X-Raid confirma alineación de cuatro autos para el Dakar 2023: Przygonski y Halpern con el Plus T1+, Krotov y Al-Qassimi con el Buggy
El equipo X-Raid buscará prenderse en el Dakar 2023 con un nuevo auto que pretende que vuelvan a pelear los primeros puestos, luego de que el último par de años privilegiaran en alineación al Q Motorsport con el proyecto de Audi. Esta temporada X-Raid llega al Dakar con un nuevo auto cumpliendo la normativa T1+ con una alineación de duplas veloces en Kuba Przygonski y Armand Monleón y el argentino Sebastián Halpern con Ronnie Graue llevando el debut del MINI JCW Rally Plus. Además, el fiable y querido MINI JCW Buggy volverá una nueva edición tratando de meterse entre los primeros pero sin la reglamentación T1+: Khalid Al-Qassimi y Ola Floene pilotarán la primera unidad con Denis Krotov y Konstantin Zhiltsov en la segunda.
X-Raid cumple 20 años en el Rally Cross Country y buscará sumar otro gran resultado a su potente historia donde han ganado seis ediciones del Dakar en 2012, 2013 (Peterhansel), 2014 (Roma), 2015 (Al-Attiyah), 2020 (Sainz) y 2021 (Peterhansel).
Kuba Przygonski es la principal carta del X-Raid de cara a este Dakar y el polaco llega con nuevo navegante en Armand Monleón que viene de ser el copiloto de Lucio Álvarez en el Dakar 2022 y el Mundial de Cross Country donde ganaron el Rally de Kasajistán. Antes, Monleón fue navegante de Gerard Farrés en los SSV. Przygonski, ex-motard que llegó a ser P6 en motos en 2014, viene compitiendo en los autos desde 2016 y acumula ya 5 Top 10 en 7 participaciones con mejor resultado de cuarto en 2019 y 2021. En 2022 pilotando un MINI JCW Buggy del X-Raid fue sexto, un resultado bastante notable considerando que el Buggy estaba en desventaja mecánica con los T1+.
El mendocino Sebastián Halpern buscará mejorar el octavo puesto del Dakar 2022, donde también corrió con el Buggy en desigualdad mecánica. Después de iniciar su carrera en los Quads donde llegó a ser segundo en 2011, Halpern se pasó a los autos donde consiguió la novena posición con un programa privado en 2018. Desde entonces estuvo fuera de la competencia hasta regresar junto al probado navegante Ronnie Graue en 2022, también entrenando en el Mundial de Cross Country.
El Dakar 2023 comienza dentro de 11 días, el 31 de diciembre en Arabia Saudita.

Sainz & Cruz Victorious at 2020 Dakar Rally
Carlos Sainz (ESP) and his co-driver Lucas Cruz (ESP) have won the Rally Dakar for the third time, having previously triumphed in 2010 and 2018. In doing so, they presented MINI with its fifth overall victory at the iconic endurance rally.
For MINI and MINI Motorsport partner X-raid, this was the first success since their winning run together, which lasted from 2012 to 2015. The Spanish pair, in the MINI John Cooper Works Buggy, finished 6:21 minutes ahead of last year’s winner Nasser Al-Attiyah (QAT) after roughly 7,500 kilometers through Saudi Arabia, which was hosting the Dakar for the first time.
Dakar record winner Stéphane Peterhansel (FRA) and his co-driver Paulo Fiuza (POR) finished third, 9:58 minutes behind Sainz and Cruz, to round off an impressive performance from the two MINI JCW Buggies. The two MINI JCW Buggy crews each won four stages, while MINI vehicles went fastest on a total of nine of the twelve days. Vaidotas Zala (LTU) / Saulius Jurgelenas (LTU), in a MINI JCW Rally, won the very first Dakar stage on Arabian soil on the opening day.
Seven of the nine MINI crews that started the rally reached the finish in Al-Quiddia (KSA), four of them in the top ten. Orlando Terranova (ARG) and Bernardo ‘Ronnie’ Graue (ARG) finished in the top three on three days on their way to sixth place overall in the four-wheel drive MINI JCW Rally. Local favourite Yasir Seaidan (KSA) and his co-driver Alexey Kuzmich (RUS) were ninth and finished an excellent second on the closing stage. Jakub ‘Kuba’ Przygonski (POL) and co-driver Timo Gottschalk (GER) had their hopes of a top result dashed on the opening day when a technical issue resulted in them losing six hours. They eventually finished in 19th place, 8:35.18 seconds off the lead.
MINI vehicles topped the overall standings after every one of the twelve legs at the 40th staging of the Dakar Rally. Zala and Jurgelenas got the ball rolling with victory on the opening stage, after which Terranova and Graue took the overall lead on day two. Sainz and Cruz claimed their first stage win on the third leg. That victory took them to the top of the overall standings – a position they held right through to the finish.

Jakub “Kuba” Przygonski (POL) and Timo Gottschalk (GER) have won the Dubai International Baja, round two of the FIA World Cup for Cross Country Bajas, in a MINI John Cooper Works Buggy. Second place on both stages proved sufficient to earn the X-raid duo overall victory.
Since switching from motorcycle to car, Przygonski had raced only in the four-wheel drive MINI. The first time the Pole climbed into the two-wheel drive MINI JCW Buggy was for the Shakedown at the Dubai International Baja.
His co-driver Gottschalkwas familiar with the car from the 2018 Dakar Rally.

Amazing Spider-Man #792 continues the “Venom Inc.” crossover and it’s just as much fun as the Alpha issue. Ryan Stegman also provides art for this issue and he proves once again why he’s one of the best at Marvel, particularly when it comes to illustrating Spider-Man. The interplay between Flash, now as Anti-Venom, and Peter is an interesting dynamic, especially with how far Flash has come since high school, and it’s well-explored here.

Animosity #11 gets into some of the divisions that have occurred following the Wake, some of the different groupings and reactions to animals other than humans gaining a spoken voice, and illustrates what animals will find acceptable in propagating their own survival. In this case the subjugation of bees, because they can’t be heard, because they’re little.

Astonisher #3 is interesting in that just as it looks like Magnus is finally getting the hang of the superheroics, dedicating himself to something more than just his own self-interest, a huge monkey wrench is thrown in his way. Other than just the red worm infecting those affected by the meteorite, there seems to be another insidiousness in the title. Alex de Campi is doing some great work here, both with plot and character.

Black Panther: Long Live the King #1 is a digital first comic from Nnedi Okorafor and André Lima Araújo and it’s wonderful. Okorafor sets up an interesting mystery amidst what could be a natural disaster, could be something more, as Wakanda’s capital is struck by an earthquake. T’Challa sees a Lovecraftian monstrosity during the quake, but he seems to be the only one, leading others to question his leadership. Aided by Chris O’Halloran’s colours, Araújo’s artwork is just the icing on top.

Bloodshot Salvation #4 is a flashback issue spotlighting the trouble childhood of Project Omen’s director, the Scarred Man, and his brother, the man who will become Rampage. This issue is wholly illustrated by Mico Suayan, with Diego Rodriguez, and it’s as beautiful as the story itself is troubling.

Brilliant Trash #2 takes us a bit deeper into the world of genetically modified superbeings, mixed a bit with social media and political activism, but not too far. We get glimpses of both sides in this battle, introducing us to more of the players, but we’re still left wondering what’s actually going on.

Coyotes #2 delivers on the promise of the first issue, following it up with more compelling storytelling, delving deeper into the mythology of the coyotes, where they’re likely coming from, the Victorias, and Red’s family. Sean Lewis and Caitlin Yarsky have something amazing here, with some strong world-building, fascinating characters, and stunning artwork.

The Damned #6 begins a new old story-arc, reprinting the Prodigal Sons arc from the second mini-series, now with colours by Bill Crabtree. I think it’s still worth it for the colour if you’ve already read the originals.

Giants #1 is a fairly impressive debut from Carlos and Miguel Valderrama. It takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where kaiju rule the surface of the Earth and humans have taken to the underground, forming gangs to survive. Gogi and Zedo are two kids trying to join the Bloodwolves, serving as our entrance point to this world and giving the book a bit of heart.

Grass Kings #10 switches to Maria’s perspective this time as she and Shelly discuss what’s been going on in the investigation into Jen Handel’s death, deciding that it’s time to confront Archie in what he knows. Once again, I’m highly impressed by how Matt Kindt is telling this story, as a mix of Robert Altman and Geoffrey Chaucer, using an ensemble mosaic to propel the narrative.

Harrow County #28 features Emmy versus Kammi for all the marbles, with an ending that you don’t necessarily see coming, which is going to leave you questioning what Cullen Bunn has just done to us.

Judas #1 is one of the most beautiful looking books this month thanks to the stunning artwork by Jakub Rebelka. His art was one of the highlights of Namesake and now he’s elevating this series. I particularly like the black halo following Judas’ death, it’s just a little touch that adds a lot. The story itself by Jeff Loveness is also interesting, giving a kind of bleak, existential crisis from the point of view of Judas Iscariot, trying to figure out his afterlife and how he fit into the story of Jesus’ death.

Jughead: The Hunger #2 nicely expands upon the factions, adding new players and family members to broaden the story, just as Jughead is recognized by a store clerk, drawing down upon himself the police. Frank Tieri’s setting up the pieces for what should be an interesting confrontation between the Coopers and Jughead.

Kid Lobotomy #3 starts getting to the root of Kid’s metamorphosis and Kafka obsession, while unearthing some of the skeletons of Big Daddy and the Suites’ closets. All through Peter Milligan’s nutty story, Tess Fowler’s art brings it to life wonderfully.

Monstro Mechanica #1 is off to a good start. The premise of Leonardo building a robot is interesting, as is his assistant, Isabel, allowing it to learn and grow despite Leonardo’s instructions otherwise, but it’s the political intrigue that’s really going to hook you. Along with the art, Chris Evenhuis has a clean, smooth style that really suits the subject matter.

Port of Earth #2 gets into the implications that the corporations signed the deal with the aliens and sold out the Earth on the basis of sheer greed. It’s not far-fetched, given the current political climate, but there’s also a hint that the port was going to happen anyway, the deal being the only thing that kept humans alive. The bulk of this issue, though, deals with our POV ESA security agents continuing to chase down the rogue alien “visitor”. From it, it appears that there’s a broader scheme hatching.

Rumble #1 is something I’ve been looking forward to since John Arcudi announced that James Harren was leaving the title and David Rubín was taking over. I absolutely loved the team of Arcudi and Harren, and they really made the first volume of Rumble something unique, but Rubín is probably my favourite new-ish artist to begin working in the North American market in recent years. His art and style is just stunning and fresh, making every character and scene he illustrates something interesting. And he does not disappoint in this first issue.
Arcudi’s humour and quirks, the monstrous and odd characters, the setting, all perfectly mesh with Rubín‘s artwork creating something special. There is a recap of sorts for new readers, albeit biased, so you need not have read the first volume. I still recommend reading it though.

Runaways #4 is actually a nice moment of respite for the reunited youngsters, as they get introduced to Molly’s grandmother and actually get to relax and be safe for an afternoon. I suspect that the revelation of what Molly’s grandmother has been up to, what they’ve been hinting at since the first issue, is going to be nefarious, but still...somewhat happy issue. Plus, Kris Anka draws some of the best cats.

Star Wars #40 shows some cracks appearing in the alliance between the Rebels and the remnants of Saw Gerrera’s extremists on Jedha, as Benthic takes a particularly lethal approach to defending what remains of the planet. The artwork this issue, from Salvador Larroca with colours by Guru e-FX, is very impressive.

Overall standings #Dakar2020 motorcycles and cars after stage 8. The motorcycle and quad competitors remained in the bivouac today, following the death of motorcyclist Paulo Gonçalves yesterday.Today’s eighth stage, around the bivouac in Wadi Al Dawasir, shook up the timesheets at the Dakar 2020. Orlando “Orly” Terranova and Bernardo “Ronnie” Graue (both ARG) finished third in the MINI John Cooper Works Rally, behind Mathieu Serradori and Fernando Alonso. Jakub “Kuba” Przygonski (POL) and Timo Gottschalk (GER) ended the stage in sixth place.
The Bahrain JCW X-raid Team crew of Stéphane Peterhansel (FRA) and Paulo Fiuza (POR) cameback ninth in the MINI JCW Buggy. Their team-mates Carlos Sainz and Lucas Cruz were 13th. Although Sainz still holds the overall lead, ahead of Al-Attiyah and Peterhansel, today’s results have seen the gaps between the top three come down.

Mini Running Dakar with AWD Rally and RWD Buggy Models

Mini may have started life as a tiny front-wheel-drive car in 1959, but that doesn’t prevent parent company BMW from altering that basic concept when it comes to racing. And racing is dear to Mini, especially the Dakar rally, which it won four times in a row from 2012 to 2015 and where it placed with three cars within the top 10 in 2017. Next year, Mini will race the John Cooper Works Rally with all-wheel drive—and a new entry, the rear-wheel-drive John Cooper Works Buggy.

Because of regulations that now favor two-wheel-drive racers, Mini decided to complement the well-proven Rally model with the entirely different Buggy. With a carbon-fiber body built atop a steel frame, the design is funky and aggressive, somewhat reminiscent of the 1997 Mini Monte Carlo Rallye Concept. Meanwhile, the Rally model, which sports a body that evokes the current Mini Countryman, features an upgraded chassis with longer spring travel and reduced weight.

Both the Rally and the Buggy racers are powered by the same turbo-diesel 3.0-liter inline-six. It’s rated at 335 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. The Mini X-Raid team will run three Buggy models, driven by Yazeed Al-Rajhi, Mikko Hirvonen, and Bryce Menzies; the four Rally entrants are piloted by Boris Garafulic, Jakub Przygoński, Joan “Nani” Roma, and Orlando Terranova.

Scoring high at this year’s Dakar rally is particularly meaningful as it is the 40th edition—and the 10th after it moved from Africa to South America due to concerns about security in Africa. The legendary rally begins on January 6, 2018, in Lima, Peru, and will continue through Bolivia to its finish on January 20 in Córdoba, Argentina. It is the world’s most famous and probably most dangerous off-road endurance race, having claimed a total of 67 lives since its inception.

Los favoritos en autos reciben sus números para el Dakar 2020
El pasado miércoles se confirmó la ruta del Dakar 2020 en Arabia Saudita y con ello, la lista de inscritos completa al día de hoy en las categorías que faltaban: Autos, SSV y camiones. Esto nos permite conocer las delegaciones de los equipos favoritos a luchar por el Touareg en el tercer capítulo del Dakar, por primera vez en Medio Oriente. Tal vez haya que partir por los que no están y que fueron protagonistas en 2019: No aparecen en la lista ni Sebastien Loeb ni Cyril Despres.
Los números a los que debes poner atención en 2020 son:
300. Nasser Al-Attiyah (Toyota Gazoo Racing): El campeón defensor del Dakar, que tuvo una temporada brillante en 2019, ganando todas las carreras en que participó exceptuando el Rally de Marruecos donde sufrió un sorprendente abandono. Nasser junto a su navegante Mathieu Baumel, son los favoritos para el Dakar 2020 especialmente por el hecho de que las rutas de desierto serán mayoría.
301. Nani Roma (Borgward Rally Team): Segundo en el Dakar 2019, Nani Roma recibe el segundo dorsal en un desafío que lo verá buscando terminar lo más arriba con un nuevo auto, el Borgward BX7 DKR EVO preparado por Wevers Sport.

Va con un nuevo navegante en Alex Haro, que logró podio con Nani Roma en 2019, puede ser candidato si las etapas son de alta dificultad. Giniel siempre se las arregla para llegar en buen ritmo y ha hecho de la consistencia su fuerte. de Villiers cerró la temporada 2019 con un excelente triunfo en el Rally de Marruecos.
305. Carlos Sainz (Barhain JCW X-Raid Team): Carlos Sainz buscará su tercer título dakariano, ahora con el MINI JCW Buggy. Vuelve con Lucas Cruz como navegante.
306. Martin Prokop (MP Sports): Con la bestial Ford F-150, el ex piloto del WRC buscará el éxito en el Dakar. De los pilotos fuera de equipo oficial que hay que destacar.
307. Bernhard ten Brinke (Toyota Gazoo Racing): El tercer piloto de Toyota vuelve buscando revancha después de mala suerte en las últimas ediciones.
308. Khalid Al-Qassimi (PH Sport): Los créditos locales. El piloto de los Emiratos Árabes conoce el terreno mejor que nadie. Va con un Peugeot 3008 DKR.
309. Yazeed Al-Rajhi (Overdrive Toyota): El árabe ha ganado todas las carreras previas en el campeonato local, por los mismos terrenos donde pasará el Dakar. En el desierto de Atacama, Al-Rajhi demostró que estaba a ritmo y ahora en casa, seguro sentirá mayor confianza para atacar por el primer puesto.
310. Fernando Alonso (Toyota Gazoo Racing): El debut más esperado. Junto con Marc Coma tienen poca experiencia, pero han ido mejorando en cada salida. No esperamos una victoria ni mucho menos, pero hay que estar atentos al ritmo que puedan imponer con el mejor auto del Dakar.
311. Orlando Terranova (X-Raid JCW Team): Orly Terranova tuvo una brillante temporada junto al X-Raid, ganando cuatro carreras y el Mundial de Bajas FIA. Si la suerte lo acompaña, puede ser competitivo.

Carlos Sainz (E) se spolujezdcem Lucasem Cruzem (E) navázali letošním vítězstvím v Dakar Rally na dvojici předchozích triumfů v letech 2010 a 2018. Pro MINI letošní vítězství znamená již pátý triumf v tomto ikonickém vytrvalostním závodě. Pro MINI a partnera MINI Motorsport – tým X-raid – to byl první společný úspěch po triumfech v letech 2012 až 2015. Španělská dvojice jedoucí s buginou MINI John Cooper Works Buggy měla v cíli 7500 kilometrů dlouhé soutěže, která se jela poprvé v Saúdské Arábii, náskok 6 minut a 21 minut na loňského vítěze Nassera Al-Attiyaha (QAT).
Rekordman v počtu vítězství na „Dakaru“, Stéphane Peterhansel (F), se svým spolujezdcem Paulem Fiuzou (P) dojeli se ztrátou 9:58 minuty na Sainze s Cruzem na třetím místě, a tím dokázali působivé schopnosti dvojice bugin MINI JCW. Každá ze dvou posádek jedoucích s MINI JCW Buggy vyhrála čtyři etapy, přičemž vozy MINI zajely v celkem devíti etapách z dvanácti nejrychlejší časy. Vůbec první rychlostní zkoušku na Arabském poloostrově vyhrála s vozem MINI JCW Rally posádka Vaidotas Zala (LTU)/Saulius Jurgelenas (LTU).
Sedm z devíti posádek MINI, které startovaly na Dakar Rally, dojelo až do cíle v Al-Quiddia, čtyři z nich dokonce skončily v první desítce. Orlando Terranova (ARG) a Bernardo „Ronnie“ Graue (ARG) dojeli na své cestě k celkovému šestému místu s vozem MINI JCW Rally ve třech etapách mezi prvními třemi. Na devátém místě dojela posádka Yasir Seaidan (KSA) se spolujezdcem Alexeyem Kuzmichem (RUS), kteří byli v poslední etapě na vynikajícím druhém místě. Jakub „Kuba“ Przygonski (PL) a Timo Gottschalk (D) museli na své sny o dobrém umístění zapomenout hned během prvního dne, kdy je potkaly technické potíže, které je stály šest hodin času. Nakonec skončili na 19. místě se ztrátou 8.35:18.
Vozy MINI byly ve vedení 40. dakarské rally po všech dvanácti etapách. Zala a Jurgelenas zajistili vedení MINI již po první etapě, po druhé etapě se z prvního místa těšili Terranova a Graue. Sainz a Cruz zaznamenali své první vítězství v etapě číslo tři, což je vyneslo na první místo průběžné klasifikace, které si pak udrželi až do konce soutěže.

Carlos Sainz: „Jsem moc a moc šťastný. Tolik tvrdé práce, psychického tréninku a testování s týmem přineslo tento vynikající výsledek. Pro nás řidiče je tento závod fantastický, ale musíte intenzivně pracovat již od prvního dne. Možná se to nezdá, ale tuto soutěž jsme jeli doslova naplno od samotného začátku. Právě teď si chci jen užívat náš úspěch.“
Stéphane Peterhansel: „Byl to pro mě tak trochu starý Dakar. Až na poslední chvíli jsme se rozhodli vyměnit spolujezdce a pak jsme s Paulem Fiuzou nastoupili přímo do závodu. Jsem šťastný za tento výsledek. Byli jsme třetí, což je lepší umístění, než jsme na startu očekávali. Chlapci vpředu byli velmi rychlí a nedělali žádné chyby v navigaci. My jsme dělali, co bylo v našich silách.“
Bend Körber – ředitel MINI: „Jménem celé rodiny MINI bych chtěl pogratulovat Carlosi Sainzovi, Lucasu Cruzovi a celému týmu X-raid k vítězství v letošní dakarské rallye. Současně bych chtěl poblahopřát také Stéphanu Peterhanselovi a Paulu Fiuzovi k jejich umístění na stupních vítězů. Bohužel tento úspěch poněkud zastínily tragické nehody Paula Gonçalvese a Edwina Stravera, které nás velmi zasáhly. Naši jezdci a tým X-raid předvedli v Saúdské Arábii, která dakarskou rally hostila vůbec poprvé, vynikající výkony. Tyto výsledky jsou také odměnou za jejich intenzivní práci v rámci příprav. MINI John Cooper Works Buggy ukázalo, že je v náročném a neznámém terénu velmi rychlé a spolehlivé. Celkově páté vítězství MINI v Dakar Rally a první od roku 2015 pro nás všechny znamená velmi mnoho.“

Five MINI John Cooper Works Rally Cars Will Race in 2019 Dakar Rally
The MINI brand is getting involved in rallying quite a lot these days. The British manufacturer has been a regular participant in the Dakar rally for quite some time now but it seems like this year they will go at it full force. Earlier this week I told you about Carlos Sainz joining the team, racing a buggy in the rally whereas today we’re taking a closer look at the teams racing MINI John Cooper Works cars in the 2019 edition.
MINI X-raid will be fielding five rally cars in Dakar next year, including four established crews and one new one under the banner of ORLEN X-raid. This team will be composed of Jakub “Kuba” Przygonski and co-driver Tom Colsoul. Four wins in nine outings helped Przygonski secure the 2018 FIA Cross Country Rally World Cup championship title. “My goal for January is to do better than I did at the 2018 Dakar. I finished 15th in my first Dakar, seventh in 2017, and fifth last year. Tom and I are quick and have found a good rhythm over the course of the season. We have completed a lot of kilometres in recent months and are ready for the fight,” said Kuba about the upcoming challenge.
The 41st edition of the Dakar rally will kick off on January 6 but the five MINI cars which will line-up have already proven themselves in other challenges, before heading out to Peru. The Silk Way Rally 2018 (Russia edition) was one of two notable wins for Yazeed Al-Rajhi and his co-driver Timo Gottschalk. The Spanish pairing of Joan “Nani” Roma and Alex Haro took three wins in 2018 – Baja Portalegre 500, Turkmen Desert Race, Hungarian Baja.
The third MINI JCW Rally team will be the crew of Orlando Terranova and Ronnie Graue. The experience they gained during their win in the desert conditions of the 2018 Desafío Inca will prove useful to them in the Dakar 2019 edition, where the heat and sand will be pivotal to determine the front runners in the early stages. Joining the aforementioned crews will be the experienced duo of Boris Garafulic and co-driver Filipe Palmeiro.

Január 20-án véget ért a 2018-as Dakar Rali, amely negyvenéves fennállása legnehezebb versenykörülményeit tartogatta az indulóknak: a rajthoz guruló 92 versenyautó közül mindössze 43 tudta leküzdeni a 14 etap összesen több mint 9 000 kilométeres versenytávját. Az argentin Córdoba városában a MINI hét csapatából négy érkezett be a célba, ráadásul mindegyik a legjobb húsz között.
„Rendkívül nehéz verseny volt az idei. A korai kiesések és kizárások együttesen megmutatták, hogy mennyire kemény tud lenni a Dakar, Sven Quandt és az X-raid istálló azonban ismét kimagasló eltökéltségről, fantasztikus csapategységről és a MINI rendületlen magabiztosságáról tett tanúbizonyságot. Mindenki, aki célba ért Córdobában, maximális tiszteletet és elismerést érdemel, Carlos Sainz-nak pedig külön gratulálok a győzelemhez. Kuba Przygonski és Tom Colsoul idei legjobb MINI-eredménye és abszolút ötödik helyezése ugyancsak hatalmas gratulációt érdemel, büszkék vagyunk a páros kimagasló teljesítményére! Minden jel arra mutat, hogy képében megtaláltuk a MINI tökéletes fegyverét a jövőre nézve. A MINI John Cooper Works Rally szintén kiválóan teljesített, Joan „Nani” Roma felborulásáig fantasztikus pozícióban autóztunk vele. Biztonsági szempontból azt kell mondanom, hogy kiváló autókat építettünk: felborultunk és megakadtunk párszor, azonban egyik csapattagunk sem sérült meg. Kuba Przygonski az elejétől kezdve hihetetlen tempót autózott, az abszolút ötödik hely rendkívül jó eredmény. Végig az élbolyban maradt, ő és Tom Colsoul hiba nélkül vitték végig a pályát. Így kell ezt csinálni” – tette hozzá Sven Quandt.
A brit prémiumgyártó idei legjobb Dakar-eredményét a 312-es rajtszámú MINI John Cooper Works Rally versenyautóval induló lengyel-belga duó szerezte meg, amely a versenytársakat ért folyamatos balszerencse láttán kellőképpen óvatos üzemmódban, minimális kockázatok mellett teljesítette a tizennégy etap versenytávjait. „Boldogok vagyunk, hogy sikerült célba érnünk. Rendkívül nehéz és megerőltető verseny volt. Egytől egyig kiváló csapatok, hatalmas Dakar-tapasztalattal rendelkező pilóták végeztek előttünk, így kiváltképp büszkék vagyunk az ötödik helyre. Jómagam az egyik legfiatalabb versenyző vagyok az első tízben, így ha még több tapasztalatom lesz, még gyorsabb tudok majd lenni. Tommal mindvégig nagyon jó hangulatban autóztunk, az autó pedig még a tavalyinál is kiválóbb volt. Alacsonyabb az önsúly, jobb a rugózás és még strapabíróbbak a gumik” – mondta Jakub „Kuba” Przygonski.
A második legeredményesebb MINI-duó a Boris Garafulic és Filipe Palmeiro alkotta páros lett, amely az összetett tabella abszolút tizenharmadik helyére hozta be a 317-es rajtszámmal induló MINI John Cooper Works Rally versenyautót. Tizenkilencedik lett a finn Mikko Hirvonen és navigátora, a német Andreas Schulz, akik először teljesítették a teljes versenytávot a MINI John Cooper Works Buggy versenyautóval, és ezzel Dakar-történelmet írtak. „Elképesztő élmény volt, noha nem sikerült hoznunk az elvárásainkat. Egyértelmű, hogy az idei volt minden idők legkeményebb Dakarja, még ha nincs is nagy tapasztalatom e téren. Mindig is ilyennek képzeltem a Dakart, és annak ellenére, hogy rendkívül kemény két héten vagyunk túl, minden percét élveztem. Elszomorító, hogy a csapat megfeszített munkája ellenére nem tudtuk hozni az elvárásainkat, de összességében azért boldogok vagyunk, mert egy nagyon erős, megbízható és hibátlanul működő versenyautót építettünk” – fogalmazott a 305-ös rajtszámmal versenyző raliprofesszor.
Mikko Hirvonen és Andreas Schulz mögött érkezett célba a harmadik MINI John Cooper Works Rally versenyautót vezető Orlando Terranova, akinek honfitársa, az ugyancsak argentin Bernardo Graue volt segítségére. A 307-es rajtszámú versenyautó duója kissé elégedetlen a végeredménnyel, az elkövetkező időszakot így a tapasztalatok részletes kielemzésének szentelik, hogy jövőre még jobb eredményre legyenek képesek. „Nagyon nehéz két héten vagyunk túl. Folyamatosan navigációs problémákkal küzdöttünk, de amikor rátaláltunk a jó irányra, rendkívüli tempót tudtunk autózni. Nem volt egy jó Dakar, a versenyautó azonban fantasztikus: a gázreakció, a futómű és a gumiabroncsok jobbak, mint valaha” – mondta Orlando Terranova.
Bryce Menzies és Peter Mortensen rögtön a második etapon kénytelen volt feladni a versenyt, miután a 310-es rajtszámú MINI John Cooper Works Buggy egy balszerencsés szituációt követően összetört. Joan „Nani” Roma és Alex Haro a harmadik etapon borult óriásit a 302-es rajtszámú MINI John Cooper Works Rally-val, amelyet követően a spanyol pilótát megfigyelésre kórházba szállították. A versenyző sérülések nélkül megúszta a balesetet, a Dakar Ralit azonban nem tudták folytatni. A rajthoz álló harmadik, 314-es rajtszámú MINI John Cooper Works Buggy versenyautót a hetedik etapban zárták ki a versenyből, Yazeed Al-Rajhi és Timo Gottschalk párosával.

El tercer día del Dakar 2018 ha traído una vez más el dramatismo de otra etapa dura y difícil. La Etapa 3 consistía en 208 kilómetros de enlace, pero fueron los 296km a través del desierto de Ica los que conllevaron problemas.
Jakub ‘Kuba’ Przygonski (POL) y Tom Colsoul (BEL) fue el primero de los equipos MINI en cruzar la línea de meta de la Etapa 3. Teniendo en cuenta las problemáticas dunas y la arena del desierto, además de que Colsoul aún se estaba recuperando de las dolencias del día anterior, Przygonski y su copiloto apretaron con precaución para asegurar un buena 9a posición que los deja en la 11a plaza de la general.
Przygonski: “”Hoy ha sido bastante duro, la navegación no fue fácil. En algunos sitios era muy difícil ver las dunas, porque el sol estaba justo encima de ellas, y no era fácil ir cuesta arriba y cuesta abajo. Tenemos que estar muy concentradosporque el terreno cambia de arena a piedras. Hemos sufrido un pinchazo, que cambiamos bastante rápido”.
Boris Garafulic (CHI) y su copiloto Filipe Palmeiro (POR) comenzaron la Etapa 3 con poco ánimo debido al incidente que sufrieron ayer en la Etapa 2, que los hizo regresar muy tarde al vivac nocturno con un retraso de 11 horas respecto al líder de la carrera. Sin embargo, el equipo de MINI John Cooper Works Rally completó hoy la Etapa 3 el 13o, demostrando el alto nivel de resistencia de los equipos de rally cross-country.
Garafulic: “Fue una buena etapa para nosotros. No hemos ningún problema a pesar de la exigencia de ir con el sol de frente”.
Completaba la Etapa 2 en 16a posición el equipo de Orlando Terranova (ARG) y Bernardo Graue (Arg). Pese a tener algunos problemas con la navegación y uN
neumático dañado, otro resultado solvente permite a la pareja conservar una plaza dentro del top ten, situándose en el 8o puesto de la clasificación general.
Yazeed Al Rajhi (KSA), con su copiloto Timo Gottschalk (DEU), también fueron víctimas de un incidente en la Etapa 2 del día anterior y están tratando desesperadamente de recuperar algún tiempo de las siete horas que perdieron atascados en las dunas. Finalizando la Etapa 3 en 30a posición, la pareja recuperó algunas plazas que los sitúa en 49a plaza de la general.
Al Rajhi: “Fue un buen día a pesar de que arrancamos en una posición retrasada, por lo que había mucho polvo y nos lo hemos tomado con calma. Después hemos visto a Mikko atrapado en las dunas, así que nos quedamos para ayudarlo y hemos terminado juntos”.
La mala suerte también visitó al equipo formado por Mikko Hirvonen (FIN) y Andreas Schulz (DEU). Hirvonen había empezado a presionar mucho y iba lanzado hacia otro excelente resultado dentro del top ten. Pero a mitad del tramo especial, Hirvonen impactó contra la arena profunda y se quedó atascado. Como resultado, finalizar la etapa el 39o..
Hirvonen: “Nos deslizamos de lado hacia una duna y nos quedamos atascados en la arena. No podíamos movernos hacia delante, hacia atrás ni hacia los lados, y dedicamos tiempo buscando las ruedas de repuesto debajo del coche. Perdimos mucho tiempo. Es una pena, pero las cosas son así”.
El dúo español formado por Joan ‘Nani’ Roma y el copiloto Alex Haro esperaba quedar entre los cinco primeros en la Etapa 3. Por desgracia, apenas un kilómetro antes de la especial fuera de pista, la peor de las suertes se encargó de hacer volcar su MINI John Cooper Works Rally. A pesar de que la pareja logró terminar la prueba especial, antes de completar la etapa de enlace Roma fue trasladado al hospital para realizarle controles médicos preventivos. Como resultado, el equipo no puede continuar el Dakar 2018.
