Rein Sanction • Mariposa (Sub Pop, 1992) “Rein Sanction was formed in the summer of 1981 in Jacksonville, Florida. The original line-up featured Mark Gentry (vocals, guitar), Brannon Gentry (drums) and Ian Chase (bass). Chase was a neighbor of the Gentry brothers. The band was founded during the early teenage years of its members; the earliest version of the band was heavily influenced by contemporary acts such as Joy Division and U2. The band's style soon changed after Mark Gentry started to study jazz and classical and was exposed to the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Hüsker Dü.[3] Rein Sanction debuted with a self-titled 12-inch EP in 1989.[4] In 1991, the band released its debut album, Broc's Cabin, on Sub Pop. The record was produced by Kramer, the founder of the record label Shimmy Disc. Its follow-up, 1992's Mariposa, was produced by Jack Endino. Jack Endino is probably best known for his early work with Nirvana. The record producer, recording engineer, mixer, and musician from Seattle has worked on over 500 records for bands from 14 countries on 4 continents since 1986.

Endino made a name for himself, by helping unknown artists do the same. Working as “the guy in the engine room” during the early voyages of the battleship “Grunge” in the late 80s, many of the early releases that put Seattle label Sub Pop on the map have his name on them.

Mudhoney, Nirvana, TAD, Soundgarden, L7, Mark Lanegan, Hot Hot Heat, and a ridiculous list of others carry the effect of his influence. He is also known as the former guitar player for Skin Yard; which made 5 albums between 1985 and 1992, some on a subsidiary (Cruz Records) of the legendary SST label.

Among all other core ideals, within the Jack Endino “production philosophy,” is the concept that the artist is the artist and the engineer is there to capture their creation or performance. To many fans and aspiring engineers, turning back to the early days of recording for exactly that purpose, the entire grunge/alternative rock style was triggered by the first exposure to those Nirvana albums...

I'm writing this two weeks after the murder of #georgefloyd. We all know that this shit goes on all the time and that being Black in America is dangerous, to say the least. I pick the order of releases like a DJ picking records on a show. It's a playlist. And hopefully if you listen in chronological order by release date it flows. So, Oz Noy was last and I thought okay, let's bring it back to the roots, seeing this is a blues series...so I cull through the 135 unreleased mastered tracks that we currently have and I come to #jamesarmstrong and it speaks to me. It hits me not just because it is a more traditional #blues number, it's soulful, understated, classic, it is all of the above...but it also strikes a strong but melancholy chord, without words it says that thing that we all know, that life as a Black person in America is and has always been dangerous and systematically unfair. Then, coincidentally, I see James has posted a video on Facebook telling his #truth in response to George Floyd's murder sharing just a few of the countless injustices that he (James) has experienced at the hands of law enforcement. And I just keep hearing the words "enough is enough" in my head. No explanation necessary, right? So, after checking in with James to make sure that he was cool with me titling the track Enough Is Enough (considering the context I wanted to err on the side of thoughtfulness and consideration), here it is.
