Ben Chatham was too niche to ever become known outside one forum but it's the My Immortal of Doctor Who. It was a series starring the writer's self-insert companion, Ben Chatham, and I guess it started with his fanfic version of series 2 (not sure if it's still online anywhere, but there's a summary), where Jackie dies of cancer bc the author thought chavs shouldn't be allowed on Doctor Who & the Doctor murders a hamster. His stories are full of random grim moments, and no one is ever heroic, since everyone just dies until UNIT can save the day. Ben Chatham is gay and a military-loving Tory. He reintroduced Adam and Jack over the course of the season bc he didn't like writing women doing or saying things and bc he felt Rose was too lower class to be allowed on television
I think I first learned about him when he posted his pitch for Matt Smith's first story:
"Martha Jones is walking down the cobbled street of the Cornish village of Little Bampton towards the local Inn, pondering why UNIT had sent her to investigate the strange sightings nearby and disappearances. Since entering into full time investigative work for UNIT in the UK following the events of Journey’s End she had never been so bored by a case. Nothing has happened in the three weeks that she had been in the village and she found the locals distasteful and she suspected some of the older ones were rather prejudiced.
Suddenly there is a familiar sound and she sees the TARDIS materialise in front of her. She grins excitedly as the door is flung open: “DOCTOR……….OH” she shouts as instead of the Doctor, a slip youth with floppy hair emerges, dressed in jeans and a casual jacket. “Who are you? Wheres the Doctor” she exclaims. “Hey babe, I’m like the Doctor. I’ve regenerated like. Wow its great to see you again. Wicked!”Martha is perturbed:
“But you’re so….. So much younger.” “Yay its great to be a kid again. I’m like so gonna get a myspace page. You look great in that jacket babe, I’ve like SO got the hots for you. Hows about we get up close and personal on the TARDIS double bed.” The Doctor coyly lets his floppy hair descend over his eyes."
There's a lot going on here, but my fave parts are picturing Matt Smith saying "Hey babe, I'm like the Doctor" and the fact that Martha internally refers to the events of Journey's End as the events of Journey's End. I've accepted ever since that Martha Jones can sense episode titles; she was just out there living her life until she suddenly sees a vortex and the words "THE STOLEN EARTH" floating in the air and groans at having to do this again
Also, in the Chatham canon, Martha hates going on adventures and loves to whine and do nothing. Just like everyone else. Meanwhile the Eleventh Doctor is a horny freak who wants to fuck and post to MySpace. Both of them despise poor people
This story also features the Russian mob whose leader, named Ivan, has henchmen named Ivan, bc he could only think of one Russian name.
Was the writer of this serious or a troll? We will never know. Certainly he was surrounded by trolls. He got an entire subforum quarantining promoting his stories, and there were fanfics of his fanfic, made by trolls whose sincerity was also, for many years, in doubt (they were trolls)
What we do know is that the writer repeatedly insisted it was canon, and wrote a letter to Doctor Who Magazine demanding more coverage of his OC. They sent him a lengthier letter he posted on forum but in the magazine all they said was
"Er…who?"
Which just about sums it up

I may do exclusively one liners as my brain is not in the right place right now though.

Mary Lacy - female sailor and shipwright
Mary Lacy (everything here is based on her self-written biography and should therefore be viewed with caution) was born on 12 January 1740. Although she came from a very poor family, she was quite educated and could even read and write. Although she had to help support her family through manual labour from an early age, she was finally sent to work as a servant in a household at the age of 12. The work there did not make her happy and so she packed her bags, disguised herself as a young man and disappeared to Chatham in 1759.
Tumblr media
Mary Lacy, The female shipwright, 1800 (x)
There, as William Chandler, she became assistant to the Carpenter of HMS Sandwich, a newly launched ship of the line with 90 guns. From him she learned everything she needed for the carpenter's trade, even if her master was not always pleased with her. But she managed to make a name for herself among the men by winning boxing matches. However, she began to develop rheumatoid arthritis at an early age. This sent her to the sickbay for a long time. Fortunately, the Sandwich was on blockade duty off Brest, so she was able to recover in peace. Unfortunately, there are no detailed records of Mary's work on board as she skilfully omitted this from her biography. What she did recount was that a very strong storm repeatedly damaged the ship's main mast, forcing her back to the Plymouth for repairs. In November, it was the storm that held up the Sandwich until two days after Admiral Hawke caught up with and destroyed the French fleet in the Bay of Quiberon, one of the great victories of the English Navy. So Mary did not take part in the battle that ended the threat of a French invasion of England, but the war continued and the blockade of the French coast continued.

In 1760, when the Sandwich returned to Portsmouth, Mary was transferred to the hospital as she was again suffering from a severe rheumatic attack, she was under treatment but no one knew of her true sex. Somewhat to her chagrin, the Sandwich sailed without her, so she signed on with HMS Royal Sovereign, 100 guns. Like many men and women at sea, Mary suffered from scurvy. Although the Royal Sovereign was stationed in an English port, which meant that the crew would be supplied with fresh meat and vegetables, there was never enough to prevent the dreaded disease from affecting the men. The boatswain on board the Royal Sovereign. took fatherly care of Mary, and it was here that she was able to attend school on board, where she learned to "cast accompts [sic]". After a full year and nine months on board the ship, without having gone ashore once, the crew was finally paid off and discharged in December 1762.  Ashore in Portsmouth, Mary soon decided to begin an apprenticeship with a ship's carpenter. But after the signing of the peace treaty with Paris on 10 February 1763, many men had returned home and were looking for work. Nevertheless, Mary persisted.

Normally, a shipwright's apprenticeship was passed down from father to son. But in the spring of 1763, still pretending to be a man, Mary Lacy managed to learn a new trade. As an apprentice, she worked alternately in the dockyard or on a ship and thus learned the trade. Eight years after Mary Lacy left home, she received permission to visit her parents.  She was now twenty-seven. She found her family very well off and did not mention in her writing what her family thought of her living as a man. Only her family and a few close family friends knew the true identity of the visiting sailor. One of these family friends, a Mrs Low, later moved to Portsmouth, and although she had promised Mary never to reveal her secret, the woman began to tell anyone who would listen that William Chandler was a woman.  For several more years Mary managed to dispel the rumours about her gender, even going so far as to flirt with women and find herself a girlfriend to spend several months with without revealing her sex.

Mary Lacy (detail) (x)
Finally, in the spring of 1770, after seven years of working towards it, Mary Lacy received her certificate and was officially declared a ship's carpenter.  For the first time, she received a living wage, even if the money was paid slowly. However, Mary's rheumatism kept flaring up, and finally, towards the end of 1771, with the help of a family lawyer friend, she applied for and received an invalid pension from the Navy as a woman. Mary Lacy, commonly referred to as Mrs Chandler according to the Navy Department, received twenty pounds a year. She published her memoirs The Female Shipwright in 1773 which brought her some money. But a year earlier she married the shipwright Josias Slade with whom she had 6 children by 1784, of whom only her first-born daughter and her last-born son reached adulthood. Both of them tried to get higher positions as servants in the dockyard, but their efforts were ignored. Mary finally died in 1801 and was buried at St Paul's, Deptford, Kent on 3 May 1801. Her husband, died in 1814 and was buried in St Paul's, Deptford, Kent, on 13 February 1814.

"One Is Held In Attempted Chatham Jail Delivery," Windsor Star. October 28, 1943. Page 3 & 6. --- D. J. Payne Of Windsor Is Arrested ---- Governor Nabs Man as He Tries to Climb Wall and Fires Upon Waiting Car ---- From Chatham Bureau of The Windsor Star CHATHAM, Ont., Oct. 28. - What is believed to have been an attempt to break into the Kent County jail here and release one or more prisoners from the cells was broken up about 11:15 last night by Phillip Daigneau, governor of the jail, who caught Danny James Payne, of Windsor, allegedly climbing over the jail wall, and fired several shots at a waiting car which then sped away in the darkness toward Windsor.
GIVEN REMAND Payne was remanded without plea until next Wednesday by Magistrate Ivan B. Craig in Chatham police court this morning on a charge that he "did assist Allen Baldwin and Franklin Smith in an attempted escape from lawful custody in Kent county jail."
Baldwin is under sentence of four years on a charge of receiving stolen tires and along with Smith is awaiting trial for the $34,000 armed robbery of the Royal Bank at Wheatley. Ont., on September 10. They were committed for trial recently along with Leo Dubroy, Peter Delvin and Vernard Gates who have been released on bail.
Jail Governor Daigneau stated that he fired several shots at the fleeing car and believes he hit it at least once. He described the car as a light green 1940 or 1941 Ford coach or sedan and said the first part of the licence read 6-J.
HIGHWAYS WATCHED Ontario provincial police all through Kent and Essex counties were immediately warned and the highways between Chatham and Windsor fully patrolled.
The charge against Payne, who gave his address as 920 Ouellette avenue, was laid by Crown Attorney A. Douglas Bell, K.C.
Indication that Kent jail officials had feared some attempt might be made to free Baldwin and Smith was seen in the report that extra guards had been put on.
Jail Governor Daigneau was outside the jail when he saw someone trying to scale the 25-foot stone wall with a rope. It is believed there were five men but the others fled in the car while Daigneau captured Payne. Some neighbors who heard the shooting believe that the men in the car returned the fire.
MR. DAIGNEAU'S STORY "We had been watching everything here very closely," Mr. Daigneau told The Star today. "Last night shortly after 11 when I came out of my house adjoining the jail to make my rounds, I noticed two parked cars. Recognizing one of them, I walked toward it but just as I did it pulled away.
"I yelled at the driver to stop but he didn't so I fired at the tires as it turned off Stanley avenue onto Prince street. I again fired at the tires as it sped along Prince. I didn't fire higher because I didn't know who was in the car.
"I then ran back and played my flashlight on the walls of the jail and told the night turnkey to advise the police that this particular car was in town.
SAW MAN ON WALL "I rushed back to the Seventh street side of the jail and when I put my light on the wall I saw a man huddled over the top of the wall, sort of bending over.
"I fired one shot close to him to frighten him and then told him to put his hands up and come down with his back toward me. I told him to drop and then turn and face me. I kept my light on him and my gun ready and then slowly backed toward Stanley avenue and shouted for help."
PAYNE SEARCHE DR. D. Scott, of the Bank of Commerce, N. H. Plomley, insurance agent and Major William Bexton of the Salvation Army, who live close to the jail responded and Mr. Plomley searched Payne for weapons.
Detective Jack Harrington and Constable William Craven of Chatham police arrived then, followed by Provincial Constables A. R. Peters and John Bain.
After Payne was taken in the police cruiser to the city police cells, Governor Daigneau and the police searched the jail yard but found no one else.
STRONG ROPE LADDER Mr. Daigneau said that preparations for the attempted jail break apparently had been well made because a strong rope ladder with a hook on the end of it was thrown to the top of the wall from the outside and then dropped from the top to the yard below.
He said Payne had a stick with him which apparently had been used to try and pass weapons through to prisoners. Payne did not get to a window, he said.Questioned by The Star, Mr. Daigneau would not say if any weapons had been found on Payne, in the jail yard or in the jail.
He said no shots had been fired at him from those in the fleeing car.
There had been no tip-off but jail officials have been especially vigilant in the past few weeks, it was reported.
Mr. Daigneau was high in his praise of city and provincial police for their prompt arrival on the scene.

12 November In 1973 - Queen performed @ Leeds Town Hall, UK. They were supporting ‘Mott The Hoople.’ This is the first show of Queen's first UK tour.
Queen began their career as a bona fide touring rock group on November 12, 1973, when they opened for Mott The Hoople at Leeds Town Hall. Jack Nelson of Trident persuaded Mott The Hoople's manager Bob Hirschmann to allow Queen to be the support act for their tour. Hirschmann initially hesitated but eventually agreed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It had been nearly a decade since all four members had first considered life in a pop group and started out in their respective teenage bands, The Opposition (John Deacon) The Reaction (Roger Taylor) 1984 (Brian May) and The Hectics (Freddie Mercury). They had, individually and collectively, worked towards November 12, 1973, with incredible perseverance. There had been adversity and fiasco, providence and frolic, but, now, on the brink of real opportunity, their determination was fantastic.
The audience up and down the UK, from The Central in Chatham, to the Apollo Theatre in Glasgow, adored Queen. Their set had been designed to elicit instant appeal. It was 45 minutes long and usually contained just six of their own songs, the final number given over to a rock’n’roll medley which they elongated or abridged depending on the crowd’s response. Freddie Mercury, this unknown spidery figure in silk and Lycra, stalked the stage and dropped every ounce of himself into the performance. The band were tight ,driving new life into songs they had been playing for years. The music press, understandably perhaps, considered it far too brazen and pantomime, but the word of mouth when Mott The Hoople fans were back at school, college or work the next day was that Queen were the business.
During the tour the band sometimes complained that they were not getting enough coverage in the press and Chris Poole, Tony Brainsby’s assistant, had to placate them. “I had a good time with them but they were not an easy band,” Poole stressed. ‘On the Mott The Hoople tour they were quite annoyed because they didn’t get as much press as they figured they should have got. They may have been a support group, but they already had the mentality of stars!
Source: Queen The Early Years by Mark Hodkinson
Queen all got on very well with Mott. You couldn’t get more down to earth than Ian Hunter (the lead singer) and he loved them. They all became very close on that tour. The idea of a band called “Queen” may have upset a lot of people at the time they first gained some profile, but once people got to know them they were won round. In principle Queen were very well mannered and easy to like. Freddie, especially, knew how to have fun with everybody.
Extraction from Mick Rock’s book “Classic Queen”
Queen would get plenty of valuable experience while out on tour for a couple months.
Brian May later reflected on the period: "On tour as support to Mott The Hoople, I was always conscious that we were in the presence of something great, something highly evolved, close to the centre of the Spirit of Rock 'n' Roll, something to breathe in and learn from." In a 1998 radio spot, he expanded: "Mott The Hoople was really our first experience of life on the road, and a pretty blinding experience it was, I must say. It's always remained close to my heart, 'cause we grew up on that tour. We had to. It was just insanity. And to survive you had to adapt; you had to become a rock 'n' roll kind of animal and in the good sense of the word, you know. And, yeah, it was phenomenal.”
Freddie said, “Being support is one of the most traumatic experiences of my life."

Cape Cod CBD by Primabee is Here
CHATHAM – Something wasn’t right. The screaming pain Paul Borde could feel in his lower back was starting to affect his daily life. The discomfort was really unbearable for Borde, who struggled to sleep and walk throughout the summer of 2019. Perhaps worst of all, the pain hammering away at the bottom of his vertebrae was hindering Borde’s golf game, which really sounded alarms for the avid golfer.
“I thought my golfing career was over,” said Borde.
At the suggestion of his local chiropractor in Greenwich, Conn., Borde tried cannabidiol, better known as CBD. CBD is one of more than 100 chemical compounds known as cannabinoids in cannabis plants. Unlike marijuana, which contains tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive cannabinoid that triggers the feeling of being “high,” CBD isn’t psychoactive. That’s one of the main reasons CBD has become an attractive option for people yearning to halt pain or other symptoms without getting stoned or taking pharmaceutical drugs.
For Borde, a Chatham homeowner of 20-plus years, the introduction to CBD was a game-changer.
“Something was working. Big time,” said the 55-year-old Borde. “It impacted me very viscerally. It really helped. I was sleeping better and it completely helped my back.”
Borde’s personal experience with CBD was enough to turn his interest toward the industry. He made multiple visits to California, Colorado and New Jersey to learn more about CBD, the companies that produce it and the companies that sell it. What he discovered was an opportunity to create something special. Borde felt there was a need for a best-in-class product line that properly educated customers about CBD.
“The deeper I dug, the more I realized that a lot of start-up companies are taking a product, slapping a label on it and saying it’s CBD,” he said.
The idea of quickly profiting from CBD’s rise in popularity didn’t appeal to Borde, who instead decided he was in it for the long haul. He was so enamored by CBD that he left behind his 25-year career in the restaurant, bar and nightclub industry and moved from Connecticut to Chatham full time with his wife, Nanci, and their two Jack Russell terriers, Lily and Stanley, to start Primabee, a self-described “ultra-premium CBD daily essentials brand.”
Primabee’s website has only been live for a few weeks, but Borde has already seen an interest from customers. Part of the company’s early success stems from key partnerships Borde made with local, trusted brands, including Cape Cod Lavender Farm in Harwich and Candles by Tarraza in Dennis. Borde and Cape Cod Lavender Farm owner Cynthia Sutphin have put together various packages that include CBD-infused bath bombs, lavender sachets and lavender scented candles. Collaborating with a successful brand such as Cape Cod Lavender was a no-brainer for Borde from a product standpoint, but the partnership also allowed him to plant deeper roots in the community, a key component he believes is critical for success.
“It’s very important because I’ve changed my life — I’ve moved here, I’m now a local in the town,” Borde said. “This is my community now, and I want to be supportive of the people around me and grow organically from where I live. I want to be able to walk down the street and see people who say, ‘Hey, that’s the guy who started Primabee and is in the CBD business.’ That’s really important to me.”
Primabee’s products — which also include CBD gummies, oil tinctures, sports cream, salves and even dog treats — all come from two manufacturing plants in Colorado. The manufacturers grow their own hemp on site and then bring it to an extraction facility where the CBD is extracted from the plant and formulated into various products. Borde has considered introducing honey bees to the farm in the future so that they can pollinate the hemp and provide a little more flavor to the brand, which garnered its name Primabee after Borde became enthralled by bees during his research.
“As I was traveling around the country learning more about CBD, I was randomly reading about bees,” he said. “I just liked the whole communal thing of wellness,” he continued. “Like you hear the expression, ‘busy as a bee’ — it’s scientifically proven that bees communicate with each other, they feel emotion and exhibit signs of happiness, gratitude and fear. They are living in harmony, honey bees in particular. I just gravitated toward it and thought it was a great way to model a business after something that’s communal based.”
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s website, the FDA has only approved one CBD product, a prescription drug used to treat two rare and severe forms of epilepsy. However, more and more doctors are recommending CBD to their patients as an option to address anxiety, insomnia and various types of pain. Borde stresses that it’s important for people to consult their doctors if they have any questions about CBD, and he flat-out refuses to make any guarantees or claims about CBD’s abilities, knowing everybody reacts to CBD differently. Still, as the industry rapidly grows around the country and Borde’s wellness continues to thrive while using his products, the Chatham resident is confident Primabee will have the staying power to be a successful venture for him and his family.
“CBD is trending in a far bigger way than anything in the restaurant, music or nightclub businesses,” said Borde. “This is a massive movement that’s happening and is going to, in my humble opinion, change habits of how people live their lives. The whole concept of wellness and balance is so important, and CBD has the capability of doing amazing things for some people.”

Crystal chose The Mutilator when she saw that a sequel had just wrapped filming and is scheduled for a September 2022 release. According to her, this is not a case of so-bad-it’s-good, it’s just bad. It’s strange and weird and there are no surprises in the story. On the plus side, there is some decent gore.
Chad views The Mutilator as a cross between a Mentos commercial and Growing Pains (TV Series, 1985-1992). In other words, it’s not good. He’s also puzzled by the lead not being bothered at all by the deaths of friends. However, it’s great to see some of Mark Shostrum’s early effects work and there are some creative kills. The actors in The Mutilator give it the old college try with their attempts at campy humor but they are not supported in their efforts by the script, according to Jeff. For him, the only positive is Mark Shostrum’s effects work.
To summarize, your 80s Grue-Crew is none too enamored with The Mutilator, but if you’re a Mark Shostrum fan or want to prepare for the sequel’s release, you might still want to check it out. As of this writing, The Mutilator is available to stream free with ads from Tubi and from multiple subscription services, including Shudder and Arrow. In terms of physical media, The Mutilator (2-Disc Special Edition) [Blu-ray + DVD ] is available from Arrow Video.

"Burglar Gets Three Years," Windsor Star. January 12, 1943. Page 8. ---- Chatham Magistrate Says Accused's Record Holds No Hope --- CHATHAM. Jan. 12 - Lloyd Armstrong. 30, of no fixed address, was sentenced to three years in the penitentiary at Kingston on a charge of breaking and entering and theft by Magistrate I. B. Craig in police court yesterday.
Armstrong pleaded guilty to the charge a week ago and was remanded one week for sentence. He was arrested in London a week ago Saturday driving a truck stolen earlier in the day from a garage here where he had been employed.
Commenting upon the long record of the accused, Magistrate Craig declared he could see no hope for him.
Francis Turner, Concession 5, Chatham-Gore, was sentenced to seven days in the county jail when he pleaded guilty of drunk driving. He was, however, given a month deferment of sentence to assist his father in moving. Turner was charged by Provincial Constable Jack McQueen of Wallaceburg who found the accused intoxicated in his car in the ditch on Highway 40. January 9. In addition he was assessed $19.90 in costs.
[AL: Armstrong was married, though he did not disclose his wife's address to the police or prison authorities - his sister lived in Noranda, Quebec. Despite the sensational claims of the sentencing judge, Armstrong's record amounted to less than two years in prison, with several terms in the reformatory and local jails for minor traffic, drunkenness and property violations. He had been released from the penitentiary in February 1942, after serving a year and a half of a two year sentence for theft in the low security unit. This time around, he was convict #7167 at Kingston Penitentiary. He was assigned to the garage, fixing cars, and was transferred May 1943 to the reform-oriented Collin's Bay Penitentiary. There he was inmate #2056 and, again, worked in the garage. He had severed reports but was otherwise 'clean' on his record, and was released May 1945.]
