When Daisy was released the day after her operation Jake and I had to work out how to look after her and continue training. Cyclone wasn’t happy with what we worked out but he also wasn’t going argue with Iceman, when he was told we would both be doing half days, Jake there in the mornings and me there in the afternoon, until Friday, I was sitting at the table at 0730 Jake was in his uniform me and Daisy were still in our PJs when there was a knock at the door. I looked at Jake confused as he stood up to go answer it me and daisy following close behind. As the door swung open I saw my Mom and Sarah standing there.
“Mom, Aunt Sarah, what are you doing here?”
“We are here to pick up Daisy for the day.”
“What, but we still have one more day of split shifts.”
“Y/N, Tom says you are both needed on base no arguments.” I nod at Sarahs comment, I may have been confused but I wasn’t one to argue with Uncle Ice.
“Do not just stand there go and get ready.” My mom scolds and I just nod before heading to the bathroom to get ready. It only took about 15 mins for me to get ready, when I was finally dressed with my hair pulled up in its usually bun I walked out to hear Jake trying to explain to Aunt Sarah and Mom how to help Daisy.
“Jake, Honey, I raised one kid and helped your Mamma raise you and your 3 sisters and Sarah raised 3 boys, we know what to do okay.”
“I know Mrs. Y/L/N, I am just worried.”
“I know, Honey now stop fussing and go see where that daughter of mine is.” I decide at that I should make my presents known.
“I am right here Mum, stop telling Jake what to do, Jake do you want to go start the car I am just going to talk to mum and Aunt Sarah.” Jake nodded giving Daisy a kiss on the forehead before walking out the front door towards the car.
“Mum, Aunt Sarah, thank you for looking after her, now I know you both know what you are doing, but if anything happens you call me, not Jake.”
“Sweetie, wouldn’t it be better to call her father?” Aunt Sarah asks.
“No, I know what we are doing at training, I have completed the course this course 100 times already, and successfully, I need Jake training all day today, because god forbid I have to pick him for this and he can’t fly the course. He needs this training more than me.” I felt tears welling up in my eyes and my mum and aunt Sarah move forward and hug me.
“Everything will be fine now, go Jake and the team are waiting for you.” I nod and walk out to see Jake waiting in the truck and I jump in the passenger seat.
“Everything good?” I nod as Jake begins the drive to base. We finally arrive and head to the hanger where the squad is gathered, as we walk in the whole room goes quiet, I know why they all go quiet and look at us, the bags under our eyes having gotten larger due to the stress we have felt through the week. I walk to the front where Mav, Cyclone, Warlock and Ice were standing and Jake takes his seat next too Coyote, I nod to Mav, who starts explaining the mission parameters. As he explains the low flying time constrained mission I see the worried faces of the squad.
“Sir, can this mission even be flown successfully.” Mav’s breath hitches and before he can answer I start speaking.
“It can be, I have flown this course successfully but it will not happen in one day it took me nearly 48 hours of consecutive flying and I didn’t have to worry about a wingman, so today you guys will be flying the course in different teams and you will most likely fail every time but that is why we are here training and training you all so that before this mission you will fly it successfully and come home.” The whole squad nods and Mav dismisses them sending the first pair to their planes and the rest to the rec room.
“Why did you tell them they will fail Athena?” Mav asks in a low voice with slight anger behind it.
“Because they needed to hear it Sir, you have put an elite squad together who probably haven’t have a failure since graduating Top Gun, and they will fail this course but if they go in knowing that, it won’t be so disheartening.” Mav nods but I can tell that wasn’t the answer he wanted.
I sat in the class room next to Mav as we watched groups of pilots go up one after the other with no luck of anyone succeeding the course, the next up was Rooster with Phoenix and Bob. As they start flying they look on track to reaching the target, “Well Mav we may have a successful run,”
“He is flying too slow.”
“I know but at least he will make it, then we just have to work on making him faster.” Eventually they finish having made it to the target but 1 minute late, soon after that we see them land and walk towards the rec room.
“Lets rope ‘em Thena, go over their runs.” I nod and stand to walk towards the rec room I see them all sitting on the couches talking amongst themselves except Jake and Coyote who are looking at some pictures on the walls.
“Squad, listen up,” I announce and see them all sit a little straighter and look at me, “You are required to be in the class room in 5mins, so lets hustle.” They all stood up and walked I looked at Jake and Javy who had a smirk on their face. “Whatever you two are thinking do not do it, understood.” They don’t say anything as they just walk out. As I make my way back to the classroom I see everyone taking there seats as Mav pulls up the first pairs run, and starts to critique it, yelling at the pairs every time what would they tell the others family every time he asks I see the squad flinch everyone thinking of their own loved ones. Finally we get to the run the Rooster made it to the the target. Rooster and Mav start arguing with each other, which I more or less blocked out until the last moment.
“It is not the plane sir, it is the pilot!” Rooster yelled
“Exactly!” Mav yelled back, Rooster looked at him stunned, and I was to stunned to speak until Jake spoke up.
“You’re too slow, don’t you get it, a pilot flys like Maverick on this mission or they don’t come home.”
“What does that mean?” Rooster replied
“Come on I can’t be the only one who knows he flew with your old man,” there is was I thought speaking up in hopes to stop Jake. “Hangman, enough” I say.
“And I can’t be the only one who knows Mav was flying with him when he…” Before he could finish the sentence Rooster launched out of his chair at Jake, Mav and I soon followed me to grab Jake Mav to grab Rooster, the rest of the squad following to prevent a fight.
“Enough Hangman.” I say pushing him backwards into Javy’s arms. He looked down at me the rage slowly fading as he saw the anger on my face. “That is enough for the day Coyote take Hangman outside to cool down, Phoenix take Rooster to do the same! Everyone else dismissed.” I yell as everyone started to walk away I yelled again, “Lieutenant Seresin, you will report back here in 20 mins, understood.” He turned to look at me sadness and regret on his face “Yes Ma’am” he lowered his head and walked out of the door.
“Well handled Athena.” Man says to me.
“He shouldn’t have brought up Goose, Mav, but what he said was true.” Man looked at me wanting me to explain my statement. “They need to fly like you to come home from this.”
“No, Athena, they need to fly like you, you fly like me that is true, you take risk most pilots are too scared to make, but you also fly like Ice you stay calm in tough situation and always that the smartest approach, but more importantly you fly like your old man, you never leave your team behind and you fight tooth and nail to make sure everyone comes home. You are the one they need to fly like, that is why you were picked for this team, you got the best of all three of us.” I nod feeling a tear in my eye.
“We need to make a team Mav, after this Hangman, Coyote, Rooster, Payback, Fanboy, Phoenix and Bob, become our permanent team here, we need to make them one.”
“I know, any ideas?” I nod with a smile. “Athena, do you think they can handle that.”
“Rooster and I created it when I was 12 Mav, I think they can handle it.”
“Okay then, Dogfight Football it is.” Mav and I finish working out when we will get the squad together to play football, when Jake walks in still dressed in his flight suit head hung low, my relaxed demeanour changes as I tense up, Mav looks between us and mumble a quick goodbye as he leaves the room.
“Y/N I…”
“Sit down Lieutenant.” Jake straightens up and takes a seat mumbling a ma’am under his breath, “you were well out of line in there, to bring up Roosters father and to bring up the worst time in your commanders life, losing his wingman, do you know how stupid and disrespectful that was.”
“Athena I didn’t…”
“Let me guess, didn’t mean it to be offensive you just want to get under Roosters skin push him to do better, well newsflash Hangman, that is not your job, you are here to train and to make sure that you and your team come home. Why don’t you leave the training to me and Mav.”
“So you can train us to come home, like Loki!” I take a step back in shock and look at Jake whose face changed from anger to regret at his own words, “Y/N I’m…..” I cut him off as my palm connects with his cheek.
“Lieutenant you will apologise to Rooster and Mav by Monday or you will be out of the running to be selected for this mission, I need a team up there not someone who antagonises a team.” I don’t give him a chance to answer before I walk out of the room and to the change room, I thought I was alone as I punched the closed locker and started to cry, when I suddenly feel arms around my shoulders.
“Geez Athena, what the hell happened I have never seen you cry.” I look up to see Phoenix with a concerned look,
“Phe, I am sorry I didn’t realise you were still here.”
“Thena don’t worry about that what the hell happened.” I look at her before I start spilling my guts before I can even stop myself I start telling her about everything, Loki, the concern for the current mission the stress of Daisy being sick and most recently the argument I just had with Jake.
“Bloody Hangman, trust him to say something stupid, do you know what I think we need, a night at the Hard Deck, just us girls.”
“That sounds amazing, let me get changed into some plain clothes.” She nodded, I quickly went and showered and got changed before we headed to Bobs truck, after Phoenix filled him in on the events and plans he offered to drive us so us girls could ‘let loose’.
Jakes POV
I stood still in shock after Athena had slapped me and yelled at me.
‘Boy, I hope to hell I heard wrong and you did not just throw Loki in her face.’ I hear an angry stern voice behind me and spin to see Iceman with a dangerous glare looking at me.
“I didn’t mean too” I say in a low whisper, I hadn’t meant to say that to my best friend but after the week we had I was stressed and after failing the course and having Mav shout at us asking what we would tell our wingmans family I snapped at Athena.
“You seem to be doing that a lot Hangman.”
“Mav told you”
“He didn’t i heard everything.” I nod and sit down.
“Ice how do i make it up to her i just threw her dead wingman in her face.”
“Start by saying sorry and then go from there and explain to her why you snapped and what you are scared of.”
“I am not scared.”
“Yes you are Jake, i think you are scared you might lose her on this mission.”
“Is it that obvious?”
“It is to me and to Mav, that is the reason he is not mad at you, we are all scared someone won’t come back from this, and it terrifies us that it will be her because she won’t allow it to be someone else.”
“If everyone is so worried about that then why are we sending her up.”
“Because you know as well as anyone she is the only one who can fly it.”
“I can’t lose her Ice, neither can Daisy, she cannot lose the person she thinks of like a mother.”
“You need to tell her, i saw her and Phoenix talking about heading to the Hard Deck, so Daisy can have a sleepover this weekend while you guys work it out.”
“I couldnt ask you to do that while she is still recovering.”
“Boy, we raised a village of kids she will be fine, plus Sarah and Y/M/N have been doting on her all day they won’t complain about having her longer.” I nod with a small smile thinking about how spoiled my child is right now, as i stand in turn back to where Iceman is sitting.
“Why aren’t you mad at me Ice, after what i said.”
“I am but, i know we say dumb things when we are scared of losing the person we love.”
“I don’t…..” I stop as i see Ice raise and eyebrow.
“Thank you Sir.” He nods and i run off to the shower, by the time I have showered and get to my truck after talking with Mav, having an eerily similar conversation the one I had had with Ice it had been about two hours since I had seen Athena and I headed straight to the hard-deck, what i was not expecting to see was Athena and Phoenix standing on our regular pool table screaming Taylor Swift songs at the top of their lungs while Bob laughed and filmed the two. I laugh and shake my head as i head towards the bar.
I noticed Penny wasn’t behind the bar which was unusual until i felt someone smack the back of my head.
“Want to tell me why my niece was crying when she got here and has had more shots then I can count and is now on my pool table?” I turn to see Penny with an eyebrow raised.
“Would I am an idiot suffice.”
“I guess it would, Mav already told me what happened. You are lucky you are not buying a round for the whole bar.”
“But…” Penny smiled i may not have been buying a round for the bar but there had to be a catch.
“But you are paying for all the drinks Phoenix and her drink.”
“I think buying a round for the bar would be cheaper.”
“Make it right Jake, she cant stay mad at you for long but you still gotta make it up to.”
“I know, but there is something i have to do first. Can i grab 2 beers” Penny nodded and handed me the two beers and i make my way over to Rooster who is watching the two at the pool table.
“Rooster, do you mind if we talk.” He nodded and we headed out to the balcony of the hard deck.
“What do you want Hangman.”
“To say sorry, if you can believe that.”
“I don’t think it is me you need to apologise to, she told me what happened.”
“And i feel awful about it Rooster, I should never have brought up your father, and I shouldn’t have brought up Loki.”
“So what are you going to do about it Bagman?”
“I don’t know, also why do you care this is meant to be me apologising to you.”
“You said you were sorry, I haven’t forgiven you yet sure but right now it is about getting her to forgive you.”
“Again, why do you care I would have thought you would be happy we aren’t talking after all she is your sister and you hate me.”
“I don’t hate you, I don’t like you that much but I don’t hate you, besides she is happy when she is with you and when she is with Daisy. That’s all a brother can ask for is it not.” I nod at his statement and we both turn around to look at Athena and Phoenix on still on the pool table looking care free. I see Rooster light up as he looks at Phoenix.
“So when are you and Phoenix gonna stop dancing around each other and admit you both love each other?” I ask Rooster with a smirk until he retorts.
“When are you and Athena.”
“Touche” I say as we clink beers. We are out there for a little bit longer when we here the bar door swing open.
“Roo,” I hear Athena behind us and I spin “oh hi Hangman, didn’t know you were here.” I falter a little at the use of my callsign,
“What’s up Baby Ice?” Bradley responds with the nickname the ’86 squad adorned her as Ice became more protective.
“Phoenix and I are ready to go and by that I mean, Bob is currently holding her hair back, the last tequila shooters didn’t sit well.” At the notion of Phoenix being sick Bradley took off running in the direction of the bathrooms.
“Idiots.” Athena mumbles as she walks across to stand next to me looking out at the ocean.
“What are you calling them idiots for?”
“They don’t know that they are in love with each other.” I laugh at her comment.
“Athena, I am…”
“Don’t say you are sorry Jake. Not right now.”
“Why not?”
“Because, I am not far behind the state of Phoenix and I don’t think I will remember any of this night come tomorrow morning.” I look at her as her head drops forward.
“Okay I think I can see Rooster taking Phoenix and Bob home” I stop mid sentence as I see Bob also walking funny and swaying trying to keep up with Rooster. “Y/N did you two get Bob drunk?” She just laughed and nodded at my question causing me to laugh, as I look at Y/N she suddenly sways and I catch her as she falls and pick her up bridle style.
“Okay, time to get you home as well.” I walk to my truck waving to Penny as we leave her just holding a thumbs up, knowing she was giving me permission to come back tomorrow to ring up the tab for the girls. I put Y/N in the passenger seat and run around jumping in the drivers seat.
Y/N POV
I rolled over noticing I was in my bed and vividly remembering Jake carrying me to in last night after bringing me home from the Hard Deck, I looked at the clock seeing the time was on 0830, I sat up groaning and rubbed my eyes when I heard movement on the other side of the bed I turn to see Jake laying in the bed next to me.
“What the hell Jake!” He sat up with a start looking very confused. “Why the hell are you in my bed.”
“Why are you shouting at me, you didn’t want me to leave last night so I didn’t”
“Well I want you to leave now, I am still mad at you.” He nodded.
“I know I was going to apologise last night you told me not to because you wouldnt remember” i sighed and rubbed my eyes vaguely remembering having that conversation.
“If you make me coffee and breakfast I will listen to what you have to say.” I don’t think I had ever seen Jake move so quickly and I let out a little laugh before a groan as the thud in my head came back. I quickly ran to the bath room to tie my hair up and brush my teeth I look down at the top I am wearing with my flannel short noticing it is a shirt of Jakes from his last deployment which made me smile a bit. I made my way out to the kitchen where Jake was starting some pancakes, I sit at the bench where there is already a cup of coffee sitting.
“Why I am I wearing your shirt?” Jake jumped at the sound of my voice confirming he had not heard me enter the kitchen.
“Uh…you kind of threw up and got some on your other shirt, it was the first shirt I could find.” He said sheepishly.
“Remind me to not do tequila shooters with Phoenix again.” Jake laughed at that comment. We continued to make small talk mainly about Daisy and how spoilt she would currently be staying with the array of grandparents while Jake finished the pancakes. As he started to dish them up we moved to the small dining table and started eating. Jake stops half way through one and looks down.
“Peaches…” I falter at the nickname I only ever hear when talking to Jakes family, one that Jake himself hasn’t used since flight school, he used my call sign or my real name, unlike Jake, I liked being called by my call sign so much my family will call me Athena. “I cannot even begin to say how sorry I am for yesterday.”
“Which part Jake you said a lot yesterday.”
“You know which part..”
“Loki…” I say in a small voice.
“I should never have brought him let alone throw him in your face saying you didn’t train him well enough and I should not have blamed you for his death like that.”
“But, you were right.”
“What?” Jake says in a shocked panicked voice.
“It is my fault he didn’t come home, it should have been me that got shot down but instead it was him, I didn’t have his back.” Jake moved from his seat to kneel next to me moving me to face him as he grabs my cheek that has tears rolling down them.
“No.” He said in a stern voice “It was not your fault Y/N. I read the report, you were fighting off two of them you could not have done anything to help.”
“Then why do I feel like it is my fault.”
“Because you haven’t lost a wingman before Y/N and you are always the one making sure everyone else is coming home that now you have lost a wingman you don’t know what to feel, and it will not get better but it will get easier and I should have never used it against you when you are feeling like this, I can understand if you can’t forgive me but please know how sorry I am.”
“I forgive you Jake, I forgave you yesterday, I know the amount of stress that everyone is under at the moment, and I know we all say dumb stuff we don’t mean when we do that.” Jake pulled me into a tight hug which I returned.
“Now lets eat, Mav sent a text asking everyone to meet at the beach this afternoon for a team bonding exercise.” It brought a smile to my face and Jake groaned out an oh no.
A few hours later
“Dogfight football” I say loudly and Rooster looks at me with a huge grin. “Offence and defence at the same time, Mav is going to split the teams” I heard a collective groan from everyone.
“Team 1: Rooster, Hangman, Pheonix, Bob, Coyote, Payback, Fanboy and Athena, Team 2: Halo, Fitz, Omaha, Harvard, Yale, Iceman, Zeus and me.” I look at Mav with a perplexed look and spin to see uncle Ice and my dad walking down to meet the group, mum, Sarah and Daisy following close behind until she sees me and Jake standing next to each other. She runs into Jakes arms the two of them hugging before she requested to be handed to me to give me a hug.
“UNCLE JAVY!” She screamed in my ear, so I placed her down and she ran too Coyote who picked her up spinning her around in the air.
“And our referee, Hondo and Daisy will be helping him.” Everyone laughs as Hondo picks up Daisy and put her on his shoulders.
As an hour goes by dogfight footy has started to get very competitive between the squad and the teams had started to blur everyone just wanting to have fun. I look at Mav with a look that says we have been successful in creating a team between our squads. Daisy has retired to sit with Aunt Sarah and Mum as well as Penny who has come down from the bar to watch “the game” but we knew she was really just here to watch Maverick.
Tumblr media
We were caught up with the game when we heard a scream come from Daisy. The whole team immediately stops to look in the direction only to see Daisy being thrown over Jays shoulder with him sprinting towards the ocean, pretending to throw her in though being very cautious not too as she was still healing, standing next to Phoenix and Halo we all start to laugh when we see Rooster Fanboy and Jake share a look very similar to the one Ice, Dad and Mav were wearing.
“Jake, no! Halo Phe RUN!” I scream and we all take off in different directions Fanboy chasing Halo, Rooster chasing Phoenix and Jake taking off after me, Mum Aunt Sarah and Aunt Penny seemed to pick up all of them also taking off being chased by their respective partners. I heard all of them screaming as they got caught Jake still trying to catch me when I suddenly feel his arm around my waist and I get hoisted up over his shoulder. I look around to see all the females in the same position getting carried towards the water.
“Jake, let me go.”
“Sorry Peaches no can do”
“Jake I mean it put me down!”
“As you wish” he says and I can here the smirk in his face as he drops me in the water submerging my entire body. As I surface I see Halo Phoenix Mum Sarah and Penny all resurface as well all the boys wearing proud smirks, we share a look and hear a few of them mumble an oh no as we all spring to our feet and tackle the boys into the water wiping the smirks of their faces. As I tackle Jake he holds onto my waist dragging me down with him and doesn’t let go even after we surface.
“Feeling better Peaches.”
“I don’t know Hangman I think I am mad at you again.” I say saying using his callsign with a smirk on my face. “Take that back Peaches that is not my name to you.” I shake my head still wearing a smirk, when suddenly Jake loosen his grip on me and starts to tickle me, I start squirming and manage to break free sprinting to where my dad is standing with Ice screaming help as I run closer, for a split second they were concerned until they saw the smile on my face and Jake chasing after me. I am hiding on the middle of the and miss the look that they shared and all of a sudden Ice grabbed my ankle and dad grabbed me under my arms, and started swimming.
“No! Dad Uncle Ice please no!” They laugh as they then let me go launching me into the water. I surface to see Rooster, Phoenix, Jake, Mav, Ice and Dad laughing and clutching their stomachs.
“I hate all of you” I say with a serious face until I join them in the laughter. We all then headed up towards the beach to where our bags were. I started looking for my towel when I suddenly felt it wrap around my shoulders looking up to find Jake smiling down at me giving me a quick kiss to the top of my hair. We dried off and Penny decided to close the HardDeck so the we could have a “family” BBQ. After a few hours I was sitting speaking with Mum Aunt Sarah and Aunt Penny, watching Rooster Payback and Fanboy dote over Daisy with a smile on my face when I catch Jake looking at me whilst in conversation with Ice and Dad. I feel a tap on my shoulder and see Mav standing there signalling to have a chat in private.
“Uncle Mav, what’s up?”
“You have to pick the teams this week, just got a message from Cyclone the missions been moved up. I sigh looking down before looking back into the bar, where Daisy is now on Roosters shoulders while he plays piano and everyone is singing and laughing and my face drops to wear a sad look, what I didn’t notice was that Jake and my dad had seen my change in demeanour.
“They aren’t ready yet.” Mav nods.
“I know we are going to run the whole course Monday, you are gonna be up in the air to intercept them.” I nod in response, “come on lets go back in.”
“You go Uncle Mav, I will meet you back in there.” He nods and returns to the bar.
“You know I haven’t seen that look on your face since we told you Ice was sick.”
“Dad. I didn’t see you there.” I say wiping my cheek as I spin to where he standing. He sees this and drags me into a tight hug.
“What’s wrong sweetie.”
“The Mission, it has been moved up.” He nods moving next to me to look at the ocean, “I am guessing Uncle Ice told you how dangerous it is.”
“He did, and you know too so what is wrong you have flown missions like this before.”
“But not with my family. Cyclone has told me I need to pick a team from the members being posted here next to be a permanent squad.”
“The navy as grand and good as it is doesn’t care much for that does it.” I shake my head.
“I am not picking Jake, I cannot risk both of us being on that mission I cannot do that to Daisy, which leaves me with Rooster and Coyote, Rooster is my brother how can I do this to him, and to Carole and Goose. How can I do this to Maverick.”
“You don’t have a choice sweetie, and non of them will or would have blamed you for this decision. You need your wingman up there.” I nod, “Is there any other reason you are not picking Jake besides Daisy, from all I have heard he is the best pilot there besides you and Mav.”
“I can’t trust him up there Dad, I need someone that won’t do something stupid if something happens to me.”
“Nothing will happen to you.”
“Dad be realistic I know that everyone is saying that but when have we ever been unrealistic with each other, someone isn’t coming home from this, and I will not loose another wingman.”
“You are right doesn’t mean any of us are willing to believe it, we all know what you would do, but you have a family to come home to, and I am not just talking about me and your mum and aunts and uncles, Jake and Daisy need you too.”
“They don’t not as much as they think, look at them,” we turn to see them all laughing and having fun, “Daisy has her village just like I did with your squad, nothing bad will happen to her.”
“She needs you too Y/N, to her you are her mother.”
“But I am not, and when Jake finally settles down that person will take that role.”
“For someone so smart you can be so dumb sometimes you know that, maybe you do take after Ice a little he was like this with Sarah.”
“What do you mean?”
“You will work it out love. But for now lets make the most of the time before the mission, and get back in there before your mum send a search party.”
“Thank you dad I love you.”
“I love you to sweetie.” With that we walk inside and I walk up slipping beside Jake who throws his arm around my waist looking down at me with a look that asks if I am okay I just nod as we turn back to where Daisy is now on Bobs shoulders as they dance with Phoenix, Rooster still on the piano.
After a few more hours, Daisy begins to get tired so Jake and I head home, all the drama of yesterday forgotten and forgiven with the family filled day that we had.
The next morning, I hear my door crack open and hear a set of little feet start running toward my bed.
“Mama, Daddy cooked pancakes.”
“Did he baby, well best we go eat them before he eats all of them on us.” I say scooping her into my arms and walking toward the kitchen where Jake is putting pancakes on the table.
“Pancakes two days in a row, you sure you didn’t do something stupid again.” Jake rolls his eyes causing me to laugh as I set Daisy down and Jake moves a plate of pancakes infront of her. As I sit next to her and Jake takes his normal seat on the other side I see the look in his face wanting to ask what I was talking to my Dad about last night. As he goes to speak, I beat him to it.
“So I don’t know about Princess Daisy, but I think this would be a perfect movie day, what do you say.” Daisy nodded excitedly as she ate her pancakes.
“Well guess I should go pick out some movies.” Jake says with a smile. After we cleaned up breakfast all three of us moved to the couch to watch movies about 4 movies in and after dinner daisy started drifting off to sleep. Jake moves out from where I am curled up under his arm and picks Daisy up and moves her to her bedroom.
“I feel like we have had this conversation before but are you going to tell me what’s wrong.” I hear from behind the couch indicating Jake had returned.
“You will find out tomorrow when we get to work.” Jake nods and walks around the couch to stand in front of me, he picks me up walking towards my bedroom.
“What are you doing?”
“Bed time if the princess has to go to bed so do you.” With that he throws me on my bed and I squeal glaring at him and he lays down on the bed next to me, like muscle memory I curl into his side resting my head on his chest and he pulls me tighter and places a kiss on my head as I fall asleep.
It was now late in the day and we had been running course after course with still no one having flown it successfully within the needed time frame. I sigh as Rooster, Payback and Fanboy land.
“Mav this isn’t working. They need to be quicker.” He nods.
“I think it is time you go up there act as an enemy craft on the way to intercept.”
“Yes sir.” I move to my jet and run into Rooster and Hangman on my way. They give me a nod as I continue to the tarmac.
“Ma’am!” I turn to see Jake, “Be safe up there we are all getting tired.”
“Thank you Hangman.” I say with a bit of a wink. When I am in the air I finally catch up to Coyote Phoenix and Bob, when I here Bob panic as I come onto his radar.
“Blue Team, you have been spotted by an enemy aircraft.” I can hear them talk amongst themselves as they decide to continue with the course to the target, as they get to the target they drop their missile and miss the target as they pull up I get tone on Phoenix and Bob.
“Phoenix, Bob, that’s a kill, level out.”
“Copy Athena.” I hear Phoenix reply, I look to see Coyote still gaining altitude.
“Coyote, level wings….Coyote respond…..Oh my god he is in G-Lock.” I say with a panicked tone before moving my jet to try and get a lock on his plane, “come on give me tone.” I say as I see him losing altitude, I here my missile lock tone and scream his name and at the last second he pulls up and levels out next to Phoenix.
“That was close.”
“Yes it was Pheonix, alright enough for the day let’s head back” I say popping up in front of them. We are flying back when I suddenly feel my plan jolt and something hit the canopy.
“BIRDSTRIKE!”
JAKES POV
I feel my heart plummet as I hear Athena yell birdstrike. I look at Rooster as we listen to the radio.
“Right Engine is on fire, extinguishing now. Anyone else hit?” I hear her working through the process.
“We are clear Athena.”
“Great throttling up left engine is still spinning restarting it.”
“Athena you’re on fire don’t start…” I hear Bob yell with panic in his voice.
“Shit, extinguishing left engine, losing altitude.”
“Punch out Athena you cannot save it.” I hear Coyote yell and I feel like I am going to pass out when I feel Payback hand on my shoulder Fanboy doing the same to Rooster.
“Trying to restart engines.”
“Athena Punch Out. Eject. Eject.” Phoenix screams through the radio.
“Shit, Ejecting! Ejecting!”
“Coyote did you see a shoot?” I hear Bob ask panic evidence in his voice.
“No. I didn’t see a shoot. Send a rescue team control, Athena is down.”

Wondering if you please write where Jake "Hangman" Seresin and civilian shyreader are dating. The pilots and her best guy friend also a pilot (or navy seal or military) are playing truth or dare, like the pilots except her best friend dare her to sit on hangman lap, thinking he might ignore her or push her away but surprisingly to them he lets her and gives her lots of love and attention ♥️♥️♥️ just hardcore fluff
hope this is what you meant!
school just started so requests are going to take a little longer for me to get to. i’m sorry about that, hope you guys can be patient with me! ❤️

Can I Sit Here?
“Do it!” Your best friend says, his attempts of encouragement doing little to calm the swell
of anxiety in you. “He’s literally your boyfriend,” Phoenix says. “What’s the worst that could happen?”
“Loaded question,” You reply, taking another swig of your beer. Jake was sitting on the other side of the beach, talking to Rooster, Coyote, and Payback. You’re about to start chomping on your nails, nervousness enveloping your every sense. He’s beaming; you don’t want to ruin that by completing this stupid dare.
It’s days like these when you wish you hadn’t visited the Hard Deck that fateful Tuesday. Just two years ago, and if you had stopped yourself from going despite Penny’s nagging, you’d be fine.
You’re shaking. You’ve never been close with Coyote, Rooster, or Payback for that matter.  You preferred to stick to your little friendship bubble with Specks, Bob, Fanboy, and Phoenix.
“Wish me luck.” You whisper to the group, downing the rest of your drink. Specks gives you an encouraging pat on the back and a little push.
“Can I sit here?” You ask, making sure to speak into his head in case the answer is less than ideal. You’re prepared for the worst, voices in your head telling you to turn the other way, run into the ocean and never look back.
Surprisingly, Jake doesn’t even turn his head, pulling you into his lap without a second thought. He wraps his arms around you securely, placing his head on your shoulder (but only after pressing a gentle kiss into the back of your neck!).
You relax in his arms, and Specks sends you a cheeky thumbs up.

Bigger Than The Whole Sky
Tumblr media
Life never goes the way one wants, especially not when it comes to love.
When Brigham ‘Harvard’ Lennox doesn’t come home from a deployment, his wife is left to move on without him and work through her grief. Jake Seresin, who introduced the two, is there for her from the beginning, taking things a step further when she finds out there’s one more thing that Brigham left her.
Jake steps into a role he didn’t know he wanted, finding that the girl he’s known for years is rather quickly becoming the love he hadn’t been able to find.
Sometimes, even in what feels like the worst of times, happy endings do exist.

Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin x F!Reader
summary: jake is obsessed with you. you eat it up. you’re obsessed with his obsession. but also with him.
t/w: soft!jake, some cursing
"Get out of here, Bagman. You're giving me a headache."
The blonde aviator grabs at his chest. "God, I love it when you're mean to me." Those green eyes sparkle with mischief under the lights of the Hard Deck.
Jake 'Hangman' Seresin has been pining after you for months.
& you have been loving every second of it. Miramar's resident playboy has only had eyes for you. You haven't seen him spare a glance at any of the other ladies in the bar.
Believe me, they've been looking at him.
"Y/n, how long are you going to keep my boy at arm's length?" Coyote asks from the other side of the pool table. Jake saddles up next to him and feeds you the saddest pout he can muster.
"Yeah, y/n, how long?" Jake asks.
Your intention wasn't to drag this hard-to-get play out for so long. Truthfully, it's becoming hard not to give in to those strong arms. To not lean in when he invades your personal space, feeding you a smart ass comment.
Your shoulder comes up to your ear and falls back down. "Hard to say, Bagman."
"Let's play for it," he tells you. Jake saunters over to you, and leans against the pool table. Crossing his arms over his fit chest, he situates his mouth just outside your ear. "If I win, you've gotta give me a kiss, darlin'."
The way his hot breath falls across your ear causes goosebumps to appear down your arms. Jake notices, and a blonde brow raises.
"What are you? Twelve?" you antagonize.
"Oh, honey. I'm willing to try anything at this point."
"Rack 'em. Honey." You lightly shove him back, your hands reacting to the small second they were on his chest.
"If I win, you give it up," you send the man a sad look.
"Give what up?" he asks.
"All this pining'." Your hand gestures wildly around in the air.
For a moment, despair crosses over that handsome face. He recovers quickly. "Oh, I'm not worried."
Jake lets you break. Two stripes fall into the pocket. Jake comes up behind you before your next shot. His hand slides across your waist and he pulls you into his side.
Right as you pull back, Jake leans down. "Don't scratch."
The cueball follows your striped ball into the pocket.
"Damn," he murmurs. It takes a full 45 seconds to get your heart rate under control.
The jig is up once Jake get in control of the pool table. Not only is he the dagger squad's best dart player, he's got the best pool table on lock, too. There is no way he's going to take it easy on you.
Naturally, he doesn't.
"One more and Hangman gets a kiss," he smirks. He doesn't take his eyes off your as he pulls back and send the cue ball sailing.
The eight ball falls into it's intended pocket effortlessly. Followed right by the cue ball.
Shock falls across all your faces. Jake has never lost a game of pool. Ever.
Jake sets the cue stick down, and rounds the table. Standing toe-to-toe with you, he feeds you a delicious smirk.
"Darlin', I ain't gonna make you kiss me if you don't want to. Furthermore, I only want your kiss if its of your own volition." He tucks a strand of stray hair behind your ear.
Your eyes lock with his and the world stops. What a fucking gentleman.
Fisting the front of his shirt, you yank him down to your mouth. Jake relaxes into the kiss immediately and allows his hands to slide around your waist.
Jake takes control, changing the direction and deepening the kiss. Your hands move from his shirt to the nap of his neck, fingers knotting in his hair. His hair that’s gotten just a bit long.
Jake pulls back just a hair, his lips a breath away from yours. “Damn,” he mumbles, again.
“My own volition, huh?”
“I’m nothing if not a gentleman,” he winks. “A gentleman who is dying to kiss you again.”
You guide his lips back to yours.
“Kiss me, Hangman.”
master list.

Sneak Peek | Hangman x Reader
Summary: You spent so much time around the boys, they counted you as one of them. You were firmly stuck in the friend zone with Jake, so it was time to move on with a guy who could see past your flight suits. It's not immediately obvious to either of you that cranky Jake is actually jealous Jake.
Warnings: Fluff, language, mentioned smut, 18+
Length: 6000 words
Pairing: Jake "Hangman" Seresin x Female Reader
Happy birthday @beyondthesefourwalls!

"It's my turn to buy a round," you said, standing up from the table and grabbing the empty beer bottles before turning toward Jimmy and Penny at the bar.
"Thanks, Rodeo," Jake murmured, and you turned back briefly and smiled softly at him. His gaze slid down your body the same way it would with any other woman, the only difference was that he had started to notice just how many other guys were regularly checking you out, too. And he wasn't sure how he felt about that fact.
When you squeezed yourself between two stools at the bar to order four more beers, Bradley asked, "Who are you staring at, Hangman? Rodeo?"
Mickey laughed as Jake quickly shook his head and turned his attention back to his friends. "I just wanted to make sure she can manage carrying everything."
"I'm sure she's fine," Bradley replied with a laugh of his own. "I got a little nervous for a second there."
"Why?" Jake asked, his eyes slowly drifting back to you, watching as you slipped your credit card into the back pocket of your jeans.
"Because first of all," Bradley said as he smashed open a peanut on the table, "Rodeo is practically one of the guys. And second," he added, popping the peanut into his mouth and chewing, "it would be weird if you start looking at her like you do all the other random pieces of ass you take home with you. Even though she is cute."
"She's cute, for sure," Mickey piped in. "But once you've seen a girl throw up in the parking lot after a drunken karaoke night, the appeal kind of wears off."
Jake smiled as you headed back toward the table, because the drunken karaoke night was when he got to drive you home and carry you to your bed while you repeatedly tried to tell him you could walk by yourself.
"Oh, you know who else is cute?" Bradley asked just as you set four new beers on the table. "That redhead with the huge tits at the dartboard."
"Damn," Mickey groaned, and now you were looking in that direction, too. But Jake kept his eyes on you.
"Do we have to talk about this in front of Rodeo?" he asked, sipping his fresh beer and starting to wish Bradley and Mickey would wander off. "In front of a lady?"
Bradley snorted so hard, Jake was surprised his beer didn't shoot out of his nose. "A lady?" he asked as he looked at you and cuffed you on the arm. "Nice try, Hangman, but Rodeo doesn't count."
"Well, you don't count either," you told him, and Bradley tapped the neck of his bottle to yours. "And neither do the two of you." Your gaze met Mickey's before settling on Jake. "You know I don't mind when you guys talk about girls. I get it. You're all hot."
But your knee was rubbing against Jake's thigh at the tiny table, and for a brief flash, he thought maybe he wanted to count in your mind as a guy you could be into.
--------------------------
It was a strange dynamic, working with mostly a bunch of men all the time. They saw you in a flight suit once, and they never looked at you like you were a female ever again. And that was fine. It made your job easier in a lot of ways. There were fewer distractions, and you knew for a fact that they liked you for your personality. They wouldn't invite you to hang out all the time if they didn't.
But on nights like this, it did sting a little bit to watch the three of them tripping over themselves to go talk to the redhead who was clearly eating up the attention. You were essentially wearing the same outfit she was: jeans and a black shirt. And you thought you looked cute. And what exactly was wrong with your boobs? You looked down at your body and kind of shrugged. You didn't get it.
Natasha handed you a pool cue, and you sank a shot. You made up the excuse that you wanted to play so the guys wouldn't feel bad about abandoning you to go talk to girls, but Jake had been hesitant at first, so you shoved him along. That was a mistake, because you were reminded of how solid and muscular he was under his soft shirt.
The first few times you glanced his way, he was already looking back at you. If he were any other guy, you would have just asked him out by now, but you were so firmly in the friend zone with all of them that it was embarrassing. The rejection would be laughable.
So you put your head down and focused on the game and the chit chat around you. But after a while you got curious, and when you looked up again, Bradley and Mickey were walking back toward the table where your empty beer bottle sat. Jake had won. The redhead was running her fingernails through his hair. It was all over for the night.
You weren't jealous. You weren't. You just didn't understand why it couldn't be you. As you sank the eight ball, you said, "I'm beat. I'm going to head home."
"Me too. Want a lift?" Mickey asked, and you nodded, not sparing a single glance back at Jake.
Maybe you were the problem. Maybe you weren't sexy. You spent most of Sunday scrutinizing yourself in your bedroom mirror and going through all of your clothing. There really wasn't much of it since your closet was lined with uniforms and flight suits. And when you looked in the mirror, it wasn't like you could even tell what the problem was. You were just you, but it was starting to feel like you'd been playing around in this male-dominated world for so long, you were just blending in there.
"Fuck it," you muttered reaching for your phone. There was a text from Bradley detailing the pricing for tickets to a Padres game, which you desperately wanted to go to. It sounded fun. Then you realized the beer drinking and peanut eating would simply be moved to a different venue in which the guys would be looking at all the other women around you. Suddenly it didn't sound so fun.
There were also a handful of texts from Jake. He must have kicked his guest out early if he was asking how you were doing this morning. You sent back a short message before finding the app on your screen that had been dormant since you got stationed in San Diego last summer. Tinder. It was right there.
Nervously, you entered your login information, terrified that you'd just end up with a bunch of guys you saw on base as your best options. They would undoubtedly take one look at you and have the same reaction your male friends did. But you spent the rest of the day thinking about it. You looked, but you didn't sample. You found some guys who were surprisingly not in the Navy, but you didn't swipe. And maybe part of the reason you didn't was because Jake kept texting you all day long.
Monday was your tipping point. You were all ready to fly in your boots and flight suit when you ended up surrounded by the guys in the hangar. "We getting Padres tickets, Rodeo?" Bradley asked. "Day drinking at Petco Park?"
You nodded at him. "Sounds fun."
Then Mickey cut in as Jake walked over. "Hey, Hangman. How was our little redheaded friend?" he asked with a smirk, but Jake's expression stayed the same as his eyes met yours.
"Wouldn't know."
"Oof," Bradley said with a goading laugh. "What, you kicked her out without even talking to her afterwards?"
You swallowed and looked down at your boots as you thought about the guys on the dating app. Maybe a little change of scenery wouldn't hurt anything after all.
-----------------------------
"Can you just knock it the fuck off?" Jake snapped. "I didn't even spend the night with her." He watched you put your helmet on as you walked toward your jet. "And I don't like talking about this shit around Rodeo anymore."
"Alright," Bradley replied with a tiny smirk. "No need to get mad about it."
When Jake took to the air, you were all business, as usual. You and he flew well together, like you always did. But back on the ground at lunchtime, you barely spared a glance in his direction in the cafeteria. Instead, you were completely absorbed in something on your phone as you picked at your food.
"What's wrong?" he eventually asked, and you looked up at him like you were surprised he was still there.
"Nothing," you murmured, taking a drink before returning your attention to your phone. "Just working on something."
"On what?" he asked, voice almost as snippy as it had been earlier. He found he didn't like it when your attention wasn't focused on him, which was absolutely infuriating, because it's not like the two of you were anything.
"My Tinder profile," you replied smoothly as you licked your lips, and Jake thought he must have misheard. Since when were you looking for a guy?
"Tinder?"
"Mmhmm," you hummed. "I'm just trying to sort out which photo to use, because I like this one where I'm in my flight suit, but guys don't really tend to go for that sort of thing."
You turned your phone to show him, and Jake swallowed hard. It was a photo he had taken a few months ago. He remembered that day. Your sunglasses were hooked on the top of your suit, and your helmet was tucked under your arm, and your smile was infectious.
"I like that one," he told you softly.
But you just rolled your eyes and groaned. "But you don't count, now do you?"
Jake shifted uncomfortably in his seat. "Why are you on Tinder anyway?"
Now you laughed as you set your phone down. "Why do you think?"
He didn't want to think about it, even though he knew why. You were looking to hookup with someone. Or maybe it was even worse. Maybe you were looking for an actual boyfriend. Someone to spend all your time with. You'd be at the Hard Deck after work less frequently. You'd be going to the Padres game with some faceless idiot, and he'd be the one carrying you home after you overdid it at karaoke night. Worse yet, you could have your pick of any guy on that app who caught your eye, but Jake knew for a fact none of them were good enough for you.
"Rodeo," he grunted, unsure how to voice his concerns. You just tapped your screen a few times and then smiled at him as his heart clenched a little bit.
"I went with the photo from Reuben's wedding instead."
Jake ran his fingers through his hair. He didn't even have to ask. He also knew that photo well too. His voice was soft as he said, "Blue dress. Holding a martini. Hand on your hip." He didn't like the idea of a bunch of guys he didn't even know looking at you wearing something so pretty.
"That's the one! And now my bio is live on the app," you said as you tapped your screen one last time. "Wish me luck."
You stood with your tray and Jake told himself he would do no such thing.
---------------------------
"That photo must have done the trick," you mumbled the following day in the rec room on base as Natasha helped you sort through your matches.
"I'm sure it did," she replied in awe. "You look hot in it."
You wanted to believe her, but it didn't even matter right now, because the two of you were staring at a photo of a hot guy who had sent you a message. You gasped. "Is this for real?"
"Looks like it," she replied. "If you don't fuck him, I will. Happily."
"What are the two of you over here whispering about?" You looked up into Jake's smiling eyes and gave him a grin of your own.
"Rodeo is getting all the Tinder hotties," Natasha replied, and suddenly Jake's smile vanished. "Let me know if he sends you a dick pic."
"He better fucking not!" Jake growled as he tried to reach for your phone. "Show me what this asshole looks like so I know who to pound to dust if he sends you one." You rolled your eyes and held up your phone so he could see. "His name is Tony? And he's a dentist?"
"What's wrong with that?" you asked quickly.
Jake crossed his arms over his chest. "If you have to ask, then you don't want to know."
You scoffed and opened your messages. "You're being dramatic. And I don't get on you about who you decide to hook up with."
"So you're just trying to hook up with this asshole?" he asked, his lips curling in disgust.
Honestly, you weren't really sure. But he sounded nice in the messages he sent. "Would it really be so bad if I was?"
Jake scrutinized your face like he was in pain, and you had the craziest thought flash through your mind that perhaps he was jealous. But then the pinched lines on his forehead vanished, and his voice was completely calm as he said, "You do what you want, Rodeo. But don't come crying to me about it later."
"Fine," you told him as he walked away. And that's what spurred you to reply to Tony's message with a more flirtatious one of your own. You were allowed to hook up with him. You were allowed to go out on a date. Maybe you'd even eventually request a dick pic. Jake wasn't in charge of your Tinder profile or dating agenda.
A few short exchanges back and forth was all it took, and suddenly you had plans for Saturday night that didn't involve hanging with the guys at the Hard Deck for once. Tony was going to take you out to dinner, and you were already excited.
----------------------
"Where the hell is Rodeo?" Bradley asked as he returned to the table with three bottles of beer instead of four. "She's usually here by seven."
Jake rubbed his eyes with the heel of his hand. "She's not coming. She's on a date with some smug looking asshole named Tony."
"Good for her," Mickey piped up, earning a glare from Jake. "I hope she gets laid. You wanna grab Javy and play pool?"
With a groan, Jake dragged himself out of his seat and forced his body through the motions. He hit the cue ball with perfect precision, but meanwhile, all he could think about was some other guy's hands all over your body while he shoved his tongue down your throat. "Fuck," he growled, trying to fight the urge to text you. If you wanted him, you knew how to reach him.
Between shots, he glanced around the bar at all the other women, but he couldn't find a single one as pretty as you. He spent the rest of his night barely conversing with his friends while he hoped that your date was a complete flop. And when he left to head home alone, he caved and texted you to make sure you got back to your place safely.
That was over twelve hours ago. Jake still hadn't heard back from you. It was damn near noon on Sunday, and he was left assuming that you spent the night with Tinder Tony. When you finally texted him back, the response made him toss his phone aside.
Sorry, just seeing this now. Yes, I made it home safely. See you tomorrow.
Monday was worse. You were glued to your phone at every opportunity you got, and Jake could tell by the little smile on your face that you must be talking to that asshole.
"Rodeo, how was your hot date?" Bradley asked, bumping your helmet with his while he winked at Jake.
"Pretty good," you replied with a little laugh.
"You get laid?" Mickey asked obnoxiously, and you rolled your eyes before glancing at Jake. He was dying to know the answer to the question, but also terrified to hear it.
"Wouldn't you like to know," you replied, returning your attention to your phone. "Put it this way... I'm going out with him again for dinner on Wednesday."
"Who goes to dinner on a Wednesday?" Jake scoffed. "That's when we usually go to the bar! And what did you and Tinder Tommy even talk about the whole time? Dentures? Teeth?"
"No," you snapped at him. "He told me how pretty he thinks I am, and that he was nervous to meet me in person. And his name is Tony, not Tommy. So don't be rude when we stop by the bar after dinner on Wednesday."
"Can't wait to meet him," Jake grumbled, highly disappointed that your date had been even somewhat successful. And he still wasn't sure if you'd gone home with Tony. Or worse... if he'd gone home with you.
Jake had crashed in your bed with you once a few months ago when you hosted game night. Mickey, Nat and Bradley all passed out in your living room, so you'd taken him by the hand to your bed. Every time he thought about it, he could practically feel the warmth of your body next to his and your foot hooked over his ankle. The idea of someone else there engaging in pillowtalk or fucking you just right was way too much for him to handle, because he was starting to feel like he wanted to be that person.
------------------------
Okay, so Tony was a little boring. A lot boring, actually. And on Wednesday night at dinner, he actually did mention dentures, and you could practically hear Jake scoffing from the Hard Deck. But Tony was hot and nice and he paid for dinner. Could you really hope for more than that?
"So, you mentioned stopping at a Navy bar?" he asked as you walked back to his car. "I keep forgetting you're even in the Navy. It just doesn't seem like you."
Maybe you should have used the other photo for your dating profile since you'd had to remind him twice already that there were a lot of women in the military now. "Yeah. It's called the Hard Deck. I usually hang out there on Wednesdays, and I thought maybe my friends could meet you?"
"Sure," he replied, and he even played boring music on the way there. But when he walked you inside, he kissed your cheek, and that felt kind of nice until Jake was looking. You felt embarrassed and a little guilty when he scowled at you from the pool table, so you eased yourself away from Tony and took him by the hand instead.
"Hey, guys," you said cautiously as you approached the pool table. "This is Tony."
Jake's jaw was clenched tight as he reached out to shake hands with your date in a death grip, and you cringed as he said, "Nice to meet you, Tommy."
And it all went downhill from there. You had to correct him three times, even though you were sure he knew Tony's name. And even the other guys didn't really seem to mesh well with Tony. Bradley looked scandalized when he told them he didn't like beer or playing pool, and Mickey tried to make a dentist joke that just didn't land.
You wanted to crawl into your bed and not come back out for a week. You also kind of wanted to ask Jake what his problem was. Tony was a nice guy. His hand on your back felt nice, and his goodnight kiss at your front door was nice. There was even some tongue, and you didn't stop his roaming fingers. Maybe another date or two and you'd ask him to come in.
"Would you like to get dinner on Saturday night?" he asked as his lips grazed your neck. "At the Boathouse?"
You closed your eyes and leaned back, and the image of Jake took over. His lips were on your earlobe, and he was whispering your name as you led him to your room. His hands were settling on your hips and squeezing gently as you melted into his touch.
"What do you think?" Tony asked, and you were jarred back to reality by his voice.
You swallowed hard and nodded as you opened your door. "Saturday night sounds good," you said as you ducked inside. "See you then."
You couldn't have Jake. You just needed to get it through your head that he didn't want you like that.
------------------------------
Jake knew he was behaving poorly even as he was doing it. Tony looked annoyed by him, and you looked embarrassed, but he just kept calling him the wrong name and standing off to the side like a dick. He was actually the asshole. Not Tony. And he needed to apologize to you at work the next day.
He found you in the hangar, pacing back and forth as you played with the strap on your helmet. When you turned, he started to say, "Hey, Rodeo, I'm really-"
"I need your help," you blurted out when you saw him heading your way. "I need you to come shopping with me tomorrow after work, because I wore my only two dresses already, and everything else in my closet is ridiculous. And Tony is taking me to the Boathouse on Saturday, so I can't just throw something together and call it a day."
Jake ground his back teeth together. The Boathouse was nice. As in, he could think of at least three people he knew who got engaged there. How much money did dentists make anyway? He was full blown jealous now. He knew that. But you'd asked him for help, so of course he was going to do whatever you wanted. Your eager eyes were enough to make him agree on the spot.
"Where are we going shopping?" he asked softly.
You looked so relieved as you said, "The mall. I don't think it will take too long, and I can treat you to dinner as a thank you."
"No," he replied. "You don't owe me anything, Rodeo."
"Thanks, Jake," you whispered as you threw one arm around his neck and pulled him in for a hug. "I know I can trust you to tell me what looks good. Because you're a guy, and you know what guys like. I've been in such a rut, and I don't even know what looks nice on me anymore. But I trust your opinion."
He wrapped his arm around your waist and held you a little closer. If you trusted him, he wouldn't let you down. He never wanted to let you down. He would take you to the mall and tell you which outfits looked nice on you, even though he knew it would be all of them, and he would be cool about you dating Tony. "Sure, Rodeo. Anything you want."
When the time came, he was miserable. You seemed excited, bouncing on your feet in your jeans and sneakers as you collected dresses and cute little outfits to try on, but he knew none of this was really for him. You'd just be giving him a little sneak peak of what Tony would have his hands all over.
"How about this one?" you asked, holding up a red mini dress that made Jake's mouth dry up. Then you moved it in front of your body and looked down. "It's probably too much for me."
He wanted to tell you that you couldn't pull it off, but he knew the fucking thing was made for you. "Try it on and see," he said softly, so you added it to your pile. Then he followed you like a puppy dog to the fitting room, holding half of the dresses for you to try on. When you passed the lingerie section, Jake had to watch you grab a few lacy items. "Have you slept with Tinder Tommy yet?" he snapped when you picked up a black bra and added it to your arms.
You looked up at him with a soft pout. "Well, no. That's why I'm trying to buy some sexy stuff, you know? Just in case I want to take it there."
Jake had seen you in your bathing suit many, many times. You didn't need to be wearing anything made out of lace and silk to look sexy, but the sight of you in half of this shit would probably give Tony a damn heart attack. Then he realized as you led him along that he himself might not make it out of the fitting room alive.
"Just stand out here, okay?" you said softly, guiding him against the wall. He grunted in response and watched you line up everything you wanted to try on inside the fitting room before closing yourself inside. You kicked your shoes off, and then he watched you push your jeans down to your feet through the gap between the bottom of the door and the floor. You stepped out of them, and his imagination started to supply the rest.
You were completely naked now, he was sure of that fact, and you were only a few feet away from him, separated by a flimsy door. His head tipped back against the wall as his breathing grew a little deeper. Your toenails were painted bright green, and you were talking quietly to yourself as you stepped into a black dress and started to guide it up your legs.
"This isn't too bad," you muttered, and a few seconds later you were unlatching the door and pulling it open with an apprehensive look on your face. Jake's jaw dropped open as you stepped right up to him and asked, "What do you think?"
"Rodeo," he grunted, fisting his hands at his sides to keep them from touching you as you spun slowly in front of him. "Looks good."
You frowned a little more. "I was hoping for better than good," you replied, twirling away from him and back into the fitting room.
Jake's body was thrumming with desire as he watched that black fabric pool at your feet under the door. "It was better than good, Rodeo," he said, nearly choking on the words as you stepped to the side and bent to pick it up.
"I'll try the red one," you informed him, and he had to press his lips together, knowing what was coming next. This time it took you a little longer, and he watched your feet under the door as you turned in front of the mirror. "It's really short," you finally said as you opened the door again.
"Jesus Christ," Jake moaned softly. The thing fit you like a damn glove. Every curve and soft dip of your body was right there, begging to be touched. His palms were sweaty as he wiped them on his jeans, and then you spun, ending up just inches away from him again.
He couldn't speak, and maybe you took that as a bad sign. "It's too much," you said with a little laugh. "I know it's too much, but it was fun to try it on anyway. It made me feel sexy," you said with a little shrug, barely able to meet his eyes. "I think the black one might be better for dinner at the Boathouse? Or do you think this one?"
Jake snapped out of his daze and remembered why he was here, suddenly pissed that this little fashion show wasn't just for his own benefit. "Come on, Rodeo. Tinder Tommy? Really? You think he deserves this?" When you just kind of shrugged at him, he said, "Get the red one if you're just looking to get laid."
"Okay," you replied, your little pout back on your pretty lips.
He pushed away from the wall until he was nearly touching you. Practically snarling, he said, "Are you just looking to get laid?"
"Maybe," you said softly, looking at his neck. "He's actually into me, so maybe. I don't know, Jake. It's been a long time since a guy chose me, you know?" He opened his mouth to tell you that any guy in the world would choose you when you said, "I have one more dress."
Then he had to stand there and watch the red fabric hit your feet before you guided the tiniest little green dress up your calves. He was jealous. He was so jealous. And the fact that he'd had a whole fucking year to ask you out instead of fucking wasting his time was crashing down on him right now. You were going to wear one of these dresses to the Boathouse tomorrow, and Tony was going to take it off you. He was going to fuck you, and then someday you'd probably get married. Jake would be at your wedding sitting between Mickey and Bradley and making himself sick over this whole thing.
The door opened. You were stunning. You didn't even leave the fitting room doorway this time in that green dress that was hugging your tits and your waist and showing off so much leg that Jake thought he was going to black out. "I can tell by your face that it's not good," you said with a wince. "It's a little too low cut, so I couldn't imagine wearing it in front of Tony."
His voice came out low and rough as he said, "You're wearing it in front of me just fine."
"But I don't count, remember?" You closed and locked the door, and Jake was immediately leaning against it. Literally each dress was hotter than the one before it, and Jake didn't know how to articulate what he was feeling right now. How on earth did he end up so far in the friend zone that he couldn't claw his way out if he tried? What the fuck made Tinder Tony so special? Why were you looking around on the app anyway? He couldn't even pinpoint when it had happened, but you were never going to take him seriously, even if he knew he could be what you wanted.
The rustling of fabric and the sound of the zipper had him resting his forehead on the door. "Rodeo, Baby, you can't...buy one of these dresses. Not for Tony. Okay? Come on. He's not good enough for you."
"Oh." That was all you said. You just replied with one word, and Jake's blood was boiling. He wanted to dismantle the entire fitting room and take you back home and tell you that you could do a hell of a lot better than some lame ass dentist who didn't like beer or playing pool. But you'd just muttered one word, and he was dying to know if he could ever stand a chance at making you happy.
"Rodeo?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper. You unlocked the door and he stepped back a few inches so you could open it, expecting to see you in your jeans once again with the dress of your choosing in your hands. "Oh, fuck," he groaned, his heart hammering in his chest. "Absolutely not!"
Jake pushed you back further into the fitting room and managed to wrench his broad shoulders through the doorway before kicking the door closed. You were biting your lip, your eyes wide as his hands came to rest on your lace covered hips.
"Jake," you whispered as he shook his head at the sight of you in a lacy black bra and tiny underwear.
"What the hell are you thinking?" he groaned, fingers digging gently into your warm body as he listened to the little sound you made. "You're killing me here." Your hands came up to his wrists before you slid them up along his arms, and Jake took a step closer until his jeans were brushing against your bare belly. He would need to be removed from the mall in a body bag at this rate.
Then you whispered, "I like you. And maybe there's a chance that you like me, too? And maybe that's part of the reason I asked you to come here with me."
Jake swallowed hard as he leaned in, dizzy from the way you smelled so sweet and felt so perfect in his hands. "Dump him. Dump Tony." You whimpered at his words as he slid one hand down further, teasing the lace covering your ass at the same time his other hand went up to tug at the side of the bra. "Because this? This should be for me."
"Jake." Your voice was a needy whine as you scraped your fingernails along his shoulders and chest, trying to pull him closer. But he shook his head as he pushed you back harder against the wall, lips hovering over yours as you whispered his name.
He knew what he wanted. He'd known for a while, really, but now he was ready to take it. "I want to kiss you. But if I do, I'm not going to be able to go back, okay?" he asked, his voice a deep rumble as you wrapped your arms around his neck. "I won't go back to being Rodeo and Hangman, just friends. I will not do that. Not with you. Not when you count more than anyone else."
Your lips crashed against his, and Jake sighed in relief as he held you in his arms the way he'd been dying to for so long. The lingerie and all the little dresses were only for him. Your kisses and your smile and your fingers in his hair were for him, not Tony. He ran his hands down to your ass as you giggled and nipped at his lips.
"Pick a dress, Baby," he muttered between kisses. "And we'll get the lingerie, too."
"Okay," you replied with a smile before you took his bottom lip between yours, making him moan.
"Tomorrow night, I will take you out, and you can show me this little getup again if you want to."
You looked up at him with the prettiest smile he'd ever seen. "I want to."
---------------------------
You nudged Bradley with your elbow. "Hey, she's cute," you said, nodding toward the brunette across the aisle. "You guys should go talk to her." He and Mickey both leaned forward to look without any subtlety whatsoever, and you laughed.
"Maybe at the end of the inning," Bradley replied, manspreading so much in his seat at the Padres game that he kept bumping your leg and nudging your shoulder. But he was grinning, and you could already tell that he and Mickey were about to turn it into a competition to see who could get her phone number first.
But there was one key player missing from their game now, and you smiled as you saw Jake apologetically climbing over everyone else in your row before plopping down into the seat next to you and kissing your cheek with a smile. "The line was long as hell for your favorite beer," he said as he handed it to you. "Did I miss anything?"
You shook your head as Bradley said, "You're just in time to watch the real show, Hangman. Rodeo, I want you to time how long it takes before I get her number."
But you weren't really listening as Bradley and Mickey started to argue, and neither was Jake as he kissed your cheek again. You didn't feel like you were simply blending in, and you didn't feel like you were just one of the guys anymore. You were grinning and sipping your beer as Jake's lips met your ear and he asked, "Are you wearing that black set right now?"
"I'll let you find out later.

I’d love to see a jake seresin x secret wife au. The dagger squad doesn’t realize he’s married until Phoenix invites reader out to the bar with them! Thanks you’re the best!!
You're reminded just how little you know Natasha when she invites you out for drinks, and you end up at the bar adjacent to the naval base. You've been inside only once with Jake before, when you were still dating and he was going through training at top gun. Now he's a graduate, and the place brings back fond memories. You've chatted, of course, when she stops by for breakfast at the bakery you work for, but you've never discussed her career before.
"Hope you don't mind we're close to base," She grins, "My friends wanted to meet here, and I get free drinks 'cause the bartender likes me. They have this bell system to embarrass all the assholes here, and I think I ring it more than she does."
"I've been here before," You admit, tentatively grabbing her arm as she weaves through the crowd, "My husband and I came here once, a long time ago. I don't think the bartender was a woman, though."
"She just bought the place a few years ago," Natasha nods, sliding onto a stool at the bar, "Careful, don't put your phone on the bar."
You tuck the device safely away in your pocket as a brunette woman turns to you, a sweet smile on her face as she recognizes Natasha.
"Hey, Phe," She hums, and you don't have time to ask what the nickname means, "Brought a friend?"
"I'm Y/N," You introduce yourself, noting that they seem like close friends, "It's nice to meet you. I'm Penny."
You nod and beam at her when she offers you an identical bottle of beer to the one Natasha takes. You decline, though, ordering your usual instead. Jake's out with his friends tonight, but he's pledged to be a responsible drinker in case you need to be picked up from your girls' night.
"Can I get, uh," Natasha peers through the crowd, turning back when you assume she's found her target, "Five more?"
"Fanboy's got one already," Penny hums, taking four chilled bottles from beneath the counter, "You want help carrying them?"
"We're good!" You wrap one hand around two bottles, trusting Natasha to lead you towards her friends in the hectic crowd. You don't remember it being this busy when you'd come with Jake, maybe the new management really helped.
She treks you all the way over to a pool table along the wall, where a few men in jeans and t-shirts are huddled. You're taken by surprise, though you're not sure why. You'd automatically assumed her friends would be women, and you wonder if that's concerning. Possible internal bias aside, you smile at the men who stand to greet you.
"Hello," You wave, handing off beers to the two that meet you first,"I'm Y/N, you're Natasha's friends?"
"We are," A tall man grins, holding a hand out for you to shake now that it's not wrangling beers, "I'm Reuben. But you can call me Payback, if you want."
Natasha still has one of the beers in her hands, and you hear the man beside her, who she greets as Fanboy, mention something about the bathroom. Apparently you still have someone to meet.
You refocus on Reuben, "Payback," You tilt your head slightly to the side, "Is that a callsign? Are you a pilot?"
"We all are," The man who'd taken the other beer from you nods along with Payback, a burnt red mustache on his lip, "Natasha's is Phoenix. And I'm Rooster."
Your stomach drops.
"Wait, uh- Rooster? And- and Phoenix, and Payback," Your head spins slightly with recollections of Jake's crazy work stories, and you take a step back, "Are you- you're all stationed to this base?"
"Temporarily," Rooster frowns, "Hey, are you okay?"
"My husband-" You don't get the words out before he emerges from the bathroom, stopping dead in his tracks with a furrow in his brow that wrinkles his forehead.
"Darlin'?" He calls, just loud enough to be heard over the music.
"Jake?" You're equally incredulous, "I- these are the friends you're going out with?"
"Yeah, I-" He wanders closer, still at a general loss for words, "You know Phoenix?"
"Natasha gets breakfast at the bakery," You breathe, now that he's close enough to hear your dumbfounded murmur. You have an audience, but you don't care, not as Jake's confused expression melts into a sheepish smile.
"Well, small world. You look stunning tonight, honey."
"Thanks," You grin bashfully, keeping one hand on your drink and using the other to cup his cheek, tugging him down into a quick kiss. No matter how chaste it is, it gets a reaction.
"Oh," Fanboy gawps, "You're- her husband? You- Hangman, dude, you're married?"
"I am," Jake hums, ringing an arm around your waist and taking the beer from Natasha that she's too shock-stricken to hand to him. He pops the cap off on the edge of the pool table, bringing the fizzing mouth to his lips for a swig. He swallows, "Six years and counting."
"You're married to Hangman," Natasha- er, Phoenix repeats, "You married him?"
"Uh, I did," You laugh, twisting the ring on your finger.
"He never wears a ring," Rooster narrows his eyes at Jake accusatorily, "What, you're keeping her hidden away or something?"
"No," Jake scoffs, "It kept getting dirty when I was doing maintenance on my jet. I keep it on my dog tags, Bradshaw."
He brandishes the chain with both his ID and wedding band on it, and Rooster takes a swig of beer in response.
"How the hell was I supposed to know that, man? I don't stare at your chest in the locker room."
"Well you're missin' out," Jake drawls, turning to grin at you, "Ain't that right, honey?"
"Jake," You hiss, "Not here!'
"Oh, don't get all fussy. Most of these guys have seen my dick," He waves a dismissive hand in the air, nearly spilling his beer. You swear you hear someone mumble, 'unfortunately', but Jake drowns them out, "They don't care if we flirt. Hey, whaddya say we sharpen up those pool skills of yours?"
"Alright," You nod, letting him lead you over to the table, "Natasha, can you hold my drink?"
She takes it like it's her duty to protect you, even though your big strong husband has just bent you over the pool table. It takes you a few tries to be able to hit the ball at all with your clumsy grip on the cue, but when it finally cascades the colorful targets around the table, Jake whoops, landing a congratulatory smack to your ass that his friends groan at.
"Nice goin', darlin'. Gonna beat Bradshaw into the ground in no time."

All This Love
Jake 'Hangman' Seresin x Reader
Tumblr media
Summary: “Congratulations?” Rooster half-praises, half-questions, side-eying Jake, who stiffens just slightly, but finds himself relaxing when he looks back up at the grainy ultrasound. “Thanks,” he says, feeling his stomach flutter at the memory of the first time he saw it.
Warnings: not much in this one, unplanned pregnancy, some light smut, 18+ only!! <3
Tumblr media
Jake feels his pulse jump once, then twice as he walks through his front door. He’d already known you were here, not just because of your car parked out front, but because you’d barely left his company since he’d gotten the news. Still, the sound of you moving around his kitchen, and the smell of something heavenly wafting toward him makes his heart leap just a little in a way that is honestly unfamiliar to him.
Jake Hangman Seresin is not a ‘relationship’ guy. He hasn’t exactly been a one-night-stand guy either these past few years, but certainly he isn’t known for his commitment. Partly he could blame this on his schedule, his various and frequent deployments, moves and busyness, but he’d be lying if he didn’t admit that taking an endless string of women home was taking a toll on him.
Quietly, Jake hoped he’d meet someone, have a constant in his life to come home to, maybe have a few little mini-Jake’s running around too, but it also wasn’t really something he was actively seeking out. He knew being with him meant a lot of lonely nights, and he’d internalised the attitude that most women were not up for that.
And then he met you.
You’d laughed sweetly like you’d thought he was just kidding when he’d flirted with you, told him outright you’d expecting him to cancel on your first date, and then rambled about anything and everything for the next three hours as he happily listened.
You weren’t really his normal ‘type’, you weren’t overly affectionate with him off the bat, making your intentions known, you weren’t tall or bleached blonde or anything he was used to from the women who showed an interest in him, though that wasn’t to say he didn’t think you weren’t beautiful. You were a little awkward, and dorky and you’d told him you thought he was funny, which wasn’t really one of the things most of the women he dated tended to point out. Needless to say, Jake had quickly found it very easy, very natural to adore you.
He’d gotten three and a half months with you before his orders came in.
The two of you had grown close in that time, but you hadn’t really addressed or discussed what you were. He hadn’t really felt the need, or the pressure like he had in the past. He’d realised over the past few days that this might’ve been down to the fact that he hadn’t even really considered any other options besides the two of you eventually becoming ‘exclusive’. If Jake is completely honest, he’s been off the market since our first date.
Not until the imminent date of his deployment had he begun to take note of his rising anxiety, the complete opposite to the way he usually felt after informing a casual fling that he’d be going. With them, he didn’t expect more, he didn’t want to give them more either, but with you… Jake hasn’t been able to stop thinking about how much he’ll be able to contact you while he’s gone, if you’ll make time for him, even if you’ll send him those care packages so many of the guys he knows often received while on the carrier…
The idea that you saw his upcoming deployment as the official end of whatever this is you have going on haunted him, and Jake was determined to make clear that when he returned in fourteen months time, he still wanted to see you.
He toes off his boots as best he can with the large bouquet in the crook of his elbow, before padding down the hall toward where the delicious smell is coming from, finding you buzzing around his kitchen in a manner that forces him to stop dead in his tracks to appreciate the sight.
This is what Jake has been wanting, but it's not until this very moment he realises just how much. It isn’t even about you cooking for him, no, he just craves the domesticity of coming home to somebody who looks up from what they’re doing with an expression like his arrival is the new best part of their day.
“Jake! I didn’t hear you come in!” you say with a smile and a laugh. That wasn’t exactly unusual for you. You didn’t often hear many things, considering you were hard of hearing. You weren’t completely deaf, in quiet rooms when he was facing you, you could hear him enough, helped by lip reading, or if he spoke directly into your ear. However, it was still significant enough that Jake had downloaded an ASL learning app, partly to communicate better with you, but also so that he could see your overjoyed surprise whenever he correctly signed something very simple to you.
“These are for you,” he steps closer, holding out the large bouquet of marigolds and roses he’d stopped for on the way home, making sure his mouth isn’t at all obscured by them as he does. He hadn’t skimped when he’d bought them, requesting the biggest package the florist offered and paying double what he’d ever paid before for flowers. It was worth it though, especially when once you’ve processed what he’s said, your face lights up all over again and you let out a soft little gasp as you move to meet him.
“They’re beautiful!” you croon as you bring the flowers to your nose. Jake had only ever bought flowers for his mother, and for a few girls around Valentine’s Day. They were always roses. He’d never bothered to ask what their preferred flower of choice was. With you, though, you had inadvertently told him on your first date while lost in a story about a failed garden you’d tried growing and how you adored copper marigolds and peach roses, but that no man had ever bought either for you, including your last boyfriend who’d seemed to think flowers were lame and unnecessary. He’d filed that information away, but curses himself for not using it any sooner as you smile widely back up at him, and push the flowers aside so that you can wrap your arms around his neck and kiss him sweetly.
“Thank you! You didn’t have to!” you say in between pecks to his lips, and Jake wraps the arm still holding the bouquet around your back, in the hopes that maybe you’ll stay pushed up against him just a little longer. You do, giggling softly as you continue to deliver soft little kisses to his lips, Jake dutifully returning each one, becoming aware of his own laughter joining your own as he does.
You pull away to grin up at him, and Jake drops one last, final kiss to your lips before giving you a slight squeeze, his own smile growing as you stare up at him.
“Baby, the smoke alarm is going off,” he informs you, chortling when you jump away from him in surprise, and quickly return to the stove to remove the pan from the hob. Jake follows you, placing your flowers down on the counter, and moving over to where the alarm sits high on his wall, reaching up to tap the button in the centre that switches it off.
“Sorry! The good news though is that dinner isn’t ruined!” you tell him happily, turning back around to go digging through one of his other cupboards. You straighten again when you find a large pitcher, and he watches you mill about for a moment, filling it with water before moving to place the bouquet of flowers inside. He feels his chest swell with pride as you primp and preen the roses and marigolds, and pictures you two weeks from now, with more and more petals falling from the flowers with every passing day, but refusing to throw them away because they make you think of him. The swelling of pride begins to turn into a swell of dread, and Jake really, really wishes he wasn’t leaving you in the morning.
You turn back to him and smile.
“Why don’t you go clean up, and I’ll finish this?” you suggest, and Jake immediately pouts.
“Why don’t I just stay here and help you plate up?” he says instead, making you frown playfully and shake your head.
“Jake, you need to shower!” you scold lightly.
“I showered on base,” he shrugs, and pushes away from his counter to capture your waist and draw you near again.
“Jake… just let me do this for you… you leave tomorrow…” it’s your turn to pout. Jake’s heart makes a good effort to leap out of his chest and into yours.
“Exactly. I leave tomorrow, so just let me stay with you as long as I can,” he poses, and you soften, resting your hands on his forearms.
“Jake…” you sigh, and bite your lip a little. “What’re you gonna do for the next fourteen months, huh?” you question playfully, shaking your head.
“Wish I was plating up dinner with you.” he answers immediately, then feels his cheeks heat up a little. Your gaze drops from his face, but you’re smiling softly, and rubbing your thumbs over his skin in a soothing manner.
“Okay,” you relent, before reaching up to cup his cheeks tenderly. “Okay.”
Jake leans into your touch, closing his eyes as he memorises the feeling of you holding him. You remain in pleasant quiet as the two of you go about preparing for dinner, Jake setting the table as you portion out the salad you’ve made.
Jake refrains from insisting you sit side by side as you eat, because he knows you’d struggle to hear him if you did, but after dinner, he does insist that the dishes can wait, convincing you to come up and shower with him instead.
You’ve barely stepped inside the glass cubicle when he’s pulling you closer, lips reaching out for yours and you giggle as you kiss him under the full stream of the shower head, laughing properly when he pulls back to spit a mouthful of water sideways out his mouth like a cartoon character. He grins at having made you laugh, but crowds you up against the wall almost instantly after, his smile pressed back against yours.
“M’gonna miss you.” he says right by your ear, before slipping his mouth down to your neck, and immediately sucking a small mark there. He knows your opinion on hickeys, so he’ll make sure the rest are somewhere you can hide them. You seem to squirm in his hold, your hands dropping from around his neck to press against his chest, his abdomen, though he knows you aren’t pushing him away, simply wishing to see his face.
“I’ll miss you, too.” you say after a moment, watching the water drop from his eyelashes, before you wrap your arms around him, pulling him near once again and pressing your chest up against his in a delightful manner.
“Promise you’ll come see me when I get shore leave?” He’s never asked this question before, and his heart immediately jumps into his throat. Usually he’d wait around for shore leave to go bar hopping, pick up a girl or two and show them a good time while he could. This time however, all Jake can think about is how best he can maximise all his spare moments for the next fourteen months to make sure they’re spent with you.
“I promise,” you say with another giggle, and it makes Jake pull back to look down at you. He’s not sure what he wants to say, if anything at all, but a beat passes where the two of you simply watch one another. Carefully your hand rises, skims along his cheek, but ultimately continues upwards where you smooth back some of the hair hanging down over his forehead.
“By my count we’ve got just under twelve hours,” you say then, and he can tell you’re trying not to sound so sad. It makes his stomach flop about.
“No time to waste, then, huh?” He leans in and murmurs against your lips.
Miraculously, you make it back to his bedroom somehow, shower water replaced with sweat now as you both work to make the most of the short time you have left together.
You let out a heavy breath of air as you adjust yourself once more, hands pressing against his taut abs, feeling the way the muscles move and tighten under your palms and fingers as you bounce in his lap. Your thighs are burning, but that's not going to be enough to stop you from chasing down another high. Jake’s hands at your hips take some of the initiative out of your control though, his grip firm and deliberate as he helps you move for him, forcing you up and damn-near slamming you back down again, his hips flexing in time to make sure he’s fucking you as deep as he can.
Your sounds of pleasure are muted against his lips, swallowed by him as he kisses you hungrily, one hand shooting up to clutch at the back of your neck when you briefly break apart. With one hand helping you move now, he begins tilting his hips more and more, his legs bent at the knee behind you, powering his thrusts and completely taking you apart. He lets you break away from his mouth, but doesn’t move the hand on your neck, and through half-shut eyes, you can see him watching you intently, his jaw clenched as he takes you in. He slows down.
“You look so pretty riding me,” Jake’s voice is deeper and more gravelly than normal, and his words are punctuated by tiny grunts of exertion that make you mewl. “Gonna miss the way you feel around me,” he goes on, using his hold on you to grind up into you with each slow thrust. You gasp when his hand on your thigh pulls a little, widening your legs around him and making you take him even more.
“Fuck! Jake…!” you cry out weakly, doing your best to keep your momentum, but with this new positioning, you barely have enough strength to lift yourself from him. Jake doesn't seem to mind, groaning in approval and suddenly sitting up, twisting your still connected hips to spin you beneath him now, his hand hiking your leg up over his shoulder as you go.
You gasp again, your own hands clutching his shoulders as he begins fucking you impossibly deep, picking up his pace again as he hovers above you, one hand now in the mattress beside your head.
“Take me so well, sweetheart,” he grunts out, closing the distance between you to press his lips back to yours. You chase him when he pulls away again, whining in disapproval, but his lips dont go too far, as he falls to his forearms and really begins to fuck you.
“Gotta give it to you so good you’ll be stuck on me, huh? Won’t think about anyone but me while I’m gone?” he goes on, and all you can do is nod.
“You gonna cum?” he asks a little more coherently, and you nod, because the way he’s driving into you nearly has you toppling over already. “Yeah? Go on, let me feel you, want you to cum around me, honey.”
His words alone are enough to push you off the edge, more so when you feel him join you, and you arch up into him, curl your hips against his own ragged thrusts, desperate to keep him from pulling out halfway through. He doesn’t seem to be planning to this time, and you mewl and moan in delight at the feeling of him filling you up, the feeling of him dripping out of you when he gives you a few last firm thrusts.
Jake pants above you, the hand by your head slipping down to caress your cheek as you both take a moment to come down. He kisses you, long and deep and nearly enough to get you going again. You wait patiently when he pads off to his bathroom to find you a cloth, and you barely notice yourself dozing off until you wake sometime later.
The bed is empty, though the bedside lamp has remained on, and you sit up properly, rubbing your eyes.
“Jake?” you call out, but you don't see him in the bedroom or bathroom. Frowning, you scoot out of his bed and grab one of his old squad shirts, slipping it on as you move out of his bedroom in search of him.
“Jake?” you call out again, trailing your hand along the wall as you step softly down the stairs to the first floor. It doesn’t help that you can’t hear him, but your worries are belayed the moment you turn around the corner and into the kitchen, and you’re greeted with his bare back as he stands at the sink. He’d pulled some sweatpants on, but they’re hanging low on his hips, enough for you to see the little dimples at the base of his back, and you itch you wrap your arms around him again.
You try to be as quiet as you can as you move up behind him, relishing in the small jump of surprise he does when you trail your hands over his skin and around his front, pressing your cheek between his shoulder blades. You feel him chuckle, feel the deep reverberations through his chest as he does, before he’s pulling you by one arm around to his front instead, where your face now rests against his chest instead.
“I thought you’d fallen asleep.” he tells you, leaning down to absently press a kiss to your hair. You shrug, but peek over your shoulder to watch as he continues to wash dishes, moving with him when he has to move, loving the way he briefly wraps you up whenever he does so, as if he’s worried his twisting might scare you off.
“What are you doing?” you ask dumbly, even as he scrubs down the pan you’d used to cook dinner.
“I didn’t want you to have to wake up tomorrow and do the dishes.” He tells you quietly, like he was worried about admitting this to you, like it was something he should feel guilty about. You coo, and squeeze him a little tighter, just as another thought occurs to you. You’d meant to talk to him about it when he got home from work, but with all the messing around that had happened, you’d totally forgotten.
“Do you want me to drive you in tomorrow?” you ask, feeling the way he pauses. You look up at him after he stays quiet for another beat, and find him staring down at you oddly. Your eyes meeting seems to break him out of his reverie though, and he blinks rapidly a few times.
“You don’t mind? It’s an early start…” he tells you, trying to warn you off, but you see right through him. You can tell it means something to him, though you don’t know what, and a part of you wonders if he’d ever had a girlfriend drive him to base for a deployment before.
“I’m not going to see you for fourteen months, Jake, of course I don’t mind.” you say as if it's obvious. You watch him purse his lips, but smile softly.
“I’d like that.” he says at last, moving one arm to wrap around you permanently now, continuing his task one handed until you extract yourself from him to grab a drying cloth. He makes a sound you only feel briefly, but you shoot him an amused shake of your head and remind him that the faster the chore is done, the faster the two of you can go back to bed. He stops his complaining then, and when the sink is empty and the dishes all stacked away, he picks you up and carries you all the way upstairs again with your legs wrapped around his waist, keeping them there until you both fall asleep again.

Jake can’t stop looking back over his shoulder at you as he stands with the rest of Dagger, getting ready to board. You’re right by the front of the crowd of family that has gathered to say goodbye, which doesn’t make it any easier. If you’d disappeared amongst the people, he could fool himself into thinking you weren’t there, but as it is, he can see you clearly, and it’s eating him up.
Even Rooster can tell, watching and following his gaze every time Jake longingly glances back at you, his brown eyes trailing to the beautiful girl in the front of the crowd, occasionally conversing with the people around her, but mostly just eying the group of aviators with a sad little smile.
“You should say goodbye.” Rooster tells him quietly, eyeing up the officers ahead of them and correctly guessing that they would be about to board. Jake swallows, and pushes his sunglasses up his nose.
“We’ve already said goodbye.” He doesn’t mean to sound so snappy or cold, but he really didn’t want to think about leaving you anymore than necessary. Beside him, Rooster shuffles and shrugs.
“Say goodbye again.”
Jake stays quiet for a moment, before he turns to look at his wingman, and then at the line ahead. Quickly shifting his bag and stuffing it into the other man’s hands, Rooster only nods at him before Jake’s body is moving, easily pushing past the junior officers who step out of his way quickly. He barely takes note of the saultes he receives, because his eyes are set only on you, the way you watch him with a frown, but even as he gets right up to you, and you open your mouth to speak, he keeps moving, cupping your jaw and pressing a series of kisses against your lips.
When he pulls back you frown is gone, replaced with a lightness he hasn't seen since before he’d told you he’d be leaving.
“Will you wait for me?” he asks breathlessly, aware now that the carrier had begun boarding, and he needed to get back.
“What?” you ask with a slight laugh. Jake only leans in to kiss you again, and from somewhere behind him, he can hear a few servicemen whistle. You’re still giggling when he pulls back, but he digs into his uniform pockets and brings out his keys, pressing them into your hands.
“Wait for me.” he says again, waiting until you nod your assent before looking away from you. Through the crowd, he can hear someone, Rooster calling him, an edge of warning in his voice.
“I’ve got to go.” he tells you dumbly, and kisses you again.
“I know. Go! I’ll be here when you get back!” you assure him with a laugh, kissing him back but pushing him away at the same time. Jake grins upon hearing the words, and steps in to kiss you again, before finally dragging his body forcefully away from yours, and back to his team.
Phoenix is giving him a funny look that he ignores as he takes his bag back from Rooster with a silent nod of thanks. He receives a pat on the shoulder from the other man, who looks down his sunglasses at him thoughtfully. Jake sees his eyes trail off and he knows Rooster is looking at you again. He pats Jake’s shoulder once more, his lips tipping up teasingly.
“She’s cute,” Rooster tells him. Jake eyes him as he replaces his sunglasses.
“Yeah,” he says. “She is.”
Tumblr media
“Hey babygirl, it’s good to see you,” Jake can’t help his wide grin even as he stares at your somewhat blank, reserved expression. Something in his chest wobbles as you eventually give him a weak smile, and he nervously adjusts his camera.
“Hi, Jake.” You say. It only makes his stomach wobble too.
“Is the software working okay? I have captions?” he asks, double checking the program on his end to make sure for the fourth time that everyone is tip top. You nod.
“Yeah, yeah, everything is working fine. I even put my hearing aids in… I’ve missed your voice,” you tell him.
Your words go a small way to alleviate his anxiety, but it’s been four months since he’s communicated with you via more than just email, and he can’t help but listen to the voices in his head from long before he met you, telling him that you don’t want to wait for him any longer.
“I’m honoured, you hate wearing those,” he says with a stiff laugh. You smile a little wider, but don’t seem to relax.
“Too much noise,” you agree. A quiet beat passes between you and Jake steels himself for what he knows is to come. You both speak at exactly the same time.
“Listen, baby, I’m really sorry I haven’t been able to do this sooner, but–”
“–I’m pregnant.”
Jake freezes, and so do you.
“Oh, thank god,” he hears himself say outloud, his entire body sagging as the weight of what he’d thought you were about to say leaves his body entirely.
“That’s… that’s not what I was expecting…” all stress seems to have left your body too, and for the first time since your call connected, you too appear to be completely at ease. “I thought you were going to break up with me…” you tell him, making Jake start.
“I thought you were going to break up with me!” Jake exclaims, before quickly quientening his voice. “Christ you scared me,” he tells you, letting out a sigh of relief.
Your face is a mixture of amusement and bashfulness.
“You’re more scared of me breaking up with you, than me being pregnant?” you ask, and Jake finds himself nodding immediately.
“I wouldn’t say scared, per se…”
“Your own words, Jake,” you remind him, and he chuckles, but shrugs. You both pause for a moment as you take in the wealth of new information and relationship security you now bask in. Jake jumps then, and leans in closer to his screen.
“How far along are you?” he asks, unsure of what really to ask in this situation, it’s honestly not one he’d ever been in before, but he’s proud to discover his mind immediately has calibrated for it.
“I’m going to the doctor in the morning, but I’m guessing around four months,” you tell him with a slightly wry smile. Jake laughs.
“I should hope so,” Jake chortles, before turning serious again when he sees you only laugh weakly.
“How are you feeling, baby?” he asks, then quickly, for your sake, adds; “For the record, I want whatever you want, I just want it with you.”
Your face travels through several emotions, but you at last give him a watery little smile.
“I really thought you’d break up with me, I haven’t even thought about anything else,” you admit, and Jake feels something else in his chest wobble.
“Honey, unless you’re planning on breaking my heart right now, I’m not breaking up with you any time soon… or ever, if I’m honest… I’m sorry that’s not been clearer…” he tells you, feeling a slight lump in his throat at the very thought.
You were it for him, he thinks, he can’t imagine not coming home to you. He’d even considered throwing his medical on purpose the other day, just so he could wait for your email he knew was likely to come. Jake has never even considered that before, not even for family. A knock on the door makes his face fall, and he turns to glare at the ensign who pokes their head in.
“Liuetenant Seresin, sir, Captain Mitchell requires you on deck.”
Jake sighs, but nods grimly.
“Tell him I’ll be there in a moment.”
“Sir!”
Jake looks back at you, already smiling sadly.
“I’m sorry, sweetheart, I need to go,” he says tiredly. He’d wished he got more time to talk with you, but especially about this.
“It’s okay Jake, we’ll be fine,” you tell him. Jake can’t stop the quirk of his lips as he stares at you.
“‘We’ huh?” he asks teasingly, feeling something like excitement, or perhaps pure, sheer joy race through his veins. You cock your head but your arm moves, he can’t see where exactly, but he suspects your hand now rests against your belly.
“Yeah. We.”
Jake swallows thickly, and nods, unable to fight the smile that pulls at his lips.
“Okay, baby, okay,” he hears another knocking on his door and huffs. “Send me everything you can, I don’t know when I’ll get to call you again, okay? Send me everything.”
Tumblr media
Jake walks quietly alongside Dagger as they return to their ready room, listening to them discussing possible ‘new’ hand signs for each other to signal readiness for the manuevour they’d been working on not even twenty minutes ago, prior to landing. He checks back into the conversation long enough to watch the proposed sign that Payback suggests, and immediately begins shaking his head.
“That’s ‘math’ in sign language,” Jake tells him, earning a look from Phoenix.
“Since when do you know ASL?” she asks, not fully sounding accusatory, but certainly not shying away from that tone either. Jake looks up at her and opens his mouth, but it’s Bob who gets there before him.
“He’s been practising with me,” Bob informs her, making Phoenix only more curious. She turns back to Jake expectantly. Jake shifts on his feet as the group comes to a halt, clearly also wanting to know what this is about, and for a brief moment, he considers telling them to mind their damn business.
That thought passes though, his spite warmed into a quiet kind of glee at the mere thought of you, his chest tingling slightly under the picture he has tucked into his flight suit.
“My girlfriend is deaf,” he says at last with a small shrug. Phoenix stays eying him for a second, even more curiosity filling her gaze, but after a moment she relents. He knows she’ll have questions later, but for now seems to be content not to make him answer them in front of everyone.
“Huh.” she says, and with that the squad continues moving.
Eventually, Phoenix and Halo peel off to the women’s locker rooms, the boys moving on to theirs, Payback, Coyote, Fanboy and Bob making straight for the showers. Jake can’t shower yet, though, he has precious cargo to return to safety, so moves straight for his locker, peeling it and carefully removing the photograph from his breast. Using the wad of blu-tac he’d acquired a few weeks back, he gingerly sticks the image backup in its home when he’s not flying, making sure not to get any fingerprints on it as he does.
“That was a good exercise,” Rooster’s voice makes Jake almost jump out of his skin, and he turns to look over his shoulder, quickly shooting the other man a nod.
“Yeah,” he replies simply, his lips thinning into a line as Rooster steps closer, opening his own locker but inevitably glancing over at Jake’s in the process. Jake tenses up as he feels Bradshaw pause, but after only a few agonising seconds, Rooster is moving again.
“Congratulations?” Rooster half-praises, half-questions, side-eying Jake, who stiffens just slightly, but finds himself relaxing when he looks back up at the grainy ultrasound.
“Thanks,” he says, feeling his stomach flutter at the memory of the first time he saw it.
Jake reaches up and rapps the ultrasound fondly.
“Twenty-three weeks. She’s supposed to be the size of a peach, but hell if I know what I’m looking at,” Jake shrugs and rolls his eyes, even letting loose a small smile when Rooster leans over to get a closer look. After a moment he too pulls a face and they meet eyes.
“Yeah, looks like topography to me,” Rooster shrugs as well. Jake looks back to the scan thoughtfully.
“Oh. Yeah. There’s a mountain range…. Small valley…” Jake trails off as the showers seem to shut off in near-unisen.
He quickly shoots Rooster a steely-eyed stare, which thankfully the other man seems to understand the meaning of, because all too soon their conversation comes to an end and Jake shuts his locker door protectively.
Their veil of secrecy is shattered however, when Javy, dressed in only his towel, waltzes right up to Jake, opens his locker door again, places a kiss to the ultrasound, then carries right on as Jake quickly closes it behind him. Rooster shoots him a look, and before the others can make an appearance, Jake explains himself.
“Only Javy knows,” he grinds out, but can’t find himself too annoyed. Javy had immediately taken to his Uncle role, sending little gift packages to Jake's house for you to discover.
The ‘My Uncle Is Single’ onesie was particularly cute.
Tumblr media
Jake doesn’t even really have to push his way to the front of the line at the docks. Not only had Dagger made a path for him, but they were actively hauling at the collars of younger sailors, and from behind him he can hear various calls of ‘make way!’ and when one sailor protests a little too loudly, Phoenix saying ‘Hangman’s about to meet his kid for the first time, do you really want to get in the way of that?’. He makes a note to thank them later, but then he sees you, and he sees his baby, and all thoughts fly out of his brain.
He rushes up to you, gathering you both in one tight hug before you even seem to realise it’s him. But then he hears you laughing waterly, and he pulls his face back enough to plant a long, passionate kiss to your lips.
“Hey baby, hi!” he gushes cupping your cheek in his hand, before quickly extracting himself only a little, and focusing his attention on the bundle of excited squeals in your arms.
“Hi Princess, c’mere, I’ve been waiting so long to meet you!” Jake continues to talk before you can even get a word in edgewise. You laugh again, and shift the baby on your hip enough and Jake steps in again quickly relieving you of the weight. His daughter is immediately enraptured by the pins and shinies on his uniform, and she babbles talkatively up at him. Jake had shared his worries with you that she wouldn’t know him, recognise him, but all that is quickly abated when she stuffs a fist in her mouth and all but collapses against his chest.
His whole body fills with a warmth like he’s never known and he looks over at you.
“I think it’s too loud for her,” you say with a laugh, cuddling in closer to the other side of his chest. Jake looks between the two of you lovingly, adjusting his girl so he can show off some of the ASL he’d managed to learn in the last fourteen months.
Sorry, he signs carefully. Just – little – longer. Team – want – meet – you – both.
Your face lights up in recognition and your eyes get a little mistier. So – good – now! You sign back slowly for him, just as he feels several presences come to an anxious stop behind him.
“Bob helped,” he says, getsuring over at Bob, who steps forward with a short little wave.
“It’s nice to finally meet you, Ma’am,” he tells you, before his eyes shift to the baby in Jake’s arms. He tips his hat again at the girl who, as Jake turns, seems to be quietly inspecting the newcomers, drooling all over her tiny little hand. Bob does another little wave, more goofy this time, and she giggles, but turns her face inward briefly to Jake’s chest even more.
Jake uses his free arm to pull you in a little, and nods at his team.
“Baby, this is Dagger, that’s Bob,” he briefly pauses to show you Bob’s sign name, before he goes on to point out the others. “Phoenix, Rooster, Fanboy, Payback, and this is–” he gets cut off as Javy pushes his way to the front of the crowd.
“Uncle Javy!” he announces, balling you up in a tight hug. You laugh and nod.
“Thank you for all the gifts for her! She loves them!” you tell him, which only makes him smile wider, and puff his chest out some as he rounds on Jake and his daughter.
“Can I hold her now?” he asks, with his arms already out. Jake’s features drop into a friendly glare.
“No.” he says firmly, tugging the baby closer. He’s rewarded when she begins to fuss a little at all the new attention, and Jake quickly begins shushing and cooing at her, only for her to relax and fall quiet, her tiny fists now clutching desperately into his jacket.
“That’s right baby, daddy’s not gonna let Uncle Javy take you away from him.” He runs his hand comfortingly up and down her little back, snuggling her closer.
Javy rolls his eyes, but relents, pointing at Jake and you.
“Ya’ll got one week, then I’m crashing,” he tells you. Jake shakes his head, but you nod, looking up at him. You sign ‘babysitter?’ at him, then getsure at Dagger in general, and after he puts two and two together, he’s shaking his head.
“No. No way,” he says. You nod again and gesture back to the group.
“No,” he says.
“Yes.” you reply, Bob nodding quickly along with you. Jake rolls his eyes up at the sky, then back down at you. He looks over at where Rooster, Phoenix, Fanboy and Payback have all started cooing and making faces at his girl, making her giggle and kick her feet, and lets out a sigh.
“Fine. Maybe.”

Jakes POV
I couldn’t believe I was sitting here again, next too a hospital bed but this time it was my best friend not my daughter. I look at her face as she lays there cuts on her face and eyes closed the past 3 hours running through my head like a horror movie.
“No, i didn’t see a shoot, send a rescue team control, Athena is down.”
I felt my heart plummet at Coyotes words, they hadn’t seen a shoot, Athena was gone, i was broken out of my trance by Rooster punching the wall and Fanboy dragging him out tears streaming down both there faces.
“Return to base, recovery team has been deployed.”  I feel frozen still staring at the radio Payback taps me on the shoulder and gets me to stand and we head to the locker room where Rooster Fanboy Phoenix Bob and Coyote are all sitting on the benches tears streaming down their faces. I nearly fall over as Phoenix jumps up and runs to give me a hug which i return. We all take a seat sitting in silence for what felt like an hour before Harvard crashes through the door.
“They found her.” He says out of breath and all our heads shoot up to stare at him. “Guys, shes alive!”
We had never moved so quick across base to the hospital where we were greeted with Ice Sarah Penny Mav and Athenas parents all with tears. I stumble back into Rooster thinking she had taken a turn for the worst when Y/M/N came up and wrapped me in a hug.
“She is gonna be okay Jake, they said there is bruising but no breaks which is a miracle considering how late they think she open the parachute they just have to wait for her to wake up to test for a concussion.” I make the hug a little tighter at the news she is going to be okay.
“She got her shoot open” I whisper slightly relieved it wouldnt be the first time a pilot has gone down and the other pilots just hadnt seen it i felt Athenas mum nod before looking me in the eyes.
“Of course she did Jake but wouldnt be her if she hadnt scared us into thinking she hadnt”
“Family of Y/N Benjamin?” The doctor yells coming into the waiting room and we all turn to look at her.
“She has been moved to a room, and should be just fine, back up and flying I imagine with the next day or two. You can go and see her now.” Everyone nods following Athenas parents to the room where she was laying still unconscious. Once everyone saw her they started filing out most saying they would come back when she was awake to see her until it was just me and her parents.
“I will leave you two with her can you call me when she wakes up.” I didn’t let them respond before walking out of the room when I hear a voice behind me.
“Are you really going to leave?” I spin to see Y/M/N standing behind me.
“The doctor said only family was allowed to stay.”
“And what is it that you think you are Jake?”
“I didn’t want to intrude I know she must have scared both of you.”
She walks up to me placing a hand on my cheek.
“She did, but we didn’t listen to her go down, I really think she would like you to be there when she wakes up.”
“I can’t I need to pick up…”
“Daisy is fine she is with Amelia at the moment and Tom and Sarah are going to bring her here when she wakes up.”
“She nearly died.” I say in a whisper tears streaming down my face.
“But she didn’t Jake, she alright you heard the Doc she will be back flying in no time.”
“That is what scares me, it means she will still fly this mission, we might still lose her.” I lift my head to look at Y/M/N whose eyes are glistening with tears.
“I know sweetheart but we could lose any of you every time you get in those planes, its her job and she is stubborn like her father”
“How are you not scared that she might not come back.”
“I am terrified that she won’t, I always am and this mission has me more terrified than ever because I have 3 children who I love dearly flying it.” I tilt my head in confusion. I knew she was talking about Y/N and Rooster.
“I love you as a son as much as I love Bradley as a son. I am scared for you and him as well. Now go sit beside my daughter she will be a lot happier to see you when she wakes up than me and her dad.” I nod and head back to the room where Y/D/N is sitting and i move to the chair on the other side of the bed and grab her had squeezing it tightly.
I am broken out of my thoughts when I feel a squeeze in my hand and bolt upright to see Athenas eyes flutter open.
“Ouch” she whispers hoarsely and I let out a snort.
Y/N POV
“Trust you to be unconscious for 3 hours and wake up saying ouch.” Jake says with a small laugh under his breath
“Jake,”
“How you feeling Peaches?”
“Like I just fell out of the sky.” There was a laugh that comes from door way and I look over Jake to see Y/D/N and Ice.
“Sweetheart, you did fall out of the sky.” Y/D/N spoke all moving further into the room. “Dad, Uncle Ice where are Mom and Aunt Sarah?”
“They are in the cafeteria with Daisy and Maverick, they will be up shortly.” I nod and look at Jake who is still staring at me tears welling up in his eyes by the second. I gave his hand a quick squeeze.
“So how close was it?” I whisper, I could have sworn I heard Jake mumble ‘too close’ under his breath but Ice spoke louder.
“The other pilots couldn’t see your shoot, we all thought you were gone. When they found you, you were unconscious but obviously alive. Gave us all one hell of a scare.”
“I am sorry.”
“Don’t be sorry, we are all glad you are okay.” Dad says before I hear the sound of small footsteps enter the room.
“Mama!” Daisy yells and jumps onto the bed causing me to wince slightly as she wraps her arms around my ribs, confirming there was rising from the shoot.
“Daisy be careful.” Jake says as he goes to pull Daisy off.
“She is fine Jake,” He looks concerned so I grab his hand again, “Hey, I am okay, I promise.” He nods and squeezes my hand as Mum and Aunt Sarah walk further in the room also checking on how I am going. After about an hour the doctor came in and ran some final tests before telling me that I was going to be discharged. Everyone starts to file out of the room after giving me careful tight hugs until it is just myself, Jake and Daisy.
“Mama Thena, come home?” She says with a smile and eyes glistening with tears I bend down to meet her eye level Jake moving so his hand was in the missile of my shoulders .
“Yeah baby, we are going home.” Her smile becomes wider making me smile and pull her into a hug before releasing her and standing up.
“Come on Daisy, we need to get to the car so we can go home.” Jake says picking her up and placing his hand on the small of my back leading us towards the door of the room and to the reception desk I walk forward slightly to speak with the doctor.
“You are all clear to leave ma’am, all the paper work is finalised, just remember if you can try to stay out of the plane for a couple of days. Try your hardest to take it easy.”
“Thanks Doc, I will keep that in mind.” I say with a nod before walking to Jake explaining what the doctor had just said.
On the car ride home I sent a group text to the squad giving them an update on how I was going. Other than the occasional question from Daisy which we would both answer it was quiet, and I let out a small sigh as we pulled into the driveway. Jake gets out of the car and opens my door before moving to the back door to get Daisy who had fallen asleep not that long ago, as he picks her up and locks the car I move towards the house front door to unlock it. I open the door as Jake follows behind, tilting his head towards Daisy’s room, I follow them down the hallway stopping in front of my bedroom door as I watch Jake walk through Daisy’s door. I finally walk into my room and through to the bathroom and took of my shirt off, I turn to look in the mirror and look at the bruising around my ribs from the pull of the ejection I also inspect the bruising on my shoulder and cuts on my face. I hear a quiet knock on the door and grab one of Jakes old shirts that was hanging on the back of my door to cover up the bruising before opening the door to see Jake standing there.
“I just wanted to check on you before we went to bed.”
“I’m okay Jake you heard the doctor, just a few cuts and bruises, I didn’t even have a concussion.” Jakes nods, “Do you want to stay in here tonight?” He nods again and moves to what has quickly become his side of the bed, so quickly I don’t see the tears in his eyes. I turn the light off and head over to the bed, Jake rolls over to pull me into his chest but stops out of fear of hurting me. Instead of saying anything I grab his hand that is hovering over my waist and move closer into his chest.
“I am not so breakable Jake, I promise.”
“You nearly were today.” I hear him say with a sniff I grab his hand and hold it tightly as we both drift off to sleep. I woke up a few times through the night when I would accidentally knock my bruises, however I was lucky to not startle Jake who still had hold of me.
My alarm clock went off at 0530 as it does every morning and I felt Jake stir next to me as I sat up.
“What are you doing?” “Going to have a shower and get ready for work.” That seemed to grab Jakes attention as he sat upright.
“You are NOT going into work.”
“Yes Jake, I am I need to be there, Doc said I cannot fly but I can still train you guys from the classroom.” Jake didn’t respond and just got up from the bed and walked out. After getting ready I walked out to find Jake, Daisy and my Mom at the kitchen table. Jake looked up quickly and then turned away as soon as I made eye contact.
“Jake, I will meet you on base, I need to debrief with Cyclone and Warlock after yesterday.” I don’t give him time to answer as I walk out the door and too may car. As I arrive on base I head straight to Cyclones office where I see him Warlock and Mav waiting inside. I knock on the door and wait to hear cyclone telling me to come in.
“Athena, thank you for getting her early how are you after yesterday?”
“Fine, thank you sir, ready to be back in the air.” He nods.
“The mission has been moved up we are leaving tomorrow morning, you will need to select the teams once we are aboard.” I nod as I glance at Maverick who is also wearing a nervous look.
“Further, we are changing the mission parameters.”
“Sir, we can’t if we do our planes won’t stand a chance.”
“It is a risk.”
“Sir with all  due respect is it a risk you are willing to take you will loose 6 of your best pilots.”
“We are risking them if they cannot fly the mission with it’s current parameters.”
“Sir,,,”
“Athena, this is an order that is not up for debate. Dismissed.”
“Yes Sir.” I say as I turn to leave the room Mav following behind me. “Mav, they cannot change the parameters if they do no one will come home.”
“You heard them Athena, orders are orders.”
“Bullshit Mav when have you ever been one to follow orders.”
“I cannot disobey, if I do not even Ice would have the power to keep me from being discharged.”
“You may not be able to do anything Mav. But I sure as hell can.” I say with a smirk.
“I don’t like that look Athena.”
“Well Mav it is the only one I got.” With that I turn and walk away.
Jakes POV
We are all gathered in the class room waiting for Mav and Athena to arrive, chatting amongst ourselves, I know she thinks I am mad at her and partly I am her complete disregard for the fact that she nearly died yesterday has me on edge. Suddenly the class room doors open and Cyclone walks into the room all of us standing to attention as he does Warlock Mav and Hondo take a seat at the back of the class room. Cyclone nods for all of us to sit down and starts explaining that there are new mission parameters. We all look at each other nervously a few times butting in to ask why this was happening when suddenly the screens behind him started flashing that there was a plane in the air.
“Who the hell is that?” Cyclone says.
“Athena to Range Control, Entering point Alpha, confirm green range.” I look across at Rooster who is wearing the same shocked look as me then I look back at Mav who is wearing a grin of pride.
“Uhh Athena, Range Control, green range is confirmed, I don’t see you scheduled for an event today.”
“Well I am going anyway.” I look across at Coyote who is also smirking as I hear Phoenix whisper a quite nice under her breath. I look around and everyone except myself and Cyclone look happy about what she is doing. Then her voice breaks me out of my thoughts
“Setting time to target 2 mins 15 seconds.”
“2:15, that is impossible.” I hear Payback say in disbelief.
“Not when you fly like Athena.” I say at the same time as Maverick.
“Athena is inbound.” Suddenly the room is dead silent as we watch the screen, keeping a close eye on the timer and on the picture of the jet, I can hear her breathing heavily through the radio and grunting every now and then on the sharp turns probably as a result of the belt against her bruises. As the timer hits 30 seconds and she goes to pop up we all start moving forward on our chairs. I see Bob and Phoenix stand as she gets target lock, I start to get more nervous as I see she is pulling over 9gs on the pop up. With 2 seconds left the clock stop confirming a direct hit, with that we all jump out of our chairs, and we hear a few holy shits, I spin to see Maverick smiling and even warlock does a small fist pump.
“Maverick.” Cyclone says in a stern voice making all of us go silent and look at him, “Continue with the old mission parameters. I need to speak to Lieutenant Commander Benjamin.” Maverick stands and walks to the front and nods as Cyclone leaves the room.
“That can’t be good.” Coyote says to me, then Maverick starts splitting us into pairs to fly the course on old parameters, stating we only have 24hrs to get this right.
Y/N’s POV
I smile as I land my plane and jump down onto the tarmac, when I hear footsteps behind me.
“You are damn lucky that worked Athena.”
“I know, but he was going to change the parameters and no one including me would have come home. How made do you think Cyclone will be.”
“Made until he sees that you did somewhat have permission for that.” I smile and finally face Uncle Ice who is wearing a huge grin. We suddenly turn as we here Cyclone call out behind us.
“Well Athena, you are lucky you are team leader or I would have you up on charges, actually I may still put you up on charges for stealing a plane.” He yells before stopping and stuttering slightly, “I-Iceman, I apologise I didn’t see you there sir.”
“It’s quite alright Cyclone, but Athena did have permission to do that flight test.”
“Sir, whose permission?”
“Mine.”
“Yes sorry Sir, I didn’t know.” With that he turns to walk away.
“Thank you for having my back Uncle Ice.”
“You didn’t give me much choice sweetheart you stormed into my office and demanded a plane and that I told Cyclone I gave you permission, and I honestly think you are scaring then your mother and my wife combined.”
“Thank you anyway, the squad needed to see it, they need to be ready we leave tomorrow.”
“Do you know who you are selecting.”
“Yes sir I am going to tell them this afternoon, that way they have tonight to let it sink in.” Ice nods at my response.
We make our way into the classroom where we are greeted by Maverick wearing the biggest grin. “Don’t you smile Pete, I know damn well you gave her that idea.”
“I did no such thing, Sir.” Ice rolled his eyes at the response, “How did she get you to sign off?”
“Have you ever been on the end of her wrath?” Mav shakes his head “Well that is how, she is down right scary our girl.” Maverick. Hondo and I laugh at Ices response as Maverick begins to go into detail about how the pilots are going up in teams.
By the end of the day, every single pilot had successfully completed the course. Apparently my motivation flight worked. As they all start to gather into the classroom most of them give me a pat on the back or a hug congratulating me on my flight, after all while I may have convinced Ice to let me fly once after that I was confined to the class room on ‘doctors orders.’
“Please everyone take a seat.” I start as everyone takes a seat, “As you know we leave tomorrow at 0600 sharp, because of that I have made the choice to select the teams today in order for them to prepare. The two foxtrot teams will be Phoenix and Bob, Payback and Fanboy.”
“And your wingman?” Mav asks as I take a breath.
“Rooster.” I see Jake and Jays face drop slightly and I can tell they are disappointed. “Everyone is dismissed for the day we will see you tomorrow.” With that everyone stands up and leaves the room nodding as they do. 2 hours later I am walking through the door of the house where I am greeted with Jake on the couch slumped forward.
“Jake you okay?
“Why would you pick Rooster? I should be up there with you?”
“I couldn’t have you up there.”
“Why I am the best pilot there next to you.”
“I know, but what about Daisy if this mission were to fail with both of us on it. I can’t have you up there because I know that you will not leave me behind.”
“Of course I wouldn’t, but neither would any of the team.”
“Jake, if something goes wrong, Rooster will follow orders so will the others you wouldn’t and I cannot risk both of us not coming home to Daisy.”
“But you will risk you not coming home to her!” He yelled.
“YES JAKE!”
“WHY?!”
“…because I am replaceable to you and her.”

Hi! I've been thinking about this idea so if you like you can write about it🤗: reader ejects during a practice for the mission and has to spend the night at the infirmary just in case, worried trying to hide it hangman goes to see her and ends up staying (not dating yet, they go back and forth with silly fights but already have feelings for the other), reader tries to play it cool like it was nothing but maybe he tries to make her laugh to cheer her up if you want?
changed it up a little, forgive me 🥲 still stuck to the general idea, so hope you like it!!
Tumblr media
word count: 2k
warnings; mentions of ejections, dangerous situations, some swearing, slightly OOC hangman
Eject, Eject
You wish you weren’t here right now, but you also felt incredibly blessed to not have a WSO with you.
Right now, your plane was rapidly descending. Engine recovery measures were failing, and at this point you were too far in to give up.
“Left engine failure,” you speak, trying to keep a level tone. You knew that if you panicked, everybody else would.
Murmurs of instructions were being blasted in your ears through the comms, but none of them really hit until Maverick said “If you eject any later, you’ll die!”
You’re already almost to 500 feet, making ejection more dangerous than it would have been if you’d listened the first time.
That cleared your conscience enough to make you notice what a low altitude you were at.
The jet was screaming at you to pull up- and your co-workers were screaming at you to eject.
You finally got it in your head that there was no saving this plane, so you reached down to grasp the handles and pulled upwards.
You manage to open your eyes just in time to see the main event- your F-18 drop into the mountainside. The ringing in your ears tells you that it didn’t sound as cool as it looked.
You’re sure that your slightly limp body floating down from the sky missed the mark too.
The other pilots are celebrating from their huddle by the radio after Maverick confirms he saw a parachute.
You’re barely conscious after your landing. You're close enough to the ruins of your F-18 that the fumes are really starting to get to your head, and the wreckage doesn’t smell very good.
Your vision goes a little dark, then you hear the sounds of a sweet sweet rescue helicopter.
After that, you’re out.
There's sounds of beeping, a few monitors hooked up to you, and a whole lot of headache. Other than that, you feel great, Nothing broken, and hopefully nothing of note.
“They’re keeping you in for the night to monitor you,” Maverick says and you can’t help but groan.
They haven’t found anything wrong, what could change in a night?
Apparently lots, but that’s besides the point.
You’re passed out again for maybe fifteen minutes, the click of the door opening awakening you.
“Bagman,” you deadpan, and he gives a mock two finger salute.
“Dammit, you’re not dead. Thought I was going to slide into the number one spot.”
“Alive and well, thanks for your concern.”
Hangman is happy that Coyote isn’t present, or he’d expect some ‘Oh, he was concerned alright’ comment, exposing him in his lies. He walks over to one of the chairs by the springy hospital bed and happily takes a seat.
“What’s new?”
“These lovely tubes, the soothing beeps, and this military issued bed that’s actually a little comfortable.”
He grins at that last one, knowing the pain of springy bunk beds all too well. Honestly though, he’s just glad you’re alive, and he’s a man on a mission, a mission to get you out of here as soon as possible. Maverick didn’t tell him much, so he had no idea how long you’d be in the hospital.
“I don’t know, it looks a little small,”
“You say that as if the gymnastic mats we get are any bigger.” You scoff jokingly, and he grins again.
Normally, Hangman is all talk and it’s hard to enjoy being with someone like that. His mere -measly- little presence is enough to make you roll your eyes, especially when he says something that’s completely dicked. Now, he’s letting his ego deflate a little, and he’s convincing himself that it’s because he’s caught you in a moment of weakness. Hangman has already won, what more does he need to do?
Coyote would disagree.
He’s shaking his head a little, eyes closed.
“Ah man, you kill me. You really do.”
“Finally.”
“Still a dick, even on your deathbed.”
“We both know you’d be worse, Seresin.”
He can’t even argue, because he most definitely would be worse. He’s imagining what he’d do in that situation, and he’d probably be happy that he beat a fellow pilot to inevitable demise. If he can win at anything, he’ll take it.
He’s smiling, that stupid cocky little smile that he always does, but maybe less arrogance written on his face than usual. It’s replaced by a bit of joy.
“So, why’d you come?” You say, and his head starts to spin. He’s trying to think of excuses, but it doesn’t really work so he just settles on telling you the truth. “I don’t know, I was worried I guess.”
You roll your eyes at that one.
“I am honored that you in all your glory, Lieutenant, would worry about me.”
“You’re high ranking in my heart,” He says, and that makes your face go a little red. You blame it on the fact that you tried to hold the laughter in. He can’t help but laugh with you, partially at his own stupidity, and partially out of happiness. He did complete his ‘mission’ after all. You’re grinning, and clutching your chest while trying to regain your breath.
“Feeling better already?” He questions
“Definitely. Just being around you has cured me of all my ailments.”
“Laughter is the best medicine,”
You’re expecting him to leave at any moment now- thinking he came in just to push your buttons a little bit to your surprise, he stays. He keeps talking to
you- and it’s one of those rare cases where you actually enjoy talking to Jake.
Who knew that all it would take to make Hangman a pleasant presence is a near death experience?
“I was scared,” you admit, and Hangman’s eyes widened a little bit. You weren’t expecting to tell him that- you weren’t expecting to tell anyone that, but after a few hours of talking it just spilled out. It wasn’t unlike much of the other word vomit you’d shared. “It’d take one crazy son of a bitch not to be scared.” Jake says, and you smile meekly. It’s almost as if he’s admitting something himself.
The hospital staff practically has to kick him out because now he’s just talking to you about nothing in particular, and the weirdest part about it is he can’t stop- maybe he’s setting the scene, telling you about how your friends were worried (but he was completely cool, calm, and collected) when your engine failed. Maybe he’s telling you about the celebration when Mav announced the sight of a parachute- or he’s just telling you about how the rest of training went.
He’s being honest, telling you about how he felt throughout the day, but he leaves out his feelings on the engine malfunction.
It feels oddly vulnerable and new to him, and he’s not sure he’ll ever tell anyone how scared and helpless he felt.
When he leaves though, he leaves you with a wave and a small smile, and your heart rate begins to go a little faster- the monitor exposing you.
“Hey hey hey! You about gave me a heart attack yesterday,” Phoenix says, greeting you in all of your un-hospitalized glory. You give her a grin as the rest of your fellow pilots come up to say hi.
One person hangs back, Hangman.
He’s thinking he already talked to you enough. He spent hours in the hospital, and he’s hoping that you aren’t going to say anything. He’d be in for some mocking ‘jokes’ from Bradshaw if that were the case. His little charade is ongoing until you pop up next to him and make an off handed comment about his appearance, something like “Couldn’t get enough of me, huh?” and then the teasing begins.
He’s geared up, getting ready to fly the course for this super special mission when Coyote pops up next to him. Hangman is internally groaning. If anybody is going to say some ego-bruising, self-image shattering comment, it’s Coyote. Then he just stares at Jake- “Man, you’re whipped.”
Jake stares back incredulously. Whipped isn’t a word he would even think could be used to describe him, but he stays silent.
“Man, I knew it!” He says, and he’s hitting Jake on the back.
“No way in hell am I ‘whipped’” He says, adding in finger quotes for that extra bit of emphasis.
“You can tell yourself that all you want, Hang. We all know it’s true, and it’s a matter of time before you realize. Before she realizes.” Rooster adds, walking into the room.
“Shut up Bradshaw.”
Hangman rolls his eyes, finishes zipping up his flight suit, and leaves.
Maverick immediately knows something is up. Hangman’s usual instinct to fly fast hasn’t kicked in- he’s actually doing pretty well, as far as not “crashing” into walls goes. He’s about halfway through the course when it finally hits him, and he can’t control his flying as well as usual. His head is a bit cloudy, and he isn’t focusing on the track in his nav system.
He almost goes headfirst into one of the canyon walls, narrowly avoiding it by pulling up into “SAM territory”.
“Hangman, you’re dead.” He hears, and he curses. He knows that Maverick is going to scold him, and frankly, he isn’t in the mood. The worst part about it all though? Bradshaw did better than him.
“Why are you dead?”
“I don’t know, sir.” He says, answering semi-honestly. He’s not going to expose himself to the rest of the class, but he also isn’t entirely sure why he ‘died’.
“That’s not good enough. Why are you dead?”
“I pulled up to avoid hitting a wall.”
“Why were you going to hit the wall in the first place?”
“I don’t know, sir.”
Maverick just sighs, pinches the bridge of his nose and stops talking. The room is eerily silent until he tells the next pilots to get moving, and says “Seresin, come here.”
You can't make out what Maverick says, other than a whisper of “What’s got you so distracted, kid?”
You’re watching them intently when Hangman finally sits back down, and Maverick turns his attention back to the simulated course on screen.
When the last group of failures gets back, everyone’s gone in the air and Captain Mitchell is not having any of it.
“I suggest all of you get over whatever is distracting you and learn to fly the damn course! Dismissed.”
When you leave base, your head is pounding. Getting yelled at is never fun, and in light of recent events, it makes it worse. Not that you’re not used to yelling- The Navy is a whole lot of yelling. You, logically, know Maverick means well, but damn that was harsh, especially since the spiel was directed at Hangman.
He washes his face, and body, with cold water but the shower does little to ease his racing mind. Then, he gets the bright idea to get it out of his system in the form of a confession.
You hear the pounding on the door of your military-issued housing and you groan. The door opens with a loud screech, and you’re surprised to find Jake Seresin standing outside, hair still wet.
“Seresin, what can I do for you?” You say with a smile, and sure, if this had been 3 days earlier you definitely would have told home to go home, or get lost. The turn around shocked even you, all because of a hospital visit.
“Hear me out on this one, I really like you a lot and I think that’s why I came to the hospital. I was really scared, and I tried not to tell you about how I felt but…” At this point, you’re zoned out. His lips keep moving, and you keep staring at them. “When are you going to kiss me?” He hears, cutting through his rant. It takes you a moment to realize you’ve said it aloud, but you definitely notice when Jake's eyes are wide open, glued to your lips too.
It’s the first time in a long time that he’s felt nervous about kissing someone, so he’s glad when you tug the collar of his shirt and pull him towards you.
“Fina-fucking-ly” you say, and he laughs a little bit, chasing your lips again.

Red Death
You and Natasha, Phoenix, grew up next door to each other but only when you went to school then naval training did you become friends. Since then you have both made a name for yourselves. Characters – Phoenix, Reader, Hangman, Bob. Word Count – 5.2k (I think this might be my biggest fic yet)
‘Nat.’ You called out, your friend turned as her eyes searched for you before they pinpointed on you. She excused herself from the group of men she was talking with, they nodded before they focused on you. ‘What are you doing here?’ She asked whilst pulling you in for a quick hug. ‘Maverick messaged me.’ You informed her, both her eyebrows were quick to shot up. ‘Him personally?’ She quizzed, you nodded. ‘Yes ma’am.’ You commented, she pursed her lips. ‘Oh we must be in trouble.’ ‘Probably.’ You nudged her hip with yours, ‘I better get going he wants a meeting before hand.’ ‘Sure, I’ll see you later.’ Nat said, you nodded and you both gave each other a mock salute. ‘Who was that?’ Payback asked when Natasha arrived back. ‘That’s was Red Death.’ Natasha said, Bob looked up at her. ‘Red Death? The Red Death?’ Bob asked, Natasha nodded as she took in his shocked look. ‘You know her?’ He asked, Natasha nodded again. ‘She was a year ahead of me, but we became friends.’ She explained. ‘You love whipped or something Bob?’ Hangman asked, Bob shook his head. ‘No, I mean she’s the best at what she does.’ ‘We all are.’ Hangman commented, Bob shook his head. ‘No, she’s better than Maverick.’ ‘Come on, that’s impossible.’ Both Hangman and Rooster stated. ‘Wasn’t that long ago the pair of your thought that.’ Phoenix said, she gestured between Rooster and Hangman.
-
‘So where is the Red Death we’ve been hearing about?’ Payback asked, Maverick walked to the front of the classroom. ‘Red Death to range control, entering point Alpha, confirm.’ You voice came through the radio, they all lifted their heads and looked at the board. ‘She’ll be showing you how to do the mission.’ Maverick informed the class, Phoenix smiled and leaned back in her seat to get comfortable. ‘Why not you sir?’ Fanboy asked, Maverick smiled. ‘Red Death is the best at this, she’s done it three times before.’ He said, Natasha looked over her shoulder to give Hangman and Rooster a knowing smile. ‘Confirm.’ ‘Set time to two minutes fifteen seconds.’ You told them. ‘Two fifteen, that’s impossible.’ Payback said, Phoenix smiled widely and leaned back into her seat. The team continued to watch the jet icon swipe through the virtual mountains. As your time started when you passed through the marker, everyone sat in silence. Occasional glances were spared to other team members but they focussed back on you. The room grew tense as you came up to the climb, the flat before allowed you to gain speed. ‘Popping.’ ‘Three, two, one.’ Your jet suddenly climbed and cleared the top of the mountains. ‘You dropped down the other side, you nose aimed at the ground, Phoenix sat forward in he seat as they now watched you try and lock onto the larger. ‘Bombs away.’ You grunted out. They watched you climb again, hearing groaned come from you as your fought against the g-force. As the timer hit eight seconds, a few people stood up, Maverick and Simpson shared a look. The pair turned back and watched as you surpassed nine G’s. You’re heavy breathing was heard but the missiles connected wit the target. The timer stopped. ‘Bullseye.’ Fanboy exclaimed. ‘Holy shit.’ Bob said, Phoenix smiled up at him as he looked down. Maverick and Simpson watched as you levelled the jet out, your breathing had evened out and you were slowing down. ‘What was the time left?’ You questioned, as you focussed on the information before you as you landed safely. ‘Five seconds.’ Maverick informed you, you smiled widely and fist pumped the air, ‘Oh yeah baby.’ You cheered, ‘Seems like you’ve got a new record to bet Mav.’ You replied, he chuckled on the other end. ‘Head back home.’ ‘Yes sir.’ You said, and focused on coming back.
-
Hangman stopped in his tracks as he caught you walking over to Maverick just outside the base, your jet had been parked up where there was a few mechanics that walked around to check that everything was okay. He watched as you chucked the helmet and Maverick caught it with ease. You stripped as much as you could before you undid the zip to the flight suit, you dropped it down to your hips and wrapped it tightly. He took in the plain black t-shirt you sported underneath it, nothing different to anyone else but he couldn’t break his stare away from you. ‘You still coming to Hard Deck?’ Phoenix asked, he jumped slightly before he looked down to her. ‘Yeah.’ He said, hoping she would leave so he wasn’t caught watching you. ‘You know you could go and talk to her, she doesn’t bite.’ Phoenix commented, then tilted her head to the side, ‘At least not until you’ve asked.’ She added, his green eyes snapped back to your approaching form. ‘What do you want?’ He asked. ‘Making sure your still coming, we’ve got a rematch remember.’ She said as she elbowed his ribs, he nodded and twirled the toothpick around his mouth. ‘I’ll be there to bet you.’ He commented before he turned and walked away. You glanced at his retreating form as you pulled open the door, Phoenix smiled widely. ‘I had to pick the boys jaws off the floors.’ She commented, you chuckled. ‘I’ll have to meet them tomorrow.’ You said, she nodded before she tilted her head to the side. ‘Or you can come down to Hard Deck, have a beer with them.’ She suggested, you arched an eyebrow. ‘I’ll see, I need to meet with Admiral Simpson.’ You said, her face fell, ‘but maybe I’ll nip in after I’ve had a shower if it doesn’t take too long.’ You added, she smiled and nodded. ‘I’ll buy you a drink.’ She said, you nodded as you fist bumped her and walked opposite directions.
-
‘You look pleased.’ Phoenix said as she appeared at your side just as you thanked Penny and lifted your water up. ‘We’ll I’ve been asked to stay for a while.’ You told her, she smiled widely and you high fived each other. ‘Come on, I want to introduce you to the group.’ She wrapped her fingers around your wrist. ‘Oh so I get to meet the infamous squad?’ You quizzed, she nodded and let go of your wrist to drape her arm over your shoulders, pulling you in. ‘Guys I want to formally introduce you to Y/N, she’s going to be sticking around base for a week or two.’ Phoenix introduced you to the group of pilots you. ‘Pleasure to meet you all.’ You said, tipping your glass towards them. ‘Like wise.’ ‘Oh Y/N this is Bob, the eyes on the back of my head.’ Phoenix introduced you to the quiet man you had heard a lot about. He pushed his glass up his nose and smiled. ‘Nice to meet you.’ ‘If you don’t mind me asking, why such a short stay?’ Rooster asked. ‘You saw her flying.’ Bob said, Kuching on the sunflower seeds. ‘I’m more of a specialised one man show, I appear when people need help then disappear.’ You explained, they nodded before you heard a groan from Phoenix. ‘Well, well look at the beauty that decided to walk in.’ The tall smiling blonde said, his green eyes looked you up and down. You knew who he was instantly thanks to her letters and calls of annoyance about him. ‘Ah so this is the Bagman you were telling me about?’ You quizzed, looking to your side at Phoenix smiled widely and nodded. ‘You got it.’ She said, you turned back to him and looks him up and down in return as he chewed on the toothpick. ‘It’s Hangman.’ He corrected you, you arched your eyebrow. ‘Handsome and cocky just like you described.’ You said, Phoenix nodded ‘You talk about me?’ He asked his gaze moved to Phoenix, you titled your head to side. ‘Only when you appear in her nightmares.’ You retorted, a few of the group stood shocked as they tried to figure out Hangman’s reaction. ‘Still don’t know your name sweetheart.’ He said, pretending he hadn’t been watching you when ever you were in his line of sight. ‘Pretty sure you do since I’m the talk of the base.’ You replied, lifting your glass to your mouth, the cool liquid covered your lips. ‘But since your ego has taken over, it’s Red Death.’ You said, the group laughed as you and Hangman held eye contact that you didn’t back down from. ‘Major Y/L/N.’ The voice called and you straightened, everyone stopped what they were doing and you turned to the man, you stomach flipped when you saw the folder. ‘That’s me.’ You said, setting your glass down. You walked over to him and took the file out his hand, he straightened and held his hands behind his back. You flipped the file open and read the printed information, your jaw clenched as you looked at him. ‘When did this come in?’ You asked him, still scanning the information. ‘Ten minutes ago Major.’ He said, you shook your head. ‘Is there a time set?’ You asked him. ‘Tomorrow at sunrise.’ He said, you briefly closed your eyes and nodded. ‘Understood, you can go.’ You said, he nodded and saluted you before you returned it and watched him leave. You looked back down at the folder, the dozen pages suddenly felt like an encyclopaedia. You rolled it up and hit your palm before you to took a deep breath and stood taller. ‘Everything okay?’ Phoenix asked, you tucked the file underneath your arm and looked at her. ‘I need to leave.’ You told her, her brows dipped. ‘Y/N.’ She cautiously said and looked at the folder underneath your arm. ‘I’m good,’ you forced a smile, ‘just been called on a case.’ You stated, her face dropped. ‘Anything about us?’ Rooster asked, you looked over Phoenix’s shoulder and shook your head. ‘No, just me.’ ‘I’ll see you on the flip side.’ You mock saluted them before you turned and walked away, sending Penny a wave before you stepped outside. ‘You don’t seem confident about her ability to do this job.’ Payback commented, Phoenix shook her head. ‘I am confident about her.’ Phoenix admitted, before she sighed. ‘But it’s a suicide mission she’s been sent on.’ She informed the group, their jaws dropped and brows furrowed. ‘How do you know that?’ Hangman asked. ‘Red Death, five times was handed to death on a silver platter and five times she’s escaped death.’ Phoenix said, she tapped her nail against the side of her bottle, ‘Everyone thinks that death is scared of her.’ ‘It sounds like it.’ Bob said, Phoenix nodded. ‘It might be, but how many times can you escape it?’ Phoenix questioned.
- Picking your helmet up, you slid your fingers over the decals. The stickers of the red skulls on either side, ones you had earned pretty quickly throughout flight school, exhaling you leaned backwards. Your back rested against the metal lockers, your knee bounced up and down, going over the plan in your head again. A knock at the door sounded and the heavy boots entered the room. ‘Sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt you.’ Hangman said, you cracked open an eye before you shut it again. ‘You’re not.’ You spoke up, you both fell into silence again as you recited the mission. You opened your eyes with a sigh and leaned forward, the flight suit was tight around your shoulders. Hangman moved from the door and sat across from you, your knees nearly touched as you focussed on your boots. ‘Is Phoenix right?’ He asked, you lifted your gaze to him, meeting the glistening green eyes. ‘About what?’ You asked. ‘That it’s a suicide mission.’ He said, you scoffed and sat up as you nodded. ‘Is she ever wrong?’ You asked him, he shook his head. ‘Are you allowed to say where?’ He quizzed, you shook your head. ‘No can do.’ ‘How long have you been a major?’ He asked. ‘Five years now, five long years.’ You sighed, he looked you apologetically as his lips thinned. ‘When did you first come Top Gun?’ He quizzed, you closed an eye as you tilted your head back. ‘Seven years ago, the year before Nat and you all came.’ ‘We never saw you.’ He said, you nodded. ‘I was put on missions like this one pretty quickly.’ You explained, he pursed his lips and nodded but the small watch beeped on your wrist. ‘You have more questions on your mind.’ You pointed out, he nodded. ‘They can wait till your back.’ He said, you gave him a small smile. ‘I’ve got ten minutes before I leave, you can walk me.’ You informed him, not agreeing that you’d see him again but he nodded and waited for you to stand up. ‘Why don’t you tell people your a Major?’ He asked, you opened the door. ‘Why should I?’ You retorted. ‘Do you not want people to know that?’ Hangman quizzed, you looked up at him. ‘The people that need to know, know.’ You replied. ‘But it’d come with a lot of benefits.’ He stated, you pursed your lips and nodded. ‘Also a lot of downsides, especially from first year students that think they have a shot.’ You corrected him. ‘I learned when I received the title to keep it my own, plus seeing the look on peoples faces when they find out is still exciting.’ You commented, arching an eyebrow as you looked at him, a chuckle escaped his lips. ‘Now I want to ask you a question.’ You said, he nodded. ‘Go ahead buttercup.’ He said, you narrowed you eyes at the nickname. ‘Why are you lingering around the base before five? I know you aren’t called in till nine.’ You said, he shrugged his shoulders. ‘Maybe I wanted to see Red Death in action again.’ He stated.
- You climbed the steps and got into your seat, you made sure you were comfortable. You lifted the headphones and set them on your head, clicking everything into place. The window came down and the seal joined, locking you in the jet.   ‘Red Death asking for lift off.’ Your voice came through the radio. Hangman was pretty sure he heard Phoenix hold her breath, selfishly hoping your flight gets cancelled and you aren’t flung into the danger zone. ‘Lift off granted.’ ‘Safe flights.’ Came through, Hangman saw you nodded your head. You lifted you left hand, curled your fingers but extended your pinky and thumb out as you shook them. You then turned round, flipped lifted you air up and flipped your visitor down before you speed off. Hangman watched your jet until you were invisible.
- ‘Mav?’ Phoenix asked, the older pilot looked distraught and her stomach dropped. ‘What’s happened?’ He looked at the others. ‘They can stay.’ She said, the group gathered around her, waiting. ‘We lost Red Death’s location and all communication with her.’ Maverick stated, Phoenix lowered her head and she lowered herself. ‘When?’ She asked. ‘This morning.’ He said. ‘Any rescue mission planned?’ Rooster asked, Maverick glanced at him over Phoenix’s shoulder. ‘How long until it’s announced?’ Phoenix asked, rolling her shoulders as the teams gaze landed on her back. ‘Between forty eight and seventy two.’ He said, Phoenix clenched her jaw and nodded. ‘Understood sir.’ She said. ‘I also believe that if Red Death fails to return you are the sole beneficiary, what belongs to her will be yours.’ He said, Phoenix clenched her jaw but nodded. ‘Yes sir, it’s what we discussed.’ She replied. ‘Very well.’ He said before he walked away, Phoenix’s shoulders slumped and she inhaled deeply. ‘Why aren’t you asking for a search party?’ Hangman quizzed, his hand clenched secretly behind his back. ‘She… Y/N doesn’t want anyone to search for her body if she goes MIA.’ Phoenix informed the group. ‘Why not?’ Fanboy asked, she lowered her head. ‘She recons the places before teams go in, if she’s MIA it means the place isn’t safe for anyone else.’ She explained.
- ‘We have an unidentified aircraft approaching.’ An officer said as they looked at the radar, the small dot moved quicker by the second. ‘This is Red Death, you’ll better move or you’ll get squished.’ You voice came through, Maverick lifted his head and looked at Simpson. ‘Red Death?’ Simpson asked. ‘The one and only.’ ‘I need permission to land before I crash sir.’ You grunted out. ‘Permission granted.’ He quickly said. ‘I better go tell Phoenix.’ Maverick said, Simpson nodded. ‘Tell the team Mav.’ He informed him.
- ‘What I’d do to get the welcome back party?’ You called out to the group, as the top of the beat up jet opened. ‘You gave us a heart attack.’ Natasha called, you carefully pulled yourself out the cockpit, your sore muscles, dislocated shoulder and more than likely broken ribs protested. ‘I did my job.’ ‘You good?’ She asked, looking you over. You forced a smile on before you nodded. ‘All good, I’m thinking Hard Deck in an hour, let me debrief them.’ You suggested, Natasha smiled and nodded. She hesitated in her spot but looked at Hangman, she gave you another nod before she walked away. As she turned she sent Hangman a look, he nodded his head and kept his arms clasped at his back. ‘Your back.’ Hangman greeted you, you exhaled heavily through your nose. ‘Oh yeah… escaped deaths grip once again.’ You held your semi good hand up, fingers extended like your call sign before you left. ‘But I need to get checked out before I celebrate.’ You stated, his eyes looked over you and took in the way you held your right arm at an odd angle and the cut that had been trickling blood down your face, that had dried on your way back. ‘Will you manage?’ He asked, you nodded and went to step before you stopped. ‘No.’ You corrected yourself, he quickly crossed to your side and delicately wrapped a hand around your ribs. ‘Not there.’ You hissed, you reached up and moved your hand down to your waist. ‘I’ve busted my ribs.’ You explained, his fingers dug hard enough into your hip to support you.
- ‘Don’t you have anyone that would worry about you? Husband? Boyfriend?’ Hangman asked, you tilted your head back to look at him. ‘Is this your way of asking me out, Seresin?’ You teased, he shook his head. ‘I would’ve fought them off.’ He said, you saw his cocky self again but as you laughed, it was quick to fad with your hiss of pain. ‘No, all by my own some.’ You informed him, you hunched over to the side to ease your pain. ‘We’ll I mean I do have Nat, but she’s understands.’ You told him. You tried to slid off the edge of the medical bed but the pain down to your side caused you to hiss. He was quickly in front of you, warm hands on your cold arms or rather arm since your left was in a sling. ‘You’re freezing.’ He stated, his hand carefully rubbed up and down your skin. ‘Well all my hoodies are back at the base.’ You informed him, his brows furrowed. ‘Can you shimmy forward?’ He asked, you nodded. You carefully moved forward, the thin sheet that covered the bed stuck to the underside of your legs, you had maybe moved forward an inch before Hangman stopped you. He leaned into you, the warmth was quick to spread over your front as he grabbed the blanket behind you. He was quick to drape washed out blue blanket over your shoulders. ‘What’s going on in that head of yours Seresin?’ You quizzed, seeing the odd emotion flicker around his eyes as you brought your good hand out to hold the blanket shut together. ‘I’m going to be honest here and I don’t want you to laugh or kick me in the balls.’ He said, you looked at him and your stomach flipped. ‘Okay.’ You agreed. ‘I like you.’ He said, his brows furrowed like he wasn’t so sure. ‘I like you too.’ You replied. ‘No, I think I might be falling in love with you.’ He admitted, and immediately regretted it when your entire body tensed up. ‘Stop.’ You quickly said, holding up your wrist that was only bruised. ‘Please don’t go any further.’ You begged him, he nodded. ‘I can’t let emotions get involved with this, I’m a dead man walking.’ You said, repeating the words your superiors used, his brows furrowed. ‘I signed a contract about seven years ago now, the higher ups, people in Washington noticed my skills and I signed my life away.’ You explained to him, your brows furrowed as you saw the hurt cross his face. ‘I am at their beck and call for whenever they need someone to do a dangerous recon that could be a suicide.’ You added. ‘I am glad I got to meet you Lieutenant Seresin, but this can unfortunately can’t go any further than friends.’ You gave him a small smile which he reluctantly returned. ‘Major Y/L/N.’ The deep voice came, you immediately sat up straighter ignoring the pain in your body as Hangman took a step back, glad to put some distance between the pair of you. ‘Yes sir.’ ‘Is now a good time to debrief?’ He asked, you glanced at Hangman before you nodded. ‘Yes sir.’ ‘I’ll speak to you later Lieutenant Seresin.’ You told him, he nodded and lifted his arm to salute you, you returned it.
- A chorus of cheers sounded when you walked through the doors, you plastered on a smile. ‘Glad your back in one piece.’ Penny said from behind the bar, you looked at her and smiled widely. ‘Wouldn’t have it any other way.’ You said. ‘Well enjoy your night.’ ‘Penny?’ You called out, she twisted to look over her shoulder. ‘Yeah.’ ‘If anyone buys me drinks, can you just make it a water? They’ve put me on painkillers.’ You explained, she smiled and nodded. ‘Of course.’ She replied, you gave a her a wide smile before you walked over to the group. Payback and Fanboy cheered again when they saw you, which widened your smile before greeted everyone. You made eye contact with Jake and nodded, he returned it before he turned back to Bob and stole the pool cue from his hands. You looked at Phoenix and smiled, she gave you a thumbs up and you nodded.
- ‘What’s the matter?’ Phoenix questioned, her brows furrowed as she lowered into the booth across from you. ‘Don’t tell me their sending you on another one.’ She sounded panicked, you quickly shook your head. ‘No.’ ‘Then why do you look like, I don’t know your worlds been flipped upside down?’ She quizzed, you rubbed your lips together. ‘They’ve offered me a teaching job.’ You admitted, telling her only a brief part of the conversation that you had a fortnight ago and had kept it quiet. ‘Oh, I thought you had a love hate relationship with the job.’ Phoenix said, trying to tease you but you didn’t react. ‘I do.’ You sighed. ‘Then why are you thinking about accepting it?’ She quizzed, you shook your head as you lowered it. ‘It was bad Natasha, I can’t even say anything because it’s confidential,’ you ran your hands over you face, glad that both of them were free now, ‘but both my engines were blown, I ejected but that got stuck then I, I, landed in the middle of combat Nat, I shouldn’t be alive.’ You finished, she was quick to move into the space next to you. ‘So what stopping you from taking the job?’ She asked, you shrugged your shoulders, she looked at you then the small clog clicked into the right place. ‘It’s not the job, is it?’ She asked. ‘It’s Hangman.’ Phoenix added, you shook your head. ‘No.’ You said but your eyes flickered to him as he teased Bob over something. ‘You are such a terrible liar.’ She commented, you scoffed. ‘Okay, yeah it is.’ You agreed with your friend. ‘Well spit it out.’ She encouraged you. ‘He wants to be in a relationship with me. He said he loved me two weeks ago.’ You told her, watching as her eyes widened. ‘And?’ She quizzed. ‘And I don’t want to put you out of place, you don’t like him.’ You quickly said, she let out a laugh and shook her head. ‘I do like him, I just don’t want to add to his ego.’ She admitted, your shoulders slumped. ‘But that isn’t it.’ She said, encouraging you to continue. ‘What happens if he doesn’t like me as much as he says? What if he just want a major in bed with him then he can brag about it.’ ‘What if six months down the line he realises that he doesn’t like me at all, only wanted to sleep with me because of the hype of my name or what if I’m called out on a mission, only I can do and I don’t return.’ You bent over, ‘I can’t let him mourn me, I can’t let him love me if that’s still an option.’ You finsihed, she tilted her head to the side. ‘I mean, I love you, you know I do but my heart wants to fill itself with his love.’ You explained, your hand subconsciously came up and rested against your chest. ‘God I sound cheesy.’ You commented, you both laughed as she nodded. ‘Maybe you should tell Hangman that, tell him the truth.’ Natasha encouraged you, you puffed your cheeks out and slowly exhaled. ‘As much as I hate to say he’s been smitten with you since you walked into the bar, there might also be a bet going that I could win.’ She told you honestly, you scoffed at the teams antics. ‘I hope if you win I get half.’ You joked. ‘Of course.’
- ‘Seresin.’ You called out, he lifted his head and looked at you. Surprised to see you still at the base. ‘Are you able to talk?’ You quizzed, he looked around and nodded. ‘For you any time.’ He commented, you gave small smile. You turned walked away, he was quick to fall into step beside you as guided the busy bar with ease, then pushed the door open and were meet with the slightly colder air, now that the sun had disappeared. ‘What’s up buttercup?’ He said, you couldn’t stop the corner of your lips curling up. ‘I’ve been offered a job.’ You informed him, his shoulders slumped. ‘Oh great, when do you leave?’ He asked, forcing a smile on, his green eyes focussed on you. ‘I don’t.’ You stated, his eyebrows shot up. ‘What?’ He quizzed. ‘I’ve been offered a position here, I’d be training recruits and helping them. Essentially what Mav did for you.’ You explained, he cautiously took a step closer to you. ‘Are you taking it?’ Hangman quizzed, you let your gaze move up and down him as you took in the beige uniform that he wore well. ‘I think so.’ You said. ‘You think so?’ He quizzed, you nodded. ‘I need to talk to you about your statement.’ You said, the cocky and arrogant Hangman was gone as his head dipped low. ‘I didn’t mean to put you out of place.’ He quickly said. ‘You didn’t, I mean, I don’t normally have men wanting to be my partner.’ You informed him, his brows almost furrowed together. ‘Your joking right?’ He quizzed, you shook your head. ‘Seresin, how many men do you see with woman who are in a higher position than them?’ You asked him. ‘I don’t care, baby you could commanded me to do anything.’ He replied, you pulled a disgusted face as his cheeks tinted red. ‘I need you to understand that, if we do this I don’t want to be a small fling, I want to spend my life with you.’ You said, taking his large hand in yours, ‘you also need to understand that if another mission comes up, in six months or in six years I will more than likely take it.’ You added, he nodded. ‘I’m not letting someone else become Red Death.’ You stated. ‘I understand.’ He replied. ‘Do you?’ You asked, ‘Yes, in understand that I’m in love with a badass, who’s the best pilot I’ve ever meet.’ He said, you smiled widely as he lifted your joined hands and kissed the back of your hand. ‘Jake?’ You asked, he froze and looked at you intently. ‘Say that again.’ He said. ‘What? Your name?’ You quizzed, he nodded. ‘You never say it, it’s always been Hangman or Seresin.’ He pointed out, you arched an eyebrow. ‘Alright, just don’t pop a tent on me.’ You warned him, holding both your hands up only to earn a glare from him. ‘I’m not some first year student.’ He commented, you let out a laugh before you gasped, your ribs were still a little sensitive. ‘Don’t make me laugh.’ You groaned. ‘Sorry.’ He apologised. ‘Jake.’ You said, his gaze landed on you and you wanted to curl away from it but you stood against it. ‘Yes, Y/N?’ He asked. ‘I think you should kiss me.’ You told him, you watched the cockiness appear again. ‘Yes ma’am.’ He mumbled before he leaned forward, his lips were soft compared to the strong grip as he cupped your cheeks. ‘Finally.’ You heard Natasha. ‘Pay up bitches.’ She added, before groans from the rest of the team followed as Jake pulled away from you. ‘What’s that about?’ Jake quizzed, you smiled as he turned back and rested his forehead against yours. ‘They had a bet on us.’ You informed him. ‘Do you know who won?’ Jake asked, you shrugged your shoulders. ‘I believe it was Phoenix, but if Phoenix gives me money it was definitely her.’ You said. ‘You’re getting money?’ He quizzed, you smiled widely and nodded. ‘Probably, I mean it will get me food for the week.’ You said, ‘Unless you want me to use it to take you on a date?’ You suggested, his gaze narrowed. ‘A date?’ He repeated, you nodded. ‘Yeah, you know the thing where two consenting adults go out together and might get lucky at the end of it.’ You informed him, he gave you a wicked smile. ‘Oft, I’ll need to pick out my dress and get my make up and nails done.’ He commented, you let out a laugh that was mixed with a snort, your hand came up to cover your mouth. ‘I think pink would suit you.’ You commented, he pulled away from you as he laughed. ‘Tell me the time and place and I’ll pick you up.’ He said, his face dropped into serious mode. ‘I’m meant to be paying for it.’ You stated. ‘You can buy breakfast in the morning.’ He replied, you arched an eyebrow. ‘Oh, you think you’re getting lucky?’ You quizzed, resting your free hand on your hip. ‘I thought you did, ain’t wasting any more time.’ He said, you smiled before you took his hand. ‘I’m free tonight.’ ‘We’ll look at that buttercup, so am I.’ He said.

Brother's Best Friend - Part 11
Jake Seresin x F!Reader
A/N: Fair warning: I didn't have much time this week so this was a bit rushed and definitely not my best piece of work, but I really wanted to do at least *something* for the holidays!
Summary: The trials and tribulations of falling for your brother's best friend.
CW: New Years Eve party, banter, fluff fluff fluff
WC: ~2300
Part 1 | Masterlist
Tumblr media
“So,” Bradley starts slowly, drawing out a suspenseful silence with a smirk as he butters his toast. “I met study group guy.”
You look up from your plate in alarm, your fork halfway to your mouth, and awkwardly meet your brother’s gaze.
Jake, who’s just set his food down to your left, picks his coffee back up, ready to make a quick exit.
“Uh, where?” you ask, trying to sound casual, but you’re so nervous that your voice wavers.
“Here,” Bradley replies with a grin as he makes his way to the table. “He came by to see how your exam went.”
“Oh?” You gulp anxiously.
“How considerate of him,” Jake notes moodily, setting his coffee back down and giving you a look.
“I agree.” Bradley sits down. “I think he wanted to compare study strategies,” he continues, then clears his throat. “Since the two of you didn’t end up studying together.”
Jake’s eyes go wide as he lets out a feigned gasp. “You didn’t?”
You give Jake an annoyed look and then glance back at your brother who is watching you with a pair of raised eyebrows. “Yeah,” you nod, “about that. Umm, the thing is…”
“You lied?” Jake brings a hand to his chest as though this revelation continues to shock him.
You glare at him irritably. “Partly.”
“Which part?” Bradley enquires, biting into his toast.
You sigh. “The part about study group guy.”
Bradley grimaces. “Why?”
“Yeah,” Jake chimes in, finally taking a seat. “Why?”
“Because I obviously made the wrong decision studying at home,” you retort, eyeing Jake bitterly. “And I just needed somebody to blame.”
Jake watches you cautiously, likely wondering if you indeed think you’ve made a mistake. Good.
“So, you bombed your midterm, big deal.” Bradley waves a hand. “We wouldn’t judge you. Guess that means he won’t be attending tonight’s party.”
You purse your lips. “Nope,” you confirm. “I’ll be all alone.”
Jake tries to catch your gaze as you rise from the table. “We’ll be here.”
“Aren’t you gonna bring your girl?” Bradley asks.
“Nah.” Jake waves a hand.
“Why not?”
Jake eyes you pointedly. “Not really sure where we stand, to be honest.”
You gasp theatrically. “Oh dear! Trouble in paradise?”
Jake throws you a flat look and grumbles, “Well, she’s sort of hard to read at times.”
“Because you’re illiterate?” you retort.
Bradley snorts while Jake scoffs in offence. “Dump her!” Bradley cries as you bring your dishes to the sink. “Life’s too short for mysteries.”
Jake sighs. “She does love to keep me guessing.”
Bradley shakes his head in disapproval after taking his last bite. “She’s playing games with you, man. It’s not worth it.” He gets up and follows you to the sink. “How ‘bout you? You need a date for tonight?”
“Huh?” you say in surprise, having been under the impression that your turn under the microscope was over.
“Remember that dude you met at the Hard Deck last summer? The one you said was ‘so hot’” – Bradley visibly shudders – “I just found out that he’s into you.”
“What dude?” Jake asks abruptly, his posture instantly going rigid.
“The one from 22,” Bradley clarifies. “The backseater. Forgot his name.”
“The douche from Michigan?” Jake makes a face and quickly rises from the table. “You think he’s hot?” he asks you incredulously.
Before you have a chance to respond, Bradley continues. “Apparently he ran into you last week at the café?”
You blink between Bradley and Jake as the latter approaches. While it’s true that you saw one of Bradley’s colleagues the previous week, you’ve since forgotten all about that encounter, because the very next day was when Jake had finally made his move. You start to back out of the kitchen but both Bradley and Jake follow you out. “I have some errands to run,” you say quickly.
“Nothing’s open,” Jake reminds you.
“Do you want me to invite him tonight or not?” Bradley asks, already scrolling through his contacts.
Jake elbows Bradley aggressively. “You’re seriously trying to get your sister laid?”
Bradley cringes. “Dude! Don’t go there!”
Jake stares at Bradley. “What do you think is gonna happen?”
You scoff at Jake incredulously. “Excuse me?”
Jake turns to look at you and places his hands on his hips with an impatient exhale. “I didn’t mean it like that.”
“I just don’t want her to be alone on New Years!” Bradley exclaims, still looking down at his phone.
“She’s not gonna be!” Jake cries desperately.
“I don’t want the date, Bradley,” you say, putting on your shoes despite having absolutely nowhere to go.
“Why not?” Bradley enquires.
“I just don’t. I’m fine with being alone.”
“You won’t be alone,” Jake repeats, the frustration in his voice noticeably mounting.
“I thought you liked him,” Bradley says, slightly deflated. Clearly, he assumed that he was doing you a favor.
“I don’t even know him,” you say. “I just thought he was good-looking, that’s all.”
Jake makes a face. “He’s not.”
You roll your eyes. “Appearance is subjective.”
Jake stubbornly shakes his head but makes no further comment.
“Okay, so why not give him a chance?” Bradley presses. “It’s not like you’re seeing someone. Right?”
You give Jake a quick glance before conducting a thorough examination of your own shoes. “Well, kind of.”
“Kind of?” Jake asks, slightly panicked.
You continue studying your feet. “I think.”
“Who is he? What’s he like?” Bradley asks.
“Uh,” you stall, “he’s alright.”
Jake lets out a muffled cry. “Alright?” he asks and you try not to wince at his utterly obvious outrage.
Meanwhile, Bradley raises an eyebrow. “Wow,” he says wryly. “Sounds promising.”
“What else?” Jake says quickly.
You look up at him in disbelief. “Occasionally aggravating.”
Bradley appears puzzled. “Why are you with this guy?”
Jake squares his shoulders. “He must be extremely handsome.”
Bradley looks back at you. “Is he?”
You roll your eyes. “He’s cute.”
“Cute?!” Jake exclaims.
Bradley laughs. “I really think you should give my guy a try.”
Jake crosses his arms over his chest and stands up taller. “I’m sure there’s more to this guy than just… his looks.” He’s blatantly searching your face now, as if Bradley isn’t even present.
You start to nervously fix your hair in the mirror at the front door. “I’m not interested in your guy, Bradley.”
“Why not?”
“Because…” You sigh resignedly while Jake watches your reflection. “I… I like my guy.”
Jake stares at your face in the mirror as if this is news to him. Then, his mouth slips momentarily into a smile before he sucks in his cheeks to hide it.
Bradley grimaces. “Why?”
“Because, he’s…” another reluctant sigh, “…he’s a good guy.”
“That’s kind of vague,” Jake comments, still trying to suppress a grin.
You shoot him a glare while Bradley chuckles. Then, he says, “Alright, fine. Maybe in a couple of weeks when you’re single again.”
Jake looks at Bradley sharply. “Why would she be single again?”
“Come on, when was the last time my sister liked a guy enough to stay with him long-term? She finds something wrong with everyone she dates.”
Jake shifts his weight uncomfortably. “Maybe this one will stick.”
“Doubt it.” Bradley shrugs.
“This one’s different, Bradley,” you say quietly, turning to face them again.
Jake looks back at you. “He is?”
“How so?” Bradley asks.
You pause, hesitant to reveal the truth. “He… makes me feel…”
Bradley watches you dubiously. “Pretty?”
Jake also takes a stab: “Aroused?”
You let out a weary sigh and lock eyes with Jake. “Safe.”
He stares at you with a stunned expression while Bradley nods approvingly.
“Happy,” you continue.
This time, Jake doesn’t hide his smile, but Bradley raises his eyebrows as though your response has surprised him.
“Strong,” you say.
“Wow,” Bradley mutters.
Jake lowers his gaze with a grin, but you decide to add, “And aroused, I mean –”
“Oh god!” Bradley exclaims.
Jake chuckles, glancing up at you again.
Bradley shakes his head. “I get it, you’re in love. But, Seresin – I just remembered: I’ve got the perfect girl for you!” He holds up his phone, beaming.
Bradley decides to invite the perfect girl just in case because he can see how much his dear friend has suffered at the hands of his mysterious lover. And the perfect girl just happens to be Jake Seresin’s exact type. You try to ignore her flirtatious behavior while Bradley all but pushes Jake in her direction. Your brother seems so keen to set Jake up, you start to wonder what his vested interest might be.
There are enough people in attendance that you can watch Jake without worrying about anyone noticing that you’re staring. So, you pour yourself a fourth martini and head back into the living room to see what your brother’s best friend is up to. You barely make it past the couch, however, when someone you’ve only met once in your life takes your hand and starts encouraging you to spin under his arm.
You glance over at Jake, whose date is also trying to get him to dance. Taking a sizeable gulp of your drink, you follow through with the spin and smile uncomfortably at your new dance partner. The room is bustling because the ball is about to drop and everyone has gathered for the countdown, so you’re forced to crane your neck every so often in order to check on Jake.
He notices your new friend right away, locking eyes with you despite his own supposed date trying to monopolize his attention. You wish you could steal a moment with him when the new year arrives, but Bradley would notice his friend’s absence in a heartbeat considering he’s been tailing Jake all night, making sure that he was having a good time.
When the champagne flutes start making their rounds and the crowd erupts in an enthusiastic countdown, however, Jake separates from his friends and starts making his way through the bodies toward you. He nods his head in the direction of the hall before he’s even come near you, inviting you to join him. But you glance back at Bradley and see that he is already searching for Jake in the crowd that’s suddenly doubled in size as everyone has made their way into the living room.
You shake your head at Jake regrettably. The last thing you need is for the year to start with Bradley walking in on the two of you making out.
Jake gestures more vigorously with his head, urging you to follow and, when you refuse, he moves closer and reaches out to grab your hand. You don’t resist when he pulls you in and, before you can check to see if Bradley has finally given up his search, the clock strikes midnight, and Jake takes your face in his hands and kisses you right there in the middle of the living room amidst the explosion of cheers that welcome the new year.
You hope there is enough commotion in your vicinity to obscure the way Jake’s hands slide sensually down to your neck and then take your shoulders as he steers you through the crowd out of the room, his lips avidly devouring yours the entire time. Somehow, the two of you make it out without even looking up and, once you’re more or less alone, Jake mutters, “Your brother is getting real fucking annoying.”
You chuckle as he plants kisses along your jawline. The two of you are still moving through the house, into the darkness of the entry hall. “He’s been extra involved today,” you agree.
“He’s been fucking annoying,” Jake repeats, sucking on the side of your neck as you come to a halt in the foyer and he wraps his arms around you.
“He’s your best friend,” you remind him.
Jake presses you gently against the front door and licks your earlobe, whispering, “Who the fuck were you dancing with?” You giggle and feel his lips spread into a smile against your skin. “Oh, you think that’s funny?” he asks, and you feel his tongue on your ear again. “You think it’s funny that I had to actively restrain myself from socking him?”
“What about you?” you say, still laughing. “You were with that girl all night!”
Jake whimpers into your neck and his hold on you tightens. “All I wanted was this.” You close your eyes when his mouth finds yours once more. “My new year’s resolution is that I’m never gonna stop kissing you,” he mutters between pecks to your lips.
You giggle again and then sigh, slightly pushing him away. “What are we going to do?”
“I just told you what I’m going to do,” he says, going in for another kiss.
You turn your head and he ends up kissing your cheek. “This is how we’re going to spend the new year? Sneaking around? Hiding in dark corners?”
Jake exhales slowly, resting his forehead on your temple. “I’m going to tell him,” he assures you.
“What are you going to tell him?” you ask, hoping that this question might lead Jake to reveal the nature of your relationship as he sees it.
He leans away from you and looks you in the eye. “That I make you feel aroused, of course.” Your jaw drops in outrage and you let out a yelp that quickly turns into a cackle. Jake is grinning widely, pleased with the effectiveness of his joke. Then, he draws you closer and his face changes shape. He squares his jaw and you see the evidence of a nervous gulp in the bob of his Adam’s apple. “I’m gonna tell him that you’re the girl I told him about,” he says, his tone low but steady. You gaze at him in silence, afraid to move a muscle lest he reconsider the sudden sincerity of his words. “The one I can’t stop talking about.” He swallows again. “The one I’ve been obsessing over.” He pauses to study your reaction as though he’s afraid he might be scaring you off. “The one that I – uh” – he takes a deep breath and then lets out a chuckle, shaking his head. He takes your hands in his and weaves his fingers through yours, tugging you forward until his lips connect with the tip of your nose. “Oh god, Baby B,” he says, leaning into you affectionately. “I should probably stop talking now.”
*That's all folks! Happy New Year!*
