Jealousy Contest - Alec Lightwood
Tumblr media Tumblr media
words count: a few
gender neutral reader! x Alec Lightwood
warning: jealous Alec
summary: as soon as Sebastian Verlac crossed the institute's doors Alec knew he brought nothing but trouble, but not for the reason everyone may be thinking...
English is not my first language loves, trying my best, enjoy :)
Tumblr media
As a good writer would write, it all started when a Ravener demon decided to take a walk around New York.
It was a normal evening, like any other at the institute when the news came and the Lightwood-Harondale trio was sent to solve the problem; their usual partners, y/n and Clary, were busy running after a Shax demon (something y/n hated as much as doing laundry) two blocks too far away to be involved.
"I just don’t feel good about this" Alec mumbled, slowly making his way towards an ally, bow raised in front of him as his steps were careful.
"We follow orders, Alec" Jace sighed "he’s right big bro and-" a sudden turn to the left "it’s not like y/n and Clary are not capable of defending themselves" Izzy finished.
"I still don’t believe it’s a good-", but he didn't get to finish; the loud cry of a man interrupting him mid sentence.
The three immediately felt the sudden urge to run as Alec’s feet guided him: he turned around the corner, to the right, to the left, to the right again, and there he stood, the blood in his veins dry: y/n was on the ground, a cut as long as Jace’s blade on her left side, but it didn’t belong to a blade, its darkish spots of venom visible as the Ravener stood in front of her, ready to go for another hit.
Someone was with her and it was not Clary.
The figure stood forward, a blade as shining as the moon was in his hand as he cut the demon’s feet.
The beast crying in agony as it fell forward, knocking the stranger to the ground.
"Alright, now I am angry" he heard y/n mutter as their will helped them on their feet again, a tight hand pressed on their side, they were trying to show as little pain as possible.
It took a second, he didn’t have the time to process, as he saw them took a couple of daggers from behind their back, their hands holding the weapons tightly as they threw themselves at the beast.
As soon as the daggers sinked into the demon’s stomach, Alec’s harrow hit the creature in its head, its body falling still on the ground as he saw them turn towards him.
The daggers falling to the ground as he heard them chuckle: "I can’t keep doing your work Lightwood" and he watched, horrified, their body falling to the ground, eyes shocked as they landed in the arms of the stranger.
What Alec found out later was that the stranger in question, was a shadow hunter, worse, he was a man: Sebastian Verlac was his name and he was far from being discrete.
It was obvious the guy had a crush on y/n, he saw it from the way his eyes followed their figure every time they left a room, or how he would make sure to have breakfast at their table every morning, a stupid grin on his face when they laughed.
It started to be very ridiculous and Alec himself for some strange reason was starting to get sick of it.
When he entered the training room that afternoon, he felt himself roll his eyes.
Y/n and Sebastian were training in a way it looked more like flirting.
He touched them in ticklish spots, his words a continuous tease, his eyes a staring mess.
Alec coughed, hard, which got their attention, eyes shooting his way.
Sebastian was quick to react, his eyes kindly drifting back to y/n, "guess I’ll go, I’ve won enough for today", y/n’s quick remark "ah! You wish"as the blond made his way towards the door Alec felt the sudden urge to punch him.
"I want a rematch then" Sebastian said, smiling, before disappearing into the institute’s many corridors.
Y/n’s eyes were back on Alec as he came forward, "you look pissed" they stated as he took two training sticks from the weapon’s section.
"How about we train?" He asked, his eyes sharp as he threw one in y/n’s direction.
"Alright serious boy" they snorted grabbing the stick, legs in position.
He was the first to come forward, his legs strong as he aimed for y/n’s stomach but they were quick to stop him halfway.
Alec seemed determined as he came forward again, a shot for their shoulder, they dodged, a aim for their leg, they stopped him again as y/n pushed the stick back to Alec’s face.
"More than pissed I guess", Alec chuckled darkly as he turned into position "this is called training" he spat, his gray shirt sticky on his torso.
Y/n felt like giggling "what is going on with you?", "how about a hand to hand?" Alec replied, kicking the stick aside as you followed his moves, not failing to see his hands were trembling.
"Something was in your latte this morning" y/n teased as Alec pushed himself forward, a hand flying in the air as they dodged his punch "actually, I go for black coffee" his body as stiff as a log.
He tried to take y/n down again, legs following his moves swiftly, this time he got a open shot as he grabbed them by the shoulder, his arms wrapping around their throat as he held tight behind their back.
"This is called winning" he slowly loosed the grip, as y/n’s eyes lightened with amusement "so you’re jealous".
"What?" He asked, coming to the front again, his eyes everywhere but on them, "you really are jealous" y/n couldn’t help but laugh as the man was clearly uncomfortable.
"As future head of the institute, it is my duty to show you how to properly train" Alec was quick to react, his eyes finally meeting y/n’s as they softly smiled.
"Sure, future head of the institute, this is clearly what this is all about".
"It is."
Y/n sighed: "How about a rematch?" They asked.
"Can’t, gotta go" Alec replied quickly, his legs taking him as far away from y/n as possible.
"Don’t go make a scene to Sebastian too!" Y/n laughed as Alec cursed under his breath, hurting to disappear, maybe, if he left quick enough, it would have been as if nothing happened.
Y/n felt themselves softly smiling: "Head of the institute? More like lover boy".

Bracelet
Summary: You are forced to forget the shadow world and Jace is distraught.
Genre: Angst, fluff and a little bit of smut.
Word Count: 1,388
—————————————————
I walk down memory lane late at night, I end up losing my way every time.
You sat down next to Jace on his bed and gently leant your head on his shoulder. Then you wrapped your arms around his waist the warmth spreading comfort through Jace’s body. Your presence grounded and centred him. You were the rain that quelled his fire; you kept him in check; you were his rock. The only person he could unconditionally count on for endless love and support.
“What’s wrong?” you asked, careful not to rock the boat. Jace was never very open, a quality the two of you shared, you didn't want to push the topic.
“I just feel hopeless. Clary’s missing and there's nothing I can do to help.” Jace hung his head in sorrow but you lifted it up by the chin making sure his eyes were looking into yours.
“Jace, ” you started, ”there’s nothing any of us can do right now so don't blame your self. Plus Clary can look after herself. She's not defenceless anymore.” your words gave him comfort, despite his constant worry.
He often doubted himself, you always showed him he had no reason to. You made him the best version of himself.
Your lips slowly descended on Jace’s when everything went black.
Jace woke up. The small smile on his lips fading as he patted the empty space next to him. He almost forgot you were gone. Despite everything, he had to carry on. He looked at the space next to him with longing before putting a short on and heading out of your room. He walked down the halls of the institute when another memory flashed in his mind.
I wake up missing you more every time.
Jace carried you down the hall, stopping to pin you against the wall and kiss you hungrily. He ran his hand up your thigh stopping to play with the hem of your dress. He soon moved it under your dress rubbing circles around your inner thigh, teasing you.
You moved his hand closer to your entrance then ran it up his arm, tracking the bicep. Soon you moved your hand into his hair gently pulling on it, eliciting a moan from Jace who was now playing you through your underwear. You smirked into the kiss, satisfied with your work.
“Jace,” his name wounded ethereal on your lips, ”as much and I would love to have sex with you right this second.” you paused again rest to the resume your sentence but Jace best you to it.
“I know the party's nearly finished.” he carried on kissing you taking breaks to speak, ”I just can't resist you.” He slipped a finger into your entrance and you let out a loud moan. Jace revelled in the sound by inserting another finger creating more moans as your grip on his hair tightened.
As you heard footsteps down the hall you and Jace gave each other panicked looks. Both of you kissing and smiling all the way, Jace picked you up again and carried you to his room. Making sure to close the door.
Jace shook his head and carried on walking.
Soon Jace got to the briefing room of the institute only to find Simon waiting for him. ‘Shit,’ he thought ‘I thought Clary asked me to train him.’ He forced a smile on his face and approached Simon.
“So are you ready?” Jace asked while beckoning Simon to follow to the training room.
“I am ready and rearing to go,” Simon said excitedly. Jace only sighed and entered through the door. He picked up two bo staffs tossing one to Simon when another memory flashed through his mind.
Oh why did I say goodbye
“Jace,” you choked out with tears in your eyes, “I’m slowly getting de-runed. The angels they were going to do it to Clary but I couldn’t let them. Her talents can be used in so many ways to better our world. I-I told them to take me instead.” You screamed in pain as another rune disappeared off your skin.
“I don’t understand.” Jace knitted his brows together. “Just because your de-runed doesn’t change anything” He desperately searched your eyes for some confirmation that everything was going to be alright.
“I won’t remember anything, not the shadow world, not the institute. Not you. It’s a warning to Clary. If she doesn't obey it’ll happen to every single one of you as well until she's the only one left. Jace, I need you to keep her from doing anything stupid. Don’t let my sacrifice be in vain.” you explain clutching his shoulders as another wave of pain shot through you.
“No this can’t happen,” Jace sobbed, “I can’t lose you.”
You took a step back and took off your bracelet. Jace gave it to you when he first told you he loved you. Not only was it a treasured gift from Jace but it also glowed when demons were present so you’d always be safe; even when you weren’t with him. You passed Jace the bracelet. He eyed you with fear in his eyes.
“I want you to keep it. To remember me by. Never forget, I love you.” Your declaration was punctuated by another rune disappearing, paired with another shriek. “I have to go”
I used to ave you now I have this bracelet.
Jace briefly looked and your bracelet shook his head and faced Simon. He got into a combat stance waiting for Simon to attack but he didn’t.
“You were thinking about Y/N weren’t you?” Simon asked and Jace nodded in response. “We all miss her, but you need to try and move on.”
“I am trying,” Jace gritted his teeth and struck the first blow. Simon easily blocked it with his staff.
“No, you’re not!” Simon countered, “I know you’ve been going to see her shows and leaving flowers in her dressing room. Move on!”
“I’m always glamoured and she doesn’t have the sight anymore so she can’t see me. What does it matter?” Jace asked dropping his staff in defeat.
“If you keep seeing her you’ll never move on.” Simon paused, “look she’s got another show tonight, just promise me you won’t go.”
“Jace took a deep breath steadying his voice and heart rate, “I promise.”
I let you go but baby I’m gonna wear it
Jace looked down at the bracelet on his wrist and back up at the theatre. Your show was about to start. Glamoured he stood at the back of the crowd admiring your performance of one of his favourite plays. It was his favourite because you showed it to him.
After the show ended he placed the flowers in your room. His breath hitched as he saw you walking in. He made a break for the door slipping past you.
“Hey,” you shouted after him. He turned around his expression softened at the sight of you. “Are you the one who’s always leaving me flowers?”
Until I don’t need to
You took a step closer as Jace questioningly pointed at himself.
You gigged, “yes you,” your voice was light and tender as you smiled. You were exactly as he’d remembered.
“You can see me,” Jace breathed out. His heart beating faster the closer you got to him. He should have listened to Simon.
“Of course I can see you,” you replied, “why do you sound so surprised?”
You kept getting closer and closer until you were right in front of Jace. His heart pounding in his chest. He wanted to hold you, to kiss you, but he couldn't. You don’t remember him.
You were now staring at the bracelet on his wrist. Your head started to hurt as a memory flashed through your mind.
You spoke, “that bracelet I thought I’d lost it.” you looked back at him. “You, I recognise you.” You didn’t stop staring at him. You couldn’t. Your eyes traced his blonde locks and finally settled on his heterochromatic eyes.
Jace marvelled at your features. They were even more beautiful than before.
Finally, you spoke up again. A huge pain ripped through your head as you uttered out his name, “Jace?” All of a sudden the searing pain stopped as the man in front of you broke out into a grin.
“Y/N”

"You must be Clary."
To say that when Clary had been flung head first into the world of Shadowhunters, and especially after her and Simon had gotten so much backlash and been treated like outcasts for being human, she would see another human so comfortable in the institute, was an understatement. But... that's what this man had to be. He had none of the marks on him that the other Shadowhunters had. Runes. And when he set down the seraph blade he was fiddling with, it didn't glow when it touched his skin. There was that same heaviness to him that all Shadowhunters seemed to have, like he carried a heavy burden, but the darkness that seemed so inherent in these people was missing from him completely.
Clary was instantly intrigued. "Yes." Her head tilted, eyes narrowing as a smile rose to her face. "And you are?" She had been given the general tour - the entire time feeling daggers in her back as Alec glared at her. Seeing this man was a relief. There was no distance or judgement or anything in his eyes or the way he addressed her. He saw her as an equal, and his warm and welcoming smile filled her heart with relief. She opened up and relaxed immediately.
The man didn't seem to pick up on it. His eyes didn't analyze her, seeing every move she made and breath she took. That was a relief too. "I'm Y/n." It seemed his voice came slowly, after pauses, but it was really just the adrenaline wearing off as her brain finally calmed down, she realized... Although, he may be speaking soothingly, calmly, with clear diction. As if he knew her mind was currently spinning on its axel like a basketball on a finger. "You finding your way around okay? I can give you the tour if you want."
Clary almost laughed out loud. She would love nothing more than to have gotten the tour from Y/n instead. Damn. "No, I already got it. Jace gave it to me."
"With Alec trailing along glumly, I'm sure," Y/n remarked half under his breath. His smile was playful as he turned a pointed look to Alec.
It was at that point that Clary became aware that she wasn't the only one who relaxed around Y/n. Simon was breathing normally for the first time, even enough to look away from the people he'd watched like hawks - as if he looked away they would attack him. Izzy wasn't much different, but leaned against the wall and enjoyed watching Y/n call out her brother. For once she didn't seem to need to strut or demand her place in the room. She just had one. Jace had moved closer to Y/n, an almost-smile dancing at the edges of his lips. It was a wild expression to see on his face - a face that had been twisted with confusion, startled intrigue, or frustration since the very first second Clary had known him. Even Alec was no longer glaring, and had instead eased into more of a mocking, teasing, bantery flow.
"I'm not exactly happy that-"
"A human is in the institute?" Y/n cut off, eyebrow raising. Whatever doubts Clary might have had about Y/n being human, they were dashed immediately with that response. And Alec's follow up didn't help.
"Well you're different," he rushed, shrugging as if it was obvious.
Y/n seemed to find that funny. "Different how?"
Alec didn't have a response for that, so he changed the subject. "Well since you're both so familiar, why don't you give her the run down instead? Jace has a mission report to turn in."
That made Y/n chuckle. He didn't get a response out though, before Simon piped up. "Okay but actually I do want to address that. Why is Y/n okay and chill and whatever, but Clary who actually does belong here isn't? And why am I? Does Y/n have crazy skills or something?"
Y/n turned his smile toward Simon, and even as he paused to sigh, no one else spoke. Like his movement had captivated everyone in the room. He commanded an air that left no room for those around him to question who had the most authority in the room. Izzy wore her power on the tips of her fingers - delicate, quick, and strong. A grip that didn't let you go. Alec wore his power on his shoulders - stiff, solid, and broad. A firm and dependable form that didn't waver. Jace wore his power in his jaw - grating, tense, and locked. A surging wave of force that didn't cease. Y/n... he wore his power on his lips. In his smile; dancing out with his words; wrapping around you as he spoke; catching your eyes as he moved; pulling you forward as he opened his mouth. All he had to do was intend to respond and everyone was ready to hear what he would say.
"No crazy skills," Y/n responded, and it was like a slow motion reel had shot back into normal time again. Clary let go a breath that she didn't realize she was holding. "I can see through the mist and that was enough to throw them for a loop. Now I'm just good at keeping everything in order and such. Do a lot of cleaning and cooking. Putting books in the right place in the library. Running errands. The such. I can go wherever I want, whenever I want, and I won't tip anyone off due to any tattoos or odd behavior." Despite herself, Clary laughed along with Y/n as if she had been cued. Some part of her wasn't surprised when she heard Simon do the same.
Clearing his throat as he remembered himself, Simon tried to keep sturdy and questioning. Tried to play the outraged, and protective. "So you're an intern?"
Y/n's eyes shone with amusement. "Something like that. I'm a great fighter but can't use any of the weapons needed to kill demons so I'm basically useless in the field. However - I'm a great sparring partner. It's more that I'm just a great convenience. I keep things running a lot more smoothly. Encourage people to take a break and relax. Building that healthy atmosphere. Keeping minds clear and helping people stay well rested. More... a mom friend than an intern."
After a second, Simon nodded. "That's kind of cool."
"It's super awesome," Y/n agreed.
Clary found herself still curious though. "You said you're a great fighter. Did they teach you?"
Izzy was the one who responded here - and Clary found that subconsciously, she knew Izzy would. That Y/n preferred not to speak about it. That he'd rather someone else filled in what they knew from an outside perspective. "He sort of showed up out of nowhere about ten years ago. Really young, taken heavy damage, and gripping a mace. Mumbling about monsters with evil in their eyes and darkness on their tongue."
Clary's eyes widened. "Demons?"
Y/n nodded. "There are other monsters in this world - the kind from stories almost completely forgotten. The mist protects the Institute from mundanes the same way it protects them from these monsters. I fought those monsters for years, but my mace was only made for them. I didn't have any holy metals for demons, and meeting them for the first time was... startling."
"Wait how can monsters be separate from demons?" Simon asked.
"The same way that Gods are separate from angels," Y/n responded without missing a beat. "Demons and the such - the underworld - are all spawned from angels, and their opposites. Monsters were created from the Earth itself, same as humans were, but were created at a different time with different plans and different intentions. The metals that kill monsters couldn't hurt a human, but they also wouldn't hurt a demon or any of those related." He chucked lightly. "It's a little complicated."
Clary frowned. "You say it almost like... there are other people like you. People who fight the monsters."
Y/n smirked. "Good catch, Clary. There are." He hesitated a moment then added, "My mother's side of the family are monster hunters. We've always protected people from the monsters the same way Shadowhunters protect people from demons and their related parties."
"Then why are you here and not with them?" Simon seemed lost on his curiosity, and completely missed the way Alec, Izzy, and Jace simultaneously went rigid. Clary sucked in a silent breath, almost ready for Y/n to completely lose it with those reactions.
He didn't. He did tense, his voice a little strained just barely, but he still retained that easy relaxation he had held this entire time. The ease he reflected onto other people, making them relax too. Even now he seemed to be just fine, and if Clary hadn't seen the other three react she wouldn't have known better as he responded, "Those in my family start very young and aren't expected to live very long. It was... demoralizing to just be treated like a weapon. A line of defense, or an errand boy to be sent to deal with the problems the important people couldn't. Here, I'm a person. And I can help others feel like people too." He smiled and the tension in the room dissipated. "And... I suppose at the risk of being cheesy, I can admit that there is definitely someone specific worth staying for."
His eyes trailed smoothly to Jace and Clary's eyes widened.
Oh.
Jace cleared his throat, his lips finally curling into that smile he had been repressing before. "How about we talk about this more over dinner? Do you still need to prepare anything Y/n, or-?"
"It's all ready to go." Y/n motioned forward and when everyone began to walk, he stepped in time with them. He ended up next to Simon to immediately launched into-
"So you keep calling it the Mist. Is that the thing that keeps most people from seeing what's actually happening? Like a filter? The others don't use that word."
Clary tuned out. She thought about how nice it was to be around Y/n. How everyone had become so much more pleasant and warm the second he was around. She was grateful every second she spent here, that he was there with her. And she had known then that they would be friends, but was still surprised at just how much she would come to truly love and care about him. How big of a part of her life he would become.
She might be looking for her mom, But until she found her, Y/n was very good at filling the hole that she left behind. Soon, the Institute became a home. And Clary didn't mind it like she thought she would.
Even when she got thrown for another spin when she found out that Valentine was her father, and Jace... was her brother.
One step at a time, Clary. Handle it one step at a time.
-
"This is not a good idea."
Clary felt the room's temperature drop several degrees. Her eyes wide, she looked over at Y/n. He stood in the doorway, and seemed to take up every part of it, even though she knew he was smaller built than Jace was. Y/n had always had this effect, taking up more space and seeming bigger than he actually was. But it was usually comforting. Like a blanket, or the arms of a parent. Now...
For the first time since Clary had met him, Y/n looked angry. His face was set - cold and firm as stone. His eyes were hard, the color dark and his gaze piercing. He had been the best at controlling and expressing his emotions. His softness and comfort came through even when Clary had a break down because of the mind games Valentine was playing. His understanding and forgiveness did not falter when Jace left them for Valentine, lost in his own head, and then came stumbling home in a mess. He did not even miss a beat or have to catch his breath when Izzy got addicted to vampire blood or Simon got turned into a vampire and then could walk in the daylight, or Magnus crashed Alec's wedding and they kissed in the middle of the ceremony.
To see him so different now was more than just shocking. Clary realized that she had come to believe very deeply that Y/n didn't get angry. He didn't lose control. That wasn't the case of course now. He he looked like the edge of a steel blade. Sharp, dangerous, and merciless.
The only one in the entire room of supernatural beings that could respond to the mere human was Izzy of all people.
"It's the only plan we have. We need that necklace."
Y/n's jaw worked. He had not been there for the conversation as far as Clary knew - and if Y/n could be unnoticed in a room he was in, she would be surprised to find out - but he didn't question her or seem confused on the severity of the situation. They had been talking for the last hour about how there had been an old myth about a weapon that was just as affective as a seraph blade. One that could be used by anyone - even humans. Y/n's life had been out in danger in all the break ins and had almost died several times. It was thanks to his agility that he hadn't been lost altogether. So of course most of them were driven to find the weapon so that Y/n could finally be able to properly defend himself. But... the sword was locked in a vault that could only be unlocked with an amulet that was hoarded by a clan of vampires.
Vampires that were feral, unhinged and near animalistic. Raphael had tried to go in and make negotiations and had lost three people trying to get out. These vampires... they weren't like any others any of the Shadowhunters had met. At best they'd just have to do a raid and hope for the best. With the numbers though, it didn't look good.
With Jace leading the mission, there was no question as to why Y/n would be against it. That's why they hadn't included him. He was bias, and would stop them. They needed to do this.
So how had he found them, and how did he seem to know all of the things they had tried so hard to hide from him?
Finally Y/n spoke. "Fine."
Every pair of eyes in the room went a mile wide. "Fine?" Izzy asked, whispering as if she spoke too loud it would break the very obviously thin level of self control Y/n was using.
Y/n just shrugged. "I do not want you to go because it will put the people I love in extreme danger. You have to go so that in the future, I will not be in as extreme amounts of danger as U've been in up until now. To ask you not to go, not to chase this, would be like asking myself not to worry when you guys leave tonight." He sighed. "You're going to go anyway. It's not like you'll take me with you to help. So." Then he shrugged, not looking at anyone before turning and leaving the room.
Jace swallowed, turning to face the others. "It'll all be better and fixed when we come back and have the sword so Y/n can defend himself. For now, we have a mission to focus on. Come on."
Both men were right - there was nothing else to say right now. So they left, heading to the run down and abandoned church the vampires were stationed in. There were catacombs underneath the church that the vampires actually lived in. They had booby trapped it and even if they hadn't, all the twists and turns made it near impossible for any outsider to have even equal playing field in a battle - let alone the upper hand. It would be down to timing, coordination, skill... and luck.
To be fair to everyone present, they lasted a very long time before things went terribly wrong.
When it did go to absolute shit though, everyone was pretty sure they were all absolutely done for. Well, at least, until Y/n showed up.
“Drop your weapons.” There was no roughness or authority in his voice when he gave the command like there usually was when he inputted into something. His voice was too smooth and melodic for that. So beautiful it almost hurt to hear. All of them - including the vampires - were so distracted by the wonderful sound, and especially about hearing it again, that they obeyed. It made no sense, but completely juman normal mundane boy Y/n waltzed into the middle of the battle. His hand bounced from vampire to vampire, finger tips tracing skin to keep them focused on him. “Go to sleep. You’ve been fighting these mean people who came into your land and demanded a price that was too high. I’ll take care of them. It’s okay.”
As if in a trance, the vampires all floated off.
Y/n reached into the crypt, yanking out the sword the Shadowhunters had been going after. They had been close to getting it when the plan had gone to hell after they were found out. Now he held it tightly, knuckles white and eyes tense with anxiety as he turned to his friends. “Back to the car. Quickly.”
“What just...” Clary managed, voice too airy - like she couldn’t quite catch her breath.
“Not now,” Y/n snapped. “Back to the safety of the institute first. My charm won’t last long and I don’t know if I can appeal to their natural impulses like that again without catching them off guard.”
They all filed into the car, and headed back to the institute. It wasnt until they were safe inside and huddled around in a circle that they all felt part of their bodies again. They had been floating before... almost detached, content to sit and obey and smile.
Alec was displeased. “What was that?” He demanded.
Y/n sighed. “Okay so... I sort of lied when I first came here.”
“What?” Jace was the one to speak up next. He had been lied to by so many people, so many times... if this was another manipulation.... he wouldn’t be able to handle it. He already felt his heart squeezing in his chest.
Y/n shot him a regretful, apologetic look. “I beg that you guys at least try to understand. You’re all half angel - you believe in one God. Waltzing in and telling you that there’s actually an entire pantheon... it was a lot. Not to add that I’m the child of one of those Gods-“
“You’re a demigod?” Simon squeaked.
Y/n winced. “Well... Yeah. My dad is human, but my mom is a goddess. She’s the reason I can see through the Mist. Her side of the family - all like me. We have ADHD and dyslexia because we’re built for power and battle, not sitting still and paying attention. I mean, my eyes were meant for Greek, not English. A lot of weird shit is kind of going on here.”
Izzy’s eyebrows furrowed. “Do gods often have kids?”
“Most of them,” Y/n answered. “I have a lot of cousins.”
“Which Pantheon are we working with?” Came the next question, from Clary.
Y/n chuckled, shaking his head. “That’s a little complicated to say. I mean, all of the pantheons coexist in different ways. Sometimes as completely separate beings, or sometimes as different sides to the same coins. When my mother had me, she was her Greek self - Aphrodite. So I take after that part of her.”
“And that’s what you did earlier when you bosses us around and we all just... listened?” Izzy’s eyes were wide, but with awe more than anything.
Y/n smiled at her enthusiasm. As the shock wore off, everyone else seemed to be following the same general emotional path as well. Except Jace... he stayed silent and became impossible to read. Y/n tried not to focus on it. Jace needed time to process and everyone else had questions that needed answers until then. “That’s what I call Charm Speak. If I really try, I can sway someone into doing what I want them to do. I’ve never used it on any of you,” he added quickly as their eyes all went very wide. “I had a lot of people only like me because I was pretty or popular, and I spent a lot of time surviving off of the fact that I had this ability. I hate it. I wanted real friends and family and relationships - I wanted everything we experienced tl be voluntary.”
Alec nodded, relaxed a lot more than he was earlier. “It’s not far from what we are. You still-“
“Y/n, can we talk?” Jace finally piped up. Everyone else fell silent. “In private,” he added.
Y/n nodded and the two branches off and walked a little to be in complete privacy. “I’m... I’m sorry Jace,” Y/n whispered as they came to a stop, but still stayed quiet.
Jace swallowed, looking at his boyfriend. “I just need to know two things. I love you because of my own volition, right?” Y/n nodded immediately, and the earnest honesty in his eyes set Jace very much at ease. “And your love... for me... is the same? It’s not a byproduct from your mom being the Goddess of Love and all?”
Of all the things Jace could have been worried about, Y/n had not in a million years thought it would be that. “Of course.” He smiled a little, amused by memories as he thought back to what seemed another lifetime. “In fact, my siblings were never ones for serious relationships or actually falling in love. It was a sort of initiation to get someone to fall in love with us and then totally break their heart. Proved your place or whatever. I mean... Aphrodite is the goddess of lust and she thrives off of being beautiful and yearned for and such. She isn’t really the goddess of love - that Eros’ thing. Very big misconception.”
Jace smiled, amused at his boyfriend’s nerdiness showing. “Okay.”
“Okay?” Y/n raised an eyebrow at him, checking if this is what he thought it was.
Jace chuckled. He seemed absent of any of the worries and darkness of before. “Honestly Y/n, we just have a lot more in common now. I get to know more about you. You never talk about your family... I don’t mind this. Alec was right - we’re descended from angels. Clary’s sad is a terrorist. My parents are dead. Alec and Izzy’s dad is a dick and they’re barely forming a relationship with the only remaining adult in any of our lives. I... love you even more, if anything else.”
Y/n moved close to him, cupping his face for a moment before pulling into a slow, sweet kiss. Jace held his boyfriend around the waist, pulling their bodies as close as possible.
“I love you too,” Y/n whispered after they parted.
It was all that needed to be said. A new chapter of their relationship had begun, and they got to explore it together.
