How to Write Dialogue for (most) Dream SMP Characters
A few months ago, I remembered seeing a lot of posts giving advice on how to write dialogue for DSMP Characters. And while those posts contained numerous helpful pointers, overall, they fall just short of capturing what it means to write in a character’s Voice.
Unique character Voices, while tricky to get right, are usually achieved by giving each character a distinct set of words to say, in a manner that distinguishes them from the rest of the cast.
With this in mind, I’ve spent the past few days combing through almost Thirty Hours of VOD footage to collect nearly all of the unique words, phrases, and speaking habits of every major and minor character on the Dream SMP (involved in 2+ story arcs.)
Before Reading:
Sentence-Starters are single words or phrases which begin a sentence. (ie. “Y’know, maybe you should try something different.”)
Sentence Paddings are reoccurring words added to the middle of sentences. (ie. “It’s like he just can’t cry.”)
Sentence Endings are single words or phrases which end a sentence. (ie. “There’s no need to fight, I hope.”)
All three of these types can be combined with one another to create more natural-sounding sentences. For instance, if a character has the two Sentence-Starters “Okay” and “So,” they can be used like this; “Okay, so, I’m a bit worried.”
(Note: When certain traits or phrases aren’t obvious with how they should be applied to dialogue, an (ie.) will be added below to illustrate them.)
Wilbur
General Traits:
Repeats himself for emphasis. Sometimes these repetitions will add additional information. More often, this repetition is focused around a specific word with the circumstance of the sentence being changed each time.
ie. “I’m living in an eternal limbo again. I've been through limbo, I’m out of limbo, and socially, I’m still in this limbo.”
Highly eloquent in language, bordering on poetic.
Highly introspective; significantly less so after Eret’s betrayal and onward.
Occasionally makes literary analogies and references, sometimes breaking the Fourth Wall to do so.
Curses semi-frequently. Wilbur is the only known character to use the word “cunt,” although rare.
Common Go-To Swears - Fuck, Shit, Prick, Bastard, Hell, Ass (Including all variations and combinations.)
Tends to hum when he thinks to himself.
Stutters most often when offended, shocked, or surprised.
Generally addresses characters semi-formally, often by title or role.
Often slips into long-form monologues when self-reflecting.
Usually defaults to being the head of a conversation; introducing, managing, and elaborating on topics throughout, especially when speaking to three or more people.
Circumstantial Phrases:
You and I, we’re ━ (To connect positively with someone.)
ie. “You and I, we’re used to seeing the good in people.”
I wanna pick your brain / Can I pick your brain? (To ask about someone else.)
Don’t say that, I’ll cry (Affectionate banter, only to Tommy.)
I’m afraid ━ (When hopeless or delivering bad news.)
ie. “I’m afraid there’s no getting out of this now.”
There’s no reason to ━ / There’s no reason for ━ / There’s no need for ━  (When being threatened or breaking up a fight.)
ie. “There’s no need for violence, gentlemen.”
I like to think that ━ (For optimistic introspection or hopeful defiance.)
You need to understand, ━ / Would you say I’ve been ━? / What are you suggesting? (When defensive or passively disagreeing.)
ie 2. “Would you say I’ve been a good leader?”
What I’ve been thinking is ━ / I’ve been thinking ━ / I’m thinking ━ (When criticizing or giving input/orders.)
I just happened to be ━, when I ━ / I just happened to notice ━ (For observations.)
ie 1. “I just happened to be in the area, when I came across this house.” || ie 2. “I just happened to notice the smoke over the hill.”
Yo! (For excitement.)
Can I be real with you? / Can I just say, ━ / Believe me, ━ / You’re not gonna believe me, but ━ (Precedes a moment of vulnerability or a confession.)
━, I would say. (For observations, positive or negative.)
ie. “This is bad, I would say.”
Look at me / Hey (To get someone’s attention.)
Yeah / You’re right / Right / Alright / Oh / Okay / Cool (For agreement or passive acknowledgment.)

Common Go-To Swears - Fuck, Bitch, Pussy, Shit, Dick, Hell, Bastard, Ass/Arse, Prick (Including all variations and combinations.)
Generally low eloquence. Conveys feelings and ideas with straight-forward, simple words.
Mostly non-introspective and unsure how to describe complex emotions.
When he happens to be introspective, he makes up odd analogies using slice-of-life or nature-based concepts.
Gives an odd assortment of nicknames to every character he meets (even animals and inanimate objects) and uses them almost as commonly as their given name. Also addresses himself by nicknames in the same fashion.
Common Self-Proclaimed Titles - Wife-Haver / Haver of Wives, Big T, Tommy Trusty, Tommy Frounce, Big Man, Toom, The Stoner, Tommy ‘Careful Danger Kraken’ Innit, Man with A Plan, Dirty Crime Boy … (More Not Mentioned)
Over-exaggerates nearly all of his statements when playful or upset.
ie. “This is probably the worst thing to ever happen to anyone in the history of anything, ever.”
Mostly confined to one-liners when in a conversation with more than two people.
Speaks constantly, even when alone; mostly in rambles or run-on sentences. There should never be dead air when Tommy is in a scene, unless he’s terrified, grieving, or deeply hurt.
Says a person's name (or nickname) twice with a questioning inflection when trying to get their attention.
ie. “Wilbur? Wil?”
Stutters frequently, most often when scared, shocked, or angry.
Tends to shout for Phil, Tubbo, or Wilbur when in trouble or distressed.
Uncommonly, when insulting or complimenting someone, he uses three general descriptors before a blanket statement.
ie. “Sapnap, you’re just a pathetic man. Useless and irritating, alright? Sapnap, no one wants to talk to you, ever.”
Repeats himself often when afraid.
Sometimes asks ‘stupid’ questions as a form of verbal processing.

General Traits:
Usually confined to short and simple sentences. While not particularly eloquent, these limited statements are precise and to-the-point.
When speaking to most people (especially superiors), he defaults to general politeness to ease tension, as well as addressing individuals by title or position.
Common Go-To Polite Terms - Sir, Ma’am, My apologies / I’m terribly sorry, May I / If I may, Right away, On it
Almost always blunt and direct when speaking. There should be nearly no noticeable difference between the way he phrases compliments, insults, or observations.
Apologizes more than every other character in the cast. However, these apologies halt sharply after the events of Doomsday.
Tends to go along with and adopt a lot of the nicknames given by Tommy.
Curses semi-frequently.
Common Go-To Swears - Fuck, Bitch, Shit, Dick, Hell, Bastard, Ass/Arse (Including all variations and combinations.)
Stutters only when shocked, embarrassed, or surprised.
When deeply hurt or overwhelmed, he shuts down and doesn’t speak until the event passes.
Not introspective unless pushed to be by an outside force; typically a person prompting him.
Rarely begins a conversation unless spoken to first.
Circumstantial Phrases:
Hey / Look (To address someone.)
Really / Literally / Surely (For emphasis.)
Oh my god / Oh god (For shock, when not swearing.)
Boss man (Common repetitious address.)

Quackity - Big Q, My Right-Hand Man, Mr. Vice President, Boss Man
Technoblade - The Blade, Mr. Blade, Sir
Dream - Tyrant, Creep, Green Boy / Green Bastard
Tommy - Big T, Boss Man
Ranboo
General Traits:
Repeats himself out of habit, typically only with short phrases or sentence-starters. These repetitions mostly do not add additional information (in an opposite fashion to Wilbur’s) and can last from three to five lines per sentence.
ie. “Cool- Cool- Cool, so that means we have a plan.”
Stutters frequently, especially when embarrassed, shocked, or scared. Speaks clearly and forcefully only when angry or deeply hurt.
Semi-introspective. However, this introspection is usually outwardly self-critical.
In the event of emotional vulnerability, he will instantly shut down if this expression is discouraged by another person.
Does not curse and actively refuses to.
Common Go-To Replacement Swears - Jeez, Oh My God / Oh God / Gosh, Dang / Darn / Darn It, Holy Cow, Crap, Heck (Including most combinations.)
Often second-guesses his own actions, morals, and emotions.
Rarely eloquent unless it relates to feelings or ethics. This sparse eloquence also dissolves when he’s placed in a conversation with more than two people; especially if this conversation is political or hostile.
Hums when thinking or agreeing passively.
Apologizes profusely, even if something isn’t his fault.
Circumstantial Phrases:
I’m not sure / I don’t know (Obvious Use.)

Mid-Sentence Padding:
General / Multi-Use - Like, Actually, Exactly, I just / Just
Nervous / Uncertain - A little bit, Honestly, Kinda
Sentence Endings:
General / Multi-Use - Man, And everything, Actually, Exactly
Annoyed / Offended - Alright?
Nervous / Uncertain - Right? Sadly, Okay? Honestly, But it’s whatever
Nicknames/Addressing Other Characters:
Tubbo - My Other Half, My Husband, Honey, Baby
Technoblade - Techno-Sensei, Blood God
Dream - Tyrant, The Prisoner
Fundy - Coward
Philza - Sir
Quackity - Sir
Quackity
General Traits:
Repeats himself for emphasis (in a similar fashion to Wilbur.) However, instead of this repetition focusing on a single word, it mostly follows the same structured ending or beginning.
ie. “You want to jump in the fountain and drink the water? Go do it! You want to strip naked and run through the streets? Be my guest. You want to throw all your money away and pass out on the poolside deck? I’m right there with you.”
Highly eloquent, especially in debate and discussion. Unfortunately, this eloquence vanishes when it comes to introspection; defaulting to simple words, phrases, and analogies to express complex emotions.
Stutters when embarrassed, shocked, or emotionally vulnerable.
The more angry he is, the more clear, forceful, and precise his speaking is.
Curses semi-frequently. The word “fuck” is almost exclusively used for emphasis when in conversation, unless insulting someone.
ie. “I’m sick and tired of people telling me, my entire fucking life, that I can’t do something!”
Common Go-To Swears - Fuck, Bitch, Shit, Dick, Hell, Ass (Including all variations and combinations.)
Semi-introspective, especially during Season One. These emotions and thoughts are initially stated self-critically. However, post-Season Two, this introspection is almost always expressed through projection onto other people or during breakdowns.
Tends to use “very” in place of stronger descriptors.
ie. “He was— He was very mean.”
Hums when thinking.
Sometimes pretends to not know something or feigns ignorance of events in the hopes of getting more information out of someone else.
Often laughs when confused or embarrassed.
Circumstantial Phrases:
Look / Hey (To address someone.)
No way / Oh, really? / Really? / Oh my god (When surprised, amused, or prompting someone to continue speaking.)
I’m more than happy to ━ / I’m serious (When being kind to friends or threatening enemies.)
ie 1 (Friends). “I’m more than happy to protect you, okay?” / ie 1 (Enemies). “I’m more than happy to make your life hell, alright?”
How’s that sound? / You understand? / You understand me? (When frustrated, threatening someone, or offering a deal.)
You know what? / Guess what? (When frustrated, hopeless, or grieving.)
At the end of the day ━ / ━, at the end of the day (To conclude or summarize a point.)
I wanna pick your brain / Can I pick your brain? (To ask about someone else.)
Trust no one / Don’t trust anyone (A warning, only to loved-ones.)
As much as I’d love to ━ (For ending a conversation.)
ie. “As much as I’d love to stand around talking all day, I’ve got other plans.”
I’m not sure exactly (For confusion or uncertainty.)
Is that so? (When interested or smug.)
I’m gonna tell you something / I’m just gonna say this / Just know that ━ (Precedes emotional vulnerability, a confession, or a warning.)
It’s fine / Exactly / I get that / Alright / Yeah / Agreed / Right / Okay (For agreement or passive acknowledgment.)
Sentence-Starters:
General / Multi-Use - Look, Well, Y’know, Man, Hey, Exactly, Alright, Okay, Yeah, Believe me, Anyway, Guys, Fellas
Offended / Annoyed - It’s simple, Here, Come on, Right now / Right, Again, Listen, I get that
Mid-Sentence Padding:
General / Multi-Use - Exactly, Really, Just
Sentence Endings:
General / Multi-Use - Y’know? Man, Fellas
Offended / Annoyed - Come on, Alright? Right now / Right? Okay?
Nicknames/Addressing Other Characters:
Wilbur - Wil, My Problem, Soot / Mr. Soot (Mispronounced as “Suit.”)
Ghostbur - Wilbur, Wil
Schlatt - Babe / Baby, Love of My Life, Hermoso, Honey, Mr. President, Partner, Love / Mi Amor, Sweetheart, Tyrant, Dictator
Dream - Tyrant, The Man Who Murdered Tommy / Tommy’s Murderer, The Prisoner
Technoblade - Filthy Pig / Pig, The Blade, Blood God

Sapnap - Mr. Sapnap, El Sapnapo / Señor Sapnap, My Love, Babe
Tubbo - Kid, Mr. President
Ranboo - Traitor, Minutes Man, Tubbo’s Partner
Foolish - Fearsome Warrior, The Architect
Karl - Karlos / Karlitos, Babe / Baby
Sam - The Warden, My Partner, Dad
Schlatt
General Traits:
Semi-eloquent with language, especially when delivering speeches, arguments, and insults.
When speaking, he should sound either completely indifferent or mildly amused on occasion. The only exceptions to this are fits of rage, which can appear seemingly at random.
Curses frequently.
Common Go-To Swears - Fuck, Bitch, Pussy, Shit, Dick, Hell, Ass (Including all variations and combinations.)
Sometimes breaks into fits of maniacal laughter, usually after an act of violence or when getting his way.
Non-introspective. Tends to fake shallow introspection if it has a chance of getting him something he wants (a relationship, item, ally.)
ie. “Y’know, it’d make me sad if you joined Wilbur, sweetheart. Oh, I’d just be a complete mess.”
Genuine emotional vulnerability is only expressed when sober or in a hopeless situation. Even then, this expression is still shallow and guarded.
Frequently insults and demeans friends, employees, and partners, as well as repeating insults others say to embarrass the original target.
Analogies are exclusively used for insults.
ie. “Whenever I get close to you, it's kinda like one of those conch shells. I can almost hear... Well, not the ocean, but I can hear a bunch of whining toddlers.”
Rarely speaks with uncertainty or hesitance. Sentence starters, such as “I think,” should be used very sparingly.
Rarely stutters or trips over his words.
Ghost Schlatt doesn’t have his own character section since he speaks nearly identical to Schlatt himself. However, there are still some important traits only his ghost counterpart has.
Glatt (Ghost Schlatt) Traits:
- Coughs and wheezes often.
- Far more frequent periods of maniacal laughter.
- Repeats what people say back to them in a mocking manner.
- Says his own ghost name periodically.
- Ayy (When amused or excited.)
- You see any ━? (For mocking an observation.)
> ie. “You see any treadmills down here? Are you out of your mind?”
Glatt (Ghost Schlatt) Sentence-Starters: Listen, So, I Think, My god, By the way
Circumstantial Phrases:
Oh my god / Good god (When shocked, amused or annoyed.)
No, no / Don’t even (When passively disagreeing.)
Never (When denying or disagreeing forcefully.)
I’m having none of that / I’ll have none of that / Did you just ━? (For telling someone to stop something.)
This is just terrible (To describe annoying or ugly things.)
What do you mean ━? (Repeats after someone informs him of something.)
ie. (Initially; Quackity - ‘Tommy just stole something from me.’) “What do you mean Tommy stole something?”
What’s up? (Common repetitious greeting.)
Big guy / Tough guy / Pal (Common repetitious addresses.)
It’s the craziest thing / The craziest thing just happened (For emphasis and story introduction.)

Let’s make it happen (Common repetitious catchphrase.)
Alright / Yeah / Okay / That’s Cool / Cool / Nice / Sure / I know (For agreement or passive acknowledgment.)
Sentence-Starters:
General / Multi-Use - Y’know, Alright, Yeah, Well, Just / I just, Oh, Now, Man, I know, I think
Mid-Sentence Padding:

Niki - Old Hag, Dumb Wench
Tubbo - Kid, Secretary, Crybaby
Tommy - Child, Brat, Big T
Ponk - Doctor
Dream
General Traits:
Generally low eloquence. Expresses sentences with short, simple phrasing.
Stutters semi-frequently, especially when confused, annoyed, or embarrassed.
When called out or pushed into a corner during an argument, he will almost always shut down and stop replying.
Curses uncommonly. Often unintentionally censors himself.
Common Go-To Swears - Fuck, Shit, Hell, Ass (Including all variations and combinations.)
Common Go-To Replacement Swears - Oh My God / Oh God / Gosh, Dang (Including most combinations.)
Mostly non-introspective, unless faking it can gain him something of value.
Both honesty and emotional vulnerability are guarded. If someone pushes against these boundaries he will typically grow angry or distant.
The more angry he is, the more precise and eloquent he becomes with his words.
Speaking tone mostly defaults to indifferent or blasé, especially when communicating with an enemy or stranger.
Frequently uses nature, object, or family-based analogies to convey concepts like ownership, motivation, and ethics.
Often separates the contractions “I’ll” and “Can’t.”
Tends to address people by role or title.
