realizing how much she never actually wanted the things her parents and grandfather had wanted.

But what actually happened was that they kept Weiss in that muted closed off dress for seasons while kind of just acting like she wasn't concerned about anything and didn't need to go through any changes, and then she went to Atlas. And I thought "Oh here we go, now she's going to start leaning into the rebellion stuff, all of this being in Atlas business is going to make Weiss remember how horrible her family has been and she'll throw off their classist ways and snobbish vibes, and be more of a woman of the people and maybe even let go of her grudge against Whitley and try to get him out because she no longer wants to be CEO and realizes that he's in the same boat she once was in." And then her V7-9 look was even more princess-y and rich and muted and heavy than ever before like being in Atlas had just made her miss her old lifestyle or want to prove she belonged to it or something. And the writers leaned into the 'it's not that billionaires are bad, it's that Jacques is a non-blood related usurper bad apple' thing with Willow being good actually and with having Weiss's grandfather being fine actually, and they had Blake joke about Weiss's family owning everything, and Weiss was still acting like Whitley had ruined her life, and Jacques just got brushed off, and Weiss got all this angel imagery and didn't care about attending the rally for the person going against Jacques.

Then the Schnees lost their whole fortune and mansion anyway, but like, that just makes it feel even more like Weiss didn't want that and would've actually gone back to being a billionaire CEO while dressed like a princess and living in a giant mansion the size of Blake's whole home town. And it just reeks of.... Billionaire simping. I really wish that Weiss had been more rebellious and shed a lot of her princess imagery and got away from the ideals of her family more, because not only would it imo make Weiss a stronger and better character, but it would also make RWBY more progressive because it would be anti-billionaire anti-classism commentary.

RWBY Characters as Tarot Cards

01. The Magician - Weiss

The Magician is a figure associated with creativity and limitless possibilities. Traditionally depicted with a wand raised towards the sky, the Magician forms a bridge between the heavens and the earth, connecting the supernatural to the natural. Channeling the raw elements of creation itself, this figure is capable of radical self-determinism and limitless possibilities. And what better RWBY character to represent this archetype than Weiss, errant Schnee heiress and God’s favorite princess.

Weiss’ primary character arc involves forging a destiny for herself outside the oppressive clutches of her father, Jacque Schnee. Rejecting the comfortable life of a noble socialite, she sets out to become a Huntress, directly defying her father’s wishes. Though its status in the canon is questionable, the first episode of RWBY: Ice Queendom implies that Weiss’ iconic battle with the Arma Gigas in the White Trailer was specifically meant to decide whether or not she would even be allowed to attend Beacon Academy. Even before receiving formal combat training, Weiss had to literally fight for the life she wanted.

But of course, Weiss is no ordinary fighter. Her signature fighting style revolves heavily around the use of Dust, a resource she has plenty of access to as a member of the Schnee family. Viewed through the lens of RPG terminology, Weiss fills the role of a caster in team RWBY, capable of unleashing offensive elemental attacks or supporting her allies through the use of her Glyphs.

The theme of Dust is important for Weiss' character, for it relates directly to her status as heiress to the SDC. Though she ultimately turns her back on that position, it is clear that her ties to the Schnee family have not been completely severed. Rather than completely distancing herself like her older sister Winter, Weiss is determined to salvage what she can of her family's legacy. She frequently expresses dismay and outrage at Jacques' business practices and political maneuvering throughout the Atlas arc, and her monologue to the Herbalist in V9 E4 makes it clear that she intends to redefine her family's name rather than simply abandoning it. In this, Dust serves as both the means and the ends of her personal journey: it fuels her path away from her family's history by allowing her to serve as a Huntress, but it also connects her to that same history.

Much as Dust connects Weiss to her family's legacy, it also connects her with the archetype of the Magician. Though the show goes to great lengths to emphasize the difference between Dust and the “true” magic of prehistoric Remnant, the practical effects are the same - they both provide the user with the ability to create supernatural effects by channeling the raw elemental forces of creation. Likewise, historical “magicians” of our world were not so much wielders of magic as those who dabbled in forces most could not understand. Before our modern understanding of science and nature, herbalists, chemists, and astronomers were all viewed with an air of mistrust by many clergy and commoners who saw their practices as tampering with the mystical arcane. To practice these arts was to face ostracism from greater society - just as Weiss faced ostracism from her family for becoming a Huntress.

Over the course of the show, Weiss has already undergone great personal change. Once cold and distant, she has grown comfortable expressing herself around whom she trusts. Team RWBY has in many ways become the family she never had as a child, a place where her icy facade can melt in the warmth of acceptance. She still bears the marks of a noble upbringing, displaying a grace and elegance that many of her more rambunctious allies lack. But her refined bearing has become an expression of personal identity, rather than a barrier meant to keep others away. Her snarky comments and snobbish standards have become endearing to both her fans and her comrades - oftentimes becoming a point of comedic relief as the normally unflappable Weiss attempts to make sense of the comically absurd situations team RWBY finds themselves in.

Even though Weiss has already undergone radical change over the course of the show, in many ways her journey is only beginning. Every day of her life is a chance to redefine her family’s legacy and undo the harm her father did. It is worth noting that Weiss never gives specifics on what she intends to do with her new-found freedom. She will be a Huntress, yes - but that has always been a role that could take many forms, even before the world-order began to crumble under Salem's assault. Will she focus her efforts on defending the innocent from the Grimm? Reforming Atlas' political structure? Enacting reparations towards the Faunus for the injustices committed against them? All of the above? The question is left open-ended. Ultimately, the important thing is that Weiss has reached the point where she gets to be defined by her own actions, rather than those of her family. Each day brings with it limitless possibility to reshape herself and her identity as a Schnee. That is Weiss’ ultimate triumph - the triumph of the Magician.

For the card art, the emphasis would be on Myrtenaster, both as a symbol of her own personal identity and as a classical representation of the Magician's power. Though shaped like a dueling rapier, the weapon is designed to be a wand first and a blade second. The weapon’s hilt contains a revolving chamber of Dust cartridges, and Weiss uses these to empower her Semblance - much like the quintessential depiction of the Magician channeling the power of the Four Elements. Weiss would be holding the blade high, tip pointed to the sky, as she is ready to summon her Glyphs and reshape her own destiny.

I mean, Edelgard is pretty much a crossover between Weiss Schnee and Daenerys Targayen. The latter is hopefully obvious, but the former…

Let’s just say Weiss Schnee was initially conceived as a character who is the heiress to a family fortune, including a company that holds a monopoly on its market. Said company has also profited from slave labor and as a result is often the target of a liberation group. Weiss herself is pretty racist against the minority whose rights the liberation group (violently) fights for, a character point that gets dropped completely with no explaination in favor of her having… Heterosexual romance drama. Yeah.

Anyway, we later find out that her father is an asshole and abused the entire family. It’s by no means written well, but you wanna know the real kicker? Somehow Weiss still manages to be the better character in all of this IMO since she is at least fairly consistent in her development and does have a somewhat engaging story, even though the execution of it is pretty bad.

White hair, dainty figure. Yeah just make her dress in red and give her contact lenses.

I can't really form an opinion on this because I personally haven't seen her story, but it sounds like.. something! Holy hell what is even happening.

Aura

 I’m sorry but I feel this needs to be said. Aura is by far the most under-used source in RWBY beside dust. Look I get it aura is used to make barriers and fuel semblances but that's it. I mean the semblances are sometimes horrible at best. Especially when they’re passive. Oh my, the worst semblance to me is sadly Qrow’s because anything could happen. You could be enjoying your day and something bad happens because you're there. But that’s minor.

Now some semblances are good. We got semblances that can stop time. We got some that can erase memories. We even got some that can create clones and summon creatures. Too bad summoning things is only in the Schnee department but still. However some of them can be both imitated and surpassed by other characters. For example, Adam, Yang and Tock. Adam creates a wave projectile to slice his enemies. Yang can build and store energy every time she takes damage from enemies and dish it back ten fold. Tock can literally take no damage until her timer goes off. Guess who can copy these abilities? Five characters; Ren, Blake, Fox, Qrow and yes, even Jaune can do it.

Four of these characters have managed to replicate Adam and Yang’s semblances. Blake and Qrow manage to create slashes in the air to launch at their opponents before. Though theirs are not strong as Adam’s they still performed the same function. Fox and Ren can do the same like Yang. I mean, in volume one and two, Ren and Fox made Grimm’s bodies explode. And the sad part about it is Jaune can do all this because of his aura reserves and his semblances. And this is why aura control is needed.

We need characters who are better skilled in aura. I understand semblances are supposed to be unique and tied more to the user but if you were a hunter and you never unlocked your semblance or if you did but it’s not as helpful as you hope, what would be your best source to fight with? Your aura, because so far semblances have been more of let down due to being similar to others. Examples are Harriet and Neon, both being fast characters. Or where it's just in their names. Like Vine with extended limbs; Elm being rooted to the ground; or Clover having good luck. But if you understand the basics and learn more ways to use your aura you can basically do anything. The prime demonstration is Hazel. Nora said herself, Hazel can recharge faster than most people. This means no matter how much damage they dish out Hazel will recover and still keep going.

(Bro I need to say this. Man I’m sorry but in my opinion Hazel is the strongest male character in the RWBY series. Bro, think about it, James was scared of Hazel more than he was of Cinder. And when we saw him fight Salem,… oh my god, these kids were lucky he didn’t really want to fight them because if he did they would all be dead. Like Hazel is the best example of both aura and dust users. He should have stayed alive. Maybe then the kids can finally have a functioning adult in their lives. Hazel solos.)

Okay, after explaining all this, how else can aura be used? Well other than being barriers, slash waving projectiles and a healing factor, it can also be used like haki, chakra or for this show like it was before Salem screwed the world over, magic. But only maidens have magic right? Well let me tell you why I disagree with that statement. But first let's talk about dust.

Dust is the second most under-used source in RWBY. The reason I say secondary is because at least it’s visible in the world. Not only that it is used in weapons, machines, and as ammunition. It is really a natural resource but no one ever uses it in its rawest form. No one except Hazel and maybe Weiss. And what makes it better is they are Remnants of magical elements. Dust in rawest form is more powerful than a gun. And if used properly you can rival maidens.

Maidens are supposed to be special due to them being able to control the elements without the need of dust. However, their power might as well be that of a semblance considering it requires aura to even use. I mean think about it Cinder and Raven. They have used the maiden powers which not only exhausted them as well decreased their aura to the point they break. Not only that they were able to be defeated or in Cinder’s case almost die multiple times. And to prove my case further, Salem is a magic user yet Hazel still killed her multiple times. Hell, Penny was able to beat Cinder even without maiden powers. Basically, the sad truth is the maidens are just keys. If Cinder crossed the wrong person she would be dead. Never mind that if Hazel, Watts and Tyrian wanted to, they actually would have killed her themselves. Especially if she keeps messing up they're plans.

So how does dust increase the use of aura? Well dust is part of the world. And so is the aura. So wouldn’t having more of a connection with the world increase aura and dust efficiency. I mean Vine said aura can be extended. So using the environment itself is good. Just like chakra, if you extend the aura enough to spread across an area enough while using gravity dust you can increase the pressure to keep opponents down. With plant dust trapping your enemies to a certain extent. Heck if you learn to control your aura and merge it with the element you can throw projectiles, create weapons, increase your speed and/or damage output. Effectively uses your whole body as a weapon.

Aura can even be used even without the need of dust. Like with haki it can harden your body against attacks. Extended to where you can locate upcoming enemies. Or when released all at once ,can be used to knock out enemies without engaging in combat.

Look, I am sorry. Please, forgive me but after thinking about this it made me ask this question, “What is a hunter?” Like really what is a hunter because so far this show has disappointed me on the term. We have seen hunters die whether be by non-hunter groups or Grimm who are arguably not that much of a threat. If anything, ordinary people can fight and kill them. Even semblances are starting to become nothing but excuses to why characters act the way they do, like with James who was determined to blow up Mantle because of his ability. Or having basic abilities that other characters should possess like Tyrian’s aura breaking ability. It’s sad really, aura is supposed to be this source of power but it's not as weaponized as I hoped it would be. But that’s my opinion.

Of course, she knows she shouldn’t be getting distracted, yet the bassy crimson that often invites itself into her practices and reprimands her for these private moments of musical reflection has made itself scarce today. Maybe it’s had its fill on all the mistakes she’s made practising already for Festival, or maybe it can tell she’s been doing her best to ignore it in the weeks since unveiling that pain of hers to Yang.

Blake isn’t complaining; she finally gets a moment of solace without his influence, and it’s a peace she savours. Every note she plays twines between each falling flake in a sparse, delicate dance of sound, illustrating an unfinished, undreamt of piece of music that slowly sets an ease in her chest and a warmth in her belly.

There are no wrong notes to mask or grimace at, no tempo to militantly maintain, no image to illustrate to suit an audience that can’t see what she sees.

Nothing to mutilate. Nothing to pervert.

Nothing to reel from. Nothing to crave silence over.

It’s been a long time since Blake’s allowed herself to be enveloped in sound like this. Her sound. It almost warms her heart when she realises it, but just as she does it feels incomplete. There is an audience she would like to share this music — this moment — with, but she’s still on her way with no ETA, thanks in no small part to the icy roads slowing down the already slow buses to an absolutely glacial pace.

Glacial. Yang would have celebrated that pun.
