Scifi/odd/mystery indie film rec list
Someone asked me to create rec list of less known/indie scifi/odd/mystery films, and, well, it kind got out of hand. Oopsie. You can thank my hubs who writes a review of all films we've watched. These all have been given at least 3/5 stars from me and/or him. Enjoy!
I'm not fully sure if these films are all indie, but I'm quite convinced you at least haven't heard about most of them:
Another Earth (2011)
Archive (2020. On my Top 10 forever fave film list)
Automata (2014)
Boss level (2020)
Brainstorm (1983)
Breach (2020)
Coherence (2013, SO GOOD)
Color out of space (2019)
Coma (2019, russian, is available with english and german dubbing. Effing gorgeous film)
District 9 (2009)
Donnie Darko (2001)
Dual (2022. Fun fact: it was shot in the town in Finland where I was born)
ExistenZ (1999)
Gattaca (1997)
Girl on the Train (2016, mystery)
Hardcore Henry (2015)
High-Rise (2015, also highly recommend the J.G.Ballard book the film is based on)
Ink (2009. On my Top 10 forever fave films list)
Intrusion (2021)
Melancholia (2011)
Memento (2000)
Minor premise (2020)
Moon (2009)
Oxygen (2021, French)
Pi (1998)
Predestination (2014)
Primer (2004, can’t emphasize enough: this is a MUST for every scifi film buff. Goes without saying, on my Top 10 list)
Prisoners of the Ghostland (2021)
Splice (2009)
Sunshine (2007)
The Blackout (2019, Russian)
The Discovery (2017)
The Endless (2017)
The Invitation (2015)
The Repo-men (2010)
The Trip (2021)
Upgrade (2018)
Upside down (2012, technically fantasy but what the heck. Pretty as hell)
Vivarium (2019)
Westworld (original film from 1973)
Scifi/horror:
Blood red sky (2021, German)
Cube (1997) & Cube 2 (2002) (the rest are meh)
Event Horizon (1997, I wrote a homage to this film into my book :3)
Kyrsyä - Tuftland (2017, Finnish, it’s available online somewhere and en subtitles are available. Might require some digging though)
Additional mentions, not necessary indie films but MUST SEE:
12 Monkeys (1995)
Contagion (2011)
Dune (1984 + the new ones)
Ex Machina (2014)
In time (2011)
Logan’s run (1976)
Old (2021)
Prospect (2018)
Soylent green (1973)
Tetris (2023)
The Andromeda Strain (1971)
A Quiet Place (2018, 2020)
Split (2016, also the whole film series)
In general worth a watch (all basically under odd at least):
All Darren Aronofsky films
All M. Night Shyamalan films
TV shows (not indie, just worth the watch):
Dark Matter (SYFY, 2015-2017. First EP sucks, then it's absolute golden. A kin to Firefly)
The Expanse (Originally Netflix, moved to Amazon. Both TV show AND books. Oh the books are SO GOOD and better than the show imo)
Severance (Apple. I can't yell enough of this. It's just mindbogglingly good)
The X-Files (duh)
Star Trek: The Next Generation (yeah yea, I'm a trekkie)
Star Trek Picard
Resident Alien (SYFY, 2021-)
Foundation (Apple, 2021- *chef's kiss* goes for the books too)

The New Wave
"Cars” (1979) Gary Numan Beggars Banquet Records (Written by Gary Numan) Highest U.S. Billboard Chart Position – No.9
The color I associate with this song is ironically a clear aqua blue, the blue of shimmering pool water pierced by the summer sun—David and I swam there nearly every day.  He was a friend only for that year (I had lots of babysitting money so I was the richer of the two of us). “Cars” was released in 1979 but I don’t think it charted until 1980, so it was that summer, and what a perfect song to bring in that decade of change: the first real new wave record I ever recognized as such.
Well, to be fair, I was 15 and loved music, so my understanding of “new wave” was to come.  What I do remember was running into David’s bedroom with two 45” singles (the other was Paul McCartney’s “Coming Up”, his “new wave” hit) and lifting the hood of the beige portable turntable, the kind with lined box speakers on both sides.  We both knew the song from the radio, but comically we watched it drop down and turn as if a new revelation was to come.  Strangely, it did!  We were transfixed by the single, playing it over and over again many times, each of us doing a zombie jiggle to the Minimoog keyboard break, each, as was apropos, in our own worlds.
It was my first taste of Future Shock – the pop sensibility mixed into Numan’s alien vocals, the minimalism of the arrangement, and the loneliness of the message (I feel safest of all, I can lock all my doors)—well, it matched puberty to perfection.  Staring down into the spinning record could I envision the horror movie called high school ahead of me?  Maybe not.  It was an innocent age, and I am sure I was still wet from the pool, warm and ripened from the sun, and still at my leisure to indulge in these brand-new ideas of space-age isolation.
*As an aside, I have to wonder how influenced Numan was by Daniel Miller’s experimental single “Warm Leatherette” (released under the name The Normal in England in 1978), which was based on J.G.Ballard’s 1973 novel Crash, an apocalyptic study in ennui, horror, and car culture.  Both singles are hard, spare, and minimal, although Numan’s goes nowhere near as edgy or punk in sensibility.  But I jump ahead. “Warm Leatherette”, being an extremely insular single, was much, much further in my future, which I suppose makes “Cars” ever that much more an important moment in synth-pop.  It got to us first.

I can’t believe Hemsworth is a co-chair for the Met Gala this year 🤦🏼‍♂️
Ridiculous. But do you think Tom and his other half will be there? "The Garden of Time" dress code inspired by a short story of J.G.Ballard basically calls his name.
I don’t know. I mean, he has been attending a lot of things lately. But neither of them have anything to promote. She does love a floral so I’m sure she would love to go in a puffy sleeved, floral sequin with a cape. Maybe that’s why she went to every fashion show during London fashion week, getting her fashionista cred out there.

A large neon sign over the entrance listed the latest discount — a mere five per cent — calculated on the volume of turnover. The highest discounts, sometimes up to twenty-five per cent, were earned in the housing estates where junior white-collar workers lived. There, spending had a strong social incentive, and the desire to be the highest spender in the neighborhood was given moral reinforcement by the system of listing all the names and their accumulating cash totals on a huge electric sign in the supermarket foyers. The higher the spender, the greater his contribution to the discounts enjoyed by others. The lowest spenders were regarded as social criminals, free-riding on the backs of others.

BGM: Tears For Fears - Shout
Today I worked early. At lunchtime, I remembered my life itself. In short, my life is strictly connected with the label "autism". I have been lived a troublesome life because of this autism. Therefore, that autism were connected with my identity strongly, and I believed that "because I am autistic, I am unhappy", and also "autistic people must be treated as useless" strictly. Yes, now I can say I was really an idiot clearly. Now I think that autism is one of many personality in myself. In me, there are many essences of my identity. I am a man who loves a woman (in other words, I'm heterosexual), and a Japanese, and also a fan of Haruki Murakami... I don't need to shoulder the label autism. Indeed, I have many troubles because of this autism, but it is also foolish that living this life with that kind of "black or white" thinking.
In 2007, I did a test for checking if I was autistic, and learned how much my IQ could be. I don't want to declare how much it was, but I thought deeply as "the world can be unfair", and also "my life shouldn't be blown by this number of IQ only". Today, a person I know (he says he is "gifted") said that "making the society high IQ people can live happily", and it let me down. I believe that it can be really cruel that judging people by the number of IQ (because it is just a number of every person). At least, I can't see how different this kind of judgement of treating IQ too preciously (and praising high IQ people as amazing) and the notorious "eugenic thought" which had been used as the tool of discrimination (we should see that the action of judging some people as amazing can also be the action of judging the rest of them as less amazing).
I am never smart. At least, I believe that I don't rely on my smartness when I think or feel about something. I think the speed of reacting never be the meaning of smartness. I can do mistakes because I am not Artificial Intelligence. I can think wrong ideas. It is the meaning of the fact I am a human being. I believe humanity from the fact that I am only a human being. One of the differences between Artificial Intelligence and I can be the tenderness based on that humanity (I think I know that how the word "I am tender" can sound proudful and also foolish)... these were the things I thought through Twitter. I believe the humanity I have built by all of the past, and try to be honest to myself. Not being afraid of making mistakes, confessing my opinion. I wanted to do that.
After today's work, I went back to my group home. Today I couldn't read any books (just read Keizo Hino's short stories and essays). Maybe I had thought about the things I wrote above deeply. Enjoying Brian Eno and Yutaka Hirose... Reading the essay about Brian Eno by Keizo Hino, I learned that Hino writes about J.G.Ballard. I never read Ballard's "The Crystal World". A lot of books are still what I have never read... but how long I can live? I can't see. How many times I can watch such beautiful sakura flowers? Indeed, it is still too early. But it is natural that my life is already in a halfway (turning point), so I should live the rest of my life elegantly with using the things I have learned. This idea tells me that my life is really well-made. Until now, I did practice. So from now I will do practical action. I am not gifted, but walk my way.
