🎉Happy New Year from the Cromwells!!🎉

My dear mum and I -- who just finished purchasing and moving into a new home together and are very happy with the new arrangement -- recently rewatched one of our old favorites, Studio Ghibli's My Neighbor Totoro (specifically the original Fox English dub, which I still have on VHS), and afterwards, I just had to draw some content for preteen!Jacob and wittle!Carewyn. (For more of these two's dynamic in this age range, you can read this drabble, if you want!) And with how very cold it's been the last few weeks, I figured these two and their mum Lane needed some warm winter clothes!!

So yes, this is Lane with Jacob newly age 11 and Carewyn age 2 1/2, the winter before Jacob received his Hogwarts letter. This would explain why Jacob's hair is so much shorter, Carewyn actually has enough hair to wear in pigtails, and all three of these dears have such well-fitting and matching clothes -- after family patriarch Evan Bach's departure, Jacob started growing his hair out once he started at Hogwarts, Carewyn had to cut her hair because the kids in her new school started pulling on the braid her mum would tie her hair into, and the Cromwell family's funds shrank considerably with Lane as sole breadwinner. Lane is also (as always) so unbelievably proud of her son and how good of a big brother he is, as well as so beyond happy seeing just how close Carewyn and Jacob are and how much they both clearly adore each other. It's so much easier for poor socially-anxious Lane to brave going out in public around other people when she can watch her wee bairns having such sweet, innocent fun. And it makes Carewyn and Jacob all the happier, being able to spend some quality time on a walk with their mother. 💜

Anyways, meet the Runaway Candidate...

𝐉𝐚𝐜𝐨𝐛 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐭 𝐀𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲

Jacob Bennett Avery is the first son of Bruce and Mabel Avery. He was born as the candidate for being the next King of Diamonds. As Jacob Bennett grew up, he spent all his time being under Bruce's care. Bruce would often force him to study both etiquette, self defense and academics, any things that's needed for a King. Jacob Bennett would sometimes sneak out of his study room to hangout with his younger siblings. He is very fascinated in treasure hunting as he always reads books related to it as a form of coping mechanism.

When the day of his coming of age almost arrived, Jacob Bennett planned his escape and prepared the things he needed for his freedom. He also wrote a letter to his family, a letter filled with his true feelings, his realization of him not being suitable as the King of Diamonds and an apology for his mother and siblings for running away from home and swore he would never get back to the Avery Manor as it is his fate. His escape made his family devastated, Bruce and Mabel had an argument and eventually got into a divorce. The people in Diamond Empire knew about his escape and earned the title; "The Runaway Candidate". This embarrassed Bruce and decided to use his second son Malachi as Jacob Bennett's replacement.

Jacob Bennett didn't go too far during his escape. He stayed in the Diamond Empire as he lived in the streets. He became an anonymous bandit, stealing everything he finds interesting (mainly food and treasures) and would sometimes be seen leaping through the rooftops of everyone's houses and was feared by people. He met Olivia Green during one of his "hunting season" in which he stole the gal's prized possession but he immediately got confronted by her (mainly just her smacking him with her satchel or something). He returned the object he stole from her and she left with an angry look on her face. The interaction made Jacob fall in love with her. This made Jacob watch her secretly but still made Olivia notice his presence. The activity continued till Olivia decided to confront him, again. They became friends after a lot of confrontations and hangouts.

A year later, Jacob heard a rumor from the vendors that his mother and sisters went to the Country of Spades after divorcing his father. This made Jacob plan to travel towards the Country of Spades to see them. When he arrived, he got into trouble right away after he stole something that was meant for Patricia Rakepick, the former Ace of Spades and the current ruler during that time. He was brought to Rakepick and she decided that Jacob would be put to prison for both stealing and offending the queen. He stayed in prison for months and met his sister Maya who got dragged by the knights towards her cell. The two escaped together with the help of the Escape Artist (Jacob Cromwell by @carewyncromwell sorry for tagging you :'D). Jacob, Maya and their sister Marigold escaped from the Country of Spades and went back to Diamond Empire. Upon his return, he was confronted by his brother and the current King of Diamonds, Malachi and the siblings reunited.

𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐉𝐚𝐜𝐨𝐛 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐭:

• Just like his siblings, Jacob is kind, friendly, charming and intelligent. He can also be foolish and impatient.

• Jacob became a traveling treasure hunter for the Diamond Empire and also became a knight of the Empire, not a high ranking knight. He was offered by Malachi to be the Duke of Avery Manor but he refused.

• He's shy around women. When confronted by Olivia he would just be quiet. But after he and the gal became friends, he felt comfortable interacting with her.

• He is still called as the "Runaway Candidate" not by the people in the Diamond Empire, but also from the people in other regions.

• He is also a strategic person like his brother Malachi.

• He likes giving gifts especially to Olivia. He would give her red and yellow roses as a sign of love and friendship. He also accept (and assumes) that the gal didn't like him back but all his focus is their closeness as she was his very first friend aside his siblings.

• He's currently staying at the Joker's domain for a treasure hunt.

Shakespeare Weekend

This weekend we are wrapping up Nicholas Rowe’s (1674-1718) The Work of Mr. William Shakespear; in Six Volumes. Published in London in 1709 by Jacob Tonson (1655–1736), this second edition holds an important place within Shakespearean publication history. The Work of Mr. William Shakespear; in Six Volumes is recognized as the first octavo edition, the first illustrated edition, the first critically edited edition, and the first to present a biography of the poet. 

Volume six is a collection of Shakespeare’s tragedies and comedies including several plays that are a part of the Shakespeare apocrypha that bear Shakespeare’s name, but do not appear in the First Folio and of which there is question about his role in writing them. Apocrypha in the sixth volume include Pericles Prince of Tyre, London Prodigal, Thomas Lord Cromwell, Sir John Oldcastle, The Puritan, A Yorkshire Tragedy, and Locrine. Volume six also includes confirmed Shakespearean plays Antony and Cleopatra and Cymbeline. 

A full-page engraving by the French Baroque artist and book illustrator François Boitard (1670-1715) and engraved by English engraver Elisha Kirkall (c.1682–1742) precedes each play. Boitard’s illustrations often place readers at the pinnacle of the plays depicting high drama in his classic Baroque style. 

In addition to Rowe’s editorial decisions to divide the plays into scenes and include notes on the entrances and exits of the players, he also normalised the spelling of names and included a dramatis personae preceding each play. The only chronicled critique of Rowe’s momentous editorial endeavor is his choice in basing his text on the corrupt Fourth Folio.

Hey, all! This is my entry for #ockiss24, organized by @ockissweek, depicting my OC, Lane Bach Cromwell, kissing her eight-year-old son Jacob goodnight! For those of you wondering where my girl Carewyn is, well, she IS in the picture, even if you can't see her...because this is set in 1972, the year Carewyn was born! (Lane's in her second trimester.)

But yeah, prior to Carewyn's birth, Jacob's life was...not great. From not getting on with his clean-cut, conventional Muggle father Evan to being completely alone and outcasted at school because of his "delinquent" outbursts (in truth evidence of very powerful underage magic), Jacob was a very unhappy child. Partly to vent his frustrations and resentments, Jacob would act out and disrespect or even flat-out ignore his teachers, which this year in particular almost resulted in him not being allowed to go on to year 4 of primary school. It was only his distinctly average grades at the time that kept that from happening, because no, boy genius Jacob was not having trouble with any of the material: he was just bored as all get-out and hated jumping through hoops for people who looked down their noses at him. Even so, the conference that Evan and Lane had with Jacob's principal -- in which the principal ripped into Evan for his and Lane's lack of discipline and even suggested at one point that Jacob could do with a year or two of military school to straighten him out -- resulted in Evan summoning Jacob down to the dining table for a "family meeting" that night that ended up way more heated than it should've.

Evan was very stern. He told Jacob that he and Lane did not want to have to send him to military school when he was more than smart enough to know better and respect his elders -- Jacob snapped back that his teachers didn't want respect from him: they just wanted him to sit down and shut up and be a mindless little bobble-head, just like all the other kids in class, so that they could keep acting like they were smarter than the toadies they taught. For someone like Evan -- whose father had been arrested and sentenced to life in prison when Evan was a very young boy -- Jacob's lack of respect toward authority figures was very troubling. Evan scolded Jacob that he would never amount to anything worthwhile if he didn't put in the work and behave himself, and even shamed Jacob, pointing out that he and Lane had more than enough to worry about with a new baby on the way without having to punish Jacob for things he knew he shouldn't do. Jacob lashed out in response.

"Oh yeah, right, 'the baby!' The baby, the baby, the baby! Can't forget about how many more hours at work you suddenly have to put in 'because of the baby!' As if that hasn't just been a lovely little excuse for you to not be around to deal with all the stupid stuff I get blamed for -- if you'd actually been around, then maybe you would've bloody realized that I'm already getting punished, all the time, for doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG!"

From there, Evan and Jacob's tempers only flared further. Lane -- ever a pacifist and yet completely unequipped to deal with such explosive anger, thanks to her abusive childhood -- was unable to step between them or bring the temperature down...and so the fight only ended when Evan, his temper thoroughly spent, lost his head. Jacob yelled at Evan for never seeing him as anything but a troublemaker, and Evan responded in perhaps the worst possible way.

"BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT YOU ARE, JACOB! Every other day, I have to read a message from your teachers, or your principal -- even other parents about the trouble you get up to, and time and again, you refuse to take any responsibility for the trouble you cause! How is anyone ever going to see you as anything other than a shame and a burden, when all you ever do is cause everyone else trouble?!"

Jacob was so overwhelmed with pain and anger he couldn't properly express that he shoved his chair aside with enough force that the bottom of the legs actually somehow caught fire. Lane hurriedly rushed to put out the magical flames before Evan could pay them too much mind, but Jacob -- too emotional to even acknowledge that outburst of magic -- ran out of the dining room and upstairs to his bedroom, where he slammed the door shut with force.

Evan was regretful about what he'd said, after the fact. He didn't quite know how to broach the issue, since he still felt Jacob had done wrong and needed to own up to it before he gave their son a proper apology -- so Lane went upstairs to speak to Jacob herself, after calming Evan down and making sure she'd given Jacob enough time to cool off too. When Lane opened the door to Jacob's room, she found her poor son burying his face into his pillow, trying in vain to obscure the many messy tear tracks down his cheeks.

"Did I cause you trouble again, Mum?" was all he could mumble miserably through his pillow.

Her heart hurting, Lane brought a stool over so she could sit next to Jacob's bed. She sat near him for a while, letting Jacob vent and reassuring him multiple times that Evan was just upset: that she and he didn't just see Jacob as a burden or a troublemaker, that they loved him, and all they wanted was for him to be the amazing, talented, smart boy they knew he was. Lane wasn't sure how much Jacob believed this -- he had trouble meeting her eye, even as he changed into his pajamas and she tucked him into bed. It didn't take long for Lane to suss out why, after Jacob echoed Evan's words from earlier.

"I wasn't trying to cause trouble, Mum. Honest. I know you're not feeling well...I know you have to worry about the baby now, not me..."

It was hard to miss the miserable, faintly resentful tone to her son's words. Lane's eyes softened sadly.

"Jay...of course I'll have to worry about the baby...and yes, I might need to spend a lot of time with them, since they won't be able to clean, feed, or dress themselves yet. But just because I'll have to take care of your little brother or sister when they arrive does not mean I'll stop taking care of you. It doesn't mean I won't still be here for you, when you really need me..."

She brought a hand through Jacob's curly black-brown hair.

"Time might have limits, but love doesn't. I remember my friend Judy liked to say that love is renewable -- it's not a cake that has to get cut up into smaller pieces for more people to enjoy it. The more you love, the more love there is to go around. No matter how much I will love your baby brother or sister when they get here, it doesn't mean I will love you any less. You will always be my little Blue Jay. And I will always love you with all my heart."

Jacob wasn't even fully aware of it when he started crying again, but as his mother kissed him goodnight, he felt the tension relaxing in his shoulders. He laid back against his pillows, closing his eyes.

"...Mum?" he asked hesitantly after a moment.

"Yes, Jay?"

"Do you think the baby will like me?" he mumbled.

The doubt and uncertainty echoing through the question broke Lane's heart.

"They will love you," she said gently.

"Even if I'm nothing but a troublemaker?"

Lane frowned deeply. It truly did seem that those words of Evan's had hurt him far too deeply for Lane's reassurance alone to heal.

"You are not, have never been, and will never be 'nothing,' Jacob. ...I promise, one day, you will see what I see, when I look at you -- a smart, curious, creative, special boy...ready to take flight and take on the world. And when that day comes, I know the whole world will see it too."

Jacob's face seemed to soften a little bit, losing some of the creases in his features.

"...Thanks, Mum."

Lane's blue eyes softened as she turned off the wall light and gently closed the door to her son's room.

A few months later, Lane gave birth to Jacob's little sister, Carewyn. And true to Lane's words, the little baby she nicknamed "Winnie" loved Jacob dearly, and ended up being his first real friend in the world.

23. PRE-BATTLE BONFIRE

AS THE SNOW FELL AROUND US, we set up a camp in the woods. The nomads stood still as Jacob brought some wood from the fallen trees and dropped it on the ground. I did help him out by making sure no snow was touching the woods. When I got up, I spotted Ben with his index finger up and a little flame emerged on his fingertip. I gave him a smirk before his whole hand turned into a flame and threw it into the woods.

The fire rose, gleaming with the warm yellowish orange and bright white among it. I could imagine the warmth surrounding the cold winter night in the woods. I knew that the fire would destroy me yet I still admired its majesty and beauty. I never knew that something that could hurt you turned out to be beautiful.

"That's what I'm talkin' about," Jacob said, smiling at Ben, and walked to a log. "Little pre-battle bonfire. Telling war stories."

Jacob sat next to Ben and I sat beside him. He looked across the fire and sees the other vampires standing still. Zafrina and Senna held hands as they stared at each other. Maybe she was showing visuals to her sister as a coping mechanism before the war.

"Or just standing there like frickin' statues," Jacob commented which somehow made Ben chuckle.

I let out a sigh. "We could entertain ourselves while we wait," I suggested.

"Like what?" Ben asked.

Suddenly, before I could answer him, Garrett spun in and sat next to us by the fire. He must have heard us from afar.

"Name any American battle," Garrett told us. "I was there."

Is any American battle? Well, crap. There goes my knowledge of American history. And thankfully, Jacob thought of one.

"Little Bighorn," he replied.

Little Bighorn? I never heard of it. Or maybe it was and I wasn't paying attention.

"I came this close to biting Custer," Garrett answered, his finger and thumb barely touching each other. "But the Indians got him first."

Just then, Kate spun in and sat on Garrett's knee.

"Try Oleg's assault on Constantinople," Kate added. "He didn't win that one on his own."

"If you're talking battles," I heard Liam speaking and his coven sat next to him. "You're talking about the Eleven Years' war. No one does rebellion like the Irish."

"You lost the Eleven Years' war," Garrett commented.

"Aye. But it was one hell of a rebellion."

"Woah, okay," I said. "I seriously need to know. What happened at Little Bighorn and the Eleven Years' war?"

"It marked the most decisive Native American victory and the worst U.S. Army defeat in the long Plains Indian War," Jacob explained. "The demise of Custer and his men outraged many white Americans and confirmed their image of the Indians as wild and bloodthirsty."

"The Eleven Years' war was the Irish theatre of the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, a series of civil wars in the kingdoms of Ireland, England and Scotland," Siobhan then explained. "All ruled by Charles the First."

A few other vampires - the rest of the Denali and Peter and Charlotte - started to come over to the campfire.

"It has changed Ireland forever," she continued. "The long-term causes of the war were colonisation and religious conflict there but the short-term cause was the destabilisation of English politics. The rebellion saw massacres of both Protestants and Catholic civilians."

"You better be not talking about Oliver Cromwell," I heard Joseph yelling and I saw him coming over. "I hated that pratt."

"I was just about to mention him," Siobhan replied with a stern look. "With his involvement with the invasion of Ireland."

For some reason, that name rang a bell. I think I read about him in a history book. I turned my gaze to him.

"Was he the guy who banned everything and took over Britain?" I asked him.

"That's why I hated him," Joseph replied bitterly, his gold eyes staring at the fire, and looking at me.  "Hence I was a Cavalier."

"Really?" I asked, shocked, and he nodded.

"It was two years after I was turned when I joined," Joseph explained. "Of course, I did use a fake name. Henry Gabriel. The first name is after my brother, and the surname is after the man who gives me a second chance to live."

"Didn't the Cavaliers lose to the Roundheads?" Liam questioned. 

Joseph's face turned stern and slowly moved his head to Liam. He pointed at the Irish vampire. "Shut up," he muttered, making Liam chuckle.

Then, Ethan came over and sat between me and Joseph.

"You guys talking about wars?" Ethan asked and I nodded. "You know, I was in a war. The Second World War."

I snickered and shook my head. There was no way in hell that Ethan could be in the Second World War.

"Yeah, Ethan," I said through my laughter. "Nice try getting in the conversation but it has to be more realistic than that."

Ethan's face sternly stiffened. Then, Joseph tapped on my shoulder and I looked at him.

"He was in the Second World War," Joseph replied.

I smirked but it slowly disappeared when I stared at his serious face. Then, I eyed Ethan.

"You were really in the Second World War?" I said astonishingly.

"Yep." Ethan nodded. "I was around fifteen when it started and it wasn't until three years later was when I joined. That's when I discovered my family are vampires."

My eyes widened as the rest of them sat around the campfire.

"We decided to join," Simon said. "Mostly because of Alana's paranoia."

"You can't blame me," Alana spoke. "I'm his mum."

"Technically, Gabriel, Joseph and Simon went to war," Mum jumped in. "While Alana and myself were back in London keeping it going."

I turned my head to Rhona. "Where were you at?" I asked her.

"Feeding humans and trying not to get noticed," she replied. "Not an exciting life compared to them."

"At least I had a story to impress you," Joseph smirked at her.

"Or showed me," Rhona laughed, hugging his arm.

I thought about Ethan's human time at the war. Simon told me about him turning his stepson when Ethan was twenty-one.

"Hey, Ethan," I said and he looked at me with his gold eyes. "How did you become a vampire?"

"Well, I was in his office informing the general that I had done my mission," he began. "Must have been around ten-thirty at least. I was heading out when I spotted a man attacking a woman. He was saying something in German so I didn't quite make out what he was saying. Then, I saw their symbol."

He said with disgust in his voice. "He was dragging her into a van and I ran with great speed. I pulled the man off him and started punching him. Then I felt a sharp pain in my stomach and I pressed my hand against it, only to see my blood coming out."

I blinked and pursed my lips together.

"I couldn't recall exactly what happened but I just remembered waking up three days later as a vampire," Ethan ended.

Then, I turned my head over to a tent where Bella was caressing her daughter's hair as Renesmee slept in her sleeping bag. They looked so peaceful together. It must be so unfair for them to have your forever starting only to possibly end it all in a heartbeat.

As more vampires — and a few shapeshifters — gathered around the fire, I decided to leave and climbed up a tree. I sat on a branch and saw the sun rising. The orange light pierced the sky with its sunlight and I could see little glitter sparkling on my hand. The little diamonds embedded in my pale cold skin. I returned my gold eyes to the sun.

"Aurora," I heard Simon speaking next to me.

I flinched, his presence caught me off guard. "What?" I asked him, confused.

"Aurora," he repeated himself and turned his head to me. "It's my way of saying dawn. And it's breaking the night."

I smiled and looked back at the sun. Breaking dawn approached us. It was my first time seeing the sun rising.

And it could be my last.

Six Sentence Sunday

I was tagged by three (possibly more I think I missed one) people for this over the last two Sundays, so I'm just going to group things together here for my latest writing session and share a chunk of it. I was tagged by @ceph-the-ghost-writer, @dragonedged-if, and @ambiguouspuzuma.

Rules: Share the six most recent, or semi-recent sentences of your WIP.

“Without the staff how can I…”

“Trust yourself,” Vitis answered, “Do not worry so much. You lived on instinct before if Illene’s tales are true, yes?” 

“Look where that got me,” Judith said.

“I’m not advocating for a total lack of thought, but finding your own balance is key. Finding the same feeling you had back then when you leaned on the crystal of your staff, but carrying that weight in yourself. Can you bear it, Judith Cromwell?” 

Bear it? Hardly. She’d cracked in two just from trying to manage both Jacob and Illene at once. The power flowed back into her body without warning, surely. It was too dangerous to get so close. To feel them. As much as she wished it, they’d not fully been at her side. They never could be. They had all died, and the weight of that knowledge and what it really meant was still a stone in her stomach. She couldn’t be as carefree as she’d been in Arigale. 

But she didn’t need to be. 

The glow of Illene waiting and willing to go with her again after all that had occurred showed that although she had changed, they may still stand at her side as best as they were able. Desires for more wouldn’t be able to be quenched, not now that she knew what having a family that was fully present in spirit and body was like, yet she could carry that weight if it meant keeping what was left safe. 

Pink light from the spirit orb flickered in her hands. No, not flickering, but pulsing. Judith’s eyes widened as she drew her friend closer. Her heartbeat was in her ears, pounding through her neck, and pushing heat through her skin. Illene’s pulse matched her own. Judith smiled with tears fresh in her eyes. 

“Go on,” Illene beckoned softly.

Shakespeare Weekend

The ninth volume of The works of Mr. William Shakespear: in ten volumes published in 1728 by Alexander Pope (1688-1744) and Dr. George Sewell (d. 1726) for Jacob Tonson (1655-1736), is considered a supplementary volume added to the collection in the second edition. As previously mentioned, Volume 9 includes the additional booksellers of C, A. Bettesworth, and F. Clay, in Trust for Richard, James, and Bethel Wellington. Scene divisions, stage directions, dramatis personae, and full-page engravings by either French artist Louis Du Guernier (1677-1716) or Englishman Paul Fourdrinier (1698-1758) precede each play. 

The volume contains seven plays; Pericles, Prince of Tyre, The London Prodigal, Thomas Lord Cromwell, Sir John Oldcastle, The Puritan, A Yorkshire Tragedy, and Locrine. Thematically the plays span genres ranging from comedy, tragedy and history, but they all share the same underlying question over authorship. The plays were originally attributed to William Shakespeare due to “Written by W.S.” appearing on the title pages of early quartos. Scholars have since argued that the “W.S.” could alternatively credit dramatists and Shakespeare contemporaries Wentworth Smith or William Sly, and historians now attribute Sir John Oldcastle and A Yorkshire Tragedy to prolific Jacobean playwright Thomas Middleton. 

Except it's not the last volume, there's one more supplemental volume left that we'll look at next week!
