rules: write up a blurb or make a visual collage of the people or characters (from books, TV shows, movies, etc.) that inspired your story and/or OC, either visually, personality wise, or just a general vibe

the story of OST wasn't based on much of anything. I got inspired by Island Living when the EP was released to do a story in Sulani with mermaids, and naturally, every mermaid needs a pirate. I repurposed older sims (who were going to be part of a different sim story based on The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) into Naida and Ven and thus On Sunlit Tides was born. The name being wordplay of PotC: On Stranger Tides and the Sims 3 island world Sunlit Tides.

Ven's character is an amalgamation, but he is primarily based on Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop. There's a line in the anime where Spike mentions that one eye can only see the past. Whether this is actually literal or simply metaphorical isn't made clear to viewers, but I was always struck by it, and thought the mechanism was particularly fascinating for a character to actually suffer constantly see the world through two entirely different lenses simultaneously. Ven also has many of Spike's lackadaisical mannerisms, while also having a similar backstory. In Spike's case, he's ex-yakuza, in Ven's, it's ex-military. Emrys is Ven's equivalent of Vicious; a partner/brother-figure from his past he now deeply despises and knows he will have to inevitably face. The two characters follow similar paths and have nearly paralleled resolutions, as well as other minor commonalities such as personal philosophies, aliases, etc.

To a lesser extent, Ven also incorporates certain elements of both Jack Sparrow and Howl, with the scene where Naida first uses her magic being directly influenced by the Howl/Sophie hair color changing scene. The overall OST aesthetic (quite obviously) borrows heavily from Pirates of the Caribbean (with Artrice being my interpretation of Tia Dalma) and League of Legend's Bilgewater. Naida has less tangible inspirations, though her magic and overall connection to the moon (as well as aspects of her appearance) were influence by Yue from ATLA.

I found an arranged marriage blurb in my WIP folder and it just called out to me to finish it. It really won't shut up about it. Engagement with Space Trash has slowed down a lot and I've been struggling to stay motivated on just that one project. So, now there's this. I'm trying to stay a few chapters ahead of writing this so that I can publish it on a schedule and hopefully keep everyone excited!

I haven't written anything but blurbs for my Hawke, Sparrow, so I'm featuring her in this with Fenris. (Shut it. I love her name.) It's gonna be dark. Like, descending into the depths of the Mariana Trench without a glow-stick sort of dark. I'll try my best to tag any trigger warnings ahead of time on AO3, even if they're spoilers, so no one gets invested only to have to stop later on.

R@pe/SA will be tagged but I want to make it clear that none of that will be explicitly written, only suggested. There is a scene where something is acted out but doesn't actually happen. But, Danarius is in this story and he's basically just a walking R/SA tag, am I right? Lordy, he's vile.

Anywho....

Depending on the feedback from this post, I may put up the first chapter tomorrow or Monday. I'm a bit nervous doing something so heavy but let me know what your thoughts are!

Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller My rating: 3 of 5 stars 3.5 Sooo... This was much better than what I thought it would be. I loved The Shadows Between Us but I didn't hear the best about this duology but since it's a debut I think, I was ready to cut it some slack. I also heard it read more toward the younger side of YA, I disagree with that. I don't think at all it tends towards Middlegrade. I really liked Alosa. She was a fun character. I'm not sure she was a female Jack Sparrow as promised on the blurb but she was fun and bad ass and while she's not the best fleshed out character, she's also complex enough that i didn't care much past that. I also liked most of the side characters - who are also not quite fleshed out enough but what we got was fun. The worldbuilding is light and pretty basic but I think it worked out. It's a pirate story, we don't need a complex world outside of an ocean and some creatures. I genuinely enjoyed the life on the ship and the whole buried treasures and everything. It didn't have to be more complex than that. The plot was predictable and the pacing was a little off though. That book was paradoxically short and yet too long. Short because it's very easy to read, very quick to finish, but long because when you've finished and you think back, it's like you just read the first part of a book, like you've finished the introduction and when you really think about it, nothing really happened. I am planning on going straight into the sequel, not because I am at the edge of my seat with anticipation, but because I feel like I paused in the middle of a book. I'm not sure if that's good or not overall. Now for the things I really disliked: Riden. Who is supposed to the male LI. So, on paper, the guy has everything to be a nice YA Love Interest. In all practicalities? I very much disliked his guts, does not trust him one bit and I really hated the romance. Riden pretends to help Alosa a lot but only to a certain point and when she gets hurt, he blames her for it. He's a coward and here's a very nice quote that should raise every red flags that girl possesses: (view spoiler)[ "And the only way I could punish myself was to force myself to watch you in pain. That was my punishment (hide spoiler)] A real catch, right? And sure, it's a pirate universe, so you could argue eeeeh Alosa isn't the best person herself and they're pirates but the thing is we have examples of male pirates on the crew who are apparently descent people. Unfortunately they're "ugly" so they can't find love in there. Sorry, I don't make the rules. (yes I'm being sarcastic). I don't know why Alosa would fall for that guy. Honestly, I think she either has Stockholm syndrome or her father treats her so badly she thinks that's what love from a man should be. Overall it was enjoyable and I'm going straight into the sequel. View all my reviews

Summary: You and your boyfriend Johnny Depp decided to get away from the paparazzi in a beach cabin.

He was the one that came up with the idea after you told him you wanted to spend some time alone without paparazzi following you.

You both decided that going to a resort near the beach for the weekend would be the best idea.

You’d have one little cabin for just the two of you.

He would pay the biggest part of the vacation because, let’s be honest, you could not afford it.

You would get there by airplane on Friday night.

Both of you would be so tired you would fall asleep during the flight on top of each other.

When the plane landed, a flight attendant had to wake you up as it was really late and you were really comfortable.

Sadly, she had to ask to take a picture with him and you couldn’t wait to get to the resort already.

Luckily, no one in the airport seemed to notice him and the suitcases arrived pretty soon so you left as fast as you could really wanting the peace from the lonely cabin on the beach. 

A car from the resort came to the airport to pick you up.

Soon later you finally got to the resort.

Taking in the view and the warmth from the soft wind, Johnny wrapped his hands around your waist, both of you looking into the ocean.

The cabin was as beautiful.

It was far away from the others. You could barely see the people on the beach.

Once inside you went straight to bed from how tired you were.

The next morning you woke up in your boyfriend's arms, the sunlight coming through the soft curtains.

After several minutes of just looking to his features, he woke up.

“What are you looking at?”

Staying in bed for more minutes.

Finally getting up to remove the curtains that were blocking the view.

The golden light coming through making the water look even more transparent.

Neck kisses while watching the ocean.

Followed by a morning shower ;)

Spending most of the day swimming together, relaxing in the warm weather or walking hand by hand by the water.

At eating times asking the resort to bring the food to the cabin so you didn’t have to deal with the fans from the restaurant.

Enjoying all the alone time.

Not missing the fans or the paparazzi at all.

Hands always touching each other.

Lots of kissing and make-out sessions.

Still being careful that someone might be watching you just by habit.

Him reassuring you that no one is there and that there is nothing to worry about.

Every day ending in sex.

Not wanting to leave and coming back at least once a month to keep both of you sane.

Every time is even better than the previous one.

Coming back home to the same routine and can't wait for the next romantic getaway.

scent: pineward treacle and revelries

yesterday I took a break from testing and tried a “wear” of murkwood (disappointing; it really didn’t have any presence as a scent on me, and rapidly faded to nothing when not on the relatively protected area of my forearms).

today, we’re back on our bullshit! on the left, revelries (rum, clove, cinnamon, oud, hazelnut, raisin, apple), and on the right, treacle (tobacco, lapsang souchong tea, molasses, raisin, honey).

I admit I may have had excessive expectations of revelries, given the many comparisons I’ve seen to slumberhouse rume (my second most favourite slumberhouse, I treasure my small sticky bottle and save it for mellow fall days, when its home-made cola vibe can cheerfully surround me). it is quite nice, spicy and brown-sugar-ish, and I can see why it would be compared to rume— it’s not the same, but it’s in the same region. a sort of attack edible oh right, that’s not what “edible” means, let’s get out the perfume words, “gourmand.”

on the other side, treacle, whoa. that’s not edible, it’s just attack. on initial application it’s something like a cross between the wrong end of a stable and being stuffed head first into a cold wood-chip smoker. it reminds me, weirdly, of ...something? about bandages? I feel like my parents, when I was little, had some kind of tin box of bandages or plasters or first-aid stuff that smelled something like this? well. that’s going to bother me. the marketing blurb says “a ponderous evening by the fire as the weather turns” and ponderous, sure, but this isn’t any kind of live fire, it’s something heavily smoked, tarry, sticky. a real jack sparrow of a smell. yo ho ho!

got to say these two smell great together, too. this is obnoxious! I love it.

@yourlocalheartbreaker thanks so much for your post about Nelson’s Sparrow. I had already started a blurb exploring Hotch’s response to Gideon’s death, but you brought up the fact that he very likely had to ID the body, and I just had to include that in this blurb. 

I’ll be honest: I have done little to no proofreading, and it doesn’t flow as smoothly as I’d like, but I just needed to get this out.

“Where did Hotch go?”

Rossi looked up at Morgan leaning against the doorway. “He’s taking some personal time.”

Morgan raised his eyebrows in surprise. “Now? It’s barely after lunch, what does he need it for?”

Rossi shook his head. “Didn’t ask.”

“And you aren’t at least a little concerned?” Morgan asked skeptically. “Has he ever up and left in the middle of the workday?”

“Well, I’d ask, but he said that he’s cutting communication and that if he is needed he’s only answering Penelope or Jessica’s call.”

“Jack’s not with him?” Morgan asked, taken aback at yet another out-of-character decision. He couldn’t remember if Hotch had ever taken a personal day without Jack.

Rossi shrugged, though his concern was also obvious. “Even Hotch needs a break sometimes.”

The crisp winter air of the Virginia wilderness was filled with silence, only cut by the sounds of nature. Hotch stood in front of the cabin, staring blankly and letting the ambiance of the place that had been Gideon’s chosen safe haven wash over him. It was a far cry from his once-daily forays into the mind of the scourge of humanity. 

Only now it was tainted with blood, with the murder of the man who had found a refuge in the peace of this forest. 

Is there really a place on the planet that hasn’t seen the vileness of man?

How could he possibly articulate the sheer depth of the grief and resentment that he felt towards the man who had once been one of his mentors, who had left him floundering in the dust to clean up the mess that was left behind?

Insomnia had been keeping Hotch up way past midnight and he was going through paperwork with the hope that it would bore him to sleep when he got the call. Years of getting cases in the middle of the night had left its mark, as the sound of his ringtone cleared his head as it had done so many times in the past. Reaching for his phone, he anticipated the multiple trips to the coffee machine that had replaced the old, faithfully crappy machine that had been there when he first joined the unit.

And he was right—he wouldn’t be getting any sleep that night. 

Or the next night, for that matter.

Hotch remembered feeling strangely detached from his person as he put on a coat and, on a whim, pulled out his service weapons from the safe, grabbing his work bag as he left the apartment and headed towards his car. 

In any other situation, he would have worried about falling asleep at the wheel during the long drive.

In any other situation, he would have called the team to assemble.

But this was not any other situation. Seeing the flashing red and blue lights from an emergency vehicle illuminating the cabin and the surrounding clearing proved that something was wrong, and when he approached one of the EMTs, he knew this was something he had to do for the sake of the team. As he always does.

For the sake of the team.

They had gone through too much.

It was a surprise to see his contact flashing on his phone screen after over seven years of no contact, but it was alarming when he heard pained groans and then a series of gunshots from the other end. 

And that was when the terrible thought came into his mind.

And even though Hotch knew what he was going to see when the EMTs exchanged a look and let him into the cabin, it certainly wasn’t less of a shock, wasn’t less of a punch to the gut to see the body, crumpled on the ground with blood pooling around it like a grotesque puppet with its strings cut. 

Hotch remembered staring blankly at the man who had left the job that killed his fire in search of himself, but whose fire was now extinguished. Permanently. 

For the sake of the team.

He remembered snapping back to himself to find that he had knelt down with his own hand near the neck, having just checked for a pulse in hopes that it would make it—real? fake? He cleared his throat before standing up and turning to the waiting EMTs. At the sympathetic looks he was getting, he felt a faint annoyance rising through the ice that froze through his being.

He wasn’t the floundering, young, ambitious agent that probably would have been giving some indication that he was barely holding himself together at the seams

He wasn’t the friend—were they really friends, though?—who hadn’t seen or talked to him in years and would probably be giving some indication that he was grieving.

His name is—

His name was Jason Gideon, he’s a former FBI agent. I will be calling in federal law enforcement to investigate this, please make yourselves available in the next few days to give your statements… 

He had to be the uptight hardass that didn’t let anything affect him. He had to retreat into the cold mechanical mindset that protected him, for the team.

It didn’t feel right, however. How could he put on such a facade in a place that was supposed to be safe? How could he, in the place where Gideon could be totally himself without fear of the demons that haunted him?

How could he treat this like any other crime scene?

For the sake of the team.

The first call he made was to Stephen. It wasn’t the first time he had made a notification of death to family members, and he didn’t let it be any different this time. 

(oh, it was so different.)

It’s Aaron Hotchner, I worked with your dad in the FBI. I apologize for calling so late… 

And then calls were made to the team. They were short—there was no way Hotch could possibly tell them about the murder over the phone, but the team was smart. They all knew something was wrong.

I need you to come to Gideon’s cabin as soon as you can. I texted you the address.

The same thirteen words, repeated six times to six different people, with his same detached, precise tone of voice.

Emily. I, uh, just wanted to let you know that Gideon was murdered. In his cabin a few hours ago. I’m there now, I’ve called the rest of the team, and… Yeah, I just wanted to let you know. I hope everything is going well in London.

Emily hadn't picked up, but she called Hotch back a few hours later. It doesn’t feel real, he had said when she asked after him. He was never really able to lie to her, the woman who he found was just as broken and yet fiercely protective as him, and he knew that as he changed the subject and started updating her on the status of the investigation.

I’m not sure if you’re even going to listen to this, but I thought it would be better if you heard it from me than from an email, or text, or… yeah. 

I just wanted to let you know that Gideon was found shot multiple times in his cabin early this morning; he was murdered. The team worked the case and solved it, the unsub was killed along the way, so… there’s going to be a funeral, and though I’m not sure who his son is planning on inviting, I'll tell you where he is buried when that happens, and… yeah. Just thought I should let you know. Hope you and your family are doing well.

The words had come surprisingly easy to him when he left a message for Elle. Their correspondence over the years was never constant and never for long periods of time, mainly consisting of pictures that kept the other updated on their lives, and they never called.

Now, he wondered how she reacted to getting the message. Did she curse him out for calling for the first time in years only to tell her that her old colleague had been murdered? Did she confide in her partner?

Dave had been the first to get to the cabin, and Kate and JJ followed closely behind. Reid, Morgan, and Garcia came shortly thereafter. Hotch watched as all of them took in the state of the cabin and the sheet-covered body he was standing sentinel over, and no one said anything until Garcia took the first step.

It’s Gideon.

Grief was a terrible feeling, and it cut right through people’s masks and shone a light on the good and the ugly that was within a person. It was a feeling Hotch was intimately familiar with, many times over now, but the team had only seen him ripped open once. He was well aware that he didn’t make for a pretty sight when they got to the house he had lived in with Haley. They had walked in on a fit of explosive, murderous anger that had been immediately followed by pure, unadulterated grief.

He was well aware that the shattering of his infamous control had scared the team.

And so, just like a few years ago with Emily, Hotch watched over his team as they rushed to solve the murder, all driven by the pain of loss. 

He watched as Rossi gave everyone an insight into how the BAU started when it was just him and Gideon before Max Ryan had taken them under his wing.

He watched over them over the next few days and weeks as they all grieved in their own ways, keeping an eye out for red flags.

But now, when he wasn't even trying to keep up the facade, he still felt numb. For how could he articulate the so many complicated feelings he had regarding the man who had guided him, who had taught him to be sure of himself, who had abandoned him without a word?

Hotch looked around, faintly surprised to find that he had walked into the cabin and was simply standing in the middle of the living room. He had only been to the cabin once prior that night, and there was a palpable difference in the air.

Tainted.

A few weeks has gone by since this cabin had actually been lived in. Everything was still in its place, perfectly preserved like a museum exhibit.

Like a crime scene.

Unable to remain any longer, he turned to walk back outside when something on the wall caught his attention. He walked over, only to stop dead a few feet away.

There were multiple photos and drawings of birds pinned to the wall, and near the edge of the collection was a single picture of the team that had been when he had left. Peeking out from under it was a single slightly yellowed envelope.

It was with caution and slight guilt that he moved forward and carefully unpinned the photo to get the envelope. As he walked over to the nearby dining table and sat, he carefully pulled out the contents of the envelope—a single, folded sheet of paper.

When his eyes landed on the first line of that painfully familiar handwriting, he could only be glad that he was sitting, else his legs would have given out from under him at the sight of his first name.

This was written years ago, he thought with startling clarity, why didn’t he send it to me?

If anything, he felt even more numb as he read through the letter. And when he finished, there was still nothing. 

He wanted to scream, he wanted to hit something, he wanted to feel—anything. 

But he felt nothing—nothing but exhaustion. 

You’re going to go weeks—months, even—feeling fine. And then you’re going to have a bad day.

He’s had many bad days before. He never wants to have one again.

He’s spent years chasing after unsubs—psychopaths, rapists, terrorists. He’s spent years trying not to lose himself along with the people who’ve left because the darkness of this job finally caught up to them.

Elle, Erin, Alex, Gideon, Emily… Haley.

But maybe he did lose himself. Why else can’t he bring himself to feel anything, even after finding out that Gideon still remembered that young ambitious agent that shadowed him and Rossi like an eager puppy? 

And if he did indeed lose himself, maybe it’s for the best. 

The alternative is too painful to imagine. And despite outward appearances, Aaron Hotchner is fragile.

He is human.

okay ! i'm going to start by writing up a formal background for my most …. annoying muse aka alexander anderson ! heavily inspired by lucas scott & jess mariano ( i'm a big tv girl if you can't tell ) alexander is the eldest child of ariel & eric. early life.  he grew up in an incredibly warm household. his mother, as anyone could tell, is one of the kindest souls & he maintained a very close relationship with her/still does. he also learned how to wield a sword from his father eric. however, being the first born might that alexander also felt a lot of pressure from everyone around him. while he did pick up some of his mother's talent for the ocean and speaking to creatures, he actually has no magic abilities or mermaid tendencies. at age seven when this was confirmed, alexander was outwardly disappointed in himself and turned into more of a shell, upset at his lack of abilities. he instead perfected his sword skills and found a love for reading. he cultivated this passion for years, and his favorite thing is to sit by the ocean and read. teenage years. alexander was never a ' reckless teen ' and kept a good facade for his parents, but during his teen years a sense of loneliness really overcame. currently. alexander believes that his future as a prominent family member & heir to a kingdom means that he must maintain an iron fist facade even though on the inside there is a sense of loneliness. he acts like the world is against him, keeps a very tight circle, and came off as rude and icy towards people that don't like him. he's stone cold and uncaring on the outside, but he's just very selective about the people around him. he's distrustful of others, but finds exceptions to those rules.

and now we're off to my baby ! ella is absolutely the baby of her family. growing up as the pristine daddy's girl — she & kristoff were INSEPARABLE. literally, the girl's first words were 100% dada or even ice. early life. being the baby of the bjormans meant she was the most sheltered of her siblings, very close to her dad. however, she was never spoiled — rather she would just want to spend as much time with her family as possible. literally, every since she was little, she just wanted to be outside and play. she loved loved nature. teenage years. ok so ella's not exactly the smartest, and she definitely was someone who would do anything for adventures and the thrill of it. she got her heartbroken again & again because of how easily she would fall in love. but her sense of adventure always got her in trouble making her a bit of the trouble seeker. she never outwardly seeked trouble, but it definitely followed her wherever she went ! her own naive nature got her into much more trouble than she would admit. it turned out that she has a little bit of a lying problem. she also sugar coats bad things, and inadvertently shifts things in her favor. current. she is is actually elated by the idea of being able to meet as many new people as possible, and ella's not afraid to push boundaries and get to know everyone. she's very impulsive and maintains most of her teenage attitudes, making her rather immature compared to some of the other characters.

whew boy. first of all, i just start this by saying i was watching the hangover and i was like damn what if i did this. and then i did this. so let the record show the hangover lead to this. chase sparrow is just the worst honestly. early life. everything chase ever learned came from his father. every bad tendency he had was really an extension from his father. this isn't to say he's not close to his mother, he just wanted to be exactly like his father. however, when he turned eleven, his parents sent him away to live with other relatives and he had to adapt quickly. teenage years. chase worked hard to join eden's crew as her nephew — wanting to prove himself. this was when the real trouble really started. he craved adventure and attention—finding passion in things that were heavily frowned upon. the man literally gets a high from being a playboy and getting attention—he's extremely noncommittal. any and all attraction he feels for someone ends once he gets what he wants. even more so, the man is very very into the numbing substances — always high off something when he's not having fun. but he's loyal to his family, his crewmates, and his friends. current. he's definitely still causing trouble, viewing this shift as a time for more. definitely still not out of his college type phase, and definitely still a trouble maker. he has a place to call home thanks to eden, but he's never afraid to mess around.
