one thing that kind of makes me sad seeing all of the (extremely deserved) love that hayden christensen is getting since the kenobi show press tour, and ahmed best getting that (wonderful, extremely deserved) jedi role in the mandalorian, is the conspicuous absence of jake lloyd, who has not returned to the public eye in a similar way. mr lloyd also did not deserve the harassment that he got back when the movie came out, he was a literal child who did an amazing job with his role. the bullying and negativity must have been so difficult for him to manage growing up. as a bipolar person myself, i have so much empathy for the difficulty in managing schizophrenia. i just hope that somehow, somewhere he knows that prequels fans have so much love for him and appreciation for his work too

There's never a good reason to bully a child actor, but damn, poor Jake Lloyd wasn't even bad at all. He got given some goofy lines and the business with the droid control ship got a little silly but his actual acting? He really conveyed that mixture of vulnerability and boldness. He is brave, he takes all kinds of risks and initiatives, but there's a sense fear and resentment and tautness that underlies it all that really comes through to me.

just read the interview with jake lloyd's mother, lisa lloyd, about his experiences with schizophrenia since being in the phantom menace. i'm glad to hear that he's finally getting help and is reportedly improving, but i can't help but feel absolutely furious about the fact that he was jailed for TEN MONTHS for traffic violations and resisting arrest while in a psychotic episode. the cops wouldn't give him his meds, and denied him hospitalization because "the beds were full". ten fucking months of that. my god.

I know I'm coming back to this, but for me one of the main reasons why the version of Anakin imagined by George Lucas and played by Jake Lloyd and Hayden Christensen was criticized so much at the time is toxic masculinity.
Darth Vader is an impressive man-machine, quite tall (over 2m), with a deep voice (almost robotic). People imagined for two decades what his past could be like and he couldn't be represented by a sensitive young man, traumatized by the death of his mother, very much in love, and played by an actor with a delicate look and voice.
Look at the title of the Razzies which were attributed to Hayden's performance :
- For "Star Wars/Episode II: Yada-Yada-Yoda".
- No Sith, He's Supposed to Be Darth Vader?!?!.
I interpret the first as:
- "how boring he is to complain all the time",
and the second as:
- "can we stop to pretend that this delicate man is the badass Darth Vader?"
And what's a more telling evidence than Lucas Film's decision to give Anakin a much deeper voice for #TheCloneWars ? More, in this version, Anakin is more confident, less neurotic, more manly. Mind you, I'm not saying Matt Lanter didn't do a terrific job as Anakin Skywalker, I'm saying what I think Lucas Film submitted to at the time.
They thought it could "fix" Anakin Skywalker, while I'm thinking they took away some of what made the character so endearing and interesting.
