if the skirt fits ; andy barber x reader
Tumblr media
summary: Andy finds a little secret of yours.
warnings: heavily implied s~mut; costume kink (minors DNI!), familial fluff & mild humour!
a/n: you don't know how happy I am for finally sharing this piece with y'all, considering how it has been collecting dust in my drafts since LAST YEAR, but here it is; one of my earliest ideas for the series! don’t forget to leave some sugar! ᐠ( ᐛ )ᐟ
» wanna know what I have in store this fall? come & check out my m.list for 'reve's quirky reverie 🕷️'!
Tumblr media
“It fits you perfectly,” He purred, almost deep in thought—probably in his own fantasy, “So perfectly.” ;
"You could dress up as Jason?" You suggested what might’ve been the seventh costume idea since the drive home from dinner at the Thai restaurant nearby.
"Done that." Jacob replied as he leaned forward from his seat to talk to you and his father.
"Spiderman?"
"I feel like everyone's dressing up as Spiderman this year."
"But not everyone's going to dress up as the same one." You had a point, considering how you and his dad were the first victims of his Spiderverse fixation since the second movie was released, so you knew what you were talking about.
"I guess,” Jacob thought for a moment before falling back in his seat, taking your idea into consideration, “I guess I just want something… different."
"If you want different, then we could get you one of those inflatable dinosaur costumes on the internet." Andy held a playful look even as his eyes remained on the road.
"Very funny, dad." His son grumbled, despite fighting back his own smile.
"Aw, cheer up, Jake. You've got time." You reassured him.
“Yeah… And I’m not too worried. The store next to Aunt Sarah’s bakery got some cool stuff when I bought last year’s costume,” Jacob mused before asking you, "What about you, mom? Have you thought of a costume yet?"
Ah, mom. Even after all this time, you and Andy will never get tired of him calling you that.
"Mmm, not yet. But when I do, I'll make sure you're the first to know." You and Jacob shared a smile in the rear-view mirror, only to be interrupted by Andy clearing his throat.
"Uh, you're gonna tell him first and not me?" He cocked his head, feigning disbelief.
"Of course. You lost that privilege when you suggested Jake the dinosaur costume." You and Jacob laughed as Andy dramatically groaned, telling you ‘I didn’t mean it’ in an angsty teenager tone.
Tumblr media
"I am not dressing up Ken." Andy answered, removing his watch and leaving it on the vanity table.
"Oh, c'mon, Cowboy Barber has a nice ring to it." You said with a lilt.
"And where exactly am I going to find a Western shirt in my size?" He quirked an eyebrow at you.
"We could always ask the Flags. Her husband might have one hidden somewhere."
"Just because we've seen him with a cowboy hat last Halloween?" He remembered seeing him wearing one during the community party at the park.
"You'd never know. Barbie and Ken are safer than your recommendation." You opened the closet without taking your accusatory eyes off him.
"What's wrong with a devil and an angel?"
"Andy." Surely he could tell how ridiculous he sounded.
"It's… easy…? And you'd look really good in it." He tried to persuade you, standing next to you.
"At a party full of kids?" You weren't sure how the parents that were a little more… conservative would feel about their kids' teacher dressing up like that.
"I didn't say it was for Wilson's party. It's for our afterparty," He wiggled his brows, "Just you and me while Jake stays over at the Wilson's."
You snorted. How cheesy of him.
"Wilson's party first, then whatever you want after," You turned back to the hanging clothes, "And besides, you should be the devil, not me."
That wasn't a no.
"You know what," He pursed his lips, already considering your idea—especially with the black suit he knew you'd melt over, plus a red tie before dodging the swat of your hand with a laugh. Just then, he noticed you'd been searching for something for a while, unbuttoning his cuffs and folding his sleeves before asking, “Need some help?”
“I can’t find my panties. The baby blue ones.” You frowned.
“The one with the lace?” He asked, prompting you to nod, “I mean, as much as I love seeing you in those, you know I don’t mind you without any in the first place.”
“Nice try, Barber," You narrowed your eyes at him, gesturing to the drawers in front of him before you rummaged through the pile of folded clothes on the bottom rack, “Help me search the drawers, please.”
He did as he was told, looking through the first stack before moving on to the next.
There was little progress in your searches but your curiosity was only piqued when out of the corner of your eye, Andy was looking closely at something.
“Did you find it?”
He took a quick breath before answering, “No, but I did find something better.”
You furrowed your brows, standing up to ask what he meant by that until you caught sight of the familiar skirt he held.
Plaid, grey and extremely short.
Uh oh.
You clasped your hands together in front of your tummy as you stared at the microskirt with wide eyes. You were even failing to notice him slowly breaking into a smirk. He didn’t stop there, reaching into the drawer he was looking into with his other hand to take out the matching tie. Your lips parted, darting your eyes between the article of clothing and the smug look on his face.
“I can explain,” You finally spoke up, your voice softer than you hoped for.
“Please, do,” He held the ends of the untied tie with both hands, “Because I’m pretty sure these are too small to be mine.”
Oh, he was going to have some fun with this.
“Well, it’s, y’know,” You moved your hands around, only to silently plea for him to understand without having you say it, “Andy, c’mon. You know what it is.”
It wasn’t enough for him, though, raising his brows and encouraging you to continue.
He was clearly enjoying this. A whole lot.
Unbelievable.
“It’s my old costume.”
He hummed, appraising the garment as he immediately imagined what you would look like in it, “So my pretty girl has a dirty secret of her own. Did you break any necks when you pranced around the neighbourhood in this?”
“In my defence, I only wore that once, when I was in college, so,” You corrected him, recalling the party you attended in your final year.
“So, you broke college boys’ necks.”
“I didn’t say that,” You shook your head in amusement, “I just didn’t have the heart to give it away. It was just one of those rare times where I truly enjoyed living in the city.”
Though the city wasn’t far from Reve Road, and hell, you’ve even thought about moving back once or twice in your earlier days, truthfully, you haven’t been there in ages, and thank goodness, too. What would life be like if you hadn’t stayed, made a name in the peaceful neighbourhood and met the Barbers?
"Do you miss it?"
"Sometimes," You mustered a small smile, though it didn't quite reach your eyes, "But I had my fun. Grew up to be a city girl, earned my degree and let out my ‘wilder’ side a couple of times. But I love it here more, and if I want to keep my job, the last thing my students and my son need to see when they go trick-or-treating is their Literature teacher in this."
You shared a hearty laugh. Your wonders about who or what you could’ve been if you stayed in the city were nothing more than a mere curiosity, and even then, it hardly mattered to you now.
“Wouldn’t hurt to relive the old days here in our room.” Oh?
"You can't be serious," You chuckled nervously, "It might not even fit."
You were lying—you barely looked any different from your college years. You just weren’t sure if you were ready to see his reaction over such scandalous attire.
"All the more reason to try it," He replied confidently, closing the gap between the two of you. His voice deepened as he whispered, "C’mon. You can be a good girl for me, can’t you?"
Like the gentleman he was, he used your weakness against you.
You knew you were done for when you gulped under his intense stare, cocking his head in the bathroom’s direction.
You snatched the garments out of his grasp, the ‘deathly’ glare on your face contrasted with his conceited one as you obtained the shirt that came with it out of the same drawer. He continued to hold your gaze even as you closed the door.
Once you were alone, you couldn’t help but let out a silent scream.
You were too embarrassed to even face the mirror as you got dressed, not until you slid on the last piece—the skirt before turning around to look at yourself. You could barely acknowledge the coincidence of covering your face with your hands like a bumbling schoolgirl.
Because that was exactly what you looked like.
You remembered washing the set a couple of times after your first and only wear, and even then, you didn’t think the skirt could shrink that little. Your ass was hanging out of the hem, offering an ample peek at the black bikini brief you had taken with you.
You came out of the bathroom, ignoring the warmth spreading through your body as you were met with Andy sitting at his side of the bed, shamelessly displaying the prominent tent bulging in his pants.
He hummed in approval before beckoning you to his lap, "Come here."
You kept your gaze on the ground as you walked over to him, standing in between his legs.
"Come here." He repeated, this time, forcing you to maintain eye contact as he tapped his knee.
You let out the softest whimper, your arms encircling his neck before straddling one of his thick thighs. He rested his hands on your hips, only to run them up and down your body, watching your face already contorting between bashfulness and desire.
“It fits you perfectly,” He purred, almost deep in thought—probably in his own fantasy, “So perfectly.”
He pulled you closer, bouncing his knee to rub against your clothed sex. Electricity coursed through your body over the not-so-innocent move, your breathing growing heavier by the second as he teased you further.
“But you haven’t answered my question yet. Did they or did they not stare at you when you wore this?”
He rendered you speechless. You were beginning to think your heart might burst out of your chest at any point.
“I’m sure they did,” A part of him wanted to be annoyed but miffed was a better way to put it. Not at you, though, he could never. You were just trying to have fun and make the most out of what life had to offer. But if he was there to see you in this the first time you had it, likely showing your wilder side, oh, he couldn’t lie and say you wouldn’t catch his eye either.
“But I guess that doesn’t matter anymore,” His hands slid past the hem, lifting it for him to drink in the sight of your curves, “It’s just you and me now.”
You dropped your head on his shoulder, hoping to stifle the moan that threatened to slip past your lips.
“Just imagine me bending you over the bed so I can get a peak of what’s mine underneath,” He sighed dreamily, smiling when your ass jiggled as he grabbed at and squeezed them, “Or should I throw you on the bed and have you on your knees?”
You didn’t answer, too focused on the way he groped your body until you jumped at the resounding crack and the sting that came with it on your left cheek.
"Does it come with thigh highs?" He asked ever so casually as if he wasn’t straining to have you just as much as you were him.
"I-It did, but… I kinda lost it."
"That's fine. I can always get you a new one," He nosed your jaw, "In fact, I'll buy you more than just a pair. Maybe match some with your panties."
You mewled, raising your head and granting him access to your neck.
“You'd do everything your favourite professor tells you to do, wouldn’t you?”
Fuck.
“Andy, I–” You nearly called him Professor Barber when the sounds of knocking on your door caused you and your husband to freeze up.
"Mom, dad,” It was Jacob, “I think Beemo's been collecting… socks under the couch?"
Like a fish out of water, your mind was too blank to respond or even acknowledge the question. Thankfully, Andy was able to do it for you, “We’ll be right there!”
The two of you waited until his footsteps receded before you were able to let out a sigh of relief. Andy, on the other hand, had the audacity to chuckle at you. There was no reason for you to worry about scarring Jacob since Andy had already locked the door.
“Very funny.” You murmured sarcastically, moving off him and loosening the tie, hoping to ignore the ache in between your legs for the time being.
“Hilarious,” He cockily added, standing up with an almost pained groan. He stood behind you before wrapping his arms around your waist, “But this isn’t over.”
You stopped.
“I meant what I said about buying you thigh highs with it. Or better yet, some fishnets because my wife’s not so innocent after all.”
Despite getting cockblocked, he was immensely satisfied to see you shiver.
‘Beemo, are you collecting underwear too?’ You heard Jacob ask the cat incredulously, only for a ‘wait!’, followed by his footsteps going down the stairs, probably chasing the feline with whoever’s briefs or undies he had in his mouth. You could only hope it wasn’t yours.
“And, that’s our cue,” His shoulders slumped, only to growl in your ear, “Wear this for me tomorrow after dinner.”
He then released you with a big smooch on your cheek, exiting the room to find his son, but not before winking at you.
Leaving you to wonder on your own if he’d throw you on the bed or have you on his lap tomorrow.

Request: Andy Barber x teen!daughter!reader
Plot: She has a sit down with him to confront him as to why men get distant from their daughter/niece as the girl gets older. She gets a bit mad when Jacob throws in the ‘probably just cause she’s getting older’ while he’s getting a juice or something from the kitchen. But Andy smooths it out in saying he’s only distant due to work, so he makes it more of a priority to bond with his daughter even though she’s not so small anymore nor does she enjoy all that he does like to do.
(sorry that it’s so descriptive )

You and your dad were sitting in the living room. You decided that today would be the day to confront your father about his distance behavior.
"So what do you want to talk about"-said Andy.
"I-I feel like you don't wanna spend time with m-me anymore and i have this feeling for like slowly a year now."
"Dad Please be honest with me why are you getting so distance?"-you whimpered out.
Jacob who was just going to the kitchen wanted to mess with you as always so he joined the conversation.
"Y/n dad clearly doesn't spend time with you because you're getting older and you're no longer his little girl."
"Jacob!"-shouted Andy.
"Jacob why can't you leave me alone!"
"Gosh"-Jake murmured and he went back to his room.
Silence.
"Is that true dad!?"-you asked.
"God, sweetheart no, I love so much. I'm sorry that you feel like i'm avoiding you..."-your dad sighed.
"Work is difficult lately and so frustrating I know it's no excuse for my behavior and i'm really sorry for that."
"Oh-"
"But you know what. tomorrow the first thing I will do is call my assistant and I cancel all my programs for you and we can spend a lot of time together just the two us."-Andy smiled at you.
"But what about what jake said? doesn't it bother you that I'm getting older?"-you asked.
"No, sweetheart i don't care. In my eyes you Always be my little girl."
"Thank you dad"-You felt relieved.
Andy leaned closer and pulled you into a tight hug.
"I love you dad."
"I love you too honey" Andy kissed your forehead.

In the neighborhood, they were the perfect little family. His life was like a movie that run smoothly in a town somewhere in the United States; a nice American house, cars, a decent job that paid well, a sweet wife, and an unproblematic teenage son. Everyone in that town knew the Barbers. But it was not because of their perfect little family. The Barbers were known from the unfortunate event that changed their family two years ago.
Ever since the accident happened, Andy was not the same man. His blue eyes never shined as it was before. His suit used to make him walk proudly on every trials he went on. Now, he walked like a lifeless man, sometimes he seemed like a colorless attorney in the courtroom. Everyone’s eyes were on him. Most of them were giving the pity look as Andy walked into his cold empty house.
It was an innocent glance at first. Andy was walking through the hallway when his blue eyes met yours. He nodded and smiled politely before going into the management office. Laurie, his now-ex-wife, was working as one of the managers. During their divorce process, you kept meeting him in the office. You always excused yourself every time he came. Rumor was heard that Andy was delivering some divorce paperwork. Probably that rumor was true. In couple of weeks, Laurie was no longer wearing the wedding ring, so did Andy. That was when everything began.
Now, Andy was living by himself. Occasionally, you visited him to deliver some lunch and dinner. These foods turned into front porch conversations, eventually turned into multiple dates. It was not easy since you worked at the same place with Laurie. Jacob also had not woken up from his coma, yet. However, you promised yourself to make this thing works. You needed Andy as much as he needed you.
Today was another day where you delivered some food to Andy. You confidently knocked at his door. Andy opened the door with a soft smile in his face. He had dark circle under his eyes, but his bright blue eyes and smile greeted you warmly. It was one of his charms; no matter how tired he was, he always capable of welcoming you. His arm snaked around your waist as he pushed you closer to him. A small gasp escaped your lips.
“What are you doing?” You were startled by his sudden movement.
“What?” He shrugged, “You don’t like it?”
“It’s just… um… It doesn't feel like Andy Barber at all.”
“Well, you were in awe when you saw it on the movie. Maybe I could give it a try, ya know.”
You giggled looking at your puzzled boyfriend. He sure was a good observant. Raising eyebrows, you were signaling him to let you in the house. Boston air was always unbearable during the month.
“I won’t let you in if you don’t stop giggling!” He pouted.
“Aren’t you a cute little boy. C’mon stop pouting and let me in. How if anyone sees us?”
“Okay. I let you in because you think I’m cute.” He pecked your lips. “But who cares if anyone sees us? You know Laurie and I aren’t together anymore.”
“But the divorce was months ago. Don’t you think it’s too soon?”
“Honey, when I said who cares, I meant it. Let them say whatever they want to say. All I know is that I love you. Period. And nothing in this world can stop me showing all of my love to you.”
“Alright, show me then.”
He did as he was told, wrapping his arms around you tightly. Your faces inches away from each other. He looked at you in your eyes and you could see the love in his, again. You could see his pupil dilated. His eyes were much deeper and brighter shade of blue. Even though they were different than the normal ones you saw every time, you did not care. You knew they were blue and nothing else mattered anymore.
He gave you a light kiss. Then he kissed you again. And again. And again. He kissed you so many times you didn’t know how you would remember them all. He kissed you, and you thought to yourself; it was the most amazing kiss of your life. You held him closer to you, like he would disappear if you lost your grip. You wanted him to; you wanted him to stay by your side forever.
Tumblr media
The snow started falling in the windshield. Her breath fogged the rearview mirror as she checked herself again. The cold air pinched her skin when she stepped out of her car. Her hands were scrabbling the back of her car to find a coat. It still smelled like her scent with a little hint of his.
It took her a minute before her knuckles touched the wooden door. A knock then followed by another. She could hear the sound of footsteps approaching the door.
"Laurie!" Your heart dropped as soon as you opened the door. "Andy's showering and I think he'll be done soon. Umm - Wanna come in?"
"Nah, I'm good. Can you just tell him that the hospital called. Jacob is awake."
"Oh! That's a wonderful news! I'm so happy for both of you."
You went in to hug her. Her eyes teared up a little. Before she cried, she hurriedly excused herself. Jacob news was one thing, but the seeing you in used to be - her house was a whole different thing. Since when the two of you were a thing. There were lots of things that she felt in that moment. One of them was jealousy.
What was the hug for? She kept repeating the question in her mind. She clearly knew that shirt was his. The shirt that she used to iron the night before the trial. She could swear that you purposely hugged her to show how much scent of him you got in you. You were sleeping in that bed, with him, reminding her how warm it used to be when she was lying there in his arm.
Deep down she tried to reassure herself. Andy once hers. He loved her first. There was no way you could replace her, his first love since college. She took one last look at the house as she smiled painfully. It used to be her place. It used to be the only space where she wanted to be. In a matter of time, it would be hers again. Andy was hers once and she knew how to make him hers again.
Tumblr media
Andy hugged you tight and kissed you as soon as he heard the news. The news that he wanted to hear every time he visited his son in the hospital. You can see a little skip he made as he walked to his car with joy. The snow started falling and the wind blew quite strong. That did not make him stop his track. But when he realized that you stopped at the front porch, he stopped in confusion. You could listen to him calling you by the look of his face. The news itself terrified you. You were happy for Andy, you really were. But the thought of Jacob’s reaction haunted you.
“Honey?”
“Maybe it’s better to go by yourself.”
The vapor came out from his mouth as he walked towards you. He called you once again as he knew you would tell him sooner.
“Okay,” you exhaled, “Is it too soon to tell Jacob about me? Or about us?”
“I know my son well. I can do the talking and you don’t have to worry about a single thing.”
You hesitantly agreed. To be honest, it was not only about Jacob. It was also about Laurie. She knew that you were sleeping with her ex-husband. The meeting this morning, you could call that the most awkward moment in your life. What would happen next? As if Andy could see your worries, he hugged you and kissed your forehead softly.
“We got this.”
You smiled up at him, holding his hand as he drove. He looked happy, but at the same time, you could see he was worried. You did too, you were. You wanted to get this over with. It was only a few miles before arriving at the hospital, and now you had nothing but worries.
Andy footsteps became faster and faster as he got closer to the room. You waited outside with the hope that everything was going to be okay. The light in Andy’s eyes were different. It was pure excitement and happiness like you never seen before. All you wanted was Andy to finally get his happiness.
After a while, Andy was walking out from the room. His expression was something that you could not understand. It was a mixture of relief, yet he had worried eyes. Something did not feel right. You guided him to sit next to you. There was explosion of curiosity, but you would not ask him until he said it himself. He sat down weakly with his head down. You kneeled in front of him, lifting his head up. You brushed his beard softly.
“Do you want to tell me about it?”
“Yes.” He exhaled. “The doctor said that Jacob lost his memory partially.”
You could see he was a little hesitant to talk about it. His face contorted. This was the face when he could not win a case in court. The face that you had not seen in a long time. He might be forgotten what it felt like until now.
“He remembers things way far before the accident. The most important thing is the doctor said it would be best if –“
“If?”
“I and Laurie are … together. Helping him adjusting to his new life slowly.”
A short ‘oh’ came out from your mouth. It was working well between you and Andy. Plus, the progress of Jacob, you thought everything was going in your favor. Now, it was not something that you imagined. Seeing Andy and Laurie back together again, even it was just for show, there were questions and questions that flooded your mind. How if Andy caught in the scenario and unable to escape his feeling? What if your relationship lost because of his old memory?
You did not realize that Andy had been calling you as you drown in your thoughts. He was asking whether you would be okay with that. You really loved him, and you just want the best for his happiness if that included sacrifice for his son, Jacob.
“Yeah. Anything for Jacob. I’ll be okay. It is just for a while, right?”
Tumblr media
Jacob was fast asleep. Laurie peeked before she went out of the room. A smile of victory clearly displayed as she witnessed how devastated both Andy and you. She knew that she was not a bad person. Wanting her family getting back together was not a crime. As the doctor spoke to her and Andy, letting know that they had to be together again, fireworks sparked in her heart. Everything would be back as if nothing had ever happened. You were just little pebbles in her way. She was sure that once Andy felt her warmth again, he would forget you. All it took for her was to put on the best show that she needed to do.
She opened the door and walked out slowly, letting her presence known to both of you. After exchanging few words with Andy, she nodded politely and excused herself. She could not wait to pack all of her stuffs and place it back inside that house.
She watched you and Andy said goodbye from a far inside her car. A woman knows another woman, that was she thought when she saw you trying to look happy in front of him. Andy might be good in reading people’s expressions, but he was fool enough to realize your real emotions. She knew that she should not feel happy right now, but she deserved this moment. Life had given her a second chance to rebuild her family. Jacob did not remember about the accident and Andy would be living with her again. She would not mess it up again.
Moments after she arrived, Andy helped her to bring her stuff upstairs. After a long cold nights in her bed alone, she was finally back sleeping with him. All the memories flooded her mind as she stepped into that two-story house. She remembered Andy’s warm breath as she rested her head on his chest while his hand brushed against her head. No matter how bad the situation was, he was always there to ease her worries away every night. Her hands felt the softness of the fresh sheet on the bed. This was it, her fresh beginning to be the perfect family again.
Couple of weeks had passed since Jacob was home. Andy was always there for his recovery. He spent time with Jacob after work until nighttime. It had become a routine that she would stop by Jacob’s room to remind them for dinner. They would gather and talk about their day on the dining table. Mostly, Jacob told his stories about everything that he learnt during homeschooled. After dinner, Andy would talk with Jacob when they enjoyed watching football until Jacob almost fell asleep on the couch. Laurie watched everything and smiled. She did it. She almost did it.
As soon as Jacob fell asleep, Andy was a distant person. They did not spoke a single word to each other. She tried to start any conversation with Andy, but he would respond shortly. He spent every night sleeping in the guest room. The bed still felt cold. It did not even smell like him. It smelled like her scent and the fabric softener or whatever detergent on his side of the bed. Andy also often spent days doing his works and did not come home. She never wanted to know whatever he was working on. It was too much for her to understand. Besides, he would be home again to spend time with her and Jacob in any other days. She could not object to any of his decision. She just needed to give him time until he realized that he missed his old life.
She watched her son had fallen asleep on his bed. As she closed the gap on the curtain, she could see the beautiful night outside. It made her think that it had been a long time since she enjoyed running around the neighborhood. She knew Andy would not be home tomorrow as he was gone for three days working. That was when she decided to take her usual track to jog at night.
Her footstep stopped only couple blocks away from her house. She noticed a black Audi parked in front of a house. The exact same Audi that her ex-husband drove to a “three days work”. Her mind and her heart were racing. The scenarios that often came to her mind, which she brushed them off, finally happened. She did not know what was gotten into her, she walked quickly towards the door of the house. Knocking like a really scared person, she was also tapping her heels waiting nervously. Footsteps were heard approaching the door.
You opened the door. And Andy’s voice echoed from inside.
“Who is it, honey?”
Tumblr media
You instantly froze as you found her standing in front of you. You could not even hear when Andy called. He walked to you. His hand grabbed your hand and held you tight.
“Explain yourself.” She clenched her jaw.
“Why?”
“You have your family waiting for you at home. But YOU- “, her fist rolled before she pointed at him, “you spent night in ANOTHER woman house! Is this what you called working?”
“Laurie!”
“NO! Don’t!” Her finger moved to point at you, “And you… how dare you take my family away from me? Have you got no shame?”
Andy stepped forward as he told you to stand behind him. He pushed her hand away.
“Do. Not. Raise. A Finger. On. Her.” He used his deep cold voice to talk with her. “I have enough of YOU and your little game. You thought I did not notice every time you tried to make me stay a little longer. Or the time when you tried to make as many ‘innocent’ contacts as possible, like a desperate woman trying to make be stay in bed with you.”
Laurie tried to talk back but Andy stopped her.
“What we had is over. I do everything for Jacob- “
“I do it for Jacob too! He is my son!”
“He is NOT your son since the day of the accident. You know what, this is over. I’ll talk to Jacob tomorrow that we’re done. Consider it as your mercy because I will never bring up the accident to him.”
Laurie was speechless. Her tears started to pile up on her eyes. She went back to her house without saying a single word. You could not help but felt pity on her. She was just a mother who wanted to have her family back as it used to. As if Andy could read your mind, he brought you inside to tell the truth that he never told anyone.
You never saw him this broken before. He told you everything that Laurie told him long time ago, after the accident happened. It was all because she could not believe her own son. He broke down as he remembered those hard times when he only had himself to stay strong. You could not say anything. Instead, you hugged him tight as you brushed his hair to calm him down. Both of you ended up fall asleep in each other embraces.
That night had somehow become another forgotten night. Andy had told Jacob that he and Laurie decided to go separate ways. He was a grown-up teenager. He understood everything without wanting to dive whatever his parents had on each other. Introducing you to him was another step that Andy took after a while. Having interacted with bunch of teenagers on your work, you got along pretty well with Jacob. You knew it still need time for you and Jacob to completely becoming close. But both of you tried the best for Andy.
Brighter morning had come. Summer came sooner in Newton. The warmth of the sun slowly crept in your hands as you made breakfast in the kitchen. Andy went to the kitchen. His big arms hugged you from behind. You turned around to see him clearly. His blue eyes matched with the light blue shirt that hugged his figure tight. He looked better as the sun shone brightly outside. He gave you a kiss, usual morning greeting that he did before Jacob was awake. You stepped away as you heard Jacob was coming down the stairs.
“We don’t have to keep sneaking around soon. I promise.” He whispered.
All of you ate breakfast together. You could not stop laughing with Jacob while Andy was explaining his dad jokes that both of you could not understand. This was the family life that Andy always imagined living with you for the rest of his life. Seeing you and Jacob could get along well, butterflies filled his stomach. He never felt this kind of way since he was in high school. He seemed like teenagers drunken in love all over again.
“Andy?”, you snapped your fingers. “Andy?”
“Oh sorry. What was you’re saying?”
“Aren’t you going to work? You’re going to be late if you don’t move now.”
Andy went to work. You were cleaning the kitchen as Jacob was packing his stuff. Today, he would be going to Laurie’s place. He was going to stay for a week. He could not stop teasing you, knowing that Andy and you would be alone when he was away. You never saw him this playful before and you were grateful for it.
The giggling suddenly went quiet. You did not notice since you were busy washing the dishes. Then, Jacob sobbed and wailed in pain. You rushed upstairs only to find him fainted on the floor. You immediately called Andy in panic. Before Andy reached his office, he made a sharp turn upon your call. He rushed upstairs and brought Jacob to the hospital. You watched your surroundings to check anything that caused all of this. Andy might not notice it, but there was an old court file filled with evidence, news, and other stuffs. You flipped to see the label of the file. Case Against Laurie Barber; Victim: Jacob Owen Barber; Status: Dismissed (Accident).
It did not take long until Andy arrived at the hospital. Both of you waited nervously. He kept telling you not to, but he could not stop shaking his legs. He’ll be okay. Words that he repeated to you and mostly to himself, assuring that Jacob had been through the worst, and he survived. Moment passed and the doctor had let Andy’s in. Not long after, Andy called you to joined him.
You knew Jacob was sick, but his face looked paler than usual. He showed more than discomfort. Andy’s face also got serious. You did not know what was going on. Your eyes kept looking for clue from Andy, but he was distracted.
“I don’t think I should be here.”
“No, wait!” Jacob kept you from going. “I think I need you here.”
You agreed without asking a question. Jacob might not be ready to tell you everything. Andy watched the sky as you sat next to Jacob. You held his hand as you brushed his hair gently. The medication calmed him down as he slowly drifted to sleep. You offered to call Laurie. Suddenly, he stopped you. He led you outside the room before he told you everything.
You could imagine it was hard for Jacob to remember everything. Andy was there to listen every story that he had to say. You could see that Andy was furious. He never knew that Laurie purposely kept stepping on the gas before the car hit a wall. You held his fisted palm and softly stroke it with your fingers. He took a deep breath and calmed himself down.
"Remember, she wasn't thinking straight. It wasn't easy for her."
"What would I do if you weren't here?" He kissed your forehead. "But how did he manage to find the court file?"
"We were planning on moving. Some documents may accidently fall. Unfortunate for him that he found it." You tried to reassure Andy. "Look, it doesn't matter now. Just go inside and help Jacob understand everything. He only can trust you now. I’ll call Laurie. She deserved to know about her son condition."
Tumblr media
Her walk seemed like little run as she rushed to the hospital. She would never think going back here to see Jacob. You were supposed to drive him to her. But she got the call from Andy that Jacob went to the hospital. Still in her jogging set, she jumped on the car straight away. As she drove to the hospital, a lot of things fogged her mind. Maybe it was the side effect of the accident that time. She could not stop feeling guilty since the day she woke up in the hospital, meanwhile, Jacob was lying unconscious for years.
She supposed to be able to go and see her son. Instead, the door was blocked by you. You did not let her pass the door. She could not handle any bullshit with you anymore. As she tried to barge in, Andy stopped her track. Now, she felt that her ex-husband and his new lover were going against her. She did not want to listen any words that you and Andy wanted to say. She was Jacob’s mother after all. You and Andy finally gave up and let her in.
“Why are you here? How dare you to show up here?”
“Jacob! I am your mother. What’s gotten into you?”
Jacob went into another hysteric episode. The doctor had to rush in to give him another sedative. Andy rushed to dragged her out of the room. She was too weak to even stand up. She dropped on her knees as she cried really loud. You went to calm Jacob down and Andy went to talk to Laurie. All you can do was hoping that Andy could keep his composure and acted wise.
“I’m sorry I can’t tell you anything.”, Jacob said with a sleepy face. “One day, I promise I will.”
“It’s okay”, you smiled softly as you nodded, “whenever you’re ready. Now get some rest.”
He slowly drifted to sleep. Before that, he managed to whisper words to you.
“I’m glad dad found you.”
Tumblr media
You knew something was off when you saw Laurie had talked to the doctor before you and Andy were arrived. The custody of Jacob went to Andy. There was no way that the doctor only called Laurie when Jacob had been awake. As soon as Andy came to the conclusion that he had to live with Laurie, you knew it was her plan all along. You were confident that you would be able to crush that smug smile she showed you in the hospital. And sure enough, Andy would always find a way to his home, which is you.
Andy decided moving the house after his big fight with Laurie that night. You were rummaging through his office to clean up some of his stuff. An interesting file found hidden in the drawer of his desk. This was it! You told yourself. You would not let Laurie got away with her efforts trying to take Andy from you. All it took was to place it where Jacob could see it. You could not wait to see what show would be unfold with this file.
Laurie could put up any show she wanted, but you were giving her the best of show.
Oh about that Benjamin Rifkin, stabbing skinny teenager like him was an easy job for you. William Barber owed you for making him feel needed by his own son.

___
“How ya feelin’ buddy?” You ask your sweet A.J. from his place on the couch. Your poor baby was home sick today, which he hated, because he loved preschool. He was snuggled in his favorite Paw Patrol blanket with a cool compress on his forehead. “Does your tummy still hurt?”
A.J. shakes his head “no”. “I hungwy, Mama.”
“Okay.” You gingerly rub his belly. “You wanna try some soup?”
He nods. “Chicky stars pwease.”
“Comin’ right up, little dude. Drink your water, okay?”
Leaving him in the living room, you enter the kitchen, only to hear your phone ringing. Seeing it was your husband, you hit “answer”.
“Hey, Andy.” You greet him as you crack open a can of Campbell’s Chicken & Stars soup and pour it into a pot, along with some water, before turning on the burner. “What’s up, my love?”
“Nothing. About to go into a meeting. Just wanted to check on you and our little guy.”
His concern for you both makes you smile.
“We’re fine, baby. A.J.’s fever broke and he said his tummy doesn’t hurt anymore, so we’re gonna try some soup. I’ve got it heating up now. You wanna talk to him?”
“Sure.” Your husband chuckles. Leaving the soup on the stove you head back to the living room.
“A.J., someone wants to talk to you!” You tell him in a sing-song voice while dangling the phone in front of him. He quickly takes it out of your hand.
“Hello?” He asks, holding the phone to his ear.
“Hi, Junior! It’s daddy - how are you feeling, buddy?”
“Hi daddy! I is okay. Tummy better. No mo’ frow up.”
“Well, that makes me super happy to hear. Daddy was worried about you, little man.”
A.J. coughs a few times. “No worry bout dah A.J. I stwong. Tough wike daddy.”
You can hear Andy’s laughter from your place beside your son on the couch.
“You’re super tough, Junior. Ope - daddy’s gotta go, buddy. I love you.”
“Wuv too! Buh-bye.” Your baby ends the call before you can take the phone back.
Oh well. You’d see your man tonight.
Jogging back into the kitchen, you turn off the soup and ladle some into a bowl so that it can cool. While that’s doing its thing, fish out A.J.’s favorite Paw Patrol spoon. And then you pour him a little apple juice into a sippy cup.
Food in hand, along with some napkins, you return to where your sick little dude is resting. He sits up when he sees you, softly clapping his hands. “Fanks, Mama.”
“No problem, baby. Let Mama grab a tray and then she’ll get you all set up.”
“An’ den snuggies?”
“Yes, sweet boy. And then we can snuggle.”
Once you’ve got A.J. taken care of, you decide it’s time to make a little lunch for yourself. Perhaps a sandwich would –
*Ding*
The sound of the doorbell surprises you. Pivoting away from the kitchen, you turn and make your way to the front door. Assuming it was something from Amazon, you open the door with no real thought, only to step back in surprise when you get a look at the nervous woman standing on your front porch.
Gretchen?
“Um, hello. I’m, uh, um - is this - is this Andrew Barber’s house? Someone told me it was but…”
“Uhh…” Is all you can muster as all thoughts of lunch fly out the window. Or in this case, the open door.
“I’m Gretchen Talbert, his mother-in-law. I mean his former mother-in-law. Sorry.” She tries again.
You shake your head and clear your throat. “Yes, this is his house, I mean, our house. This is our house, together.” You respond, wincing at the defensiveness creeping into your tone.
“Right. You must be his wife. I’m sorry, I shouldn’t -” Gretchen stammers.
“How about we start this over?” You offer her your hand, which she accepts. “Hi, I’m Andy’s wife, Y/N. How can I help you, Ms. Talbert?” You give her what you hope comes off as a friendly smile.
“Please, call me Gretchen. And I was hoping to speak with Andrew about something. I know he sometimes works from his home office, or at least comes back for lunch, and I was hoping to catch him.”
“Well, he’s not here. And even if he was, I’m not sure if he’d want to see you.” You can tell your words hurt the woman, which wasn’t your intent. “I just mean, you two seeing each other might not be the best idea, is all.”
According to Andy, the last time the two of them had been in the same room things had gotten pretty explosive.
A tearful Gretchen nods her head.
Not wanting to continue having this conversation on your front porch, and needing to keep an ear out for your sick child, you invite her inside so that you’re both standing in the foyer. “Hold on a sec.” You tell her. “I’ve got a little one home from school.”
“A.J., baby, are you okay?” You call out.
“Yeah, Mama. Soup’s yummy!” He shouts back.
Satisfied that he was alright, you turn your attention back to the woman in front of you.
“Look, I um, was just about to make lunch. Why don’t you come in and join me?”
“No, no. It’s okay. You don’t have to -” She starts, slowly backing away.
You run a hand through your curls. “I know what I don’t have to do, Gretchen. But I would also like to avoid all this potential soap opera crap. So at least let me get you something to drink. And maybe you can tell me why you need to talk to Andy…”
___
“Thank you.” the older woman murmurs as she sips on her glass of raspberry iced tea.
“You’re welcome.” You respond as you finish prepping your roasted turkey sandwiches on ciabatta bread. “Mayo, mustard, or oil and red wine vinegar?”
“Oil and vinegar, please.”
“Excellent choice.” You say as you slather both sandwiches with the dressing before adding a dash of salt and pepper, as well as a pinch of garlic. You add some chips to your respective plates before joining your husband’s ex-mother-in-law at the kitchen table.
You and your husband’s ex-mother-in-law.
“Here you are.” The woman smiles and takes a bite.
“Good?” You ask. After all, you’d roasted the turkey yourself.
“Very.”
You both eat in silence for a few moments, unsure of where to begin. Your mind briefly wanders to A.J. and then you remind yourself that you’d already checked on him, giving him more soup and apple juice. Your kiddo was fine.
“I, um, I was surprised to see that you had a picture of Andy and Jacob in the entryway.”
You set down your sandwich and wipe your hands.
“We actually have pictures of him all throughout the house. We, Andy and I, felt that it was important for our children to get to know their brother.”
And that was the honest truth. Bianca had been incredibly curious about her late brother for the longest, and was always asking Andy to tell her stories about him. Over time, your other little ones had joined in and, after a long discussion between the two of you, you had decided that it was time to acknowledge Jacob. He deserved a presence in your home. And it was important that his half-siblings knew who he was.
“Wow.” She clears her throat. “Thank you, Y/N, for not, uh, forgetting my boy.” You reach over and grab her hand.
“Even if we wanted to, which we don’t, our babies wouldn’t let us. Your grandson, Jacob, is very much a part of this family, Gretchen. Whatever happened in the past deserves to be left firmly in the past. We all make mistakes. I know Jacob may or may not have made quite a few, but that doesn’t mean he’s not loved. It doesn’t mean that he doesn’t deserve to be remembered.”
The woman dabs her eyes with her napkin. “Thank you.” She whispers.
“Of course.”
“I have to say that you’re, uh, different than I thought you’d be. I mean, I had heard through the grapevine that Andy had remarried some years back, but…”
“And what exactly did you expect me to be like? A bitch?”
A sheepish Gretchen has the sense to look embarrassed. “I suppose so, yes.”
“I mean, that’s not my typical M.O, but I suppose we all have our days.”
“Right, of course.” She takes another bite of her food before washing it down with a sip of her drink. “May I ask just how many children you have?”
“Four. Although sometimes it feels like double that.” You tell her. “Three girls and a boy. Our oldest girl, Bianca, is eight, Katrina is five, and Rory and A.J. are both two. They’re twins by the way, in case you didn’t catch that.” You finish with a wink.
“Sounds like you’re a very busy woman.”
“Most days. But it’s worth it.” You offer up a shrug and a smile.
“I miss being a grandmother,” Gretchen whispers, tears once again filling her eyes. This time, a few manage to spill over. “I miss holding my baby. Both of them.”
“Gretchen…”
“I don’t know what happened. Maybe I should have paid better attention. Should’ve checked on Laurie and Jacob more when everything was going on. It was just…too much at times. It’s probably the reason your husband can’t seem to look at me and -”
“Gretchen, stop. Don’t take yourself down that road.” Your hand squeezes hers. “What is it you want from Andy? What are you looking for from him?”
You watch as the woman sobs softly into her napkin for another moment.
“I want Andy to come visit Jacob with me. His birthday is coming up and I want him to…” She clears her throat. “I want him to know that his father and grandmother came to see him. Together.”
You’re not sure why, but her request surprises you. Of all the things she could’ve wanted to ask your husband, you hadn’t been expecting that.
Her request makes your heart hurt. As a wife. As a parent. As a mother.
Just then, little A.J. toddles his cute self into the kitchen.
“All dun’ wif’ dah soup, Mama. Yummy.” He hands you his bowl and spoon and then he turns to Gretchen. “Hi miss lady. I sick. Mama say buggies in dah tummy.” He pokes his belly for emphasis.
“Well, I’m sorry you’re not feeling well, sweetheart.” The older woman tells him through her watery smile.
You pick him up and place him in your lap to check if he has a fever. Hmm…maybe a low grade one. You were going to have to end things with Gretchen soon. Plus, it was almost time for you to give your baby his cold medication.
“Mama, wan’ snuggies.” A.J. whines as he burrows deeper into your chest.
“I know bud. And I’m sorry. I was just talking to Jacob’s grandma for a minute.”
Your son looks between the two of you before settling his focus on the other woman at the table.
“Like our Jacob?” A.J. asks, his eyes wide.
“Yes, our Jacob.” You tell him. “This is his grandmama.” He turns to give her a shy wave, which she readily returns.
“Jacob mah bruver.” He tells her. “He in heaven now, but we still wuv ‘im.”
“I’m sure he loves you too, you sweet little boy.” She’s quick to assure him.
“Why don’t you tell Miss Gretchen your full name, A. J.? Go ahead.” Your baby puffs out his chest before responding.
“I is Andrew Jacob Barber Jr.”
“What a beautiful name. Thank you for sharing that with me.” She looks like she’s about to cry all over again.
“Welcome! Fweinds call muh’ A.J.”
“Alright, bud. Back to the couch. Mama will be in shortly.”
He scampers off and then moments later, you hear the sound of a door slam, followed by Andy’s voice as he checks on your son.
Once again, you reach over and grab Gretchen’s hand.
This was going to be awkward no matter what, but as long as Andy’s temper didn’t come into play, you’d all make it through this. Hopefully.
You both wait as you hear footsteps approach the kitchen.
“What the hell is this?” Your husband growls as he takes in the sight of the two of you sitting at the table, sharing a meal. “Why are you here, Gretchen? What are you doing in my home?”
“Our home, Andrew.” You mutter out the reminder.
“What?” He turns his glare on you.
“I said this is our home, and I invited her in. She would like to talk to you, and I think you should listen.”
Your husband stares you down, his captivating blue eyes are hard and unreadable.
“We have nothing to talk about.”
“From one mother to another, I wholeheartedly disagree. Step outside and talk to -”
“My ex-mother-in-law?”
“No, you buttface. I want you to go outside and talk with a mother who is grieving. Deeply. Please.”
He sighs and pinches the bridge of his nose. “I’m hungry and I’m tired and I’m not in the mood to hear about how much of a shit father this woman thinks I used to be.” He mumbles to nobody in particular.
“You’re hungry? Here.” You say as you hand him your plate. You’d only taken two bites of the damned sandwich and you could always make yourself another one. “Now, please. Walk Gretchen out and just listen to her.”
Andy accepts the plate with a nod before taking a bite. He takes a moment to wolf down the half you’d nibbled on before placing it back on the table.
“I’ll be back for the rest, Y/N.” He presses a kiss to your forehead. “Alright, Gretchen. Let’s talk.” ___
Nearly an hour later…
You’re snuggled up and dozing with a sleeping A.J. when Andy finally walks through the front door.
“Hey…” You whisper when he walks right past you without a word. Untangling yourself from your son, you follow your husband into the kitchen where you see him enjoying the second half of your sandwich.
You’d been so caught up in the drama that you’d forgotten to make yourself something else to eat. Trying to keep the mood casual, you walk over to the fridge and pull out all of the fixings to make another sandwich.
“How’d things go?”
“Fine.” Andy grunts through a mouthful of food.
“Just fine?” You ask as you place your turkey on the ciabatta before topping it with a piece of Muenster cheese. And then you go to slice your tomatoes and pickles.
He sighs. “We’re going to visit Jacob in a couple weeks for his birthday. Actually, we’re uh, gonna try to visit him together more often.” He clears his throat. “So he knows that we’re thinking about him.”
Andy looks over at you, his beautiful eyes welling with tears.
“He needs to know that his father thinks about him. All the time. And I need to tell him that myself.”
You glide over to your man, wrapping your arms around his big body.
“Yes, you do.” You wipe away a stray tear. “I’m proud of you. I’m proud of you for talking to your ex. I’m sure it was painful, but you did it. And maybe one day we can all go with you to see Jacob.”
“Yeah?” He whispers against the top of your head. “You’d do that?”
“Of course we would.” You pull away from him and lovingly pat his chest. “Now finish eating and go cuddle with A.J., it’ll help. Plus, Mama’s gotta make herself another sandwich.”
Andy finishes his lunch, wipes his hands, and walks off to go snuggle with his baby boy.
By the time you join them in the living room with your food, you find A.J. once again fast asleep atop your husband’s chest, both of them snoring softly.
Grabbing another blanket, you cover both of them up before kissing their foreheads.
Sweet dreams, my loves.

Picture not mine of course, I had it on my phone for some reason :)
                                     ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
Ever since Lily was born two months ago, she was a very calm baby. Of course she cried during the night if her diaper was dirty or if she was hungry, but as soon as the situation was handled she went back to sleep.  In general Andy and Annie actually were sleeping through the night except for this week. Lily got a little sick and had a small fever during the week. They took her to her doctor and they have been waking up during the night to check on her temperature and if she needed anything.
They were sleeping peacefully for the first time in a couple of days, when all of the sudden at 3 a.m. their baby woke them up with a very loud crying.
As soon as Annie heard her, she stood and half sleep walked to Lily’s room, her baby kicking her chubby legs and swinging her tiny arms, face full red, tears streaming down her rounded cheeks.
“Shhhh, baby,” she took her in her arms, “Mommy is here.” She went to take the digital thermometer and placed it in her small forehead. The small bip showed in the screen a good 98.7°, no fever.
She began to bounce her and swing her in her arms, but the crying didn’t stop in fact it increase.
“Shhhh, shhhh.” Lily’s crying was louder by the minute. Annie check on her diaper, she was clean. She tried to feed her but Lily wasn’t getting close to her nipple. “What’s wrong sweetie?”
In times like this Annie actually wished Lily could talk so she could tell her what was wrong. Annie kept bouncing her when she heard a thud followed by a soft fuck coming from the hall. Soon after a very sleepy Andy walked into the nursery, his hair a complete mess, one eye still closed.
“Does she have a fever again?”
“No, I already check. I don’t know what’s wrong with her.” Andy took her in his arms. “Her diaper is clean, she is not hungry. I don’t know what else to do. Lily tell momma what’s wrong?
“Honey, you’re tired. And babies can’t talk.” Andy placed her against his chest, her head on his shoulder, he began walking around the room, his large hand slapping slightly on her back, the crying stopped when a loud burp came out of the baby.
“Good job, princess.” Andy giggled at the sound of his baby girl burping. He bounced her a bit more before placing Lily in her crib, her eyes closing slowly after she yawned.
“I burped her before going to bed.”
“Hmmm maybe she didn’t let it all out. Come on, let’s go to bed.”
They walked to their room, each climbing on their side.
“I should know what’s wrong with my baby, right?”
“You always know what to do, honey.”
“No, I don’t; you just saw it! And you immediately knew what was happening.” Andy took her chin.
“Ok, first of all, momma, you’re doing great!” he gave her a small peck, “Second, I didn’t know what was wrong with her, I just had an idea and tried it. And last but not least, I have more experience than you.”
“Argh.” Annie said and crossed her arms.
“Wanna know something?” Annie nodded, “You are doing even better than I did when Jake was a baby.”
“You’re lying.”
“No, I once put his diaper the other way around.” Annie giggled, “And I almost gave him coffee once!”
“What? Why?”
“Well, I was tired, and Jake cried in the middle of the night, so I went to the kitchen to make him a bottle but instead of putting milk in it, I put my coffee inside.”
“When did you know it was coffee?”
“Right before coming back to his room, the bottle was cold and then I saw the dark liquid.” Annie began laughing, “I honestly don’t know how he survived to me!” he said in a mocking tone. “So believe me when I said you are a great mom.”
“I love you, baby.”
“I love you too,” He leaned in to kiss her, “Time to sleep, we need it and deserve it.”
Soon after both of them put their head on their pillows they fell asleep.
Annie turned to the side, her hand hitting against the cold mattress. Silence filled the house, the clock indicated 8:00, and Andy should be in the office by now. She stood up, took the baby monitor and walked to Lily’s room, the baby was still sleeping.
“Of course you’re still sleeping, you tired yourself out after you woke mommy and daddy last night.”  She shook her head and headed downstairs to the kitchen. She opened the fridge, took out the box of orange juice, serve herself a bit on a glass and sat on one of the stools in the counter. She sighed in contentment when a very sleepy Jake walked into the kitchen scratching his tushie.
“Jake?” The boy turned, rubbing his hand on his left eye, “Oh god; your dad left you here. Let me just,” She took her phone out of her purse, “I’ll called him.” Jake yawned.
Andy was driving back home, he could not believe what just happened to him, he was about to make it to the house when his phone began to rang.
“Hi, Honey, hey listen…”
“You forgot Jake! I’m calling the school, I’ll tell them he is sick or something.”
“What? No! Honey, let me explain.”
But Annie just hang off the phone. She then called the school, but no one was answering.
“Where’s dad?” Jake asked as he scratched his head.
“In the office.”
“On Sunday?”
“Yes, sweetie, you know he is… Sunday?”
“Sunday.” He yawned one more time, “Can I haf woffles?”
“I, yeah, yeah,” He heard the door opened, “I can make you some.”
Jake ran to the living room passing his dad who was wearing one of the many suits he had.
“It’s Sunday!” They both said when they saw each other, not believing they actually forgot what day it was. They began laughing.
“How did you know it was Sunday?” Andy asked.
“Just now, Jake asked why you were in the office if it was a Sunday. How did you know?”
“The coffee car outside the courtroom wasn’t there.” Annie let out a small oh, “and a police officer asked me what was a doing there on a Sunday.”
“Oh god!” she laughed, “What did you say to him?”
“Nothing! I ran!”
Annie laughed even harder when he heard the last part. “We are so stupid!”
“No, we’re exhausted. Next time I will check twice the fucking day on the phone before I leave.”
“Well, at least we know tomorrow it’s actually Monday.”
The baby monitor gave notice that Lily was waking up, they could heard her baby noises.
“I’ll get her.” Andy said. “I and that little lady will have a serious conversation as in why she shouldn’t wake us in the middle of the night on a weekend.”
“Don’t be so harsh on her.”
“I can’t promise anything.” He said in a serious tone just to wink at Annie before leaving the kitchen.
Annie began taking out everything to make breakfast when the baby monitor sounded again. “Alright missy, time to chat” a fainted babble was heard, “Oh you think is funny daddy went to work on a Sunday.” Annie smiled, they were exhausted, their hair had been a mess lately, the bags under their eyes where deep, but she wouldn’t chance this moment for anything in the world.

“I’ve got to go clean Mr. Hansen’s house, Jacob…but I promise I’ll be over as soon as I can,” you offered sweetly, keeping your arms wrapped around your boyfriend’s neck, “by the time I get done you’ll have everything unpacked and we can order pizza and cuddle up and watch Net-“
“You can’t even take one measly day away from that creep, can you?” he asked, “its not even your normal day.  But I bet he asked you to come over a day early just to ruin our time together.”
“Jacob…” you whimpered, “he did it because he knows tomorrow is my birthday and he wanted me to have the day off.”
“I’m serious,” he groaned, looking over to Mr. Hansen’s driveway, “you’re my girlfriend…you’re supposed to be seeing me off to college and we’re supposed to be making the most of it…you’re supposed to be making sure I’m not the third wheel between Ashley and Mr. Weiss, which is creepy enough as it is…but you’re going to go play French maid with Mr. Hansen?”
You frowned, “Mr. Hansen’s been nice to you and your dad, Jacob…he helped find out about your mom…and he’s been giving me the extra cash to clean his house practically since they moved in…”
“Which is weird, (Y/N).”
You went to argue but Jacob gave you a look, and your argument fizzled.  Instead, you looked at Ashley, who was flirtatiously loading boxes into Mr. Weiss’ truck.  They had taken the time earlier to load Jacob’s stuff in first and were now at Ashley’s house.  And you’d spent as much time as you possibly could helping, but if you waited any longer you knew you weren’t going to get out of his house until after dinner, and you didn’t want to risk running into Mrs. Hansen.
“I should go.”
“Yeah,” he huffed, his arms dropping from around your waist, “you should…I-I’ll call you to let you know when we’re done…I guess…”
“Yeah…”
“You okay, sweetheart?”
“I’m sorry, Mr. Hansen…what were you saying?”
“You’ve been moping around the house all afternoon,” he said with a soft look.  He leaned against the countertop that you had been mindlessly wiping down for the past five minutes and you frowned, realizing that you’d been thinking too much about the interactions with Jacob from earlier, “I told you that you didn’t have to come over this week…you could have helped Jacob move into his dorm with Mike and Ashley…and enjoyed your birthday tomorrow…I would have made it a week without you cleaning up the house.”
Your gaze retreated away from his cool one, for fear that he’d see that you really didn’t want to spend the additional time with Jacob.  But when his hand reached across the counter and his large, calloused hand stroked the back of yours, you nearly felt yourself breaking down.
“Do you need to talk to someone, sweetheart?”
“Ever since the beginning of the summer…well, prom…it just feels like Jacob, and I aren’t…connecting.”
“Did something happen at prom?” he asked, his voice turning stern.  You gave him a sad look, suddenly unsure about opening up to him, and you noticed his jaw clench, “did something happen to you, (Y/N)?”
“No…NO!” you said quickly, realizing the anger in his tone was turning into worry across his features, “n-nothing happened like that, Mr. Hansen…I just-I think Jacob expected it to…I-I want to save myself…for…”
You stopped, the blush spreading across your cheeks as you realized you were admitting that you didn’t want to have sex with Jacob to one of your father’s best friends.
“Hey…it’s okay,” he said in a soft voice, his warm hand stroking yours once again, “I want you to be able to feel like you can talk to me.  Just like you can talk to any one of us…Buck.  Mike.  Ari.  Even Andy…you’ve been there for each of them through some hard points in their lives.  And you’re a big help around my house…”
“Y-you don’t need to have me here, you know…I’m usually just tidying up,” you laughed, trying to change the subject, “you and Mrs. Hansen are extremely clean…I mean.  I usually just do the laundry and wipe everything down and vacuum and mop…there’s hardly ever any dishes, and-“
“I asked you originally because you seem to enjoy helping out the neighbors,” he shrugged, “you help Buck with his gardening…you walk Mike’s alligator…which I still can’t believe how tame that thing is-“
“Dad doesn’t like that I do that…but he’s a really sweet thing…”
“Mike needs to put that thing in a zoo before someone gets hurt…I’m surprised the HOA hasn’t fined him, or at the very least attempted to sue him to get it out of here,” he growled, glaring back towards the door, “sweethear-“
“I like the little guy,” you replied, cutting him off.  Truth be told, you had grown quite attached to Mr. Weiss’ weird choice of a pet, and it never once had lashed out in the five years you knew him to have it, “and the HOA tried…he out-lawyered them on that…he claims Beau is for his sobriety.”
Lloyd huffed as he looked at you, “you’re a bleeding heart, sweetheart…you really are.”
“I just want to be helpful…”
“You are,” he said softly in response.  You gave him a smile and he patted your hand, removing his own.  You felt slightly saddened by the loss and prayed that it didn’t show across your features.  He turned away, reaching into the cabinets before grabbing two glasses, “your dad called me a few minutes before I came in.  He’s got to run out for a last minute  s-“
“I know he’s getting my ‘you’re going to be a senior’ combined with my birthday gift, Mr. Hansen…”
He smiled, nodding along, “hey…I just told him that I’d keep you for dinner…you’re not allowed back in the house until seven…so that he has sufficient time to hide it…”
“Mr. Barnes and Mr. Levinson are probably helping him, aren’t they?”
“I was just in charge of the distraction,” he smiled, shooting you a wink.  Your heart fluttered as he turned towards the fridge, grabbing a two-liter of coke, “pizza is okay for dinner…right?”
“Are you ever going to learn how to cook, Mr. Hansen?” you teased.  He smiled again, sending the butterflies rushing around in your stomach.
“Not if I can help it,” he smirked, “Suzanne always told me not to worry about learning to cook when I did my government contracts…told me she’d rather order takeout.”
You frowned, “I’m sorry…”
“Don’t be,” he sighed.  He pulled out his phone and began a mobile order, already knowing what you liked, “but hey…speaking about the distance between you and that Barber boy…it’s probably for the best.  If he can’t respect your boundaries, then that’s a red flag for down the road…”
“We’ve been together since I was fourteen Mr. Hansen,” you shrugged, “I mean…it is the next logical step in our relationship…an-and I don’t want him to lose interest in me now that he’s going to be on a college campus…I-I mean…going to all those college parties.  College girls…I-“
“If he thinks of another girl, he’s not worth your time, sweetheart,” he replied, looking up from his phone after he placed the order, “now…I may be an old man in your eyes, but a man needs to know when to respect his significant other’s boundaries, and appreciate her…”
“Mr. Hansen…you’re not old.”
He chuckled, “old enough…look, (Y/N), I’m not saying you should listen to everything I say…I mean…I’m probably the last person you should take relationship advice from…but it’s food for thought.”
“Why do you say that, Mr. Hansen?”
“What?”
“Why should you be the last person I take relationship advice from?”
“It’s nothing,” he shrugged, “nothing you should concern yourself with at the very least…”
“I-if you want to talk, Mr. Hans-“
“I don’t, sweetheart,” he said firmly, cutting you off.  You nodded, instantly taking a step back from his sharp tone and he frowned, “I’m sorry…I just…It’s a delicate situation, sweetheart.  Suzanne and I-well, let’s just say that things aren’t easy between us.”
“I’m sorry…”
“Don’t be, (Y/N), it’s not your fault,” he said with a soft look, “none of it is your fault.”
Tumblr media
“You didn’t answer my call earlier…”
“I’m sorry,” you murmured, sighing to yourself, “I was still at Mr. Hansens…”
“(Y/N), I called at nine,” he grumbled angrily, “you were still there?  You left Ashley’s at nearly two.”
“Dad had me stay over at his place a little later than normal,” you said in your defense, “he was getting his traditional ‘you’ve made it another year’ combined with my birthday gift.”
Jacob huffed in defense.
“Why are you so defensive about it, Jacob?” you asked, “me cleaning Mr. Hansen’s house isn’t anything new!”
“It’s creepy,” he growled, agitation leaking through the line, “all of it.  You and Lloyd Hansen…he’s a married man…and he’s old.  And you’re my girlfriend.  God, if I didn’t trust you, I’d guess that you were probably fucking him, just like Ashley’s screwing Mr. Weiss.”
“Jacob!”
“I know,” he mocked, “you want to save yourself for marriage…but you have to see it from my eyes.  He’s creepy…and I know that he’s come onto you before.”
“What?” you asked, “you’re crazy if you think Mr. Hansen has ever come onto me.”
“Whatever…I’m not arguing with you about this, (Y/N).  I called because I wanted to talk to you, and here you are, starting another fight…it’s like you don’t want us to work out!”
“What?  Of course I do, Jacob.  I love you!”
“Sometimes I wonder if you really do,” he muttered.  You could hear some noise in the background before his angry tone returned, “I got to go…there’s some freshman mixer.”
And before you could respond, the line went dead, and you were left feeling alone and rejected by your own boyfriend.

The bakery was quiet for the first time since you opened today; the hustle and bustle of high school kids had dwindled down to zero, and you finally had time to make yourself the cup of coffee, you had craved since 4 in the morning. You did worry, though, because your favorite kid – the lanky, shy Jacob – had been nowhere to be seen, which was strange for him. He came in every day, a shy smile on his lips and asked (as the only one) for your walnut muffins, small talking about nothing really, while you bagged it up for him. It was steady and routine at this point:
You opened, began baking, and precisely thirty minutes before the bell rang, Jacob would show up, buy a walnut muffin, eat it inside while talking about schoolwork or his dad – or how much he hated his mom – and then wave goodbye. You liked it. He was a smart and funny kid, and your general penchant for being a MomTM, made it easy to talk to him and dote on him.
He seemed like he needed it.
Which is why you were worriedly looking out of the window towards the school with furrowed brows, when the bell rang, and Jacob still hadn’t shown up. Not that he wasn’t allowed to not show up, but it gave you a sense of unease. He had been through enough, already. You began baking another round of croissants, flour going everywhere, and you grumbled to yourself that this was not the day for wearing black boots, because they were slowly turning grey. Occupational hazard.
You were so concentrated, that you missed the bell chiming and the sound of shuffling feet, until a soft voice called out. “Hey, Y/N.” Your head whipped up to see Jacob stand in front of you. Your smile fell when you saw the busted lip and the blood flowing freely. “Sorry, I didn’t come in earlier.” “Don’t think about that, what happened to you?” you rushed to his side and sat him down in one of the chairs, quickly going to the open sign and flipping it. “Asshole at school.” He said with a shrug. “Isn’t the first time, won’t be the last.” You were seething. “Jake, you… Hang on, I’ll get you something to clean off with.” You rushed to the back, found a hand towel and wet it, handing it to him as soon as you came back and sat down in front of him. “Thanks.” “Jake, listen to me. Who was he, why did he do that, and do I need to kill him?” You asked seriously. He shook his head. “It’s the dickhead Spencer. He’s… Well, yeah. He’s that. I guess I sat in his chair. Or he thinks I’m gay. It could all of the things.” You pursed your lips. You might only be 25 years old, and you may have only known Jacob for six months, but you felt protective of him. “Call your dad. When’s the break?” He glanced at the clock. “In… Like two minutes.” He scrolled on his phone, stopping with a finger hovering over the call-button. “Why?” “I’m about to beat this bitch up.” You said firmly, dusting your fingers from flour. “You’re coming with me, point him out.” He called his dad as he stood up. “Uh, dad? So… I might get in trouble. Not like, that kind of trouble again, but like… Normal teen trouble? At school? You should get over here. Like…” He looked at you and swallowed. “I’m a little scared of Y/N. She’s about to rip a kid a new one for punching me. Anyway, bye!” he hung up. “Voicemail.”
You stalked to the school parking lot, hair whipping around your face in the wind, Jacob trailing after you, and he nodded to a red-headed, slightly plump kid, who was laughing with a group of other boys. You were ready to throw some fucking hands.
“YOU!” You marched over to him, while Jacob stood back, watching it unfold. “Who the hell do you think you are?” you began, the kid stumbling back a few paces and the verbal smack-down began.
-----------
Andy hated voicemails like that. He hated that his first thought was not again, and he drove faster than he probably should’ve to reach the school in record time. When he pulled over, he saw Jacob standing, eyes locked on a woman, who was clearly angrily gesturing and speaking loudly to the asshole of a kid, Spencer, who looked like he was about to cry. Andy got out of the car quickly and almost jogged to Jacob’s side, clocking the busted lip. “What the hell happened to you?” He asked, taking Jacob’s face in his hands. “I’m fine dad, seriously.” He glanced at the woman again. “I don’t think I have anything to worry about, because Y/N seems to be doing a great job telling him off.” He pointed to her, and Andy frowned. “Wait, that’s Y/N?” “Yeah.” “I thought she was in your year!” He said, watching her poke Spencer in the chest with a finger. “Nah, she’s like… 25, but super cool. She plays DND and stuff. She’s like my mom friend.” “She’s a mom?” Andy could almost hear Jacob roll his eyes. “No, dad, a mom friend.” “Kid, I have no idea what that means.”
“If you ever even look at him again, I’ll wreck you faster than you can scream mommy.” Andy overheard the last of the conversation – or yelling – from Y/N, before she turned on her heels and walked straight to Jacob, cupping his face in her hands. The gesture made Andy’s stomach go into knots. “Listen to me, you’re getting free muffins for the rest of the year from even tolerating being in the same room as that fucking wombat.” You said, wiping your thumb across Jacob’s cheek. Andy was reeling. He watched Spencer run inside of the school and didn’t see her turn to him. “You’re Mr. Barber, I presume.” He was about to answer when he finally looked at her.
She was beautiful. He knew beauty when he saw it. Her hair was flowing around her face, her eyes were burning into him, and her lips, fucking hell, her lips made him feel dizzy. She radiated confidence. She was wearing a blue sundress, covered largely by a black apron that in turn, was covered in flour, and he had never in his life felt this attracted to a person before. He swallowed thickly when he noticed the tattoos littering her arms, and the one, that poked out from her collarbone to her shoulder, only interrupted by the strap of her dress made his heart thump heavily in his chest. “Barber, yes. I.. Am Andy.” He swallowed thickly and noticed Jacob grin like a Cheshire cat. “Well, Barber, Andy, prepare yourself to go to the principal’s office.” “Why, did you punch the kid?” He asked, honestly a little worried. She looked terrifying, despite her smaller stature and flour in her hair. She shook her head. “No, but I did accidentally say nobody messes with my kid and called the kid an asshole, that was tired of shitting, and that if he ever tried to touch my kid again, I’d rip his arms from his body and stuff them up his ass.” She turned her head to see the very angry face of the vice-principal. “Shit.” “Will you follow me, Mr. Barber, Miss?” She told him through tight lips. Y/N followed as well, clearly ready to face whatever wrath a principal had to dish out. Andy couldn’t stop looking at her, her entire aura was just confidence and care; he cleared his throat several times to get rid of the damned dry spot, that suddenly appeared at the same time as Y/N had cupped Jacob’s cheeks.
They both stepped into the office, and when she stood next to him, Andy realized just how short she was in comparison to him. He easily towered a head above her. “I don’t appreciate siblings telling students off, Mr. Barber.” He cocked an eyebrow at the principal. “Siblings?” he asked, slightly confused. The principal pointed at Y/N, who laughed. “Oh, no, I’m not related.” She winked at Andy. “Yet.” He spluttered. She turned back to the principal. “And someone has to tell them off, or nobody will. Seriously, do you not a have a zero-bullying policy in this hellhole?” Andy snickered under his breath.   “Miss, that’s very inappropriate…” “No, I’ll tell you what’s inappropriate.” Y/N cut the principal off. “That someone can punch another human being and face zero repercussions. Zero bullying, my ass, you’re literally enforcing the bullying by not acting. I have no respect for you or anything you have to say to me, as long as you allow that to happen in your school, Mrs.” Andy cleared his throat, when the principal opened her mouth to retort. “I agree. My son has done nothing” (well, he hoped) “to warrant this. Y/N did nothing more than stand up for my son, which is needed since the school decided not to.” “Mr. Barber, I can assure you…” “You can assure me of nothing.” He said with a smile. It was the same smile he wore when he delivered his final statements in court. “I refuse to be called in here for my son, when he’s the one bleeding. Have a wonderful day, Mrs. Stevensen.” He turned on his heel and gestured for Y/N to follow him, leaving the principal absolutely dumbfounded.
“Am I in trouble?” Jacob asked in the second, they stepped outside. Andy shook his head and wrapped his arm around Jacob, pulling him close. “No, kiddo, you’re not.” “Tell you what, I’ll get you a few muffins to take back, okay?” Y/N said. “Come, I was going to close early anyway.” Jacob practically jumped out of Andy’s arms and ran after Y/N, talking animatedly with his hands as they walked. Andy furrowed his brows; he hadn’t seen Jacob like this in a while, and it warmed his heart a little. He quickly followed them into the bakery, and was immediately feeling comfortable – it smelled of chocolate and fresh bread, while the walls were covered in personal art (he noticed a few drawings from Jacob hung on the wall as well), and he sat down in the chair, that Jacob pointed him to.
“Jake, what will it be today? Walnut muffins, chocolate chip cookies, something dangerous or something unexpected?” She asked seriously. “I’ll cry if you give me anything with chili in it.” He answered with a grin. You rolled your eyes and laughed. “I might be scary, but I’m not evil.” You winked at Andy, who almost choked on thin air. “Unexpected it is, huh?” You kept your eyes on Andy as you spoke, and he couldn’t help the small grin spread on his lips. “Yeah, unexpected is good.” Jacob answered, looking back and forth between Y/N and Andy, his eyes glowing with something Andy hadn’t seen in his son for a while: Hope.

A Challenge For Us All (defending jacob/andy barber x daughter!reader)
Summary: No part of life following Jacob’s accusation has been easy, but when  y/n experiences a heartbreak, Andy and Jacob are by her side.
Warnings: a breakup, fighting/arguing, mentions of murder
Requested: No, one I’ve pulled from my Google Docs
A/N: y/n obvi = your name, y/n/n = your nickname, y/m/n = your middle name, there used to be an OC’s name in here, forgive me if I miss any
The evening sun was finally beginning to set. The stadium was still alive with the hoots and cheers of Newton fans, proud and giddy over a win at the first football game of the year. It was hot, since it was still August. Y/n tried to do all she could to soak it in. It was her first and last football game until after her brother’s trial - an event that had been looming all summer and was now upon them, just a few days away. It could be her last football game ever. If, God forbid, her brother were to be found guilty, she’d lose cheerleading forever. As heartbreaking as that would be, she didn’t care. She’d give up cheerleading any day if it meant keeping her baby brother safe. At least her coach had fought with the athletic director, principal, and parents of other cheerleaders, to let her stay on the squad this long.
Y/n slung her glittery royal blue cheer backpack over her shoulder and made for the boy’s locker rooms. She waited outside as players began to drift out. They were all damp - some from showers, some still from sweat. Finally, Ty emerged. Ty, her boyfriend, the one person who didn’t look at y/n with suspicion or pity. She waved timidly.
He walked over to her, unsure of where to start, how to begin. How do you tell the girl you love so much that you can’t be with her anymore? Ty knew his words, no matter how gentle, were going to destroy her.
“Hey,” Y/n said. Right about now was when Ty would normally slip his arm around her waist and lean in for a short kiss. He was alluring and mature like that, which Y/n liked. She couldn’t stand those couples that were all over each other in public, especially at school. When Ty didn’t go in for his usual greeting, worry immediately washed over Y/n’s face, though her smile attempted to mask it.
“Is everything okay?” Y/n asked after a moment of silence.
“No. Uh, y/n, listen…” Spit it out, you jerk, Ty thought. “My parents don’t want us to be together anymore.” The words struck Y/n like she’d just waltzed into an iron pole. Her stomach lurched and her blood seemed to thin. She knew her face was turning bright red as tears gathered in her chest and made their way to her eyes. She pursed her lips, trying to abate the tears for as long as possible. Not here, not now, she told herself. Not in front of all these people, though no one seemed to be paying any attention to them.
“Why would you tell me that, right here, right now?” she choked. Her tears were now brimming, unable to be restrained.
“I’m so sorry, Y/n, I-” Ty began, but she cut him off.
“No,” she commanded. “You’re just doing what you have to do, to protect yourself, right?” Tears began to spill. Her tone told Ty that the words, however true, were like poison coming from her mouth. That was exactly what his parents had said. They assumed everything about Ty’s future would be on the line if he continued to fraternize with the older sister of the accused murderer, though Ty’s parents pointedly left off the word “accused”.
“Y/n I-”
“It’s fine,” she shrugged, putting on a show of manufactured cheeriness, her red eyes and tears the only evidence of the sadness behind her anger. “I get it, really. I’ll leave you alone. Wouldn’t want anyone to get suspicious.”
“Of what?” Ty asks, turning to watch her walk away. She turns but keeps walking backwards.
“Exactly.”
There’s an awkward silence during the car ride home. Emma managed to wipe the last of her tears (for now, anyway) before getting in Andy’s Audi. She knew her eyes were probably red and her nose was stuffed up, but she figured appearing calm would at least let her get safely away from the football stadium, maybe even up to her bedroom to be alone.
If only she were that lucky. Her dad had barely put the car in park before speaking.
“Go change and then come downstairs, please.” She nodded and went inside, her father not far behind her. Her mother noticed right away. She always noticed; you couldn’t hide the tell-tale signs of crying from Laurie Barber. She’d had too much experience dealing with crying, upset children. Y/n said nothing as she walked by so fast Laurie barely had time to decide what to say to her. Laurie looked at Andy as he shut the door behind him. They communicated in only looks, hers saying What the heck is going on? and his saying Don’t question it yet, I’ve got it.
“I told her to go change and come right back down,” Andy said. He gripped the edge of the counter and Laurie set down her mug of tea to busy herself with making her daughter a cup. The tea bag is still steeping when Y/n comes down the stairs, her hair still up but now sans hairbow. She wore a soft, slouchy tee shirt and a pair of running shorts.
“Sit down, honey,” Andy told his daughter, though the girl standing in front of him was nothing like the Y/N Y/M/N Barber he’d known a year ago. Y/n sat on the kitchen bar chair closest to her parents.
“What happened?” he asked. Y/n licked her lips and trained her eyes on the ground. Tears began to well in her eyes again. She wasn’t just angry and upset. She was scared; scared to tell her parents that another person was gone from their lives as a result of Jacob’s accusation. It would rip them apart. They were already so distraught that Jacob couldn’t go to school or play baseball. They didn’t need this on their plates as well.
“Is it something with cheerleading?” Laurie asked. Y/n shook her head.
“A friend? Did someone say or do something?” Andy added. Y/n sat still.
“Y/n, we can’t-”
“Ty broke up with me.” Y/n’s words rushed out, desperate to stop her father from the “we can’t help if we don’t know” speech.
“What? Why? What did he say?” Laurie interrogated.
“He, he said he just didn’t want to be in a relationship anymore.” Y/n shrugged.
“You’re lying,” Andy stated matter-of-factly.
“Andy!”
“No, she’s lying. I’m an attorney, y/n/n. Did you think you could get a lie past me?” Andy sympathetically reaches his hand out and rests it on her cheek, his thumb rubbing back and forth soothingly. Y/n’s whole body becomes racked with sobs, unable to hide her pure anguish any longer. Ty hadn’t just been a boyfriend. He’d been her best friend. She took a risk dating him. She knew if things didn’t end well, she’d lose a boyfriend and her best friend. She had no idea it could ever come crashing down like this.
Andy envelops her, pulling her into his chest. He wanted nothing more than to be able to hold her until the pain stopped, until she could be her old self again. Andy feared she would never be her old self ever again.
“Ty did break up with you, but that wasn’t his reason, was it?” Y/n shook her head.
“Was it because of me?” Andy let go of Y/n so she could turn her head toward the source of the question. Jacob stood on the bottom step. Y/n tried to sit up straighter, look more brave than she felt. She took being the big, brave older sister very seriously.
“It’s not your fault, Jake. You didn’t do anything wrong. People are just…”
“So it was because of me.”
“Jake, don’t-” Y/n began, cut off by the pounding of Jacob’s feet on the stairs, retreating back to his room. She slid off the chair and raced after him. She couldn’t let him blame himself for her failed relationship.
“Jake! Y/n!” Andy called.
“Let them work it out for a few minutes.” Andy took a deep breath and stayed where he was.
Y/n hadn’t caught up with Jacob before he slammed his bedroom door shut. He hadn’t locked it, so she let herself inside and locked the door behind her. She didn’t want her parents right now and she knew Jake didn’t either. Jacob sat on his bed. Jacob never made noise when he cried. Tears just spilled, like they were right then. Y/n sat next to him.
“Jake. Please. This is not your fault.” Y/n pleaded.
“Yes, it is. If I had just-”
“Just what?” Y/n asked. “Not tried to see if your classmate was okay? Not gotten into arguments with him when he was a jerk to you? You had no idea any of this would- could, even happen. So stop blaming yourself.” The siblings looked in one another’s eyes.
“It’s gonna be okay, Jake.”
“How can you be sure?”
“I can’t. All I can promise is that I’m by your side no matter what.” Y/n took her brother's hand and interlaced their fingers. It had been a long time since they’d been so affectionate with one another. As little kids they were always hugging and kissing, but that had worn off years ago. With nothing much else left to say, they sat in silence for a few minutes. Their breaths evened out, their shudders and sniffles quieting. A few more minutes passed. Y/n stood and unlocked the door, waving for Jacob to follow her. She hadn’t eaten dinner, after all, and now that her grief was somewhat subdued, hunger was setting in. Andy and Laurie were both surprised and relieved when their children came down the stairs, seemingly happy. It seemed it would be the last time they would see them like that for days.

'Y'know he's not my cat, right?' ;
Coach Fury had to cancel practice one particular Thursday — he was called to a last-minute meeting between sports coaches of the school whereas you had students in need of help for the upcoming literature tests. So, Jacob decided to walk home with AJ and Cass.
Though, judging by the dark clouds, maybe they should've waited on the school grounds and called Uncle Sam for a ride. Still, they were halfway through, so they could only hope for the best.
But they weren't expecting to meet someone along the way.
"Hey, look," Cass pointed out, "It's Beemo!"
Jacob raised his eyebrows — Beemo?
Meow.
Oh.
"You guys never told me you had a cat?" Jacob watched as the tabby approach the younger Wilson from the bushes.
"Oh no, Uncle Sam would never," Cass continued to stroke Beemo's head, emitting a purr out of the feline, "This is (Y/N)’s," Jacob blinked owlishly, partially because he has yet to get used to the brothers calling you by your first name outside the school premise but more so to the cat. Thankfully, AJ explained further.
"We've been using the same route home so we kinda took him as her cat," He shrugged, "She told us from time to time that Beemo's a stray, but we usually see him hanging out in her front yard, so…"
Jacob nodded, returning the look of curiousity that Beemo was giving him. He, like his father, wasn't exactly a cat person. Not that they hated them but they were more drawn to dogs. One may think it's because of the whole 'dogs are friendly, cats are evil' statement but he never believed in that generalization in the first place. He just… never had an opinion on them, that's all.
"Can I?" The brothers immediately understood as soon as Jacob held his hand out, "Hey," Thanks to those tens of cat videos he's watched on a random day in one seating, he allowed Beemo to sniff him before nuzzling his head against his hand.
"He likes you," AJ smiled, "Normally, he just runs away or hides from new people,"
‘Like’ was suddenly an understatement — Who knew Beemo would be so keen on Jacob that he'd be the one holding him not long after. AJ had to show him how to properly hold the cat but all in all, Beemo seemed pretty comfortable.
“We should drop him off at her place,” It was a thing for them or even the Maximoff brothers to bring Beemo to your house, “Wanna tag along?”
Jacob didn’t have anything to lose. If anything, he just gets more time with his new friend. His father was only coming home in a few hours so, why not?
Little did he know today just so happened to be one of Andy's slower days, allowing him to leave the office earlier than the usual hour. It wasn't long till he spotted his son with two somewhat familiar faces. He slowed his car before eventually stopping next to the three.
"Jake?" He had his window rolled down, eyes immediately zoned in on the cat in his son's arms but continued to ask, "You're heading home, too?"
"Hey dad, yeah, training's cancelled today," Jacob explained before motioning to the two behind him, "Dad, you know AJ and Cass,"
"Nice to see you guys again," He smiled, nodding to them as they waved in return, "And uh, that cat you got there?"
"This is Beemo, they said he's Ms (L/N)'s cat," Oh? "We were just on our way to drop him off at her place since it's gonna—"
As if on cue, the groans of thunder did the answering for him.
"Rain," Jacob added, smiling sheepishly at his father. He saw the way he contemplated for a moment.
"C'mon, I'll send you boys home," Andy took notice of the brothers’ side-glancing at the cat and sighed in defeat. He wasn't going to be heartless, "We can drop him off, too," The boys seemingly perked up, "But, you boys gotta help me navigate,"
Absolutely asking for the sake of the cat.
"Thanks, Mr Barber!" He waved off their gratitude and unlocked the doors. AJ and Cass took the backseat whereas Jacob rode shotgun, letting Beemo rest on his lap. In any other circumstances, Andy would've warned him about being too comfortable with a stray, let alone holding one in his car.
Then again, petting a cat should be the least of his worries.
Plus, Beemo wasn't even a stray; they did say he was yours.
"So… Ms (L/N)'s cat?" He glanced at the rearview mirror, particularly at the older Wilson.
"Not really," Andy raised an eyebrow, "It's not her cat, but he prefers her company the most,"
Huh.
Well, alright. Couldn't blame the lil' fella.
Tumblr media
Days had passed since the Barber's introduction to the tabby and when there were good days, there were bad ones too.
Today was no exception.
Andy didn't even try to hide his frustration towards the end of his shift, which sadly lasted till midnight. He was as gloomy as this particular weekend's weather forecast; a full-on downpour with the chances of a thunderstorm. The only saving grace he had was a message from Jacob telling him to drive safe' in the middle of his drive.
Though, he didn't feel like going home just yet. He felt the need to unwind somewhere else, preferably outdoors. Fortunately, his prayers were answered.
He was driving in complete silence, not bothering to turn the radio on when he spotted a ball of fluff chilling on one of the sidewalk benches.
Beemo?
He had no idea what compelled him to stop the car by the park entrance. He looked around, making sure nobody was nearby before exiting his vehicle and walk over to the cat in question.
"Hey... you..." He tried not to spook the feline by sitting on the other end of the bench.
‘This is stupid,’
Talking to an animal but that was likely because he hasn't done that in a long time. He never found the need to, plus, he was never a pet person in general. Well, other than dogs, "Shouldn't you be at home with your master?"
Beemo tilted his head but never moved from his spot. Andy, too, remained silent, unsure if he should keep talking to somehow ease his mind or leave the cat alone.
He exhaled through his nose and leaned back against the bench. He looked up at the night sky. The dark clouds were accumulating but he could see some stars twinkling ever so often.
"I hope she's having a good day," He snorted humourlessly, "I sure as hell didn't,"
Paperwork after paperwork was one thing, and then dealing with some people was another.
Meow.
He jolted at the sudden nudge on his arm, only to relax at vibrations coming from Beemo's purring. He chuckled, allowing the feline to nuzzle into him.
"You're not a bad company yourself," Upon realizing that someone could've passed by him casually chatting with a cat, he shook his head in disbelief.
‘I’m really losing it today,’
That, or Beemo's big, round eyes were sending him into a trance.
But, a tranquil kind, that is.
"C'mon, let's get you home," He tried to pick the cat up, only to stop in his tracks when Beemo backed away in fear, "Okay, okay, sorry,"
At first, he wasn’t sure how to approach this, not until he remembered that one cat video he accidentally clicked on before watching it till the very end. So, he let Beemo sniff his hand first and just like with Jacob, Beemo immediately melted into his touch, allowing the man to pick him up.
"Alright, c'mon," He wasn’t going to leave him be, and the cat seemed trained enough not to piss in his car.
But, he knew damn well just needed an excuse to see you.
Tumblr media
The idea of marking your students' homework was long abandoned. Instead, you've been pacing back and forth in the living room, considering how Beemo has yet to make his appearance at your doorstep. It didn't help that you've just seen the weather forecast; heavy rain was expected from 2 a.m. onwards and you were this close to searching for him around the perimeter.
Suddenly, the sound of someone knocking at your front door had you frozen in your spot.
'At this hour?' Your heart was already beating fast at the idea of Beemo out in the rain, so, the thought of literally anyone behind that door didn't help at all. It was only reasonable for you to reach for the baseball bat from under the couch.
Hey, you were pretty alone in here.
Beemo couldn't save you.
You tiptoed to the very end of the window closest to the door, moving the curtain just by an inch to take a peek.
If you weren't close to having a heart attack before, well, you definitely were now.
Why was Andy Barber at your doorstep and why was he holding Beemo?!
You couldn't stop yourself when you choked on your own spit, though you were lucky enough to refrain from coughing loudly. Just then, you looked around for your phone, hoping to at least tidy up your hair or pick off any loose ends of your shirt first.
"Just a sec!" You called out. Looking presentable as you could, minus the oversized shirt and boy shorts, you threw the phone somewhere on the couch before scrambling to the door.
In midst of it all, you tried to ignore the shameful thoughts nagging at the back of your head; the hopes of Andy checking you out.
You opened the door slightly, peeking out of the small gap and pretended to look surprised.
"Andy?" Your attention went from his to the, well, your cat, "Beemo?!"
Okay, well, maybe you were a little surprised but at this point, you had a feeling that the Wilson's had something to do with this.
"Hey, uh, hope I'm not bothering you or anything,"
Oh, you could never, Mr Barber.
You thought he heard your thoughts, judging by the bewildered look on his face, only to realize that you were still holding the baseball bat.
"Uhh…" You hid the weapon behind your back, "I… don't get late night visits often,"
Your palms were getting sweaty, even more so when he chuckled lowly.
"A 'Hello Kitty' bat, though?"
"I…" You resorted to looking down, missing the way his eyes darkened when you bit your bottom lip and noticed the sleepwear you were wearing, "I liked it 'cause it was pink…"
At least he found some entertainment out of your embarrassment but thankfully, he decided to spare you the teasing.
"Well, speaking of cats," He motioned to Beemo who he held in those muscular arms of his, "Found him on my way home,"
You had placed the bat elsewhere by now before taking Beemo into your arms, who immediately snuggled up in your chest, the shirt you wore was what he most familiar with.
"Let me guess; Sam told you about him,"
"Close. I was heading home the other way when I saw Jake holding him with AJ and Cass. Told me you were pretty much the owner so…" He trailed off, cocking his head as if to say 'you know what I mean'.
"The Wilson's," You deadpanned — of course. If it weren't them, then your next guess would've been the Maximoff's, "Y'know he's not my cat, right?" The way Beemo nuzzled against your cheek had you scrunching up your nose.
“I know,” So he’s been told, “Couldn’t just drive past the lil’ guy. You’ve read about the weather soon, right?"
"I did," You sighed, though, you were glad enough that the thunderstorm wasn't going to hit on a school day, "I can't thank you enough. I don't think I could sleep, knowing he could be out there, all wet and cold,"
"S'not a problem," He pushed down the feeling of pride for a moment, "Though, I'll admit; I was never a cat person,"
"Oh? What changed?" You subconsciously nuzzled against Beemo's soft fur.
You.
"Jake likes his company," If Andy noticed the subtle disappointment in your face, then he never showed nor mentioned it.
You could only hope he didn't.
"Well, Beemo has been keeping lonely ol' me company," You weren't a fan of being alone for too long, which is why you were thankful to know people who looked at you more than a teacher.
Yes, including and especially the Wilson's.
"Hey," Your stomach flipped, not only by the softness in his tone but the way he looked at you in general, "Tell me if I'm being inappropriate, you know, between a parent and a teacher and all but, as a friend, I'm all ears,"
You were taken aback by his offer; you may or may not have heard about how intimidating he was in his office.
'A hard-headed father starting anew in this little neighbourhood with his son', they said.
Many were curious but none were brave enough to ask.
Yet, here he was.
You shouldn't be surprised since the very day you two met, he's been nothing but gentle with you.
"I couldn't subject you to that," You wanted to decline partially because he likely had more issues to deal with than you, but more that you wouldn't grow too attached to him.
Then again, maybe it was too late to say no.
"But, I do appreciate the thought," Being friends was better than nothing, "I can't be spending all my time with just Sam and Sarah, I suppose,"
"Believe me, I can only handle Sam's company so much," Andy groaned before taking something out of his pocket; a card and a pen, "In case you need a call, for whatever reason, you’ll have both my business number and personal number,”
Andrew Barber
Assistant District Attorney
xxx
You were more drawn to the number he just scribbled below, though.
Hell, you'd be lying if you said you weren't honoured of receiving his personal number, but pushing the giddiness aside, you were also extremely touched.
"Sooo… I can either call you for a chat or for help if Beemo goes missing?" He snorted — well, anything to help you out, right?
"Definitely. Let's just hope this guy doesn't do that too often before we even talk on the phone," As much as he'd like to stay longer, he wasn't too keen on the idea of someone in the neighbourhood taking this particular scene the wrong way and slander not only his name but yours as well, to the world. That, and you both could hear the thunder roaring.
"You should get going," You urged, "Wouldn't want Jacob in the house alone when the raining comes,"
"Yeah," He was already on the move but not before saying his goodbye, "Take care, alright?"
"I will!" You were very close to bouncing off the walls, "You and Jacob take care as well!"
He gave you a thumbs-up before rushing to his car.
As soon as you closed the door, your self-control finally broke.
"Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh!" You were gushing to no end, not entirely since Beemo was still catching some z’s in your arms. So, you gently placed him on the couch before taking a pillow to scream into.
Not only was your cat-but-not-really safe and sound, but you also had his phone number!
You couldn’t sleep a wink that night, and you didn’t mind it one bit.
Tumblr media
Just like you and Andy, Jacob had earned himself a newfound friendship.
The moment they realized how much they enjoyed each other’s company happened one fine day. Jacob had finished his homework, and as one thing led to another, he started a random video game to kill the time. Just as he was about to, though, he jolted at the silhouette coming from his window.
"Oh shit," He clutched his chest where he felt his heart beating rapidly before taking in the newcomer’s appearance, "Beemo?"
The feline trills at his greeting, pawing the window to be let in.
“I can’t let dad see you, so,” He walked over to his door, closing it before letting the cat roam around his room.
Satisfied, Jacob sat on the floor, resting against the side of the back and waited for the game to load. At first, he had to stop Beemo from licking his hair from time to time. Then, for whatever reason, he just… allowed Beemo to do his thing.
Soon enough, these two were inseparable. Even if Jacob thought he had hidden the feline’s visits well, limiting them to his bedroom, Andy knew better.
Why else would he have found sachets of cat food in the trash?
So long he wasn’t making a mess around the house, Andy’s not entirely concerned.
Plus, it was only fair since Beemo didn’t mind his presence, so that was just a green light to get closer to you.

tw/cw: mention of OCD, blood, and sex.
-loves being kissed. literally anywhere. back? yes pls. chest? obviously. neck? do i need to beg? arms? pls. legs? yes. feet? no what the hell. face? yes. head? duh.
-his love language is quality time fs. as long as he’s hanging out with you—he’s happy.
-he prefers prime numbers. why? we dont know.
-has bandaids on his fingers and hands that are usually hello kitty or something child-like because you patch him up.
-you offen buy matching gemstone bracelets. he always wears them unless he’s playing drums so he doesn’t break them. he has 6 of them so far, so he wears 3 on each hand. you did the same.
-he’s gotten good at pulling his puppy dog eyes at you, meaning it always works.
-bisexual but has no idea
-hunter hated you at first but now you two are platonic besties that gossip like crazy
-when a sex scene comes on he pretends he’s suddenly interested in the feeling of the couch or the way the carpet looks because they make him uncomfortable 😭
-switch. need i say more?
-sleeps with socks on (real)
-you sit in his lap usually but you love teasing him, especially in front of friends and you’re able to get him to sit on your lap.
-he draws a lot of his mental issues out on paper in a way that’s very abstract. most of them are about his undiagnosed OCD and how he sometimes feels trapped since he cant put what hes feeling into words. its especially harder because he doesnt know why he feels these things, so he assumes its normal. you asked him about it once and he shrugged and said that it was just a “relatable drawing.” you were a concerned because it did not seem very relatable but instead quite dark. the drawing was a picture of a sidewalk drawn in graphite, he drew the lines in the sidewalk as holes in the ground that had knives coming out of them. he had a shoe that avoided it but had black liquid coming out from the bottom of it that was clearly meant to be depicted as blood. the shoe had a fish-like net around it that was attached to the part of the leg you could see. numbers were written all over the curb, “12345” that was repeated until it convered the entire curb. you only recognized that because he often repeated the numbers quite randomly.

Well I was thinking
In an AU version of your Andy stories..Assuming Jacob was still alive..How will Andy tell him about Reader?
or maybe Jacob is the one who makes him realise that he is in love like Andy is rambling nonsense about random things just out of nervousness and Jacob is like-“Dad..you are in love!!”
Well only if you are ok ..
Ps-I love your writings..You are amazing🤩
It had all started when Jacob had said tell me more about your friend, Dad.
"And do you know," Andy tells Jacob while they both sit in the food court at the local mall. "She brought me these lemon bars the other day, and son, they were delicious. I should've saved some for you. Sorry about that."
"It's alright, Dad." Jacob mumbles. "I'll live. What else is your friend like?"
"Well, she loves horror movies, which I don't get. But I've sat through a few of them. They're not so bad." He grumbles.
"Have you made her watch Rambo with you yet?" The boy sips his soda.
"I did."
"And she stayed? Like, she didn't leave?" He dips a fry into some ketchup.
"No." She had just laughed at parts that she found funny.
"She loves to cook, and boy is she good! She really enjoys it. In fact she wants me to help her in the kitchen!"
Jacob blanches at. "Dad, I'm sorry, but you can't cook. It's bad when you try. You could burn water."
"I know. But she makes me believe in myself."
"Well, that's good." The teen responds with a shrug.
"And she's always dancing." Andy says, his eyes glazing over. "Like always. And singing. She can't sing worth anything but that doesn't stop her. Do you know she introduced me to Beyonce?"
"She introduced - you didn't know about her before now?" Jacob's face is in his hands.
"I mean I did, but not to the extent that Y/N knows her!"
"Oh, and to the Megan who rides a stallion."
"Please stop, Dad. This hurts so bad."
"And she likes to dance in the rain." Andy continues.
"Dad, stop." Jacob rests a hand on his shoulder. "You like her, man. I'm just being real here. I think you might even love her."
"What?" Says an incredulous Andrew Barber. "There's no way I -"
"Dad, you haven't shut up about her. I'd like to meet her at some point. Not right now, but at some point. But you love her. Now, I've got to go to the bathroom."
Andy watches his son walk away, pondering over his words.
Did he...did he love her?
