Hallmark fans will likely think of When Calls the Heart first when it comes to Erin Krakow (its star and an executive producer), but she’s also all over the network’s movies, both rom-coms and Christmas. When TV Insider caught up with Krakow in April about her latest Hallmark Channel film, The Wedding Cottage, we also took the opportunity to have her reminisce on some of her past work — including the first season of the long-running drama.

“I feel like I’m really living it out with every project that [Hallmark] offers me. I’m so grateful for the characters I’ve had the pleasure of playing and that I’ve been able to executive produce on When Calls. It’d be an interesting new challenge to direct something for Hallmark maybe one day and maybe write something someday,” she told us of her Hallmark bucket list. “I don’t know. I would be curious to know what others would want to see from me if maybe there’s a different kind of character they’d be curious to see me play. But I don’t know that there’s anything that’s screaming at me right now. I’m feeling very happy and grateful with what I’ve been given.”

When Calls the Heart Season 1 (2014)

“Season 1 feels like a lifetime ago and sort of just yesterday all at once. It’s this bizarre feeling. But it was a really exhausting and incredible chapter of my life. And I continue to feel so proud to be a part of When Calls the Heart and grateful that the Hearties have kept us on the air all these years, that Hallmark continues to believe in our show. Season 1, I think we filmed it in 2013, [and] it aired in 2014. It was a long time ago. And the show has changed and grown a lot since then. But looking back, I just feel a lot of pride to be a part of it.”

Chance at Romance (2014)

“This was my first Hallmark movie and I remember just being so overwhelmed when it was offered to me. It was such a fantastic script. Working with Ryan McPartlin was great, Patricia Richardson, these people were incredible. And then of course, our young Donny [Ian Andrew] who orchestrated the whole thing. That was a really fun project that continues to air, and I think it’s a favorite of our viewers.”

“Oh man, the late great Alan Thicke. Also super fun. What a treasure. And that was where I first met Genea Charpentier who joined us on When Calls for a while. And Jaeda Lily Miller was also in that movie as was Gracyn Shinyei. These are all some of our young talent from When Calls. So it was fun to get to work on a movie with them as well.”

Father Christmas Trilogy (2016, 2017 & 2018)

“This is when I first worked with Terry Ingram, who directed The Wedding Cottage. He directed Finding Father Christmas. That was a great trilogy. The books were written by Robin Jones Gunn. I’m not saying that to toot my own horn, I truly felt like they had a lot of heart, and they were important stories to tell because not everyone has the cookie cutter family with the happy traditions around the holidays. And I heard from a lot of viewers that being able to see Miranda’s perspective around family and around the holidays was refreshing for them, to get to see something reflected back to them that represented their own journey. So I was proud to be a part of something a little different in that story.”

“Any opportunity to get back on the horse. That was a lot of fun, to play a kind of cowgirl, and I worked with a lot of the same crew from When Calls. So those people are like family to me. It was a really good time.”

“This was really fun because Luke Macfarlane and I went to college together in New York, and he was an upperclassman, so I looked up to him, but we didn’t really get to work together in school. But it was a lot of fun to get to work together on this movie and reminisce about our time at school and just become closer pals. He’s a really great guy.”

It Was Always You (2021)

“This was my first time working with Tyler Hynes, and he was fantastic and so just present on set and a great person. This was also a very bold script written by Kathy Kloves. I think we were both really taken by how different this story was, and it was a really brave choice for Hallmark. I think they were doing something outside the box a little bit here. The story of a woman who falls out of love with her fiancé and into love with his brother is a tricky line to walk. So Tyler and I were very cautious about how we handled it, but I think we were both super proud of that love story. And it seems like our viewers must have loved it because they’re still talking about it and really campaigning for a sequel.”

Season 8 episode 9 Pre Wedding Jitters

That scene in 👏Nathan's 👏office👏 The lines they wrote for Kevin *chef's kiss* perfection. I mean, I still dont like this whole secret reveal thing. I think it's so dumb. Like, ain't no way the writers intended Nathan to have this secret when he first came to the show. I don't think he was suppose to have any secret at all. I mean, this whole, 'There's something he's not telling me' thing came out of nowhere. That aside, the love confession was great, again, and he left Elizabeth speechless again and she ran away, AGAIN. That tells me all I need to know. She cannot deny this man BECAUSE SHE LOVES HIM. And if y'all think otherwise than you're delusional.

The game at the bachelorette party. It was obvious from the promo for this episode how this would play out. She reaches for Nathan's hands and thinks he's the one. (I was predicting that she would know it was Nathan and then feel uncomfortable and move on, but that didnt happen. She thought he was Lucas *bleh. Though I was still right in thinking Nathan would be 'the one' during this little game). We like that. I really liked how the party scene lasted longer than I expected. It wasnt even too long of a scene, but it was definitely long for When Calls the Heart. This show really needs to work on it's pacing. Everything happens so fast bc they have to cut to the millions of side plots that happen in every episode. My gosh, would they give us some focus please.

When Lucas came by Elizabeth's house in the morning I enjoyed that they interacted more casually with each other it seemed, at least it did on Elizabeth's part. Just through small details like the way she was casually leaning in the doorframe or her tone of voice. She wasnt so awkwardly polite...but Lucas still was. Lucas is so polite it's uncomfortable. Like I don't feel like anybody could just be themselves around him, bc it's like every meeting has this awkward air of being polite to an acquaintance you dont know well. Ugh it's so weird. I didnt like that Elizabeth told him Nathan's reveal. I feel she should have kept that to herself. Ugh and then Lucas wanted to act all protective and 'talk' to Nathan. Oh please. That is not his place. Elizabeth is obviously the one who needs to talk with Nathan and it's no one else's business what goes in between them, besides Allie of course. And speaking of Allie, I thought her scenes were really good and thoughtful. I still think it was weird that Lucas got her a gift for her adoption ceremony, but whatever we are past that now. I like that her character is being more mature about everything too. I really hope we get a scene where Allie and Elizabeth have their own conversation though. They need it. I'm not sure how I feel about that obvious Paul (Florence's son) having a crush on Allie. It seems that the writers will want them to like each other. I guess it could be cute? It's just a little awkward bc we havent seen this Paul kid around before so it creates a weird air that the only reason he shows up now is to be a school crush for Allie. Eh. Jaeda was great though and I think she did her scenes well.

After Lucas and E talked, I think it's obvious to Lucas that Elizabeth has strong feelings for Nathan and that she's just running away from them. I mean, she told Lucas that when Nathan told her he loves her all she could do was say nothing and just leave. *holds out arms and stares with a 'well, there you have it' expression'* IT DOESNT GET ANY CLEARER THAN THAT. I wonder if the writers will make Lucas step down bc he cant be with someone who will never love him. Idk how Lucas will react honestly, Lucas's character is such a mystery to me I could never know what he would do in a situation that didnt involve setting up a perfectly romantic date or sweet talking someone with an annoyingly, unrealistic, perfectly understanding polite response.

Elizabeth was also super rude to the people she cares about in this episode. The way she talked to Rosemary. First, she didnt like hearing what Rosemary had to say, which implies that she may have been blaming Nathan for Jack's death. That is such a horrible thing to hold against someone. I mean I could understand why she would feel that way but just for a moment. I mean she should understand how completely wrong and irrational that thought process is and that she shouldnt blame Nathan. TWO, then she had the nerve to tell Rosemary something like 'why would you think that comment would help me right now'. Wow Elizabeth. Gee, maybe she's saying the truth and she's also your friend and just trying to talk things through and give her opinion as a way to help you through your difficult situation. God forbid she doesnt say the perfect thing that you needed to hear at that time, she can't read your mind. I thought that was incredibly rude. It hurt to see Rosemary hurt. And then later she told her that she should leave her house. *SCOFF* man, she was really hitting Rosemary hard this episode. If I were in Rosemary's shoes, yes I would be hurt, but I think I would mostly be understanding of what Elizabeth might be going through and not take anything personally. E's lucky that Rose is such a good friend. OH! What Rosemary told Nathan in the library! She totally implied with her little metaphor comparison that Nathan was making Elizabeth unhappy by getting in the way of true love, i.e. Lucas and Elizabeth. I-- wow! Everyone is against this man. I'm so glad that Nathan stands firm. I mean he knows that Elizabeth feels strongly for him based off her reactions to his honesty with her and how she never denies anything and just runs away. I mean, it's plain as day. Let's not forget the *speechless gaze into each other's eyes* 'I can't' from Honestly, Elizabeth.

I think that's it regarding the love triangle. I absolutely despise the Faith and Carson relationship. And I cant believe they made him say, come with me to Baltimore and we can see in a year if we want to get married. That is so dumb. He just asked Faith to drop everything and leave her life in Hope Valley for a 'I might break up with you in a year' situation. Dumb. This is definitely out of character for Carson. It's obvious the writers are just trying to get rid of him and make him not be missed by the audience. They clearly want us to favor Faith, but she couldnt be more annoying honestly. I wish she were leaving and Carson would stay in Hope Valley. But whatever.

I dont like how every side plot seems to be about some couple's budding relationship. I mean aside from the love triangle, we have Florence and Ned, Molly and Bill, Clara and Jesse (though not a budding relationship, it's still all about their relationship) and now Rachel and Christopher and oh yes also Fiona and whoever that guy is and wow I'm still missing Faith and Carson. Thats 6 other romantic relationships in the show (not including the also important one of Rosemary and Lee) and I'm probably leaving one out. Oh yes, now possibly Allie and Paul. 7. Seven relationship side plots!!! Omg I'm going crazy!! They need to learn how to write some actual plot! What happened to town problems and family drama! Thank goodness we have Henry Gowen and his son (cant believe I just complimented that out of nowhere concept but hey) and the oil thing with Lucas and Henry, barely ever a plot line. This show needs better writing. There's no glue holding the town together and even when there is, it's so small or happens so fast that it doesnt have any long lasting and meaningful affect.

If I weren't so invested in Elizabeth's plotline and in need of some wholesome tv, I would have stopped watching a long time ago. Oh and the last thing. The mention of Abigail. I'm so glad Henry mentioned her because she was very important to him and his character growth. His character arc is one of the saving graces of the show and it needs to be given more attention.

Okay in short, Elizabeth was hecka rude, Nathan is wonderful and so was that office scene. We also stan Allie. Next week's episode also looks like a dud and I dont think much will happen.

Jaeda was honestly so good in that episode. I know at first people were worried that Allie would be another Cody* character, but the writers really seemed to learn from the mistakes they made in writing Cody and made the effort to write Allie well. We’re definitely reaping the rewards of that now.

*I don’t think the actor is amazing by any means but I still blame most of his “bad acting” on terrible scripts and bad storytelling. They kept giving him plots that would have been better suited to a 7 or 8-year-old and then surprise-pikachu-face’d when people said they didn’t like Cody. I mean, because you’re writing a teenage boy like a little kid and it’s annoying...

I think they should have let Nathan cry in the scene tbh, but I’m glad he did look so moved by the whole thing. 

Honestly the quality in episodes this season has gone up by SO MUCH. I feel like this is the show I’ve been waiting literal years for. I wish they could go back and rewrite/refilm S5, 6, and 7 with this writer. We’d be in a much different place then, don’t you think?

Hmmm, So I am a Ravenclaw (even though I am a dumbass but then again, they’re about creativity, learning, etc) @gwendolynejones-stacy would be a Gryffindor or Ravenclaw. Gryffindor bc they’re not afraid to call me out at any time. Ravenclaw bc I remember her saying that they love learning things and she’s witty @rutimaticasi is 100% Hufflepuff. They’re loyal and kind. I love how he’s always there for the Dumb Dumbs and they just straight up emit the vibes @shadedrose01 I’m on the fence about either Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff. She’s super creative and amazes me all the time which has me think of Ravenclaw. She’s also witty like Em. Hufflepuff bc she also emits the vibe. She’s pretty chill and loyal and all around great. @wayward-fairchild I would put in Ravenclaw too. She’s always, always writing and posting tons of works which amazes me every time. I don’t know how she does it but all I know is that I see her in Ravenclaw @peachy-keener is either Hufflepuff or Gryffindor. They’re hard working and kind but also courageous and brave. They could also be Ravenclaw bc they’re such a great writer and I aspire to be like them when it come to writing @cybersleuthcat gives me Gryffindor vibes the most idk why,,, They just do,,, Now for the honorary Dumb Dumbs! (If anything about this is overtly wrong, please be kind… I’m new to the Dark Crystal Community and will take kind criticism… Thanks.) Reeja is half Dousan and half Sifa. This seems the oddest combination to those who are fans of the Dark Crystal as the Sifa are found along the Coast of the Silver Sea and Dousan usually keep to themselves and remain in the Wellspring, an oasis deep in the Crystal Desert. Dousan can also be a bit Xenophobic (racist) and don’t usually invite other clans in or have mixed relations. When Risand of clan Sifa lost someone dear to him, he traveled to the Crystal Desert, which had always been that Gelflings dream. Upon seeing it, he sang a song of their death that carried on the wind to Jaeda of Clan Dousan who had been out on her Crystal Skimmer hunting. When she told him of her people’s way of mourning death with Music, Risand asked to witness one such ritual. Jaeda said he would have to ask Maudra Seethi, and took him back to the Wellspring to do just that. For whatever reason, Maudra Seethi agreed and Risand stayed on a time with them, staying in Jaeda’s house as was Seethi’s instruction. Risand left some months later and it was found that Jaeda was pregnant. Fearing some of her clans hostility toward a mixed child and mixed mating, she made the journey to the Silver Sea to be with Risand. Risand had gone on a voyage and had not returned. So, Jaeda bought passage onto SkekSa’s ship as it was leaving Cera-Na Port and while they were out searching for Risan’s ship, their child was born. They never did find Risand, and in a strange turn of events, Jaeda died, leaving the child in SkekSa’s care. SkekSa wasn’t too sure of it at first, but took to the Gelfling Halfling who was barely two rotations old at the time. She became a part of SkekSa’s crew and no one crossed her for fear of SkekSa’s wrath for she became SkekSa’s greatest treasure. Under SkekSa’s care, the child was named Reeja and taught to read, write, pillage, and sail on her own. She had a life of adventure on the Crystal Sea, and took on many of SkekSa’s ways though tempered by her Gelfling nature. Even though she enjoyed life on the ship with SkekSa and crew, she yearned for a quest of her own.

This is gonna be the last chapter for a while since I am putting this particular story on hiatus until December which is when I will rewrite it. I’m just not happy with the way its turning out and I need to figure an actual plot. Plus the writing quality is just not up to the standards I want to give you guys. So! Without further ado, please enjoy chapter 6

    Jeonghan continued to smile while waiting for your answer. You didn’t trust him.

    “I’m here with your boss’s guest.” you replied as ambiguously as possible.

    The corner of Jeonghan’s mouth twitched in annoyance. He knew you were trying to dodge his question.

    “So you’re here with Jun.” he reasoned. You tried not to let your face express how surprised you were that he knew Jun’s name. He smirked.

    “I’ve only been able to hear a bit about his situation, but it sounds serious. Anything to make Jun abandon his precious city hideout must be pretty bad.” he dragged slightly  trying to get you to divulge any info you might know.

    Unfortunately for both of you, you knew nothing.

    “I don’t know. All I know is that we’re being chased.” you told him both truthfully and diplomtically.

    While this answer seemed to make Jeonghan relax his interrogation, it did nothing to satisfy his curiosity.

    Well aren’t you boring.” he huffed sitting down next to you on the sofa.

    You didn’t grace him with a response.

    “How long have you been Jun’s lackey?” Jeonghan asked conversationally.

    “I’ve been working with him for over a year.”

    “Working for him, you mean. No one works with Jun. You either hire him or he hires you. And he most definitely hired you.”

    You shot him a glare, he only smiled coyly at you.

    “So what makes you so special to have been invited into the lions’ den? Jun’s a drop them after a couple of months kinda guy. Not a let’s save her from certain death and risk my own hide kind of guy.” Jeonghan nonchalantly explained, “He’s had plenty of runners before but never kept them around for very long.”

    “I don’t know.” you admitted. The thought of being thrown away by Jun at this point made you nervous. You hoped for your sake that he wouldn’t ‘drop’ you like the supposed others.

    “I wish he had kept that girl, Jaeda around. She was definitely more the mafia type than you. A real spitfire. Great body too. Wonder why he got rid of her.”

    You could tell he was trying to goad a response out of you and you refused to rise to the bait. Why should you even care if Jun worked with more experienced… hotter girls before. You told yourself this but could still feel a nagging inside questioning if she was really better than you. You hated it. Your thoughts were interrupted by the open and close of a fridge door sounding in the room over. You and Jeonghan both looked in the direction of what you guessed to be the kitchen. Shortly after a a guy who you would’ve guessed to be around your age came shuffling through the doorway in pajamas, bowl of cereal  in hand.

    “Oh.” he said in halfhearted surprise, “No one told me, we would have company today.”

    “This is Jun’s lackey, who has so far remained unnamed.”

    “Vernon.” the pajama clad boy introduced himself with a full mouth and closed lipped smile. You liked him you decided.

    “I’m Y/N.” you provided.

    Vernon nodded and leaned against the wall enjoying his cereal while standing up.

    “Oh, so you tell the little punk but not me? What is my life coming to?” Jeonghan asked rhetorically, putting on his own minidrama.

    You rolled your eyes.

    “So how’s the meeting going?” Vernon asked gesturing to the room Jun had gone into earlier with his chin. As if on cue, a loud slam came from behind the metal door, making you jump in your seat.

    “Not well it would seem.” Jeonghan replied airily.

    You watched the door anxiously, hoping your employer was okay. Only because if he wasn’t safe, then you weren’t safe. That’s why. You weren’t worried about the weasel at all, of course not, you convinced yourself. You let your fingers lace, trying yourself busy. Vernon eyed you from where he was standing.

    “S.Coups probably just tripped and slammed his face on the desk again. He’s not the most coordinated.” Vernon attempted to assure you. At least he was trying to calm you.

    “Or he slammed Jun’s head into the desk.” Jeonghan taunted over your shoulder. Vernon gave him a less than  amused look. “You can’t say he wouldn’t deserve it.” Jeonghan defended himself.

    Both you and Vernon shrugged half way agreeing. You heard the metal door unlocking and turned your head. The first to walk out was Jun, who luckily did not have his head smashed in or any other bruises. You felt Jeonghan’s arm lay across the back of the couch behind you.

    “Vernon, long time no see! How you doing?” Jun greeted the boy standing next to you.

    “Good, my man. Better than you it seems.” Vernon replied the two meeting with a handshake and half hug.

    “No worries. No one’s better than me.” he replied to Vernon’s comment while winking suggestively at you.

    ‘Once a grease weasel always a grease weasel’

    “Hello Jeonghan. I see you’ve made yourself at home around my lovely employee.” He eyed Jeonghan’s arm accusingly. “I thought I told you to not talk to him.” Jun complained to you.

    “So that’s why she didn’t fall for my charms! You can’t tell people to ignore me you ass. I thought your girl was crazy! She wouldn’t even give me the time of day if i begged. No wonder she liked Vernon better. Phew. At least now I know why it felt like the twilight zone.”

    “Hey! People like me.” Vernon sulked.

    “Sure they do pajama boy.” Jeonghan shot back.

    While focusing on the conversation around you, you had failed to notice Jun coming closer until he dropped himself practically on top of Jeonghan.

    “Hey! Watch it!”

    “Oops.” Jun said lazily “Were you sitting here?” every word was emphasized with a scoot from Jun who was trying to push Jeonghan across the couch and away from you.

    Jeonghan just gave him a glare as you and Vernon chuckled. Where Jeonghan’s arm had rested earlier was now occupied by Jun’s own appendage. He was sitting a lot closer to you than Jeonghan had been but you didn’t mind much. His warm presence was familiar. You shook your head at yourself. Since when do you enjoy being around the weasel? It must be some sort of stockholm type syndrome. Wait but that would mean you actually like him. Which you don’t. Right?

    ‘Right.’

    You’ve just spent too much time around him today. You needed a break from seeing his flirty face. It was going to start having an affect on you if you didn’t get away from him soon.

    “Y/N,” Jun grabbed your attention, “I’d like you to meet a good friend of mine and also ally and our temporary host: S. Coups.” he gestured grandly to the now occupied doorway.

    There stood an athletic looking man in black slacks and a button down. Despite the sharp looking clothes, he only looked a bit sheepish rubbing at a rather large red spot on his forehead.

    “Told you so.” Vernon whispered in your direction.

    “Hi.” his greeting certainly fell flat compared to Jun’s set up. Jun heaved a sigh bringing his hand to cover his face in second hand shame. “You can call me Seungcheol.” he smiled at you, “Nice to meet you Y/N.”

    “Nice to meet you too Seungcheol.” you greeted, happy to find him not nearly as scary as you were imagining.

    “Well I think it’s about time we all get on the same page about Jun’s little problem.” Jeonghan could apparently not hold his curiosity in any longer.

    Vernon snickered at the unintended innuendo. You covered your own chuckle.

    “Hey! It’s not little!” Jun cried indignantly.

    “I agree.”

    ‘Are we all commenting on Jun’s package now?’ you laughed to yourself.

    “We need to talk things over. We’ll have to be careful. And we definitely need a plan.” S. Coups concluded.

    “Woozi?”  S. Coups raised his voice.

    “Yeah?” an staticy intercom replied.

    “Contact everyone. Let them know we’re having a mandatory meeting tomorrow night and to be here ASAP.”

    “You got it.”

    “Well,” Seungcheol looked around the room at all four of you, “looks like it’s gonna be a full house.”
