the jackal buzzard is a large bird of prey native to africa. they are known for their striking black & chestnut brown plumage; juveniles are almost entirely brown. females and males share the same plumage, but like most birds of prey, the female is notably larger than the male. they primarily dwell in mountainous areas with nearby scrubland or grasslands they can use to hunt. they primarily feed on rodents, but also take other small prey like reptiles and birds; they additionally feed on carrion. unfortunately, they sometimes fall victim to poisoned carcasses intended to get rid of their namesake, the jackal.

We finished packing for a month of travel and needed to relax before our vacation started, so we went to the nearest beach from Orlando - Cocoa Beach. We could see the Cape Canaveral launch pads from our hotel and beach but didn’t see Artemis I launch. We were treated to a couple of pleasing sunsets though.

In Praise of Feeling Bad About Yourself
by Wislawa Szymborska tr. Stanislaw Baraczak and Clare Cavanagh
The buzzard never says it is to blame. The panther wouldn’t know what scruples mean. When the piranha strikes, it feels no shame. If snakes had hands, they’d claim their hands were clean.
A jackal doesn’t understand remorse. Lions and lice don’t waver in their course. Why should they, when they know they’re right?
Though hearts of killer whales may weigh a ton, in every other way they’re light.
On this third planet of the sun among the signs of bestiality a clear conscience is Number One.

On Tuesday a buffalo's heart stirred with anger after witnessing the greed and cruelty of a jackal towards a buzzard, and so the buffalo charged, trampling both the jackal and the buzzard. The buffalo was arrested and put in jail forever.

Round 1, Poll 60
Jackal Buzzard vs Short-tailed Pygmy-tyrant
Tumblr media Tumblr media
sources under cut
Jackal Buzzard Propaganda
"It looks fantastic!"
"The adult buzzard is strickingly plumaged and arguably one of the most "handsome" buzzards" - Wiki
Their diet consists mainly of small mammals, especially rodents. They will also hunt snakes, lizards, and ground-feeding birds such as sandgrouse or gamebirds. They will also eat carrion, but appear to be more submissive than other scavengers and will wait until those animals have left before taking some for themselves.
Short-tailed Pygmy-tyrant Propaganda
"small. hilarious name-bird combo"
"the smallest bird in the world after several species of hummingbirds. Naming this beast a "tyrant" is the funniest thing ever. Also I'm tail-shaming it" (for reference: tyrant refers to the family this bird belongs to- tyrant flycatchers, which are named after kingbirds)
"Although its plumage is similar to some other tyrant flycatchers, in the field the bird is more often mistaken for a large beetle or insect, especially while in flight... Its flight movements have a mechanical-feel that enhances the insect comparison." - Wiki

Hello tumblr friend, I searched your blog trying to answer my own questions, but ultimately, I'll defer to your wisdom. I'm writing a group for one of my games that will be known as 'the Crimson Buzzards'. Would "Burusa" be the correct/best word for it, or did I not dig deep enough? Thank you, you do great work!
Great work on your research! Yes, burusa would be one way to translate the phrase "crimson buzzard(s)", though you have a few other options as well. Buru (𒉢𒁓𒄷) can mean "some sort of bird of prey or vulture, crow", though te (𒀉𒄷) is the more specific way to translate "buzzard, bearded vulture", and urbigu (𒌨𒁉𒅥𒄷) means "vulture" in general, derived from the word for "jackal" and in turn from ur "dog".
"Red" is indeed sa or sua, and this is probably the closest match we have for "crimson". (Sa is written a number of ways in cuneiform, including 𒋜.) The other main word for red, dara 𒁱, is associated with blood and darker colors, like spilt/dried blood, rather than bright red as we might think "blood-red" would mean.
You can combine these as you did, with the adjective attached to the noun it modifies. So burusa, tesa and urbigusa would all be correct!

🍓 are there any liches in jackal gulch? 👀
SO. No, but liches are one of the inspiration for Jackal Gulch's version of vampires.
The Moralado are a type of fey working under the Buzzard Lord (also referred to as The Moralado, sorry for being confusing). They are vulture-like fey shapeshifters that wither and suck the life out of what they touch. They're often in the form of vultures, picking at the corpses of animals and those unfortunate enough to die in the desert. They are also sent on behest of the Buzzard Lord to revive/"turn" mortals that could be useful to them in the future.
They're sort of the representation of undeath in the world. There's a belief that when someone dies with unfinished business, sometimes the buzzards will circle above their body and a dead man's eyes will open once more. It's also commonly thought that they can enchant a person by circling overhead, and that if you wake up in the scrublands so tired you can barely move, you've been preyed on by a Moralado.
People can become a Moralado by offering themself to the Buzzard Lord's service and making a deal with him, exchanging one of their bones, etching their soul onto it, and letting him place it in his Bone Spire in return for eternal life and vampiric powers.
