My 2023 MAMA Thoughts

MAMA seemed less and less relevant and important this year. In fact, awards season really came and went without much fanfare. However, I decided that I will still release my opinions about the 2023 MAMA nominations, just to have an idea in the future of my artist and song preferences from 2023!

As in past years, the first artist/song is my vote based on the nominations presented, and then I talk about my favorite group/song for that category in general. If there isn't one mentioned, then I agree with the nomination selection.

Best Male Group: Tomorrow X Together (just from certain songs alone, I wasn't too keen on any of the nominees this year); I didn't really listen to a lot of boy groups this year, but I suppose if I had to pick, I wish that ATEEZ was nominated (just from a few B-sides)

Best Female Group: NewJeans (they had this year in a chokehold!); I wish Dreamcatcher was nominated (again, I say this every year, but I can dream!)

Best Male Artist: Jungkook (they chose really good songs for his voice!); I wish WOODZ was nominated (his stuff just hits for some reason)

Best Female Artist: Jihyo (her solo album was amazing!!)

Best Dance Performance - Male Group: Stray Kids - “S-Class” (I hate to admit it, but this song really grew on me)

Best Dance Performance - Female Group: Aespa - “Spicy” (very iconic); I wish Dreamcatcher - “Bon Voyage" was nominated (obviously)

Best Dance Performance - Male Solo: Jungkook - "Seven"

Best Dance Performance - Female Solo: Jihyo - "Killin' Me Good"

Best Vocal Performance - Solo: V - "Love Me Again”

Best Vocal Performance - Group: BTOB - “Wind and Wish”

Best Rap & HipHop Performance: Agust D - "People Pt. 2" (feat. IU)

Best Collaboration: Jungkook - "Seven" (feat. Latto); I wish Stray Kids - "Social Path" (feat. LiSA) was nominated (that song rocks)

Best New Male Artist: Xikers (I liked a few songs of theirs)

Best New Female Artist: TripleS (I listened to them so much this year, love the vibes)

Personal Artist of the Year Candidates: Dreamcatcher, LUCY, NewJeans, TripleS

Personal Song of the Year Candidates: Dreamcatcher - "Bon Voyage", LUCY - "Unbelievable", Stray Kids - "Social Path" (feat. LiSA)

SM better does well for SuperM or else 💀💀💀💀 I was hoping for a live performance of Halazia to hear the actual vocals, but almost everyone lipped during Gayo (basically every artist)?! So I'm laughing at Atunas saying they were live, not even Jongho and the rap line. If you can't hear the difference you can even see the lips didn't match come on 🤡 Actually ZFP1 is my fave album! It's cohesive, even though I don't listen to GLB a lot and don't care for ODAAT, other songs are 👌🏻 but many people found the Fever series underwhelming and I kinda get it, like ZFP2 that album is... questionable imo. On the other hand those who became fans during that era say otherwise and don't necessarily vibe with their current sound. You can't please anyone, but I definitely prefer their music pre-Movement era, ngl. Treasure series my beloved 🥰

I'm glad Hwa is getting interested in producing though! But yeah can't have a normal discussion even with people who bias him 🔫
