Happy World Chocolate Day?

Well, not if you're one of the >1.6 million kids slaving away in West Africa (or Brazil or Latin America) for up to 14 hours/day, sometimes literally as slaves, under dangerous conditions, to produce the majority of the chocolate sold by the major candy companies, including Mars Wrigley, Ferrero, Mondelez International, Meiji Co. Ltd., Nestle and Hershey Co.

In 2021, SCOTUS ruled 8-1 that Big Chocolate had no responsibility to ensure that their products were not produced by child laborers.

Fascinated by this Dan / Wobé Initiation Gebande Beggar Mask that is a part of our latest African art and artifacts collection. Brian has been lovingly adding details to each of these items, and learning about them is certainly fascinating. Pieter Jan Vandenhoute, author of “Classification stylistique du masque Dan et Guéré de la Cote d'Ivoire occidentale” (1948), distinguished two large groups of Dan Masks: the Gebande and the Genome. Gebande is the most sacred examples of Dan Masks while Genome is a lower rank of Masks. The classifications relate to the content which the Dan attribute to the Mask, rather than the appearance of the Mask. Gebande Masks can be divided into a series of subgroups and categories, and this particular example is a Beggars’ Mask, whose primary purpose would be to be used in the collection of offerings for ancestors. Hand crafted in forest wood with a decoration of cotton fabric, inlaid with cowry shells and bells in bronze, this example is a true beauty. He also alleged that the crowd had racially abused him.Hassane Junior was representing the football club, Jawahar Mavoor, which was taking part in a Sevens football tournament. The incident unfolded after a video went viral on social media in which several people can be seen chasing Hassane Junior, who is seen scampering on the ground. However, a few spectators said that the incident started when the football player kicked one of them.
