Jakob Kudsk Steensen Jakob Kudsk Steensen creëert poëtische interpretaties over vergeten of verdwenen natuurverschijnselen. Rieke Vos: “Teylers Museum is uniek.

Weekly Video Review #7
RE-ANIMATED: ARRIVAL by Jakob Kudsk Steensen :
Video starts from up high in the sky showing ocean and slowly comes down and zooms into island. when it comes to the ground level the voice narrates about situation and changes of the island from perspective of island. Using Cgi to narrate the story of an island and, what it seems like an extincted bird. It gave me a new perspective of using 3d technology to express the story in video format.
WE ARE OPPOSITE LIKE THAT, PART 2 by Himali Singh Soin :
Glacier shows up at the beginning and from seeing surroundings it seems like it is Antarctica with dirts under Ices. Person with mysterious outfit comes out of glacier and travels around different places where human seemed to have occupied before. When the person comes back to ice it disappears in to the ice. In the video, showing the surroundings of a glacier and transitioning to being from the ice seeing the traces of human shows big contrast between situations of us humans and nature where ice belongs. thus the title "We Are Opposite Like That".
Artist : Aki Sasamotoin Art 21 :
Artist comes to bar and stares in to the bar table. Then artist starts conversation with bartender and talks about the control, and how state of perfect control is what enables us to embrace the uncontrollable aspect of pure chaos. From that sentence artist said, i felt confirmed by someone by having similar thoughts about control, or at least concept of trying to control. Personally when creating videogames when you put full control of details of your work and shape it how i exactly want it, the game itself tells me what it wants to be and finishes itself. This video personally feels like confirming my way of creating games and arts and guiding me through my future creative work.

Weekly Video Review #7
1.  RE-ANIMATED: ARRIVAL by Jakob Kudsk Steensen
https://vimeo.com/291992820
I saw the island and the interior of the island made with 3D modeling. The voice continues to tell you the correct height. For example, the distance between the island and the sky above where I am located, or the distance from the ground to the top of a tree. The image was very monotonous because of the neat but not bright island atmosphere and accurate figures. And not long after humans arrived on this island, the birds suddenly disappeared. Perhaps the author wanted to inform about endangered animals?
2.  WE ARE OPPOSITE LIKE THAT, PART 2 by Himali Singh Soin
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnqAam25kVI
In this video, I saw a glacier, its broken appearance, ice crystals, and an alien in tinfoil. She seemed to represent the feelings of Glacier. There are ice and glaciers in the North and South Poles and they are melting at a rapid rate. What are people obsessed with? What do nature and man each pursue? I asked myself many questions. I think it is a work that can give deep meaning to the public by combining social issues with artistry.
3.  Artist : Aki Sasamotoin Art 21
https://art21.org/watch/new-york-close-up/aki-sasamoto-an-artist-walks-into-a-bar/
If a human falls from an object, how will the object behave? I watched the glass spin alone on the table. At that time, the artist says that he finds an object that has found his own rhythm and space. I felt as though the object was given personality. And I focused more on the thing keeping spinning, rubbing against the air and making noises. What really surprised me was that the artist asked, 'Why do objects rotate in a circle when they turn in place?' This work gave me another artistic perspective. I would recommend this to anyone.

Week 5 Computational Art and Postphenomenology
Phenomenology is the “philosophical study of the structures of experience and consciousness.” I had first encountered this term with the writing of Maurice Merleau-Ponty and his seminal work the Phenomenology of Perception. I found his account of the body (simultaneously existing as both subject and object) to be fascinating and worth revisiting when analysing ourselves in relation to the world.
So, this week we looked at postphenomenology which is defined as a “revised form of phenomenology that aims to overcome the limitations of subjectivism.” Within the context of Computational Art Theory, this tool can investigate technology in terms of the relations between human beings and technological artefacts by focusing on the various ways in which technologies help to shape relations between human beings and the world. Like Heidegger’s less romantic view of technology, postphenomenology combines philosophical analysis with empirical investigation which is a useful framework within the field of computing.
Our key philosopher within this area is Don Idhe who came up with four mediating roles within human/world/ technology relations that he believes deserve philosophical attention.
1. Embodiment relations: (human - technology) —> world. 2. Hermeneutic relations: human —> (technology - world). 3. Alterity relations: human —> technology (world). 4. Background relations: human (technology / world).
So far, I have personally found Embodiment and Hermeneutic relations to be most relevant to my creative practice. Virtual reality is interesting to look at through the lens of postphenomenology as embodiment is useful for investigating the human body in relation to technological artefacts. But also, how technology can alienate us by shaping our relations to the world itself. Helen shared a great example of these indirect relationships with Aquaphobia by Jakob Steensen which seeks to reconfigure our relations to technology and nature through embodiment in the VR experience.
Another great example of Hermeneutic relations she shared was Pierre Huyghe’s installation at the Serpentine gallery earlier this year entitled UUmwelt. This piece analyses brain activity from a fMRI scanner against a deep neural network of images presented with a community of flies and sanded walls as a commentary on the flexibly of human, animal and machine relationships.
Ultimately this has been a fascinating week which has gifted me with many ideas for the research report. Admittedly I have neglected the virtual reality aspect of the project but now feel more inclined to consider the human within this technoscientific loop as ultimately there needs to be someone to experience it.
